[Q] Stylus - Does it work & recommendations?

hi,
i'm looking for a stylus for SG SII. I just wanted to make sure it will work on the touchscreen & if anyone had any recommendations?

You'll be looking for a capacitive stylus as normal resistive will not work. A search for capacitive stylus on eBay gives you plenty of options but as I've never used one myself I can't really make any recommendations

I am using ELAGO slim design stylus... works perfectly as i am using graffiti input as my text input method during meetings.

My old Pogo slylus (originally designed for iphone 3gs) works just fine, but it does have "these" days sometimes when its not working at all.
Usually the screen response is around 95% to stylus touch
the menu/back keys respons is around 5-10% to stylus touch = no point trying, almost never works

its rather tiny and light, but you cant rly precict when it will go emo on you and stop working.

didnt find a need for a stylus yet.
even typing is easy with the SGS2

My experience with capacitive stylus.
If it is not a quality capasitive stylus then I do not personally recommend any other and that is for 2 reasons:
1. The touch responce of the screen is outstanding!!!
2. I had a not so good experience myself, when I buyed from Spiderfoot a pack which contained 2 spare batteries (1800mAh fakes btw), a charger (surprisingly good enaugh to charge any battery!) and a capasitive stylus as a gift . I attached a pic of it.
So the stylus after minutes of use does respond but it leaves pieces of rubber on the screen! And even worse if you try it on top of a screen protector the results are devastating!!!
That's my experience and I thouht I should share it with you! Hope it helps you make a decision that you won't regret afterwards!

Im going to hunt around for my plecktrum one i had for my nokia 5800 think it will fit on the part on the phone for decorative stuff!

Has anyone had any luck finding a good stylus that works with our s2?

I am wondering if the stylus for the Galaxy Note would work well on the I9100.
Looking for a stylus to allow faster Japanese and Chinese character typing (I am in a multilingual environment).

I have just purchased a Kuel stylus from ebay, very nice, small, but extends to a pen size length. My only gripe is that the rubber head is still quite large, though it is smaller than all the other capacative stylus I have seen/owned. Not sure why, but I've not seen a sharp (without being sharp enough to score the screen) ended stylus, maybe something to do with how capacative stylus work.

Have to say them Kuel ones do look rather nice, but i can see what you mean about the wide tip, it does look rather bulbous.

it is a bit smaller than all the other capacative stylus I've tried though. The tip style seems to be a neccessary in this style of stylus.

I'm using Dagi P101 model, can draw really nicely with it also. Been using it with glows on without any hustle at all. It's a slim and nice and above all I can see what I'm doing with it as the tip is transparent.
On daily bases I don't need it, bit if I'm to sketch/draw or use my phone on bellow zero temps, it's quite nice.

Stylus?

I saw the C-Pen and thought it was pretty cool but I don't want to pay $30 for something I won't use very often. Does anyone (who has a stylus) have any recommendations for this particular device? I notice the touch area needs to be much smaller than it did on my previous devices. Pretty awesome!

That one seems to want to be a pen first and a stylus second. Not only is the stylus tip HUGE, it's stuck on the same end as the clip, which means it won't be very nice to hold.

Yea, I have the MediaDevil MagicWand and it works great for my Tablet, and decently enough for the GS3, but I'm looking for something with a smaller tip. That Samsung one looks perfect!

I too am looking for one with a smaller tip, but I'm also looking for one that doesn't cost $30. It's useful, but for me, it's more of a minor convenience to have.

I've always been wary of the Jot Pen just because it looks like it might be more prone to causing scratching than the other nub capacitive pens. How's your experience with it in that regard?

I just ordered a universal stylus for 6$ and it comes with a free skin from amazon.
Don't spend too much on one, u can make your own with some electricaly conductive styrafoam (used to ship computer chips). Just hollow out a pen and stuff it in there.

So I ordered the Galasy S III C-Pen and unfortunately it isn't working out that well. I have a Zagg InvisibleSHIELD installed and I guess the semi tackiness of the protector doesn't let the pen move around as smoothly as it should. It works great for normal pointing & whatnot, but if you're drawing or something, it isn't too precise. If you don't have a screen protector then you probably don't have to worry about it.
Also another big negative (my fault for not doing some research first I guess) is that it doesn't work with any other of my devices. Tried it on my Acer Iconia a500 tablet & Galaxy Nexus and it doesn't work at all. I figured "Replacement for using fingers on your tablet or smartphone touchscreen" meant I could use it on other devices as well. Think I'm just going to get my money back on it. :/

With the glass on this phone I don't think it should be a problem at all.

