[Q]NFC App's

Hi there,
Is there any NFC Apps that i can make use of the NFC hardware, i downloaded a few apps from the play store, but it seems like all they do is read the tags. How about replacing my contactless credit card that my phone can read to use my phone as the card?
Any idas guys

Only people I know that are doing it right now are Orange together with Barclays. The One X isn't supported however as you need their special app which isn't loaded on the phone and doesn't appear on the market.

Apart from Orange+Barclays, nobody else seems to be doing it. There are plans for a joint NFC wallet system from Orange + Voda + O2 but nothing has happened yet.

If you want to go a stage further you can combine this with tasker.

NFC Task Launcher seems a great idea.
But if you use tags in public places (say to automatically connect to a secured customer only network at a coffee shop), I can think of numerous potential security issues.

At the moment the only use for NFC tags for this phone is for your own purposes. So you could stick one near your bed...and in your car and things like that to automate daily tasks.
I am sure in the future you will be able to use it to pay in places like Starbucks or McDonalds, but its not quite there yet.
I think there are also plans to embed NFC tags in posters in train stations etc so you can wave your phone at it, and get some publicity on your phone.
I had some Xperia S tags so I tested the One X with them just to make sure NFC was working.

Here is some more info about reading and writing NFC tags. The purposes are endless. So much cool things you can do!

Has anyone tried to assign a Tasker Task to an NFC using NFC Task Launcher ?

wait, Google Wallet won't work? i was ordering this next week with the assumption i could use Wallet and pay for gas somewhere.

O2 wallet will go live in the next couple of weeks. We've been testing it around the offices for months now and all is working perfectly. Some lucky customers got to try it early too

Are you talking about the NFC-enabled O2 Wallet? If not, O2 Wallet has been available on the Android market for three weeks now

That's interesting. If it's working so well, I don't understand why they didn't just release it with NFC. Now I've been left with a negative view of the application, as well as many other people (check all the reviews on the Play Store). As it is, the application doesn't realistically provide better options than Pingit. Launching with NFC would've made O2 the first company to officially enable NFC payments on a Android phone in the UK, but now that's not so sure.
Speaking of which, are you using the HTC One X to test it? Or the Galaxy Nexus? Also, I'm curious about if O2 are using the embedded secure element or the UICC. Did you have to get a new SIM card for NFC payments to work?
Just to confirm, have you tried paying for items outside of your office, in McDonald's or Greggs for example?

Actually, the future is almost here. Google Wallet works like a charm outside the office/house
Not only that I paid a McDonalds menu & a pack of cigarettes, but I also did it in Romania, a European underdeveloped country
Head over Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S forums for more "success stories" regarding GW and NFC payments.

Yes, we're aware of that - I've used Google Wallet many times myself. There's no equivalent service in the UK; we were talking about the O2 Wallet.

1) Put a tag in the car mount, match with Tasker to enable Bluetooth for handsfree and disable WiFi without draining battery via location sensing...

2) Sew a tag in your jacket pocket. When no tag has been in contact for 10mins consider it stolen and enable Prey

Wallet
Google Wallet is great and with a rooted phone you can definitely use it on almost any device. I have the CDMA (Verizon) Galaxy Nexus and it works just fine. Anywhere they have the quickpass mastercard scanner thing. You see it as a little pad on top of the credit card reader. Anywhere you can scan you credit card without swiping you can use wallet.
You get $10 free from google for using it, the only problem is unless you have a certain mastercard, you have to load up money to a google gift card from another source ahead of time to use wallet.
It's not that big a deal since you can do it from your phone. It has a pin for protection to keep you secure, in case someone scummy enough to steal a phone has the mental capacity to know what google wallet is.
Has anyone used it with the screen off or while the app is closed? I have only used a few times and both times I'd already typed my pin. If you do it with the phone screen on but haven't opened wallet, it asks for pin right?
It's scary the first time you use it, I almost didn't believe it would work, but it DID!

NFC on Non NFC phone

I was wondering if you can put in NFC into your phone like open it up and install the chip or whatever. Or like be able to plug it on to your phone thru the charger port. I also heard that SD-cards that can connect to wifi can that apply with NFC. if my question is stupid and ignorant feel free to say so. I dont want to impose or be a stupid noob.

No, you can't. There are some memory cards with integrated NFC, but they're very low storage capacity (1 or 2GB).

There are also NFC SIM cards... But I don't think they are commercially available. Yet.

IT will be possible..

I think they have magnets abouts the size of a credit card or smaller that will stick to the back of your phone.
I havent had a device with NFC yet, but it may be a must-have for my next device.

I think that UK is going to accelerate the implantation on the occasion of the Olympics.
Surely, a requirement for my next device will be leading NFC.

Hardware issue , i dont think this possible.

Starbucks does and so do a number of Mastercard chip and pin machines just there is no payment app available in the uk yet. It was ment to be out for the Olympics but read that it was delayed

Even if you managed to add an NFC radio to your phone, you won't get it to work with google wallet due to the lack of a so called "secure element" which secures the transactions.

