[Solved] New questions about Android

Everything is working nice for me now, except for missing ÆØÅ, but I guess Ill get used to it.
The os is a bit slow, but meh.
So my I have found answers to my questions, but below are the original ones.

Thanks for the information. Big thanks to this wonderful forum, because I can run Android on my phone!
But as I have tested it I have some questions:
1. The wifi is really slow. It feels like I am using Internet through the SIM card, but I am indeed not. (I took out the SIM card to test). And there isn't any problem with our Internet, because it is fast and good on everything else.
Downloaded some older files and the WiFi is working much better now!
2. I got some problems with vertical lines, but after readings some FAQs I found out about a setting. It has worked overnight, but is it permanent?
This problem is solved, haven't experienced any vertical lines after boot fix.
3. I'm not sure if GPS is working, because it take ages to start. Just says loading... loading... etc.
GPS is working, but slow.
4. Since I am from Norway it seems like I have custom physical keyboard. (with ÆØÅ) And because of that all the FN keys are messed up, well except for numbers.But as I read somewhere the default mapping for Tytn II should be FN + Q = @
And that is how my keyboard look now. But it should be FN + Q = ? according to the text on the keyboard and how it worked in WM.
And is there any way to do the same for the Android keyboard?
Anything I can edit without too much hazzle to fix this? Cause its a pain to write texts without the Norwegian letters.
I found a custom kernel and it is working nice (I have asked for a custom build of it so I can have ÆØÅ too, but mapping is good)
Besides that I am SO happy with it! I just love the menus and how its so easy to touch compared to WM.

Okey, first of all.. this is probably a newbie question and I might have found my answer if I searched for a while.
But as both you and me know, it would've taken me much more time to search and read a bunch of threads than it would be to just simply ask the question.
I am a newbie at the whole ROM and radio business on phones. To be honest I just found out yesterday that it was even possible.
As you might have guessed I want to run Android on my phone. Im going to run it from the microSD card etc.
Well there werent really any problems to download the Android files together with Haret and then put them on the sd card. (If I wasnt able to do that I wouldnt bother.)
The problem is that when trying to run Android from within WM (6.1) it just freezes at full bar with the text "Go Go Go". The whole phone is just frozen and I have to restart it.
Well as I read on the troublehooting guide on "androidonhtc.com" I have to update my radio which then leads me to this website.
Fine so far. The problem is that I do not really want to mess with the phone itself. First I want to know how I can "backup" the radio so if I mess up something while flashing I can easily go back.
Second of all Im not really sure which radio which works with which rom.
I am running the original rom which came with the phone and I do not really want to mess up anything.
Here are the infos I got from the phone:
Rom version: 3.29.409.0 NOR (Yeah, Im from Norway)
Rom date: 05/05/08
Radio version: 1.65.16.25
Protocol version: 25.83.40.02H
The phone is HTC Tytn II running Windows Mobile 6.1
The guide on androidonhtc said that I needed "1.65.24.xx or 1.71.xx.xx"
Can I then use a 1.71.xx even though I have a 1.65.16.25 now?
tl;dr:
I want to know which radio I can use for the phone with the specs above.

The recommended radio for most android builds is 1.71.xx, however it will still run on older radios, but may experience some audio, wifi, bt, gps, and possibly other issues.
If you intend to run from SD card, then this may not be much more than an annoyance, since you can reboot to Winmo at any time, and as a newcomer to android this would have been my advice anyway.
To upgrade the radio is a simple step usually, provided your device is prepared properly.
A prepared device means that is ready and able to be flashed, and this requires HardSPL, ( basically an unlocked bootloader that allows you to flash roms/radios/ splash screens etc).
I recommend reading through the guides and tutorials sticky in the 'main' rom forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533976
This should give you an understanding of what might be involved in starting to flash your device, and should answer many of your questions about radios, flashing, unlocking, roms and other things you may need to know about before proceeding.

So if I update to 1.71.09.01 while still using the original ROM, I wont get any big problems?
Or do I have to upgrade the ROM too?
You see.. this stuff is confusing to me. I consider myself a PC geek, but I suck at phones.
The instructions are pretty easy to follow, but its not so easy to know if I'm able to revert the stuff I'm doing.
I want to do as little "damage" to the phone as possible.