Just got my Hand stylus in the mail but dont need it anymore.

I have the Samsung c-pen and it works great since I don't have a screen protector. It also costs 20.00 on Amazon.

I have been using the C-pen. I got it off Amazon for $22. I don't use a screen protector, my phone is "naked", and to be honest, I really like it, but it's hit and miss. And what I don't think people realize is that it depends on the software using the stylus. This was something I didn't expect. I thought it would perform roughly the same on all apps. Using Adobe Reader to make freehand notes, I would find dead spots, where the pen just wouldn't work. But then if I touched the screen, then went back to that spot, it would work again.
The two best apps I have found, and the two use the most, (both work quite well with the C-pen) are SketchBook Mobile, and Genial 2. SBM is for drawing, and Genial is for note taking. I have had buyers remorse at times, but not enough to send it back.
It looks really nice, and I love the way it feels. I think the only other 2 options I would consider are HandStylus, and Jot. Anything else is really just another variation of the same thing. The nice part about the other two is if you ever change phones, or have a tablet, you can use your stylus on it. The C-pen only works with your GS3.

I've been using that popular cheap $5 stylus with the round rubber tip, it finally broke and the tip is loose.
I mainly use the stylus for swype text input, and general navigation, no drawing. What would be the ideal stylus for the galaxy s3? I'd like to be able to use it on the soft menu and back buttons too. I like a soft tip, not hard like the C pen (which i saw in the review does not work on the soft menu buttons).
Has anyone used the iFaraday stylus ( http://www.ifaraday.com/ )? That seems like my first choice right now, it would be nice to know if it works on the soft menu buttons.

I just bought a cheap three pack of stylus' off Amazon for ~$1 w/ free shipping. Being plastic, they're much lighter than my old aluminum Boxwave pen, but they're functionally equivalent and nice enough in quality (especially for only ONE DOLLAR )
Not worth overpaying for these things, IMO.

Yep that's the one i have. It does work great for being so cheap, slides on the screen pretty easily. You really need to tap hard on the soft buttons for it to work which was kind of a hassle. Also my tip became loose after a month.
The iFaraday has a cloth tip and requires very little pressure (according to the website). So it should slide on the screen a little better, and since it operates with light pressure, i'm guessing it should work on the soft menu buttons. It's $12 + shipping and theres a 30 day money back guarantee which isn't too bad.

From what I heard, Samsung is supposed to be releasing a variant of the S-Pen for the GSIII like the one on the note? I could be wrong but I remember hearing this in a Tech conference video a little while back.

That'd be impossible, since the S3 doesn't have a Wacom digitizer built into the display like the Galaxy Note's do. Maybe the S4 will have it.

Yes I know it doesnt have the digitizer but they said they will be releasing a variant that uses the capacitive Technology. I don't know if it was just a marketing fluke. But I will try to find the video when I get home.

How old was this video? Mabey it was the samsung C pen they were referring to? From the video reviews i've seen of the C pen it looks like an overpriced piece of junk.

Apparently the C-pen only works on the SIII so I assume there is something special about it that makes it better for the SIII.

The C pen works partially on other devices with highly sensitivity screens like the galaxy s3. It works on the note if you press hard. Which shows theres no special screen technology unlike the note and its stylus.

Best stylus for the Samsung Galaxy s3?

Looking to get a pretty good stylus for the SGS3. Mainly because I dont really like touching the screens on touchscreens, for extended uses of time with my fingers. Usually my fingers get hot or sore from doing it for awhile.
Which is why I feel a stylus will come in handy. Anyone here know of any good ones that I can buy for the SGS3? Something that isn't too big, and isn't too small either. Just right.
And I assume that a stylus will work fine over a screen protector, right? I just purchased the Skinomi screen protector(along with the galaxy s3) off of amazon. but haven't decided on what stylus i should get yet

I've tried a few stylus', from cheapo plastic crap (3 for $1), to overpriced aluminum Boxwaves, but finally found THE BEST, IMO: the NewTrent Retractable stylus with micro-knit tip ($10 for 2 pens). I've also bought a nice 9900mAh external battery from NewTrent 2 years ago which still holds up, so they're not some unknown company.
This pen glides over the screen like butter (as long as you don't have a rubbery screen protector like Skinomi), because unlike most pens with a rubber nip, this one has a very fine conductive mesh fabric wrapped over its tip. Being retractable is also a plus to protect the tip. This'll be one of my stocking stuffer gifts to family this year.

I would actually prefer a fine tip one myself. but i dont think that have one.

Check out the official Samsung c pen stylus 3mm tip and is designed specifically for the s3 so it won't work on anything else. Also kinda pricey. But it suppose to bring a note like experience

Only works without a screen protector, and also kinda sporadic, look up some Youtube videos and you'll see its not worth it unless you keep your screen naked.

i have the stylus from SGP and it feels nice and its retractable. very smooth gliding, i use it for the nexus 7

leather shaped stylus is my favorite.

Now that I think about it, a one with a fine tip would be pretty damn good. Im gonna check some more on google(though I honestly havent had much luck finding finetips that work well for the SGS3, that would also work on say a "Skinomi screen protector") , but if anyone has any more suggestions, feel free to post your input:laugh:

the reason it is there (and why MOST are so dang big in general) is that a capacitive screen (like ours) needs a large contact patch, and then it puts the "touch" in the center of the patch. the disk is a clear, transparent patch, that puts the "touch" where the tiny ball is. you quickly don't even see the disk.
On a bare screen it is effortless. on some of the screen protectors (the "sticky" ones) it kinda drags... but so does your finger.

I've got the C-Pen, and it was a bit hit-or miss at first. I found that if you unscrew the barrel and fit a length of wire (I used a large paperclip, cut to size), it's much more conductive. I'm tempted to try fitting in a small battery to see what that does.

I too use one of Adonit's styluses (the Jot pro to be more precise...no pun intended...) and I swear by it. I had tried one of those "knobby" ones before and i just returned it.
One thing to note: DON'T use a wet-application type screen protector with this one. It will make it plainly unusable. I had a Skinomi protector and I had to throw it away...

wait... that is EXACTLY what i have, and it woks fine. (the jot, and a wet type) perhaps the skinomi is just crap.

I'm looking for a good stylus mostly for sketching/doodling, so I want it to be responsive and with a small tip. Adonis Jot looks like my kind of thing but I'm not crazy about the disc.

You can't have an super-tiny tip with capacitive touchscreens; it has to be roughly fingertip-sized to work. If you want really small & precise you should get a Note 2 instead, since they use a Wacom digitizer.

S-Pen Replacement?

Will the Wacum Bamboo Feel work with the S3? My Note 10.1 is getting a bit old and looking to get replaced, but I want to be able to use a decent S-Pen alternative.

These are awesome, I have a few I use with my chromebook plus.. Might be thinking about picking up a tab s3 as well. ?

I'm currently using the Staedtler Noris Digital Pen and it's a pretty good replacement for the too-small S-Pen that was shipped with the S3.

I really have to make a comment here. I was looking for replacement tips when I first bought my tablet so I could work out how roughly I could use my stylus. I bought these tips from eBay and found they are far better than the originals. Both in endurance and use. I bought these as Samsung had none available at the time.

I just bought the Wacom Bamboo stylus Feel and it does work with the S3, but it is slightly off by a millimeter or so (even after changing several replacement nibs). It seems to work best with the stylus in a near vertical position, but it is really hard to write that way . Oh, the Wacom also cannot activate the soft buttons outside the screen the way the original stylus can.
It's not too bad for writing in general, but I won't recommend it for precision drawing. I seem to get the best results with Onenote rather than other writing apps.
The original S3 stylus is still the most accurate. Maybe I got a stylus that is slightly defective or the new S3 digitizer reacts differently to old versions of the stylus (different levels of sensitivity and all that).

I had the same issue with my original nib. My new one is out by same amount and have been wondering if there was a way to realign it.

After doing more research, I applied the fixes recommended in this thread:

I had to do both the stylus calibration (pop off the button cover and turn the knobs for calibration and sensitivity) as well as the shaving off the tip of the pen trick. The calibration gets the stylus to point to the same spot on the screen (but at 90 degree angle, use the *#0*# hardware tests for S-Pen to be more accurate). The sensitivity fix helps the stylus activate the off-screen soft buttons (Yay!). Finally the shaving off the tip minimizes the off-set when using the stylus at an angle. I finally got the stylus to be near perfect (it's still like 0.5 mm off, but that's good enough for me).

That s pen is a proper pen size. Noris is also for tab S3 and galaxy book. Thats more of a pencil standard. Idiota

The Staedler Norris Digital works fine. No erase button though.
