[Q] GB or JB? - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! I ordered my SGA 2 today and it probably comes with GB, so i was wondering should i update it to JB? Some say JB lags in SGA 2 and others say its better with JB. Could u tell me ur experience with GB and JB in SGA 2? Question is: Should I?

In my opinion jb is in many ways better than gb, besides the battery life. however I've found the stock roms to be laggy but when you install one of the costum jelly bean roms that problem is out of the way too. So I suggest u upgrade to jelly bean, I think it's really worth it! p.s. next time post your question in Q and A for ace 2 thread, it's there for a reason!

If JB only CM.

So basically you read on our forums that for some people JB lags, for some not, and then decided to open new thread to read the same things once again hoping that maybe now everything magically works fine for everyone? Both sections are full with opinions and threads on every available release of JB, we have also Q and A section to ask such questions there.

Android lags every time. I have LG with Quad Core Tegra 3 and I see lag. Same with any other device. In other case, Lumia 720 is running flawlessly. Why? Not open source and full of ****. In any case, I advise to install ME7 Android 4.1 to Ace II. Better than GB.

CM is buggy and luggy)))

I use JB since the first release and I never again had a thought to revert back to GB. Current JB roms are quite stable, so there's no need to stick with GB. Just don't use CM or any other rom which is in alpha stage. Wait for stable release and you'll be okay. And to answer your question - Yes, you should upgrade to JB.

I ´m using JB XE7 since 10 days and it´s working fine ! I update from GB straight via odin and got 624MB memory. For me, i won´t go back to GB!

JB Looks a bit too boring to me... Yes it has better battery use capabilities and 'new' features but for me... ICS is my personal pick. But I would choose GB over JB any day

Cyanogenmod 10 Unofficial by dh.Harald is very good. There are a few Bugs, but if they are no Problem for you, try it.

GB over JB any day for me.
I have flashed all JB release except MF1. All roms were giving too much lag when playing a video (play and then go forward or back and your phone might even become unresponsive) and youtube and facebook videos especially high resolution videos. I have tried Italian Job over MC8 and Kyrillos over MB4 (or MB2?), they were better than stock but not close to how GB plays videos. GB is best for SGA2 in my opinion and experience.

Man, clean RAM sometimes with dedicated Samsung app. I have ME7 and everything fine.

Gb maybe a bit faster but jb is very stable if u install a good custom Rom. Try the italian job rom by mkel91 the nature ux version or kyrillos v8. They are both good but i feel that italian job is more stable.
Plus jb is capable of running a lot of apps that gb can't and don't forget that BBM will only be available for devices with ics and up
If u need any help installing roms just ask

So my own experience is
I had installed GB and was happy gaming Performance was ok but for exemple blitz bridgade lagged a lot at low grafics on Gb then i went to mb4 and mf1 and i just can say AMAZING my phone is much quicker and the gaming Performance is very good for exemple mc4 mission 1 crashed on Gb but works on jB same with gangster vegas so i just love mf1 ; D

Cause we use 3.0.x kernel which is more better than gb kernel
Look at benchmark score (quadrant)

I do believe Jelly Bean is better, it may be slightly slower at some stages but the touchwiz UI is so much clearer and more advanced. I bought my SGA 2 back in november with GB, and got impatient with o2 not giving an update for it so I decided to root it and get Bagnz0r's sakura droid project on it. I prefer the AOSP look overall

i prefer JB

I use CM 10.1 from bangz0r is faster then gingerbread and more stable.

Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda premium
GB is the best for gaming
If you are a hard gamer i suggest a gaming rom
There is two gaming rom avalaible in the android development section
1- Simplified GB with SIII look
2- Stock Gaming XXLM8
If u want to have a nice look for a gb rom and play games i recommend the first one
If you just want to play game and the look doesn't matter with you
AND if you want overclock the phone, rom n.2 is recommeded
Press thanks if it helped.
ICS just because its faster and smoother.
I tried games on the GB ROMs but they always have some lag but when tested on CM9 it runs smoothly without the lag that was present in the GB ROMs.

I tested all of the customized GB ROMs and the lag was there each time and it was alot more noticeable than when using CM9. I don't know what game you were trying to play but all the ones I tried works perfectly even the big ones like Chaos Rings.

For me, iam running my own rom.
it's also on the android development section
and i havn't faced any problems with it, but CM9 was buggy for me. it's interface is powerful. i know
but for GAMING, GB is still better.
BY THE WAY. I have tested Gangstar RIO on CM9 and GB
on CM9 it was very laggy, freezes alot even when Swapping RAM + Chainfire 3D
on GB it rarely lagges without Swapping RAM or even Chainfire 3D

Will Lag like Hell on CM9 even after Swap RAM + Chainfire 3D
while on GB it have very small lag without any swap of ram or even Chainfire 3D
also the reason i say GB is better than CM9 in gaming is the RAM Usage of the system
I on my Custom ROM, i can get only 140mb used by system, so i have nearly 210mb free ram
on CM9 i can't even get 150 free ram

I don't make any ROMs or any other things for Android since i'm mostly a designer but even I know the basics of this stuff and why I will continue to say that CM9 the pure CM9 not the ROMs based on it is better than any GB ROM that can be developed now but I would be happy to take that challenge to see the limits of the ROM.

