Promising reply from HTC? - HTC One X

Well i sent an email to them wondering if they would give me any info on 4.3. And this is the reply i got back. Is certainly not the negative one i was expecting, but doesn't quite confirm it either. Here it is:
Dear Daniel,
I am afraid HTC is not planning to release 4.3 update for HTC ONE X yet, 4.3 update is just for HTC ONE and HTC ONE MAX at the time being. However, we testing the new update for HTC ONE X, if phone will keep the excellent performance with 4.3 version HTC will release it to all HTC ONE X users.
Let me know if I have successfully answered your question, please click here to complete this.

Why you would 4.3? 4.4 is already out

Yes of course that is true But i would have 4.3 over 4.2 any day of the week 4.4 would be a nice bonus, as it does seem that Google have made it more lightweight, while adding to it at the same time

And 4.3 doesn't even differ that much from 4.2.2. A lot of the features HTC One's users got in the Sense 5.5 update, we already have in Sense 5.
It won't surprise me if 4.2.2 is the last update we'll have from HTC, but it'd still be awesome if one day we'll have an official Android 4.4 release
The only problem is that that release will have Sense as well and I prefer AOSP to Sense actually. I think the visual changes Google has made in Android 4.4 won't really be seen in Android 4.4 with Sense on top of it and we'll only have the performance improvements.

I hav heard that 4.3 fixes a few bugs with the Tegra 3 CPU (I personally have found no bugs) Has a few neat things like customizing quick settings, performance improvements, battery ect. An improvement is an improvement.

Pretty sure customizing quick settings is a custom ROM feature, not AOSP.

not the 4.3 update...it's the kernel wich fixes that...and with 4.3 we will get more performance...games would run better...overall speed would be even more and battery life would be also better...but we will see...hope we will also get 4.4...because 4.4 would run even more better then 4.3 because better optimizing for "older" phones

Quick settings customising is an official 4.3 feature which i believe is on the One's and Max's update too

[Q] OTA Update by carrier or phone manufacturer?

Can't find any answers on forums so here goes...will a future 2.3 OTA update for DHD be by carrier or phone manufacturer i.e by HTC direct.
I got mine p&g on 3 network but don't use the 3 sim, I use an o2...so how wld any OTA update arrive, do I need to keep putting 3 sim back in the phone from time to time or when I check for updates will it come from HTC direct?...I take it that it wldn't come from o2...
Thanks
**Emailed HTC..they say they wont be releasing any OTA update, it will come from carrier, and for me to contact 3
***Just spoke to 3...didnt expect much from them, according to their c/s call centre assistant in Mumbai, the latest version of Android 3 network has is 2.1...dimwit, I bought the phone from 3 and had 2.2 already on it, which he disputes..obviously he knows better than me who bought the phone and uses it
Have a look at the software build. If it's x.x.405.x then any updates will come from HTC directly. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the carrier to modify it first.

We are all new to it at some point but the whole process is actually a lot easier than it first sounds. Just read the instructions and FAQs until it's clear what you need to do. See my reply in the thread linked below to save you searching and to save me typing it all again!:

As for things not working in custom ROMs, well that was maybe the case when the DHD was first released but it's certainly not the case now. Lets take Android Revolution HD ROM as an example - Everything works as it should and the performance of it blows all stock ROMs away.
There are other 100% working / stable / every day use ROMs too, like LeeDroid ROM which also gets great feedback from the people who use it.

Many thanks...maybe I will have a try...getting bored with Froyo cos of all the 2.3 hype so wld like to see what the fuss is about...cant read anything on android forums without them banging on about gingerbread this, gingerbread that...and an OTA from 3 or HTC isnt worth holding breath for
Ah... now most fully working DHD ROMs are also Froyo, but don't let that put you off as they will all be like night and day compared to stock Froyo. You jsut have to have a quick look at the release notes and change logs to see the differences.
However if you really do want a slice of tasty Gingerbread look at the CM7 builds, but this is where you will find things not working or unstable etc as they're experimental.
Another option to relieve your Froyo boredom is to flash one of the custom Froyo ROMs and then start customising it with mods and themes etc. See post 2 in the Android Revolution HD thread for some really cool stuff, and also in the first few posts of the LeeDroid thread.

