Hi all!
I'm running CM11 24.06 nightly, along with Devil3 kernel on my n7100.
I've recently updated from 06.06 nightly (I believe), which was a fresh install (full wipe, no updates before), but I have had this issue before already. I think it starts to happen after I perform an update to the newest nightly. Rolling back to previous one doesn't help - another full wipe and fresh install is required to fix this or at least I didn't find a solution.
So, what's the issue? There are four issues that, to me, are connected:
1. Waking up - I'm experiencing serious lag when waking up the device. Sometimes the device doesn't want to wake up for half a minute, sometimes it doesn't wake up at all and it requires me to restart it by holding the power button
2. Lag after unlocking - Most of the time though, when device is actually successfully woken up and I want to fe. go straight to SMS app from lock screen and type something immediately, phone freezes for a second and when I'm able to type (touchscreen reacts, letter-press animation plays) - the letters aren't appearing. Sometimes it takes a while after I can type, sometimes I have to close the app. I've tried different SMS apps, deleting big conversations, different keyboard apps (I'm using SwiftKey, but stock app is the same - this one actually remembers what I type, recommends me something, but when I tap to use the recommendation, nothing is being typed into the text box) and some other things.
3. Application start up time and white status bar - Apps are starting to drop in performance as well. For example, when I run, let's say Play Store, the status bar on top of the screen is flashing white and it takes a bit longer to be able to use them (just like the SMS app).
4. % battery usage of certain (unexpected?) apps - Most battery hunger process is Android System. I've reset battery stats, for the last 1h and 45min used phone to type 2-3 messages, and it's usage is @27%, whereas 2nd process is screen with 18% and 3rd is Android OS with 11%.
Restarting the device seems to temporarily fix first three issues. They start to come back as soon as I start using the device, like opening apps, etc.
As I said before, it all happens after performing an update. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I usually flash the update, restart device, go to recovery, flash kernel and restart. Since the issue happened again, I've tried to flash the new nightly and kernel together before, it didn't help. Clearing cache/dalvik is not helping (before, after).
I don't have any backups made (I know, I should've made one), so, I guess I'll prolly end up performing a full wipe again. But does anyone have some ideas what may be causing this? So I can prevent this for good next time, hopefully.

Well, like I said, everything is working fine after a fresh install (with full wipe prior to it), is it possible for kernel to cause that after a nightly update?

Some time ago I had OmniRom and after few OTAs I actually started noticing similar issue if I recall correctly (that was the reason for me to switch back to CM).
mybe u try..full wipe..wipe data..wipe cache..wipe system..wipe internal storage..

But that's the point, I'll probably end up doing it since restarting my phone every 30-60 minutes is out of the question. But, then what? every few nightly/snapshot I'm gonna perform a full wipe?

I was actually thinking about it, but as I said, when I used OmniRom few months ago, I recall that I had similar issues. Nevertheless thank you for your insight. Anyone have any slightest idea what might be causing such behavior?
I seem to have fixed the issue. Turns out the culprit was Business Calendar - Business Tasks to be more precise. I unistalled both and so far didn't experience those wake up lags.

Hi all,
I recently installed SyndicateRom Frozen after I got stuck on Eb13 thanks to Sprint. It worked out really well (so fast!) for a while but I am now having problems varying from strange but tolerable to very bad.
Here is the exact order of what I've done:
1) from eb13, I used odin to get DI18, then modem only to EC05, installed CWM3 and wiped data/cache/dalvik cache 3x each.
2) I used CWM3 to flash SyndicateRom Frozen (the latest version)
3) it worked pretty well, but then I (stupidly I guess) installed Go Launcher Ex and then everything went to hell
4) it ran for a while then suddenly EVERYTHING force closed. restarting it just gave me 9000 more force close boxes. so I...
5) wiped data/cache/dalvik 3x, re-flashed syndicateROM
So here I am now with the following problems:
1) The phone randomly freezes irreversibly (only solution is to pull the battery). It seems like it happens in the browser only (stock Syndicate browser)
2) The phone randomly freezes for a little while only (all the time)
3) The email app force closed (fixed this for now by clearing its data, from forum)
4) With auto-rotate OFF, nothing rotates EXCEPT my phone page.. What the heck? The phone page (ie click the phone icon) rotates regardless of what setting auto-rotate is on
5) The phone sometimes just decides to restart itself. And rarely, the restart never finishes.
6) Whenever I open up google navigation, it says "checking navigation availability" for 5-10 seconds. This never happened before
Now, what do I have running?
-SetCpu (this was running before I had go launcher and I had no problems). it's set very modestly -- 200-400 with screen off (and I dont have the no-wakeup problems some people talk about) and 400-10000 with the screen on, on demand.
-Ultimate Juice
If anyone knows what I can do to fix this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Thanks for the detailed post - it helps. Your issues, though, are almost definitely kernel-related. Freezing is a sign you need to use kernel version 1.0.4 linked from the second post, or VisionKernel. Try VisionKernel first. If it solves your issue, you're good to go.
Anything related to screen rotation is outside of the ROM - run the sensor calibration process.

