Faster 4G = being throttled quicker! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Dam just got my galaxy s2 on the 8th and i'm already being throttled! got the 10GB data plan too. At 11GB ;(.that's from using Netflix once and steaming Pandora Radio, daily use! Not to crazy! Really wish they would do away with the data throttling. I mean come on! These devices use alot of data! One thing I like about Sprint! No slow down or charges for using alot of data! With faster speeds.brings faster slow down! Total BS!

Basically unless you have access to wifi streaming music and video is out. This makes it impossible for me to stream music while i work, so it is back to the radio. This is going to continue until people tell the cell phone companies no this is not acceptable.

I have the 5GB plan and I've been doing a LOT with it; Downloading HD Videos off of youtube, downloading music, Web browsing, streaming youtube videos, tethering to my computer to play online games (which is smooth and lag-free), and I've used up about 1.6GB. I can't even imagine using 10GB in that small of a time frame.
You used 10GB just from streaming Netflix once and using Pandora everyday since the 8th of December? That number sounds very high. Do you have some sort of data manager that tracks how much data (in MB) your apps are using up?
I do agree that with these blazing speeds, it is easy to go nuts and just go on a rampage. I know that if I didn't restrain myself sometimes, I could use up my data cap in a couple days. Kind of a bummer that we can't truly enjoy the phone without having to worry about being throttled =/

The only thing that uses more data is running speedtests or having higher quality music/video streams (and higher speedtest download files) because your connection is faster.
Solution: stop streaming so much, use WiFi more. They can't do away with caps because your speeds wouldn't be fast anymore.. duh.

...wow u must have watch alot of pron...i got the same plan, and i'm at 8 gigs, and i been letting people at work using my wifi hotspot to do youtube and surfing around, i use it to download stuff (pron) too and it only at 8 gigs...check ur widget or something...jeez

I guarantee that if you stop using netflix you'll be fine.. I mean Effin a bro, a movie is likely to be around a gig in size, what do you expect lol

Dude how the hell do you use all that data I have 5gig plan and use it alot and never break 4gigs I mean I know you're streaming ****. But damn! Use wifi when you're at the house!

Last month was my first with the GS2, used about 11GB (10,980 megabytes). Mainly with Netflix daily at the gym, google music and ROM downloading. It's just so hard to do wifi when it's slower then the network.

Meh.. I doubt high data users consist of more than 5 percent of wireless customers. Plus if it's not really unlimited they shouldn't be a ***** and mislead us like that. I was sooo pissed the day I found out about throttling

You guys are lucky... you know when your going to get throttled, I don't. I only know when I get the Top 5% text.
And you also feel my pain, LTE is like 3x faster (I have 24/3 at home, LTE usually gets around 45/60 down and 15 up), I download all the time on LTE.
I hate having to be stingy about data usage.

RESOLUTION FOR THIS? If you change your data plan after 2 hours it restarts you MB counter.
Call, and ask to be switched to the 10gb BB plan [they future date if you downsize], wait 2 hours, call and swap back to android :x

No it doesn't. You are mistaken.. It only adds to your current data if you go up in limit, it doesn't "restart" your mb counter. They cannot reset it at all.

That's cool if you "worked" there. But your knowledge is incorrect. There's no way a rep or supervisor can reset data. They can add to it if you change your data plan to a higher cap, but they can't reset it. And if you do go up and change back before the month is up, you drop back to your old cap and remain at the same usage.
I know this for a fact. Trust me.

Excruciatingly slow download speeds

For the past two days or so my download speed has been bottomed out. So tonight I decided to download speed test, download took 15min with full bars at 3g, and give it a run. When I went to choose what server I wanted I noticed that there were 3-4 new servers from the last time I ran speed test about a month ago.
So I guess my question is, would new towers in the area possible affect dl speed of verizon is just getting these up, or is it possible that my data is being throttled. I do watch ALOT of movies online through my phone as it is my only source of entertainment for the time being.
Any help, advice, or input in general would be appreciated. Also if my data is being throttled would changing roms help out? I don't really know, just a thought. If this subject has been covered I apologize as it takes quite a long time to do anything over the Internet right now.