We'll have to wait for HTC to release the official update, or wait for another model HTC to get 2.3 and then be ported over to DHD.
It will happen, we just have to be patient... something I learned waiting for the 2.1 update for Hero!
In think custom 2.2 would be better than stock 2.3 anyway. On the other hand, custom ROMs based on 2.3 are something to get excited about

HTC! there's potentially a lot of work with the framework and API changes from Froyo to gingerbread and I wouldn't expect personally to see a GB sense ROM until HTC have ported it

UPDATE
I've just noticed that this thread has been moved from the development section. For those who aren't aware of the significance of this update, it is useful to us Desire owners because it will allow us to use stock, AOSP based Gingerbread ROMs with improved stability, graphics performance and battery life. It will also also give ROM makers more straightforward access to camera hardware.
goodbye bootloops!!
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) update now rolling out to Nexus S and Nexus One. Be patient, may take a few weeks for OTA to complete.
this is news.
a good news. I can't wait to try it .
Great news, here we,HTC DesirE users can not wait to download via OTA now...
That's some great news, but since I read that HTC (pocketnow.com/android/gingerbread-coming-to-htc-desire-this-spring-or-summer) is waiting for the Desire S to come out first, we Desire users might have to wait quite a while before getting an official update!?

Yes, that's true... if you have some sort of love affair with HTC Sense!
I've the new Sense (Froyo build) from RCMixHD on my Desire and have to say... it's okay but man is there a lot of HTC crap running on it!
Since most of us are running Cyanogenmod, Oxygen, etc... it's great news for us! We'll have a nice clean ROM in a matter of weeks (if not days). So I don't see how HTC dragging their feet matters at all. And just so you know, another reason they (HTC) might be slow to upgrade is because the new Desire S and Wildfire S models are coming, and they've changed so little on them that I'm sure they want to give users more (artificial) reasons to update. Thank god for our Rom Chefs!
I'm waiting for Sense personally, stock Android is fugly - even with different launchers. Only one remotely good is the MIUI launcher

Stock Android is ugly? Look at my Signature
In my opinion Sense is more beautiful than stock Android, but at least Gingerbread has a black bar instead of the hideous grey bar in 2.2 and also the icons are a bit nicer. Combine 2.3 with LauncherProPlus and a few other tweaks and it looks good. Altough what I really don't understand is why the stock dialer sucks so much. Unable to call a contact by pressing the first few letters of a name... Phones did that already at the turn of the millennium, maybe even before that. (Yes, I have DialerOne)
Really good news for all of us indeed!! Sense and clean Android followers will have our update, and all (our at least most of it) the issues will be fixed!!
Cheers for that!!

Subjective - personally the fat, dark (but not quite black) borders in Sense apps were something I was glad to see the back of.
In fact the aesthetics of Sense were a major motivation in ditching it (I stopped using the Sense launcher within a couple of days, well before rooting).
It's all a matter of taste - but at least we do have options

[Q] Most stable ICS/JB Rom

I recently had to move back to my desire after my newer ICS orange san diego developed an overheating problem.
It currently has CyanogenMod7 on it but I would like to put a similarly stable and performant ICS or JB ROM on it.
It seems there are a number of ROMs still under pretty active development and I'm having a hard time in choosing between them.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a stable ROM with reasonable performance that I could stick on the desire?
I do use the video camera from time to time so would preferably like a ROM where this was working to reasonable standard.
My phone is S-OFF, rooted, unlocked, 2GB sd-ext, CM7r2 HBOOT (will likely be swapping this back for stock HBOOT).
Thanks in advance for any replies!
These threads arent really allowed, but ill give you some info.
Go with JB over ICS. I dont think there are any ICS roms actively developed currently, and overall JB has better performance. I havent had video recording work in any JB rom (its not that important for me anyways), but i think a few ICS roms have it working.
You wont have the same stability and performance as GB, but there are still a few good options that i have used as daily drivers:
Paranoid Android 4.3 by WoH
ChromiumROM (CM10.1) by me
Evervolv by nikez
Thanks very much for the reply and apologies for posting a 'not allowed' thread. *slaps wrist*
I have already DLed Chromium so will give that a try first. It was failing to install but then I realised that's cos of my HBOOT so going to sort that first and then get Chromium installed.

Yep, most jb roms need stock hboot to fit their large system sizes, however you can generally slim them down yourself to get them running on data++ hboot. I'll probably release a slimmed version of chromium ROM soon.

