[Q] How To DO ANYTHING If My Micro-USB Port Is Broken - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have this old HTC Evo 4G lying around and wanted to get some solid performing AOSP ROM on it and make the most out of it. But the microUSB port is broken... I can't unlock the bootloader using HTC's site so it seems there is little to do. Can't root it, ROM it, or install a custom recovery. I manage to charge the batteries externally. Any suggestions?
Tried z4Root and neither the permanent nor temporary options worked.
Could there be a way to unlock the bootloader without connecting it to a computer? Is there anything else I can do? If not, any other suggestions?
Build Number/ Software Number 5.07.651
Android Version 2.3.5

You're pretty much stuck without a working USB port. Wireless ADB isn't an option since you're not rooted, and it doesn't work in fastboot, either. Not really any options other than keeping a spare battery handy or getting the device fixed or replaced.

Thanks anyway

Yeah thanks for the help anyhow. I guess I can try wireless ADB if i ever miraculously find a way to root it. I'll see about fixing the port as a replacement costs a few bucks. It is apparently very hard to switch in the new port properly though. Thanks again!

[Q] Hardware problem...how to un-root

I have a friend. We rooted her phone. All was well but apparently, somehow, the usb port on her phone got damaged (not b/c of software) and now the phone won't charge. She wants to send it for repair but she is paranoid since we rooted it that they won't fix it. She'd like me to un-root it. So here's my question:
I installed cyanogen's rom. Is it possible to update to Sprint's "official" 2.2 straight from that rom? Will accepting Sprint's update automatically un-root it, or is there a more complicated process needed?
Thanks!
I believe all you have to do I
Is run the stock ruu program which is run from your computer connected by usb look for it in the developers thread

with out the ability to use usb (if it doesnt work for charging, does it connect to the pc and get recognized?) you cant run the ruu.
however, if you run the OTA update. from home->settings->system updates, you should be able to query for update, not sure which, so try them all!
the OTA breaks root and removes recovery (please someone correct me if im wrong), bringing it back to stock.
you could always just brick it *shrug*

Thanks for noticing that I can't plug it in USB. My concern about your post is the last line, "you could always brick it." Do you mean that if I try to update, it may brick b/c it was rooted? If it's bricked will the fact it was rooted or not come into question with repair place, or will they know it was rooted?
Thanks again.

meaning, you can brick it on purpose i have no idea if they can find out if you rooted it, or if the repair service would even care. theyre not the claims department, soooooooooooooooooooooo.
theres a thread there in q&a or general about someone who returned(attempted to) a phone because "the ota bricked it"
If I were your friend I would download a 2.1 rom right from the phone, use a file exploere to move it to the root of the sdcard, flash the 2.1 rom then do the official 2.2 ota update.
The only problem with this is if you can't charge it then I hope you can get it done by the time her battery dies.. however, if the battery dies and you can't charge it enough to finish this then what is Sprint gonna do anyways.
Actually I think that might be a real option. If you can't charge the phone just run it down till it dies and then take it in. They wont be able to power it on and see that it's rooted anyways..

its not hard to swap out a battery for a test.

This forum has the best people, I swear. I can put my battery in her phone. I like your idea. I actually have a backup in her phone of the stock rooted rom. So, if I flash back to it, do you think I can just download the official update and become "un-rooted"?
thanks.
yes

