Ok guys, sorry for the nubby questions lately, so I figured I would get them all out there while I could.
#1) If I backup a ROM's DATA partition only, does that mean I can restore the DATA in an upgraded version of the ROM?
#2) Can I store my backups on a flash drive, without corrupting them? If so, can I use USBHOST to restore from those backups?
#3) When flashing to another recovery, such as CWM to TWRP, can I just flash the zip file in recovery?
That's all I can think of as of yet, I'm sure I will update this thread in the future.

#1 I think yes. #2 Don't know. #3 Yes you can directly flash zips to switch recovery.

Hey all,
Is there anyway to get a version of cwm that can:
A) backup and restore nandroids on ics safely, ie, backup cm9, and restore a backup of fc15.
B) safely do all of this without bricking.
If not, do you guys think this ice, cwm, and bricking will ever be fixed? Thanks in advance!.
P.s., tired of having to Odin back to el29 to flash new roms from ics...........
Thanks!

I use mobile Odin for replacing stock kernels with repacks then use ROM manager to boot into cwm recovery and flash away. Never wipe data in cwm or use reset as partitions changed. Calks format all

Hi, maybe a stupid question.. If I update my phone to 4.2 and then I want to come back, is restoring a CWM backup after a full wipe enough? Or do I need to flash a Google image from scratch?
Thank you for your time.

Are you on the latest version of CWM? The reason I ask is because the earlier versions are incompatible with Android 4.2.
Anyways, you should be able to restore a nandroid backup of 4.1.2 (or earlier version) after wiping your system/data/cache.

I recommend that you switch from CWM to the latest TWRP because when I upgraded to 4.2 with CWM I faced the sdcard/0/ issue so CWM could no longer find the nandroid backup to restore it. I have no idea if this has been fixed in CWM but it is working fine in the latest TWRP recovery which I am using now.
Take note that CWM backup is not compatible with TWRP backup so you have to make a TWRP backup to restore it later.
If you would like to have TWRP then you have to do the following assuming you are already rooted:
1- Download GooManager from the Play Store
2- Open it then install the TWRP recovery
3- Switch off the phone then go into TWRP recovery
4- Make a backup using TWRP
5- Do whatever you want now but remember that if you are wiping everything then you will have to install TWRP recovery again (either via fastboot or by rooting then downloading GooManager to install it) after starting the new ROM in order to restore your nandroid backup because wiping everything will wipe the recovery as well.
I hope that is clear
Hello all Im having a bit of trouble understanding a bit of the lingo here.
is making a recovery simply a backup? everytime I read about backups its just to help them install a custom rom.
I would like to make a back-up [if that's all it is] but I dont want a custom rom I just want a simple back-up,
I have rooted my phone via "FireChain's CF-Auto Root" method. Whats the most reliable way to back up?
can I not simply re-root my phone instead as backing up? or reset it?
Thanks for any help.:good:

You're next step will be to install a custom recovery like CWM and you can get it from the market one you've downloaded the you will open the app and follow the prompts to flash the recovery after that's done then you can backup your rom

ClockworkMod is a custom recovery.
You install it with Rom Manager. Then you can make a backup directly in clockwork or using the Rom Manager menu

is it the CWM backup manager? or something else?
there I only have 2 options either to pull or push backups both of which I have no idea what they do.
Do you have Rom manager installed?

What you have is just the app to help you manage backup and restore in CWM recovery, it does nothing as far as making a backup. You will need a custom recovery in place your stock recovery.
A nandroid backup take a "snapshot" of your current ROM and data.
When you restore it, it will restore your phone exactly to the point when you made the nand backup.
There's a few ways to install a custom recovery.
-Through ROM manager (CWM).
-Through Goo Manager (TWRP).
-Using Odin to flash a recovery.
-Flash a new reocvery with an existing custom recovery.
Easiest thing right now if you already have ROM manager is to use that to flash CWM recovery.
Boot into recovery to do nandroid backup or use ROM manager.
The other backup is apps and/or data backup with Titanium Backup or similar.
This tyoe of backup save a copy of your current app plus the data that is associated with that app.

I don't really know of any links but a few questions for you. I can link you to some threads once you answer these questions
1-Are you rooted?
2-What recovery do you want to use? Official CWM, TWRP. or Philz touch version of CWM?
3-Do you have Odin set up and working?
1-Are you rooted?
Yes
2-What recovery do you want to use? Official CWM, TWRP. or Philz touch version of CWM?
Im not sure which, but I just want one that is most reliable if all are equal then the simplest one will do
I will take your word on it :cyclops:
3-Do you have Odin set up and working?
yes I do version 3.07
sry for the late response

-The easiest way is to flash CWM with ROM manager.
1. Download ROM Manager if you haven't
2, Open ROM Manager app
3. Chose the option to install Recovery (Maybe "Recovery Setup" or something like that)
4. Let it do it's thing
5. You should now have CWM recovery if all went correctly
-You could also use Odin to flash a recovery such as
Philz Touch CWM version

What do you mean by mistake? If you want to do a nandroid backup you need a custom recovery. The custom recovery doesn't affect how your ROM work and can do what your stock recvoery does plus more.
Anyhow if you want to go back to stock recovery you'll need to Odin back to stock and re-root your phone.
You can get the stock tar file here to use with ODIN here.

