I feel like T-Mobile is throttling my YouTube app.
I cannot fully watch any video without stutters, pauses, buffering via the YouTube app.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Apparently, there are evidences that TMO is throttling any downloads with file size larger than 30MB. This also explains why downloading large app on Google Play also takes forever.
Nah no issues here. That is pretty odd though. Is it in a certain area or does it not matter where you are?

It's happening pretty much anywhere.
I have stock rom and rooted. No other mod.
Weird.

I have better access to Youtube via T-Mobile than when I am using WiFi due to problems via Cox right now. Almost never have any issues when using 4G.
i feel like im having the same issues... stock here and rooted.. Youtube just is buffering like crazy and i have lte with 2 bars
No issues here, but T-Mobile's throttling my app store downloads for sure. LTE is super quick up to 80mbs or so and then slows to a crawl
Could try clearing the cache for the youtube app. Is the problem on Wifi as well?
Try a reboot. It was happening to me and a reboot fixed it for a few days. Then repeat if buffering occurs. Its weird

Tmobile is definitely throttling us in certain situations. It is very concerning that they are doing this.
I suggest every one send John Legere a twitter message asking him what is going on.

Wow, yes, my app store seems to be throttling as well.
Similar experience. It would shoot up to supersonic speed and then throttle down to dripping molasses.
I have $70 Prepaid. There shouldn't be any throttling.

I recommend also filing a FCC complaint as they'll ultimately forward your issue to some high up in customer relations at T-Mobile. Carriers hate FCC complaints and do what they can to resolve them.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Are those with these issues mostly on prepaid or postpaid? It seems to be affecting prepaid mostly.
T-Mobile is definitely throttling it takes a lot longer to download apps from the Play Store.I'm sure they'll say that they only offer up to high speeds and not continuous. With all the new customers they can't handle the traffic.
I don't very often watch Youtube but I tried it out just now. Sure enough can't make it through a single video. Almost everytime the video "pre-loads" (based on the progressbar) about the first minute of the video, then stalls out.
The whole reason I got the $70 PrePaid, rather than the $50, is for the non-throttling.
From all indications, I'm being throttled
That's no cool T-MO.
Are you sure smart pause isnt on and just not working properly? I didn't realize I had it on and that was causing issues for me.

Yeah you would think Verizon would make their flagship app work with their flagship phone. But hey, at least they didn't screw up the release date of the 15th...
The NFL Mobile app doesn't work on the G-Nex? What the hell am I paying $10 a month for?
My 3 week old RAZR is sitting on eBay and it does something very important that the G-Nex doesn't. This is sad news.
Well at least my wife has a RAZR. I can watch it on hers.
I agree. This really pisses me off. I work out of town all the time and cant catch up on my NFL. I'm going to reactivate my Bionic and maybe return the Nexus if they don't resolve this quick. There are a bunch off apps that don't run or constantly crash. Verizon visual voicemail keeps crashing in the background also.

I guess it is a VZW "sponsored" app, so they limit to their phones and dropped the ball in having the developers prep it for SGN or ICS.

It's my understanding that -all- 4G phones, of which the G-Nex is included, are supposed to be able to use NFL Mobile for free. FWIW.

NFL app (this one lets you view scores and highlights and news and such)
so is there a different app you're trying to use?
ps: all apps from NFL enterprises.
The APP we use in the states lets us watch the games live, We get full covereage of the NFL network games (thursday, saturday, sunday, monday night games) and for the bulk of them we use Red Zone to let us watch all the good plays while they happen.
Any chance of being able to maybe.... tinker.... with the ini? maybe trick it into thinking that its something different or maybe its just an issue of screen size again. Similar to swypes issue?

It is a bummer that this doesn't work, but there seems to be a little self-contradiction here - a lot of complaints that Verizon GNex isn't a stock google phone, and then more complaints that they didn't do more to change the phone so that it would work with Verizon sponsored apps.