You don't need to upgrade the ROM. All you need to do is install hardSPL, then install the radio. If you install hardSPL properly, your phone will be almost impossible to brick. It's really the first thing any person should do to their phone when beginning to do modifications. You can't "back up" your radio, but all available radio versions, including the one you currently have, are available HERE. So if you ever want to go back to your original radio, it will always be there. I honestly don't know the difference between the radios, I just know that certain versions are recommended depending on what ROM you are using, for the best signal and least bugs with wifi and bluetooth, as zenity previously mentioned. The reason why I want to try out other mobile OS and ROMs is that I hate how the menus are so frigging tiny on the WM 6.1
If I'm trying to do stuff fast I always click the wrong button.. And yeah I have lost my stylus.

Basically the higher the radio version number, the newer the radio software, as our devices aged, HTC brought out a number of software updates.
Our network carriers usually have custom ROM's which have a 'matched' radio for best operation, however even these 'matched' radios had small bugs, which were patched by releasing newer radio versions, of which 1.71.xx was the lastest and last official HTC radio for the Kaiser series.
There are also radios from other devices which work with our kaisers, but these are not recommended unless you have a particular need for one of those.
As far as the ability to 'undo' any modifications you make is concerned, it can all be reversed and your device put back the way it was relatively easily, instructions for this are best found on the wiki pages for the kaiser, along with a load of other information about radios, roms, flashing etc.
But unless the reason for not messing with your kaiser is in case you have warranty concerns, then pretty much everything is 'safe' to do, ( there is ALWAYS a risk of a bad flash, or unforseen power cut, but even these are recoverable in all but the most extreme circumstances).
Finally, take everything one step at a time, don't be tempted to rush in and try everything at once, you will make mistakes, you will also learn how to fix them.
As with everything else, remember to backup anything you really cannot afford to lose, get a 128Mb SD card with an HTC ROM on it, and don't panic

I'm having the exact reverse, m FN + Q is ?.

If i remember, fn+q='?' means you are using a tilt keymap on a non tilt keyboard, if you are running from nand, try a non-tilt nbh, if you are running from SD theres a setting in default.txt. ( board-kaiser-keypad.atttilt=1 ) if it's set to 1 change it to 0

No, on the nbh i'm using, the tilt keypad layout is set to 0. But I'm back on ext2 now so it isnt a problem anymore.

I have a HTC Desire and just after I got it I managed to muddle through unbranding it to get rid of the Vodafone addons. At the same time I managed to root it.
I recently decided to take the jump and try some of the non stock ROMs as that's one of the reasons I went for Android.
I have to say there are some great tools out there and my sincere thanks to the developers, namely:
o AlphaRev
o ClockworkMod
o ROM Manager
o unrevoked
Wow nandroid is a real bare metal restore that works ))
When I decided to take the plunge I went through the recommended approach detailed elsewhere in this forum.
I've so far tried LeeDroid, Oxygen & Defrost.
I now have a slight problem that seems (perception) to be getting worse.
In summary, if I reboot into recovery (either power/back or ROM Manager) it sometimes works and more often now doesn't work. When it fails it just hangs at the AlphaRev screen, just a boot screen I guess. When it hangs it never recovers, battery out and try again, again, again .... then it'll work.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this boot into recovery issue ?

This is the issue, people get a brand new shiny phone and the first thing they do - as opposed to actually USING the thing - is find as many ways to bodge it as possible...
People need to actually read everything, take some time to absorb it and then read it again. Then use the phone as chances are unless they're a real app whore they'll never need to worry about internal space...
I've no idea why you're having issues but I assume you don't have a copy of the RUU your Desire originally came with so should you need to return to stock you can?? this is the first thing anyone should do before undertaking any type of customising and would save a lot of headaches

Not quite valid. I've had the phone for a few months now. I originally wanted to get rid of the Vodafone crap as that's caused me issues in the past with other phones, albeit not Android based. At the same time I wanted to go to Froyo which was on the never/never from Vodafone at the time. Again upgrading phones in the past has caused more issues when it's been used for a while.
I work in the IT sector and have dual boot on my laptop (XP & Ubuntu) as they do different things in different environments, so I'm used different look/feel/behaviour. I wanted to try some of the non HTC Sense ROMs, a couple of things bugged me a bit and after all you can try in the Android environment. That after all is the beauty of an Open System as opposed to a closed environment, e.g. Nokia Symbian, M$ Windows.
My only issue I have at the moment seems to be the tempremental behaviour of getting into recovery.
BTW I have a copy of the stock ROM but have no intention of ever going back to a Vodafone branded pre-froyo Android environment.
When I rooted, installed S-OFF, ClockworkMd, ..... I fully accepted the risks and knew that if I bricked the phone, it'd be my fault.

