After receiving my new Note 3 a few days ago and setting it up I hadn't even really used the s-pen until yesterday. I noticed that vertically down the middle of the display from top to bottom there is about a 1/4 inch area that the s-pen 'avoids' or 'skips across' when swiping it from side to side. At first I thought maybe it was just the pen tip, so I replaced it. It's hard to explain but the effect I get when hovering it across this area is almost like a magnet avoiding another magnet, it jumps across in front of itself (the dot) and will simply not work properly in this area. Let me try to explain like this: If I were drawing a line on the screen from the bottom left corner to the top right, when I get to this 'magnetic' or 'dead' area the line no longer becomes diagonal but skips up vertically then jumps across to the other side of the dead spot, then lets me continue drawing the diagonal line to the top right corner.. Make sense?
From what I read on howstuff works, the waycom stylus and screens work with some sort of a magnetic field, which would explain why the effect i'm getting is like holding two magnets with same charges they repel, if in fact it's a defective area on the magnetic field under the glass surface.. (Howstuffworks Source)
Is it the wacom layer of the display? I am not using a magnetic case or anything else of the sort. I debated calling T-Mobile and trying to explain this to a customer service rep, and I figure it will be near impossible to get my point across. I am considering just going to the T-Mobile store down the street and trying to get a replacement.
Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? Test your screen with the diagonal line test and see for yourself. I'm curious as to this being a rare defect or a more common one. I'm considering putting up a video because it's so weird..
Edit: I have attached a screenshot to display the dead area that the line skips across sideways.. with the action memo, draw something 2 and sketchbook to diagram the avoidance area on the screen

I'm fairly certain it's just something bad in my unit.. Thanks for making the attempt though
Yeah try to exchange. Definitely defective.

Well I called and explained the problem to the tech support rep. Thankfully they were also an owner of the note 3 and were sympathetic to the issue and understood what I meant. Replacement on the way, hopefully the original post is helpful to others experiencing odd problems with their spen and display..

tips should have been included with your note 3. You just pull out the one in your pen, and push in a new one. simple.
I've disassembled my note 4 and after putting it back together there were two strips on the screen where the spen couldn't write after *#0*# and testing wacom layer it turned out it didn't work (in those two mentioned strips).
Apparently the adhesive (the dumb manufacturing engineers at samsung) used for securing the glass in the frame prevented the gorilla glass from properly aligning on the frame. After I heated up the glass and clamped it to the frame for a few minutes the wacom layer started working again!
Apparently the layer doesn't work/has difficulty working properly when the glass is skewed/not aligned (or sth). Thought I share this in case sb else had a similar issue.
I have a nice circular spot in my screen that is a dead zone for the pen. Works fine for touch input though.
Just for future references, if you go to phone keypad and type *#0*# you will get diagnostic screen with various tests of all the hardware inside, including Viacom test and spen hovering. This may not work with some custom roms.

It didn't work with Dominion rom. Ended up getting fixed with the battery pull I did to get my new SView cover working.
Possible fix
For those who still own a Galaxy Note 3, and have either a GPS issue, or this s-pen issue, (I had both simulataneously) this video (although in another language than English) Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 bad GPS Signal SOLVED (can't post vid link because XDA thinks it is potential spam since this is my first comment ever here) is what I did for GPS fix. At the 5:10 mark, or so he is gently levering up those little connectors/stems. They don't make good contact. Earlier in the video he shows how something gets disconnected. That's obvious. On the other side of the phone) is similar connectors/stems. I did the same thing to those.
I put it all back together. GPS works and s-pen dead spots are gone. Also, I blew clean ports and the board with photo air blower. Forgive any wrong terminology.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi
A few days ago in college i was carrying my mate's Desire (in fact, he, myself and another friend there at the time all have them) and dropped it acidentally from about three or four feet. The digitiser/screen broke, shattered quite badly and i felt awful, so i offered to see how i could help in getting it replaced.
Carphone Warehouse wanted £170, we fixed it for <£30.
We decided it couldn't be too difficult to fix ourselves, and being young and inquisitive and very geeky we set about fixing the screen. The AMOLED hadn't bust, it was just the digitiser and from what we had heard it wasn't too difficult to fix. My friend Jed, not the guy who the original smashed Desire belonged to (that was James) had a bit of experience in the area so we weren't totally gung-ho about it. We knew we had to order parts so we did so from Ebay, and paid something like £1.60 for extra-speedy delivery - and then it was time to crack (s'cuse the pun) on.
We took some photos for our own interest, and i thought here would be a good place to see them so other people as enthusiastic about phones as i am could peruse them at their leisure All of the photos were captured with an HTC Desire.
UNFORTUNATELY, we didn't have the common sense to take a photo of the phone before we fixed it, so no before and after shots i'm afraid
Stuff we needed:
Screwdrivers (A small phillips and a torx 6 i think, it was really small anyway - there may have been more)
Cotton buds/pads
Isopropanol (lots)
Tweezers
All in all, it wasn't a difficult job, just one which required patience and forethought. It took Jed and myself three hours, and for unqualified teenagers i think that's about okay. Any questions, be sure to ask.

