I have decided that I would like an android tablet. I was waiting a long time for a new Nexus 10, but that has yet to materialize.
The main reason I have become interested in the Note 10.1 2014 is for its S-pen support for note taking. My primary concern with the tablet is lack of a development community. I own an HTC One currently and there is no shortage of developers.
Would you all recommend this tablet or should I go with another tablet?
Thanks!
This is by far the best tablet I hare ever used. I actually hate tablets but this one is so amazing for my current Uses that it is actually better than a Laptop (for me)
The development community is small Now but remember the vote 3 came out at the same time and the nexus 7 is here. Plus the high cost. We did just get scrosler (Clean Rom) and he is getting the Note 2014 soon. I love the touch wiz features and really just want a few streamlined and optimised roms and a bit of themeing. Anyone demanding AOSP or CM on this device is throwing away 75% of the reasons to get it LOL. IT's fast Powerful fun and incredibly useful, you'll love it.

I own ipad air and this tablet, without been rooted this tabled is very very slow and lagy compared to Air, just not the seam league.
But after disabled all samsung software it gain noticeable speed leap and in productivity way it is out shine Air.
I think the only thing keeping me from switching from my Windows tablet is the lack of support for connecting to ntsf external hard drives. Otherwise this tablet looks like a beast!

Think very very slow and laggy is a bit over the top, before I rooted it wasn't as quick but could never say it was way off the ipad air

Thanks! So do you really think this would work with, for example, a Seagate 750gb external hard drive? I know the problem I had when I had a Nexus 7 (2012 Edition) is that it would initially power it on, but I couldn't see any of the files using the Stickmount app.

Yes it does work, but even a portable hard drive will need an external power source as the Note's micro USB (or probably any other tablet) will not output enough power to drive an external mechanical hard drive. USB drives all seem to work OK, I've not yet tried an SSD yet. Paragon NTFS works very well though, I would guess most of the negative feedback on the PlayStore if from those who don't understand there's not sufficient power going to the drive. Just because the power LED lights up doesn't mean that there's enough power to drive the disk mechanics.

Ok that makes sense. Hmmm.....I think the big problem then would be to find a power source. My external only has the one USB port.

Yes. You need external power (although, I have a 250GB drive from a 13" MacBook Pro which works with no external power) and you need .... root.
Ok thanks guys. I'll probably look at the Surface Pro 2 instead. I'm normally an Android fan-boy, but I'm looking for a device where I can easily plug in my hard drive and use it. Sounds like the workaround is a little too much here.
Has the performance improved since release? I have been seeing some people claiming that subsequent updates have improved lag.
Can anyone comment on the lag after updates?

There are some odd lags here and there. I am running clean ROM, fully de-bloated and there is still keyboard lag on the sammy keyboard and when you re-boot the widgets take forever to load.
That being said I am confident that developers will work out the kinks. The screen is AMAZING. Exynos is just a bit slower than the Qualcomm offering but still plenty fast. There is no other Android tablet I'd buy.

Mine is better after updating from MJ6 to ML1.
However, I think that you would want to be prepared to root this tablet to get the most out of it. I am still getting up the nerve to do it.

I considered that device but it is so expensive by comparison. I expect to use pretty much nothing but wireless solutions with this tablet (in my case, basically all via VPN or internet). Have you considered a wireless hard drive? They have their own inbuilt power. That will make for a pretty slick set-up and I would think you'd prefer it over a cabled hard drive once you'd started using it.
Just a thought.
I have experimented a bit with RDP and android office stuff with this tablet and I think with a good portable keyboard/case/whatever it kicks Windows 8's butt.

So I cracked my Transformer Prime's screen and I think it knocked the camera loose as well. I was wondering what you would do in my situation. I'm leaning towards selling it and the keyboard dock as is for 250 starting bid on eBay and going for a 16gb Nexus 7. Then again the 10.1 Note is around the corner and would be outstanding for class. I also figured the Nexus 7 wouldn't have a terrible resale value if we see the 10.1 Note or perhaps a 10.1 Nexus tablet. I really like Sammy and wouldn't mind switching to their tablet line. Thoughts?