[Q] What's the point of using ICS/JB-based roms?

I can't figure it out so maybe someone will help me (using MIUI as example).
What exactly is the benefit of using JB-based MIUI over GB-based MIUI apart from the fact of having the newest thing on the block? I found only TWO minor things:
- good voice recognition of Android 4+ (I don't even know if MIUI has it built in)
- in MIUI JB you can have pattern screenlock as a single lock. There is no way of avoiding double screenlock on GB MIUI.
So is it really worth loosing HALF of the Quadrant score - I get ~950 points in JB MIUI and 1900 in GB MIUI (which I suppose means JB roms are two times slower than GB roms) and some extra space on data partition?
Did you seriously just write that.

Everyone knows benchmarks are worthless in the grand scheme of things. Except for testing new high end phones (even then there not accurate enough.)
GB MIUI is probably a little faster but no were near 2 TIMES faster than JB MIUI.
Though MIUI in general was never that fast anyway
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
In the grand scheme of things we could just use Nokias 3100 and our lives would not be much different.
There is a big difference in benchmark result between different roms on the same phone, so obviously it IS measuring something.
GB MIUI is also twice as fast as GB CM7 on my phone.
I'm running Spazedog ICS and i'm getting 2100pts
However, SPazedog is a very stable ROM

I can give you more than that on a froyo rom. It still is a fake score.
- Swyped from my Galaxy Note 2
Aside form arguing whether benchmarks work:
A- Aesthetics, ICS is unbelievably beautiful
B- All the launcher features, Keyboard mouse (if you do some scripting)
C- As mentioned voice recognition is great
D- Upgraded GApps
E- List goes on...its the little things that count
And yes, Spacedog rom for the bravo kicks a**

Have you never tried a ICS or JB ROM? Just make a backup and flash one. There are really good smooth/stable ICS ROMs, and JB with butter is really tasty, though still some bugs. Not slow at all though. Give it a go.

I think people need to redefine the words 'stable' and 'smooth' as well as 'fast' coz I didn't get those when using ICS or JB (with a tons of bugs that, I think, will not be solved anytime soon).

Gingerbread over ICS/JB ROMs?

At the risk of getting flamed, how come the most popular ROM (MildWild) is based on GB? I myself have a ICS/JB and the performance and stability is far above that of GB when it came to my SGS2 custom ROM experience. I'm going to guess that it's simply the best ROM?
For me it was simple, jb looks great, and performed quickly on my phone, but not everything worked. Using a 3rd party app for video recording was a simple solution for one problem that I had, but BBC iPlayer didn't work for me, add a few other niggles and it just wasn't worth it for me, though I still have a nandroid backup if I feel like a quick look again

I think the most common problem is the lack of internal memory and ram that keeps Desire Users from updating to ICS/JB since most of the bigger apps need much storage and run instable.
Tried ICS too and went back to my CM7.
If you're looking for a ICS/JB ROM, go for VJ's CM10.1 port. Pretty decent
Yes the VJ ROM is very nice and fast but I love gaming and the ROM doesn't run hard games ... So for now I'm using Alex 1.8 ROM modded , nice and stable but not that fast as VJ Rom but I can bare with that for now .. when in VJ's ROM hard games will run , I will go back on it

No, Even with its bugs, Kit Kat is much more optimized.
There are probably no drivers for it anyway.
You are not the first one to ask this question. Short answer: no.
Long answer: as of now there exists no known build of GB for gnex from anyone, since there is no blob and driver available from Samsung and TI to build GB on gnex. It will run fast, but not that much comparing to newer Android builds because of the lack of optimization at that time.
Don't forget the fact that 4.1.2 was probably the fastest for the GNexus, then again there's a ton load of optimizations that are needed to be done, then a massive downgrade to the camera drivers and chipset. Besides it would be a waste of time as there are a lot of restrictions and limitations. App support goes down the drain as well, you can kiss goodbye to all those fancy animations or superbly optimized launchers like Nova.
Also the only reason it will be fast is because of the scaling option is really low res compared to Jellybean/ICS.
I'm not sure if you really thought this through but it makes absolutely no sense to do so. It's like buying an i7 with 16GB RAM and high end graphics card... And then you install Windows 95.

Your understanding about the OS is miss leading..
GB is probably 'heavier' on any Android phone due to worst memory management compared to ICS and JB (also depends on the hardware).
For example, my dad's Galaxy Ace 2 running smoother on JB 4.1.2 than on GB. Why? Because JB eat less RAM to run. KitKat supposed to eat lesser. Meanwhile my brother's Optimus One runs at best on ICS (first came out on Eclair, updated to GB officially), but really slow when it run on JB (the hardware won keep up).
BTW, I agree, JB 4.1.2 was the fastest on GNex.

If only they hadn't picked Omap as its chipset, probably it would live to see another day. A year in and the company closes down. I don't know if they tried to save the company thinking adding it on a Google phone would redeem the company, instead the GNexus was one of those poorly advertised phones, where only people who kept up with the Google trend or xda/root wiki knew about the phone and what it was really intended for.