I get it all the time having to "help" people who tried things on their Home PCs or TVs, BluRay, HDMI inerconnect, ..... Shops offer bloody useless help to them. ;-)))

Yes, I've tried reflashing ClockworkMod through ROM Manager, it's currently 2.5.0.7 confirm by ROM manager and when it finally gets into recovery.
It just seems an intemittent issue that only arises when I want to do a Nandroid backup or "play" with the ROMs / Radio etc. The only solution I have is to remove the battery, count to 3 and re-insert it. Then try again.
It's not a show stopper just a real pain, especially when installing a new ROM/Radio when it's supposed to reboot. It's a case of how long do I leave it and hope it recovers to sod it, battery out and pray it's not bricked as a result.

[Q] Demand for custom ROM based off of 1.0.1 update

How many people on here would be interested in flashing a custom ROM (currently the way we do official updating) that incorporates rooting, ad-hoc support, some other parts of touchnooter, and an attempt at working bluetooth? Given something like this would completely void our warranties. Just curious to see if there are enough people interested, therefore I may build something.

Whenever you root you are already voiding your warranty. As mine is far gone (lasted for a couple of hours only), I'm ready to flash it, mostly for increased support on hardware buttons, ready-made ad-hoc access and maybe BT (BT keyboard on Nook! WTF!).

I probably wouldn't be interested in a rooted stock setup that I could do manually with a little more work. But a full CM7 or similar, definitely yes! Is there a working recovery yet? I think Nemith mentioned something about CWM awhile ago, but I'm not sure if he ever looked into it.

working bluetooth would be great. id love to be able to listen to music, answer calls and read books all on the same device at the gym.

A better launcher (Maybe nook-styled) would be great, so that we can easily access our reading docs (pdf, epub, what-ever) and easily do mail/calendar/internet stuff.
Bluetooth is not really important to me as I can do fine with the touch keyboard (short emails anyway).
Booting from the SD card would be a plus... although I do not care about the warranty. I just want to read my pdfs and my docs (mainly work related I must say).

A ROM with a working market, gmail, etc, would be awesome. I had my nook working properly once, back at v1.0.0 firmware, but since i went back to stock to get the v1.0.1 firmware, i have not been able to get the market to search, and while trying to fix that, i end up messing other apps up. Every time. And i've gone back to my stock image twice and did a factory reset and data reset at least three additional times.
Frustrating to say the least.

I´m also very happy with cm7 on my sgs. It would be the very best solution for the new nook...

I am interested. This needs at least a Froyo update so we can do app2sd. CM would work best, then we can use apps that give issues (Kobo etc)

Of course I would love to flash a custom rom. That is the only reason I read the forums in xda is to learn about flashing custom roms. Stock roms are usually too limited.

Right. Here we go.
Yesterday, I used HTC devtool and easy ace tool to be rooted and unlocked bootloader. Im still S-On. Ace Pvt Hboot.
Had all sorts of problems. Firstly, with PacMan, which looked and worked fantastic, except no GPS lock, AT ALL, (important to me) soi tried Jellytime and CFX, but all three had issues, and GPS worked on none. I believe this is because the radio is the original one, but dont have the knowledge, skill, or importantly courage to flash an updated radio.
So, tried to flash and EXT4 recovery, with the tool from Google Play. Will not work. Saves to a folder on SD but still boots in CWM recovery So I cant use EXT roms properly. I tried to go back to PacMan, but I cant even do that. I wipe and format, and reflash the boot image, but every time it wont load correctly - something ddoesnt work, and I get errors. Latest was Android Keyboard is not working, so I cant do anything!
Attempted to put ViperDHD rom on to go back to something like stock (GPS worked great on stock!!) and worked ok, with some funny issues on initial boot but settled down. But, STILL no GPS.
Decided stuff it, go back to stock . Downloaded stock RUU and attempted to install, but, of course, it wont work.
So, in short, I have a fantastic Desire HD, that wont flash EXT4, wont go back to stock on RUU, and I cannot find a ROM that will work with GPS. On some, wireless doesnt work either.......
So, if someone could help me to either make my GPS work on ICS or Jellybean, or, help me go back to where I was, (GPS working!!) before I started all this, I'd be eternally grateful. I dont have money to spend on a new phone, so I'll even put some money in your development coffers as a thankyou for helping me out. I just need me smartphone to be smart again, not the useless pile of Sh*te it is right now
My previous post about lack of GPS proved fruitless, no replies. BUt I am hoping that one of you Desire HD gurus will rise to the challenge that I face right now and help. I cant but you a beer, I cant do much at all, but of you help me fix my problem I will, I promise, be eternally grateful. I'll even send your missus flowers by Interflora if that helps!!!:silly: Seriously, I really need someone who knows there stuff to give me a hand out of a hole.

Hey there. Seems like you've gotten yourself into quite a little mess there.
First of all, I'd recommend you flash BlackICE. Its a Gingerbread based ROM but I know for 250% fact that it is rock solid and the GPS works.
After that, I believe you're going to have to manually flash the recovery using fast boot (hit up the link for the Ace Think Tank in my signature for guides and any additional help you might need)
Finally, another bulletproof ROM I recommend is IceColdSandwich. I personally know that this ROM is 100% stable and that the GPS works.
If you need any additional assistance, feel free to post in the Ace Think Tank. And as always, be sure to drop a thanks if I helped or anyone else helps!
Edit: ViperDHD isn't based on stock my friend. Its based on the One V stock ROM as far as I know, so its been ported from that. An amazing stock based ROM is Android Revolution HD, which I've tested personally and found to be bloody amazing!
Also, the RUU won't flash as you'll have to relock your boot loader. Use fast boot to to that if you still want to return to stock
Edit 2: also. Please refrain from creating multiple threads. I know its tempting but the desire HD is slipping into the legacy stage, where I treat and development is slowing down. If you must get an answer quick, either 'bump' your thread (simply post the word 'bump' and it'll push it to the top of the list, so it'll show as unread. Be aware that you can only do this once every 24 hours) or post in the Ace Think Tank.

Ok, deep breath, and after my above and considering your reply, I ihave flashed an EXT4 recovery from Fastboot, but, this will not load. Goes to HTC screen and stops. Im sure I can put it right with EasyAce which I will try now.
I will try then to put Black ice on as you advised and post back.

Seems I cant boot into a recovery at all now. Tried to reflash with EasyAce tool but getting errors. I dont have a working recovery, so cant flash a rom

Ok, somehow, via the red wine and stress induced fog, I managed to get EXT recovery working. Im now tryig to get a rom working. Tried PacMan again, bit straight off I get AOKP keyboard not working error and I didnt have to go through the Google setup - why cant I get a clean boot - this confuses me?? I wipe Cache, Dalvik. Factory reset - same problem. I have even tried formatting system from Advanced - same????
At least I can flash RIMs now!!

You are still s-on yes?
Have you flashed boot.IMG?
If you are s-on you must flash the boot.IMG (contained inside the ROM's zip file) using a PC and "fastboot flash boot boot.img" every time you change to a new, different ROM.

I have indeed mate, one thing I learned early on.
I have managed to get JellyTime on ok, but, again, no gps and also the potentiometer for the compass etc appears to not work!! Arrrrrgh!!!!
I think the issue must be the radio. Can I flash a new radio if im S-On and bootloader unlocked? Im ok with fastboot stuff if I need that to push a radio, but, I read that flashing a radio is inherently more "dangerous" than flashing the recovery etc.
I hoped the EXT4 recovery would make a difference, but seems not to have at all. FWIW, I also did the GPS antenna mod yesterday, and it hasnt helped either. My gps appears to work, but its very poor. I left it outside for 10 mins last night looking up at clear sky and it didnt show one satellite.
Think it might be time to sell the phone

You need to be S-Off to flash a radio.

I still cant get my head around why I cant get PacMan back on ok? It worked a treat first time, except for gps. Now, it will not install properly at all. It boots ok, but straight away I get keyboard has stopped working, and it doesnt go through the account setup etc.
But the potentiometer works!!!!!

Where I am at now.
Put CWM recovery back on, and tried Cyanogen 7.1. Would not boot. Several attempts at wipe and reflash did not cure this. So I am now running Android Revolution HD7.3. I thought as it was close to a stock ROM it may work, but, still no joy.
I put other halfs Desire HD next to mine and started the GPS on them both. Hers locked in less than a minute. Half an hour later, I had seen one brief flicker of two satellites on mine, Still no fix.
So, I dont know what to do really. I ish I could put the phone back to how it was, but doesnt look like that is going to be an option. Tried the RUU, but it doesnt work
I still cannot understand why none of these roms will work with the GPS when it was perfect before on stock 2.3.5??

What's wrong with the RUU? I would try flashing a fresh recovery image from fastboot, then wiping everything under the sun and flashing ARHD again.

ok, i just got a captivate glide from my gf, ive been looking into flashing and rooting for about 3 months, but i JUST got an android (ik so behind) but originally i was looking into sidekick 4g for keyboard but this worked too in my eyes and it was free so i figured why not, but either way i wanted to root and flash, but now im at a barricade that im not sure if to continue or not, i rooted using one of the threads directions

i ran into a barricade here at first, the initial set up wouldnt run, i fixed that by doing the Vol. Down plus Power recovery mode i think its called, and clearing memory then rebooting and it worked fine, i was rooted and had the super user app as well (some boxes from widgets were invosible like accuweather and the android assistant thing but, thats ok).
ok next step i knew if i was supposed to try to flash a rom i should back up EFS which i did with some difficulty (such as figuring out i needed busybox lol)
ok now my next step was installing ROM manager by clockworkmods
NOW onto the actual part i need help with that i couldnt figure out myself (and excuse me for being newbish here too as i dont know much but im not bad with tech either but i felt i damn near bricked the phone in the process already so i WANT to continue with guidance before i do anything else)
now that im rooted, now that everythings backed up on my computer and ive got rommanager and everything

will i still be rooted once i flash a rom? will i still have busy box, super user, all of that stuff? (as the thread i rooted with clearly said that was flashing a rooted rom)
and theres some other personalization questions i need help with too but thats more towards once ik what direction im going in
and uh.. not sure if it matters but im on metropcs service, so occasionally i get issues if i have to reset the phone at all as i have to change the ANP or ADP cant remember the acronym but ive got to change it from some t-mobile one to the metropcs one, i dont see why that would matter but, its a just in case emasure, also im using the ATT one not rodgers (not even sure what rodgers is tbh)
EDIT: OH one last thing. the rooted rom is gingerbread.. thats my main reason for wanting to change it.. i want kitkat, or would prefer kitkat, but id like some opinions as well on what perhaps the best ROM would be, im not sure between omni-rom and cyanogynmod which are the main ones im looking into, but, again, get more into that later

now im looking through the Rom info.. and.. im starting to wonder.. is it even worth it?
what sacrifices am i going to be making if i flash a custom? what all can i change without flashing a custom? and can i still get kitkat without screwing up my root (KIES?? or ODIN??) its just the things like this that make me wonder... i want the root, that much i DO know, theres so much i can do with rooting im seeing this and enjoying this, but i just need some type of guidance as to what to do, and if theres a better place for this thread please feel free to move it as i do see that it might be ok to have under general ndroid questions, but, i wasnt all too sure on it as this isthe phone im using so any issues deriving from the phone type might screw someone up

Most of the custom roms are rooted already.
There is only 4.0 official, no kitkat. We dont have odin custom images, nor KIES. You must wipe your data, system, boot parition, install KK means clean phone for you.
I think KK is better then official, but it has some limitation.

ok.. im confused then, cause i had kitkat on it when i used kies to update firmware, or atleast i thought i did, perhaps because both had 4 and i was sleepy i was confused lol, and sorry but if KK doesnt mean KitKat then what does it mean. and how high will a custom Rom take me in terms of lining up with official, just to ice cream sandwich?. and.. cyanogenmod, ive been tempted to get it but.. im not sure exactly which one to get because when i was on the site i only found captivate in the devices not captivate glide
EDIT: one more thing, as far as wiping the phone clean and starting over, what do i use.
and of course if you say the rest are rooted, then whats one of the best kernels and roms to use then, its true i want atleast ICS on here, so.. if im right i looked up KK, do you mean KKlauncher the app?

ok i soft bricked my phone, it just shut down in middle of installing some fonts, and for some reason i cant restore it even tho i created a back up as it advised me to do so, i get errors in CWM recovery,
now im about to just do this
using this as a sort of reference so people can keep track of me if something else happens that i mess up..

I mean KK is kitkat. I dont know what did you read, but there is ICS the last official.
Cyanogenmod and other custom roms has own official support, that what you can download rom their site. We dont have official support from them, you cant download those roms from there. You can found download link in rom's threads.

hell i got it back on default ICS now lol, i screwed it up XD and yea ik you guys dont have the downloads your selves but the links and guidance of what i should be doing is basically what i was after ill look at the link you gave me, i think im going to chill out with the flashing right this second, but ill pick it back up later im sure, i atleast liked the cpu setting apps. made my battery last much longer and for what time it lasted i loved it

ok another thing im concerned with is alot have bugs that are deal breakers for me, such as messing up the keyboard (the whole reason i have this phone)
and looking through it i do like CM11 too

can you explain what you mean by the fixed rotation and skype issues,
and perhaps is there a full feature list somewhere? thats one big thing i want to look at if possible, i usually just keep seeing bug fixes on any ROM

Voip apps (skype,vibert etc) have strange sound, only temporaly fix exists.
When you take a picture with camera, it has fix rotation, I dont remember witch position is the fixed one, but you make photos with different rotation, the picture will be rotate 90/180/270, and you must fix the image.
Most importan bug are: phone call sound doesnt work with BT devices, and voip sound is buggy.