I see nexus 7 as a separate class from regular tablets, its a really cool 200 tablet for fun and games though I doubt I'll ever use it for serious note taking or textbook reading like I do with my iPad. That's why for now I'm keeping my iPad and n7. Though the note looks amazing for note taking so once that comes out I might even sell my iPad for it .
So that's why I say if you can keep a full sized tablet for serious work and just buy n7 for play and light browsing. The n7 is cheap enough that it actually seems feasible to have possibly the note and n7 in your case.

I'm still holding off on the tablets. The nexus 7 almost got me to jump and I think I would have if they had included a sd card slot for more storage. I'm not a big cloud person for media I have on a hard drive and with storage prices what they are its a stupid decision.
As a transformer user I would say check out the tf300t or the infinity tf700 since u are already familiar with Asus. I would switch to a galaxy tab if they had a foldable keyboard doc exactly like Asus. But the keyboard is the main selling point for me.

That's my one major issue. Granted i only add a few games and essential apps as well as tons of books. All my music is on Google music and I'm rarely without internet. Idk seems like Google is really pushing to do away with expandable storage.

Yeah, I think I may keep with the transformer line. I just have to generate some cash. My problem with the Prime was GPS (not a major concern), really weak WiFi, and terrible (really bad) disk I/O speeds. I know the tf300 and tf700 fixed the WiFi and GPS.. but I really don't want to suffer with such bad read/write speeds. The whole system locked up when I install an app. Even with custom kernels to try and fix the issue.

I can personally vouch for the tf300. No WiFi or GPS issues. Its been working great so far. But keep in mind that the 300 is the value model that gets u the best bang for your buck. Its not a high end model like the tf700 is supposed to be. My only major complaint about the 300 is that asus provides an app that unlocks the boot loader for u so u can flash custom ROMs. The downside is that the app sends your serial no. to asus and then permanently voids your warranty. So far all efforts to defeat this has failed because the process is ridiculously complex and encrypted. You can root without voiding your warranty though.

Seems to be fine to me. No noticeable I/o issues. The 300 does have the new quad core tegra 3 processor and upgraded ram type. So it can certainly perform better than the prime.

Ok, so after I got this phone on launch I enjoyed using it alot, everything was good but since it was the international version and I have t mobile my data speeds were too slow. Than the T Mobile version came out and I sold the international version and got this one.
Now this is a perfect phone for me. But since its so powerful and get almost all the things I need done on daily basis with ease, my question is, if I get rid of mt tab and laptop and just do all things on this device you think it will burn out. Will it be able to hold strong for a good year?
I do alot of emails, video watching, skyping, gaming, right now I have been doing all those things off this phone and havent touched my tab or laptop.
How heavy you guys been using this?

Due to my situation I did exactly that with my Droid X. My Droid X lasted the fully 2 years and more using it as my main and mostly only computer. My Droid X is still going strong. So I believe that Galaxy Note 2 can do the same. But with all computers they will show age sooner or later.
But yes, I believe Galaxy Note 2 can last as a main computing device for a year or two.
Titanium Backup shows 770 apps in my Galaxy Note 2 . I use it daily for most computing usage. The only thing I need is Microsoft Office (Word) for customized text boxes that I use sometimes within documents. And without a physical keyboard, word processing can be a pain. So laptop or a tablet with optional physical keyboard can come in handy with that. But otherwise Galaxy Note 2 is a nice daily computer device. Still a laptop or a tablet with optional physical keyboard can sometimes come in handy.
You can also turn your Galaxy Note 2 into a desktop type computer too. Adding wireless mouse/keyboard, large monitor, etc. Shows how far these PPC (Pocket Personal Computer) devices and Android OS have come. But still as room to grow.

I have been using it non stop so I could understand but it's always a good idea to keep your laptop imho.
It will definitely last a year without any problems. The only thing that seems to go after about a year or so is the battery so eventually you will need to get that replaced. Other than that it should be fine. But a backup device is always a good idea!
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Yes, the battery will go. But you can replace the battery with no problem.
Thanks for the response guys. So I guess what I will do is buy a smart dock, sell my laptop and desktop n keep my monitor keyboard and mouse for smart dock, and make N2 my main computing device.
I'll keep my N7 for just incase moments. this will be fun, i love this phone.

