New(ish) guy here looking for kitkat - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello world, I have a samsung Galaxy Tab 3 SM-T210R 8GB. I have already rooted and installed TWRP custom recovery. The 4.1.2 thats on this tablet feels a bit dated and I was wondering if there is a stable build of kitkat that would work on this tab?
If not, whats the best rom you would recommend? I would like to overclock my chip to around 1.5ghz for a smidge more performance, and want a nexus like experience. I don't really care about touchwhiz, I want this tablet to perform at its best.

Nope not yet. There is work in this and the development forum on a CM build but it isn't ready for daily use. As an alternative and a very good base of 4.1.2 without all the bloat, I use RocketTab from @tempdroid. See the development forum for more details.

cool thanks.
now for another id10t error. I wasnt paying enough attention in twrp recovery and accidentally erased the entire os in a full wipe. I tried loading rockettab rom from the sd card but I guess that isnt the full android because my tablet got stuck at the Samsung splash screen, I even let it sit there for a good half hour to make sure it wasn't still loading. but it stuck at that screen.

Humm... As I recall, there are two files for RocketTab. Full and Light. You have to load Light first and then if you are interested in the apps from the Full file, load it over top. I'm wondering if you went right to Full first which isn't the full OS.
Can you mount the SD and copy the right file over while in TWRP (I'm not familiar with TWRP).
@tempdroid has a support thread in this forum too.

I personally suggest CWM touch recovery from @gr8nole, everything seems to work well there.
If you have a T210R, then the RocketTab3.0.zip should be enough. Doing a full wipe before is a good idea.
Did you verify md5 checksum of the file. Initial booting takes some minutes but you should not get stuck.

I got a really good feeling about this forum already.

I will try that on this next attempt.
on a side note, has anyone tried overclocking this tablet? Im not expecting much but if I could bump the 1.2 ghz up to a more respectable 1.5 GHZ I would hope that might make things feel just a tad more snappier. \
this tablet is leaps and bounds behind my LG G2 in performance and screen quality. I got spoiled on that snapdragon 800 chipset

Not that I know of. Try RocketTab and make up your mind again. It will become much more usable, but please don't compare to the G2, it's not fair

HOLY COW! Just got rocket tab running and this tablet is really noticeably faster! You guys are totally awesome. I respect you for not treating me like **** just for being a new member and giving me the correct answers to help me. I was having buyers remorse with this tablet, but now I think its pretty darned good.

Glad, your Tab got new life :highfive: :good:
Hope to see you around the RocketTab thread again. Check the RocketTab support thread for everyone, until you are allowed to post on the main developer thread.

We got the Tab 3 7" Kids T2105 so that our boy can use the kids mode when we're not using it.
But....as many have enountered, the stock rom is laggy and I'm wondering how it would be possible to flash the Kids Tab to RocketTab for the snappiness and yet retain the Kids Mode?! Seems like this is impossible as once the rom is flashed, the Kids Mode app is gone too...
Any idea how I can increase the performance of the Kids Tab otherwise? I've got it rooted but haven't really done much after that.

Not that I know of off the top of my head. I would think surely theres a custom kids mode rom out there. But keep in mind all that UI on top of android will still slow it down some.

Not sure what's layered on top or the differences in hardware. @gr8nole worked on the reverse... Making a T210R a kids version. Not sure if able to help you or shed light but an expert nonetheless.

new galaxy 3 user, what should i do first?

so i had a s1 vibrant 2 years ago. got ascreen protector, a case, rooted, rommed, kerneled, changed some settings, etc.
i havent been in the scene for a while now, and i am wondering what a new galaxy s3 user should do? same things?
1. does this need a screen protector
2. is a phone case a good idea?
3. WTF IS UP WITH THIS BATTERY? charged, then unplugged, went to bed and overnight 7 hrs dropped to 40%. i literally did nothing. gps was off too. ???
4. is stock any good?
5. what are the top roms right now?
6. is there a top "kernel"
7. any must have apps like the s1 had? like titanium, etc
8. any other comments? thanks!

