I called Tmobile's prepaid support number and they confirmed that they make you pay for a contract plan in order to enable this feature.
So, I was wondering...is this something maybe a custom ROM could fix?

Nope, that's a network feature, the ROM can't do anything about it. There IS an option though, but it only helps if you have people calling your GV number.
Tell TMO you want to REMOVE voicemail from your service. They will be confused and ask a number of times if you REALLY want to do that, but insist. Once the TMO VM is gone, GV will pick up for you.
If you have people calling your TMO number though, I'm not aware of any way to do it.
If you're doing prepaid, it's nice to have people use your GV number. You can swap carriers anytime you like and you never have to tell anyone your new number. Just update your GV config and move on.

I haven't tried this out myself, but try out the app "call interceptor" from the market. Free trial, 99¢ after to keep. I don't know what it does, but somehow integrates g voice with phone. Might have a voice mail forward feature.

That's what works for me on the $30/100min plan.
As for if the ROM can do it.. You could do a few things but they would need to have a connection and use minutes. For example, your phone could do the voicemail itself. It could also do a 3-way call to send the call to Google Voice. But forwarding is done by Tmobile, so if you want reliability for weak connections or your phone is off, you need them to help. It sucks that they make that unavailable for prepaid.

Prepaid accounts don't support the "Conditional Call Forwarding" feature that you need if you want to use Google Voice for Voicemail, and a ROM can't workaround it. I used to use GV on post-paid, but now the "T-Mobile Visual Voicemail" app is good enough for me.
FWIW, there's a petition to get T-Mobile to enable call forwarding. I signed it last summer when I switched from ATT to $30 tmob prepaid. Only 174 signatures atm though :/

Is anyone else having issues with call waiting not working when using google voicemail? I like the features of google voice but this is a deal breaker. I noticed that the call waiting feature is not working at all on my sprint # and every time it is going directly to voicemail, I assume this has to be because of google voice is configured to be my default voicemail?
Is there any solution to this problem besides going back to sprint vvm?

Yea I'm getting all those features as well, like I said everything works great except call waiting. But I'm gonna try nebenezer's suggestion and hope for the best.
You know what else doesn't work with Google Voice is "Decline" because if you decline a call it goes straight to Sprint Voicemail. The call never gets forwarded. Deal breaker for me.

hmm, I didn't realize that.
One thing that does bug me too is that caller-id-blocked numbers don't make it to GVoice either.
My work line shows as 000-000-0000 on caller id. I have tested this on a wide variety of phones and gvoice settings and never have I been able to leave myself a vm from my work line.

Well that sucks, back to Sprint VVM for me then.
Hopefully this is something that Google can even fix and isn't a limitation due to Sprint's network or hardware in some way.

FWIW, I just tested this a couple times with a friend at work, no problems here. Maybe that was another conflict with Sprint's voicemail service?
He called my phone from his, I declined the call, he left a voicemail..
If you want to make sure that voice mails go to google voice, turn on Call Screening. That way if you don't answer, decline or you miss the call, you google voice picks up the message. You may get a voicemail message in your sprint voicemail box, but it will only have the message "press 1 if you want to accept this call"
So with this method you don't have to forward calls at all.
Let me know if this helps anyone.
Has anyone been successfully able to get Google Voicemail to work on the GN for this plan? I configured the settings but the caller does not get the voicemail greeting, just keeps ringing. I have also disabled the carrier voicemail. Any steps to get this to work is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I don't have a Nexus yet, but did you properly register your phone on Voice? Specifically through the settings page? Typically, Voice gives you a number to dial on your phone to "activate" it.
I have this plan, and use google voice exclusively. It will work, if you set up voicemail in the google voice settings from desktop pc. You have to activate voicemail for that phone.
You can't do it through the app, cause it normally does call forwarding (just skip that setting during app setup). but call forwarding is disabled on pre-paid plans. so that is why you disable carrier voicemail. so when someone calls it will ring and ring, till google voice assumes no one is answering and sends the call to voicemail.

Thanks, I have done what you described but it never goes to voicemail, just keeps ringing. Maybe I missed a step. Anything else I can try?

You sure you have google voicemail actived for that number in your google voice settings? If so, it should just work.

Yeah, its activated like your screenshot but I did not enter those code on the phone because it errors out on the phone. What do I need to do on the phone other than signing into the GV account? Thanks

Did you disable the carrier voicemail after GV voicemail was setup or before? Not sure if that matters because I disabled it as the very first thing.

The order shouldn't matter. Has nothing to do with google voice or it's voice mail.
T-Mobile's prepaid plan does not support unconditional call forwarding, which is required to use Google Voice as the voice mail box on a non-Google Voice number.
However, just using a separate Google Voice number and its voice mail box works fine.
I have the same plan ($30 Monthly4G) I love it (no fees and taxes) except for this lack of unconditional call forwarding.