im having similar problems, but mine only occur when the battery dies
after i restart a lot of my apps are force closing without even running them, and when i press the home button the screen is blank. (i also use go launcher)
You kno this same thing happened to me. I finally realized it was probably because I was restoring my apps with titanium. I decided to just re-download my apps and restore only app data with titanium (angry birds etc.). This helped me. And this was all after installing launcher pro. So there was some sort of conflict there. Are you restoring apps?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i didnt restore my apps with titanium that time but i switched from go launcher to launcher pro and i dont have that problem anymore
Hmm...i guess just stay away from that launcher then...haha.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm not sure if his problems were strictly Go Launcher related. I've been using Go for 2 days now, with no problems (yet... knock on wood).
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
So here's an update:
-No, I'm not using Titanium backup.. I manually reinstall all my apps.
-I tried out the VisionKernel and it seemed ok for a bit, but I'm freezing again and my apps are all force closing. I uninstalled SetCpu completely in case that was causing a problem, but it didn't make a difference.
I'm going to try using v1.04 next... if that fails I guess I just can't use this rom
Would setting myself back to DI18 -> EC05 -> Syndicate possibly work? (as opposed to just re-flashing syndicate)
This was happening to me regardless of my kernel, and I even (twice) ODIN'd to [DI18?] then OTA to EC05 and then wiped everything 3 times, and flashed, 1st flash never works for me, so 2 flashes both times completely clean as well as when flashing kernels
1.0.2 worked just fine for me but as soon as 1.1.0 came I get freezes and FC's all over the place. I have given up on 1.1.0 and will try it when a newer version comes out
Media
First off want to say, love the ROM so far, you guys rock. After a few failed attempts at getting CWM 3 on my phone, I was finally able to do so and get everything installed. The only problem I'm having is with my media files. I get random FC when I play my music, my photo gallery doesn't appear, when I try to access my mp3's directly from my SD card, it says "file type not found" and it does not like the Zedge app at all. I've tried both the standard and fully loaded versions with the same results. I have the visionkernel downloaded, just in case I need to try it, but if at all possible, I'd like to stick with the twilight (I use the camcorder often). Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

As noted many times in many places, if you're having issues with 1.1.0 that aren't freezing/battery life (these are both the kernel and have been discussed everywhere), a few simple troubleshooting steps will get you exactly where you need to be.

My issue is freezing, and I tried all of the alternate kernels. Sorry if my language wasn't precise- I mean new kernels.
I've actually given it one last try...I'm wondering if the clock is set too low for my phone by default, so I've got setcpu on min400 max1000. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out... (Stable so far although suddenly my home key doesn't work, hah.)

400mhz shouldn't be necessary. If your freezes were wakelocks, and you had your minimum frequency at 100mhz, that was your problem - not all devices can handle it, and need to be at 200mhz.

They were actually freezes during use-- I luckily never got a single wakelock.
I'm not sure if there was a pattern or not, but I think the Market, Go SMS Pro, stock Email, and stock browser were the main freezes. Then again, those are also the apps I use quite frequently
Sorry to double reply, but I can't edit yet.
@androikid
It just occurred to me that the freezes wouldn't be that bad if not for the force closes that occur afterward (due to data corruption). Maybe we should just turn journaling on so the a freeze just means a restart, rather than a re-flash.
This discussion started in this development thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623430
First off there are 2 different issues related to app hangs.
1) An issue with root apps hanging. This has been fixed with an updated superuser (@wraithdu v3.1) and Busybox (@wraithdu v1.19.4). This is not the issue being discussed in this thread.
2) An issue with non-root apps failing to launch. This includes random apps failing to launch from the app drawer and home screens (of various launchers, TW, Apex, GO, Nova). This includes the Phone app opening and displaying mostly a black screen. Existing apps that are open in the background still function and can be opened.
Issue #2 has been seen since Darkside released the first ICS ROMs. Specifically I have reproduced it in Evolution.3 Beta03, v1, v2, v4, v5.
Here are some of the relevant posts in chronological order:

BTW, I wasn't closing any apps via task manager and I only restored DATA to the apps that automatically downloaded from the Play Store. Not really sure if that matters at all or not in the issue of unresponsiveness.

The first suggestion that this is likely an app problem and that the ROM is fine:
pyraxiate said:
Using Apex here. Installed and running since release with zero issues. When I was on v2, I had this happen while using apex, and narrowed it down to an application hanging. Once I was finally able to get into settings and forced closed it, the launcher began working properly again. The only way I was able to get into settings was by having it up prior to the hanging, and held the home button to bring up task manager. Give that a shot and let us know.
I don't use TI , scripts, or change cpu settings. Always a 2x darkside wipe, flash, wait 10 minutes, then set up from scratch. Battery life is excellent ( 4 + hours screen on time ). Everyone with all these problems really should just run this ROM Naked.... its beautiful

A claim that widgets that need root might be causing this. The only root needing widget that I use is Multi-mount lite and it has been enabled/installed during every app launch hang that I've seen.

I think it might be an issue with the half root TDJ was taking about. I've noticed certain Widgets require root to be added to the homescreen. Maybe the widget is hanging because of improper permissions? Come to think of it, I was trying a wifi sharing toggle which caused my hangup

Happened to me with Darkside beta03, v1, and v2 running Apex Launcher and Go Launcher EX.
I just flashed Darkside v4 and I'm in the middle of re-installing all apps and re-adding every account and configuration manually. Previous flashes involved restoring user apps w/ data so I'm trying to figure out if that has something to do with it.
Recovery is CWM 5.0.2.7 non-Touch as recommended in OP. Also I used none of the wiping options in the recovery and let the wipe scripts do it all.