Hey Man,
Welcome to the GS3! =)
1. Yes you should get a screen protector. I have never dropped my phone and I can already see micro scratches after 6 months. Others have reported the same.
2. I would say a case is a good idea. Because the phone is made of plastic and the bezel does not completely cover the screen, if you drop it and it hits on a corner, there's a good chance of a crack.
3. Google Now. If you have opted in, opt out or your phone won't make it through the day. It is the biggest resource hog out there. My phone easily lasts 14 hours with 3.5 hours screen time. I had 1.5 hours screen time yesterday and was up to 20 hours.
4. It is preferential. If you like the features Touchwiz offers, stock isn't bad. I do recommend you obtain a debloated custom ROM or do it yourself though. The phone runs 100% smoother on a debloated ROM.
5. Again its all preferential. AOSP: CyanogenMod 10.1, AOKP, Task650's rendition of AOKP, Vanilla Root box just to name a few... TW: Graviton, CSROM, Synergy, GalaxyMod, etc..
6. Lots of preferential questions lol, a few popular ones are Task650's Underwear Kernel for AOSP ROMs and KT747 for both Stock and AOSP. Those are the only ones I've tried. Good things happening with both.
7. Titanium Backup is about the only must have. I prefer GooManager just to keep my Recovery up to date. Some people prefer ClockworkMod, however TWRP has seemed to make an uprising in the past short while. GooManager updates your recovery to TWRP (which allows you to do anything CWM would let you do).
8. I would start with rooting your phone. Once rooted download GooManager from the Play Store and press menu to "Install OpenRecoveryScript" This will give you TWRP Custom Recovery. From there find your favorite debloated ROM, make a full nandroid backup from within TWRP and start flashing. This is generally how I begin with new phones, but again its very preferential and 9 times out of 10 someone will have a different method.
Just make sure you read all instructions while rooting and flashing. Then read them again, then follow them. Never flash any ROM that does not specifically say it was designed for your devices model (GS3 has several US variants, Canadian variants and International variants).
Lastly, make sure you backup your EFS folder / NV Data before flashing so that in the event you lose your IMEI you have a backup ready and waiting. =)

I agree with all of this, but I would allso suggest before any of the rooting or flashing To just use and enjoy the phone first find the things you do and dont like about it being on the stock ROM. Once you have Those ideas and you want to flash. start Reading some of the roms available to you and see what is going to make for the best experience for your use.

+1 for battery. This is one of the best phones in terms of battery life. I routinely get 18-24 hours with 5-6 hours screen on time My other S3 that's on rooted stock gives over 4 hours screen on with 2-3 days standby.
Neither of us have any battery saving apps.

list of things you should do first
1. get cases/protection if needed.
2. try stock TouchWiz
3. make decisions (whether you happy or unhappy with samsung touchwiz)
4. if you're happy, dont wanna change, keep it.
5. if you're happy but hate bloatwares, root and uninstall/change
6. if you're unhappy with touchwiz launcher, download new launcher
7. if you're unhappy with stock rom, root and try custom roms.
8. if download custom roms, read first (many newbies flash international rom and hard bricked their phones then came to us crying for help)
9. if you wanna add mods to custom roms/stock roms, make sure you read carefully before installing (mods such as audio...)
10. hate the look? theme it.
11. hate font? change it
12. bored? download games
13. need buddies? download social network apps
14. battery drain? search for solution
15. bored/hate/dissastified of S3? get new phone