So all I have to do is root my phone again and itll get rid of my CWM and go back to normal?
im not sure what the feature is called but its when you hover your finger over the display and it shows more options
when I did that and booted into recovery it started going crazy for some reason, now it wiggles without me touching it
or even having my hant anywhere near it.

No you'll have to flash the stock ROM using ODIN. That will get rid of CWM and you'll have a stock recovery. After that is done you can root your phone again.
Have you tried just clearing cache and dalvik cache in recovery to solve the problem you're having with the "wiggle" thing?
I will try that right now
is there a specific tutorial I have to follow to go back to stock? I used chainfire's way to root my phone.

okay I have unrooted my phone :]
question though; when I backed up my s4 with rom manager I did not erase the backup
it there anyway to access that path somehow so that I may erase it?

Just use a file manager and go to the CWM folder and delete the backup, you could delete the CWM folder itself if you have no plan of using it again.
Hi all,
So I've gotten myself into a bootloop by messing with permissions/ownership in the /data/ directory. I would like to recover by losing as little data/settings as possible (I only rooted with chainfire AutoRoot anyway, so stock, rooted, ROM).
1) I have a few months-old TWRP backup, is it possible to extract what I need from this?
2) If not, what rom is my best bet to flash to recover a stock, rooted ROM, with my old data? I tried re-flashing CF-AutoRoot, but it didn't do anything...
Thanks for any help
Well first things first.
1. Did you install a custom ROM?
2.or backup your rooted stock?
3. Did you already do a full wipe
(Data/factory reset)
4. If you didn't do step 3 but you did step 1...I would advise a dirty flash of the custom ROM that you had
4. If only step two is applicable I only see two possible routes
4.1a. Use Odin to update twrp or download a new custom stock ROM and flash that so you can boot...then try and update twrp to the newest version and then try to flash your backup to see if it was a version problem
OR
4.1b. Start from scratch but I would advise using cwm from now on. twrp to my knowledge isn't updated as frequently as cwm
Hope that helps. Feel free to pm

Hi! Thanks for the reply!
I have not done a data wipe, and I would like not to...
I used CF-AutoRoot, I'm not 100% sure if this counts as flashing a custom ROM or not, it's supposed to keep stock ROM but give you SU. I have tried repeating CF-AutoRoot again, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem...
The only backup I have is of the full phone image, which I don't want to restore since it is months old and I would lose data... Is there a way to only restore selected files from the backup? So far I have restored CWM and can access an adb shell...
Thanks
OK so basically as far as I know you are Sol on your original rom ....that's why I always flash a custom ROM but the data stored should still be on your internal (pictures, videos, things of that nature). your app data and accounts however is not...for example games and such...I would advise titanium backup and do a backup of all your app data at least once a week from now on
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk
Agreed ...you are going to lose data in this case ...as you will need a restore of your old backup ..or fresh install of a new rom ...
Backups are king when playing with device roms and recoveries etcetera ..g

Hey everyone, I've recently backed up my stock rooted 4.4.2 TW rom (OTA) so I could flash a custom rom to check out some of the other KitKat development going on.
After fullfilling my curiosity, I wanted to restore my most recent TWRP backup, but after going through all the motions, TWRP says "restore successful in 536 seconds" which seems a little fast for a TW backup/restore. I restart the system, and my phone was stuck on the Galaxy S4 flash screen. Desperate, I then rebooted into TWRP to do a factory reset, but after trying to boot into the system after that, same results.
I have a feeling this is because I have the recent NB4 bootloader (Knox is tripped) and my backups are stored on my external SDcard.
If anyone knows any fixes for this issue, I would appreciate any input. I did search the web for any threads with anyone who is experiencing the same issue as me, but I don't think anyone was dumb enough to download the OTA, then root their phone.
I am also willing to reflash the stock firmware (4.4.2 OTA) from SamMobile website via mobile Odin. However, I'm not sure if this is a risky method to get back to stock 4.4.2.
Thanks in advance.

I would also like to mention that I have two backups, one was April 1st, and the other one was April 3rd. They both are backups of the same stock ROM, and they both won't restore in TWRP.
In ES File explorer, I can see that both backups are taking up about 4 GBs of storage, so I know the data is there.
Thanks again...

Just had the same problem with mine, There was something wrong with the TWRP 2.7.0.0 recovery. I could not flash any back-up I previously made, or get it to install any zip files either.
How I got around it...go to TWRP website and get the latest Odin flashable version 2.7.0.1 (Tar file) and flash it that way. From there I was able to get into recovery and my previous back-ups flashed properly.
Best of luck to you, TWRP recovery updates can be hit or miss at times (various versions). This is not the first time I have had issues from trying to update TWRP (especially when doing it VIA goo-manager... updating by Odin seems to be the better option from my experiences)

Will Philz Touch CWM be able to restore a TWRP backup? I just tried TWRP 2.6.3.0, and it still didn't work.
If I were you I would try 2.6.3.1, if that doesn't work, try 2.5.0.2. For future backups, (not sure if you do this or if others do this, but I do) restore the backup you just made, so you can be 100% sure it restores correctly.
I also had problems just like that and I would point you here to see the discussion and solution.
