[Q] Please help me remove Evervolv! :'( - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I have bought a HTC Desire phone over the internet and it seems to work fine but there is a slight problem. I absolutely hate the Evervolv ROM. I am very nooby with the technical terms (meaning I dont even know what flashing means... etc... ) I have spent several hours looking for a way to install a normal android ROM (just the most basic one, so that my home screen looks like the one in the picture of this model - I don't know whether it's gingerbread or jellybean or something else, as I said I don't understand those terms)
So can anyone please help me either to get rid of Evervolv or to install the stock android ROM? :crying:
I would really appreciate your help!

First of all, saying that you hate the Evervolv rom is quite disrespectful to the developers who have spent lots of time trying (and succeeding) to get 4+ roms running on the desire.
So by the sounds of things, what you want is to flash a sense gingerbread rom? First check to see that youve got a custom recovery installed (you probably will). Turn the phone off, then hold volume down + power to get into hboot. Then wait a few seconds and scroll to RECOVERY using the volume rockers and use power to select it.
Let me know what recovery you have.

Hi,
if you want to find factory android images (we call it Stock roms), you can take a look here. They are windows binaries (exe). So you can try this. Or if you want to try some other rom, you can do it wia recovery how Chromium_ said. It's no as hard as it seemes to be .

How to hack / modify Desire Kernels???

Hi all!
I have spent over half an hour searching but to no avail so thought I'd ask here, how are the kernels hacked or modified?
When it comes to the real tech stuff I'm a bit lost, and to be honest before I stumbled across this site I knew nothing about making custom ROMS, but thanks to all of you out there, you have taught me loads without me asking much, so its here I need to ask!
Thanks in advance for your time & replies,
Arty.
just search the web for "linux kernel" the android kernel is a linux one.
when you know a bit about linux kernel you can add kernel mods to it, as in android.
you just need to download the source of the kernel modify it and compile it than.
hope this helped a bit
ps.: and if you dont have the source you have to be a tech/kernel genius like -snq
Thanks for your reply there crendot!
I was afraid I'd have to know about Linux stuff, which to be quite honest I dont!
I have messed about with a Ubuntu Virtual Machine in the past (when I first read how to root the Desire) but I find it too difficult to understand, I'm much more at home with the old DOS commands personally!
Only reason I ask is that my fone is playing up and has overheating / reboot loop issues with anything greater than Android 2.2 (since it came back from repair when I dropped it & cracked the screen completely) and so far I am stuck with my own slightly customed Rooted 2.2 with standard features (no 4-in-1 menu, no wake & unlock on trackpad and the DSP manager wont work) also, I have not yet tested it, but I know only a few kernels will let me send & recieve MMS, the previous build was a lightly customed LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM, but alas kept bootlooping after it became warm and I found I couldnt do much with it :-(
I am hoping to get a shiney new Sensation soon, but until then I wanted to know how to modify the kernel to add / remove stuff!
Is there an easy way to take a kernel file & be able to 'read' it so I could copy the stuff I need into the stock kernel at all, or is that my wishfull thinking again?
Thanks again & sorry about the long reply!
Arty.
to understand what a kernel for the desire is, u can download the stock one on the htcdev.com site http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
for example u can download the latest for our desire: "HTC Bravo – GB MR – 2.6.35 kernel source code"
that is the source code..u will see there are thousands of .c files...is not easy at all modify the kernel..it requires strong skills on linux and C language
about the send sms and mms, that is related to the rom and ur apn settings i think..not to the kernel..the kernel handle very low level actions..
maybe u would like to make custom roms..this is a bit much easy if u just cook it for example with the android kitchen (search for it)..the rom contain the kernel and the operating system and some apps
so lets check the facts!
did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
or have you flashed the new rom instant?
i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms
if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^
andQlimax:
Thanks for your reply also!
I know the APN settings for the mobile data & the MMS as I have written them down, the strange thing is I rooted my fiancee's Desire with the same ROM I was using at the time & she couldnt send or recieve MMS either (I'm O2 and she on Orange, both contract) and I have only found a few custom ROMs that allow the sending & recieving of MMS messages.
Also, I can make custom ROM's, I use Android Kitchen for most of the stuff (such as de-odexing, adding root, bash, busy box etc) but I find mostly when I bake the ROM using the kitchen I have errors on install, so I just prefer to use the kitchen for adding the needed stuff, then I'll just use windows to add / remove apps, boot animations & the audio files I want and just zip it myself & flash which has a higher success rate if I'm honest!