The lower the number the better, as for the adding new towers statement, I believe your confused, there was a recent update of the speed test app, which added more locations to transmit the data to, to possibly get a more accurate measurement or ping time I'm guessing, its in the what's new description when you download the app. Don't know bout the throttling thing though, I have asked a bandwidth question and no one would or could answer and I can make educated guesses as good as the next but I don't really know how that works, sorry bud, hope this cleared up some confusion about the whole adding new towers thing though...

2GB is way too low of a cap before throttling kick in, especially if you have unlimited data plan, 4GB is more like it. lol
So what that article is saying is that if I enter an area covered by different towers my speed should go back to normal? Right now I'm at work in the middle of the desert close to the Mexican border and here is my latest score with 1 bar 3g

How's the data usage with Google Music app? (Since GN has 16GB/no support for ext SD)

Hi,
I'm on the fence of buying a Nexus Galaxy and been researching here and there. This one thing I haven't had experience with before and could not find clear answers searching here and there.
What kind of data usage should I expect If got the GN and used Google Music to save my collection on the cloud and play it over 3g/4g data? I have the 2GB/Mo plan from AT&T.
Well, I listen to a lot of musical genres and have a large collection of MP3s (not MPfree's!).
I never tried the Google Music service since I have a 16GB Atrix 4G with 32GB SD card on to carry "some" of my collection with me always.
*I read a lot posts online by people who are hesitating to buy the GN because of the limitation to 16GB only. I know cloud services are being pushed harder and I'm surprised myself that after I thought of everything and the google music solution to my music collection, 16GB can do! But network data has costs around it, y'know.
I think it's would a nice advertisement/complimentary if Verizon (or other carriers later) would give their GN customers a special offer/discount on data plans considering the nature of the device.
Ah, don't forget my question mates. Your opinion/experience with data usage and Google Music.
Thank you
I don't use Google Music for streaming. Whatever I have is on my phone (not much though). But I can tell you this, if you have a lot of music stored on Google Music (online) then expect to see some high data usage. I have not used any music that is stored by Google (when you select some random genres of music at the time of setting up your account) but my data usage on Google Music player still shows 211 mb used ... I guess that's for syncing or caching all the music on my phone. So atleast initially you will see high data usage and not so much afterwards. My 2 cents ... I hope somebody with more experience would give us real information.

I wouldnt recommend streaming unless you still have an unlimited data plan. Period. Streaming music adds up quick.

I use it quite a bit, but I have an unlimited plan. That said, I have never gone over 2GB on my bill. Mostly because I use wifi when I can.
Based on my experience, listening to an album can use anywhere between 30-60mb depending on quality and length.
Google music also caches the album you listen to. Which is nice when you listen to it again it won't be streaming.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
ok, so i dont own the nexus yet, still 1.5 days from possession. but i use google music extensively on my captivate. i have a 16gb phone with 16 gb sdcard, but i kinda like to segregate my music, so i have some on my phone, some on amazon and some on google. i listen to google everyday while commuting to work for 1-1.5hrs, with highest quality option turned on, and everyday my usage is around 50-60mb.i go to work 21-22 days, so its more or less 1gb for google music. i am also on att 2gb plan, before google music i used ~1.1gb per month(used pandora a lot), right now i use 1.6gb.
So yeah, be it pandora, amazon, slacker, or google i use 800-1gb on music every month.
Well, I think we can calculate it.
In the worst case you'd have a 320kbps MP3. When you convert from bits to bytes (by dividing by 8) you get 40kBps.
That means that every minute of music you'll listen to will take use 2.4MB (2400kBps = 40kBps x 60 seconds).
On your 2GB plan, that lets you listen to about 833 minutes of music (or 13 hours straight, or 160 five-minute songs).
That's the worst case which I think you'd only run into if a) you turn on the option in the Music app that forces high quality and b) the song you've stored on Google music is 320kbps.
I hope that logic works out.
Another thing to think about, if you put 6-8GBs of you fav music on the phone, you'd still have lots of space on the phone and significantly reduce the data usage.
BTW....I'm facing the same struggle in my decision on the GN....but I think I may have just help myself decide. LOL

easy for you to say in the great white north is $80+ for only 2GB....
I don't think you will use up all 16GB storage other than musics. And how large are your total music collections? Why don't you open wifi and cache all or most favorite music down on GN so you won't be stream when you listen to them. And if you really run out of space, google music will free up some for you without any problem.