I start working on repeatable reproduction steps for the issue:
Splaktar said:
CWM 5.0.2.7 non-Touch recovery as recommended in the OP. I let the super wipe script do all of the wiping and don't wipe with CWM.
OK, I just hit this with a fresh v4 install. Absolutely no data has been restored to my device from backups. I did let Google restore apps and I went into a number of them to login/configure.
Here are the steps leading up to hitting it and (whether or not they have been involved in previous reproductions):
0) Connect to WiFi. WiFi-Calling enabled. (always)
1) Play some music via Google Music or some other streaming source. (always)
2) Stream the music over BT (most always)
3) Have the phone plugged into USB charging on a desktop w/ usb storage off (most always)
4) Browse around my home screens which contain about 13 widgets on 8 screens (always)
5) Add remove and re-add widgets to a screen (sometimes)
6) Launch a previously unopened app (since reboot) from a shortcut on one of the home screens or from the app drawer (always)
7) Re-use an app that has recently been opened (always)
It is not as if following these steps one by one will reproduce this within 5 minutes. But this clean install lasted me only 1 hour 5 minutes before this app launch hang occurred.
This last reproduction I had just restarted my Launcher (Go Launcher EX) and was in the middle of re-adding a widget, but when I clicked on the widgets icon to open the list, nothing happened. So I gave up on that and backed out.
Then I opened an app on one of my home screens and it highlighted, but did not launch or open. Then I went to try some other apps with the same result. I also tried some in the app drawer, same result.
So then I long pressed home and selected an already open app. It came up just fine. I was able to use the app and then finally go back Home without any issues.
I also got the task manager open. I'm at 667/769 MB RAM. System storage is at 0.93 GB / 1.97 GB. USB and SD card storage are not close to full either. There is only one active app (the one that I just had opened). I did 'Exit All' and then closed task manager and tried to open an app. Same hang.
Try to access settings via widgets, nothing. Try to do Menu->Settings, nothing.
Try to open another hanging app, highlights, then nothing. Wait 5 minutes or so and the app, sort of opens... I get the title bar at top and the rest of the app is all black. Wait 5 more minutes, nothing changes. Can't go back to get out of it. But home takes me back to the home screen.
Open Phone app, it opens, but the back button from the app lags and does nothing, then finally instead of taking me back home, it takes me the last hung app w/ just the title and black screen.
Home again takes me out and back to the home screen. Menu works, so I do Restart of the Launcher. This results in the wallpaper displaying but the launcher does not ever redraw the screens (hung). Only the notification bar works at this point.
I guess I'll try to grab a logcat now since it's basically completely hosed now... no luck with a logcat. Can't get the device to show up in adb. Maybe USB debugging is still off since this is a completely fresh install w/o any data restored.
Edit: Rebooted, USB Debugging was turned on, but I guess it just couldn't launch it when it was connected. Device shows up fine now in adb.

So Super SU fixes this or just the latest binary of Superuser? I'm currently running Superuser with su binary of v3.0.3.2.
I'm going on 18 hours without an app launch issue/reboot now that I have the new Busybox (1.20.1-Stericson). But I've made it this far before only to have apps hang after 22 hours or so. I'll be convinced once it makes it 5 days.

A good point is brought up about the lack of ALPHA kernel being in the OP subject line and that app launch hangs are not listed in the known issues section even after 10+ reports by users:

I don't like stock though... And I really, REALLY like TDJ's work. But it just gets irritating sometimes. But just curious, why is not marked in the title that is using an alpha kernel. I mean, I know that it says in the changelog thingy, but that isn't really making it known. And maybe the reason why it been posted several times is that people don't want to/have the time to read through 600 pages of posts. And it isn't listed in the known problems, there it only says "Reboot/Shutdown Hangs", that's it. Nothing on no being able to open apps.

I report on my testing in v5 and post a set of fairly quickly reproducible steps:
Splaktar said:
I'm still seeing the app launch hangs in v5. I had been running for almost 48 hours (my best yet) on v4 after upgrading to Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson and staying with Superuser and the su binary v3.0.3.2. I only stopped using that to upgrade to v5 this morning.
I tried v5 using just the Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson along with SU binary v3.1 and still had a hang.
I also tried v5 with Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson and Superuser with the su binary v3.0.3.2 and still had a hang.
I've been able to reproduce the problem fairly quickly by opening a lot of apps and processes that run in the background. After about 15 minutes, I can get it down to 90-150 MB of free RAM. Then turn off the screen and let the phone idle for about 10 minutes. Then within a bit more usage it will finally hang.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm trying to at least do what I can to get this figured out. I'm nandroid'ing my v5 install now and going back to my last v4 that ran for almost 48 hours to see if that was a fluke and if I can get it to hang on app launching.

I'm starting to think that it may be an issue with ICS or at least Samsung's version of it for the T989.

I report back on my 100% clean v4 install and how it still hung. I talk about how the RAM is handled and that I don't ever seem to run out of RAM. The OS is freeing RAM from old apps and keeping my free RAM over 90 MBs all of the time. Also suggest that I will try to reproduce the issue on the stock rooted ROM.
Splaktar said:
Just got done nandroid'ing back to my v4 w/ Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson and Superuser and the su binary v3.0.3.2. I performed the same repro steps (it isn't anything close to trying to kill it) by just opening up some apps. Then letting the phone rest 10 minutes. Then opening up a few more apps. It still hung, so that combination of factors didn't fix anything and I was just lucky to get almost 48 hours out of it without a reboot.
I guess the next step it to load up Mr. X's stock ROM and see if I can reproduce the issue with the same steps there. It is nice to be able to reproduce it in 30 minutes now and not need to wait 6-40 hours for it to 'just happen'.
I'm really starting to think that it is an issue with Samsung/TMO's code. I did count the number of apps in ICS's task history view. It was 19. I'm not sure if 19 or 20 is the limit? It might be an issue with how that feature is implemented.
It doesn't seem to be a RAM issue because I am seeing Android clear up more RAM every time I get down below 100 MBs free and open a new app.

