Anyone have scuffing around the headphone jack? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have two kind of hard to see scuffs next to my headphone jack, I'm wondering if that's from missing and hitting the phone instead of getting it in the jack itself. I realize this is a perverted question lol, but please, check out those headphone jacks, move it around in the light, they can be tough to spot!

I had a circular one, probably the metal audio cable.
Beamed from my Grouper.

Yes, I have one.

No scuffs around the headphone jack, but I have one close to the charging port.

The plastic around the jack has a chip in it on mine.

Had this since Feb 1st though, without a case about 95% of the time.

I don't any scuffing. But from my observations, it looks like the paint job around this area isn't the greatest. I can see the potential for a bit of missing paint of a chip.
I'll take a picture and update this post later on.

Dishin out thanks like it's my birthday, thanks for the replies.
I'm rather disappointed, the point of my overpriced case was to keep this thing safe, between that and the easy-to-scratch screen, I think I'm going naked (not me personally...ugh trolls always say something about that).

I have what seems like a scuff on the edge of the port.

I have a chip in the exact same place. My headphone jack also broke a few months ago. (the part that holds the input in wore out) I just replaced it though. Works great now!

I figured out where mine came from- you know how OEMs like to make their phones look badass, so often you see the headphone plug itself sticks out on one side as part of the curve of the phone.
My scuffing is from my Beats right angle plug grinding against the part of the phone that sticks out the most (upper left side if looking at the headphone jack straight on) as part of my "turn the wire out of the way so it doesn't bend against the plug and my pocket" campaign.
Sooo...BEATS RIGHT ANGLE HEADPHONE WIRES DAMAGE GALNEXES. There it is.

Even the headset that comes with the GalNex scuffs off the paint in that corner.

I had something like that as well, I think it was just from missing the hole....Lol. So much for turning 22 today and being mature.

LOL. I have a chip in the same spot, same size it appears too. Happened from my headphones (duh), the little metal part that sticks out from the plug is what caused it from rotating the headphones, sucks, but it's a common issue, happened on my Nexus S too, and will probably happen on the LG Nexus from the shape of the headphone port so I'll be putting a very thin piece of clear tape or something on the headphone jack of the next Nexus or my headphones to prevent it. OP you may as well accept it as a feature or something, gives it character lol.

It's interesting to hear that this problem dates back to the Nexus S... Nexus One too? HTC so probably not, headphones are 100% in with those phones lol.

Always had a hard time getting it in the hole. But no scuffs for me. I actually have more scuffs around my phone from putting it on and taking it off a lot because I have two pogo pin docks and don't want to wear out my USB port. I transfer files wireless a lot too.

Actually it did happen on my Nexus One as well from what I remember because the metal piece of the headphones sat right on top of the Nexus One's aluminum body so turning the headphones would scuff it up and eventually leave little indents. Unless the phone has a little headphone guard kinda thing around the jack (only example I can think of right now would be the SGS3's headphone jack, it has a little black outlined plastic circle) chances are your headphones will scuff the paint/body
Off topic: Why do people think HTC products = high quality, just because they use aluminum? They may feel nice, but most HTC phones I used in my experience were the worst with dust getting inside the screen and such (the Sensation was a nightmare) and their phones have just as much issues as other OEMs. Haven't actually used an HTC phone in awhile so I don't know if they've improved or not, but I always felt it was a hit or miss with their phones.
Sorry for the rant :/

I always try to keep the usb port unused, besides, my self made ugly pogo dock is way cooler

I plan on ordering a replacement USB board and waiting for the port to break lol.
I was incredibly disappointed with the Thunderbolt, I was hyped up about it all the way back in 2010 when rumors of a Droid Incredible HD started circulating with the Droid Terminator. I thought it was perfect. I thought it was perfect when I got it. Now, over a year later, I'm safely done with HTC. Updates are sporatic, the kickstand peeled its outer coating easily, hell I opened up the battery cover to find a bunch of sand! How in the world did that happen?!
The 8MP camera was worse than my GalNex's 5MP shooter, it was fat because of the LTE, the Radio setup for simultaneous voice and data over 3G made it impossible for devs to update Android themselves, it had 768mb of RAM. 768. What. The. ****. Too cheap to go 1024, that's what that says to me.

