I got a freezing problem with my note2. It's quite a strange behavior, got worse pretty fast since yesterday (tried to reflect the situation exactly below).
The freeze behaves like: system freezes, apps freeze, buttons stop working, sometimes the notification bar pull-down still works for 1-2 seconds, BUT: animated icons in the notification bar are sometimes (not always) still animating up to 2-3 minutes. Can also happen with display off, can't turn on anymore.
Since I'm using a ROM that's safe from the SDS problem, it cant be that. Still I mention that I do have that insane chip (Type: VTU00M, FwRev: 0xf1).
My guess is its a hardware related problem, maybe the internal flash memory(?).
Still, it will be hard to restore back to stock for warranty with the usb not working to use Odin.
Original Baseband: XXALJ2
History of this phone (maybe not 100% accurate, it's hard to recall everything exactly):
Bought on release
rooted some weeks later
flashed CM ~spring, regularly updated
July: stopped showing modem signal strength
July: switched to Asylum CM10.x, updated on new version releases
September: USB stopped working correctly when connecting to computer (charging but no data, different cables, ports, computers)
October: started freezing randomly, approx every second day, getting slighly more often
Since Yesterday:
-did a full wipe/factory reset, reflashed rom. more and faster freezes
-as i was messing around, decided to do a modem update: from XXALJ2 to XXDMF1: radio signal strength working again. Freezing increased.
-reverted to backup, also restored old modem: Crazy fast freezings, withing 30sek after every boot.
-again some full wipes/clean install with different but still recent asylum roms: freezings a little better than with a backup, but still crazy fast.
-full wipe with format internal storage: freezes got better, occur after minutes instead of seconds. They still occur faster when using a backup instead of a new install. Same with CM 10.1.3.
No custom kernels used. Default governors. No TB restores or something that I could think of messing with stuff.
Any help or ideas are very appreciated
I could manage to restore stock via Odin (1 in 100 times it detects the usb connection on my laptop), with 4.1.1 Had a freeze, made the OTR update to 4.1.2. Had another freeze. After that 2 more updates. It also changed the Baseband every time, its now DMF1 (same as i upgraded). No freezes anymore. I mean, what the heck? This makes no sense for me at all. If someone can lighten me up, please, go ahead.
It all sounds like SDS. Don't forget that SDS happens if there is a memory block corrupted. If you were in an insane rom before (and you said you bought it in release so almost sure you did) the memory blocks got corrupted. that happened "a lot" of people in the SDS thread(between commas taking in account that here in xda there is not the whole group of people who bought it and percentatge is low).
I recommend you to use emmc brickbug check app and check the memory blocks(if you are rooted)
then if it is SDS the only thing that we can do is pray or wait to samsung not to give free repairs only to China.
hoping that you'll pass the blocks test and it was only a normal problem..

Thanks for your reply.
SDS was the first thing I thought could be the issue. But it run for months without a single freeze on a SDS-safe rom before it started.
The last thing I have done before reverting to stock was a memory check with emmc brickbug app, and it passed. I forgot to mention it, even it's very interesting: while the memory check was running I had the longest runtime without a freeze.
I'm thinking now of returning the phone for warranty because of the USB problem. It's probably too risky to get back to stock once again. If I even could manage to root it again. But tell them too I had freezes? hmm, it's really not happening now anymore
I have the same problem... no idea what should I do
well... Yesterday I took a try and swtiched the CWM. I had TWRP and I've switch to Phliz Touch, so far... 16 hours without freeze

hmm, I also switched back to CWM recovery (from TWRP) for the last boot (to restore the nandroid stock backup I did, but could manage to flash with Odin before I had to do it that way), that was the point where I was surprised that the emmc memory check did go through without a freeze. I didn't saw any relation to the problem here, but who knows?
So far 34 hours without a freeze

Same problem, been suffering with freezes for the last 3 weeks and the last 2 days have been 400% worse, found out about this emmc bug but cannot find any information as to how to fix it, some mention kernals, vodafone will not replace the phone unless their software update does not fix it, Running 3.99 RC2 Paranoid android. Anybody got any ideas?
Seems my phone is one of the effect chips with the emmc issue. Funny thing is i just flashed back to stock in order to take my phone back to the shop and its working fine.... not a single issue all day.
Is there something custom roms are doing that party causes this issue?