My firends, I'm thinking that I really need a tablet to complement my SGN2. I don't want to close any option before I hear from you. I'm an advance user, and I'm looking for something that really gives me more that my sgn2. I used to have an iPad I sold it because only my children were using it to play around, but since the anounncement that office 365 was out in USA, I'm thinking to get me an iPad mini. Another choice might be an w8 tablet, since I want it only to get my job done (lots of reports and presentation, microsoft dominates my working environment). I was thinking also to let go my SGN2, get an HTC one and buy a note 10'. What do you think?? Please help me out here.

I have been wondering same thing, as I don't want smaller than 10" tablet with my 5,5" phone, also I've been thinking about W8, because would it be slightly stupid to have android tablet with Note 2?
Can't you do everything as with android tablet with your Note 2?

The thing that Ireally would love to do but I can't are working with powerpoint presentation and advance spread sheets from excell. That's a very down side for android OS. I also work with mindmaps but is very hard to do it right on my sgn2.

I would honestly go with the iPad, despite what "some" people might say.
You already have an Android phone so you can get best of both worlds if you get an iPad. Similarily, it is hard arguing against the fact that iOS has a slightly better standard of apps than Android and is streets ahead on WP8 (which i actually quite like). Also, more apps are designed specifically for the tablet and you will get the benefits of this.
Therefore, despite how good something like the Nexus 7 and 10 may be, I would definately be more inclined to get an iPad if I ever decided to venture into the tablet world.
Yeah, I see your point. I was thinking w8, but I don't know if it is up to the challenge, and also creating a new account and buy all the software that I need again it just doesn't seems right

From my experience I like having Android tablets (a Galaxy 10.1 and an Asus EeeTab) to compliment my Android phone- lots of nice sync-ing between the two from factors is good to have. I also have a w8 RT tablet that gives me all the sync-ing between my PC's (both business and personal). I do have some cross-sync between my Androids and my w8 worlds with Lync and office using sky drive.
I've made a personal choice not to have any Apple in my tech Universe... I simply don't find it very appealing... Same goes for a windows based phone. But anyway, that's the spread that works for my wordl... both all Android and windows 8 based tech.
Cheers

I found it works fairly well, given of course the smaller screen size. I have the touch (the one with the raised keys) keypad that I can type really well with, plus having a full usb port I can attach a real mouse. Of course the big thing for me will be when windows blue comes to the RT tablet- this is promised to give full outlook. The native mail app is ok, but it's not outlook. Windows blue is due out in the next few months, so this should make my w8 tablet even better. As far as the other office apps, these are like the PC versions and come pre-installed on the RT. Of course, with office 365, web office apps are a possibility as long as you are connected.
Then there is the windows 8 pro tablet that is available now... this is full pc... not really sure it's worth the extra $$$ since the rt does what I like... super mobile, long battery life, inter-connected with the work life, etc. Until Office comes out for Android, I don't know that I can fully switch to the Android platform for my entire mobile life.

One must always consider the possibilities... and indeed RDP into a remote PC... yes doable... then there's those Office Web Apps... but like lauchon... I was thinking about a single smaller than a PC larger than a cell phone device.... and the thought of carry all of that to my Starbucks - I hate lugging the laptop about... so a tablet is my ideal device foot-print. and the Surface tablets fit the bill for me... the touch pad is light and has a mouse area built-in... so a single device can be done... when you don't need the full keyboard and mouse.... like in the bed... you have the touch screen...