A question about task killers and a claim that it might help manage the issue:

Anyone that has app and/or launcher hangs do you ever clear your ram with the built in task manager? Are you leaving all your background app running? I'm a little ocd when it comes to my phone so I'm always clearing background apps and freeing up my ram. Just a thought

A confirmation that you can't open the Task Manager unless it is already running (and hasn't been freed) if you see app launch hangs:

OK, there might have been some posts missed that didn't include "app" or "hang" but that it all that I've gathered up for now.

I've created a thread to investigate/debug the app launch hang issue. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27754152#post27754152
If you have issues with apps not launching from the app drawer, home screen, or widget, then please post your issues in that thread which is focused on this issue and not here.
It looks like this might be related to a certain app or set of apps being installed on top of this ROM that causes the issue.

Additionally, I have been running the Stock Rooted ROM from 6/13 (with camera fixed) along with the modified Radio from the Darkside Evolution.3 thread for the last 3 hours.
I have tried to reproduce the issue which I have been able to reproduce in under 30 minutes on v4 and v5. But so far I have not been able to reproduce it. This is with only an extreme bare minimum of apps installed on top of the stock ROM (that I can't live without).
I am going to start restoring apps and widgets to the phone and then running the reproduction steps until I hit a hang. Then I will work on isolating the exact app or widget that is causing this problem.
Installed in initial version (my must have apps, no widgets).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
SWTOR security key
Google Authenticator
TB
WeatherBug
Amazon Appstore
Google Drive
Gentle Alarm
SwiftKey X
Tapatalk
VIP Access
Google Voice
Installed in second version (my most suspect apps, but still no widgets).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
Facebook
WhatsApp
Unlock With WiFi
Skype
Scorecenter
SetCPU
QuickBoot
ROM Manager
Multi Mount SD-Card Lite
Well I haven't gotten a hang yet on the Stock ROM but I did get it to soft boot TW and disconnect my WiFi and BT while streaming music on Google Music and setting up Sync on Facebook. So Facebook is looking quite suspicious. Has anyone reproduced the app hangs without Facebook installed?
This soft reboot of TW also caused the time to be switched to GMT which has been reported on the TMO support forums with the stock ROM.
I ran test #2 here for well over an hour and I could not get another soft reboot or a single app launch hang. I did get some stuttering of music and slowdowns due to overloading the CPU and/or RAM and garbage collection. But nothing was unrecoverable or did not resolve itself with some time to let the CPU catch up. No reboots were needed.
Installed in third version (my most suspect apps AND widgets).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
All apps from tests 1 and 2.
Scorecenter widget
Scorecenter video widget
Agenda widget
News and weather widget
Multi Mount SD-card lite widget
Google Voice widget
Digital Clock widget
I ran test #3 here for about another 45 minutes and saw no difference in performance or behavior. I did note that while the Multi Mount SD-card lite widget does show up in TW. Clicking on it does not appear to work (it delays a while and then gets su access, but never displays its dialog confirmaton). But it never caused a soft reboot or any app launch hangs.
Installed in fourth version (all of my apps, widgets, GO Launcher and Apex).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
I've been banging on the stock ROM with all of my apps and widgets installed for over an hour now. I've seen 2 soft reboots, usually when RAM/CPU usage gets high and the OS can't handle things. It is possible that this bug triggers a soft reboot in the stock ROM but instead triggers the app launch hang bug in darkside ROMs. But I haven't generally noticed the phone slowing down and music stuttering when I've had the app launch hang issue, but I do very much notice it on the stock ROM right before a soft reboot.
I'm going to run this stock ROM w/ all apps/widgets over night and see if I can make it through. So far I've only been using TW. But in another hour or so I'll enable Go Launcher and Apex for a couple hours each.
Overnight update:
I ran Apex for about 30 minutes, no issues. Ran Go Launcher for about 2 hours of use plus overnight time. Everything is still working just fine this morning. Already put in about an hour worth of use this morning with no issues yet.
So far after over a full day or testing and following reproduction steps for hours (that I can cause an app launch hang with on Darkside v5 in ~20 minutes), I am not able to cause an app launch hang on the stock ROM.
Here are the stock issues that I did find, which if seen on Darkside should not be reported against the ROM or to TDJ:
1) soft reboots when OS gets overloaded, disconnects wifi, BT, etc shuts down all apps.
2) Soft reboots cause timezone to get set to GMT
Edit 06/27: I've now been running the Stock rooted ROM from Mr.X for at least 3 full days of regular usage without a single app launch hang. During regular usage, I haven't seen any of the soft reboots or timezone issues either. I have run into issues with uninstalling bloatware though. I keep getting Delete Failed when trying to remove it from /system/app.
Yeah I spoke too soon as well. Not getting the app not opening up issue. I'm currently on v5. For me, I noticed that the times it has happened. It's been on the lower quadrant of battery drain. So when my battery gets lower than 25%. Not sure if that makes a significance on how the ram is handled. I noticed also my battery will start to get hot after the issue occurs before I end up rebooting my device.
I have also tried fresh installing the ROM and installing my apps manually without using any app for restoring just in case that was the issue which it turns out not to be the case for me since it still happens.
I hope we get this thing squashed. Or I may finally switch to a different ROM or back to stock for me with bloat removed.