Basically unless you have access to wifi streaming music and video is out. This makes it impossible for me to stream music while i work, so it is back to the radio. This is going to continue until people tell the cell phone companies no this is not acceptable.
I have the 5GB plan and I've been doing a LOT with it; Downloading HD Videos off of youtube, downloading music, Web browsing, streaming youtube videos, tethering to my computer to play online games (which is smooth and lag-free), and I've used up about 1.6GB. I can't even imagine using 10GB in that small of a time frame.
You used 10GB just from streaming Netflix once and using Pandora everyday since the 8th of December? That number sounds very high. Do you have some sort of data manager that tracks how much data (in MB) your apps are using up?
I do agree that with these blazing speeds, it is easy to go nuts and just go on a rampage. I know that if I didn't restrain myself sometimes, I could use up my data cap in a couple days. Kind of a bummer that we can't truly enjoy the phone without having to worry about being throttled =/

The only thing that uses more data is running speedtests or having higher quality music/video streams (and higher speedtest download files) because your connection is faster.
Solution: stop streaming so much, use WiFi more. They can't do away with caps because your speeds wouldn't be fast anymore.. duh.

No it doesn't. You are mistaken.. It only adds to your current data if you go up in limit, it doesn't "restart" your mb counter. They cannot reset it at all.

That's cool if you "worked" there. But your knowledge is incorrect. There's no way a rep or supervisor can reset data. They can add to it if you change your data plan to a higher cap, but they can't reset it. And if you do go up and change back before the month is up, you drop back to your old cap and remain at the same usage.
I know this for a fact. Trust me.

I just figured this out myself so thought share my experience. I haven't seen a thread similar so if there is one calm down.
Basically what I noticed was here in Denver where I live the app would choose the nearest server (Comcast) for here. I was only getting around 7 megs down and couldn't figure out why my numbers were so much slower than others around the country. For whatever reason I decided to change servers to one about a 100 miles down the road and for whatever reason that made an insane difference. I chose the one in Woodland Park (Peak Internet) and started getting in the low 40's for download speeds.
I guess the moral of the story is if you feel your getting inadequate dl speeds switch servers and see what happens.

That is to be expected I guess.
I did find another really strange issue today. When I run speedtest on the phone, I was getting around 8Mbps (1 bar of 4G), but when I enabled WiFi tether on my phone, connected my laptop to the GN's WiFi, and ran speedtest locally on my laptop, the recorded speed was 12-13Mbps
I was totally not expecting that as I would have thought it would be lower. I repeated this multiple times and made sure that both when running speedtest.net on the phone or on my laptop, the same server was selected. Seems like the speedtest.net app on the GN might be bogging it down and making it record lower speeds than what it is actually capable of?

Well I've had mine since the 30th, and I think I'm like most in saying I've experienced no real issues. An update came out within a week that improved performance among other things. Every phone as bad copies, and it's luck of the draw if you do get a bad one. Fact is, people are 100x more likely to leave a review of something is wrong verses everything being OK. So I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Nor do I think they've changed their production setup. If anything because of continued global demand, production line employees/suppliers may be under more pressure now and likely to make oversights.

I was one of the few (many) that got the phone from the original batch on launch day and had problems with the wifi. After much research, attempting every "fix" I could find and my own trial-and-error I determined that it had to be a power-related hardware fault within the Broadcom chip so I sent the phone to Samsung. They either couldn't fix it or didn't even try because they've shipped me a new phone. Hopefully it'll be from the newer batches - I'll know Tuesday and will update with results!
I dipped my entire phone into glitter then pissed on it. And it still works flawlessly.
...
I got my device on launch as well, so far the only thing that has been bugging me is the lag due to getting the T-Mobile My Account app keeps FC'ing. I'm thinking if I should root the phone and get rid of a few stuff or just flash a new rom altogether. Still waiting on when the Google S4 will come into play. I still have time until the Google version comes out that I can return my phone =)

the wife had the same issue - i uninstalled the "my account" updates from inside the play store - and then there was no upgrades the next time i went into the play store. works much better with the "factory version"