I went to the TMO store with the intent of buying one and changed my mind once I saw the size. They add a lot of thickness and they have a lump on the side where the USB connector hooks up to the phone.

could you go back and get a picture of it next to stock phone, so we can see the size comparison?
I'm really amazed at how reluctant manufacturers (HTC?) are to utilize the damn charging contacts on the side of the phone! Seriously, what moron thought it would be a better idea to have a skin with a huge lump on the side to house a USB plug instead of simply wiring three small contacts into side of the skin? Come on! Pull your head out of your a$$es HTC!

This is pretty much the correct answer.
I don't understand it either. The pins were one of the reasons I decided to keep this phone over the Nexus S. I assumed we would get all kinds of cool accessories that made use of them. Alas, nothing.
Depressing, indeed.
I was excited about this accessory, until I saw that giant lump on the side. It's pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.
The Nexus One had the pins as well, during the life of the phone the only two items to use them were the HTC desk dock and car dock. Manufacturers seem to forget about them.
Whats so great about the pins anyway?
Saw it and I'll pass on this too...wth were they thinking on this one!

I love my nexus dock granted it didn't come issue free (won't dock right if not seated properly) but it automatically goes to clock mode and I had it hooked up to my stereo where I streamed/listed to my music docked/undocked.

Pins are great, you don't have to plug in your phone to charge your phone. All you do is just set it to the dock. Now for pins on a car dock, it automatically goes to carmode. I just hope if tmobile makes a cardock they learned from the mistakes of the nexus ver and add a 3.5mm jack in the back.

The pins are larger, and can allow for greater amperage depending on the internal circuitry. The Nexus One car dock would charge my phone *incredibly* fast; it was awesome. It was the one charger that could keep up with (and easily surpass) the discharge rate of the battery when using Google Navigation.

Ive wondered about this myself. I have one (got it for christmas), and while my battery life has increased, it seems to be getting worse and worse, especially if I ever go without the skin (ie, to charge the skin and still be able to use the phone). I swear, I was in the car on the way to college and had half the battery drain in oon hour powerskin was depleted. Mind you, that skin lasted a good 7+ hours, but then my phone nearly died before i got to school to charge it.
this thing is quite epic fail. i dont even mind the bulge its the fact that it keeps charging the battery at all times which scares the crap outta me. price is cheap at 40 but still not worth it. returning it tomorrow.
My Review
I have had this power skin for a week and I overall Like it. One thing this doesn't help is from not shattering the screen.. Because I shattered mine day 2 I had this powerskin, but I overall enjoy it and I don't even worry about the battery anymore.
A trick and something I noticed to make it not to always charge your device is if you charge just the powerskin by itself and unplug it then put your phone in it. It will not charge your phone until you turn it on by pressing the button on the back.
If you need more battery juice and longer battery life I suggest you get you will notice a difference.
I dont even know which tmobile stores are selling powerskins for this phone
just call and ask. alot of stores have them cause of the cancer lump on the side of the phone lols.

How to make your earphones last longer

Over the past few years I've went through a few pairs of earphones.
One pair I lost the others broke.
They never lasted me more than 6 months before problems started to come forth.
Making them last longer means taking care of your earphones. They are fragile.
1stly check this link of how to take care of them.
Now I've found that every time my earphones break they usually break right at the jack because the cable bends alot there.
So one of my friends showed me this nifty trick to ease the bend of the cable
Just get a cheap click pen and remove the spring preferable one that looks like this
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
then take the cable of your earphones and insert it like this
wind the spring around the cable bit by bit
and slide it to were the cable joins the jack and let the end of the spring stretch over the rubber so it is secured on
Sofar my earphones have not yet given me any problems with this method.
Always be consiouse of your cabel at your jack make sure it never bends sharply.
Try not to put your device in your pocket when listening to music as your device moves around and bends the cable on the jack.
As I said that is were my earphones usually broke.
I Hope this helps you guys alot and may you have sweet sound to your ears werever you may roam.
I feel like it would annoy me tho, and I always just end up losing them instead of breaking them haha

