I've been looking to see if there was a front loading camera, using the usb connection. It seems logical, that an add on camera to the Captivate, exists. And using it to film, on a usb wired connection, makes sense. However, I must not be able to correctly identify what I'm looking for. So far, a cheap, small wireless security camera, is the best I've found at Amazon. Does anyone know of a product that exists, that would be an add on, to let you communicate with others, face to face, from the front of the Captivate? I love the camera, it's just not too handy, not having a front facing camera. Thanks.
The captivate doesn't support being used as a usb host, and there is no phone addon cameras, I've looked. But google "one more face"...looks promising if some one would buy the"project"

The processor natively supports USB OTG (On the go). OTG is a relatively new standard and not too many people have test equipment for it, much less devices.... to my knowledge there is nothing available now. However, there may be something soon.
Don't you need a new jig to enable usb otg?

It really depends on how you hold it.... or what you call the front.

No. You need a jig to hack otg. You short pins 4&5. That says to the phone, "this is an otg device". OTG is a usb standard for mobile devices to communicate with other mobile devices... camera to phone, or phone to thumb drive.
oh so the usb device would have to be otg compatible.. right?
when the cappy came out i thought it would be cool to make a ffc with a flash on the backside but noone had the knowledge to figure out how to do it. now im looking at getting another phone, not that i need one but i want to give the cappy to my brother.
adam you are just full of knowledge aren't you? well i hope a mobile usb camera becomes a reality even if i wont need it.
I just got to thinking about the USB port and cameras. I realized that it should be possible to rig a flash by using a 619kohm resistor across pins 4 and 5 on the USB port, and an LED between tx and ground, then sending 0xFF repeatedly to the /dev/ttyACM0 ( you have to mknod that device and reboot for it to work). Just thought I'd share that. I know it's a bit off topic, but hey.. it would be a cool addition to the camera.

an alternative to the usb camera would be a bluetooth camera. they make heasets with cameras so you can record what you see, im sure a product exists where you could fabricate a clip for the phone and communicate over bluetooth.

i actually was thinking of that one stoney night, googling around looking for just a flash, it wouldnt be hard to rig up, the hardest part would be getting the timing down, unless its used as a "back light" rather than a flash.
but you would be the guy to do it,
We need more Cameras!
I too would love to see someone rig up a flash or a camera for the usb! it seeme illogical to me that mobile devices dont have more use for micro usb ports, seems easy to imagine a whole host of different attachment devices.

I guess when you search for things, sometimes you find a 'maybe'. Looking on Amazon for some type of add on camera, to make up for the non front, I found this. It's called
'Mini Wireless Color Camera with Microphone', and sells for $31.35, and acts somewhat like a security camera, but it's small, wireless, have 150 foot range, built in mike, and has full color full motion, and a few other things as well. It says can be used for presentations and interviews. That said, isn't a front facing camera, used for that purpose, as well? I have an expensive network security camera, that I use to protect my belongings, and in truth, I can monitor it very well, from my Captivate. So, if this little fellow I found half way works, set it near by, and when you feel like chatting face to face, go at it. No need to hold your cell phone up, to do it with. Without trying it, it's hard to know the quality resolution you'd have, but for less than $32.00? Might be worth a shot. It's on Amazon, made by Generic, if anyone wants to look at it.

you say wireless, is it wifi? bluetooth? or radio frequency? if it is wifi or bluetooth we might have something.
The camera I was speaking of, is found here, along with others
http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Wireless...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1305632158&sr=1-1
and it's the first choice, which I noticed was about $1.50 less, than I noticed it was. It comes with what is mentioned, and the third, for a little over $50, has more to it, than the cheaper one. Basically, these are security camera systems, but are so small, could fit into the front camera strategy, for those like us, that bought a great smart phone, that WAS BUILT DUMB, without a front facing camera. Devices like these, open areas that might benefit us, if we think on it.
That camera is not designed to hook up to anything besides it's base station. The base station provides an incompatible A/V output. You'd have more luck with a webcam.
I'm designing a dock for the N7v2 for use in a car. It will have Qi wireless charging and Bluetooth audio receiver, with a standard 3.5mm audio output. It should be compatible with most cases.
I am also currently designing a mounting method that should be close to universal between different cars, and should not fall off like most other docks in the market.
I designed one for the N7v1 using the Pogo pins, and I can never go back to not having a dock for my tablet in my car. It's amazing the difference it made for me.
I want to know a couple things. Please reply with the following template:
1. Would you want a dock like this?
2. How much do you expect to pay for it?
Thank you everyone, in advance!

Sounds like a great idea. Do you have any links showing your work with N7v1? Heck, I may be interested in that version since the v1 tablet can be had for cheap these days and is more than capable for the limited functions needed in a car. At any rate:
1. yes, would be interested
2. no idea what a fair price would be, but $50-$100 seems like a fair ballpark
I would think very carefully why you need a wireless charger in a car.
Heat kills batteries; tablets in cars get hot. Why add heat to your woes?
The tablet is likely to be busy playing music and navigating, often in full sunlight. Why add to the heating problems by using a wireless charger when a 5v cord charger attached to the car supply will do the trick?
The wireless car mount/charger iterations for the Nexus 4 were a failure, I recall.