1. does this need a screen protector
I don't have one on my phone and am approaching one year of ownership. I have a few very tiny micro scratches on it, but that is because I occasionally put my work keys in the same pocket like I shouldn't, but when the screen is on, you don't see them at all. I usually only see them in sunlight at an angle. I personally hate looking at a beautiful screen though a crappy screen protector.
2. is a phone case a good idea?
I have several cases, all TPU cases and they fit very well. I love how thin my phone is so I find myself taking the case off from time to time. If you are a woman and are going to put it in your purse, get a case. If I go anywhere other than home and work, that is usually when I put my case back on.
3. WTF IS UP WITH THIS BATTERY? charged, then unplugged, went to bed and overnight 7 hrs dropped to 40%. i literally did nothing. gps was off too. ???
When I was on the stock firmware, my battery sucked. I rooted/rom'd my phone and ever since, the battery is stellar. I can go an entire day and have 30% when I go to bed, which is where I plug it in. I play games, use it during the day for whatever too. My work e-mail is on it so I get e-mails all day, I stream music in the car and I do have Google Now enabled and have no issues. GPS is also enabled.
4. is stock any good?
I tried to use stock for about a month and though I got used to it, I am a techy and a tinkerer and know the benefits of AOSP roms and AOSP Android. This however is a personal choice. If you know how to do it or can at the very least follow instructions, its a piece of cake. I recommend AOKP ( aokp.co ) or CM10. They tend to have the least issues and frequent updates to make it better all the time. I never had any interest in the extra 'features' Samsung put in the stock firmware so I didn't miss any of them when I went AOSP.
5. what are the top roms right now?
As said before, AOKP and CM10
6. is there a top "kernel"
I tend to use the kernel that came with AOKP. I have AOKP on my Nexus 7 too, but use the Franco Kernel. I haven't tried Franco on my S3 only because its fast as hell. I put Franco on my N7 because there was a noticible speed bump with it.
7. any must have apps like the s1 had? like titanium, etc
I finally bought Titanium when I got the S3 and am glad I did. The auto backup.restore is great. Wifi File Explorer Pro is great to have too if you don't have a cable handy to transfer files to and from your phone but do have a wifi connection handy. I got mine off Amazon's app store but I bet its on the Android Play Store too.
8. any other comments? thanks!
Have fun with the phone. Tinker and try new things to see what suits you best. Its very hard to truly brick your phone (if possible at all since Odin is awesome) so you can always get it back to stock and try again.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but it seems relevant...
I've been searching for a little while and can't figure which root method is the best/newest right now... Any suggestions? I'm not necessarily looking for easy, just a proven method that works.
Thanks..

The Lean Kernel is a great kernel to use and works with AOKP and AOSP ROMs.
Been using it for 4 months and been getting substantial battery life.
Its a practically fool proof phone. Buy root explorer ( a must) and titanium backup and don't flash anything you don't find on the at&t forum and you will be fine. Its easy to try out certain fixes and play around a lot.

[Q] New to the Nexus Scene: Battery and ROM

Hi there,
I recently purchased a used Galaxy Nexus from eBay after having seen the good spec and for the low price. I have a few questions before I receive the phone and I'd like to know what ROM would be the best to use, I have seen a stable Cyanogenmod is this the best? Also, I have seen some questions around issues on battery life, has anyone using this ROM had any problems and if so what advice could you give?
I have previously owned the Orange SF 1 and 2 and was not satisfied with battery life after having changed the ROM etc. and I don't want to have those issues with this phone. So, I appreciate any help I can get with my questions, thanks!!
Every single rom I've used has pretty much been the same with battery. The battery on the galaxy nexus isn't the best. That's how it was built. No rom is going to magically make it better. Any difference in battery you get will be minimal and depend more on how you use your phone. I suggest try out some ROM and kernel combinations and see what works for you. There are plenty to chose from and honestly, they are all good. You aren't going to get one single answer from everyone here.

Thanks for your reply. All right, does the battery for you last on a day to day basis? I don't want to mess about with ROMs too much, I am looking for that one ROM that would be most stable and I won't have to change. What is the stock Android like on the Nexus, also I have seen "PARANOIDANDROID" to be very popular so is that good, what do you use? Thanks again!

I am not one to answer these questions. I work at a desk all day with a charger in my phone pretty much the whole day so battery has never been an issue. But if you arent doing a lot to your phone all day like streaming music and movies and gaming then you should be fine. As for your other question, I have been on a different ROM every week since 4.3 came out. lol. All of them are nice and smooth and good ROMs. If you like a lot of features, go with Paranoid Android. If you like minimal stock go with Cyanogenmod or any other AOSP ROM. Stock isnt all that bad either though. Its like I said, try some out and find what you like. As long as you know what you are doing, you shouldnt have any problems flashing a bunch of stuff. Thats the fun part anyway.

