[Q] Random loss of notification sounds, volume keys not working - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I haven't been able to find anything about this, but if there is something already point me that way.
I'm running Dirty Unicorns du_d2att_2013-10-14 Android version 4.3.1 on an SGH-I747.
I can't seem to find a common thread, so it's apparently random.
I'm losing the functionality of my hardware volume keys for the Android functions. It works inside Google Play, and works if I'm in the power menu. Occasionally it stops functioning for controlling volume for profiles from the home screen.
Also, and more importantly, I'm losing notification sounds. Vibration still works. The notification sounds include my alarm, and I've been late to work and almost a flight because of this.
Is there a way to fix this? I can't post in the dev thread because of how new I am.
Thanks for any info!

Does anybody have an idea? My alarm failed again and I was late for work.
I'm probably going to install a new ROM later if I don't get any responses, which sucks because I like this ROM a lot.

Just a thought on the sounds. Do you use tibu free version and have schedules set to backup? On my various devices I have the free version on, every time a backup is done (unless done manually) all customizations revert to stock, sounds, wallpapers, ringtones. Maybe?

Desire forgets Ringtones, Alarm and Text sounds

Hey there
Forst it was a minor annoyance, but this morning the alarm went off without any sound and I was quite lucky, that the vibration was strong enough to get me out of sleep. But this just can't be.
I use custom sounds for all occasions and I got them in with the special folder structure for android to recognize sounds for the apporpriate actions.
But sometimes (no idea, why) it forgets to select any sound at all. In the list, NONE of the sounds - not even the default ones - is selected. Thus the silent alarm. (Except for the call ringtones, which switches to some boring bell.)
I kinda think that it has something to do with some .nomedia files I placed in various folders (like the ones of games...), but this just can't happen.
Any ideas, how to solve this issue? (Yes, since today it's an issue)
Thanks!
Same here. I think it has to do with the sd unmounting itself problem mentioned elsewhere. No real solution yet. Sux.
Sound Issue
I get this issue also. Approx every 24 hours i lose all Sounds for Ringtone, Alarm, Text and Email.
The only way I can get the phone to make a noise is to use the Hardware volume buttons on the side of the phone.
Even if a do a test Alarm or try to change my ringtone - No Sound.
I use all standard default sounds so no custom ringtones etc.
I have tried resetting my phone back to Factory, removing all task Manager Apps, All non essential Apps.
My workaround is to reboot my phone everynight to ensure the Alarm works in the morning.
This started since the 1.21 OTA update. Roll on 2.2..
I have started a thread for this already but no responses so far. Maybe it is not that common.
Lee.
Never had that problem, for me the only issue with alarm is the impossibility to put the sound/music to increase the volume gently...
Just started having this problem myself in the last few days. Not updated anything and still on stock 1.15 rooted.

I used to have to do this with my WinMo phone. I had hoped a new Android would actually 'work' but no, I have the issue too (although I thought it was something I'd done until I saw this thread!).

I'm still on 1.15 so it can't be the update.

[Q] Volume (Ringer/Notification Linked)

I've tried numerous apps and they all seem to fail in doing this.
I want the option of linking my ringtone and notification volume levels together.
I got so used to CyanogenMod for years doing this by default, but Sammy took that away from us - again. In the past, certain apps were able to put it back in, but it seems the coding with regards to our volume control is not currently able to be changed.
Other than flashing an AOSP-based rom, is there any way to do this?
Thanks!

Sound Settings Problem

About a month ago I screwed up my phone and had to LGNPST it for the first time. I'm not even sure if this is the moment this problem appeared but it may have been the start of something. Before that, I was running a JB CM build with a GPS lock issue that I never got around to fix and decided to fix it before I flashed a Kit Kat rom. That lead to a bad stock-based flash which then lead to the LGNPST fix. I then flashed to a different stock-based rom, updated PRL and obtained a GPS lock, then flashed a few different roms before settling on the offical CM 11 rom.
Somewhere after the LGNPST I ran into problems with the sound volume settings being completely ignored and this issue appears across multiple roms. I'll have the settings set to silent and it'll still play some odd sound whenever I receive an sms. When I try to change the sounds, nothing plays when I am previewing the sounds and if I select one the settings will crash. The ringtone files do exist in /media/audio/ringtones and they play correctly in Apollo. I have also downloaded Zedge and used it for setting the sounds inside the settings screen and it does not play the sound when previewing and crashes when I select a sound. Setting the ringtone inside of the actual Zedge application does work for the notification ringtone, but does not work with phone ringtone (it does appear to be changed in settings, but no sound is played during calls). Furthermore, when I attempt to set the sound in Hangouts for either SMS or regular hangout messages, it does not change from "Silent" but does not show any crash messages or anything.
In a possibly related note, every time I flash a new rom it will get stuck on activation until I just skip it. However, data services work completely fine. I have no problems with making calls, 3G/LTE, sending and receiving sms including pictures.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Dammit. I'm a long time lurker on xda and I should know better. This post was meant for the sprint troubleshooting section. I decided to try searching this side to see if the issue was experienced/resolved here and forgot to switch back for posting. Can an awesome mod possibly move this to the sprint troubleshooting section?