Well, that's why I don't leave the tablet in the car, I keep it with me. While I'm in the car, if it's hot out I will have the A/C on anyways, so heat has not been an issue.
Most of my broken devices are dead because the USB port broke because of wear and tear. One of the points of this dock is to reduce that. Plugging in a device everytime I get in the car is partly to blame for such failures. I would have used Pogo Pins, like with the first Nexus 7, but they don't exist on the second.

I honestly have no idea what i am looking to read and study up on so if you have any ideas than please let me know so i can educate myself. I end goal is to be a program developer.
Also i have an amazing ideas of a great new app. I have the layouts for the app but don't have the knowledge to build the app myself. If you are interested in learning more about my idea and possibly collaberate pleae let me know and we can possibly exchange numbers.
Another thing, i am an inventor and creator.

Look at active Brodit car mounts - say for a Nexus 4. There the device is supported and aligned as it glides onto or off the USB. There is no possibility of twisting or yawing.
I think your proposal maybe over-kill - simplest solutions are always best IMHO. A guy in the Nexus 4 forum came to no good end and had a lot of unhappy 'subscribers'. Just saying.

I would normally agree. I was hoping to make one that doesnt require a case to be removed to use. I designed my previous dock the way you describe (except it used the Pogo pins on the side), but I always had to remove the case and eventually the first case was showing signs of damage from being removed so often.
My hope is that the base platform of the dock I want to build will be compatible with multiple models of smartphones and tablets that are Qi capable. That'll require a lot more planning, but may be worth it.

Well if you're set on the route you've described; ... I see you've picked up on the Peltier pump in another thread. Credit me somewhere if you make it!
But I might consider an approach made by Philips in an Android Bluetooth Speaker and dock. The adjustment for USB and its placement on an edge, plus 180 degree rotation needed for some models, was catered for physically. A much cheaper approach which copes with tablets and phones!

I think I will use a Peltier pump. And yes, I'll make sure you get credit for that idea I'll mount the transmitting coil onto the cold side (probably with a layer of copper in between, we'll try several things) and have the hot side of the pump mounted to the aluminum/sheet metal of the back plate (probably with thermal paste as well). I'll have the pump on a simple thermostat. Good thing I have an EE helping me with this project
Hopefully the final product won't need a Peltier pump, but I will definitely have it in the prototype.

I haven't had very good experiences with using that type of dock The results of daily use tend to be USB ports that are stretched and loose. At least that's how it has been in my experience.

Don't forget to talk to your EE about eddy current loses in any conductors (copper, aluminium) you have nearby to your induction coil.
Interesting read, but with the cooler this is going to be a very expensive dock. Without it, look to Canada for your market.
I rigged up one for my Nexus 4 last Winter. Based on some testing, I used the most efficient charger I could find for that phone (the LG wcp-700). It worked very well... until late spring when the mercury broke 70. To make a long story short, I pulled it last month as the phone was getting too hot. This in a suv with a 4 liter v6 with plenty of air conditioning, front and rear.
Without the cooler, the tablet needs to be located directly in front of a vent, or even in moderate climates the unit will get hot enough to significantly reduce charging current.
One more thing to consider... the Nexus 7 is polarized vertically. This means that it is invisible in landscape orientation for anyone wearing polarized driving glasses, which I am willing to bet is a large percentage of your prospective market (tech savvy, auto enthusiasts). Most displays designed for vehicles are polarized at 45°, making this not such an issue.
While the tinkerer, software developer, and electronic geek in me wanted a fully integrated tablet in my truck, I soon came to the conclusion that it was simply not practical. What is really needed is a properly done appRadio, where a head unit can mirror the display of a mobile device (ideally wirelessly - miracast, etc.) with a control link set up to pass touches on the head unit back to the mobile device. We're about 30% there now, but a lack of standards, and major players wanting proprietary solutions is a problem.
I wish you much success with your endeavor, but just wanted to share my experience and feelings that this will not be all that marketable a product.
The problems you had with the nexus 4 does not necessarily effect the nexus 7. The nexus 4 was pretty terrible at wireless charging. I had a car setup with a qi charger with the lumia 920 and it worked great even in hot weather. I am not saying the nexus 7 will work, but it might.

What makes you say that? I ask as I have seen relatively similar performance with both the N7 and N4. The tricky thing about the N4 is that the coil is not centered in the vertical dimension, so for folks making the assumption that it is, there will be quite a bit of offset.