I cant think of any unstable ROMs that we have. The good thing about the Galaxy Nexus is that the developers dont have to do any workarounds to get things working. Its a completely unlocked phone with all the tools for developing available for them. So all the ROMs that are made pretty much have everything working in it.
EDIT: Oh, and just make sure you use the ROM that is made for your device. If you have the unlocked GSM version, you need ROMs made for "Maguro".

EDIT: Oh, and just make sure you use the ROM that is made for your device. If you have the unlocked GSM version, you need ROMs made for "Maguro".

Thanks a lot for all your help! Since, I have installed Cyanogenmod and stuck to Android 4.2, as ParanoidAndroid wasn't for me. I have also used the Touchwiz UI and it looks great. The battery life I am happy with it even though it does go down a little more than average, but it's fine for me. Thanks again, great phone!

[Q] who still uses KK on the tab??

just wondering if anyone still uses KK on the tab or have you moved up to LP 5.0 or 5.1 ...

I don't own tab but personally I think lollipop is a failed OS. Too bad for battery life although overall performance is better.
Back to kitkat N9005 Tweaked3.95 + LK3.17
My T800 ran for 260 days on kitkat without needing to be rebooted or tuned off even once now that is stability and i used it every day, when i did turn it off it was just to recalibrate the battery.
Too many reported problems with lollipop from less battery life, to lines on the screen, touchscreen problem, flash led problems, too much white in the stock apps and setting menu, stupid on an oled display.
I rooted my T800 and fixed the microsd problem, added AC3 support to the stock video player so why do i need kitkat, not saying i will not upgrade in the future to android m.
John.
I'm in the process of downgrade right now!
Ye i just flashed lollipop rom yesterday and now im rolling back to kk, i dont know if samsung is just trolling or what. you get a tiny status bar & notif panel then a blown up recent app manager, wtf? Plus no official xposed, and everything is just white & sky blue :/
A lot of people on SamMobile are saying that lollipop is a wasted update as it offers nothing new, and introduces a load of problems, also they are not happy at the way Samsung releases the updates.
http://www.sammobile.com/2015/06/16/samsungs-software-update-policy-is-seriously-messed-up/
John.
For now, I believe they'll keep releasing 5.0 for older devices, and 5.1 for new ones.
Older models will always be one step behind, it's called marketing and forcing "impatient customers" to upgrade their device.
Although I notice these T700 and T800 5.0 versions keep getting patched with new updates and more stability, I believe we'll only get 5.1 when Android M is released for newer devices.
Then after 1, 2, or 3 years from release date and depending on each device, they are forgotten by the manufacturer and software updates are stopped, hoping you'll buy again a newer model, regardless of your device purchase date and condition.
And this in a way, explains why the XDA community is strong.
I finished downgrading. Tablet runs smoother, I can change many things in Xposed and generally, it just works.
Yeah, I choked on the lollipop, but i loved the chocolaty goodness of kitkat, stay on kitkat and don't be a sucker.

In my opinion, I'm on LP because I find it much smoother than KK.
The newer kernel and drivers on lollipop are the main reasons for better performance, which is easily seen in Antutu scores.
The only advantages I find in KK is that it's less buggy and ram leak is better.
When you say performance are you talking about gaming? , if so a lot of people don't game or only use simple games that don't require a great deal of system performance.
I don't game, and i have not seen any laginess on kitkat, i had it running 260 days without any problems i did not reset or shut-down a single time.

