Top Speaker Distortion - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Just today I started playing some music and noticed and awful crackling/popping distortion coming from the top speaker at higher volumes. Not loud volumes, but higher volumes. I flashed to sense and CM but it is not a ROM issue. This just started today or yesterday, since it wasn't there 2 days ago.
I am about a 2 weeks over my 14-day return period, and I REALLY don't want a refurb (knowing VZW's awful history of terrible refurbs).
What should I do? :crying:

Bump.

Try a frequency generator app and find the frequency that you hear the issue. I believe that some of the frequency generator apps have left and right balance, which should let you isolate the bad side so it is easier to hear the problem. At least this way it should be obvious whether you have a damaged speaker.
You might be boned, but I have had good units from square trade. Asurion was hit and miss. They actually sent me fouled up units as well as brand new units in box with all accessories with the Rezound.

But what if I have a contract with VZW?
And the frequency generator app makes it MUCH more noticeable.

You can get Squaretrade or Asurion insurance added to your device.
Verizon probably won't want to issue you a new device. Asurion and Squaretrade will likely issue you a CLN if you do it through insurance. But this speaker issue is probably a manufacturer defect so it should be replaced under warranty, so you shouldn't need insurance on it for this issue. I don't know of a way to get a new device via warranty or insurance, unless they run out of CLN devices. I believe that is what happened with the Rezound-- I think there were so many insurance claims because many of them were defective, so they ran out and had to ship new units instead.

If you can do without for a short period you could send to HTC for repair .. Since s-off/s-on is a pretty easy switch should be no big deal if you can do without or use an old phone

Well, I am going to see if the VZW reps will give me a new one today. It's worth a shot.
I need to make sure I have swapped before 4.3 hits in case it patches the exploit.

Shouldn't make a difference. Isn't the phone designed to run with the beats EQ?
But anyway, I have tried on stock and CM and it is definitely a hardware issue.

That sucks hopefully you can get a bn one

If its cracking its blown. You can try HTC but they will most likely say user damage. Hope you can get it replaced. Did you install one of sound enhancements that's on here?

I emailed HTC and got a reply withing the hour. They asked if I had done a factory reset, asked for IMEI, and such.
I replied to them with the info and they haven't emailed me since.

This happened to me on CM. And I had just finished posting on here that I was having ZERO problems with CM.
Anyway, I restored my bonestock backup and the crackling has gone away. Not sure why CM would make that happen.

Perhaps because CM doesn't quite have the right kernel settings to handle the more powerful speakers and dedicated amp.

I had noticed upon flashing CM that the audio sounded piss poor. Could be a preset that needs to be tuned.

Well, switching back to sense and playing anything still has the issue, so it is a hardware problem for me.

Just an update on this.
Sent my phone out today, we will see how fast HTC repairs it.

Update to this thread;
Got my phone back from HTC today! Speakers sound great like they are new!

Nice turn around!

I even got a free HTC cleaning cloth in the box. I'll post pictures in a bit.

Callers say phone sounds like im in a tunnel

I just got two:
Samsung Galaxy S II - Titanium from T-mobile (SGH-T989)
Not rooted, etc...But stock, as they come from t-mobile.
Voice quality is pretty bad on those two units. I can hear the other party muffed. I thought they are on speakerphone or talking thru a headset. Then the person with the other S G II noticed the same issue. I am having hard time understanding the other party in every call. I really got to focus on the conversation
Low voice volume when rocker is on max. It is hard to hear people in street noisy environment.
I talked to T-mo rep and they said that probably the phone is like this, and suggested to go to t-mo store and try one of their units. I wonder if it's the entire batch or the phones are like this.
I am coming from Google Nexus One. I wonder if Ice Cream will solve this issue or cyanogen mod 9. Is it hardware or software issue? Anyone else with similar thoughts?
Honestly, coming from a Sensation, this phone has incredible sound quality and speaker volume.
I think you should warranty both handsets.
I came from the MyTouch 4G... And the SGS2 has such better sound quality than I had with my MyTouch, and I liked the MyTouch... I think you got a bad phone... Two bad phones, if that's possible... Haha
I have the same problem. Sounds like crap. I returned my first one after about 2 days. Got another one and it worked fine for a month or so, yhen the same thing happened. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do now. I can't Stand it.

