I have Note 3 for almost a month now - things I don't like - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

PIA things I don't like about N3:
- default Yahoo main application still (9 out of 10 times) gives an error while on T-M network, yes I installed Yahoo-provided program so now while on Wi-Fi it's bugging me twice with notifications from both programs
- It keeps telling me that it's blocking some applications and also opens that stupid Magazine screen
- the charger cable is too thick and unique so I purchased another Samsung S3-S4-N2 OEM calbe - and guess what - it does not fit N3
- there is no HUMAN way of rooting and unlocking yet

sell it... get an iPhone.

Yahoo account is blocked on cell network for some reason. My friend has same problem with different phone too. Yahoo is getting worse lately.
There is a root method without changing the Knox status, you just have to search for it. From what I did, it took me less than 5 min to root the phone and it is very human way. I did it so as well as many here....
I froze the magazine app after root. I never have problem with security check pop up on with the phone.

Also the charger cable has the micro usb 3.0 attach hence why it is thicker and wider. You can still use standard micro usb 2 cable for data and charging if you don't like the one that came with the phone.
There are 2 holes on the bottom. The slightly wider one fits standard usb 2.0 cable. This stuff is in your manual that come with the phone btw, if not, Google will help a lot.

Who uses Yahoo mail anymore?
Rooting its easy for those competent to do it. Some people shouldn't (especially if they can't figure out how to get a common microusb charging cable which are everywhere)

My complaints are..
- bettery isnt good... used to get way more on the Note 2.. even the s4 has better battery.... FOR ME
SGN3

Something is very wrong with your phone or battery then if your getting worse battery life than a s4.

Sorry, I think what people are saying is. There are common ways to fix your problem.
1. You posted this on Dec 13. There were already 3 ways to root the phone.
2. You have been a member since 2011. So i'm hoping that you know how to turn off the security checks on Android phones after 2 yrs.
3. You say you bought a universal charger that does not fit the standard USB 2.0 slot? But you have had micro usb equipment in the past i'm guessing. Shows that you should already know that the OEM cable is for 3.0 use and how to plug in a 2.0 cable.
As for Yahoo. I don't use the app so not sure why you would have so many problems with this. But i would not say this is a Note 3 issue, but a Yahoo issue.
Sorry that you have been offended. It's not right for others to offend. But i'm thinking others figured, somebody with an account from 2011 should know common Android features and know how to use an Android phone well enough to search the site or the web for the answers.

Do you have a case on? I had an issue using a regular micro USB cable when I had the impact case now I have a pt case and this one has a bigger opening so no more issues.

Ditto to all except I DO use Yahoo and it works wonderfully for me. Not sure what his issue is...
And to the battery guy... something is WRONG. I get 15 hours with 5.5 hours of screen on time. From when I get up to when I go to bed every day. My S4 would never make it that far. And never more that 4 hours of Screen on time.

1. There was no human ways to root the phone (not without breaking the warranty, risking to brick it etc.)
2. Yes Infuse 4G -> S3 -> S4 -> N2 -> N3 but I don't not live on this forum have other things to do
3. On the charger I simply had to force the plug into the socket, so everything is fine

Tired of locked bootloader, call me a sellout.

I have decided that I can not deal with the locked bootloader on this tablet and have chosen to sell it (got more then I paid). The A100 is a wonderful tablet and has great potential but the lack of developers and dead end bootloader is a showstopper.
I am waiting for another brand 7 inch tablet to arrive by Fedex later this week. It has the same basic specs as the a100. CWM is already available and there is a small amount development going on. But it is new on the market. No ICS yet. There is some talk in getting CM9 on it.
It is really disappointing that the 10 inch tabs are getting all of the glory, I really think the 7 inch is the best size for carrying with you.
see yah!
The locked bootloader isn't a big deal for me because the tab already does everything I want it to do. The only thing that could make this tab already better than what it is would be the unlocked bootloader that way we could look at different rom options (but to be honest the rom that's currently there isn't that bad at all). Granted it would be nice to overclock, but its already pretty fast and I haven't really had any hiccups while using it since I released the custom build.prop (except for using hdmi which I'm working on).
I think eventually we'll get some sort of work around for the bootloader working, its just a matter of time. I'm definitely not going to drop this tab though just because we don't have it figured out yet.
I do wish there was someone other than myself that's taken an interest in this tab that knows their way around custom recoverys and bootloaders since that's not one of my strong points but at least I'm trying to help.
I wont call you a sell out, but I will wish you good luck with your new device and happy modding!

