SIM Card question/help - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi, I recently rooted my phone and got cyanogenmod's ROM integrated... I never did any of this before and
I've been up the past few days/nights studying up on all this information. Can any of you help me figure out how to make free phone calls on my phone? Isn't that what we can do on jailbroken phones? BTW I am on a 2 year contract if that matters, which it may.
I can't make outgoing calls but I can get incoming, is there a way to bypass anything to make outgoing calls?

Yeah, it's called downloading an app called "Text Plus" and watching their stupid ads for cell minutes. Wi-Fi only.

Rather than being funny (lol) can you just tell me if jailbroken phones can call for free without paying a network provider? Or was that just a big lie to get everyones attention.

You pay for what you get.... If you don't pay for it you don't get the service. Unfortunately....

Ah okay, that's not a big deal. Thanks for the answers, Dex. Is there a thread about the benefits of jailbreaking a phone then? Cos so far I've found a few things worthwhile.

Benefits of Rooting your phone:
In summary, you have access to files on your phone that you didn't have before. You can change boot animations and let apps have authority to change the "main" portions of your phone. Most people usually install ROMs on their phones. It's a customized OS for phones. Rooting is the first step you take to having a plethora of customizations on your phone. That's the importance of ROMs. On the other hand you can have this unlimited customization unlocked through the Xposed module which can change your phone without the need of a ROM. The best things about ROMs though is if you have an awesome developer, he'll keep you updated to the most recent software that some OEMs can't keep up with.

Looking at how the software has functionality to push policies and restrict usage of apps I'd say it would definitely allow them to micromanage the phones. But then again, as an IT guy I'd guess you wouldn't be happy if one of your users decided they wanted to blow away whatever OS you installed on a PC and put Ubuntu on it.
Im just hoping that it will not prevent a phone that is rooted from connecting to exchange. I really love wireless teather lol
That would require a tremondous amount of intelligence on the part of the system. I think this is more for 'allow only people who work for me to access the site' and everyone else should be denied.

Since this is in the Incredible forum I'm assuming you have an Incredible, in which case you dont need to be rooted to wireless tether...just FYI if your boss cracks down.
Google "HTC tether natively" and I'm sure it will pop
I read thru the site from the link.
Looks like through air-watch they'd have full admin access to device.
Question is whether the air-watch admin would 'blacklist' the superuser and/or tethering app(s).
Unlikely, imho, whether an astute IT person and/or admin of this system would allow a superuser app on devices that connect to company assets, but stranger things have happened.
Another thing i like is the root unistaller/ set cpu and custom roms. but thats another battle haha
Plus if you try to wipe the phone and install the new ROM, I am sure the Boss is going to have a few words with whoever did it.
Besides, it's not their phone, it's the company's phone. They can do what they want with it.
I work for a company in the top 20 of the fortune 500..we're looking at allowing employees to bring their own devices into our exchange servers but the catch is how to remote wipe them..they are looking at how to deal with rooted devices. I'm not privy to how they are working that out.

Thats what we are trying to do. my boss is afraid of a rooted droid bringing in some virus/malware in and he would also like to force things like screen lock pin codes. I dont see how a rooted phone would bring that stuff in anymore then a stock one but forcing a security policy would stop someone from stealing data from it rooted or not i would think
The fact that it is rooted does not make it any more likely to get a virus then an unrooted phone. Almost all android phones have the ability to install apps from the SD card and that is where a virus won't come from, not the ROM you happen to be using.
However, the installation of this could put your phone in shackles. In addition to the possibility of restricting what you can install, such as games, it could kill your ability to connect to wifi hotspots that are unknown to your company, they could can wipe your phone at a moments notice and track your location without your knowledge.
That way if you call in sick, your boss can find out if you are really at the game or home in bed.
In any case, if this is a work phone then you don't have much choice but if this is your personal phone, I would try to stay clear of it.
Very nice answer. Im the one who has to implement it so i can always exclude myself from the devices that are being watched. The call in sick thing is an awsome yet crappy thing lol

Or leave it at home and enjoy the game. Less suspicious if the phone is on and at home than off and lord knows where.