I Always felt that tablets were useless, but i needed an office compatible device and I decided to go with the Acer iconia w7 .
It has changed my life. Great battery life (up to 6/7 hrs At minimum brightness) good performance (i have the i3 versione) and really awesome full hd display.
It also has Windows 8 pro, so I have a real pc in a really small form factor.
I bought mine for 450 euros, ir was used for one month and actually i was Lucky since it was like new

I don't know if you made your mind already. But I must advise you to buy the iPad mini (32gb with cellular).
I played with lots of tablets in my work and I'm telling you, no tablet came near to the qualities of iPad mini.
It's perfect for writing with both hands, very fast, has beautiful screen.
I wanted to buy an android tablet, but when I played with iPad mini, I changed my mind
I compliment mine with a Note 8.0, I do use it for mind mapping but not for spread sheets so I can't comment in those

I love, love, love mine! Both the 16gb Wi-Fi and the LTE model I just bought. (Dad will get the Wi-Fi model now that i have the LTE version.) Both are stock unrooted with no chrome beta app installed. And zero issues on either one. The WiFi model had a GPS issue which has been fixed with a software update and it has been very solid since. I have had no freezes or reboots (except once when I plugged in a micro SD card reader device, probably related to the Nexus media importer app.) I haven't seen the multi touch issue, not sure exactly how that shows up. It could be that my usage is different. I suggest you buy it from a vendor that allows you to return or exchange it and try it for yourself with no risk.

Both are stock unrooted with no chrome beta app installed.

Another 7" tablet to consider is the Kindle Fire HD 2 which will have better hardware including the Snapdragon 800 CPU.

With the better hardware, hopefully more ROM developers will be on board to take full advantage of it.
I would hold off until Google make another official announcement about either of the touch/sound issue.
However, It is a great tablet, way snappier than any of the Samsung tabs in my opinion.
Also the other plus side is the new KitKat update for Android that Google is unveiling around Oct. probably will be pushed out to Nexus devices shortly after.

I have no problems with my touch or sound or GPS. My tablet is perfect. Only had it for about 2 weeks not but so far so good. Absolutely LOVE it. I sold my Galaxy Note 8.0 to buy this and i dont regret it one bit.I miss not having a MicroSD slot but that is going to be fixed by buying a Seagate 1tb wireless hard drive.
Same here, no problems at all :victory:
(32GB Wifi version)
.
I have it since Friday and I just love it. Over the weekend I've been using it very extensively and have found no issues at all. It's fast, smooth, the screen is great (so much so that I'm looking at my various other displays quite differently now - everything seems blocky and pixelated).
If you're in for a small tablet, it's hard getting around this one.
The LG G Pad 8.3 looks interesting too, but I much prefer having a device that will be updated with new Android versions for the coming years.
very happy with the new nexus 7
got it since 1 week, and traveled already 1/3 around the world.
I just found a little hiss sound on top speaker at low volume. i didn't not notice it before.
everything is much better than the previous nexus 7.
yay, a lot of positive feedback hope there will be good customroms hopefully psx will be available as stable. already using it on my maguro
My first one had a speaker issue. Replaced and current one has no issues at all besides what i considered "low volume" from the speakers. I have since fixed that via Faux Sound.
32gb owner here, love it. Does everything very well. Fast, fluid, no touch issues, running PA and runs like a charm. Using it on a daily basis. Love customising it as with any android products.

