Well I was going to root my girlfriends phone today, but I cant. Now before you tell me to use a search button, listen.
I tried looking. I've tried every solution I found. Here's what's going on.
I downloaded kies, then connected phone, phone started charging but no detection on windows. I tried a different cable, still nothing.. Uninstalled kies, restarted phone and computer, reinstalled kies and hooked the phone back up. Same deal, charge only but no detection on windows
So I tried another computer, different cable again. Same problem. Charge only, but no detection on windows. I looked at the charging port, no bent, discolored pins. It will charge on an ac charger as well. I have tried everything I know, it won't even detect Odin mode.
Any suggestions?

I think you forgot to install the drivers on computer then it would recognize phone search for guide to root epic 4g touch on xda and Google and check out qbking77 on YouTube links are probably in one of his videos .

I've tried 3 different cables on 3 different computers and it hasn't worked on any of them.. 2 cables are Samsung and 1 was a blackberry cable. All 3 computers are windows XP. Could that be the problem?

Are you plugging the cable into just any USB port?
Computers usually have like 6 or more usb ports... Usually only two of them are the primary. The rest are technically a USB hub.
On a normal desktop tower, you want to plug your phone into one of the USB ports immediately adjacent to the network port. They are usually side by side, Network jack, and 2 usb next to it.
You may have to look up how to clean uninstall the samsung driver, then reinstall it before you ever plug your phone into your computer. Then you want to always plug it in the same spot. USB ports often act like individual devices. Even though the driver is installed, and your phone may work on 1 usb port, moving it to another port, it may fail to recognize it.
This may be a setting on your phone, or it may be a setting on the pc. Also, when mounting and unmounting your phone, make sure you use Windows XP safely remove hardware, or the unmount option from your phone to prevent it from failing to recognize at a later date.
Wow ill have to try that later, thank you for the info.

If that still doesn't work, I rebooted the comp while still in usb storage on my phone, which finaly made it recognize... good luck to you though!

Make sure your USB debugging is off I had to turn it off for some ROM's I don't know why but I did. Also If that don't work go to the market and download "Multi Mount SD-Card Lite" This worked like a charm for me especially the widget, but for the free version you can't have Ad Blocking on.
Same thing happened to my Hero back when I was first learning how to root the thing. Outside of computer and cable problems, it has to be your phone. I have to ask though, is it at least charging when you plug it in?
Whenever I plug my phone in my computer I get USB Unrecognized device. I ahve tried a few different cords and also whenever I plug my phone into my computer my touch screen doesn't work very well.
Please help
Try downloading the epic drivers for conputer
Search aroud for it
Idk where it was

I had a similar problem. If multiple cables do not work, I had to Odin back to stock and bam everything was fine again. This will only work if Odin can see it, which mine did but would not when the phone booted up. Hope this helps.

I had this happen to me with srf 1.2 and its doing it again now, I can't use stock cable for anything other than charging. When I connect to a computer it says the same "unrecognized device" but when I use a thicker blackberry cable everything works fine.

It's the Cable.
I have issues getting my Epic recognized as well, but don't fret.
The stock cable will still work, you just have to give it more chances to recognize.
When you install drivers, they don't always go through on every usb port your laptop/desktop have. some ports will work better, like on-board powered ports.
I assume you know your computer better than anyone else and already know which usb ports never fail you and which ones are a little iffy.
Factors aside, wether you be on xp, vista, or windows seven, or even Windows 8 beta... LOL. Open up device manager.. if your 'unknown device' (your epic) is connected, leave it that way, and go down to the usb ports section of device manager. click down on the arrows and you'll find 'unknown device' that's your epic. Right click, uninstall.
now, do the following.
If you're trying to flash/odin.. make sure your SD card is out. as you want your phone to be recognized for a modem, not a usb massive storage, but if in fact what you're going for is the ability to browse through your phone's sd card with your phone connected, then obviously leave the sd card in.Disconnect the usb cable from your pc's end. Make sure your plug is completely inside your phone's micro-usb port. Now, either try the same port again, or choose a different one, do realize that your computer will have to 'recognize' your phone and install the drivers installed on your computer for each new port you try it on. You'll eventually realize which port works best and get full recognition, just give it a little time and patience and you won't be dissapointed. Old Windows XP takes a little longer for usb recognition than windows vista or snappy windows seven. Cheers and i hope i was of any help to you or anyone else browsing around. =]
can somebody help me. I cant get my drivers to recognize my device. Ive installed the driver i needed. Ive restarted my pc and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.
If you using the stock cable, this may be the issue. A blackberry usb cable works great. You should also try a different usb port on the computer. What os are you running?