Mine is NOT ROOTED & at day 21 the USB port &/or cable went buggy immediately after I purchased & used a car charger from the Sprint store (employee insisted it was the "correct" charger for EVO after telling me NOT to use my Palm Pre chargers & cables even though the ports were the same....he said the Pre equipment xfrd a diff current or wattage. Who knows if that's bad info or not, btw .)
The problem started off as totally non-functioning for charge, pc sync, et all, then after using the Sprint car charger exclusively for several days - just to be able to use the EVO at all- & freaking out about it to Sprint Tech Support & at the store, it just suddenly started charging if I touched or bent it a certain way, like it had a short or bad connection.
Next, I visited a Sprint repair store & they just reset the "USB debugging" option to ENABLE/ON (again) & then the USB cable would work for pc sync and sometimes charge as well.
After 6 weeks I'm left with having to ditch the wall outlet adapter plug from the orig box, put a cig lighter/USB plug from my iTouch on it & plug it into a cig lighter wall plug adapter to charge at home in the wall.
I'm pretty tech savvy & I still can't tell if it's a software issue with the cable or the EVO port, or a physical issue with the cable or the port, or some combo of all 4 options. I love my EVO so I adapted & moved on, but definitely logged my complaint loudly with Sprint, insisting they extend my 30 days until the issue is 100% resolved.
I hope that my experience solves your own mystery.

Ok, so I restored the 2.1 backup, checked for update, downloaded update. When I hit install, it went into recovery. Half way through installation, I got the little android with an exclamation mark. It just sat there for 5 to 10 minutes (saw a progress bar before this but it stopped halfway through). I pulled the battery and turned the phone back on. Thank God, it's not bricked but I don't know why the update stopped halfway through. I did install the newest radios when I flashed cyanogen's rom and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it not completing installation. I'm wondering if I should install an older radio and try again.
Any ideas?

Man, I messed up my phone!!!! EPIC 4G

Here's my situation:
SAMSUNG EPIC 4G
I've updated roms without problem many times since buying my phone. I am currently on 2.3.4, gingerbred eh06. I cannot get the usb to work with my pc at all. I'm assuming that since the phone still charges, the usb is functional? I was going to try a flash back to stock ec05, but cannot do this because I don't seem to have CWM installed. I did, don't know what happened to it. All it says when doing a cw boot is android system recovery <3e>
I tried to follow the link for rooting my phone without a pc, but cannot get it to work because I don't have superuser access. I did but don't know what happened there also??? Apparently gingerbreak doesn't work on 2.3.4 from what I am finding. I'm about at the end of my rope here and am looking for somebody to throw me a bone. ANY IDEAS.
I should also tell you that I know the cables I have are good. I have 2 samsung and 4 aftermarket cables and they all work. My wife has the exact same phone and works every time, with every cable. Of course her phone hasn't had any "custom" work done to it if you know what I mean...
Try Heimdall. It installs its own drivers and is more robust. Post 2 in Development stickie of how to fix a semi-bricked Epic.

Tried that just now, didn't work. When I tell it to list devices, it comes up as unknown device and won't install any drivers. tried my wife's phone and it seemed to work just fine. Maybe the phone can charge with a broken usb port?????? AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so you have no root and no odin/heimdall?
Yes it can charge with a bad port or a bad cable. Since the cables are good some of your usb port may be damaged somehow. Did you check for dirt or debris in the port?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Right, neither works. Its not the pc either. Tried win 7 64 and 32 bit, xp pro, ubuntu, joli os. Nada
Thought about tearing down phone and looking for dirt/debris. Just loking for all possibilities. I did fing a usb port on ebay for about 50 bucks, doesn't really look like something I could replace myself. ;'m assuming that it's soldered in.

I believe non warranty repairs like that are only $35 at Sprint.
Good job Sprint
Just left the Sprint store and they gave me a new phone. Tried like hell to get an upgrade to the Galaxy IIs, but no go. I gave them a boo hoo story and even told them i'd settle for the Nexus s, but they wouldn't budge there either.... Oh well. At least I got a new phone out of the deal. Kudos to the Sprint store and their employees though.
This happened to me at first too, then my phone stopped charging the battery. Maybe this is a sign of the port actually going out? Right now, I'm waiting on my replacement through Sprint without a charging phone.
I was able to finally get a good working combination of my brother's Evo cable and Odin 1.7 to flash back to stock for warranty work.