We will see on how it compares.
After 3 weeks of use I love this thing. Working out as GPS really well too. Love it~
Love my 32GB Wifi (I share my phone as a hotspot and work pays for data so I wasn't going to get a LTE version, especially as my phone connects via LTE).
The first difference was to be noticed was the screen. The colour and sharpness are truly outstanding, you don't even need to have the two next to each other to appreciate it. Also apps and settings load faster and close faster as well as opening the task browser, no doubt the extra memory and CPU grunt at play. The sound from the speakers is a lot better, clearer and louder and stereo is noticeable but to avoid covering the speakers I either pinch the top or bottom in the middle or cup my hand around the speakers. I used to hold the end that did not have speakers but now that there is speakers at either end that you don't want to block with your hand so I would recommend holding one is store to make sure you can be comfortable with it and not block the speakers.
When I first got it I downloaded the latest TWRP Recovery mode (2.6.2), when coupled with the latest 4.3 update from Google with the latest patches built in the OS would not boot, it would stay at the coloured X loading screen permanently. I used an earlier versions of TWRP (2.6.0) with the same OS and it was fine- it may have been something I did and not the same for everyone but if anyone has the same issue try using the earlier version. Once this was complete and the device rooted I have not had a single problem.
The screen resolution truly is something to behold- HD movies look great as do games, especially cartoon style graphics, due to the brilliant colour reproduction. Even books and webpages with smooth letters, no jaggies, look fantastic. The rear camera, should I ever use it takes pictures that are not quite as good as with HTC One but a heap better the front camera on either device. I can't see myself using it much- maybe to show something while on Skype- but at least it is decent.
I do miss the textured back of the original model, it had some grip but the new one is smooth, a little too smooth, with the only grip coming from the Nexus logo with is indented. Also, the USB plug is still upside-down but the same occurs on the HTC One so at least they are the same.
Lastly, the headphone jack is on the top so if you are charging and have headphones on at the same time you will have cables coming out either end. This bugs me a bit but I’ll get over it.
not bad
If you have the original Nexus 7 you might not see much of a difference. Of course things have improved but in my opinion its pretty minor. I currently have an issue with the heat it puts out when playing certain games but even without this it's not much different than the original one. If you never owned a Nexus 7 then I highly recommend it. For browsing the web, watching youtube videos its the best. I hardly ever open my laptop since buying one.
I have a tab 3 7.0 and need the OTG ability for gaming, I am debating on getting another tablet and getting rid of this one. I am currently looking at either a tab 3 8.0 or nexus 7. The nexus would be a no brainer except for the lack of a sd card slot. I know you can use the cable and hook up a external drive but that would be combersome. So I guess I need to know if there is any possibility of the tab 3 7.0 getting the ability to use OTG or should I look into getting another one.
Also would the Nexus be a better choice or the 8.0 tab. Both are about the same price and comparable they both have their strong points. Larger screen available internal sd card vs better resolution and quicker access to upgrades. I have a GS4 as a phone and like the Samsung.

This isnt the response you were looking for but what does OTG mean. Just got the tab and not really enjoying the preformance with the Iron Man game.
OTG means on the go it is the ability to plug a USB device into the charging port of your phone. Ie a mouse, keyboard, flash drive or in my case a psi or xbox controller.

Thanks for the reply.
From what I can understand, no. Don't take me as the final answer though I am no expert.

Im no expert either, but I had the Asus Nexus 7 32gb before I had my Galaxy Tab 3 8.
I love removable media. 32gb filled up fast with music and movies. It wasn't that huge a deal,
but now that I have the Tab 3 I feel better and roomier...
I had OTG with my Nexus and it was great and worked perfectly. I was not aware I could not do the
same with the Tab 3. Ill look into it. The OTG came in handy once in awhile. Not a deal breaker but nice
to have.
Hands down, the 7" screen of the Nexus isn't even close to the 8" of the Tab 3. I feel like I have
the full use of the screen with the Tab, while the Nexus had bigger borders. Its more enjoyable with the
bigger screen. Seems clearer and more vibrant.
Speed felt the same. I ROM'd both, and they were equal with APKs and mods and such, so honestly neither one
was better than the other in real world use. Im sure benchmarks and quadrant scores might say different
but it all seemed the same to me. Battery life seemed the same too, but since I never drained the battery
entirely in a day, I was always able to easily recharge both when needed.
I had the Nexus 7 for a year, and the Tab 3 for a month now. Both were great, but I feel like I got a nice
worthwhile upgrade with the Tab 3 8.
Just my pennies worth. Hope it helps
EDIT: I know my signature and my devices make it look like Im a Samsung fanboy, but it only turned out that way in the
last few months. Ive had them all, and all different brands over the last few years. If someone makes something better
I have no issue with switching...

Thanks that is what I was looking for. By the way the tab 3 8 does have OTG capabilities they even sell the cable on Samsung website for the 8.
Great. Didn't know that. I'll check out and confirm the otg tonight. Thanks

I can confirm that OTG works on the Tab 3 8.
Im rooted using Fast Dreams ROM with the Galatab kernel.
I used Stickmount 2.3.1 from the Playstore also.
And just got a normal OTG cable from a generic website (it was NOT a Samsung cable).
I didn't do anything else.
Good luck

I can also confirm that the tab 3 8 supports otg out of the box without any mods, also tab 2 7 support s otg.