Hey folks!
I just got a warning letter from Sprint. They're threatening to disable service for tethering. I did a bit of searching on the forums and have seen similar threads, but thought I'd contribute so others wouldn't get flagged like I did.
I'm using CM9 Beta 1 (older version), with FL24 modem, and using WiFi Tether app to tether. Data usage for September so far has been 4.66 GB. Specific usage for data (from tethering) primarily involves web browsing, Youtube videos, Hulu, and playing Guild Wars 2 x3/week for less than 3 hour sessions each.
I'm not sure what all they can or cannot track, so I will try a newer CM9 or CM10 and use wired tethering instead to see if that helps. If I get terminated, oh well. After surcharges and tax, I'm paying 160 for two lines. The other phone on the line is a basic flip phone, of all things. I use tethering since it's more ideal than the campus wifi here.
If push comes to shove and I get terminated, I'll check out T-Mobile since their signal is strong-ish in this area. Not sure what factor/s caused the flag letter, but just posting the info so you could perhaps avoid it!
Good luck folks! :highfive:
They will be able to tell that you are tethering, it doesn't matter what ROM you are using or how you are tethering.
All of the information is in the packets that are being sent on the network. Everything from what browser you are using, operating system, which version of flash/java you have installed, etc...

Thanks for the info. From all the searching I've done across several different forums, this seems to be a consistent but very RANDOM problem (the letter). I wonder if they just do random checks on random people?? I saw a guy get a flag letter for using 100+GB, but I'm below 5GB. Is anyone else getting this letter?

The real question is what they are looking at. Truth is we probably won't know and things change.
Just looking at user agent strings in post and get requests will result in false positives when a user has their android browser using a Windows Chrome user agent string. Its not terribly intensive to spot check traffic on port 80 to see whats going on but probably not the most efficient or fool proof way. Especially when the heavier users of the network are not just casually using a web browser.
Desktop Youtube and Hulu are likely to raise flags. Even the most passive of monitoring will catch these 2. When a tower experiences any amount of unusual congestion someone is likely to take a look at why and see something usual triggers won't notify on. More active solutions are likely to notice an account without tethering connecting to a known game server IP on a known port. Not so much a problem with say hosted FPS servers more of a problem with MMO's.
If they know exactly what they want to look for its very easy to put an automated solution in place. They don't always know what a user is doing on the network and spot checks during unusual congestion will turn things up. All from network administration point of view less of an accurate carrier view though.
Hey guys an update on what I did.
I just got back and found an OK deal. I'm not sure what you guys were paying for Sprint, but I was paying (after taxes and surcharges) 160/mo. for two lines, unlimited data + 2k non cell-to-cell mins and unlimited everything else. I ended up going T-Mobile and it's looking like the bill will be around 130/mo for 3, not 2 lines. One will have unlimited data, the other two are basic flip phones. Everything else is unlimited.
After bugging the living crap out of the representative and asking repeatedly throughout the sales process, it seems like they have a more flexible, less technical data plan. If this is not true, I'll necro this thread sometime to let everyone know.
Although the 130/mo for 3 lines looks good on paper, I did have to put down (after taxes) $430 for the three phones (GS-4, x2 basic flip phones) - not a pretty amount. After bugging them about how much it cost, they at least gave me a zagg screen protector and some crappy.. body armor? body guard? phone case. Not bad.
I mentioned my usage with tethering in the original post. Should things go sour the same way it did with Sprint, I'll update this thread and let everyone know what happened in detail. Supposedly the rep at the store was an avid user for tethering as well, though he only hinted it, telling me there's little for me to worry from his 'personal' experience.
On another note, I did have an incident with Sprint in the past. My phone was evidently set on automatic connection and Sprint literally kicked my phone off the plan for something they called 'excessive roaming'. They claimed they sent me a warning letter beforehand.. and I'm sure they did. My desk is a mess. The guy over at T-Mobile told me roaming was truly unlimited, but I won't take my chances just in case.
Data speed differences in the Denver Metropolitan area are significant. Speed Test shows around 1.5mbps DL Sprint WiMax, 8.16mbps DL T-Mobile "LTE" (Someone told me T-Mobile LTE isn't 'real' LTE. Not sure on this). 10 tests each were done and averaged. 5 tests indoors, 5 tests outdoors.
Thanks for the responses/input - it helped me make my decision. This forum has always been nothing short of awesome. :good:
