Hear me out... Gingerbread on GNex? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Has someone made a GB ROM for the gnex? I bet it would be wicked fast and smooth compared to other ROMs with higher Android versions. Is there anything that holds it back from getting GB?

No, Even with its bugs, Kit Kat is much more optimized.
There are probably no drivers for it anyway.

You are not the first one to ask this question. Short answer: no.
Long answer: as of now there exists no known build of GB for gnex from anyone, since there is no blob and driver available from Samsung and TI to build GB on gnex. It will run fast, but not that much comparing to newer Android builds because of the lack of optimization at that time.

Don't forget the fact that 4.1.2 was probably the fastest for the GNexus, then again there's a ton load of optimizations that are needed to be done, then a massive downgrade to the camera drivers and chipset. Besides it would be a waste of time as there are a lot of restrictions and limitations. App support goes down the drain as well, you can kiss goodbye to all those fancy animations or superbly optimized launchers like Nova.
Also the only reason it will be fast is because of the scaling option is really low res compared to Jellybean/ICS.
I'm not sure if you really thought this through but it makes absolutely no sense to do so. It's like buying an i7 with 16GB RAM and high end graphics card... And then you install Windows 95.

You mean Windows XP? Because GB is the windows copy of Android and I'll deal with xp, I like it more than windows 7 &/or 8. But I see what your saying.

Your understanding about the OS is miss leading..
GB is probably 'heavier' on any Android phone due to worst memory management compared to ICS and JB (also depends on the hardware).
For example, my dad's Galaxy Ace 2 running smoother on JB 4.1.2 than on GB. Why? Because JB eat less RAM to run. KitKat supposed to eat lesser. Meanwhile my brother's Optimus One runs at best on ICS (first came out on Eclair, updated to GB officially), but really slow when it run on JB (the hardware won keep up).
BTW, I agree, JB 4.1.2 was the fastest on GNex.

If only they hadn't picked Omap as its chipset, probably it would live to see another day. A year in and the company closes down. I don't know if they tried to save the company thinking adding it on a Google phone would redeem the company, instead the GNexus was one of those poorly advertised phones, where only people who kept up with the Google trend or xda/root wiki knew about the phone and what it was really intended for.

Sense or No Sense? What do you guys prefer...

Same question as in the title, do you prefer to have sense or prefer to get rid? I love sense 4 but do think the amount of ram it uses is a bit on the heavy side...
I'm currently undecided.

i like sense..beautiful UI and just plain better than TW. but still if i see a AOKP rom or cm9 fully stable and working i will be making the jump. cause nothing beats pure google rom at the end of the day. both have their good and bad points. plus if you still like sense you can reduce the ram size it eats up by using rom cleaner
I prefer a vanilla experience, but I'm keeping a sense based ROM on my HOX until I can find a camera app that comes close to the greatness of the sense 4 camera and takes advantage of the hardware.
CM9 on my HOX was fast and snappy, but I don't care for the camera.
I did a bit of DE-Sensing on my own with Titanium by freezing a lot of HTC stuff; basically anything with the weird Sense in it. Greatly improved multitasking, but still not as well as my Nexus.

there you go mate
Guys, I bought a HOX after owning a Samsung Captivate and then a Galaxy S2, so I considered myself a self proclaimed Samsung fanboi. I made the jump because I wanted to taste another brand and I've liked HTC since the Windows Mobile days.
Regarding Sense 4 let me tell you, compared to TW it is simply fantastic. It is so well designed, elegant, simple, love the lockscreen customizations.
You all are correct, the camera app on HOX is that good that I am not leaving sense until something better comes along. I am thinking of installing a Sense based ROM but I am hesitant as I am enjoying the stock experience so much (for now).
For me Sense gets old and ugly pretty quick. It's not worth the memory + cpu resources it consumes :/

[Q] disadvantages of CM9

What is the disadvantages of CM9 ??
Camera quality isn't as good and slower to take photos, interface is a bit laggier than a stripped down stock gingerbread, battery drain can be worse depending on customisations and tweaks, some apps run slower/graphics can be jerkier/Mobo player is buggy (an ICS issue)
Advantages are AOSP interface, higher app compatibility, ability to install application data to the SD card and many more

I think the battery is quite good. Because mine can hold even almost 1 day. You should wait for 3 - 4 cycle charge before you can complaint about the battery issue If you just flashed rom. About the other I can say much because I don't use gb rom very much.
But for me cm9 is good fast smooth and stable for me

I think the strength of cm9 is in its ability to hold large amount of Apps without lagging like stock does.
The one and only thing I can think of is the fact that there are too many different choices you do not know which suits you.