Yeah i have notice as well
i've been using it for 2+ month now, it's loud and clear
you guys must have got some duds
the other day another user asked me about the Mic, and after using compressed air to clear it out, is fine now
if you put the phone in your pants or jacket pockets often it might be stuffed

Thank you for your input.
I have no problem with my mic. The other party has no problem either, since I talk to different people, and I still have the same result. I have problem with the speaker, or the sound chip. The phones are brand new so no lint/dust in the speaker, or the mic.
I think Samsung does some changes with every different batch. This one is probably just like this. Nothing can be done. The series I am talking is: Samsung Galaxy S II – Titanium for T-Mobile, manufactured in December 2011 (no headphones in the box).
I am sure a lot of other SG2 s are fine.
The volume is on max, when I call someone (before the other party answers) ringing in the speaker is not clear or crisp, since the volume is on max.
I talked to Samsung today 12/21 and they have not hear of the issue. I talked to t-mobile on 12/20 and they have no solution either.
I guess it’s going on craigslist. Probably this will be normal voice quality for other users, and I will downgrade to Nexus S (hardware wise) until some other nexus appears at the end of the next year.

That's what it is. Talk on my phone you'll clearly see the difference. My old Sensation had horrible call quality until I ran the volume + app but then my battery started dying quickly
So I got rid of it & haven't looked back since.
This is someone coming from an unlocked iphone 4 in white (best call quality besides the Galaxy S2)
My GS2 is so clear and loud I never have to worry about hearing other callers no matter where I am. Take both phones back and have the reps at the store exchange them for you.
If they give you grief, have them make calls from your 2 handsets. Make sure they grab a demo phone to compare yours to
same
I have the same exact issue. Just got my phone a few days ago, enjoying Pandora in the car with the AUX input jack...
A call comes in, I answer, and I can't heard a damn thing! I make sure the In Call volume is set to max, still can barely hear the caller. I turn up my stereo...finish the call...then BAM! Pandora is blasting my ears off!
Incredibly frustrating!
sharko, wondering if you were able to get this resolved via exchange...?

[Q] Getting Google Nexus phone for family member - any issues I need to be aware of?

Just a background info: I have a young family member that needs phone and I have bought her at first a "cheap" Android phone from Virgin Mobile and that was a disaster (slow, froze all the time, etc.). I replaced that with a supposedly powerful phone - Virgin Mobile Motorola Triumph. That is another disaster, as the phone was launched half-baked. If you Google this phone, there are issues from the phone ringing only once to running out of storage because the phone keep generating large alogxx files.
Anyways, she is getting tired with these issues (and so am I!!) and I want to get her a pure Google phone - the Nexus. But before I jump in and buy this, is there any issues with this phone that I need to be aware of? Keep in mind the issues I mentioned above, which made the using an Android phone really painful for her.
Thanks!
Pure Google =No Issues. It's kind of understood around here, not that I expect everyone who posts here to know that.
I would venture to say it's as good as it gets, the Galaxy S III has better specs, but a few issues and hey, you can't beat Pure Google, we'll be first to Android 4.2, whatever it's called.

Any issue on the hardware side that I need to be aware of?
nah, just don't go anal on the screen.
AMOLED screens get burn in from images that don't change over long periods of time (nav bar), but that's... eh no big deal otherwise Samsung wouldn't use AMOLED, also found in S III BTW...
You'll see a lot of threads about weird charging behavior, that's this phone's main issue. Every phone has its issues and this one is rather menial, not like a power button that tends to break...
I haven't updated my profile for the new GalNex....

The screen is an issue look at the sticky on the top of the Q&A section.
After updating to JB, the sound is ridiculously low. Volume+ is the solution for ICS but not working on JB. That is the main issue of this phone.
Don't want to put you off but I have had issues with the hardware. The USB port is dodgy and known to fail, with lots of strange charging behavior as already mentioned in this thread. Also they are prone to dieing and you have to plug it into a USB port with no battery to revive it. Maybe I was unlucky with early versions, or have they still not fixed it?