I got mine to work by letting Windows Update find and install the drivers. I turned on USB Debugging, conneceted the cable, clicked to connect on the phone, then went into Device Manager in the Control Panel and found Samsung Android under USB and clicked it, then said update drivers and chose from Windows Update. Took like a half hour to get them all.
On my pc I'm using windows vista. I uninstalled driver and restarded my pc and phone and plugged in an HTC cable and installed the driver and it worked. I left debug mode on during that process. Should I have turned it off. Anyways I turn phone off to go into download mode and it doesnt recognize the device. Wth! It says to update and look for update but there isnt and doesnt work. Then I unplug cable and plug cable back in after I rebooted and I get the did not recognize error.

I have been using cables from Amazon basics, no cable issues at all. They even warranty the cable for a year.
Vista is a tough os to get the drivers working just right. If u have access to a win7 or xp x86 comp, you might have better luck. I never could get my win7 x64 working but np on win7 x86. Go figure...

I plugged my phone into my computer today, and noticed that my USB debugging didn't come up on my phone. I'm not sure what happened, I can't figure it out. My computer doesn't recognize my phone and my phone doesn't start running USB debugging. Its checked on my phone but maybe my drivers are screwed up somehow. Anyone got any tips?

usb connection to computer
What is it that you are trying to do? If all you want is to see the phone from windows and transfer files, you want debugging off. USB debugging is for using adb commands, or tools that use them, like for rooting.
If you are sure that it is not software problem with your PC (it worked some time ago, you didn't change anything, etc.), than try to clean USB port with soft tooth brush. The USB can have some problems due to oxidation.
I'm trying to go from AOKP 31 to something newer. But my computer used to show me my phone but now it doesn't do anything.

I just bought a galaxy s2 running stock gb on ebay and whenever I plug it in any pc it only charges. There is no usb notification nor does computer play a sound when the phone is connected. The phone makes a sound and just charges no matter what I do, I have tried usb debugging on/off and nothing. When I go into wifi/connection settings and select usb mode it says to connect a cable when the usb cable is already connected. I have tried many usb cables including the original samsung one.
Did I just buy a defective phone or am I missing something?
You need the drivers, either Google it or wait for someone to post a link, your call.

Try all usb ports as well! Even without the drivers you should still be able to use it as mass storage device

Are you using a data cable and not just a regular charging cable? You still see the option to connect mount the SD card evn without the drivers.

I'm not sure if this works on stock gb buy try going to settings/storage. Then press menu and if another settings option comes up then go there and see if there is an option to mount as mass storage device

Having the same issue, can it be that I am using a backed up ROM? I know that there are times when having a backed up ROM changes your system to R/O instead of R/W

MY PC basically does three quick beeps, like the ones it would make when connecting to the phone.... the only difference is when properly connected it would make one beep. I have 6 USB ports and have used all of them. In Root Explorer it states "Cannot detect SD card" that happened after i clicked on SD card to see what files were there.
I did a fresh flash of a ROM and now I am not having issues connecting to PC.
similar problem
I have the same problem of my gs2 not connecting to the computer. The only difference is that it isn't new, and I've been connecting to the computer using the exact same cord for a while.
I'm not really sure what the problem could be, it was working fine as recently as yesterday
Had the same issue I had to send it in for repairs USB port on the phone was effed up

Install moboro on ur PC, make sure developer options is enabled, and debugging is ticked, moboro will install needed drivers for phone to be seen, check to see if the phone is rooted y downloading root checker from play store, if it is rooted it may be an issue with the rom, try downloading Odin and putting the phone in download mode, Odin should see the device and say "added", if so go to sammobile.com find ur devices newest firmware and DL the file, use odin to flash the firmware on the phone, should solve all issue, u can also use Odin without being rooted too so, if u need more info, links or whatever, just let me know

WARNING
I had the same problem about a month ago. I had sent it to Samsung and they replaced the USB part of my phone. So if nothing works, DON'T PREFORM A FACTORY RESET IF YOU'RE ON STOCK! THAT CAN MAKE YOU STUCK ON A BOOT LOOP! but if you're lucky then everything will work fine. I only say this because it happened to me.