My employer is extremely security aware, and they are considering using an app named "Good." It partitions the Exchange data in an encrypted folder and allow that folder to be remotely wiped. Accessing the data is only available through the app, which is PIN protected.
This may be a better solution to your boss... and you.
This is what they have told me, I have not used it yet, and I am an amatuer at best when it comes to IM/IT. They were amazed and very concerned when they became aware that rooting and installing a custom ROM was easy enough that I could successfully do it...
Glad my employer hasn't learned how to do remote wipes on Droid phones since it would be end of many of us that hate iPhones. 75% of our staff use Droid phones and 50% of us have our phone rooted.

It is in the Market. The full name is "Good for Enterprise" and the dev is listed as "Good Technology"
Policy for personal phones
Our company finally decided to allow personal phones to be connected to exchange. The phone just has to be compatible with accepting exchange policy, and we had to sign a company form stating that we are ok with them wiping our data if the situation arose.

Please upload the guide to make modded firmware jpkc1 or upload the modded firmware.

no. instead go and buy the apps and give programmers' work respect!

Can you understand or even ask why he asked for sp**fed apps?!!!!
for me it is too simple
until now almost the whole middle east didn't get paid app service from samsung apps
Can you imagine how is bada look like right here?!!!!!
it is like weird platform used by idiots (excuse me for that word)who are so patient for it to be great
i don't support sp**fing but if samsung is not going to support our region then it should be done
Am i right?

Nope, spoofing apps in any case is a piracy, and it hurts bada and developers (who work hard to give us some apps) the most. You better write to Samsung and ask for opening paid version of Samsung Apps in your region instead of stealing someone's work. Therefore personally I give this topic -1.
love90, I understand your thoughts, but akuji is right: better make BIG trouble and write hundreds (or thousands) of e-mails and send them to samsung. also, form a group with a petition and go even bigger!
another thing: what is your problem? I can buy apps in ANY store everywhere of the world. if I do not like the apps in x, then I change the store to another country and buy them there. you can do this, too, I guess. ip faking is not even needed, I believe, but if it is needed, then just use one of million tools for that.
there is just NO reason to **** up the little programmers' base we have.
I don't have a Visa or Master card(should i hate myself for not having a one?!)
Also those damn cards for paying are not so popular right here
Another thing : i don't trust Samsung app to give them my card no. even if i have a one
I'd prefer using phone bill when it is available
E-mailed Samsung many times and they always say we are working on it and nothing happens
All my forums members did also so it is not about that
Samsung seems to be not interested in doing it
For my case i gathered important apps and added them to the firmware to use them until the paid service is out and i'll erase them and then buy them when they are available
1. I do rather not believe, you will erase apps later and buy them. Sorry, nobody is acting like that.
2. Now and for ALL TIMES: It is NOT Samsung's error, but the bad behaviour of PHONE CONTRACTORS, if P-Bill is not active in your country. You have to call your providers then and make trouble there.
3. You know, I thought you have NO possibility to buy apps, but now you are telling me it is just about the ****ing credit card? That is hilarious. So, you do not want to trust Samsung. Who else not? Flight companies? Amazon? Ebay? What do you want to do then with your credit card? Just sit and fart on it? =)
Seriously, there are 5000 prepaid credit card providers in the world which offer no further costs than aquiring the prepaid credit card. Every gas station even has them. So, you can buy your apps with those prepaid credit cards and have NO problem with your data, because those are anonymus.
Nowhere in the world there is a solid base/argument for spoofing apps ... and never forget, those app programmers usually are NOT big companies, but small groups or individuals (freelancers) with an age between 20 and 45 years. So, spoofers are really ****ing up someone's monthly income.

1. yes, that sucks. in Europe it does not, too, but therefore we have the hack. that is fine with me.
2. as I said, prepaid credit cards. that is working like a phone card. you can get/buy them everywhere for 10, 20, 50 or 100 €/$. gas stations, newspaper stores, ... everywhere. also, online, of course. with those you can buy apps in the samsung store. the best thing: they are anonymus. so, it does not even matter how old you are.

EFF trying to keep rooting your phone legal

Take a look at the article and make a simple comment about what being able to legally root your phone means to you. The exemption that the dmca ruled on in 2010 is about to expire so let's make sure it gets renewed.

From what I hear jailbreaking iphones allows access to free paid apps, which is different than rooting android. However, I'm sure this should apply to both android and iphone users. If it became illegal, what would happen if we got caught? Jailed, fined, terminated by carrier?

Well, Android has access to free paid apps without root. The act of jailbreaking and stealing apps are two different things I would think.
Same with modding consoles, you aren't doing anything illegal unless you download games which you never paid for and play them.