I was having different issues including freezes and WiFi/BT loss when kernels with undervolt installed. Usually from custom ROMs. The effect is prolonged sometimes till hardware reset done.
The only working solution (for me) is to use a kernel with controlled voltages and set all the voltages about 1000mV for frequencies below 800MHz. 100% stable,

Hey,
I know theres a lot of threads about htc/android phones freezing and crashing/rebooting but none of them really described my exact situation. And since it's getting worse and worse and driving me crazy, I wanted to ask for help.
As the title suggests my HTC Desire keeps freezing and crashing (sometimes rebooting, too).
It all probably started shortly before I first rooted my device, following the great sticky noob-tutorial. First problem was, that sometimes my phone wouldn't wake up from standby, especially after I a missed call (rooting didn't solve that problem).
Some time later, now rooted and with a custom ROM, I noticed, that sometimes when I wanted to use my phone, it showed the PIN-screen, which obviously means, that it rebooted quietly (don't remember if this also happened before rooting).
A few days ago it started to completely freeze, when connected to the charger. Orange LED showed it was charging but no reaction to pressing any buttons or disconnect the charger.
Since yesterday it also crashes randomly in standby mode (can't wake it up) or e.g. when watching a video (just freezes the device, no reaction to button-pressing, screen stays on etc.)
now I am running the stability test with the charger connected - no problem for 1h10min til now...
The ROM I am running is the latest cool sense (problems also existed before the latest update)
No modification of CPU (I used to use SetCPU but since I thought that would cause the problems I uninstalled it -> no improvement)
What could be the problem here? (And how can I solve it, of course?)
Anything else than a full wipe, which could help? (that would be my last option...)
Thanks for helping...
it just happened again -.-
I was just backing up some apps with titanium backup and in the middle of scrolling through the list - freeze!
dunno what to do...
is this hardware or software related?...
Hello.
It would be pretty easy if it is a soft problem. This kind of problems are usually dealt with by installing another ROM and see if the problems persist. So if you want to try and eliminate the last option, go and install another ROM, it can be a Stock ROOT-ed ROM, Sense or anything.
The fact that you mentioned your phone was crashing even before rooting got me thinking it is a motherboard fault. I've read some threads in which people had the same problems, and in the end they all got to the same conclusion: motherboard fault. The only resolve with this is to get it to guarantee.
So first of all try installing another ROM and if the problems persist, you will need to install a RUU and see if this one eliminates your problem. If not then I don't know if there is anything else you could do, besides getting it to the guarantee.
I wait for your progress.
Hi,
thanks for your reply.
The funny thing is, that I didnt have those problems with this ROM in the beginning. Everything was fine, that's why I was using it the whole time. But as I said before, it became worse by and by... thats why I thought it could be an app or so...
that would be a recent list of apps: appbrain.com/user/marioiram/
Cannot even sync my newest list, because after freezing while watching a video, it froze again shortly after reboot... still getting worse
Try reinstalling the ROM or installing another ROM.
hm.. just when I was thinking about following your advice, my desire stopped freezing xD
no crash, no freeze oder reboot since my last post.
I even tried to force it by watching videos, playing games, connect to the charger etc.
everything is fine... strange.
Will see for how long
Well this is good news. Just keep in mind what you can do if the rebooting comes back. Hope it doesn't
Well, it did xD
Now even shortly after reboot. I'll try ROM changes as soon as I get home but there's something I noticed: it often freezes when it's supposed to display a whatsapp notification and sometimes it seems there's a problem with the sdcard (just bought a new one because my old one went nuts). Sometimes the notification 'sdcard was removed unexpectedly' (translated from German) is appearing, but after waiting a few minutes everything is fine again...
Well I'll try some stuff when there's time...