As I said, daily during my workout as well as well as always when working in the yard as they block external sound very well and keep the work from getting boring. Again, I have the feeling that a major part of the issue is having a straight in jack instead of an angled connector. The point of your mod is to keep stress off of the connection points within the housing, which an angled jack will experience a lot less of.

or buy earphones with a removable cable. I baby all my stuff, and the weak strain reliefs on my Klipsch S4i's split after a year of every day use, so I repaired them (and gave them to my son). My Shure's have a removable cable, so never going to be an issue there.
This is a good tip, though, may save some people's earphones. Most important part is to limit stress on all joints of the cable by minimizing bending them there.

Here in South Africa we don't have a big variety of decent earphones. Skullcandy is like the best we can get here as far as I know and I use in ear earphones but I want some Aviators wich also has the replaceable cable. good tip! Thanks!
Theres another 'extendor' you can add to make earphones last longer
I've purchased one of these 'extendors' have a coiled cable
the one i bought from ebay was under the title '4pole 3.5mm 3ring M-F Right angle iPhone extension cable coiled line 0.3-1.6ft '
Here's an image http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODAwWDgwMA==/z/hL8AAOxygj5ScyAv/$(KGrHqF,!lkFJvT2IRdEBScy!ug!1g~~60_57.JPG
These ones have 4 poles that allow for play/pause buttons on earphones and their right angled so they fit many phones better.
The coils help minimize impact to the earphones by minimizing tension forces on the earphones and placing them on the coiled part.

Car Mount

Anyone got a good car mount go the OGP? Thinkg of going with the iBolt but worried about it hitting the on./off and vol buttons
Our landscape home screen will flip either way. If that helps any.
I'm using a smart gear car mount ($15 at Micro Center) that has been working very well. I have a case on my phone that protects the buttons a bit so I haven't had any issues with it. I haven't tried it without the case on but I think it would be ok without, just probably would squeeze it quite as tight on the phone as I do with the case on.

I have that. It's pretty ridiculous. Every few weeks I pull it off the mount (which is easy) and wash it under warm or hot water. Sticky as new again.
Do not use that with a naked phone, It will pull the back cover off LOL!
If you have a slot-loading cd slot on your car stereo, you can use this.

I've been using it for about two years, bought it for my original Galaxy Note and fits the LG OGP as well. It won't damage the slot and it doesn't jerk around or bounce with the car's movements.

I just got the vent mount version of that holder and it works surprisingly well with the OG Pro. I thought it would be loose, but it did a great job on a road trip.
As far as Off Roading, I drive a Subaru Baja.... So I have no idea LMAO!
I got the iBolt xProDock (the generic one) and the thing is great, not interfering with the buttons at all, and it's rock solid. I do use it with a TPU case, rather than bare, mind you.

I also got one of those universal clip-style mounts (not the dock style ones). It's actually pretty good too, though there's no real way to fix a charging cable to it without it looking strange. Also, with my windshield's angle, I had to adjust the thing to the stops at both ends for the OGP to be angled properly. It would probably work better on a more vertical windshield.

I still have my RAM mount when I had a Nexus 7. This thing was solid and they also make universal mounts for phones. You have to purchase the base to connect to your car though. I had one that mounts to the base of the passenger side seat. This was set up for a tablet though. Nexus 7's make awesome GPS There's lots of different choices you can mix and match parts to make a custom mount as long as they're compatible with each other.

Low gauge sheet metal, check!

Industrial grade velcro, check!
I cut a 2" wide by 5" long piece of sheet metal and I bent it 90 degrees, took three screws and screwed the angle sleeve into the dash.
Applied 1 side of the velcro to the angle sleeve, over the top, so the the velcro doesn't want to peel off the sleeve.
Applied the other side of the velcro to the back of the phone and it's done.

My SW2 arrived today. It works perfectly and I love it but it is lifting the same as yours. My was a gift from Clove in UK (I'm in Australia) and I can't be bothered sending it back. I'm going to put a couple of drops of Superglue on it to hold it down.