I would absolutely agree with this. Just because I want to root my device, does not mean I desire to steal anything... in fact I buy paid apps all the time when I probably could get them for free if I looked enough.
The worst thing I have probably ever done (if you consider it wrong) as a benefit of root access, is tether my phones 3G connection (I don't get wimax) to my tablet for free. I don't consider this wrong because I am paying for the data service from Sprint, if I choose to share that with my own personal tablet, that should be my choice. I don't do it for my laptop cuz I have a much faster wifi connection at home, but its convenient for the tablet.
THe original ruling on this was in responce to Apple wanting to make it a crome to jail break the phone. The ruling said Jail breaking was legal for fair use IE being able to do customizations and use features the device would support that the Manufacturer did not want to support. These things have not changed the ruling was for fair use. you bought it you can do what you want with it. But the carriers and manufacturer's have the rigth to deny waranty if you do.
Considering Android is open source and we 'own' our phones, we can do what ever we want with them.
Without rooting, we could not access and remove the crap software that our carriers try to force down our throats. We never would have been able to remove CIQ or even know it was there. We would be helpless and putting control of everything we do into hands of the people we pay our money to every month. I don't trust my service provider to maintain my interests for me.
Its my understanding that jail breaking just lets you install apps that aren't in the app store which sounds legal to me

I just mentioned it because my cousin wanted to jailbreak his ipod to get free paid apps. I didn't necessarily mean everyone steals with rooting/jailbreaking. It was just the first thing that came to mind. The biggest reason i'd see this law passing is because of the misuse of tethering.

while i do understand this, it becomes a conflict of interest because sprint offers the same service on your phone for $30/month... so while TECHNICALLY you didnt agree to ONLY use your data for your phone, they do offer the same service you arent paying for. kinda like using your buddy next door's cable. he pays for it, and doesnt mind at all that you use the other cable box from his service, but its still frowned upon. its a gray area, im not sure what kind of action the carriers can take other than drop you... not that i agree, i use hotspot too...
I hope it stays legal.
Hell all the damn money these carriers and phone manufacture's make off of us it should stay legal, at least for android phones. I could give a **** less about apple and their attitude against everyone and everything! They will put themselves out of business. But android wouldnt be android without Root/jailbreaking and everything that comes along with it. IF they ever took that away I will just use a phone for a phone and go to metro piece of **** or something!
In the apple spectrum, those slimy bastards that make fun of our everything android that's of lesser quality and how they are superior beings for being ifags, for them to go out and steal from the developers is just wrong and should be justifiable with punishment.
In the android spectrum, we don't want to steal. We just want to get the maximum potential out of our device that carriers for some odd reason try and hold back.
Probably because an android phone can last longer. Meaning: keep more interest in the end user for them not to upgrade earlier if they have rooting/rom capabilities keeping this new, fresh, and exciting. Which in turn makes less money for the carrier. But honestly i don't go to the carrier to have a bogged down **** phone and be a helpless lemon and just be forced to upgrade. I want the best bang for my buck and the sooner Carriers realize this the better we will talk of them.
well thats just like everything else these days! They make flat screen tv's to go out in 4or 5 years when the old box tv's would last 20-30 years. Cars are made to die after 150,000 miles or less and now they come out with new phones every couple of months to entice people into keeping up with the jones's and having to have the best instead of just rooting your phone and haveing anything you want on it! If we lose the ability to root and hack our phones, it will clearly be a step backwards...

We are suppose to be making stuff biodegradeable and recycling and making less waste! But these companys making the products we have to use everyday like tv's, cars, computers, phones, ect.. are filling up our land fills and creating soooo much waste and ruining our planet! It has been said that at the rate we are going now by the year 2030 we will need at least 2 planet earths to sustain everyone. Its all about GREED and GREED only. The people running everything on this planet are only thinking about their lifetime and maybe their childrens.
If it wasn't bad enough losing file share websites, now this crap? If we can't root, I won't own an Android. It is easy to steal apps, but with these websites down, I am sure it forces more people to buy them. And how are we supposed to get all of our custom ROMs with no website to host them?

Android 5.0L Allows Bloatware Removal !!!!

This is a big deal for me, if we never receive root.

OK, so this is pretty exciting information, i just hope this isnt something the carriers can disable in some way.
That being said, I do see one major downfall and that is, IMO, this might cause carriers to push the update slower, or even omit some devices that would normally get updated to make sure their apps are getting used on as many devices as possible.
Cant wait!!!
If true, it's a game changer. But why do I get the feeling carriers will still find a way to install crapware/bloatware that we can't remove.