With LP you do need to reboot now and then due to ram leak problem.
Let's say LP is faster than KK at the beginning and after a few days it crawls due to ram leak, until you reboot and it's pristine again for the next days.
To be honest, while my initial reactions to Lollipop on both my TAB S and my Nexus 5 was less than favorable, after finding the right alternate ROMs I am very happy. Great performance (I don't game), great battery life, theming that allows me to black out the white menus and I'm very happy on both my devices. Would I be happy on stock? I don't know, and I understand not everyone wants to flash alternate ROMs. What I do think is that Lollipop takes a while to settle in and make sure you don't have an app that is incompatible (Samsung messed with ART). If you dive into it for only a couple of days, and you are really used to KitKat, of course you will want to go back. After using Lollipop for a while now, I would never go back.
Just my opinion. Not trying to sell anything to folks who disagree.
It`s great if you can tune lollipop the way you want, but most people cannot do this, and get stuck on a buggy stock rom until the next official update, which might never arrive, thank-you Samsung.

Tend to agree. At first I wasn't keen on lollipop, but after using for a while and a little tweaking its running just fine. Dont know what this ram leak thing is all about as I've seen nothing of it. I would have thought, whatever that was, almost all manufacturers would have patched it by now including Samsung.

I have lolipop on three devices Nexus 5&10 (5.1.1) and a Tab S 10.5 (5.0.2). Right from the beginning both tablets have been rock solid with a small but noticable bump in speed. On the other hand my Nexus 5 lost its rock solid kitkat stability and no matter what I do, short of re-flashing Kitkat, I cannot seem to fix it.

Did you do an reset before or after updating to lollipop, as you say you have had no problems.

Assuming you are asking about my Tab S experience, I used the guide in this forum to root without tripping Knox. I had to downgrade to stock Kitkat then root then upgrade to stock Lollipop. As soon as you downgrade using Odin you must do a factory reset in stock recovery, so yes I reset and always after the firmware change. In fact I've done the whole process several times as I've tried theming and every time I changed framework-res.apk it borked the UI and I need to do the whole process again.
At this time I've sworn off changing framework-res.apk. It is not a total write off as Flashfire back ups recover everything like a nadroid backup. Its weakness is that if you cannot start the app you can not do a restore. All that due to not wanting to loose my warranty on a two month old device so cannot flash a custom recovery like TWRP.
I did successfully flash from Lollipop B0E2 to B0E3 (boot, recover, system images) using Flashfire. That upgrade did not require a factory reset. In fact my user data, apps, root (SuperSU) and settings remained intact. All I need to do was re-flash any SuperSU policies I had previously installed along with any apps I installed in /system such as Viper4Android.
Specifically the upgrade and resulting experience was almost identical to upgrading Lollipop on my Nexus devices (5.0 through to 5.1.1), which is very easy and never required a factory reset. Although I usually clear the cache/dalvik just to be safe.

New N5X seems slow

So i have just upgraded from the Nexus 5 and very happy with most things, but the screen seems very slow to respond. The phone is obviously faster and runs very well, but just scrolling up and down lists, it seems like there is a lag between my finger and the picture. Is this normal? It feels like even the Nexus 5 is much more responsive.
I read a few bits about encryption slowing phones down if its not hardware supported. I had intended on disabling the encryption when i got it but soon found it that there is no easy way to do so. Whats the best procedure to do this and would it make any difference?
Thanks.
I had issue with lag, and even had Google send out a replacement because I thought I had a defective phone. It was unbearably slow, especially when using the camera. I finally broke down and rooted my phone and disabled the encryption. It is a night and day difference! I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. There is an all-in-one tool in the original development thread I used and then installed the Pure Nexus rom.

Thinking lag is a hit and miss because mine didn't lag at all un-rooted and encrypted. Granted that was only like 12 hours of being at work, so an hour usage.
I haven't had any lag on stock encrypted, I have had this phone for 3 weeks, and runs quick and responsive for me

This device comes with its user storage encrypted out of the box, that way no one can obtain access to your files if you were to lose it. For example the FBI is trying to force Apple to decrypt an iphone for them right now which is bringing a lot of attention to the subject.
Anandtech has shown encryption can lower the storage speeds by about 30% on the 5x versus the LG G4 which uses the exact same NAND. However even at 30% reduced speed the NAND is still considerably faster than both the Nexus 6 and Nexus 5 and theoretically shouldn't cause any issues.
I have no slow downs with my device BTW, it is stock, not rooted, and encrypted as it was coming out of the box.