Just a picture for size reference, we outlined the phone on my Moleskine (hipster, i know i know) so we could remember where screws went.
A close-up of the rear input (USB & Microphone) panel, with microSD and SIM slot.
Jed, removing the rear input panel type thing.
Rear input panel removed, exposing the lower PCB (which is removable).
Entire rear protection panel removed, exposing the Desire's sexy internals.
Close-up of CMOS sensor and antenna.
Unscrewing the main PCB for removal.
CMOS and antenna as above, different angle though.
CMOS sensor and antenna again from a different angle, while we're trying to remove the volume keys (which was SERIOUSLY f*cking difficult.)
Removing the rear input PCB, this was fiddly but fairly straightforward.
Another shot of the lower PCB coming out.
The furry stuff is the remnants of the glue that stuck the digitiser on, it took forever to get off.
AMOLED and touchscreen input port disconnection, which was super fiddly but easy enough.
The phone's main PCB resting on the box in which the digitiser came, for safe-keeping.
Slowly lifting the AMOLED, which was scary.
Old, cracked digitiser. You can faintly make out the damage, all of the top left side had completely shattered.
External front panel, with digitiser removed. You can make out some black furry stuff, which is the glue that held the original digitiser in place. This was the hardest part of the job as we had to make sure ALL of it came off. Isopropanol and cotton buds were needed, as well as sharp flat metal things to scrape off the glue. A LOT of Isopropanol was used.
New digitiser is laid in place and everything's re-assembled, all that's left to do is stick it in.
Final comparison shot, comparing the phone with a replaced digitiser or touch screen with one that never got hurt. Not too bad, if i do say so myself.
Wow great job!
Definitely a useful guide.
Agreed.
Awesome job!
Would you mind letting me know where you got it from and how much the digitizer cost?

very interested in this as well!
nice job onthe post btw!
Nice post, always interested in how things come apart and more importantly go back together again.
Nice job!!
Nice description! I'm wondering if there is a digitizer out there that supports "real" multitouch capabilities for our Desire? Would this work (also in aspect to software needings)? Anyone knows?
The digitiser was found on eBay after a quick search for 'HTC Desire Digitiser', and we just looked for ones that mentioned they were for the Bravo, which of course was the Desire's codename. The digitiser itself cost about £25, which was pretty much the cheapest we could find - the seller was exquisite, with 100% positive feedback and hundreds of sales, they were solely selling phone parts.
£25 is really, really cheap when some people we spoke to about getting it fixed wanted over £150
What a great guide. Thanks so much!
You had a screen protector before the break?
While the digitizer supports "real" multitouch i really think it's the chip that decodes those touches that is to blame for our lack of "true" multitouch.
I'm looking at doing the same project. What did you use to stick the digitizer back? I've seen some people use super glue and some people use strong double sided tape.
Good job took me 3 hours to fix mine lol getting it back together was the hardest part great step by step tho

Very curious about this too (wifes shattered screen) it's the only part that I'm not confident about - one used double sided tape sliced into 2mm strips (http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-tear-down#Finishing).

Anyone know if the Xoom supports using a stylus? If yes, which stylus and app do you recommend?
Thanks!!
i made one at my house. ill write up a how to.
OK so you take the tip and the back off a old pen so it looks like a straw.

Then you take ESD foam or conductive foam and wrap wire around it.
Put the wire into the pen and pull it all the way till you get a nice tip of foam sticking out.
Then jsut wrap the wire so you figres will touch it and bam a working Stylus.
Its not the best looking but with time it can be better.
Im sure a metal pen would work the best. Ill have to find one around here and try.
That's a pretty sweet home made stylus
But i've been looking for a fine tipped stylus to use with drawing apps. With my finger, I can never tell exactly where my lines will go and I'm assuming it would be the same with your solution and all of the rubber tipped stylus I've seen.
Can't someone make like a silicon tip or something so its like pen or a sharpened pencil?