I agree, but everyone is entitled to thier opinion. I personally don't care how bad you thought it sucked and what you're replacing it with. If you don't have anything useful to contribute don't bother posting. For me these "goodbye" types of posts fall into that catagory.
That's just my own opinion though.

I think its a simple way of letting their frustrations go. I was just doing some research on this tab as I'd like to have a nice little 7 inch carry along but not so sure about it with the locked b/l and bad viewing angles.
Is the screen as bad as it looks in videos? From what I've seen and read this thing runs very smooth and lagfree, am I right about that?
Thanks for any info.

Theres really only 1 bad angle which is about 120 degrees towards the bottom. It gets darker. So jus flip it 180 in landscape and youre good. Left, right and top angle are great IMO. As far as speed. Here's one I posted....you be the judge....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-99O4-gmQ6E&list=UUHqepxR6_suYYKySqKxymDg&index=3&feature=plcp
The only lag I've ever experienced was when I was on the early 3.2 builds. After upgrading to the latest 3.2.1and running the custom build.prop, the only bit of lag I've seen is playing 720p video in flash and 720p software mode video on hdmi out. But my atrix had the same issue, so I think its just a limitation of stock tegra2. I resovled it on my atrix by overclocking, so if we ever find a method of running a custom kernel I think it'll be resolved.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have never experienced any lag whatsoever in the a100. also, i have heard so much about the viewing angles, and as aznmode said, there is only one slightly off angle and there is no reason whatsoever to have to be looking in that angle unless you just choose to do so. I have several tabs and i use the acer more than the others combined because it does everything that is needed and it is very easy to carry around. Also I have hear reviewers complain about the battery, however i can useit on and off all day long without charging and also it charges twice as fast as most. i wouldn't hesitate to purchase this tab again, i would just love to see some more development. The rom itself is very fast and extremely stable, the only real complaint that i have about the tab is that i would like to see usb host mode working. i also wanted to say thanks to crossix and all of the other devs that have put alot of work into it so far!

If you have a big microsd card, you could swap it with the internal memory (I really need to add direct links to these things to my signature..).
Just out of curiosity has anyone contracted koush to see if he can unlock the bootloader. On his website he says that he just needs the tablet for about a week. I know that you guys have been working on it and have made some bits of progress, but maybe a new set of eyes might be helpful. I do support for two as we got the kids some for Christmas but I need to leave them stock so they can't get into and erase stuff they need for them to run.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes or if this has already been attempted just disregard.
Thanks to the developers for their work.

I started this thread when I was really pissed off at the A100. Between my touch screen failing and the many hours spent to get a working tun.ko on it. Due to the encrypted kernel I could not even load a kernel module.
To explain I need tun.ko and advanced routing so I can connect to a Cisco VPN for work. While waiting for my tab to be returned from service went to Best Buy and picked up the Samsung Galaxy tab plus, installed VPNC and it worked with no problem.
The A100 is a really nice device and for 90% of people it is perfect. I actually preferred the styling compared to the Samsung slab, but VPN is the reason I wanted a tab in the first place.
I wish you all good luck with cracking the bootloader.
I plan on keeping my a100 at least until I can afford a tegra 3 tab.

I use remote desktop with a virtual pc setup to connect up to my works Cisco VPN and it works really well, especially when I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected up to the tab (I also use this same setup with my atrix), it works great!
I also use this same setup for one of my clients Nortel Networks VPN which doesn't work at all on android nativity. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the a100 but for the price its hard to find fault with it.

Agreed the price is right.
The virtual PC solution is not an option since I not only need it for RDP and VNC but also to sync my contacts, email and calendar. I was connecting to my home VPN and then jumping through to work but I need my contacts and email in somewhat a real time solution.