I don't think it is required to use google voices voicemail.
While the google voice app on the phone won't be able to setup voicemail (cause of lack of conditional call forwarding), you can activate it through google voice desktop version. As long as your carrier voicemail is disabled (I called them to disable it, and have them turn off web-guard), then when someone calls your google voice number, it will forward to your phone, but if no one answers the phone, after x seconds your google voice voice mail should pick up the call and your phone should show a missed call, and a google voice notification (for the voicemail).
I'm not sure why the OP is having problems. Lots of people have it setup this way.
edit: did you disable web guard too? (you need to call and verify your age). if not, maybe your problem is related to that.

What the previous poster was explaining is that you need to use google voice all-in to get this feature. Yes it works as you describe with the GV number, but not with the T-mobile number, as I understand it.

That's pretty much the only way to use google voice without making a big confusing mess for the phone owner and their callers. At least IMO. I thought that is what the OP was trying to do.

I really really wish that T-Mobile support unconditional call forwarding for this monthly prepaid plans. As far as I can see the only real difference between the prepaid and the post-paid plans are exactly that: you pay for the next month or for the previous month.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes I am trying to use GV voicemail on the Tmobile number not the GV number. The GV number works fine but my primary number is the Tmobile number so I need voicemail on that number (preferably GV and not the carriers). Thanks
Oh man I had them disable my voicemail so I could use this feature, should have read this first.

Check the other $30 prepaid thread for more info.
Basically if you just want to use GV for Voicemail and not calls, you have to call and tell T-Mobile that you'd like to cancel your T-Mobile Voicemail service. Then you'll be able to set up GV for Voicemail at that point.
The issue is that the way GV normally works for Voicemail is your T-Mo # receives it then forwards to GV #. Most prepaid plans don't offer call forwarding so it won't work.
Of course if you're all-in and ported or using GV as your primary number, then you just use that and GV handles Voicemail normally.
For some reason when I loaded my sim it keeps telling me I have a voice mail even though my account is empty. I tried installing google voice since thats my mail voice mail account and the icon is still there.
Anyone experience this? Anyone find a way to get rid of it?
Is this your first time starting? They send you a voicemail notification so that you'll dial your T-Mobile voicemail and set it up. Until you set it up it won't go away.
Call your number and leave yourself a message. Then delete that voicemail. It should go away.

when i had this issue, i tried this months ago and worked fine.
to make sure you understand.
make sure you DO NOT set up google voice for your voice mail yet.
make sure you still have tmobile voice mail set as default.
call yourself from home phone/ girls phone/ bf's phone ect..
dial tmo's voice mail number. delete voice mail.

I'm having a similar issue as the OP. I just got my sim card swapped out by T-Mobile, and now I have a new voicemail notification that I can't get rid of.
I actually have my voicemail completely disabled, so I have no way of leaving myself a message or anything (I have it setup this way so my carrier's voicemail doesn't pickup any of my voicemails).
Any recommendations on how to get rid of this? It has been driving me crazy.

Enable your voicemail and leave a message, then delete the message. You don't need to have your voicemail disabled for GV to work correctly. As long as you setup GV correctly, it will enable call forwarding so your carrier voicemail does not interfere.

But call forwarding uses my minutes. So each call that goes to voicemail costs me minutes, and I am on the 100 minutes a month plan, so I don't really have a bunch to share.

If you really want to go the prepaid route I would just use your google voice number (in other words don't give out your "real number") and disable the voice mail that comes with whatever prepaid service you use.

That's exactly what I am doing...
My voicemail is completely disabled for my account. The problem is that I swapped out my sim card at TMobile, and now my phone says it has a new voicemail with no way of clearing it, since my voicemail is completely disabled.

I hate to say it but you may have to call support. I initially had the voicemail symbol that I couldn't get rid of until I set up the voicemail. Then I had the voicemail disabled.

I did contact support... Not to be rude, but did you read this thread? I posted a log of my chat with support, and posted that I have my voicemail disabled.
I may end up reactivating my voicemail, setting up voicemail, and then disabling voicemail again. Unfortunately I think I have to talk to support for each of those steps.
I was told that using VM doesn't use minutes. I'm on the 100 minute plan too. Just a thought. That or you could try calling from SIPDroid but I never have gotten it to work with Google Voice.

Calling my voicemail box definitely uses my minutes. I'm not sure if calls forwarded use minutes, but I am pretty sure they do.
I have an HTC One S, but I think it should still be the same. Go to Settings>call> Clear voicemail notification.