so lets check the facts!
Q: did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
A: No, I didnt have stock ROM on, I still had either LeeDroid HD or a HD InsertCoin ROM, which when I got the phone back I did a nandroid restore (I make them quite regular & copy them to my PC for extra piece of mind!)
Q: or have you flashed the new rom instant?
A: I also have installed an untouched ROM(untouched by me) a day or so after as the nandroid backup wasnt the version I wanted, I was due to be on holiday to Blackpool for a week, so I flashed the LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM on both my desire & my fiancee's desire, hers was stable, mine I couldnt have the screen on for long before it got too hot (managed about 5 picture captures before I had to turn screen off for a while or it got too hot) then thing is, my fiancees gets got too, mine is the metal holders for the memory & sim cards, i either have to place something cold on them like a glass or even hold a fan to it for a few minutes until it cools down again!
Q:i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
A:My current ROM is the standard one after downgrading HBOOT & using Unrevoked, but I used the phone's update feature to update everything to 2.2, then I rooted it and all works fine, BUT, if I add any modifications, like circle battery it is too much for the phone & gets too hot & power cycles, it gets to the boot anim then automatically reboots again, it can do this for about half hour before it works again, but I mostly just pull the battery & put something cold on the affected area! Yesterday I put my fone in the freezer for 10 mins, but using even the most basic customisation was getting hot again so I reverted back.
Q:if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
I have tried a number of other ROM's, but I think I will just stick with what I know works for now!
Q:dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
A: thanks for that, think I'll leave them alone for now lol!
Q: i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
A: Nothing went wrong with the flashing, as Ive done it so much in the past year or so I know what its sucessfull or not!
Q: ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^
A:Thanks!
I really dont know what the cowboys done with my fone, but they have totally screwed it up, the microphone dont work and I have to almost eat the damn thing n shout, even then sometimes nobody can hear me! The WiFi signal is horrendous since it came back, can only get a full signal if I sit on top of the router, so using the WiFI out of the room is now out of the question! I also noticed they had cut off or pulled off something that I am convinced is the WiFi aerial, it sits just under the flash, a black tab it looks like, they insist they didnt do it, I KNOW otherwise!
When I first saw the phone, the back cover wouldnt fit on & it looked like they hadnt installed everything right, so they had it back as also the in-call speaker didnt work either, there are still outstanding problems, but as I have left it so long (main shop in Glasgow, me in Paisley with no way of getting there myself) I doubt they will do anything about it, i am SOO angry there isnt a swear word I dont shout every time the bloody fone hets hot & power cycles!
Again thanks for all your replies & sorry for the essay lol!
Arty.
hi, ok it really sounds like they have messed up your little desire!
first of all i want to apologize i thought you dont have a clue about anything ^^
so i would suggest you try to flash a new radio maybe the 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 helps, if you have it on your mobile reflash it just to be sure(if you have a different hboot, you have to do it with fastboot)
if this didnt help, i would say you try to flash the RUU
and when that fails i would start yelling at the customer support
wish you the best
ps.: i just started thinking if it is maybe the battery, change it with a/the other one

[Q] downgrade desire to froyo

hi
im a noob please help. i have a desire. htc upgraded it to froyo. then 2.3 came around and htc said they would not upgrade and i was left with little choice but to flash . i rooted my desire , did a nand back up of the froyo with sense rom,and flashed cm succesfully. i was a happy camper. now cm has a lot of problems, like my desire suddenly just switches off with no warning. battery issues where the battery dies with no warning,i have done all sorts of battery calibrations. nothing works. i would like to get my froyo back with sense.
i would like to know how to flash my backed up froyo, is there something special i need to do so as to not brick my desire? or do i just restore the rom from rom manager? i am currently running cm 7.1 stable,i am on clockworkmod 2.5.07
please help..as much as i love cm , it has a few bugs atleast right now...
Well, the whole "switching off" thing is weird (to me at least) but you may want to consider instead of flashing back to Froyo, to flash some other ROM with Gingerbread. The issue is, of course, if you want to keep sense, then I believe there are some ROMs that keep sense.
I just got this account and I can't send links but have a quick search, I'm sure there is something out there.
And once again, in my opinion, you should stick with Gingerbread (or maybe wait a few more weeks for ICS)
Good luck
Boot into recovery (same place you made your nand backup) and this time choose to restore from your backup. This assumes you haven't changed your hboot partitions (if you have you'll need the stock hboot) Good luck!
how do i know if i have changed my hboot positions? is there a way of finding out?

thanks..myabe i should stick with 2.3.7 till something new comes along....i also want to know because i plan on getting a galaxy note ..and if that happens i want to give this desire awa to someone who may not have the patience i hacve with cm giving me black screens and being unresponsive at times....
Have you tried MIUI? I've used that ROM for a few months and worked like a charm for me. It may solve your issues plus the user interface is great and very intuitive.

[Q] ICS 8.0 Gone wrong. How to fix it?