Not us...people who want to get one, they should hold off. It cant be worse than the current one...that would suck. (not saying its a bad phone...just saying that they new one shouldn't be worse than the old one) :fingers-crossed:
Aside from the screen burn-ins and discoloration in low brightness, the phone is actually fantastic.
Even the relatively outdated 5MP camera is actually pretty good. Although it has less MP, the quality of the sensor is actually great.
Also, just give your daughter the pure Google experience. It's almost flawless in terms of software (IMO), so it'll be a welcome change from her previous two phones. Just treat her well with the G'nex before she gets iPoisoned and we lose another poor soul to the dark side:crying:

EXACTLY!! She has been eyeing the iPhone 5!
But honestly, she was getting tired with the Android "experience", especially with the last 2 phones. The Motorola Triumph was $299 and it was piece of crap! This gives Android a bad name. This 3rd phone, the Nexus, HAVE to be the right one... seeing it's Google who sells them, not Virgin Mobile or some other carrier.

Uh oh... not nit-picking here but its must be pretty bad that flashing a custom ROM is needed to increase the volume size... Hmmm.. I wish the Nexus is sold in a retail store so I can try it out! I believe Google charges 15% restocking fee for returning a phone?
One person complains about volume, no need to call off the bets.
I admit I have to turn it up more than my Thunderbolt, but it's always loud enough without closing in on the right side of the volume bar.

Need help making a decision...

Hey everyone.
Need personal opinions as I cannot decide for myself -.-
Recently got a warranty replacement device from T-Mobile.
It's a refurb.. -.-
My old one had a weird smudge in all camera apps as well as in the picture. Really annoying.
Well I got my refurb, it's got it's issues, 3 "ink" spots on the screen, my original had zero! I cannot undervolt by more than 25mA. My original could under volt by 150 across the board. The refurb gets very hot (approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with normal use) my original hardly ever broke 90. And my battery life is freaking **** with this new device. (I'm guessing heat is the issue here)
I'm really ****ing upset. Excuse my language..
The decision I cannot make is this.
Do I request T-Mobile to ship my original device back to me(it's still in transit just dropped it off today), and either 1 deal with the camera smudge, or 2 take apart both devices and swap the camera modules?
I looked all over YouTube, I cannot find anyone saying there is a warranty sticker covering any screws.
Does anyone know if they can tell if the device was disassembled? I have professional tools so I won't leave markings behind.
Simply put, I hate this "new" device.
I don't understand why companies give refurbished devices for warranty when I am paying full price for a brand new device that should last at least a year. It's not my fault something happened that was out of my control..
Thanks for putting up with my rant lol.

Wow, that's though. I send in my Device to samsung for a fix, and they fixed it with a "replaced PBA" comment, but I saw some people say they just send another one. Hopefully it's not a refurbished. I doubt they will be able to cancel the shipping, but if they an, most definitely swap the camera modules. Having those problems on the refurbished sucks. I could have fixed mine but I sent it in hoping Id get another one which didn't die after 2.5Hrs screen on time and 12 hours running time. Switch out the cameras if possible. I myself, if I get a bad one on saturday, I'll hate my descision but Im going to go for the 16GB nexus 4. Hate the limited storage and the on screen buttons that get in the way, but heck I'm not going to live 2 years with a faulty device

I can understand your frustration With my experience working foe Tmobile and having done countless warranty exchanges since the my touch, they will not return your original device. Unless you cannsomehowncontact ups and have them stop transit and send it back and return the one they sent you. You should contact tkobile again and tell them what happened. Afaik they will not return it back to you. When it gets to their processing center it'll get factory reset, processed and possibly put back up as a refurb if it passes all their tests. You do have the option of requesting another warranty exchange, possibly going to retention this time or a higher tier of tech support.

I'd do that too. With the sgs2 I went through five warranty exchanges. They wouldn't offer me anything else because apparently it was the best phone they had even though they had the presale of the sgs3 going on when this happened. That's what drove me to sell it and buy a gnex. Long story short in back here.

I'm getting my htc one replaced for the purple-tint camera issue (which, btw, both verizon and htc acknowledge for hardware repair/replacement). iI can either 1) have htc repair my phone, but i have to send it in and go without it for a couple of weeks, or b) i can get it replaced by verizon, but will almost certainly get a certified like-new, which is fine as long as its 'like new'.
thoughts/opinions/experiences?
i'll let y'all know if the camera issue is fixed

I've had a mixed bag in regards to this. One swap of a Razr arrived with chips out of the display and scratches on the casing. The next swap after that was fine. I had an iphone 4 that I had to have swapped bc it had a bad charge port and the iphone I received had a non-functional display. Keep in mind this was years ago and they could have remedied those issues by now (so don't freak out lol). Just relaying my experiences.
If you go the Verizon route I'd like to see what the exchanged device you receive is like as far as condition goes. My One has the issue as well but I can't send it in to HTC and be without it for 2 weeks. If you get a decent device I might roll the dice with Verizon replacement again.
I have had two replacements, both were perfect condition and the batteries were like brand new. Neither had camera issues. Not a single problem so far.

its a serious brawl between the impatient and the paranoid sides of my psyche lol. so the vzw dude said they can send a replacement, after which i have 5 days to send my device or send the refurb back. so i figure i'll test out the CLN, if its no good i'll send my phone to htc.
i'll definitely let you know how it goes.

damn that's messed up. you should be able to get another replacement though right?
On this issue I can tell you first hand. I worked as a Service Tech back in Eris days and 90% of their stock was refurbished through a company who did horrible work. Every customer I dealt with came back numerous time before finding a reliable device. Now to say with HTC One most likely you will get a used like new device. They haven't had enough returns to refurbish at this point. Their knowledge of the device is zero..zero!! I would definitely grab it up while you can.

:fingers-crossed: hope you're right. the only other consideration being that it has a non-defect camera/sensor
OP if you have the ability to send the phone to HTC i would. Ive had nothing but problems with VZW CLN program. I went through 3 HTC rezounds. First was DOA, second the headphone jack wouldn't work, third the screen wasn't glued to the LCD letting dust in.
i ended up going to insurance and have them get me a new phone, at the time all they had was an Inc 4g LTE so i said SOLD. Never again will i deal with VZW repairs.
just my $.02

Yeah I hated to let the cat out of the bag..they made me sign a waiver years ago to not let their TRADE secrets out..lol
that's how a big company rolls dude..most of the time I had to fix the refurbs to give to customers because they did a sad job. Did they test the device._ _ _ no. C'mon I had a dude escalate because of this and a coworker had to call the police.
Well it seems more ppl than not have had bad experiences with vzw swaps. Hopefully you luck out OP

To clarify cornjo, are you saying you think I'll have better or worse luck than when you were working for vz tech?

You'll have better luck not dealing with the store grab the certified replacement it's probably a device they used to test with because not many HTC One's have been returned..shows how good the device is bro.

jeez wtf! you'd think someone would notice before they put it in the box. its practically comical at this point. i'm having a hard time believing the replacement system can be THIS bad. If anything i'm hoping the phone they send me is ludicrously inadequate so i can demand a brand new one.
I thought it was hilarious I emailed them a pic they overnighted me a new one before I sent the useless one back

Don't get me started...CLNR phones are a horrible gamble..I think I'm on my 7th/8th Rezound (back to back returns). Loose screens, overheating, defective cameras, etc). I don't like being toyed with. I did tons of research, found out that they were outsourcing the repairs to some cheap company (something like "PCM"?). They kept trying to give me a new lower spec phone for a while too and I had them on file lying to me about sending me a new Rezound TWICE. Finally escalated the sh*t out of the issue and found the "president" of the So Cal headquarters. So...yeah, be careful.
tl;dr
The more you know about Verizon the worse it gets.

lol uhhhh... Wasn't a camera standard on the Nexus? How the hell?
Verizon is comprised of a bunch of douchebags
I have minor backlight bleed from the home button but everything else is flawless (I'm trying to overcome my OCD and keep it LOL). But on topic Verizon CLNR's are beyond ass.

Warranty replace through HTC or Verizon?

Hello. My One's battery is crapping out, goes down to 30% then turns off. Sometimes it makes it down to the teens before turning off. Called HTC, they will replace it overnight for $29. Verizon will also replace it for a little less. Any opinion on who to go with for replacement? I'll probably be getting a refurbished with either company, just wondering which one is better to work with, especially if the replacement has issues.
Thanks.

my track record with VZW CLN program isnt good. I had to replace my Rezound about 5 times before i decided to "loose" the phone and go insurance.
i was never given the option to go with HTC. From what i had to go through with VZW i would say try HTC.

