Hi guys,
I would appreciate some help if anyone has the knowledge or acces.
I was given a note n7105 that had been water damage. I cleaned it up and got it working but it had a mic issue.
The short story is that I found a loose component on the board that looked like it had corroded at one end. I tried to solder it back on but being as far gone as it was, it disintegrated.
Now all this does is make the on board mics completely useless, they don't work at all ( I assume it provides ac coupling to/from the audio chip) but the Bluetooth/auxiliary mic does (which I think is coupled by a component adjacent to the broken one).
I am in desperate need of the value of that component (assumed capacitor) to make my mic/s work again.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Hi,
Microfone coupling capacitors can be very diferent. You can can try one of 1 uf, and experiment, if that doesn't go well try another value like 4.7uf or 10 u or even 100 nf.
You can buy 4 or 5 eletrolityc capacitors with diferent values and try. Place it with carefull and don't heat too much the motherboard.
After you find the one that suits better,
buy smd and place it.
Thanks mocito. I cleaned it up with about 350° heat small hakko tip ( way too big BTW) but it worked. I know a dead short is wrong because the thing wouldn't turn on. Open circuit I believe is the cause of my audio routing issues, mainly because I had the opposite problem true the day before. The on board mics worked and the headsets wouldn't. I found this component leaning on the one next to it, and when removed it brought about my current issue.
It would be nice to confirm that this component is tied to the onboard mic audio.
I'll try a few different values if I can get my hands on them and give it a shot. It would be nice to get working. Kinda just sporting a small tablet in its current function.

Well I fixed it. Two problems I had with this unit. That cap was dislodged and my mic (board assembly at the bottom of the phone with the antenna contacts) was also jiggered. But, with some perseverance I got a capacitor about the same size as the big one just above those two tiny ones and soldered one pad to the side of that big one and to the bottom of the little one that I am assuming couples the audio for the bluetooth and external headsets. They were in common with the top and bottom solder pads for the missing capacitor. Once again if someone can confirm my assumptions I would appreciate it. Thanks mocito for your input.

I searched around for this problem, but couldn't find a good answer. I am using my Desire HD with the Klipsch Image S4 IEMs (great headphones!) and recently I have this very annoying issue.
Most times when I plug the headphones in they get recognized as a headset (with microphone and buttons) and the slightest movement causes the music player to start playing or change or song, or what's even worse, the phone to redial the last call.
At first I thought the headphone jack had gone busted so I tried with my full sized Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO cans, but I get the same issue. When I use the stock headset that came with the HD however, there's no problem.
I think what's happening is that the 3 part plug (as opposed to the 4 part of the stock headset) doesn't always make good contact, or it touches the connector for the 4th part briefly at insertion, and it creates this problem.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is it possible that the plug on the phone is busted? I don't feel like sending the phone in over such small thing, but it is pretty annoying...

I have the same IEMs as you do, and I have not noticed that problem. I had similar issues with my Xperia, cleaning the 3.5 mm female connector helped for a while, but I eventually had to send my phone back to be repaired.

Seen the same thing when using my external speakers, something goes funny with the resistance or capacitance.
Difficult to test unless you sacrifice the cable
Try cover the 3rd and 4th section with nail polish or some other non-conductive stuff.
Ideas? Maybe lookup the schematics of the jack and confirm contact areas, then fix up as needed.

I can easily get a 3 and 4 section jacks and cables on the cheap for testing purposes. Do you have an idea of how to go about testing it in some systematic fashion? I wouldn't mind cutting the cable of the headphones and soldering my own jack at the end of it if I am sure that it will work reliably.

Try measure the lengths accurately from the headset included with the DHD.
There might just be some overlapping. If that is not the case, it might be a bit problematic.

There's no overlapping, but the tip of the S4s is a tiny bit shorter and a bit thinner at the base of the last, topmost, part. Weirdly enough I just cleaned the tip a bit and that seems to have solved the problem for the time being...
Maybe the dirt was leading to some resistance? Do you know how the buttons work?

Looks like I was right about how the sensor on the headphone jack went but lucky me there is an app on Play Store that activates and deactivaes the headphones. Wired Headphone/Headset Fix is a widget that will reject or activate headphones if the sensor works or not.
I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve here?
Best thing is to talk first to HTC don't you think?
All parts of the phone are part of the mainboard.