I really don't think the launcher is (solely?) to blame. When you open the Phone app, it opens (unlike everything else) but opens to a black screen with a blue gradient bar on top. You can also swipe away running apps via long-press home. It sounds like it may be a kernel issue?
For me, Skype randomly hangs on Darkside ROMs. It takes 4-5 force-stops to get one running properly.

I've noticed some issues with Skype too. That's why it made my list of most suspect apps. Many of my app launch hangs occurred while I had Skype open and running in the background. It eats up quite a lot of memory.
But so far while testing on the stock ROM, I haven't had any issues with Skype at all.
ive had the app hangs on all the ics roms i have tried ,darkside cache wipe and clearing launcher cache helps, but still there everyone once in awhile not with any specific app but with several.also when this happens i looke at the task manager and the ram is almost maxed out maybe ics is not handling the ram very well.just my observation.
Thanks for this thread, i wanted to comment in the Darkside Evo. v5 but i couldnt as i'm new.
I experienced the hang the last time when i tried to open the facebook chat, that was on version 5, i really liked v4 for all the features but there i got a lot of hangs several times a day doing random tasks, i had like 50 apps installed but i was removing them every time more and more.
Finally i decided to format both SD cards, internal and external and everything got better, but i have only had one hang in v5 several days ago, recently i've been messing with the phone trying several ROMS but now i'm back with v5 and im going to treat the phone like a b*tch to see if i can reproduce the hang with a clean clean installation, by the way im using the phoenix69 AOSP theme lockscreen, the aosp theme pack and some other stuff that is compatible...
I'll try to post if i get a new hang, i suspected of the powerful control widget, as the cause of the hang.
By the way, thanks for this extensive investigation Splaktar, i really wanted to be part of it.
Got another app hang.
I was configuring the phone after a clean installation, configuring options, putting some shortcuts, adding some widgets in Tw launcher, i installed apex and go launcher and used them a bit then returned to TW, i have the widgets: picture frame, accuweather, google search, power saving, and ICS clock, 3g watchdog small...
the case is i was messing around with some voice search on Dolphin Browser, when it happened, i minimezed the screen or don't remember exactly what happened but i wasn't able to open some apps, other do, but not all of them, which i found strange... system apps won't open, it really sucks this hang apps thing... i dont remember this happened on the darkside evo. 2 betas.
i can say that this happened in the exact moment i reached 65% battery.
Could it be something battery related? IDK.

Same here, no issue with Skype on stock ROMs.
But I got the same hanging issues on CM9 Alpha.
Updated 2nd post with results from testing last night and this morning.
Going to flash the stock ROM on a 2nd phone for further testing. Then go to a clean Darkside v5 ROM with no apps installed to see if I can reproduce.
So annoying that this issue doesn't leave any useful logcat information. There are 2 sets of logcats in the Darkside Evolution.3 thread that I haven't linked/posted here yet.
Doubt it helps but this just happened to me again on v5 but since I use Tasker and iseeyou and since they are ongoing tasks, I could actually open Tasker and iseeyou from the notification tray. Still had to reboot to use anything else, though.

Got another hang, this time opening the picture frame widget, the one that comes with the rom.
AT 64% OF MY BATTERY AGAIN.
Yesterday it was at 65%, it happened doing stuff in Dolphin browser which i uninstalled, then i restarted and continued using the phone until the battery drained, but no hang this time, i fully charged the battery, and got another hang at 64% exactly the moment i tried to open the picture frame widget.
This time i had 4 apps running in the background, google search, XDA devs pro, and i forgot the other two. I may be a noob or whatever, but my battery is my principal suspect or something power related, or the way how interacts power management and apps. i will try again.
I doubt its battery related as I just got my lockup while sitting at 100% on a charger.

Right, most/many of my app launch hangs have occurred while at 80-100% and connected to the charger.

Hi again.
As i read the last replies, i connected my charger at 71% of my battery, after restarting and this time i really tried to get the hang, and i got it again with the picture frame widget, after i tried to open it the freezing started.
Other apps that i opened while doing thisalways hitting the home button to try to have them in background)
gmail
task manager (killed some apps and ram before)
talk (chatted with the guru a little)
chrome beta (opening some of my computer's tabs)
dialer
playstore
youtube (watched some videos then returned home)
speedtest (did some tests and aborted)
Google reader
the gallery who caused the crash
twitter
calculator
messaging
power saving
Those were the last things i triied with the charger connected, i was at 71%
activated all that can be activated (3g, wifi, gps, autosync, even the flashlight, everything, then the battery dropped to 70% charging and finally got the freezing. I think i will return to stock... until the problem is fixed... i really love TDJ Rom, and i hope to be back soon. I will try Mr.x stock rooted slightly modified ROM and Try to reproduce the hang.
Thanks for this Thread again, this app hang is really bad i wonder what causes it.