Ah. My bad then. I'll give that a shot in a few days. Google is sending me a replacement device for other issues, so I am going to try and see if that fixes it for some reason first.
Update: I was having an issue with a voicemail notification displaying on my phone even though I had voicemail completely disabled on my phone after I got a new sim card. I solved the issue by re-enabling the voicemail for my account (via online chat), and then disabling it again a day later (again via online chat).
I'm just posting this in case someone else has the same issue as me. I didn't even have to leave myself a voicemail and delete it or anything like people above were saying (probably because my voicemail system was initially completely disabled).

I think for now the only "fix" is to start a new SIM account with a throwaway number and port your desired number from T-MO to Google Voice. Don't give out the throwaway number and use GV for everything.
The problem with that is that you use their sms services. No MMS and the phone doesn't control the sms at all.
I have a straight talk sim on the way and I am gonna compare the service, although it doesn't look good with straight talk in NYC.

No, I don't think T-mobile would care.
I believe all prepaid services are currently unable to use GV. They need "Conditional Call Forwarding" which is a feature not included with Prepaid plans. Straight Talk is what I use, and they also do not have conditional call forwarding.

Using GV for everything isn't as scary as people think. I quickly got over the lack of MMS support (email is a better standard for such things anyway). I love the ability to text from my main number in the browser regardless of how far away I am from my phone.

Just FYI the new Solavei service which operates on T-Mobile has call forwarding. I know because mine is working right now. You can visit this thread for discussion about it if you like.

Straight Talk has conditional call forwarding. I'm using it right now.
Yeah straighttalk has it but doesnt work well in NYC. I am however trying it out. If the speeds and coverage is close I might switch. I just dont wanna get cut off and loose my number as is the case with some people.

If nothing else works you can call t mobile customer service and ask them to remove voice mail completely - I made two Boost mobile phones work with Google Voice that way - it works perfectly.
This would obviously work if you want to use GV number for everything - for me it is no problem since I use mostly Google Voice numbers since 2005 or 2006, or from the beginning of GrandCentral.
I've made the switch to just Google voice and I never looked back. I don't even know what my "real" number is. Like someone else said about MMS, emailing pics works just fine for me.

Straight Talk ATT sim has conditional call forwarding... Straight Talk T-Mobile sim does not....
That's the choice... faster data or google voice for voicemail.... I've been on Tmobile $30 plan for over 2 months now.. Data is great, but I have found that 2GB is enough for me a lot thanks to Opera Mini and the voip solutions have not worked well. I really has a disdane for calling / prompt voicemail so I am going to give the ATT service a try here in Portland next month. I'll post some results when I get the ST ATT sim
I am trying to understand the issue here. I have Verizon currently and am using a GV # with no issues. My calls come in great, I use GV as my voice mail, and gv for texting. No one knows my verizon number.
I want to get an unlocked phone, and move to TMobile prepaid plan. My goal is to use my current GV number, and use google voice mail and texting too.
What problems will I encounter?

The only problem you will have is if someone calls your TMobile number when it's time to go to voicemail it will not go to Google voice voicemail. This it not a problem if, like me, no one has your TMobile number anyways. Everything else works the same way that is does on Verizon.
You can have TMobile disable voice mail so if some random person calls your TMobile number you won't ever have to worry about getting the vm from someone you don't know. Ie tele marketers.

The text messages are handled through google voice too?
I ported my number to Google and use GV integration app so I can use stock messaging app. No problem at all except for not being able to send MMS, however I receive every MMS sent to me automatically via Google's MMS to email feature.
P.S. Im on straight talk /T-Mobile

This only works if the MMS is from a Sprint user though.
I have a Data only account on my Galaxy S3 through Sprint MVNO Freedompop.
If I try to make a voice call through the native dialer - I get an error message from Sprint saying that calls to that number are not supported.
Sprint does not recognize me as having a voice account.
Freedompop, my data only MVNO, provides voice calling through their VOIP app, but the VOIP app works poorly when the data connection is slow.
Since I have no voice service on Sprint, is it possible to have a second Sprint MVNO at the same time on the same phone to provide voice only?
In other words, to get only data through my Freedompop account, and voice only through the other MVNO.
At present, my GS3 has a rooted stock kitkat rom.

I don't think you'll be able to do that because that would mean you would have the same device on two different activated account.

Mattzeller, Thank you for responding! It is for the very reason that one MVNO for and data and another for voice would mean having the same device on two different activated accounts that I am asking whether it is somehow possible.
The reason I wonder if it it might be possible is because each account would be for a service that is not activated on the other account - thus no overlap.
So I wondered if there might be a way to "trick" the phone/ sprint into using the appropriate setup to connect with right apns for voice when voice calling, and using a different set for the data connections.
I know it's a very noob question that reflects my lack of understanding about how accounts are registered to the provider.
It's doubtful, because it's not activated by what services it has, but by its unique MEID.