Damn, I agree! The main reason I wanted Root (well two reasons) was for bloatware removal/freeze, and for backing up apps/app data (especially games!)....Well now with most apps doing the cloud-save thing, if Lollipop really does allow us to remove both carrier AND oem bloatware, I won't be as desperate to Root....although IF Root ever comes to our ATT Note 4, I'll still Root, just won't be as desperately needed. I'd still like to put a custom ROM on my Note4 someday, but I can wait a year or so.....after I'm out of warranty
Lets look at this like the millions upon millions of people who own a smartphone and never, ever figure out even the basics on how to use it. You know the ones, the idiots who buy the iPhone for an outrageous price, and don't even know how to use text messaging. (My mother ... I sent her a picture while on vacation of her grand children, then when I got home she handed me her phone and said "What did you do to my phone, it now has this thing on it" and I had to show her the message!) We see it all the time. People who don't even know that there is a calculator, or how to set up their email, or how to do anything other than Candy Crush on it...
The carriers can do whatever they want to those phones. Those people (and I would bet you are looking at 90% or more of smartphone owners) don't know how to uninstall an app, or don't bother to try. You could make the boatware uninstallable and the vast majority of people would still have it, and never know the difference. Up until recently the only people taking off bloatware were people like us who found a way... Root hasn't been this hard for very long, so their bloatware install numbers won't change much if we can uninstall without root.

Yes, for 2 reasons. Buying an iPhone and having absolutely no idea why she did it. I think people who are passionate about the iPhone an want one, more than anything else are delusional, but at least most of them can articulate why they want it, and many of them use it to its very limited potential. Then there is my mom, who got an iPhone because to her, thats was really the only phone they had at the store. Its falling for the advertising.
And the second reason... she released me into the wild to be a productive member of society... anyone with half a brain would have realized that it would be a key step in the collapse of modern civilization. :silly:

OMG....awesome, thank you so much sir.
What's up with all the iPhone hate? Different strokes for different folks; no reason to bad mouth others for a difference in taste.
Well, seems the way around this is already out there. This will just continue to put these apps on like they currently do, and we still can't remove them. This will only be handy if they have their programs to be downloaded automatically from the play store.....which they probably won't, they'll keep them in the system.

Any proof to this? Where are you getting this information from?
I hope this gives users the ability to remove these apps. Hell if Microsoft can pull it off so should Google. I have disabled over 20 apps on my AT&T Note 4 with the majority being carrier bloatware. Ridiculous.

This is only for phones that come with 5.0 on them. All phones upgraded from KitKat to 5.0 will not have this feature. Also these same updated phones will not have encryption as their default setting either.

CIQ Carrier IQ (spyware) back on our phones?

So while editing the features.xml file on my phone to tweak it following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6/general/mod-csc-feature-editing-t3107056
I came across these entries (screen captures attached).
Is Carrier IQ back? for those who haven't heard about it, a quick search will show you why it's something we don't want on out phones. For those more familiar with CIQ, how do we disable it?

I'm not certain what about his post you're referring to. So there's a logging test app from 2011, are you saying it can work on the SM-925 or what exactly?
I'm hoping this tread gets some attention, anyone care to weigh in?

Then thanks for the info! I'm wondering why, after all the bad press, they think putting CarrierIQ back in our devices is okay?

The things I don't completely understand is if we're paying full price for this phone, why is still bloated with carrier crap? I understand if the phone was subsidized and we were getting a heavy discount on it.
I feel like buying the unlocked international version is the way to go now that carriers are selling phones full price and that will eliminate half of the crap that we need to clean through
What do you guys think?

If that makes you feel better, than do it
Carriers are more interested in protecting their networks from hackers than they have ever been, so they feel its ok to install software on the phones that are using THEIR network, so that can search out those that are trying their best to take down their networks and cause havoc for their users.
Its a harsh reality of this messed up world we live in, but, I can see why they want to be able to track down those that want to ruin it for all of us.
There are easy ways to freeze this stuff if it really bothers you, but I dont know why so many people are so paranoid of this stuff..Tmobile doesnt care what porno you are watching, or what illegal movies you are downloading, so dont lose any sleep over this, and just freeze/disable it if it bothers you that much
