Hello everyone. So I'm new to t mo. I switched over from sprint. I picked up a galaxy note 3 last friday. I exchanged it today due to some freezing issues it was having. The new one I have is flawless, but surprisingly I notice some hardware differences from my last note.
This new exchange note 3 has a hole with a black plug to the right of the headphone jack, the original didnt. This one also has a small hole on the bottom right corner. Looks like a microphone hole, but slightly bigger.
Anyone have these on theirs? I'm wondering if it's a new hardware revision vs the old one without the holes. Maybe they help with reception ?
Anyone else also have these strange holes, one to the right of the head phone jack with a black plug, and one a small on to the bottom right corner of the phone.?
Also neither is a microphone hole because that's at the bottom left.
Thanks for the replies!

From what I know. They're both mics. Something to do with noise canceling.
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda premium
Top one is extra mic for noise cancelation. There should not be a plug. The bottom right one is supposed to be humidity and something else sensor. Some people say it is third noise cancelation mic but I don't think so. And one on bottom is correct. Main microphone hole.

Top is an IR port for controlling IR devices (TV, DVR, DVD etc)
The other is a second microphone which combine for noise-canceling. All note 3's should have them and in the manual for the device.
^^^ yeah what he said. Forgot the IR port thingy. It is further to the right side of phone. The small hole next to headphone jack is noise cancelation.

From my understanding the hole at the bottom right is not a third mic, it is for the thermometer and barometer.

Correct. I just tested this with a thermometer app and when I put my finger over the hole, the temp rose accordingly. Neat! I didn't know our phones had a temp sensor

FWIW, you don't need a separate app for that. You can use your dialer to access the "secret" samsung test menu by dialing "*#0*#", and then click Sensors. Temperature graphing is at the bottom.
edit: Guess I shouldn't have blown hot air on the hole for so long... as my humidity sensors been stuck at 100% for too long...... and... now it's dropping (phew)
Didnt know we had temp reader . Sweet. Although id rather use an app for that than fumble with the dialer and have to remember a code.

There is an app for that: S-Health; When you drop the menu down and select "Comfort Level" it provides Temp & Humidity as they relate to "Human Thermal Comfort" (ISO/FDIS 7730:2005) I find it amusing that people would rely on any device to tell them is they are comfortable, but the purpose is valid; to let you know factors that would affect a workout.
On another note, I was shocked how many Tech Reviews were stating the hole on the bottom right was "another" microphone, meanwhile they kept comparing the device to the S4, so for kick I would check the S4 review, and THERE they seemed to know it was a sensor. Strange.

In the disability community that kind of information can be invaluable if you can't feel if it is comfortable or not. Software can make use of the sensors to warn a user that they may be approaching a dangerous level of heat and humidity that they themselves may not be aware of.

Yesterday morning I received my grey One X and was surprised to hear a rather big handful of people complaining about a rattle. So, I (as you do) picked up my phone and began violently shaking it.... I couldn't hear anything - until I turned off my TV - yes, it REALLY is that quiet. So after around 45 seconds of investigating I discovered that it is coming from the volume rocker. Slightly touching the rocker whilst shaking it stops the rattle – Remember though, you will require BOTH hearing aids to be turned up to 11.
It is NOT a problem or a fault. Yes perhaps they could have designed it with some more resistance which would stop the very slight rattle... BUT then EVERYONE would then be complaining that it takes too much force to increase or decrease the volume.
So, to conclude, Can EVERYONE please STOP complaining about it! Who is actually going to be shaking their phone to their ear on normal day to day use? Exactly, no 1)
It just shows that if you want to find an issue with a device, you will. And everybody blames the camera without thinking of the two only movable parts on the phone
And maybe you could change the thread title to "HTC One X Rattle: A non issue" or something?
Good to see a bit of comic relief from these forums. I have been through all this before with all the *****ing and moaning about a new device, but this phone seems completely bad with the number of multiple threads on the same issue, and people making a mountain out of a molehill with other issues.
Makes me think of issues of last couple of devices I've had: Proximity sensor, battery cover poorly designed, screen tint, creaking, dust under screen, battery life, low speaker volume, tiny gaps on phone housing, not to mention software issues....the list goes on and on.

exactly... have experienced some of the issues in some way with: Desire, Desire HD and Sensation
Maybe with your device it is...With most of our devices it's the focus "ring" of the camera. Witch happens with all devices and their different models.
You have to have a quiet room and hold it next to your ear. Not really a problem. I'd like to think that instead of a problem, we've found another feature!...