? About data/tethering

Hey guys, just wondering how much data would be acceptable for tethering use to my tablet. I know sprint is unlimited data but can't I get kicked off if they find out I'm tethering illegally or whatever by using to much data? Just wondering because I used about 2 gigs in just about 4 days tethering so I don't want to use too much over the next month and get my whole family kicked off the network. Thanks.

Between Slacker, youtube, nav, netflix, and all the other things I've started using since I got my E4GT in November, I started burning through an average of 5 gigs a month just in on-phone use.
They can't differentiate between on-phone and 'non-sanctioned' tethered usage except when you use a truly unrealistic volume of data. The guy who burned 50 gigs downloading torrents or whatever is an idiot because that is OBVIOUSLY tethered usage. People like him are the ones that are going to ruin it for all of us. People like him will be to blame when Sprint drops unlimited on-phone.

Thanks for the reply but yea I was just worried about using too much data and getting my fam kicked off sprint. I used 500 mb today alone tethering to my tablet so I was curious what sort of limit i should stop myself at. Being on the ICS leaks, I put the data limit using the built in settings app for 10 gigs. Do you think that would be too much even?

NO, I have hit 10 several times with just my phone.
I agree, 10 wouldn't be out of the question given the type of data-burning apps we have at our leisure. It would be at the high end, but absolutely reasonable.
On 3g I hit 8gb on 4g I hit 7gb and that's since I found out about foxfi no root required just download and run it its a free tethering app

I would not worry about it on a tablet , but tethered to a xbox or laptop etc they can tell the difference in your usage so go easy on said devices if you use them tethered ..

Here's how to bypass that. Buy a Blackberry, activate it on your account (this will switch your data type in T-Mobile's system and effectively re-zero it), then after 24 hours, change back to your Android, and bang, you're back at a fresh start. Don't forget to return the Blackberry. You can do it sooner than 24 hours, just need to change out the phone in their system. I wait 24 hours so as not to raise suspicion.
Works.
Questions go in the Q&A section

[Flamebait?] anyone here hate their S III?

So I've had my phone for a month now and I'm really not impressed. Here's why:
*lags . For having 2x the RAM of my old mytouch 4g and a dual core processor this thing constantly freezes and has large amounts of delay when typing (sometimes it takes a sentence to catch up) and Theres usually 450-1.
2 gb of free memory. My mytouch with a ics ROM is just fine(and I use a 7 month old ROM that was one of the orignal ics roms).
* battery. This thing is a complete pig! I can drain through 80% of a charge in under six hours (once under four). I don't watch movies on it. Just texting and facebook.
*reception and data speeds. I don't know whats up with this thing but my old phone and my roommates s II have perfect signal with the exact same tmobile plan. My old phone will do a speedtest at 4002kbps and my roommates will kiss 5500. My S3? 2300 on a good day. Usually 1500kbps. Both of the other phones in the apartment have 4 or 5 bars, I'm lucky to have two. Even if I get up to three or four bars (standing on the roof) calls are always distorted and often times drop. My phone oftentimes will say I have 4g service but refuses to even try to load a webpage or sign into Skype until I restart it.
I have called tmobile several times (and even went in store) and they say its working as intended. I've NEVER had these types of problems on my old phone, and my old one was abused.
Seriously not happy right now. Just got this phone a month ago today and i so regret it. im not paying $90 a month for 1/4 the service i got out of my old phone for $30. I'm past the "buyers remorse" time. Its not really remorse when the **** doesn't work and you refuse to fix it.
I'm looking at canceling my service and eating the $200 etf fee.
Looking at just getting rid of this curse and going back to my old phone and the $30 plan. (or an iphone. I played with my friends and hers is really snappy and.... RELIABLE.
What a crock of ****.
Tl;Dr I hate my phone, and tmobile refuses to make it work right.

Get an iphone if you're complaining about the Samsung Galaxy S 3 performances which blows any phone out in the market right now with the exception of the Galaxy Note 2 which is almost in par with.