If you want to use GB roms then use RebelROM something like that... simple like GB Stock but more reliable and transparent and it has no complaint.. i use just a month and then join ICS

I used a whole bunch of GB ROMs for the W before eventually settling with CM9 again after thinking it was giving me battery drains since CM9 provided a cleaner and smoother interface also better gaming experience than any of the GB ROMs provided.
GB is alright but compared to ICS and CM9 its not as good if you do alot of gaming since I found even the best GB ROM has more lag than CM9 gaming wise.

[Q] What's the point of using ICS/JB-based roms?

I can't figure it out so maybe someone will help me (using MIUI as example).
What exactly is the benefit of using JB-based MIUI over GB-based MIUI apart from the fact of having the newest thing on the block? I found only TWO minor things:
- good voice recognition of Android 4+ (I don't even know if MIUI has it built in)
- in MIUI JB you can have pattern screenlock as a single lock. There is no way of avoiding double screenlock on GB MIUI.
So is it really worth loosing HALF of the Quadrant score - I get ~950 points in JB MIUI and 1900 in GB MIUI (which I suppose means JB roms are two times slower than GB roms) and some extra space on data partition?
Did you seriously just write that.

Everyone knows benchmarks are worthless in the grand scheme of things. Except for testing new high end phones (even then there not accurate enough.)
GB MIUI is probably a little faster but no were near 2 TIMES faster than JB MIUI.
Though MIUI in general was never that fast anyway
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
In the grand scheme of things we could just use Nokias 3100 and our lives would not be much different.
There is a big difference in benchmark result between different roms on the same phone, so obviously it IS measuring something.
GB MIUI is also twice as fast as GB CM7 on my phone.
I'm running Spazedog ICS and i'm getting 2100pts

I can give you more than that on a froyo rom. It still is a fake score.
- Swyped from my Galaxy Note 2
Aside form arguing whether benchmarks work:
A- Aesthetics, ICS is unbelievably beautiful
B- All the launcher features, Keyboard mouse (if you do some scripting)
C- As mentioned voice recognition is great
D- Upgraded GApps
E- List goes on...its the little things that count
And yes, Spacedog rom for the bravo kicks a**

I think people need to redefine the words 'stable' and 'smooth' as well as 'fast' coz I didn't get those when using ICS or JB (with a tons of bugs that, I think, will not be solved anytime soon).

In my opinion jb is in many ways better than gb, besides the battery life. however I've found the stock roms to be laggy but when you install one of the costum jelly bean roms that problem is out of the way too. So I suggest u upgrade to jelly bean, I think it's really worth it! p.s. next time post your question in Q and A for ace 2 thread, it's there for a reason!
If JB only CM.
So basically you read on our forums that for some people JB lags, for some not, and then decided to open new thread to read the same things once again hoping that maybe now everything magically works fine for everyone? Both sections are full with opinions and threads on every available release of JB, we have also Q and A section to ask such questions there.
Android lags every time. I have LG with Quad Core Tegra 3 and I see lag. Same with any other device. In other case, Lumia 720 is running flawlessly. Why? Not open source and full of ****. In any case, I advise to install ME7 Android 4.1 to Ace II. Better than GB.

I use JB since the first release and I never again had a thought to revert back to GB. Current JB roms are quite stable, so there's no need to stick with GB. Just don't use CM or any other rom which is in alpha stage. Wait for stable release and you'll be okay. And to answer your question - Yes, you should upgrade to JB.
I ´m using JB XE7 since 10 days and it´s working fine ! I update from GB straight via odin and got 624MB memory. For me, i won´t go back to GB!

GB over JB any day for me.
I have flashed all JB release except MF1. All roms were giving too much lag when playing a video (play and then go forward or back and your phone might even become unresponsive) and youtube and facebook videos especially high resolution videos. I have tried Italian Job over MC8 and Kyrillos over MB4 (or MB2?), they were better than stock but not close to how GB plays videos. GB is best for SGA2 in my opinion and experience.

Man, clean RAM sometimes with dedicated Samsung app. I have ME7 and everything fine.
Gb maybe a bit faster but jb is very stable if u install a good custom Rom. Try the italian job rom by mkel91 the nature ux version or kyrillos v8. They are both good but i feel that italian job is more stable.
Plus jb is capable of running a lot of apps that gb can't and don't forget that BBM will only be available for devices with ics and up

i prefer JB
I use CM 10.1 from bangz0r is faster then gingerbread and more stable.

I seriously sit around and wonder about how ridiculously stupid that statement is.
It IS NOT better for Ace II. Most definitely NOT. Curse anyone who utters these words.
GINGERBREAD DOES NOT NATIVELY SUPPORT MULTICORE CPUs!
So people hold your horses and stop saying "We can hardly run JB". The issue in performance isn't in the SoC or RAM, but in the crappy NAND chips. Whether it's JB or GB -- it will be all the same... Except GB will run worse, because it doesn't natively support multicore CPUs... Well in samsung's stock ROM it does (non-natively) -- but it won't in CM at all.