Guys I've been having random reboot issues lately and i can't figured out what is actually happening. Sometimes it just reboots itself, randomly every time.
I thought flash another rom or kernel would solve the issue but it doesn't seems to work, any ideas?
I'm currently on DFR3.0.5 rom and DF kernel.
Are you overclocking and/or undervolting?
not really, i only overclock when i play certain games, otherwise i'll set it back to normal.
Is this question sounds stupid? It seems that nobody else would bother to reply it?
i have it some times like every 6weeks believe it or not its currently on stock, but that's made no difference had it happen on custom Rom's also and its allways at about 5 am just sitting there rebooting over and over. not sure if that's what you are getting?
it just sometimes rebooting itself, so i have no idea how and why
Try reflashing back to stock and don't change ANYTHING. Install your programs or whatever, but don't root it or any major system changes.
Use it for a while and see if it reboots. If it doesn't, you did something to it, overclocking/volting, and you need to figure it out.
If it keeps doing it, I hope it's under warrenty. But it also could be the battery.
Hardware isse
I have had 2 XP's and both returned as they randomly rebooted. When I called Dial-a-Phone(UK) to enquire they put me through to their support department. I had to do a factory reset, then install an update from Sony's website and try it out. Still did not work so they said it is a hardware issue. Fortunately I returned mine withing 28 days so got an instant replacement. Pity the second one did the same. I have returned that too and am awaiting my 3rd phone(what can I say, I love the phone). If this one does the same thing I will be moving though cannot be without a reliable phone at the moment(expecting baby) I hope you are covered by the warranty. Good luck.
Annoying as f*** I know mine are fairly rare they were more often when I was all stock two things that reduce it are an apkiller and everyday reboot

If you have tried to repair the phone software via PC Companion and not installed any third party app's and it still reboots it needs to be checked at a repair center.
Contact your local support team for info about repair centers.

I have had the same problem, but my phone is only rebooting during games(especially HD games). Almost everytime I play Shadow Guardian HD, Backstab HD, or NBA Jam. I never have problems with FPSE and psx games. I am using DOOMkernel v. 11 and I OverClock to 1.14 or 1.21 max and 249 min when I am ready to start up my games. I am also using supercharger V.6 on 512 hp. Should I be overclocking at a higher voltage to stop reboots?
I started getting random reboots under .62. And hooking it up to logcat I was getting ANR errors from a ton of background 3rd party apps.
I think my issue was related to moving from Link2SD to App2SD. I forced all my apps to .android_secure and I think there was one app that didn't play nice. Anyhoo, restored back to .42 and my sd-ext and it works like it did.
3rd one going nuts!!!
An update to my previous posts. Received my third one late last week and have been really using it to make sure it does not randomly reboot. No problem there I am happy to say. The problem I had a day or so ago, is that when I was typing a text message fast, my screen went bonkers and started typing by itself. It then opened my phone app and selected a contact to call, it then opened and closed some apps and closed them. I pressed the home screen but nothing, so powered down and booted it up again. It just carried on going crazy so powered down again and took the battery out, the sim card and also the SD card too. This seems to have "fixed" it for now as I have not been able to replicate the problem. Anyone else had this issue?
FYI - I have been playing Asphalt 6 HD with absolutely no problems at all, as well as a couple of other games.
I think i just had a reboot yesterday night by itself...the reason i know it is the application will kinda er....reset it's position in drawers, some apps shortcuts disappears from my home and so on.....
just when i thought my problem has solved.........
I think it was batter

To determine if your phone rebooted overnight, you can install "Android Terminal Emulator" from the Play Store and run the command "uptime", it tells you how much time has passed since the last boot
Or find an app that tells you that...