They're going to implement that into SIM cards, many (most?) phones have one. Don't know about Google compatibility though, they talk about Mastercard standards.

After reading about NFC sim cards a few months ago I asked T mobile(UK) if they are going to be getting NFC sim cards any time soon, and the guy behind the till looked at me as if I was on crack

IMHO, the best implementation for this on a phone that does not have NFC pre-installed would be from the battery. It requires a hard connection to the circuitry to be powered...the easiest way to do that would be with an nfc-capable battery. The only pitfalls to this would be expensive replacements, slightly decreased battery life and possibly 1-2mm extra thickness to the battery itself. I think a ton of people would gladly take those small caveats to have NFC on a phone that shouldn't.

the question is, why nokia use same battery for a non nfc phone and a nfc phone.. (ps:NFC chip weight is at 3.5 Gram?)

so i think that the third party companies should work on this for say like extended batteries... and provide a market link or add a market app that would give the nfc chip in the battery to work as an example or a dev do so to make the google wallet to think it is a valid phone with use and nfc chip...

You can't use Google Wallet with phones that don't have it built in period. There's more than the NFC. There's a chip called a Secure Element that's separate and stores all of the information for cards, etc. The phone either comes with it or it doesn't.
Also for phones with batteries that have an NFC chip in them, that's just an antenna for the chip inside the phone. It does nothing in a non-NFC phone.

How to Check if NFC works?

Hey guys, I bought these batteries (a set of 3) and an external charger to charge them from eBay for about 12 bucks from somewhere in Asia. I assumed they were generic ones, but as I got them today they were branded as Samsung and says it's NFC capable. It looks exactly like the stock battery that came with the GNex. Anyways, I'm probably 95% certain that it's just a generic battery that the company slapped a Samsung sticker on it to make it look more legit. Either way I was wondering how to check if NFC does work, I don't have another GNex to test it on. Is there an app that you guys know of that checks if NFC works?
Any response would be appreciated, thanks!

I don't know of an app that checks if NFC works. Afaik you will have to find another phone with NFC or go to a PayPass location.

Try scanning your passport that have a bio-metric chip, if there is a sound, then NFC is working.
This is if your passport's bio-metric chip can be picked up by NFC scanners.

I have one of these cards. When I hold it against my GNex, the phone makes a sound. I'd imagine this is the NFC at work. Have you got a similar card that you could try?

if you have a card or a tag that uses NFC download NXP NFC scanner from the play store....it scans any NFC tags

If you have a tablet or another phone with NFC, turn both on and tap them together (the backs). you should hear a sound.

NFC tags for the S3

So which NFC tags have you purchased that work well?

I bought a 5-pack of the Samsung TecTiles and they work great. They allow for 1K storage which is good if you plan on putting a lot of data or things on them.

Purchased some from tag stand a while back, they come in different sizes and they work fine with the s3

Is it just me or are the official TecTiles almost worthless?
Is seems they can each only do 1 single function and the phone needs to be unlocked to activate them.
For instance, say I have the TT programmed to connect to a specific WiFi network. This only works if WiFi is turned on and the phone isn't already locked. You can't have it:
a) Turn on WiFi first
b) Connect to a specific network.
Instead, you have to unlock phone, and turn on WiFi manually. Makes it kind of pointless to just TAP and be done with it.
Maybe its just the Samsung app, it's extremely limited. Are there better apps?

I got the tiles from Samsung. I'm going to use them for putting my phone into silent when I put my phone on my nightstand. I think that going with Samsung's official ones are the best.

Haven't looked too much into what can be done with tags. But, could I for instance set one up to turn on my bluetooth and pair it with my car when I get into my car? And also unpair and turn off bluetooth when I get out?

I'm not so sure about that. I've heard some of the aftermarket ones work just fine.

Wow, I had no clue an nfc chip could do that. So stick one in your car and program it to do certain things! That is great. I need to get some of these.

zoom (2-finger gesture) only works if you touch the case

Hello,
Greetings from Germany.
I have the following problem with the XA2. The 2-finger gesture (for example, to zoom on a map) only works if you touch the case somewhere.
If the smartphone is lying on the bed or table, multitouch will not be detected in 90% of the cases.
This is particularly annoying if you have the smartphone in the car in the holder and wants to zoom in the Navigationsapp.
If I touch the outside of the smartphone it will work again.
I have loaded the multitouch test app from the app store and these tests confirm the finding.
Does anyone else have the problem too?

Fortunately it's still better than it was with XA1, where there were problems with non-responsive at all touch areas.
Actually it's not that big deal for me, as I'm not using the phone as car navigation usually (I have other device for this).
But yes, it might be inconvenient if you try to single-hand operate the phone while it's just on the table.

At least I do not want to be satisfied with that error. It costs too much for that. In the German forum someone has his xa2 for repair at Sony. I do not believe that they can handle it but if so I'll fix mine and keep it. otherwise I will buy the XZ1 which cost no more than the XA2 today and had some better specs. In the hope that there is no such problem.

someone from the German forum exchanges his device, in the hope that a new device does not have this error. You would then also see if it is a general error that affects all devices or if there are only problems in the error-free production.