I noticed that you released build 11 last night so I flashed that and all looks to be working really great so far. Very impressed with the ROM, appears to be stable from my limited testing. Had one issue where it got stuck on the widgets screen and wouldn't show homescreen but was fine after a restart and hasn't reoccurred since.
Another mod I made was to set the pixel density to 200 which works really well on the desire, can get a lot more on the screen.
Is the issue with the video camera pretty fundamental and unlikely to get resolved?
Still amazed that JB can run so well on such an old phone.
Thanks for the rom, sterling work!

It's my orange san diego that is overheating, although my desire has previously over-heated but that was fixed under warranty. I might try taking it apart and cleaning the contacts as that guide suggests though in the hope of getting it working again.
Been running chromium for a few days now and it's been very stable. Only issue I've had is the error 'google text to speech engine has stopped' keeping on popping up. It is a bit sluggish but I expected that really and I do have a lot of apps installed.

They're both pretty similar in my opinion at the current time but I think Eclipse might be getting more customization soon, the NOS version hasn't been updated for a while and I think I saw he might be waiting till it can be updated to 4.3 so depends on how much customization you want I suppose.

I don't touch AOSP ROMs, just never liked them on a phone with such great software, Sense 5 is really nice upgrade from 4.1+ which I wasn't a huge fan of many things.
Reading the OP of a ROM though does wonders...
"All of my source for modded apps can be found at http://github.com/nitroglycerine33
Overview
Jellybean 4.2.2 Google Play Edition based
Deodexed, zipaligned, rooted.. etc..
Removed non-essential Google Apps and languages
Extended power menu
T9 inverted Dialer from Eclipse AOSP source
Quick-reply inverted Mms from Eclipse AOSP source
Added HTC IR blaster control
Sense Calendar
Sense Browser
Inverted Eclipse AOSP Email
CM File Manager
Lock Clock widgets
4.3 Photosphere camera
init.d support
More to come!! "
I have tried both, but Eclipse had several issues on my phone. I don't really like the inverted apps, but I didn't mind. The straw that broke the camel's back was when my messaging app just disappeared after a random reboot. I'm on NOS now, with no problems.
I've been using eclipse with xposed and gravity box. I've had no issues and really like it.

I tried both of them yesterday. With Eclipse and NOS I was getting horrible data connection which seems to be the norm with alot of the Roms so far since it's still fairly early with development for the VZW One. Eclipse had more problems than NOS. It was constantly switching me to WCDMA and even using the LTE Toggle app wasn't correcting the issue. This got annoying quick. Every Rom I've tried so far has been pretty bad with data, except for Andy's BoneStock Rom.
Just gotta be patient though, soon there will be stable versions popping up everywhere.
Gonna stick with Bonestock for now

Probably should have been a bit more descriptive.
Battery isn't horrible. It's just a bit worse than that of a sense rom. Same with data. Isn't horrible, just isn't as good as sense.

I'll second that. Battery life is not bad at all. But battery life on sense seems to be better. I haven't had any problems with data whatsoever.

Best standard ROM?

After breaking another Android 2.3.4 phone I rooted and downgraded my G2, hoping to put a modern version of Android on it since 2.x seemed to have so many incompatibilities. Now what?
I am really not a modder or even a phone power user. I just want a smartphone that works as expected, where someone can say something like, "You should get Google Now!" and I can get it.
As best I can tell reading these forums it sounds like some version of 4.x is the way to go, but I can't figure out which is the most stable, simple, and compatible ROM of that generation, and what else I will need to install to have a relatively modern smartphone experience.
(I also apologize that my search-fu is so weak. I tried. If you point me to the right thread I will go gratefully and quietly )
Try an andromadus jelly bean, sounds like the closet thing to what you're after. A list of ROMs and other info can be found here

Hi, just to help. As I broke my screen, I had to revert back to the Z...
I just tested some roms and for the one still available tested, the best for me is AlterNdromadus and it's far beyond the others.
Edit : and Jelly Baby just gave me a bootloop...
All ported Sense versions were too heavy for the Z from what I remember.

That's why I want Sense 2.1 - one we officially have on Froyo and GB Roms.
But am now on CM7 and it works fine I miss the lockscreen and FN/Shift notification icons, but can survive without them.