This testing is being done with Mr. X's Stock Rooted ROM. It does not appear to have the app launch hang.
Your apps are quite different from mine and we both have the issue. Plus my own testing appears to have shown that apps are not causing this behavior. So I'm fairly sure that this is an issue with the Darkside ROM base. There were some posts that said CM9 has some app launch hangs as well so there might be parts that TDJ got from CM9 that are causing the app launch hangs.
I agree that the Darkside ROM is amazing. I really find it hard to live without the notification bar toggles and the notification bar slide for brightness. Plus the wallpapers and other customizations are awesome. But having to reboot once or twice a day at random (often inopportune) times can be quite annoying or worse.
I got a freezing problem with my note2. It's quite a strange behavior, got worse pretty fast since yesterday (tried to reflect the situation exactly below).
The freeze behaves like: system freezes, apps freeze, buttons stop working, sometimes the notification bar pull-down still works for 1-2 seconds, BUT: animated icons in the notification bar are sometimes (not always) still animating up to 2-3 minutes. Can also happen with display off, can't turn on anymore.
Since I'm using a ROM that's safe from the SDS problem, it cant be that. Still I mention that I do have that insane chip (Type: VTU00M, FwRev: 0xf1).
My guess is its a hardware related problem, maybe the internal flash memory(?).
Still, it will be hard to restore back to stock for warranty with the usb not working to use Odin.
Original Baseband: XXALJ2
History of this phone (maybe not 100% accurate, it's hard to recall everything exactly):
Bought on release
rooted some weeks later
flashed CM ~spring, regularly updated
July: stopped showing modem signal strength
July: switched to Asylum CM10.x, updated on new version releases
September: USB stopped working correctly when connecting to computer (charging but no data, different cables, ports, computers)
October: started freezing randomly, approx every second day, getting slighly more often
Since Yesterday:
-did a full wipe/factory reset, reflashed rom. more and faster freezes
-as i was messing around, decided to do a modem update: from XXALJ2 to XXDMF1: radio signal strength working again. Freezing increased.
-reverted to backup, also restored old modem: Crazy fast freezings, withing 30sek after every boot.
-again some full wipes/clean install with different but still recent asylum roms: freezings a little better than with a backup, but still crazy fast.
-full wipe with format internal storage: freezes got better, occur after minutes instead of seconds. They still occur faster when using a backup instead of a new install. Same with CM 10.1.3.
No custom kernels used. Default governors. No TB restores or something that I could think of messing with stuff.
Any help or ideas are very appreciated
I could manage to restore stock via Odin (1 in 100 times it detects the usb connection on my laptop), with 4.1.1 Had a freeze, made the OTR update to 4.1.2. Had another freeze. After that 2 more updates. It also changed the Baseband every time, its now DMF1 (same as i upgraded). No freezes anymore. I mean, what the heck? This makes no sense for me at all. If someone can lighten me up, please, go ahead.
It all sounds like SDS. Don't forget that SDS happens if there is a memory block corrupted. If you were in an insane rom before (and you said you bought it in release so almost sure you did) the memory blocks got corrupted. that happened "a lot" of people in the SDS thread(between commas taking in account that here in xda there is not the whole group of people who bought it and percentatge is low).
I recommend you to use emmc brickbug check app and check the memory blocks(if you are rooted)
then if it is SDS the only thing that we can do is pray or wait to samsung not to give free repairs only to China.
hoping that you'll pass the blocks test and it was only a normal problem..

Thanks for your reply.
SDS was the first thing I thought could be the issue. But it run for months without a single freeze on a SDS-safe rom before it started.
The last thing I have done before reverting to stock was a memory check with emmc brickbug app, and it passed. I forgot to mention it, even it's very interesting: while the memory check was running I had the longest runtime without a freeze.
I'm thinking now of returning the phone for warranty because of the USB problem. It's probably too risky to get back to stock once again. If I even could manage to root it again. But tell them too I had freezes? hmm, it's really not happening now anymore
I have the same problem... no idea what should I do
well... Yesterday I took a try and swtiched the CWM. I had TWRP and I've switch to Phliz Touch, so far... 16 hours without freeze

hmm, I also switched back to CWM recovery (from TWRP) for the last boot (to restore the nandroid stock backup I did, but could manage to flash with Odin before I had to do it that way), that was the point where I was surprised that the emmc memory check did go through without a freeze. I didn't saw any relation to the problem here, but who knows?
So far 34 hours without a freeze

Same problem, been suffering with freezes for the last 3 weeks and the last 2 days have been 400% worse, found out about this emmc bug but cannot find any information as to how to fix it, some mention kernals, vodafone will not replace the phone unless their software update does not fix it, Running 3.99 RC2 Paranoid android. Anybody got any ideas?
Seems my phone is one of the effect chips with the emmc issue. Funny thing is i just flashed back to stock in order to take my phone back to the shop and its working fine.... not a single issue all day.
Is there something custom roms are doing that party causes this issue?

I was having different issues including freezes and WiFi/BT loss when kernels with undervolt installed. Usually from custom ROMs. The effect is prolonged sometimes till hardware reset done.
The only working solution (for me) is to use a kernel with controlled voltages and set all the voltages about 1000mV for frequencies below 800MHz. 100% stable,
Hi, im running AndroidNow 6.1 and since i installed ot for the first time(version 3.2) my launcher crushes every once n awhile.
It happens with stock, google, nova or any other launcher - i prefer stock.
What happens really is, when i press home/back to exit an app to the homescreen, there pops the recent apps screen(with no open apps visible)and when i press home again to exit this screen , i see blank home page and then the icons refresh and everything reload. Latet when i open the app drawer i experience a little lag that the icons are reloaded also.
What seems to be the problem? Im rooted and ive got clean master but i dont think its related.
Please help me, thanks.
Am i the only one who experience this?
Happened to me few times. You are using 3rd party launcher?
Ps. You dont need clean master
i use the stock one,but it happned with all . why shouldn't i use it?
Tell me why you should?
This devices does not need that. It does more harm then use.
I love the feature that it prevents apps from starting on boot up.
Do you know how to solve my problem with the launcher crash?
I have the exact same problem.
This happened with the stock ROM and any launcher I tried.
Then I flashed a custom ROM (based on stock though), progressively reinstalled applications and after some time, the problem came again. Then, I progressively froze some applications with Titanium Backup, and now it happens much less than before (2-3 times a day against everytime I press "home").
My conclusion is that, even though that's a launcher crash we see, the fault probably comes from a background application. I'm still searching which one. Did you find something interesting since you opened the topic?