No but is dead simple is a 1 single piece of hardware embedded in the metal frame with (weak) glue.
You just need to press from the bottom (where there written CE 0682 .. Sony and and so on) with your thumbs, first from the side of the power button and then from the other side.
That's it, add a bit of new glue.
Total time to do that 2 minutes (the time I had to wait my uber cab )
Same problem here and same idea: pick some glue and now it's perfect.

Here you go
Glue, well, as far as I can tell this is just a black version of the silicone you have in your bathroom. It's like rubber when scraped/peeled off.
The question is: Is there a reason for this choice? Did they use this to be able to service it later?
If you use Super Glue, you'll never be able to take it apart again. Regular contact glue? The glue used to repair a flat bicycle tyre (Cement something) or just silicone like they did?
When poking ever so gently with a tiny flathead screwdriver along the underside of the screen, I can tell they have a similar silicone seal between the screen and the body. In time, this could probably be cut a bit and pried open with a small box cutter or some other method to remove the screen to replace the battery. It's of course much too new of a product for iFixit to have a repair guide yet, much less anyone selling spare parts. I'll look for a disassembly article/video at regular intervals. Until then and to be on the safe side, I'm staying away from Super Glue or the Epoxy I've got lying around and going to try something less permanent. Worst case scenario: it won't hold it together, and I'll just have to redo it with something stronger, but that's not too much of an inconvenience to me.
EDIT: Having scraped off some of the excess glue, I then re-assembled it using a thin layer of contact glue on both the watch and the case sides and waited 2 minutes. Assembled I can still smell the solvent, which is great, since that means its evaporating, instead of remaining wet like inside the glue tube. Heat resistant to 60 degrees celsius, which hopefully means that, if necessary, it can be heated a bit with a blow dryer and pushed apart.
same here, 2 days and starting to come away, dont really want to glue myself incase anything else goes wrong with it, would probably invalidate the warranty.

same for me, contacted Sony and the clock is gone for repair.
is the build quality of this watch really that bad? i read it supposed to even be water proof? but being as it looks now the front coming off only after a few days scares me to even get this. I Have been thinking about getting this watch and the xperia z1 as a trade for my 5S but after seeing this thread im starting to this difffrently now. Sony makes some sexy looking devices but if there quality control is really that bad I might just not get it
It's not the front coming off though, it's the whole watch part coming out of its plastic housing, it's still waterproof.
I have had the same problem. I am very disappointed with this watch.
I hoped much more of Sony.
Well the worst thing happened... The strap failed and watch fell...

What do you mean? The watch was still in the frame and then the strap fell off? If so, metal, silicone or leather? Also, did the pin come out?
How far did it drop and onto what surface?
The strap came of from it pins and it dropped from chest height. I took it out the holder to see how bad it was

You have the silicone strap, I just rechecked your first post. I've had both, because my first metal watch never worked (until manually flashing firmware using some Sony update software) and I didn't want to wait forever for returns, so just ordered the silicone one (only type in stock atm) and changed the straps. Later found out how to fix first one, so am now using that one and sent back silicone one. Sorry, unimportant detail, I know.
My point being that I've removed both types of straps at least twice and the silicone one is so easy to remove, whereas the metal one takes some serious concentration, force and skill to remove, at least without scrathing it. Even with tools it took me several minutes to dislodge the pins on the metal strap, so for anyone out there with a steel strap, there's no need to worry. If you've got the silicone one, well, that might be a totally different story. I think the grippy nature of the silicone might, if pulled at an angle and away from the pin end toward the center, might somehow grab hold of the pin resulting in the strap coming off like it did in this case.

Since your watch is pretty much done, would you be interested in disassembling the whole unit so we can learn more about it? Like how to replace the battery to facilitate wireless charging?
minor operation
this is my watch with minor disassemble condition - purpose was to de-solder the battery connector to reset my watch but still, no matter how many times on / off or reset as per described in the manual, the watch doesnt reset. just showing the clock.
software updated more than 10 times. nuthing so far.
exhausted and now just waiting for some solutions from any angels out there.
if not, just gona get myself a new one.
grrrrr.......