I've had to have 2 M7 Verizons fixed: one for bonehead damage to SIM slot and other for power button.
Both were handled by HTC, and both came back perfect. Since the Verizon method has been reported to
be such a crap-shoot, maybe you'll have the same perfect experience that I've ended up with using HTC.
866-449-8358 is the number in US.‎
I got mine replaced by Verizon and I'm really happy -- the phone they sent me looks perfect and works perfectly too. Honestly, I hate Verizon customer service, but this time around I decided to use their live chat feature instead of calling them and the guy who helped me was generous as hell. He knew his phones and wasn't just reading out of a book. Within 5 minutes my order was placed for a free replacement.
Plus, the turn-around is amazing. They'll send you your new phone within two days, and you don't have to send your old one before they ship it out, so you're never left phoneless.
I'd say give it a shot.
I suggest whichever is cheaper. If you are getting a refurbished unit from either company, chances are equal on it's quality. Verizon gets their phone from HTC, so it is the same refurb.
I have had to CLN twice from Verizon and had no issues with the service itself. They send you the phone and a return slip to send the old phone back. I have heard HTC needs a credit card to do that service. Verizon doesn't as you have phone service with them and they can just charge your account with the bill if you don't send the phone to them.

Pretty sure HTC's $29 option is a brand new phone. That's how it was with mine, anyway.
Sent it in for repair because it was bootlooping and couldn't get in bootloader. Got it back a few days later...but the wifi was absolute crap. Couldn't even pick up my router being in the same room, let alone anybody else's in the apartment I was in. Couldn't even connect to my tether on my other phone. Got back on the online chat, and told 'em what was going on. Had me try a few things (that I had already tried), and they offered to fix it for $10, or replace it with a new unit for $30. I didn't wanna mess with it anymore, so picked the new option... sent it in, they checked the phone out, then sent a new one my way. Don't think it was a refurb b/c it still had Sense 5.5 / rumrunner S-Off-able HBoot.

I've had no issues with VZW warranty replacements, overnight shipped and free, plus you don't have to go without a phone while waitingon the replacement. ......but if you have a phone to use in meantime, if HTC will give you a new unit for 29 bucks.........IDK which I would do. Because many of the "new" htc m7's still have the crappy camera, so you might be sending in that new phone for a refurb or repair in a month or two anyways......and the refurbs seems to all be coming with the newer model camera chip. So, crap shoot either way. I think I'd stick with free overnight replacement, and the better chance of a good camera. ......and you can get s-off on any of the VZW bootloaders now, so it does not matter what firmware it comes loaded with.
Thank you everyone for your advice. Yesterday I ended up going with HTC and got my replacement today. It was $29, which covered next day shipping to me and a three day return label for my old phone which I have 10 days to send back to them.
Verizon would definitely have been cheaper but it was very easy and painless to get it replaced through HTC. Verizon wanted to troubleshoot the problem first, including doing a factory reset, recharge the phone and see if the problem went away. I'm leaving town in the morning and needed the new phone fast. HTC just asked a few questions and approved the replacement.
The phone they sent me looks perfect and works great but was already updated so not likely new but refurbished. I plan on running it stock/S-on for a few days to make sure it has no problems before giving it a little Sunshine.
Thanks again.

I read somewhere ov branded was supposed to be higher quality control than the original company HTC outsourced to. Below is what my sensor file says and I have had no purple tint issues thus far though... But to answer your question, my sensor company was the first HTC sourced to and ov was sought after when they couldn't supply the demand from HTC. So, yes, yours is the newer one.

Check your serial number. Like mine starts with FA3BJ the first two digits is the plant the phone was made. The third digit is year, 3 being 2013. 4th digit is month, B being November (1-9 being corresponding month, a= Oct b= Nov and c= Dec). And J being the day. 1-9 then alphabet going up. If yours was made after Dec 2013 it should have been made with ov being a new unit. Made before it would be half ov half st. Yours still may have been a new unit. There is a thread in the international m7 going into further details on this. Verizon m7s came so late in the game, our phones started out being half ov half st before HTC went to 100% ov in Dec 2013.