5 Main Issues with Sprint's SGN2
I posted this up on Sprint's Forum to show that they are handicapping their new phone; thought I would post here as well.
No multiwindow capability
No Apps to SD capability
No simultaneous voice and data capability
No wireless charging capability
No GSM sim card swapability
I'll probably still get the SGN2 and will be happier when an update comes later to provide for the multiwindow capability because it is one of the things I really wanted this phone for; besides the huge screen and quad core processor.
And not being able to move apps to the sd card is a step backwards when we are moving forward with Android. What is up with that? This could become a problem for me as I usually like to load up my cell with apps.
Okay, we also lost the ability to talk on the phone while also using an app on the phone. From what I understand, it is becuase of hardware configuration wouldn't allow this.
Then the wireless charging would have been nice, but Sprint removed the contacts so we can't purchase the replacement back cover that would have given us wireless charging.
Finally, while I don't plan on traveling to other countries in the near future, you never really know, so I would have liked to have a true world phone where I can utilize SIM cards from other countries for cheaper price than what Sprint charges for international roaming. As it is, Sprint permanently hardwired their own sim into the phone. Still it does have GSM capability = $$$$
Started out really excited about the Note 2, just not as excited now. Still need to upgrade from my Epic and this seems the best choice.
You read my mind...in all points. Thank you.

yeah I'm really hoping we can at least get the multitasking update which was one of the main resins fir me purchasing this bad boy...saying a prayer!
Are these not the wireless charging contacts?
Those should be the NFC contacts.
i'm hoping jellybomb ports it from the other roms. very jealous the other versions have it already...
I'm sure (or atleast hope) that we will get in a update. I was excited about the feature as many others are, but if not, I'm sure devs will later port (as another member said) it over.
If I'm not mistaken, the other variants did not come out the box with the feature and received in a update some weeks later? I don't see why this would not apply to us as well. Not surprised one bit ours didn't come out the box with the feature. The international version came out, got the update before our variant even came out. I would suspect that our devices were already in route (being too late) to apply that feature?
Either way, both my wife and I are extremely happy with the device. We knew/know what could happen going into purchasing the device.
Just my first thoughts on it.

Perhaps you've not been following the post. The Sprint version is missing the phone-side internal contacts for any wireless induction charging, so the phone, no matter what mod, cannot do it.
There *are* directions on how to mod the international and I believe some of the other US carried models to use the Palm Pre touchstone charger induction coils and bases, however, sprint fully removed this, and the SPH-L900 doesn't include these pins.

Wrong. The contacts are on the board. Get a replacement rear housing and back plate, problem solved.

If you really want inductive phone charging it wouldn't matter if there were contacts (hidden or not). Other phones that never had it as an option have been modded to work with inductive charging.

BTW, there is a thread showing the internals of the Sprint phone and it looks like the inductive charging leads are just under the back plastic piece. They just need to be tested with a multimeter when the battery is in place to confirm.

I knew about the last three but not the first two nor wallet or screen record. WTF? I don't understand the reasoning behind removing functionality that are determining factors to have this phone in the first place. Split screen was a huge selling point for me. Bad enough I gave up my keyboard. On screen typing just sucks, even if I can do it efficiently. Split screen was supposed to be a great way to reference from one while typing into another.
Sprint hasn't done one thing that is customer friendly ever since the iphone came to town. Policies and perks all tightened and done away with. Now phones are all gimped out with embedded batteries, embedded gsm sims and removed features. Did they take a Verizon 101 class last year?

They offered me the buy up program for 65 $ to move my upgrade date to that day. Which was November 1st. Had to sell them my 3d back (which was becoming unusable with phantom screen touches) and got 53 $ for it. Went ahead and handed over my MINT OG evo as well for 38 $ ...
First night was rough getting used to size and touchwiz. But after a full day yesterday its becoming easier to accept. And now I find out all this **** is missing that originally drew me to this in the first place.
Now im really leaning towards taking it back for the sg3. Being able to do other things while on the phone such as even just take a pic is important, or sending a text while on phone. Or a number of the listed things missinf in our sprint version for that matter.
can anyone inform me about the gs3 being able to do voice + data?

[Q] Is there a way to get music apps (Spotify, Songza) to output through USB?

