For the past two days or so my download speed has been bottomed out. So tonight I decided to download speed test, download took 15min with full bars at 3g, and give it a run. When I went to choose what server I wanted I noticed that there were 3-4 new servers from the last time I ran speed test about a month ago.
So I guess my question is, would new towers in the area possible affect dl speed of verizon is just getting these up, or is it possible that my data is being throttled. I do watch ALOT of movies online through my phone as it is my only source of entertainment for the time being.
Any help, advice, or input in general would be appreciated. Also if my data is being throttled would changing roms help out? I don't really know, just a thought. If this subject has been covered I apologize as it takes quite a long time to do anything over the Internet right now.

getting this at -100 dbm
I'm currently at -77dbm. What does this mean? I know it has to do with signal strength but what does it mean?

The lower the number the better, as for the adding new towers statement, I believe your confused, there was a recent update of the speed test app, which added more locations to transmit the data to, to possibly get a more accurate measurement or ping time I'm guessing, its in the what's new description when you download the app. Don't know bout the throttling thing though, I have asked a bandwidth question and no one would or could answer and I can make educated guesses as good as the next but I don't really know how that works, sorry bud, hope this cleared up some confusion about the whole adding new towers thing though...

2GB is way too low of a cap before throttling kick in, especially if you have unlimited data plan, 4GB is more like it. lol
So what that article is saying is that if I enter an area covered by different towers my speed should go back to normal? Right now I'm at work in the middle of the desert close to the Mexican border and here is my latest score with 1 bar 3g

My phone will come in tomorrow, but I did have the chance to play with one at a Tmo store today. I live in Miami, so I too have HSPA+. Gotta tell you this thing is fast! YOUTUBE HQ vids played right away with no issues at all. Web pages flowed very smooth. Flash works perfect. Only thing I was not able to do was run any speed test, but what I've been seeing all over the net it's putting up some great scores.

Not sure about Sac but I've had it in San Mateo, Hayward & Vallejo. 3.1mbit down, .9mbit up MAX on G1.
This is my G1 on the "UMTS" network.
Okay, so since I'm too new, I can't post links to outside sites, so my results were 4.25MB/s download, and 1.59MB/s upload
I got similar speeds with my vibrant, so the g2 better be faster then all the results I've seen here...

Nice...finally some real G2 HSPA+ speed results. Looks like we'll probably double our download speeds for the most part. I'm guessing upload will be throttled to about 1.5Mb regardless.

My MAIN concern is reception. How is the reception on the incredible? The galaxy s phones have such a weak antenna that I get lousy reception all the time.
And that's about my only question lol. The reception on this phone is so bad that I've come to hate the phone. I've tried every single rom, kernel, fix, etc. and nothing has helped. Worst phone I've ever owned.
If you are going to trash your fascinate, give it to me instead.
My incredible gets good reception most of the time. Even when its at -104 I can typically hold a call.

Theres always somebody looking to buy a AMOLED android
This is the device I've dreamed of the last 10 yrs....and I've run with most all the latest and greatest.
I dumped my only big gripe about the browsers mobile-only page viewing, but the fact is this phone surpasses even my extreme contentment with the Galaxy S2 I've been running on ATT and Sprints Wimax MiFi.
Whoda thunk a carrier could take the device with the highest kudo's in the industry and make it better. A Carrier?
Sure, I'm gonna dump the bloatware and get Villians Rom on here asap as well as overclock and undervolt.
But how does this top the SGS2?
*love the bigger screen (ever since I played with the infuse).
*GPS much more accurate
*browser speed is faster...not by much, but consistantly (slightly) faster.
*text reflows via pinch past the first doubletap.
*International version struuggled at times with MMS transmission. No more.
*Without a doubt camera is quicker, all pics are slightly brighter and dilineation is better.
*Overall auto-brightness is dimmed (was too bright before...has marked effect on battery already and its only on the first cycle!
*not that I care (wink) but twice already I've gotten: "wow, what phone is THAT?!"
So major kudo's to Sprint here for putting out the phone of the year! ...so far (yeah, Iphone5...Nexus Prime...I know).
Never been able to say this before....but this is perfect out of the box. Doesn't NEED root...but all root goodies will be purely gravy.
(Oh, cept for the browser gripe....I DID mention that in another post didnt I?...I'll have to check!
I cant disagree with anything you said. I could root and be happy..but that wont happen. I will still have to try every ROM at least once

I already said this in another post but I think a big reason why the network is slow is because of Virgin/Boost/Walmart's straight talk(sprints network)_. I switched from TMO from Sprint about 8 months ago and it was definitely better in my location... Eugene, Oregon. I think it may just get worse since those $35-50 unlimited plans are pretty hard to pass up especially when the android phones their getting are slowly getting better every season. We do have the 4g.. but I find it's fine if your in one place.. using while traveling it's inconsistent .. for example I can stream netflix low quality fine on 3g.. but 4g streams it great but if I'm driving it will disconnect occasionally when it switched to 3g when it has to.
..... But yeah other than the overtaxed network this phone is fantastic.