I Bought One That Works Well
This is the one I purchased on Friday. It works very well. Now I just need to find a great note taking (hand written notes and possibly text input) app and I’m all set.
http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Stylus-iPhone-Tablet-AMM01US/dp/B003ZSHKIY
Targus sells them in different colors besides black.
An app I found the other day was "MaplePaint" https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mapleworks&feature=search_result
I am wanting to get a stylus to try out with it. Not sure though, as it seems to not be quite sensitive enough for real handwriting. And, when putting my hand down on the screen like on a piece of paper it messes with it a bit.
I'd be curious to know how it goes when used with a stylus.
-Loc
I picked up a stylus this afternoon. The Targus one.
http://www.targus.com/us/productdet...el1=products&cp=&bannertxt=Stylus For Tablets
The stylus is great, and does a great job doing what it does. Feedback is good. But, I worry about the sensitivity of the digitizer on the XOOM. The lettering is not very accurate in any drawing app I try and things like dots (periods, the dots on 'i' or 'j') do not show up at all.
I check out videos on youtube for iPad apps that do drawing or note taking functions and these do not seem to have any issues. I wonder if it is the digitizer or just the apps not being optimized....
Anyway, stylus gets a thumbs up.
-Loc
I have noticed that if you are using any sort of screen protector it reduces the sensitivity of the stylus.
Not using a screen protector. No need with Gorilla Glass.

where is the best stylus?
just ordered this:

hope it works for taking notes in class..
I just ordered an O-stylus ... http://ostylus.com/ ... I gather there is a bit of a "knack" to it ... but seems to be the best for "seeing what you are doing" in a drawing/note taking scenario. I'll let you know what I think
You could also go with this one http://www.dealextreme.com/p/aluminum-alloy-touchpad-stylus-pen-for-apple-ipad-ipad-2-black-57797 . I just ordered one and it looks well built. The last one I had didn't have the taper like this one has which is ideal for not risking scratching the screen. Also it's a great price!

I've had a note2 since day1 and the spen on my note2 always acted weird at the edge of the screen. It is impossible to draw a straight line on the right side of the screen. It's hard to describe the problem so I actually drew a couple of lines on the right side of the screen as well as on the left side of the screen for comparison. I uploaded a screenshot showing the difference. I want to know if anyone else can test this using their note2 to see whether this is just a limitation of the spen accuracy or if my note2 is defective.

I cant post a screenshot because usb mass storage mode doesnt work right on linux so id have to email the note i made an i dunno how to do that at this time.
However I tried to make straight lines on the right side moving the spen from lower left to upper right and they had the same hump yours did although not as pronounced.
And then I concentrated and very slowly and deliberately made straight lines again on the right side starting from upper right to lower left and they were near perfect just like the lines on the left side.
My conclusion for what its worth is I think the hum my be a natural variation in your hands movement translated through the stylus. Cause when I really concentrated on drawing a straight line. I did .... no problem.
So I dont think its the device itself. I think your hands wants to naturally curve to the right creating that hump in the point of referrence in the line.

as much as I'd like to believe that is the case, It wasn't. The first set of lines i drew on the left side, and then i rotated the phone 180 degrees and drew lines on the right side (which is now the left side since its upside down) in the same manner.
Also, its not only S Note that this happens in; this issue also occurs in Sketchbook mobile, Draw something... etc. Basically any app that I can draw with the spen is when this problem becomes noticeable.
Edit: I just tried again using a ruler to try and make a couple of straight lines and the same thing occurred so its definitely not natural variation lol
I get this too. If you go slowly in a straight line you can see the drawing point migrate upwards, deviating from the actual pen point, before coming back down as you near the edge...hence the hump. Software or hardware issue?
Mine occurs much closer to the edge of the screen and less severely though compared to yours. On the s note grid pad the hump peaks at about 2.5units from the edge.
not very noticeable on sketchbook but it's still there. Here are 3 screen shots.

I'm fairly confident now this is a software problem. I did a factory reset and I can draw straight lines now. However, considering there is no calibration option for the spen, I'm assuming the software "learns" how you write and auto calibrates accordingly. That's probably why over time the center becomes incredibly accurate and the edges start to suck. I could be wrong though.

Interesting that a software update fixes it, there's been a few discussions of this (I've been following the Note II since it was announced) on the international Note II forums... And the conclusion they came up with is that the wacom digitizer isn't very accurate near the edges because well, the bezels aren't that large and yet it has to be able to detect like the S-pen hovering, and there was discussion about this being a problem on lots of wacom tablets, etc. Although intresting that yours works now after factory reset
Luckyly I haven't experienced this issue with mine...

Hello everyone. So I'm new to t mo. I switched over from sprint. I picked up a galaxy note 3 last friday. I exchanged it today due to some freezing issues it was having. The new one I have is flawless, but surprisingly I notice some hardware differences from my last note.
This new exchange note 3 has a hole with a black plug to the right of the headphone jack, the original didnt. This one also has a small hole on the bottom right corner. Looks like a microphone hole, but slightly bigger.
Anyone have these on theirs? I'm wondering if it's a new hardware revision vs the old one without the holes. Maybe they help with reception ?
Anyone else also have these strange holes, one to the right of the head phone jack with a black plug, and one a small on to the bottom right corner of the phone.?
Also neither is a microphone hole because that's at the bottom left.
Thanks for the replies!

From what I know. They're both mics. Something to do with noise canceling.

Top one is extra mic for noise cancelation. There should not be a plug. The bottom right one is supposed to be humidity and something else sensor. Some people say it is third noise cancelation mic but I don't think so. And one on bottom is correct. Main microphone hole.

Top is an IR port for controlling IR devices (TV, DVR, DVD etc)
The other is a second microphone which combine for noise-canceling. All note 3's should have them and in the manual for the device.
^^^ yeah what he said. Forgot the IR port thingy. It is further to the right side of phone. The small hole next to headphone jack is noise cancelation.

From my understanding the hole at the bottom right is not a third mic, it is for the thermometer and barometer.

FWIW, you don't need a separate app for that. You can use your dialer to access the "secret" samsung test menu by dialing "*#0*#", and then click Sensors. Temperature graphing is at the bottom.
edit: Guess I shouldn't have blown hot air on the hole for so long... as my humidity sensors been stuck at 100% for too long...... and... now it's dropping (phew)
Didnt know we had temp reader . Sweet. Although id rather use an app for that than fumble with the dialer and have to remember a code.

There is an app for that: S-Health; When you drop the menu down and select "Comfort Level" it provides Temp & Humidity as they relate to "Human Thermal Comfort" (ISO/FDIS 7730:2005) I find it amusing that people would rely on any device to tell them is they are comfortable, but the purpose is valid; to let you know factors that would affect a workout.
On another note, I was shocked how many Tech Reviews were stating the hole on the bottom right was "another" microphone, meanwhile they kept comparing the device to the S4, so for kick I would check the S4 review, and THERE they seemed to know it was a sensor. Strange.

In the disability community that kind of information can be invaluable if you can't feel if it is comfortable or not. Software can make use of the sensors to warn a user that they may be approaching a dangerous level of heat and humidity that they themselves may not be aware of.

These are awesome, I have a few I use with my chromebook plus.. Might be thinking about picking up a tab s3 as well. ?
I'm currently using the Staedtler Noris Digital Pen and it's a pretty good replacement for the too-small S-Pen that was shipped with the S3.
Replacement tip
I really have to make a comment here. I was looking for replacement tips when I first bought my tablet so I could work out how roughly I could use my stylus. I bought these tips from eBay and found they are far better than the originals. Both in endurance and use. I bought these as Samsung had none available at the time.

They have a couple in stock etc
I just bought the Wacom Bamboo stylus Feel and it does work with the S3, but it is slightly off by a millimeter or so (even after changing several replacement nibs). It seems to work best with the stylus in a near vertical position, but it is really hard to write that way . Oh, the Wacom also cannot activate the soft buttons outside the screen the way the original stylus can.
It's not too bad for writing in general, but I won't recommend it for precision drawing. I seem to get the best results with Onenote rather than other writing apps.
The original S3 stylus is still the most accurate. Maybe I got a stylus that is slightly defective or the new S3 digitizer reacts differently to old versions of the stylus (different levels of sensitivity and all that).

I had the same issue with my original nib. My new one is out by same amount and have been wondering if there was a way to realign it.

After doing more research, I applied the fixes recommended in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2662203
I had to do both the stylus calibration (pop off the button cover and turn the knobs for calibration and sensitivity) as well as the shaving off the tip of the pen trick. The calibration gets the stylus to point to the same spot on the screen (but at 90 degree angle, use the *#0*# hardware tests for S-Pen to be more accurate). The sensitivity fix helps the stylus activate the off-screen soft buttons (Yay!). Finally the shaving off the tip minimizes the off-set when using the stylus at an angle. I finally got the stylus to be near perfect (it's still like 0.5 mm off, but that's good enough for me).
Hopefully this would work for you too!

That s pen is a proper pen size. Noris is also for tab S3 and galaxy book. Thats more of a pencil standard. Idiota
The Staedler Norris Digital works fine. No erase button though.