I'm trying to achieve input. I searched and couldn't find anything similar to my problem. Also the screen, cameras, sensors, battery, speakers ect. Are not part of the main board. The headphone jack is connected to the main board unlike my iPod Touch 1G which it'd headphone isn't part of the mainboard.

This definitely sounds like a hardware issue to me. Haven't seen anything like this floating around xda... You should be covered by warranty even if you have unlocked as this couldn't be a software issue (which country are you in?). I'd take it back to the company you bought it from NOT HTC. It's up to them to sort the problem out as they sold you faulty goods. Good luck!

I'm in Canada and it was imported from Singapore from family. Sadly that family member lives in London and I have no clue where she bought it from. Well having no headphones isn't too bad for me because all my music is on my iPod and Tablet. The external speaker still works. My only guess would be flashing the jelly bean rom could have broken the headphones but that's very doubtful.

This is what HTC told me via e-mail about repairing an international phone in the U.S. Canada is handled through HTC’s U.S. support channels.

Since every One X built is still under warranty they may not ask for proof of purchase. As for the jack failing, there are probably hundreds of points of failure in a mobile device. You seem to have drawn the short straw.
Thanks for the reply Barry! I will give HTC a call and hope they are generous. Sadly I do have a budget so if the cost is too much i guess I'm all out of luck. The headphone jack isnt much of a problem with me but fixing it would be a plus.

Even if you can't get it fixed for free/within your budget, not all hope of using external headphones are lost. Get a stereo Bluetooth A2DP headset or one of those BT stereo clips that allows plugging in your own headphones. They are more convenient than wired headsets anyway.
I've actually had mine fail the past couple of weeks too. I thought it was a ROM issue but it wasn't. Gonna try calling HTC too.
I too have had a similar issue and was going to post this. I recently dropped my HOX down the toilet. Managed to fish it out straight away and dry it off etc and it appeared that everything was working fine but then I came to use my headphones a day or two after and discovered the phone doesn't acknowledge any headphones being put in.
If you could keep us posted about how you get on that'd be great!

i am having this after jb install ....one left earpiece not working i have to wiggle jack n it seems to pick up but then fades again ...

That happend to me a couple of days after my One X fell into water. I blow some air into the audio jack, sucked some air back with my mouth and then took some tissues and clean the inner parts of the audio jack. And after that 10-minutes care my audio-jack started working properly again for 2 months without a single issue so far. You can try what I did.
I love you OP! (no homo). I dropped my One V in some obscure place and, after drying it, buying a replacement battery, and changing the power button-volume circuit, I detected that the headphone jack didn't work! I was going to unsolder and solder a replacement, but it was just the sensor that went bust. That app saved me! Thank you!!
sorry for bringing this topic back up but I had this problem on my htc one and this app worked! seeems the sensor went out on my phone for the hadphone jack
I had a blue GS3 before and the headphones fit snug and now I have a new white one and if I turn the headphone jack slightly it cuts out completely on one ear and is very loose crackly also.....should I take it in the store for a replacement or what?
I'm having the same problem. Pissing me off. I'm noticing that it's with mostly with aux cables with 2 levels instead of 3 (don't notice with the OEM Samsung cables)

had that problem with a 3.5mm audio jack that was attached to the car. keep the audio jack plugged into your phone, reboot with it still plugged in, and it should start to work. that is, unless the wire is bad, or the base is too big- causing it to not go in fully.
is your headphone jack a right angle? i had the same issue with my one x that i returned but getting a headphone jack to jack adapter so instead of having a right angle and going to a straight one fixed it. waiting on a new adapter so i can try the same fix on my s3 that has the same issue with my right angle headphone jack...
having the same issue with multiple aux cables. rebooting while plugged didn't help

Yep, That's the same here. Turns out that the jack is 'kinda cheapo' plastic that is, and if like me you use larger headphones (non-earbuds) that the side to side pull of the larger plug will eventually force a contact pin to no longer make that contact. You can pull and twist the cord and sound comes in and out on one side. in my case the right side.
Solution: I bought a replacement Speaker/Headphone assembly. Took me less then 5 minutes to disassemble the device and pop in the new OEM part. Problem solved. I chose this rather then wait for Mobilicity to take weeks to get it fixed for me.