Hi all!
I'm running CM11 24.06 nightly, along with Devil3 kernel on my n7100.
I've recently updated from 06.06 nightly (I believe), which was a fresh install (full wipe, no updates before), but I have had this issue before already. I think it starts to happen after I perform an update to the newest nightly. Rolling back to previous one doesn't help - another full wipe and fresh install is required to fix this or at least I didn't find a solution.
So, what's the issue? There are four issues that, to me, are connected:
1. Waking up - I'm experiencing serious lag when waking up the device. Sometimes the device doesn't want to wake up for half a minute, sometimes it doesn't wake up at all and it requires me to restart it by holding the power button
2. Lag after unlocking - Most of the time though, when device is actually successfully woken up and I want to fe. go straight to SMS app from lock screen and type something immediately, phone freezes for a second and when I'm able to type (touchscreen reacts, letter-press animation plays) - the letters aren't appearing. Sometimes it takes a while after I can type, sometimes I have to close the app. I've tried different SMS apps, deleting big conversations, different keyboard apps (I'm using SwiftKey, but stock app is the same - this one actually remembers what I type, recommends me something, but when I tap to use the recommendation, nothing is being typed into the text box) and some other things.
3. Application start up time and white status bar - Apps are starting to drop in performance as well. For example, when I run, let's say Play Store, the status bar on top of the screen is flashing white and it takes a bit longer to be able to use them (just like the SMS app).
4. % battery usage of certain (unexpected?) apps - Most battery hunger process is Android System. I've reset battery stats, for the last 1h and 45min used phone to type 2-3 messages, and it's usage is @27%, whereas 2nd process is screen with 18% and 3rd is Android OS with 11%.
Restarting the device seems to temporarily fix first three issues. They start to come back as soon as I start using the device, like opening apps, etc.
As I said before, it all happens after performing an update. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I usually flash the update, restart device, go to recovery, flash kernel and restart. Since the issue happened again, I've tried to flash the new nightly and kernel together before, it didn't help. Clearing cache/dalvik is not helping (before, after).
I don't have any backups made (I know, I should've made one), so, I guess I'll prolly end up performing a full wipe again. But does anyone have some ideas what may be causing this? So I can prevent this for good next time, hopefully.

Well, like I said, everything is working fine after a fresh install (with full wipe prior to it), is it possible for kernel to cause that after a nightly update?

I was actually thinking about it, but as I said, when I used OmniRom few months ago, I recall that I had similar issues. Nevertheless thank you for your insight. Anyone have any slightest idea what might be causing such behavior?
I seem to have fixed the issue. Turns out the culprit was Business Calendar - Business Tasks to be more precise. I unistalled both and so far didn't experience those wake up lags.
I got my Nexus 7 when it first came out last year, rooted it, installed TWRP, and have been on several different ROMs since. Didn't have any issues with random reboots for several months. Early this year, I started having an issue where the tablet would freeze while I'm using it, then automatically reboot itself. I thought perhaps it was a problem with the ROM I was running, but I had switched ROMs a few times after that, and every single ROM I've been on since then has had the same problem. It usually only happens when I'm browsing the Internet (with Chrome being my browser of choice), but I've had it happen once while using the camera app, as well.
The other day, I upgraded TWRP to the latest version, and I installed the 4.04 bootloader in preparation for Lollipop ROMs. I was hoping on some slim chance that perhaps an upgraded bootloader might fix the problem, but I'm still getting random reboots.
I know I've seen people talk about random reboots as well, but in the past, I never saw anyone find any kind of solution. Is there one, or is it one of those things I just have to live with, at this point? It's odd to me that I didn't start experiencing this issue right away, and that it only started several months after I had had the device. To me, that makes it seem like it's not a hardware issue/ defect, but I guess no one has been able to pinpoint what the problem is, why it occurs, and how to fix it, huh?