I was being a tinnnny bit sarcastic
On my white One X it's not the volume rocker, nor the power button. It really is the camera.
Guys I know it probably seems annoying but I have had my SGS for a very long time and that had the flimsiest USB cover slider that had a mind of its own. It rattles a lot if it comes undone and believe me, it was a pain initially driving me mad at first but you get used to it. Honestly, I don't even begin to hear it now and I would bet its probably a lot louder lol. Be happy your phone works properly if that is your only issue Others are having a lot more trouble
On mine it is neither the buttons or lens bezel, and I doubt it is on anybody else's, either. My guess is it,s a focus element in the lens, or perhaps an orientation sensor.

Maybe its not the camera, but the SIM card inside the slot, or the slot itself? I remember reading some messages about some SIMs being too slim
Got it open no problem, using fingernails and an old mastercard.
I do not recommend anyone do this unless they are very familiar with doing similar tasks - there are a number of things that can go wrong and some very delicate connections that will break easily.
Been trying all the PWR, Vol+/- combos and plugging it into my PC via USB. Nothing happens, at all. Is this useful info? No device is seen.
Even tried a dummy SIM to push a small contact switch closed at the bottom of the SIM socket, still no effect.
I've taken some photos, and identified the various antennas if anyone is interested. I will add them shortly.

that topic is full off, warranty crap i would read the s-off development and see if anything is in there.
i opened mine, its quite hard to initially get the screen to pop out, i wouldnt recomend using anything other than finger nails or you will damage something
after you opened it the Power button and Vol button will fall out, dont dop them!
the power button and vol button have a certain orientation, took me ages to realise that the power button only fit one way
removing the mainboard is quite hard, you have to void the warranty and there is a connector that is allmost impossible to get off(next to the battery)
oh and when you pull the mainboard up it gets disconnected from the power button ribbon, so make sure you un-glue the internal power button (pull it up) before pulling up the mainboard
so yeah its hard
Question: What's the pinhole above the headset connector for? Where do you get through that? It's a microphone or not?
Thanx!

That's already been answered before: no. At least, not cheaply. The Gorilla cover glass is bonded in place, so replacing it will realistically involve replacing the entire screen assembly, which is a significant portion of the phone. (And good luck getting a replacement part that's not itself damaged.)
So how easy is it to replace the battery?
The Asgard said:

Tricky, but possible. The average user would mess it up though. If the connector were located differently, I'd say most could do it. But the connector is on the side of the board facing the screen, so it has to be lifted off to disconnect the battery.
The one major thing that would stop people doing this safely is the small power switch connection under the board that pops off (should be manually disconnected!) when the board is raised more than about 5mm. Assuming the user gets that far and the connector ribbon is not damaged from the pulling, the user then faces the challenge of reconnecting it - and they must or the phone will not power on! It can only be done when the board is almost back in place, using some very small tweezers and quite some skill.
The battery connector itself is relatively easy, but as I mentioned in another post, it comes off differently than you might expect, which leaves room for damage if it is forced. The battery itself is glued down, so must be forced off - again a risk for the inexperienced as you could damage the battery if excessive force is used from the wrong point, or worse, you could damage the delicate ribbon cables that lie under it if you try and pry it off with something by sliding under it.
So in summary: it is possible but only if you have experience with disassembling similar devices and putting them back properly. The margin for error is thin.

I have two kind of hard to see scuffs next to my headphone jack, I'm wondering if that's from missing and hitting the phone instead of getting it in the jack itself. I don't any scuffing. But from my observations, it looks like the paint job around this area isn't the greatest. I can see the potential for a bit of missing paint of a chip.
I'll take a picture and update this post later on.
Dishin out thanks like it's my birthday, thanks for the replies.
I'm rather disappointed, the point of my overpriced case was to keep this thing safe, between that and the easy-to-scratch screen, I think I'm going naked (not me personally...ugh trolls always say something about that).

I have a chip in the exact same place. My headphone jack also broke a few months ago. (the part that holds the input in wore out) I just replaced it though. Works great now!
I figured out where mine came from- you know how OEMs like to make their phones look badass, so often you see the headphone plug itself sticks out on one side as part of the curve of the phone.
My scuffing is from my Beats right angle plug grinding against the part of the phone that sticks out the most (upper left side if looking at the headphone jack straight on) as part of my "turn the wire out of the way so it doesn't bend against the plug and my pocket" campaign.
Sooo...BEATS RIGHT ANGLE HEADPHONE WIRES DAMAGE GALNEXES. There it is.