Hi,
I'm not a very well versed with this rooting thing so I hope you guys can help me out here with some guidance. I have rooted a Desire HD for my friend quite some time ago. I follow step by step tutorial and managed to get it up and working with a custom ROM despite not knowing what half the steps are about.
Now, I tried to flash ICS 8.0 for him and it seems that it wasnt flashed properly as it is on a reboot loop over and over again. I did a factory restore before flashing and flashed using clockworkmod.
The main problem lies within I only remember parts and pieces of how I manage to root his phone the last time. How can I get it back working again without wiping off the root and s-off etc. Or is this just a small problem where I can reflash the rom without having to do all those again?
Let me know if you need any information about the phone. Thanks
If you are still able to get into recovery, make sure you do a FULL WIPE. Afterwards re-flash the rom and reboot your phone, should be fine.
---------- Post added at 10:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ----------
And something more:
if you're not sure what is the correct wipe you must do before installing a new rom, download this Super Wipe script (it's actually from ARHD but works with any rom ofcourse as it's just a full wipe), then you are 100% sure the problem will not lay with the wiping.
I tried to hold on to volume up key while powering on and all I get is 3 short vibrates and the yellow led on top blinking. The screen is blank, not even lit. Any idea what this means?
turn the phone off, pull the battery out and turn the phone on while holding the volume down button.
Now get into recovery and to a full wipe
so clear the cache partitions etc.
than flash again
btw ICS 8.0 does not excist
i gues you mean the 8.0 build from lord C ?
hi!
I've managed to get it to boot up in recovery mode! It was my stupidity to boot it up while pressing volume up when actually you had to press volume down. Got ICS up and running. Sorry for the confusion. Yep I was referring to the version 8 of the IceColdSandwich
I'll be sure to lurk around for more updates!!

This is what happens when you dont read. These roms are always in the beta considered beta nad not really meant for people that dont know what they are doing or not willing to spend the time to read about it. Custom roms are not meant to be flashed to be part of the cool crowd. They are meant to help people learn how to do develop things on their own and how to trouble shoot issues.

I was expecting bugs. I'm on that likes to try out the newest things. But never mind, it's my friends phone and he couldnt bear with the bugs. It rebooted a few times randomly last night. Told me to flash it back to gingerbread for him. I'll keep an eye for the thread for more updates. Thank you all so much for the help guys!

Stuck in a very, murky, muddy, Desire HD puddle......

Right. Here we go.
Yesterday, I used HTC devtool and easy ace tool to be rooted and unlocked bootloader. Im still S-On. Ace Pvt Hboot.
Had all sorts of problems. Firstly, with PacMan, which looked and worked fantastic, except no GPS lock, AT ALL, (important to me) soi tried Jellytime and CFX, but all three had issues, and GPS worked on none. I believe this is because the radio is the original one, but dont have the knowledge, skill, or importantly courage to flash an updated radio.
So, tried to flash and EXT4 recovery, with the tool from Google Play. Will not work. Saves to a folder on SD but still boots in CWM recovery So I cant use EXT roms properly. I tried to go back to PacMan, but I cant even do that. I wipe and format, and reflash the boot image, but every time it wont load correctly - something ddoesnt work, and I get errors. Latest was Android Keyboard is not working, so I cant do anything!
Attempted to put ViperDHD rom on to go back to something like stock (GPS worked great on stock!!) and worked ok, with some funny issues on initial boot but settled down. But, STILL no GPS.
Decided stuff it, go back to stock . Downloaded stock RUU and attempted to install, but, of course, it wont work.
So, in short, I have a fantastic Desire HD, that wont flash EXT4, wont go back to stock on RUU, and I cannot find a ROM that will work with GPS. On some, wireless doesnt work either.......
So, if someone could help me to either make my GPS work on ICS or Jellybean, or, help me go back to where I was, (GPS working!!) before I started all this, I'd be eternally grateful. I dont have money to spend on a new phone, so I'll even put some money in your development coffers as a thankyou for helping me out. I just need me smartphone to be smart again, not the useless pile of Sh*te it is right now
My previous post about lack of GPS proved fruitless, no replies. BUt I am hoping that one of you Desire HD gurus will rise to the challenge that I face right now and help. I cant but you a beer, I cant do much at all, but of you help me fix my problem I will, I promise, be eternally grateful. I'll even send your missus flowers by Interflora if that helps!!!:silly: Seriously, I really need someone who knows there stuff to give me a hand out of a hole.
My thanks in advance.
Phil
Hey there. Seems like you've gotten yourself into quite a little mess there.
First of all, I'd recommend you flash BlackICE. Its a Gingerbread based ROM but I know for 250% fact that it is rock solid and the GPS works.
After that, I believe you're going to have to manually flash the recovery using fast boot (hit up the link for the Ace Think Tank in my signature for guides and any additional help you might need)
Finally, another bulletproof ROM I recommend is IceColdSandwich. I personally know that this ROM is 100% stable and that the GPS works.
If you need any additional assistance, feel free to post in the Ace Think Tank. And as always, be sure to drop a thanks if I helped or anyone else helps!
Edit: ViperDHD isn't based on stock my friend. Its based on the One V stock ROM as far as I know, so its been ported from that. An amazing stock based ROM is Android Revolution HD, which I've tested personally and found to be bloody amazing!
Also, the RUU won't flash as you'll have to relock your boot loader. Use fast boot to to that if you still want to return to stock
Edit 2: also. Please refrain from creating multiple threads. I know its tempting but the desire HD is slipping into the legacy stage, where I treat and development is slowing down. If you must get an answer quick, either 'bump' your thread (simply post the word 'bump' and it'll push it to the top of the list, so it'll show as unread. Be aware that you can only do this once every 24 hours) or post in the Ace Think Tank.
Thanks