What I did recently was to :
- Disable the application "LIA Informant"
- Disable the application "LIA MrGDBLogger"
- Disable the application "LIA S4URecommender"
- Clear the cache (click on Settings > Storage > Data in cache)
The problem happened several times in a day before, but only occured a few times in weeks since I did this trick. The workaround was probably clearing the cache. But since the problem gradually came back after the last time I reinitialized the phone, I'm still afraid it comes back sooner or later.
I did clear cache a few times now - it always comes back.
Would be great if someone could find a fix for that, because it's very annoying.
The bad thing is that there is no send error report option. At least there would be a starting point with an error info etc.
Have you tried disabling the applications mentionned above?
I (almost) chose them randomly, but it really made a difference for me and the problem doesn't seem to come back.
Done that just now.
Will post back with the results in some time.
Do you maybe know what those apps do ? (I like to know what I'm turning off in case of any other problems)
GDB (in the Unix world) is a debugger. I have no reason to think that this GDB is the same though, I just guessed the problem should come from a system application and this one may be one.
Turning off those apps made no difference.
Was thinking that it may be one of the widgets on the home screen.
Later today, or maybe tomorrow I'll make a list of what I'm using and post it here - maybe this way we'll get whats causing this.
The only widgets I have now are Zooper Widget and Shuttle+.
But honestly, since the problem makes any launcher crash (and I think any application left in foreground when the screen turns off), I believe the root of the problem a system app/optimization, and likely one from LG since not many people seem to complain.
I hope 5.1.1 will come soon to the G3.
Any news on any update ? (not necessarily to 5.1.1)
Udated to 20p yesterday - clean update (just to be sure I've wiped 3 times - 1 before and 2 after the update).
Had a couple of hours of peace, and then it started again.

I updated to CM 12.1 two weeks ago and never encountered this problem since then.
I had my Pixel 2 XL since first release, running stock releases updated each month, stock kernel, and using Magisk. I also have a Pixel 2, configured exactly the same way as the 2 XL and the exact same apps. Apps are updated at the same time, same for patch releases. I carry both and use them interchangeably each day. They provide carrier/coverage diversity and allow for a longer day without charge.
A few days ago, with no known reason, my 2 XL started exhibiting a very strange lag behavior. In trying to resolve the issue, I have tried clearing Dalvik, flashing back to February, re-flashing March, and today flashing to April. I have also cleared certain app data and tried a custom kernel Nothing has helped. The problem does not exist on P2.
The lag I have observed so far:
1) I use the Google Calendar "agenda" widget. On boot, the widget is blank and shows "loading" and can take 10 or 15 minutes for the agenda items to populate (as opposed to immediately upon start up).
2) Playstore app updates: It downloads the app, but seemingly hangs and the update is VERY VERY slow.
3) On flashing the April patch, on first boot, the "Completing Android update" notification progress bar took about 45 minutes to complete (as opposed to a few seconds like it should).
4) I use Lightflow. On launching the app, I keep getting "app not responding" message. If I keep tapping "wait", it will eventually load. It is just loading VERY slowly.
I firmly believe that all of these issues are related to a single problem, like a system resource that causing these lags. At this time, I cannot update apps because it would take hours just to update one app.
I really don't want to do a factory reset if I can help it. Too many things to reconfigure, even with TiBu. Does anyone have any idea as to what might be the cause? I would really appreciate any input.
Thanks.

Thanks.

I don't have a good answer for you my friend other than trying to run it in Safe mode for a while to see if it helps. Other than that, only other thing you probably can do is a factory reset, which, I know, bites the big one!

Thanks for that suggestion! The only condition I was able to test was to update apps. It went fine in Safe Mode. I rebooted back into regular mode and app update would hang. Based on what I read, the culprit would be a 3rd-party app?
I looked through all the apps that were updated in the past few days and do not see an app that would have the sort of large impact. There is no abnormal CPU utilization. Keep in mind that my Pixel 2 has the exact same apps and are updated at the same time. It has no such issues. I'm still lost.
The only update that could have an impact is Google Play Services. I'm on beta 12.5.21. Again, no issues w/ Pixel 2. I assume others don't have issues, we would otherwise heard about it by now.
Edit: Does safe mode run the ROM version of the Google Play Services?

Yeah the only slowdown I've ever had was I think right before the February update. I never restart my phone or let it die so I had been 25+ something days of uptime. Restart was all I needed and it was the only 25+ days uptime that had any slowdown. I'm stock and only beta app I'm running is LastPass.

My phone lags BADLY when I use Snapchat and facebook.
Considering the affected apps (Google Calendar agenda widget, Lightflow, Playstore "install" process, etc.). What do all these have in common?

Did you ever figure this out?
I'm still on March and have started having this issue. It's related to charging the device. Whenever I charge (and even after pulling off the charger) Lightflow becomes extremely laggy. Also, installing apps from the Play store exhibits the behavior you described in OP. Interacting with notifications is very laggy as well (i.e. - tap a notification to open the corresponding app, and the notification disappears and nothing happens...then 2 minutes later the app opens). This goes on until a reboot. After that, everything is fine until I charge again. Which, fortunately for me, is only once every 3 days.
Was not having this issue until recently and have been on March for a few weeks.