LOL. I have a chip in the same spot, same size it appears too. Happened from my headphones (duh), the little metal part that sticks out from the plug is what caused it from rotating the headphones, sucks, but it's a common issue, happened on my Nexus S too, and will probably happen on the LG Nexus from the shape of the headphone port so I'll be putting a very thin piece of clear tape or something on the headphone jack of the next Nexus or my headphones to prevent it. OP you may as well accept it as a feature or something, gives it character lol.

Actually it did happen on my Nexus One as well from what I remember because the metal piece of the headphones sat right on top of the Nexus One's aluminum body so turning the headphones would scuff it up and eventually leave little indents. Unless the phone has a little headphone guard kinda thing around the jack (only example I can think of right now would be the SGS3's headphone jack, it has a little black outlined plastic circle) chances are your headphones will scuff the paint/body
Off topic: Why do people think HTC products = high quality, just because they use aluminum? They may feel nice, but most HTC phones I used in my experience were the worst with dust getting inside the screen and such (the Sensation was a nightmare) and their phones have just as much issues as other OEMs. Haven't actually used an HTC phone in awhile so I don't know if they've improved or not, but I always felt it was a hit or miss with their phones.
Sorry for the rant :/

I was incredibly disappointed with the Thunderbolt, I was hyped up about it all the way back in 2010 when rumors of a Droid Incredible HD started circulating with the Droid Terminator. I thought it was perfect. I thought it was perfect when I got it. Now, over a year later, I'm safely done with HTC. Updates are sporatic, the kickstand peeled its outer coating easily, hell I opened up the battery cover to find a bunch of sand! How in the world did that happen?!
The 8MP camera was worse than my GalNex's 5MP shooter, it was fat because of the LTE, the Radio setup for simultaneous voice and data over 3G made it impossible for devs to update Android themselves, it had 768mb of RAM. 768. What. The. ****. Too cheap to go 1024, that's what that says to me.

I've had a note2 since day1 and the spen on my note2 always acted weird at the edge of the screen. It is impossible to draw a straight line on the right side of the screen. It's hard to describe the problem so I actually drew a couple of lines on the right side of the screen as well as on the left side of the screen for comparison. I uploaded a screenshot showing the difference. I want to know if anyone else can test this using their note2 to see whether this is just a limitation of the spen accuracy or if my note2 is defective.

I cant post a screenshot because usb mass storage mode doesnt work right on linux so id have to email the note i made an i dunno how to do that at this time.
However I tried to make straight lines on the right side moving the spen from lower left to upper right and they had the same hump yours did although not as pronounced.
And then I concentrated and very slowly and deliberately made straight lines again on the right side starting from upper right to lower left and they were near perfect just like the lines on the left side.
My conclusion for what its worth is I think the hum my be a natural variation in your hands movement translated through the stylus. Cause when I really concentrated on drawing a straight line. I did .... no problem.
So I dont think its the device itself. I think your hands wants to naturally curve to the right creating that hump in the point of referrence in the line.

as much as I'd like to believe that is the case, It wasn't. The first set of lines i drew on the left side, and then i rotated the phone 180 degrees and drew lines on the right side (which is now the left side since its upside down) in the same manner.
Also, its not only S Note that this happens in; this issue also occurs in Sketchbook mobile, Draw something... etc. Basically any app that I can draw with the spen is when this problem becomes noticeable.
Edit: I just tried again using a ruler to try and make a couple of straight lines and the same thing occurred so its definitely not natural variation lol
I get this too. If you go slowly in a straight line you can see the drawing point migrate upwards, deviating from the actual pen point, before coming back down as you near the edge...hence the hump. Software or hardware issue?
Mine occurs much closer to the edge of the screen and less severely though compared to yours. On the s note grid pad the hump peaks at about 2.5units from the edge.
not very noticeable on sketchbook but it's still there. Here are 3 screen shots.

I'm fairly confident now this is a software problem. I did a factory reset and I can draw straight lines now. However, considering there is no calibration option for the spen, I'm assuming the software "learns" how you write and auto calibrates accordingly. That's probably why over time the center becomes incredibly accurate and the edges start to suck. I could be wrong though.