I just switched from iPhone to Note II and I'm pretty pissed I can't just plug into my cars USB port and have it play through the speakers anymore...
I have a 2012 Honda FIt that has a built in USB port and it worked fine with iPhone. When I plug in the Note II, I get a "Unsupported" message on the car stereo. Anyone have a workaround for getting apps to play through the microUSB properly?
Maybe this plus the cable you already have? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007SXINGK
Not sure never owned an apple product in my life. I prefer bluetooth because I hate wires.

To clarify: when I plug the micro USB cord from my Note II to the USB port built in to my car's stereo, it doesn't work like it should.

Zing!.... But seriously though, I wouldn't mind and answer to this as well. Building a custom dash in my car and it would be hella convenient to just build in a little cradle to set my n2 in for my music. My head unit has the usb, but just pluging things together doesn't do it... Maybe a "dock mode" or something that is missing?
Edit... Why would anyone EVER suggest a product that has basically 1.5 stars? It's obviously crap.

No I read it. I just didn't take the time to post the whole thing from my phone. There doesn't appear to anything that will help you immediately to achieve what you want at this time other than using the cable I showed you or if you have Bluetooth use that or you can get a Bluetooth to FM transmitter. All things that will get the music to your radio.
after taking 5 minutes with a quick google search I turned up that until 4.+ android there was no way to do this. However, I don't think Samsung implemented it with the note 2 since I couldn't find anything about it. I did however turn up the items I mentioned.
It looks like if that is what you want and you aren't willing to invest in the way Android works Android isn't for you and you should probably return the device and get an iPhone again. The USB drive you mentioned probably uses the Apple protocol and USB mass storage protocol neither of which the note can perform. If you have a 3.5mm connector that would allow you to connect it as well. My wife's vehicle had this as an input option that I quickly changed to a Bluetooth connection with a simple like item from Amazon.
Android's Bluetooth protocol is amazing after ice cream sandwich, auto connecting to my vehicle's stereo everytime I start my truck and with Tasker/Automateit one can even have it auto launch your music apps. with the awesome battery life of this device, which the iPhone can't touch, I don't even bother to plug it in and just leave it in my pocket jump in and bam Pandora starts playing. When I turn off my truck it stops on it's own and I go about my day.
now that is not to say I am not incorrect and there is another solution that would get you going the way you want. However there are a lot of people on XDA way smarter at these phones than I am and none of them have Chimed in yet so that isn't a good sign because generally the really knowledgeable people waste no time Answering questions.
The 30 pin connector from your previous iOS devices have way more abilities than the 4 to 5 pin micro USB port does. Which is great but limits people to the Apple Ecosystem, which is great for Apple's pocket book. Not so great for a person wishing to move to another device. This is why I always tell people if you are invested in Apple just stick with them and if android then stick with android. Nothing funnier than an idiot *****ing because their Apps don't work anymore after changing from one to the other.

I am sorry I couldn't help you. perhaps being appreciative of my attempt would get someone else to help you rather than being rude about it. I was attempting to educate you that you didn't buy an iOS device and shouldn't expect it to act like one. Good luck now I will be surprise if anyone else even bothers with you with that attitude. You're the one that bought a phone before bothering to research it and assumed it would work like an iOS device. The phone works exactly like it SHOULD it doesn't however work exactly like you THINK it should. That is not a failure of the device.

I was being nice and it was the only thing that I found that would possibly do what he was asking. Seriously what is with all the hate for someone just trying to help out. Why wouldn't you put Bluetooth into something that you are building that is that path that Android has taken not the path of cables.

Dude, seriously, read what you just said. You were attempting to educate me that I didn't buy an iOS device; thank you Captain Obvious. I know what phone I have and that is why I posted in the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II forum.
I don't want it to "work like an iPhone". It's ridiculous for you to say that I'm crazy for thinking that my $700 (if purchased unlocked) smartphone SHOULD be able to output audio via the USB port like other smartphones (other Android and iPhones work fine in my car), thus using the DAC directly instead of having to use the lower quality 3.5mm headphone jack or Bluetooth A2DP.
Anyways, to anyone who wants to be helpful, I've found that the issue has something to do with the fact that Samsung seems to have changed the way that the Note II and S3 operate the USB port. Anyone have any ideas for restoring the previous functionality of the port? Thanks!