^^ What he said. And definitely root and flash a custom ROM and kernel. Otherwise you'll be missing out on much of the glory there is in owning a Nexus device. You'll also have more customization options and things should be a bit faster as well.

Before you get settled in, I suggest you try different ROMS until you find one you like. Some are chock full of features, some are more performance minded. Depends on your tastes. I'm currently running Ubermallow ROM, which is in my signature. As for kernels, it's the same story. All have different features and abilities but I'm running Phasma Kernel which focuses on performance.
Experiment. That's the beauty of a Nexus device. There's something for everyone.

Stable - Daily Driver capable ROMs?

Ok, so I hate asking this question but I need to update from my S4 because I want a better camera, and faster CPU so I can't try the roms directly
I am looking at the Note 4 or Galaxy S5. Unfortunately the S5 looks like it has more active support, but I really want a Note 4 because of the better hardware (basically everything, UHS Storage, more RAM, CPU, bigger battery, Optical Stabilization...)
What ROMs are you all running as a daily driver? I've been searching and it doesn't look like there are a ton of super stable ROM's in active support like with the S5
I prefer AOSP but stability is most important to me (having a fully functional phone). My least favorite thing in the world is when my GPS stops working right when I need to take a turn in chaotic traffic

I ain't gonna get into a whole Rom comparison story, again. But i will state this. The N4 is an awesome phone, straight up, nothing compares to it. I just bought another one. But as it is aging, development on it is slowing down, But there are a handful of great devs still here with amazing work. I use to also like aosp for its lean state but i would have to say touchwiz is less error prone. Only my opinion though!
I can't compare it with the s5 development , never looked there.
Came from a s5... No regrets.
Note 4 is superior.
Thanks for responding fellas.
Are you both running the stock Samsung firmware??
I dont know if I can handle TouchWiz, but at the same time I don't think I can give up the Note 4 hardware (over the s5).
I think I'm going to pick one up and play with it. If none of the AOSP roms is stable enough for me, I'll stick with a model TouchWiz rom or go back to stock. I'll update this when I figure out that part!
EDIT:
Well shoot - I managed to snag an S5 for $60 on ebay - sight un-seen. From one of those larger used phone re-sellers
Probably half as cheap but I am going to sorely miss OSS from the Note 4, increased battery, quick charge, and UHS storage. I figure I can sell my S4 off, and upgrade to a Note 4 in the future.
Good news is that Lineage OS is officially supported on the Sprint S5, ASOP is a huge reason that I love Android (and kind of loathe Samsung)
I have a Sprint Note 4 for sale for $150. Combined with the OBAR Rom and a ZeroLemon 10,000 mah battery this phone is a tank. Mine just ate dirt after I updated it to 6.0.1. DO NOT UPDATE. Two days after the update I got EMMC error (Nand died) and now anyone else I speak to about the 6.0.1 update killed their phone. I bought two Note 4's and put OBAR back on it. No issues and everything runs fast and smooth.

Hell I have updated, and down graded my phone numerous times, and phone still rock solid.. I went back to 5.1.1 because it is faster, battery life can't be beat, plus you do not have to give permission each time you install a app.. Also I can get rid of all Sprint bloat ware without using a 3rd party app. I also like the square icons rather than the rounded, and the icon size is perfect.

Have modembase pg1 with mm.

Came from s5 and I keep getting dropped signals... In places where I didn't have an issue before.

Well PG1 is MM (6.0) so if you wanna stay on it id look for a MM rom
how ever Hybrid 3.0 is LP (5.1) and yes my signal is much better on 5.1 than 6.0 but each phone is different
but for me hybrid is perfect no random reboots and been using it as a daily driver for a lil more than a full year
and it plays nice with xposed... can help if you need it.
the op will have the necessary steps to revert back to 5.1 if need be :good:
