I have the i9192 model and was wondering if some of the features that are different from the other S4 mini models are present in the hardware but missing due to software.
For example NFC.
Can some of these be hidden to be turned on later officially or unofficially with software modifications?

Concerning NFC there's no NFC antenna so I guess you can forget (I don't really understand NFC is usefull for but anyway)
4G will not happen in case because of the hardware also and except things like smart rotation or other feature in the galaxy s4 (full software) I don't really see any thing they would have hide.
What they did in fact is hidding the knox capabilities and it avoid warranty when you want to do anything else than upgrading to new version .
I thought that the NFC antenna is normally in the battery.
I though it was in the back cover I guess it depend of the version.
And it seems to be written on the battery when oinside the batterie.
And it does not look to be one :/
Anyway what's NFC usefull for ?
Bump transfers, quick payments, easy contact transfers.

Well my question was what NFC usefull for, now you phrase it, it does sound like (in my hears) as completly useless
But I guess there is still some fun features to use with that.

i was wondering, since the launch of the official ics for our sony arcs is only around the corner, would there be a way to include the Google beam function into our phones,
Ive read that there is nfc adapters but i don't know if they would work for our devices or of any additional apps may be needed for then to function
http://thesmartsense.com/15701
would be sweet if we could make use of this function
any ideas, im a bit of a noob
I read that there is coming MicroSD cards with NFC... so if the software at some point wil support that, it is possible...
I don't see what's the point of nfc if it's not secure 100%, I saw a tv report about cyber robbery, which someone can steal ur credit card info with a small device hidden in a woman's hand bag or maybe jeans pocket.

That would be great news. Although NFC is still kinda of a gimmick right now, i can see it more widespread. Doesn't Visa Paywave also work with NFC?
I'm still kinda reluctant to use it though, looking at the security issues.
That's good news. I hope to see new sd cards soon, or another way to use nfc with arc
Hi all. Finally i had the chance to try out the android beam more precisely the nfc chip in the Galaxy Nexus. You can send contacts, web pages etc. Check out my video on the following link! Feel free to ask any questions or any other suggestions even new ways to use the nfc. http://samsungmobilers.ro/post.php?id=289
thanks...didn't real know about this feature....when I went there I saw that it was on...I do not remember turning it on....maybe it uses some battery with it on and we didn't even know??? I turned it off.. I guess if it was using battery...it would have shown up in the battery stats...
thanks for this!
If you want to have fun with NFC, search Market for NFC, download few apps and try to read any ID card you might have. I can ready my Bus Ticket
You can also get Tags and program them yourself. Like THESE
.
yep... unfortunately in Romania it's really hard to find a nfc id card . Hope that in the near future we'll have more opportunities to use this cool feature even to make payments

Modern (biometric) passports have NFC in them. Even in Romania
I haven't got a modern one )
I can confirm that Beam works only with android devices! I've tried sending stuff to a Nokia c7 (vice-versa) which also has a NFC chip. They see each other but I guess that the due the the different OS they''re incompatible! Gonna try with a BB 9000 touch during the weekend!
Beam works with GNex and NexusS, but too bad you can't send files with it, but then i guess it would be too slow
well i don't know for sure, nokia c7 has the option to send pics and music via NFC!
Using file expert you can send anything you want including apk or other files

thx for the info!
I was wondering if you can put in NFC into your phone like open it up and install the chip or whatever. Or like be able to plug it on to your phone thru the charger port. I also heard that SD-cards that can connect to wifi can that apply with NFC. if my question is stupid and ignorant feel free to say so. I dont want to impose or be a stupid noob.
Thank you.
I have a Inspire 4g (rooted)
P.s I think this is the wrong thread, I AM SOOOOO SORRY IF IT IS.
I dont usually post stuff.

No, you can't. There are some memory cards with integrated NFC, but they're very low storage capacity (1 or 2GB).

There are also NFC SIM cards... But I don't think they are commercially available. Yet.
IT will be possible..
I think they have magnets abouts the size of a credit card or smaller that will stick to the back of your phone.
I havent had a device with NFC yet, but it may be a must-have for my next device.
you wont be able to install it via the micro usb or via the microchip on the pcb but the memory cards have a look here http://www.moneto.me/faq

I think that UK is going to accelerate the implantation on the occasion of the Olympics.
Surely, a requirement for my next device will be leading NFC.
Hardware issue , i dont think this possible.

Yep, Barclays did that !

Just have to wait for other banks to jump in Barclays footsteps
Then, no need for Phone with embedded NFC, or SIM with NFC, ... !

This is a cool feature but as a must-have for a phone? I don't know...
NFC is Near Field Communication right?
Thought it could be used for bluetooth alternative also.
(like phone to phone etc....)
Would love to have, but Desire S doesnt have it.
just wondering, whats the good side of NFC? i only see that as a battery drainer..
Even if you managed to add an NFC radio to your phone, you won't get it to work with google wallet due to the lack of a so called "secure element" which secures the transactions.
http://translate.google.com/transla...overca-presenta-in-italia-la-sua-sim-nfc-347/
They're going to implement that into SIM cards, many (most?) phones have one. Don't know about Google compatibility though, they talk about Mastercard standards.
After reading about NFC sim cards a few months ago I asked T mobile(UK) if they are going to be getting NFC sim cards any time soon, and the guy behind the till looked at me as if I was on crack
IMHO, the best implementation for this on a phone that does not have NFC pre-installed would be from the battery. It requires a hard connection to the circuitry to be powered...the easiest way to do that would be with an nfc-capable battery. The only pitfalls to this would be expensive replacements, slightly decreased battery life and possibly 1-2mm extra thickness to the battery itself. I think a ton of people would gladly take those small caveats to have NFC on a phone that shouldn't.

tjhe battery shopuld be the problem.. but after looking at this >> http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4576&idPhone2=4695
the question is, why nokia use same battery for a non nfc phone and a nfc phone.. (ps:NFC chip weight is at 3.5 Gram?)

so i think that the third party companies should work on this for say like extended batteries... and provide a market link or add a market app that would give the nfc chip in the battery to work as an example or a dev do so to make the google wallet to think it is a valid phone with use and nfc chip...

You can't use Google Wallet with phones that don't have it built in period. There's more than the NFC. There's a chip called a Secure Element that's separate and stores all of the information for cards, etc. The phone either comes with it or it doesn't.
Also for phones with batteries that have an NFC chip in them, that's just an antenna for the chip inside the phone. It does nothing in a non-NFC phone.

Is it possible to use my phone as a key fob for my apartment complex? Or say my workplace?
I saw the big confirmed NFC list elsewhere, but was curious of anyone has tried or knows about this.
Thanks

This has been talked about before, no you cant, its not using the same technology. The easiest way to check this is to get the NFC reader for your phone and try to read whatever your trying to use, like a security card for the building, it will not read it and this will tell you its not the same. I had the same idea as at work I have a Prox II card to get in and around the building, tried to read it and it would not work, I checked the web and sure enough its not the same frequency or something along those lines. At this time its only good for paying at places that have the ability and messing with your own tags.
Where is the actual NFC device? Is it in the Battery?
Im curious if it's upgradable (aftermarket, of course) to add on more frequencies

For the S3 it is in the battery as you say. So an aftermarket battery will likely not have the NFC functionality in there that you would like.

Unless it specifies that it has a NFC chip in it. I know some do.

hello,
i searched (using the search function AND scrolling trough posts) about NFC issues. i couldn't find a thread so here it is!
i JUST BOUGHT an unlocked / international version of Z2 Play - 4Gb and 64Gb version.
the users manual states: Note: NFC is not available in all areas or on all models.
i tried to use NFC with...
- tags
- another phone
it does not recognize any of them.
the phone is updated to the latest security patches (in europe).
before i send the phone back to the seller (i can do that) i would like to know if it is a well known issue or my phone has a problem.
i tried using tags and other phone connection WITH and WITHOUT the back-cover mounted on the device.
my back-cover has only ONE metallic contact.
so please provide help in order for me to decide if i am going to return the product.
NOTE: i am a LG user and this is my first venture into Moto devices.

I got the same Problem Bro. Nothing interacts with my NFC - I read it's on the top of the phone... behind the camera or the flash. But with knowing this nothing changed.
It's really annoying cause I'm in Australia on Vacation and want to pay with my phone and paypal at the shops, because the currency is good right now.
So, the notch... The mark above the earpiece is the sensor. It works.

This is really a strange Location! Mine works too... haha
thanks for figuring out.
Strange location indeed. I need NFC for car integration, I will place a NFC tag on a car charger. But my car charger is not as tall as the device.
So I intend to return it.
I like the Amoled... I like the feel of the phone (even if my 4 years old LG G3 is smoother - on a 7.1 custom ROM)... But unfortunately this one does not meet my day-to-day usage requirements.
I made my first payment using this device.
It turns out that having the NFC sensor on that spot is perfect for making payments. You don't have to manoeuvre the phone in strange positions according to the position of the place of payment. So... Nice job!