[Q] Restore S-ON without usb

Hello there, my droid incredible 2 has a faulty USB port, it accepts charge but it will not connect to any computer with any cable.

maybe if u can hook sd card to comp.
I think I read somewhere in the DIncI forum about running ADB through WiFi and doing console commands.
Not sure how it worked out tho.
When I got my first DIncII, The cable was a mother to pull out so I went to VZW corp store and they gave me a new cable.
Have you tried different cables/PCs?
Have you tried ##3424# send? You need a sense based ROM to use that, but it should get you into DIAG mode to use ADB with minimal OS interference.
The port its connected with a ribbon cable so try with back off holding the port in different positions.
Applying slight force in different directions and holding it there.
Maybe poster putty would help to lock it to that position long enough to achieve the ADB.
Good luck.
im experiencing the same issue, i cannot get my computer to recognize the phone after trying multiple cables. wireless abd seems to require root access to get it working and i have already restored to unrooted 2.2. how thorough does verizon check phones they receive back? will they notice an unlocked bootloader?
Not sure if Verizon will have the phone long enough to care - do they check returned phones or just forward them to HTC for the standard refurbishing process?
The USB/charging port just went in our 6-month old Incredible 2, and it's only now that I've found threads at Verizon's website of many others complaining about this model having a chronic issue with this portion of its hardware. So, I guess we'll have to expect more refurbished replacements until the two-year contract is due. Disappointing, especially in light of how well it operates when the port is working as expected.

I ended up just screaming and holding the USB cable at an obscure angle to restore the connection
As for the wireless ADB and over tcp and whatnot, so far what i've found has only been theoretical, nobody has posted anything about it working in reality, and this stuff is far beyond my knowledge

[Q] Getting phone back to stock with broken usb port...

My phone apparently has a broken usb port and i want to try to get a replacement from Verizon.
(My phone was rooted using AlpharevX.. and i am using skyraider zeus 1.3 rom at the moment.)
I am following the guide from rootzwiki: here
However, after getting back to froyo i would need to use the usb port to be able to run adb to get temp root access and follow the rest of the steps. Since i have a broken port, is there another way i can run adb wirelessly to get temp root?..
Any help/thoughts are appreciated... thanks.

Another user on the forums had the same issue and was able to fix this by screaming at the top of his lungs and just jiggling the cable while attached to the phone and it finally read the port (not joking)

someone mentioned using SSHDroid, but i have no idea if i would be able to use adb there
Anyone has experience with SSHDroid?
I had issues with my usb port as well, but I just replaced the port as it is replaced as a whole piece with a flex cable. I paid like 15 bucks off ebay and now my phone works great.

You can use something like dropbox to transfer some more stockish looking ROM on your phone, but i'm not too sure how to lock it without USB cable. I'm too lazy now to reboot my phone into bootloader, but wasn't there an option to re-lock it?
Anyway, if this will happen to my GN i'll just pay €30 for USB port replacement. I had same issue on SGS2.

well... to be honest, i think thats a lot of money that can be spent on a phone thats pretty new. With that being said, it is cheap compared to what i would be paying if i had to pay full retail price.
------
To update this thread, I got my phone and charger replaced free from verizon. Basically, i had a bunch of different roms downloaded and tried to install some good ics looking roms. They didnt really work as well as i wanted so it was an easy solution to "brick" (and brick is used very very very loosely) my phone.
1. Wipe data/ cache / dalvik
2. Install zip from sd.
3. Pick out a different rom and let it install ---- BUT WAIT
4. Pull battery in the middle of installation.
I had to do it a couple of times, but eventually i got it to the point where the only thing that would show up was the google logo.
My thought was that they would just reflash to stock in the store, but the rep didnt really know what he was doing. He probably figured i tried to root (he asked if i tried to root... duh, NO!), and probably spent most of the time trying to get it to come on and didnt bother putting on their falshing machine thing.
Anyways, Since it was still a phone under warranty and they had no evidence of it being unlocked or rooted, they replaced my phone as well as my charger for free.
------
Im just hoping they dont secretly put a note under my account that i might root my phone.