Naturally. I tested on two identical Sony studio monitors, and a few earbuds. The problem was 100% hardware.
Have you guys tried cleaning out the headphone jack? Last time I had issues I had a little bit of lint stuck at the bottom and couldn't insert the headphone jack all the way in. Give it a shot and shine a light in, hopefully the issue you guys are having will just be a little lint!

That's a possibility, albeit a slim one. I used a jewelers loop in my case. Inside are multiple contact pins. Not all are used for sound. One of my pins was 'pushed' inward. That's why jiggling the plug causes a temporary solution. After I removed the original part I dissected it. The pins are set into the molded plastic as a single piece. The pins themselves are a single ribbon bent to flex a bit.
I figure in my case to much flexing of a the heavier plug with the weight of the coiled cord (Sony MDR-7505 Headphones) caused it to mash inward as I walked around. I'll never know for sure.
I hope it is just lint in the OP's case. If not at least parts are available. Non OEM parts are even less then what I paid. That or just wait for the repair done by Samsung.

Hmm, I think i'm starting to have the same issue as you. When I had my LG i had the issue with the plug and lint.. it seems this time with the S3 it's just not as well made. Where would you be purchasing the part from? I would consider fixing it on my own..

Using the Galaxy Nexus and I had just purchased the Klipsch s4a earbuds (amazing purchase for anybody who's an audio lover without incredibly deep pockets) and the audio kept cutting unless I had the jack placed in a specific manner --which is impossible to keep in a jacket, so I came across this thread and wondered how the hell lint can get into such a small hole. I checked by digging a toothpick till the end and scraping out a massive chunk.
Earbuds work amazingly now.

I'm having the same problem, but for me it's worse when the headphones go too far down. In other words I intentionally put some tiny bits of paper into the hole and now it doesn't cut out as easily. But still if I move the plug too far to one side it'll cut off, which is really annoying when it's in my pocket and I occasionally bump the chord plug with my hand. I generally use iphone earbuds. I've read that the samsung jacks are a slightly different size than standard. This might contribute to the problem.

Where did you read that Samsung jacks are a different size? I have used several different 3rd party headphones and have not had a single issue. They all fit and work perfectly.
If anything is made with a different size, I'd be much quicker to suspect Apple before Samsung. They love building proprietary hw so people will be forced to do things their way!
Have you tried a different brand of headphones? It is possible the jack itself is messed up somehow too though.

Honestly I've only tried my old and new iphone earbuds. Both have the same problem, but what I discovered by shaving the plastic away from the tip of the jack is that the further in it goes the more it cuts off, hence shoving paper into the hole to keep it from going in too far.
Another thing I did notice is that this problem started when the headphones became much looser. When I first bought the SGS3 I had to really push hard to get the headphones into the phone. I could literally drop the phone from my pocket and it wouldn't detach and would just dangle from my ears. Now it comes out really easily. Clearly something isn't gripping well enough. That seems to be the real issue I guess, but I have no idea how to get in there and fix it. I don't want to risk breaking my phone trying to take it apart.
sounds like the inside of the jack is messed up. When you were having to push hard to put them in, it most likely bent or wore out the part it snaps into over time.
Only real solution to that, that I can think of, would be to replace the jack I'm afraid.

It would be pretty easy to do BUT looking at the motherboard, 4 of the legs are covered by a metal plate (which is used to mount the proximity/light sensors)
Don't know whether that plate can be removed or not.

I have been having issues with my headphone jack. It started out with static on the headphone jacks and ended up becoming completely dead in a span of 2 months. Reading through many of the Google search results, I did what everyone suggested. Tightened the screws near the camera and then replaced the headphone jack assembly. I am still not able to make it work. The earpiece is working fine though. Any suggestions?

Are they are plugged in all the way?
If you push the headphone plug in a direction perpendicular to the jack (try several directions), does it make it any better/worse?
I had issues with my headphone jack and I just replaced it today and it works perfectly. Are you sure the cable connecting the jack to the motherboard is connected completely? You could also inspect the connector on the motherboard to make sure the connector looks in good shape with nothing bent, etc. If all is well and you are confident the replacement was good, I would say your motherboard could be bad...which is a little strange since your earpiece is working and it uses the same connection.
I give mine a good smack against a hard object. Usually just below the camera lens, and under the headphone jack works the best. I know it sounds like I'm joking, but seriously, give it a shot. I suspect the root cause is probably a loose connector, but I've never cracked mine open.

Try tightening the screws on the back of the phone. I have heard it can fix the loose connection.