I switched from an iPhone 4s to the SIII and I'm never going back.
Have you tried a custom rom? I wasn't completely happy until I moved to CM10 and from what I have seen of CM10.1 (JB4.2) things are only getting better.

I'm sorry you got stuck with a dud. My SG3 is miles ahead of my Glacier on every count. I would exchange it for another. When you get a fully functional SG3, there won't be a lot to complain about.

Seems like you got a bad device dude. It happens. Chill the ... out.
My battery lasts a good ten hours with heavy use. The thing is fast as hell. Go complain to T-Mobile. ***** and rant to them. Eventually they may replace it.

Are you guys all on the same carrier in regards to reception ? Did you switch carriers ? Are you using a metal case / bumper ? What plan do you have ?
The S3 lasts about ~4 hours of screen on time - it doesn't matter really if that 4 hours occurs over 6 or 18 hours - and GPS and other app settings can drain the battery incredibly quickly on any phone. I'd check out BetterBatteryStats or the like, see if there's something unusual.
You're not going to personally injure anyone here by getting an iPhone. Replace this one if you want or figure out what's wrong. Do what you want, it's not really a big deal - it's your money and what works for you.

We're on the exact same tmobile plan. My roommate has a gel case and. I have an otterbox.
We all have 500 minutes, unlimited texting and 2gb 4g data. I keep the GPS and wifi and nfc off. I also keep the screen at the lowest possible brightness.

When most users say this phone is fast reliable and gets good speeds means something might be wrong with yours. Try rooting If you haven't. Or odin stock again.

My only real issue with it is with Samsung. The whole mutiple carriers / models damages the moding community and forces us to have unstable roms if we want to use anything custom.
This is one reason I like what Google is doing with the nexus devices which are more pure, one device per multiple carriers and have full access and I am waiting till Samsung gets forced to open up.
I've never had lag... Stock or rooted
Battery lasts me 16 hrs a day (which is pretty good when using 4-5 hrs of screen time). How much more do u need if you sleep 5-8 hrs per night.
And data speeds...
The nexus 4 isn't even better than the galaxy nexus IMO... And its def not as good as the sgs3 which did win phone of the year (if that matters).
If u don't like it, get a new phone. Pretty simple

I love my s3 on tmobile. No lag at all.

I gotra say. Coming from a different phone changes your perspective. I had the gnex before this phone for almost a year and this phone in terms of development does not compare at all. Not bashing the phone but there are times when I regret selling that thing to come here. Overall like the stock features but there is some slight lag. Blame Twiz for that.

I like mine. It's a little rough around the edges out of the box, but it can be squared away quite nicely.
Skype does have issues. After it says "signed in" go back to the app icon and open it. Do it a few times and you should get passed the circle spinny thing. Also v3 is horrible. Use 2.9.
I love/hate the phone. There's good and bad.
I actually went from the myTouch4G to the s3 and it was a quantum leap mate.
That wasn't counting until I rooted and flashed my phone with the PacMan ROM.
It works beautifully. I can make the battery get 8 hours of full smashmouth Youtube videos which isn't that bad.
Tips, its most likely the widgets or programs you have loaded. I had to learn how to live through phones like the G1 so I was used to using the kill all apps switch before I turned off my phone.
The s3 doesn't have that problem as much, but if you can remember, it extends battery life to do so. And get JuiceDefender.
It only keeps your network on while your screen is awake.
I love my phone. Just tweak.
It's like getting a Pokemon.
All are the same.
Some have issues.
But in the end, if you feed it enough glitches, you'll beat the League with it.
wow seems like many people here came from the MyTouch 4G huh lol

If something is wrong with his phone, rooting will not fix it. If something is wrong, I'd suggest a hard reset first.
I'm just sayin!
Yup hard reset or exchange phone. Just got this beast and i love it. Barely noticeable lag sometimes, ( in SMS app i have over 25k messages). And battery life is amazing for me even when not in coverage area. Also data speeds are faster than Wi-Fi on cable Internet

I'm curious to how the OP thought the battery life and lag was normal on this new, flagship phone?
After all the videos and testimonials about it on the net, wouldn't it eventually start to nag at the back of your mind that something was likely wrong with your specific phone?
Call T-Mobile and request a new phone.