he was exactly correct....the protocol has not been implemented.
there is no way to know it will be.
give it time or go back to the iphone seems to be the only applicable responses...so pick one.
I too went wireless back in 2008 so can't be of much more help than that.
Everything I listen to works over my head unit via bt.
isnt bt standard on the fit?
ok now wait...are you looking for dac ...hell thats been a samsung issue across multiple devices for a while...though i thought I read it was fixed now. it was an issue on the orig note..the skyrocket.. variants of the s2 seems like one or two more as well.
guess it was not fixed.
you might edit your original post ...wording it as two apps won't stream over usb like on my iphone is harder for some to understand you are talking about dac

Otg let's your phone host usb devices. It's not what you're looking for.
There's a mod that lets you mount your sd card in msc mode...but it won't let you listen to streaming services.
I believe there's a kernel in the dev forum that enables usb audio. This would not likely interface with your car's usb port. What you need is a usb to 3.5mm splitter
It's just like plugging in via the audio port get this way you only need to plug one cable to you phone.
And you are kinda rude.

So you have had android devices that could play pandora, spotify and the like via USB? Ive never had a device personally capable of dping that. My wifes head unit can play Pandora but i think that might be Bluetooth only, it its definitely only Pandora though. I was able to mount as mass storage in the Android 2.3 days, but even with the USB audio in 4+ i doubt if any current market product has the capabilities to control the music like it does the iPhone. I'm sure iPhone uses proprietary software in your stereo to deccoe the audio stream and unfortunately Android is lacking in any manufacturers supporting it.

There are some aftermarket stereos that interface with android.
There is no magic cable that will make your stock stereo work with your Note's Pandora.
I'd like to know exactly what differences you notice between a 3.5mm cord and bypassing the DAC while using your stock audio system.

Thanks.
I would prefer to use the usb plug because I don't have to adjust my headphone output every time I plug it in and because I only need one cable to charge and listen to music. I have read that a lot of car stereos use the "iPod Out" feature of the iPhone and this is why it won't interface properly with Android devices. It's too bad someone hasn't been able to make an app/hack that would emulate this function and intercept the audio out from an Android phone. I can't believe that I'm the only one who is interested in using the usb plug built into their cars for the purpose of charging and listening to music from their smartphones... I guess it's time to spend the money on replacing my factory stereo with an aftermarket head unit with bluetooth.
I just fm transmit my music. I'm not sure of the bitrate difference between bt and a fm signal but it's useable. Then I can use my car charger.
Honestly I just got an iPod for music. Had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. I use spotify so I just download my tracks offline and play them through the iPod. Its also good to have something relatively cheap (its a 2nd gen) to use while working out, who wants to have this huge phone on them while working out. Its great for a lot of things but that iPod out is great considering I can change tracks using the steering wheel. For everything else I have my note 2.

I was just told Samsung is going to "turn off" the Note 7

In a chat with US Cellular I was just told "with the recall, it will not be able to stay on your account much longer, due at some point, Samsung will be turning off all the phones on all carriers."
I asked when but she said they do not know the date yet.
She also said I could re activate my Note 7 (which I didn't think was allowed) if the Note 5 I purchased online doesn't work properly.
It is inevitable.
They will try to get everyone to return or exchange their Note 7s first. And then this kill switch to reach out to those who has been living under a rock.
Unless you root the device and circumvent the kill switch.

what is more laughable is that he has never owned one. From memory he had/has an S7E and was thinking about upgrading (before all the shxtstorm).
I am willing to suffer a phone sizzle if it means I get a few more weeks with this fantastic phone. I understand the risks, they are significantly low, but I also understand the impact of a total battery failure (running without the 256G SD card currently to avoid damage to it in the event of the phone internally melting).
I do not appreciate BrOadbands incessant drilling of existing N7 users, worse than a 19 year old cop doing the "respect my authority" thing.
Only 2 phones have cooked in Australia, from the original batch (1 was a forum member on Whirlpool forums, the other Samsung indicated when they were quoting numbers), we were getting the second batch a bit later than you guys in the US which may have meant slightly improved production process (made in Vietnam though, if that means anything).
I am however(unfortunately) getting this replaced, as I do fly and the American FAA getting a bit nervous and doing the banning meant globally all airlines followed not to mention that Samsung are giving some financial incentives that may not last forever to replace with S7E/S7 (got told almost 2 weeks ago now by a local Samsung phone rep "your S7E is coming within 21 days"...)
I think part of the product pull by Samsung was not about an inherent fault in all units, but some inevitable butt covering, since the product reputation was tainted, no way to recover from that, the phone would be impossible to sell with all the transportation bans, and how many different battery icon colours could they use to indicate if you owned a v1,2 or 3 lol.
I do believe it had a higher than normal failure rate though, esp in the US, my speculation is the soft construction of the battery was allowing it to get sufficiently distorted during assembly that some further condition was causing battery failure for those excessively distorted (such as plate to plate crystal growth).
Edit: look at this discussion about li-ion failure modes: http://www.mpoweruk.com/lithium_failures.htm
Essentially, it says that the anode SEI layer can break down in as low temps as 80degC including from external heating. I know when we had that dodgy Ocululus update, my CPU when I checked was over 70degC and the whole phone was very warm due to very high current draw due to the max CPU load. So heat from both current draw from the battery, and external heat from the CPU getting toasty would not have helped any phone where the battery was also a little squashed/distorted when packed into the phone during assembly.

Would have preferred they nerfed the CPU instead. And disable fast charge and wireless charging. All to prevent it from generating too much heat. Limiting to 60% probably isn't going to help much.

If the battery has any charge at all it can still "explode" I am not sure this would make the device any less of a risk than a 100 charged battery. Sure the fire might be less but it would still pack a punch.
Really disabling fast charge would be more beneficial I would think.

If you paid any attention to the pictures we were shown about the burned out phones. There was a a complete burn out and the phones were destroyed. Not a single phone was just damaged a little and stopped working. That shows the battery had a complete or near complete charge.
The batteries burned out completely because of the amount of charge held into them. Not because of their chemical composition. If you know what I mean.
If you ever worked with batteries; You'll know they get very hot and can expand as they overcharge. Thus expansion plus the new sharp aluminum frame inside, may have been 1 of the reasons for ignition we believe.
Keeping your charge at 60/80% lowers the risk of ignition by a lot.

I actually think BroadBand or whatever actually did post a receipt of the purchase, although everyone knows you can find that on the internet. The person is a far-left lib/progressive who thinks their safe spaces are in jeopardy because a phone (Iphone 7 anyone??) may catch fire.
Anyway, I seriously, seriously doubt they will disable the phone completely. You bought the phone, and it is your phone. If you choose to use another battery inside the note 7, then press on (I have heard reports of folks trying this...it worked, but not sure of the specifics. One guy cracked his screen trying to get the battery out).
Plus, it is an FCC violation to disrupt a communications device. You don't know the person's circumstances. They may live on the fringe of civilization and haven't heard the news or didn't get the push. The first person that is harmed because their working phone was disabled will lead to humongous lawsuits.
A Sprint employee in Newnan Georgia told my daughter that Samsung would be shutting off her phone, and it was against the law for her to keep using. They pressured her hard, made her cry (she's young, first time away from home) because she couldn't get in touch with me. She didn't know what to do because she didn't want to get "arrested," which was the implication they were trying to make. She ended up getting pressured in a S7 because she was afraid of getting in trouble (and she is super furious for getting duped). She wanted to keep the phone until the release of the s8. She was in the store to pay her bill and they saw the phone sticking out of her pocket.
---------- Post added at 10:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 AM ----------
By the way, Samsung has publicly stated that less than half of the phones were returned. That indicates a million or so are still out there.
I promise you, PROMISE YOU, that the very FIRST Note7 to catch fire despite the recall (because not being returned), would be splattered over every news channel.
How many post-recall reports of exploding batteries have we seen??? As far as I can tell, ZERO!!!! Don't mean it won't happen, but I think the danger is over-blown. Samsung did it because of the media coverage. A single injury (if they had not recalled) given the history of the phone would have resulted in 10s of millions of dollars in damages via litigation.

Upgrading From Galaxy Nexus - Help Me Decide

Please advise a tech challenged senior who needs to upgrade.
Still using a Galaxy Nexus that I purchased nearly 3 years ago (January 2014).
Committed to Sprint
Need bigger display for my aging eyes.
Removable battery STRONGLY preferred.
I'll be rooting or jailbreaking whatever I purchase.
Option 1)
Note 4
32GB
Has everything that I want
Dated
At $200-$300, pretty spendy compared to option 3 (see below)
Option 2)
LG v20
64GB
Removable battery and storage, looks promising
Latest android, great hardware, feature rich
At $350, spendiest option
LG reputation seems uneven, boot loop problem ???
Option 3)
iPhone 6s Plus (I only included it because of perceived value)
64GB
Smooth, efficient functionality
Non-Removable battery
Apple seems control freekish
$199 w/warranty is appealing
I've been eyeing the Note 4 for a while and was ready to bid on a used example on Ebay.
Called Sprint to pre-clear the ESN.
They mentioned these other options and I paused to reconsider.
Is it TOO late to purchase the Note 4 simply because it is relatively dated ?
OR,
Is it STILL current ENOUGH compared to these other devices ?
If I have omitted OTHER Sprint phones in my above list please advise.
I lean heavily on the expertise and knowledge of the XDA Community when I upgrade because I don't have the time to follow developments as closely as I'd like.
It was XDA that helped me select the Galaxy Nexus.
It was my first Android Device and I've been very happy with it.
But it's time to move on.
I strongly advise against the iphone. It might be a biased opinion because I'm anti apple. But in my eyes android is way more open and customizable than any apple device.
I don't know much about the Lg V20 to give advice on it.
But as far as the Note 4 goes. Yes it is an ageing device but that also lets you get it cheaper. It still has a small group of developers. It has Nougat for it in the form of CM14. It's hardware might be older but is still better than new low to mid level phones. It has all the bells and whistles. (Battery, ir, sd, finger, etc). After what happened to note 7, this is best note series phone out there.
I will keep my note 4 until it blows up.
As far as where to get phone, yes beware of fakes and such. Never used it but i hear Swappa is suppose to be good place. Just make sure the imei is clean and it's Bootloader shows it to be the device is being sold as. And if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't.
Happy hunting!
Ps. I don't use sprint but do have sprint note 4 and very happy. Yes I'm sure sprint would rather you buy a new device, that's why they gave you suggestions .
But Maybe some actual sprint user devs can give you some input. If you do your research and make sure it's developer friendly device. Im sure you'll be happy with whatever you get.
If you look into another device, check if it's got a thread here and check it's development.
Good luck.
I agree with a lot of what aaron74 said. Though my desktop is an iMac, and I have a MacBook Pro, I won't get an iPhone, because you just can't do what you want with it. Unless you jailbreak it. One of the "features" of jailbreaking is getting apps without paying for them. I'm against that.
The Note 4 is much better than the Note 5, IMHO, because it has both a removable battery and a microSD card slot. Having said that, I loved my Note7 until they recalled them. It only had a microSD card slot. I've had new phone fever since then, but went back to my Note 4 because there still is a lot of development going on for it. The nice thing about getting a Note 4 is that later, if something new and wonderful comes out, you'll probably be able to afford it.
I am on Sprint. The Note 4 is great on Sprint. It has a lot of the features that the newest Samsung phones have like fingerprint reader and multi-window. It still has the IR blaster, so you can use it as a remote for a lot of TVs, DVD players, etc. It has the S-Pen, which even the S7 and S7 Edge don't have. Another problem with the S7s is root hasn't been attained yet. There's very little development happening because of it.
If you are going to root and flash custom ROMs, be sure to read a lot. Then ask questions. It's not the most difficult phone to flash, but having a PC is pretty much necessary.
As for buying a used Note 4, I have bought 2 on Craigslist. (I have also bought a bunch of other phones from Craigs.) I always meet the seller at a Sprint store and have the Sprint people check to make sure the phone can be activated on Sprint. I had one problem with one I bought that was already rooted. A Sprint tech finally pushed through the activation. I really didn't think that could be done. I didn't realize it until I got it home what the problem was. I think the guys figured I was just a dumb lady who wouldn't know better. Also, I always have them activate it, pay the seller, and put Sprint's insurance on it when they activate it. That way it's up to Sprint to fix it if a problem turns up later. I do the $11/month insurance, because I don't need them to insure my network. I can fix that myself. YMMV. I live in the Minneapolis-St Paul area. Note 4s are going for around $200-250.
I have a friend who got a new Note 4 on Amazon for about $325, but she is on T-Mobile. I figure Amazon is pretty safe, as they try really hard to make their customers happy. Amazon also had some refurbished Note 4s for less. Also, buying on Amazon, and probably on eBay, too, allows you to get their insurance, which can be pretty cheap. The one thing none cover, that Sprint does, is lost or stolen phones.
Some accessories you might want are a glass screen protector, a case, and maybe an extra battery. Amazon is a great place for those items. But Sprint is selling the battery pack online , which includes a new battery, an external charging case and a carrying case for the battery. All for $25. You have to use your charger for the charging case. The reason I suggest a battery is that weird things happen when the battery starts to go. Sometimes the Note 4 will shut down for no reason, or bootloop. Or get really hot when charging. I mostly charge with a regular charger rather than the Fast Charger it comes with. I figure the phone has less chance of getting overheated that way, and possibly the batteries last longer. The wireless charging pad is also an option. It will only charge at the lower speed, though, no matter which one you get.
Sorry if that was TMI. Hope it helps you decide, though.
Thanks for the helpful replies.
After considering all available options I picked up a brand new Note 4 on Ebay for $300.
I SHOULD have picked one up when they first came out but I kept hoping for a new Nexus w/ replaceable batteries, like my Galaxy Nexus.
Anyway, the ESN is clean.
The phone is new and beautiful.
I'd NEVER even seen one in person before I purchased mine.
Now I'm trying to learn how to root it and install a custom recovery.
It was so easy with my Galaxy Nexus.
I simply used the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit and it did all the work.
Sadly, I think I may have screwed up when I first powered it up three days ago.
I was prompted to update and, without thinking, I let it.
Well, it installed Marshmallow 6.0.1 and now I can't find the "enable OEM Unlock" toggle that is supposed to appear after I enable developer options.
This is needed to proceed to root, as I understand things
Come to find out that the Marshmallow upgrade eliminated it.
So I need to figure out how to address this before I proceed.
Anyway, I'm sure I'll find the answers here at XDA.
I've learned alot since I joined up in 2008 to educate myself about my first PPC, the Windows Mobile HTC Touch.
I'm very excited to join the others here who have selected the Note 4.
I'm sure it was the best choice for me and I expect to keep her for a couple of years anyway !

You'll find out things will be done differently but it is still an easy process to root and Twrp.
Correct, there is no more oem unlock in dev options, But you do want to make sure reactivation lock is off. It's in settings>security. Attached pic.
Couple things to know, custom roms will need you to be on certain stock firmware (eg. PJ1, PK1, etc). If your gonna install any newer roms then your newest firmware should be fine. Just if you go to install any older roms you might have to downgrade your stock firmware.
All stock firmware is installed with pc Odin program.
Just know if you go custom it will trip your knox counter. If you don't know what that is google it. It has to do with security using your phone for work, and also warranty. Me myself it's junk but i guess some people need it.
If you want Root and custom though, first thing your gonna want to do is install Twrp with Odin, and make a complete backup of your phone.
But all the info is hereto find and if your unsure just ask.

I had that same HTC Touch! There was a dev here on XDA that figured out how to run Android on the Touch. You copied a file to your microSD card. Then you booted into Windows Mobile. From there you ran "HaRET," which was a script to run Android on top of WM. I ran Myn's Warm Donut. It's hard to believe I was running this almost 7 years ago! FWIW, the HTC Touch forum is still up and running here on XDA!
"it is still an easy process to root and Twrp"
Well said,
I was able to TWRP and ROOT w/o too much trouble.
I was briefly interested in the KingoRoot (one-step root).
But I researched and thought better of it.
Anyway, I'm very happy to have the flexibility that rooting offers.
Sweat a few bullets as I proceeded but it all worked out OK !
I'll look at Custom Roms but probably will be happy to simply enjoy my device as is.
My limited appreciation of Custom Roms is that they promise many things but there always seems to be a price.
Battery life, loss of features, random glitches & hitches.
Still open to learn though and XDA is certainly the place for it.
Anyway, I feel like I've found a new home among helpful friends and I'm grateful and happy to be here.