Interesting that a software update fixes it, there's been a few discussions of this (I've been following the Note II since it was announced) on the international Note II forums... And the conclusion they came up with is that the wacom digitizer isn't very accurate near the edges because well, the bezels aren't that large and yet it has to be able to detect like the S-pen hovering, and there was discussion about this being a problem on lots of wacom tablets, etc. Although intresting that yours works now after factory reset
Luckyly I haven't experienced this issue with mine...

2 days old note 2
got my note 2 two days ago and it has the same problem on the middle right part of the screen, i don't know whether its from the spen or the screen itself.. has anyone found a solution? i'm gonna take it to the shop today and see if its software related.. otherwise then i'll make them give me a new one :crying:
After receiving my new Note 3 a few days ago and setting it up I hadn't even really used the s-pen until yesterday. I noticed that vertically down the middle of the display from top to bottom there is about a 1/4 inch area that the s-pen 'avoids' or 'skips across' when swiping it from side to side. At first I thought maybe it was just the pen tip, so I replaced it. It's hard to explain but the effect I get when hovering it across this area is almost like a magnet avoiding another magnet, it jumps across in front of itself (the dot) and will simply not work properly in this area. Let me try to explain like this: If I were drawing a line on the screen from the bottom left corner to the top right, when I get to this 'magnetic' or 'dead' area the line no longer becomes diagonal but skips up vertically then jumps across to the other side of the dead spot, then lets me continue drawing the diagonal line to the top right corner.. Make sense?
From what I read on howstuff works, the waycom stylus and screens work with some sort of a magnetic field, which would explain why the effect i'm getting is like holding two magnets with same charges they repel, if in fact it's a defective area on the magnetic field under the glass surface.. (Howstuffworks Source)
Is it the wacom layer of the display? I am not using a magnetic case or anything else of the sort. I debated calling T-Mobile and trying to explain this to a customer service rep, and I figure it will be near impossible to get my point across. I am considering just going to the T-Mobile store down the street and trying to get a replacement.
Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? Test your screen with the diagonal line test and see for yourself. I'm curious as to this being a rare defect or a more common one. I'm considering putting up a video because it's so weird..
Edit: I have attached a screenshot to display the dead area that the line skips across sideways.. with the action memo, draw something 2 and sketchbook to diagram the avoidance area on the screen

I tried recreating that and I didn't get the same results. I used both snote and sketchbook

I'm fairly certain it's just something bad in my unit.. Thanks for making the attempt though
Yeah try to exchange. Definitely defective.

Well I called and explained the problem to the tech support rep. Thankfully they were also an owner of the note 3 and were sympathetic to the issue and understood what I meant. Replacement on the way, hopefully the original post is helpful to others experiencing odd problems with their spen and display..

I'm curious on how you replaced the tip so quickly.

tips should have been included with your note 3. You just pull out the one in your pen, and push in a new one. simple.
I've disassembled my note 4 and after putting it back together there were two strips on the screen where the spen couldn't write after *#0*# and testing wacom layer it turned out it didn't work (in those two mentioned strips).
Apparently the adhesive (the dumb manufacturing engineers at samsung) used for securing the glass in the frame prevented the gorilla glass from properly aligning on the frame. After I heated up the glass and clamped it to the frame for a few minutes the wacom layer started working again!
Apparently the layer doesn't work/has difficulty working properly when the glass is skewed/not aligned (or sth). Thought I share this in case sb else had a similar issue.
I have a nice circular spot in my screen that is a dead zone for the pen. Works fine for touch input though.
Just for future references, if you go to phone keypad and type *#0*# you will get diagnostic screen with various tests of all the hardware inside, including Viacom test and spen hovering. This may not work with some custom roms.

It didn't work with Dominion rom. Ended up getting fixed with the battery pull I did to get my new SView cover working.
Possible fix
For those who still own a Galaxy Note 3, and have either a GPS issue, or this s-pen issue, (I had both simulataneously) this video (although in another language than English) Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 bad GPS Signal SOLVED (can't post vid link because XDA thinks it is potential spam since this is my first comment ever here) is what I did for GPS fix. At the 5:10 mark, or so he is gently levering up those little connectors/stems. They don't make good contact. Earlier in the video he shows how something gets disconnected. That's obvious. On the other side of the phone) is similar connectors/stems. I did the same thing to those.
I put it all back together. GPS works and s-pen dead spots are gone. Also, I blew clean ports and the board with photo air blower. Forgive any wrong terminology.
Hope this helps someone.