I know this is above and beyond, but my work has me out and about all day, and I need the internet and need a good signal.
I got the MiFI...about 4 months ago ($35mo) and in addition to connecting multiple devices it greatly amplifies the 4G (and 3G actually) whenever the signal gets weak.
I struggled with a 4G signal deep in a building, I switched to the wireless MiFi and I had strong 4G immediately.
I know for most its not a consideration but works well if needed.
QUOTE=tri0xinn;17616147]I already said this in another post but I think a big reason why the network is slow is because of Virgin/Boost/Walmart's straight talk(sprints network)_. People are always talking crap about "sprints network" even though it pushed the industry into 4G technology. I was pushing over 4 MB/s download speeds while my apple fanboy friends where still trying to impress me with their 1200 kb/s 3g speeds on their locked down iphones with battery's going bad and patented special apple screws lol. Sprint pushed this industry into higher speed data traffic, sprint put HTC and Android on the map in partnership for the HTC Evo 4g. Sprint is always getting the best phones to it's customers the fastest it can before other carriers. Sprint has made smartphone history and have excellent service and I commend them for it as a proud android user. ATT or Cingular are monopolistic thugs, Verizon is no better, both are rip offs. Sprint = Freedom. Unlimited baby, that's how we roll. See you when you're at the beach with a rooted android device on the sprint network and wireless tether without a worry in the world how much data you're eating up. Then you'll know what true wireless service means.
---------- Post added at 10:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:12 PM ----------
With that said, I have the epic 4g touch and it's a monster. The only phone Galaxy S2 in the world that will have the original xyenos processor with a 4.52 inch screen, the first released in the USA and the only one with notification lighting. All compliments of Sprint. Job well done, the phone is unmatched and won't be for a long time. Sprint sets the bar once again.

Basically unless you have access to wifi streaming music and video is out. This makes it impossible for me to stream music while i work, so it is back to the radio. This is going to continue until people tell the cell phone companies no this is not acceptable.
I have the 5GB plan and I've been doing a LOT with it; Downloading HD Videos off of youtube, downloading music, Web browsing, streaming youtube videos, tethering to my computer to play online games (which is smooth and lag-free), and I've used up about 1.6GB. I can't even imagine using 10GB in that small of a time frame.
You used 10GB just from streaming Netflix once and using Pandora everyday since the 8th of December? That number sounds very high. Do you have some sort of data manager that tracks how much data (in MB) your apps are using up?
I do agree that with these blazing speeds, it is easy to go nuts and just go on a rampage. I know that if I didn't restrain myself sometimes, I could use up my data cap in a couple days. Kind of a bummer that we can't truly enjoy the phone without having to worry about being throttled =/

The only thing that uses more data is running speedtests or having higher quality music/video streams (and higher speedtest download files) because your connection is faster.
Solution: stop streaming so much, use WiFi more. They can't do away with caps because your speeds wouldn't be fast anymore.. duh.

And you also feel my pain, LTE is like 3x faster (I have 24/3 at home, LTE usually gets around 45/60 down and 15 up), I download all the time on LTE.

That's cool if you "worked" there. But your knowledge is incorrect. There's no way a rep or supervisor can reset data. They can add to it if you change your data plan to a higher cap, but they can't reset it. And if you do go up and change back before the month is up, you drop back to your old cap and remain at the same usage.
I know this for a fact. Trust me.

I just figured this out myself so thought share my experience. I haven't seen a thread similar so if there is one calm down.
Basically what I noticed was here in Denver where I live the app would choose the nearest server (Comcast) for here. I was only getting around 7 megs down and couldn't figure out why my numbers were so much slower than others around the country. For whatever reason I decided to change servers to one about a 100 miles down the road and for whatever reason that made an insane difference. I chose the one in Woodland Park (Peak Internet) and started getting in the low 40's for download speeds.
I guess the moral of the story is if you feel your getting inadequate dl speeds switch servers and see what happens.

That is to be expected I guess.
I did find another really strange issue today. When I run speedtest on the phone, I was getting around 8Mbps (1 bar of 4G), but when I enabled WiFi tether on my phone, connected my laptop to the GN's WiFi, and ran speedtest locally on my laptop, the recorded speed was 12-13Mbps
I was totally not expecting that as I would have thought it would be lower. I repeated this multiple times and made sure that both when running speedtest.net on the phone or on my laptop, the same server was selected. Seems like the speedtest.net app on the GN might be bogging it down and making it record lower speeds than what it is actually capable of?

Seems like the speedtest.net app on the GN might be bogging it down and making it record lower speeds than what it is actually capable of?

Congestion huh or maybe just a slow server since I have a month and a half of the exact same speeds at all times of the day. Unfortunately you have no idea as to what your talking about. Not all servers are the same!!!

Is this a joke? It's true not all servers are the same but the most likely underlying cause is congestion.

You want to test your download speeds, download a Linux ISO and see how long it takes, then divide the size of the ISO by the time it took.