Beginning the journey of Wireless Charging

So I'm really missing wireless charging after having stuffed it into my GS3 and the Nexus 4 obviously having it built in. So... being that I still had 2 chargers and 2 pads left over, I've decided to begin modding the Moto X after seeing there was quite a bit of room in the bottom of the phone under the battery cover when I was replacing the woven black with a MotoMaker back. Here's the pre-fitting photos. I had to trim some of the foam away at the bottom, and still need to trace where exactly to place the wires for the charging. I'm guessing I'll have to solder directly to the back of the USB port. Where it sits will be a perfect angle, and should not interfere with NFC at all (Yay google wallet!)

I'll be posting periodically with updates, although I don't know when I'll have more time as I have 2 infant daughters that demand much attention.
Awesome!
I've been missing qi charging as well, hopefully you get this to work.

Curious to see how this goes. Even though I am quite sure the results will be positive.
Sub'd
I hope you don't abandon the idea and keep us updated. Seems like a worthy project!
Go OP! I can't wait to see success with this, so that I may be able to do this mod myself as well.
Exactly what I was hoping someone would do. Hopefully this works out and is simple enough to do. :good:
Looks awesome, OP!
On a side note - where did you get the MotoMaker back? I'd like to change my back to a custom-colored one eventually too, but I haven't been able to find any backs online.

You can get them on ebay now. Been eyeing getting one but waiting for the wood backs.
Well this is awesome man...!!!!! :good:
Wow, god speed. I don't yet have a Moto X (still holding out for a wood back) but I'm so used to using those Palm wireless chargers on my current phone (SGS)! I have one at work and one at home on my nightstand. It's a perfect angle of inclination for my preference and the wireless charging works great. Are you having any problems putting the phone back together? I know they don't leave much room in there for something as thick as one of these chargers. And I guess if I eventually get the wood back that probably wouldn't make for an easy time getting it off :-/
I'd like to do this too, which coil receiver do you recommend?
Thanks,
Danny

The one he is using in the images uses the Palm Touchstone charger, you can find a bunch of applicable coils on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/palm-wireless-charging I am fairly certain that this coil will only work on that Touchstone and is not compatible with QI or Powermat.
edit: I also highly recommend buying some tiny magnets (I bought 1/4" by 1/32" circular ones) instead of the metal disks that are included so you can get it to snap a lot better to the stand.
thanks
Anyone trying this should aim to have the charging coil as close to the camera as possible, the antennas are all in the lower back of the unit and you won't want to block them at all.
I have been looking at some wireless charging options myself. One of them is a small pad that should fit under most soft cases, it has a thin ribbon cable with a very low profile micro usb connector on the end. The better option is something like that but integrated internally. I haven't opened a Moto X yet to see how much space there is. What is the maximum thickness we can hope to have, is there anywhere near 1mm if we remove the silicone pad?
Everything I am looking at is Qi compatible.
I have also been studying high-res pictures of the inside of the Moto X looking for possible solder points for power, doesn't look too friendly at this point.

There is plenty of room towards the bottom and the silicone is maybe a mm in the thickest area. Insofar as blocking the antenna, I've never had issues with my sgs3 or note 2 with putting the coil over the antenna. However, with regards to solder points, you are right. This is not going to be easy without fully disassembling and finding either the microUSB solder points or the charging circuits entry points from the microUSB. I may be abandoning this if that's the case.

Has anyone tried this (for the qi standard)? Thinking about giving it a shot.

That looks like it would be perfect to slip between the phone and a case, would bending it to conform to the back of the phone affect it's charging ability though? Or would it even be able to be bent?

So how would one check to see which of the 4 prongs connected to the ribbon going to the battery are the correct +/- terminals. I've been studying over the iFixIt.com images to come up with a plan and I think if I can get a random wireless charging coil from eBay then cut that ribbon to fit into the 2 needed ports for the battery ribbon, then the only thing would be size/fitment under the back cover.

It shouldn't matter. As long as the plug is in, and the pad is near the wireless charger.
This is kinda smart; can't believe this isn't widely known. I've never seen something like this.

Someone has to be the guinea pig on this.. I would love to be able to slide this under a case.