I'd tend to agree with you it's a software thing. However, my approach would be a bit more radical than yours: that I would erase everything, including formatting the internal storage twice (after making a backup, of course), then install a completely clean rom, use it for a while to make sure it doesn't act up again before restoring any apps.
On the side, I've seen a Nexus doing random reboots whose owner had opened the back and bent the cover somehow, which slightly depressed the power button. While the button operated normally, this condition forced it to "click" randomly, which caused the reboots. It stopped after the owner replaced the back cover. You might want to check this part. Good luck.
Most of the time, random reboots are kernel related. If you are overclocked try to set max CPU lower and see if the problem fixes itself. If you don't overclock try installing something like Trickster Mod, and lower max CPU to see if that helps. What ROM and kernel are you running?

I always recommend flashing back to stock to rule out software issues. If it continues, you've got a hardware issue.
I haven't really messed around with kernels, I've typically just used whatever was included in a particular ROM, and I never adjust to overclock or anything like that. I don't remember what all the ROMs I've been on are, but I've been on CM before, and I'm currently using CleanROM. I think the only time I ever specifically tried a different kernel was a while back, when I flashed an Elemental kernel, but I've since wiped and been on a different ROM.
For now, I'm trying to hold out wiping anything until a good, rooted build of Lollipop is available, at which point, I'll try wiping out everything, including internal storage, and see if that helps.
I guess I could also try flashing back to stock before I do that, though. I think I've seen one stock ROM for the N7 floating around. The only problem is, it's really hard to "test" this, because the reboots are very inconsistent. The other day, after I had updated the bootloader, I was browsing Chrome for over an hour before I got a random reboot. One time, I was browsing Chrome for an hour and had 4-5 random reboots within that hour. So, that makes it difficult to determine if it's fixed in a timely manner. :/
Alright, so now that there's a proper build of Lollipop out, I did a factory reset and wiped internal storage (twice), and I'm now running stock Lollipop. I spent about an hour or so getting everything set up, and no reboots thus far; but the reboots mainly occur when I'm using Chrome, and I didn't really do any browsing, as I was getting all my accounts and apps and whatnot set up. Hopefully within the next couple of days, I'll have used it enough to get a good idea as to whether or not I'm still experiencing issues.
So far, no reboots, though i don't want to jinx it, heh... I'll be glad if the issue is finally fixed, but I'll also feel kinda dumb that all it took to fix it was something as simple as wiping internal storage and/ or reflashing a stock ROM. Lollipop is pretty nice, as well.
Yeah I'm using a custom version of L myself. You need to flash custom kernel to get working root access with SuperSU BETA 2.19

First off I'd like to say that I've already got the power switch replaced on this device. So I've ruled that out to some extent.
That being said, my device pretty much will freeze up at random times then either turn off or reboot. If it reboots, it will load the OS (or sometimes not even finish the boot), then either freeze up then reboot again, turn off, or freeze up and stay frozen for eternity. I've tried reverting to stock then reflashing all my **** and redownloading all my apps and stuff. While that helped for maybe, 3 days, it did not fix the issue. Also notable that this usually happens several times a day, and that sometimes leaving it on the charger helps it make a stable boot. I've also purchased a new battery with no luck. Not sure if this is related but figured it might be relevant that the device wakes randomly sometimes. This is not related to my specific ROM either, this happens on several pieces of firmware. Only cause I can think of is age (this model is almost 4 years old) or a faulty power switch (I've already had the switch replaced).
This has started to affect my schedule in that my phone loves to turn off when I'm sleeping so I miss my phone's alarm, which I highly depend on.
Completely unrelated issue but I'm on Sultan's Lollipop ROM and I can't download themes, apps, etc. The device gives me an error saying that the app/theme "failed to install". All of my current apps come from restoring /data from my 4.4.4 daily driver backup. Help with this would be very nice as well.
Thanks a ton in advance for the help.
Fixed! My overclock was too high. I can only assume that it was overheating, causing the freezing and rebooting. Min frequency is at 192 MHz and max is 1512. Stable for the time being.
As far as your reboots go, if it happens after flashing stock 4.1.2 with Odin, then it is hardware. Either the button still, or something else disrupting power momentarily.
Not sure about issue 2 though.