Thanks for coming back to me mate, it is greatly appreciated.
Ok, deep breath, and after my above and considering your reply, I ihave flashed an EXT4 recovery from Fastboot, but, this will not load. Goes to HTC screen and stops. Im sure I can put it right with EasyAce which I will try now.
I will try then to put Black ice on as you advised and post back.
really appreciate your advice!

Seems I cant boot into a recovery at all now. Tried to reflash with EasyAce tool but getting errors. I dont have a working recovery, so cant flash a rom
Ok, somehow, via the red wine and stress induced fog, I managed to get EXT recovery working. Im now tryig to get a rom working. Tried PacMan again, bit straight off I get AOKP keyboard not working error and I didnt have to go through the Google setup - why cant I get a clean boot - this confuses me?? I wipe Cache, Dalvik. Factory reset - same problem. I have even tried formatting system from Advanced - same????
At least I can flash RIMs now!!
Thanks again for your help
You are still s-on yes?
Have you flashed boot.IMG?
If you are s-on you must flash the boot.IMG (contained inside the ROM's zip file) using a PC and "fastboot flash boot boot.img" every time you change to a new, different ROM.

I have indeed mate, one thing I learned early on.
I have managed to get JellyTime on ok, but, again, no gps and also the potentiometer for the compass etc appears to not work!! Arrrrrgh!!!!
I think the issue must be the radio. Can I flash a new radio if im S-On and bootloader unlocked? Im ok with fastboot stuff if I need that to push a radio, but, I read that flashing a radio is inherently more "dangerous" than flashing the recovery etc.
I hoped the EXT4 recovery would make a difference, but seems not to have at all. FWIW, I also did the GPS antenna mod yesterday, and it hasnt helped either. My gps appears to work, but its very poor. I left it outside for 10 mins last night looking up at clear sky and it didnt show one satellite.
Think it might be time to sell the phone
You need to be S-Off to flash a radio.
I still cant get my head around why I cant get PacMan back on ok? It worked a treat first time, except for gps. Now, it will not install properly at all. It boots ok, but straight away I get keyboard has stopped working, and it doesnt go through the account setup etc.
But the potentiometer works!!!!!
Where I am at now.
Put CWM recovery back on, and tried Cyanogen 7.1. Would not boot. Several attempts at wipe and reflash did not cure this. So I am now running Android Revolution HD7.3. I thought as it was close to a stock ROM it may work, but, still no joy.
I put other halfs Desire HD next to mine and started the GPS on them both. Hers locked in less than a minute. Half an hour later, I had seen one brief flicker of two satellites on mine, Still no fix.
So, I dont know what to do really. I ish I could put the phone back to how it was, but doesnt look like that is going to be an option. Tried the RUU, but it doesnt work
I still cannot understand why none of these roms will work with the GPS when it was perfect before on stock 2.3.5??
What's wrong with the RUU? I would try flashing a fresh recovery image from fastboot, then wiping everything under the sun and flashing ARHD again.

bootloop/lockscreen freezed

hello. i bought an old wildfire; s-off, h-boot 1.0.xxxx and i installed new stock rom (method flashing zip via bootloader) and the boot is veeery long; i think i waited 10 minutes, and after that the stock lockscreen remained blocked...i cant turn off the display, actioning the volume or making any gesture...is freezed, dead... and still same if i remove battery and turn on again...what can be done?

Hi there, I saw your comment on the other thread but decided to reply here. If you have reflashed the stock rom and its crashing at the lock screen you only have two choices really. 1: Try a custom rom like cyanogenmod 7 to see if the lighter rom runs on your old hardware. 2: Give up on the phone.
I accept that 2 may not be what you want to hear but this device is very old now (in phone years) and a lot of the services that used to support it well, like the android market (Google play) do not really support this device. If you only really want to use the phone for phone calls a cheap "dumb" phone will perform much better than this device in that regard.
If you do want to try though, cm7 is your best bet as it gave the best "performance"on this device back in its hayday.
Best of luck.