Complete outage of device volume

i'm experiencing a complete outage of my (no root) n5x's volume, including alarm clock volume when using text-to-speech (3.9.16). this happens several times a day, usually after about an hour, but could be random, to solve it, i have to force-close tts as well as the MacroDroid app using it.
so, if you select a ringtone in settings you usually hear the tone when you tap on it - when i do so, there's no sound at all, nor if i use the volume slider.
- i use Outloud to speak notifications via tts
- and MacroDroid (or Automate-it) to speak well, things like, when i disable wifi ("wifi deactivated"..), or tells the time when the sun sets, tells time/every 15 mins., etc.
so you might guess it's the apps' fault, but it's not, i also tried automate-it app, and disabled Outloud.
- i tried everything to fix this, like: disabled battery optimization, background processes, notification priority/level, even a factory reset! nothing helped.
- i reported this issues to Google about 15 days ago.
- volume is on in settings, of course..
- (and dnd is off, as well..)
- one strange thing: i can play music using g play music
- it worked on M!
have you experienced the same?
do you have any idea to help? this is so frustrating because i used this all the time on my previous N4, and also on another LG phone, and it always worked.
P.S. I remember to have already had this issue when I used a custom rom on the N4, but don't remember what fixed it, probably used a different rom.
tia.
Google text-to-speech 3.10.10 does not fix it.
It seems to be a Nougat problem, doze or memory.
Issue is fixed on 7.1.1-dp1! :victory:

Ring, Notification, & Alarm sounds are silent/don't work (but Media & Call sounds DO work)

Hi all,
Hoping someone brighter than me can figure this sound issue out.
THE PROBLEM:
Half of my sounds don't work, rendering my phone useless in the current state. As the title says, Ring, Notification, & Alarm sounds do not work. You know, as in the important stuff that makes your phone, a phone? And makes you wake up in the morning? None of these respective sliders under Sound & Vibration settings make any noise when making adjustments. By contrast, my Media and Call volume sliders DO make noise when adjusting. And sure enough, once on a phone call, I hear things just fine (Call). And YouTube, Spotify, et al. (Media) also work just fine.
Because some sounds work but others don't, this has to be a software issue, right? This would be easy if it was hardware and 0% of sounds worked, but nope, it's partial.
BACKGROUND:
This pixel 3 xl is relatively new to me, but has ran A10 and A11 with a few different ROMs with 100% of sound working flawlessly. But out of nowhere, sounds suddenly stopped working correctly as described above. And it didn't occur immediately or shortly after a new rom flash or update or anything like that. Just stopped working, months into a well-running ROM.
I've tried a couple different ROMs now to fix the issue from a completely clean install (/format data + flash latest google factory image as 1st step) but none have fixed the issue. Specifically, pixeldust (A11) and evolutionX (A11) were my latest troubleshooting attempts with no avail. Pixeldust was the ROM that was formerly working and then after months of 100% sounds working, suddenly stopped.
It's odd that searching throughout the ROM threads that no one else seems to be having this issue. Again, this would be easy if it was a hardware failure. But that doesn't explain how it works for Youtube/Spotify but not for other things, so it has to be software.... I think?
I figured I'd start a thread here rather than start posting in each and every ROM I've tried to troubleshoot this. Thank you!
This might not be relevant because I'm using stock Android on a Pixel 4a but my notifications have gone silent and this report was the only similar search result I found. I tried changing the notification tone and none of them played a short snippet so I'm wondering if the problem is there.
I have not found a solution for this issue.
One thing I noticed recently is that when I'm on a call using the regular "earpiece" or whatever it's called (which works fine), if I switch to speaker phone, I can't hear anything. I have to switch back to the non-speaker ear mode and I can hear the call again.

I think I may have finally found the solution!! Sometimes it's the simple things in life that work, rather than reflashing a billion different ways that finally gets things working again.
In this case, I simply cleared the cache and storage for the 'Sounds' apps under Settings -> Apps & notifications -> See all apps -> Click 3 dots in upper right corner -> Show system. Then, I deleted cache and storage for TWO apps, both called 'Sounds' with 2 different icons. I'm not sure which is the system app and which is not nor do I know if clearing only one of them was necessary, but this is what has worked for me and has survived several restarts thus far. Good luck!