I have not, unfortunately. The Playstore app install has, for the most part, resolved itself, but the hang does return from time to time. Lightflow is still a problem. I wrote the dev but there is no response. The other issue is the Google Calendar agenda widget. It takes 10-20 minutes to load on reboot. Mind you, the month widget works just fine.
Take a look at these threads:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/moto-z-force/803793-calendar-widget-doesnt-load-data.html
https://forums.androidcentral.com/google-pixel-pixel-xl/855985-screen-widget-loading-8-1-boot.html
They describe similar issues. I've also found other, similar observations but with no resolve.
I am on April and have tried a custom kernel. No joy.
Edit: Since I cannot test the calendar widget nor Lightflow in Safe Mode, I don't know if it actually is a system-related issue.
Edit 2: I do see a strange connection with charging, especially with Playstore installations and lags.

The only widget I use is the Fit step counter. That has always taken a minute or so to even show up on the home screen after a boot (8.0/8.1) for me. I don't feel it's related to my issue as that has persisted through all software versions I've used so far.
I'm beginning to think the lightflow issue is just that....a lightflow issue and it is affecting notifications, globally. And, it is somehow tied to charging state. I've seen lightflow do some weird crap over the years. I remember a simple gmail update caused lightflow to send my then device (htc tbolt) into constant reboots.

Well sir, you are EXACTLY correct. Based on your ideas, I disabled Lightflow and rebooted my phone. All was back to normal. Once I re-enabled LF, the problems came back. Thank you very much for pointing out your observations. I would have not considered LF to be the source of the problem, but it is now so clear. Again, I can't thank you enough (I'll "thank" both of your posts)!
I will try clearing the LF data to see if that solves the problem. I will report back.

Light Manager might be a viable alternative for you if LF doesn't play nice for you. Works great without any lag issues :good:

Well, that's not exactly the news I wanted to hear lol.. I've tried light manager before and didn't like it at all. Light flow is kind of a crucial app for me. I guess I will just charge the device in the off state. Everything works fine until it gets charged overnight.
Now that you've sort-of confirmed light flow as the cause, I wonder if it might have to do with the charge state hooking. Do you have charging/charged profiles set up in light flow? If it's as simple as removing those, I could deal. I'm at work so can't really afford to test it right now.

I first endured the slowness and made a LF backup. Then 1) I cleared the data and rebooted the phone without launching LF, the phone restarted normally, calendar widget was fine, 2) launched LF and granted notification access, restarted phone, all was well, 3) restored from LF backup, restarted, all is still well and LF launches fine. Corrupted data?
At least I'll know what to do next time. For your similar issue, just make a LF backup, clear data, reboot, restore, and hopefully it resolves the issue for you. Let me know.
Edit: Regarding your question on charge state hooking--I had LF running for many years and on the Pixel 2 XL since new. The problem only surfaced recently. My Pixel 2 is also fine. I would guess that there was bad data somewhere. Like I wrote above, a reset/restore brought everything back as before.

Yeah, I went through all of that last week. I went from the newest version back to the last known stable (for me) version. I always keep a back up of the settings txt file as well as a TiBu file. My current version (previous stable) was installed from scratch.
Everything was fine for the first two or so weeks on March build. This just started after I applied the libs from the multi-touch fix. I removed that as I had hoped it would be related to the phantom swiping when scrolling (I don't game on the device) but it doesn't seem to be related the swiping. At first I thought that module was causing the issue as it started the day or two after adding it. That's the only change I have really made since setting up the March build. Not sure why it would just start out of the blue when it had been working fine for at least 2 weeks before.
I'll try some things over the next few days. First thing is going to be removing the charging profiles from light flow and see if that makes a difference.
Have you tried hooking up the charger since cleaning your data?
If removing charging profiles doesn't help, I'm going to reflash March build (removing -w from batch file) to both slots, redo twrp, elx kernel, magisk. I may do this anyway, even if removing charging from light flow fixes it.

I have connected/disconnected a generic charger twice and once connected to a PC (slow charge). So far, still all good. The problem began in late/mid March. The April patch did not solve the problem. I am using Magisk. Stock/ElementalX made no difference. I will see if the problem resurfaces.
The likely cause that there are code issues with LF. I had LF slow down regardless of charger connection so I'm curious to know if removing the charging hooks help. I'm on the latest version.
Just curious--what not go to the April patch?

I'm an "if it ain't broke" kinda guy. Everything except the phantom swipes has been perfect on March build. At this point I'm convinced the swiping issue is due to LG and therefore nothing to be done about it. I'm getting too old to flash a new ROM every week like I used to

Gotcha! Since my last post, I have connected/disconnected charger five times. Each time with several minutes of wait time in between. I have also tested functionality while the charger is plugged in. All still good.
One side note, I have noticed, with many phones, that strange and undesirable things happen when you connect the charge while the phone is mid-boot. In my situation, the LF problem may have surfaced because of that.

Well for me I was just charging normally. Hope it holds up for you. If so I'll do a clean install again and setup from scratch.
Try clearing excess text messages and cache for apps. A friend of mine had thousands of text messages and social media buildup, and the phone got very slow and buggy, especially the camera app. After deleting thousands of texts, switching to Textra, clearing the app cache for frequently used apps, the phone is back to very fast again.