I say that because of all the issues people had with car docks. It also had issues with the dt-900 qi chargers when it shouldn't have. It heated up excessively with most chargers.
I wonder if there will be an Official dock that lets you:
1. Charge
2. Expand TV HDMI out
3. USB port for Hard drive access
I really want the Nexus & FHD to be a Home entertainment player...may be a remote/ Or Kinect like gesture control app built in with the dock
Hope this comes true...it will be the best Combo for a home unit!

Very nice review, my friend. I've been looking around for a good security camera for the home that is wireless. This one seems to have an AC output needed for power and by the looks of it doesn't seem like it would be weatherproof. Do you know if it can be mounted outside? Thanks .
Thank you for the review.
I've been thinking of getting 2~3 IP camera's when I move to my own house (hopefully soon). These look good for the price.
Do you have any idea if these work with Synology Surveillance Station? I'd like to manage the cams on my Synology NAS, and keep the recordings stored on it. Unfortunately, the brand is not on Synology's Camera Support List.
Do you happen to own a Synology and want to test Surveillance Station? Many thanks in advance!
I'm pretty sure they will not work with that system. As a matter of fact, I got confirmation that other outdoor camera from the same ESCAM company will not integrate with that app, but they are working on updated version, to be released soon.
That Synology sounds a bit too complicated, surveillance for professional use/monitoring. Sorry, don't have or use anything like that. I was very impressed with a simplicity of the camera above and will wait for their outdoor version to add to a few outside monitoring points (just to catch neighbors walking their dogs on our lawn lol!!!). For home, I just need it to monitor my kids and when we are away on vacation.

There is a microSDHC card reader to store recordings locally, and you can store them on your Windows pc as well? Is there any option to save the recordings on a network share (e.g. on a NAS) (without a computer running)?

No, unfortunately it either records directly to microSD or when you click manually from a phone/tablet or PC where it gets stored locally. Maybe you need something more advance for what you are looking for. Maybe something like Dropcam, though it cost $200 per indoor cam and $99 annually to have cloud recording (I think 1 week stored interval only, for more you need to pay a lot more). This ESCAM solution is really for a budget oriented surveillance. They just need to add outdoor camera support to their app, and it will be pretty good. For NAS storage, it probably needs some extra security options enabled or something (sorry, have no idea about this stuff, so just guessing).
vectron said:
Unfortunately, it's not weatherproof. This is for indoor use or if you mount it by the window looking outside for outdoor surveillance. I see DX has a lot of other ESCAM cameras for outdoor use: http://www.dx.com/s/escam - I will request to get some for review, and will ask which one they can suggest to me that integrates with their current app. That would be an ultimate solution to have a split screen with multiple views of indoor and outdoor monitoring points. Btw, it supports more than 4 views, since i see Windows app with 16 views. DX, also has a dedicated page for this QF100 camera now : http://c.dx.com/collection/201408/e..._medium=homerotate&utm_campaign=20140812escam
I actually think this wireless outdoor ESCAM version will work great with it: http://www.dx.com/p/escam-q6320wifi...w-24-ir-led-white-eu-plug-318846#.U-zR12O5Q08 - I will try to get a review sample to see how it integrates with QF100 and common app control.
I do have and reviewed DropCam as well. It's a nice camera which I use often when my kids are in the basement playing. But it's limited to a fixed wide angle and after awhile it overheats because it's such a tight design with hardly any airflow (also for internal use only). The biggest problem - you have to pay monthly fee to get video access, beside $200 price tag.
But honestly, this QF100 camera is very good for $56 and has a lot of features. Definitely recommend it!

Thanks for the reply, buddy. I def agree with you. This is a great budget camera and I honestly don't feel that DropCam is worth it at all. I'm not a big fan of annual fees with limitations on storage capacity. A camera system should be straight forward and simple for you to have complete access to because it is YOURS. I really hope a perfect outdoor system comes. Let me know how it turns out when you get that review sample .

Btw, Anker is working on their own version of "dropcam" ip camera, without monthly paid subscription but for indoor only. Will be interesting to see what they come up with (I was selected for beta testing, so perhaps will have my impressions in a few weeks).

These cameras designed for internal (inside of the house) use only. Their housing is not designed for outside use, but the company is working on a new outside version that will work with the same control app. No need to use LAN cable since it's wireless. With power connector, unfortunately, no way around it. Need to bring out the wires. Btw, that is a common power tip on the connector and you can get usb cables with an adapter for that connector. So in theory you can power up multiple cameras from usb ac wall charger, like those 5 port ones from anker or bolse.

None of them integrate with the same app used by QF100. It's not just about the camera. You want to have different cameras connecting to one app so you can monitor everything at once, rather than use different apps for different cameras ESCAM is working on a new outdoor version that will work with their existing app.

Has anyone got this to work other than reviewer?
I largely purchased this camera based on the review here...What a disappointment, either everyone is receiving a different version or the reviewer is making false claims... The camera does NOT work outside of the local LAN! This makes it useless. DDNS does not work. I'm computer savvy have a few other IP cameras and this model is not accessible outside the LAN even if you open all ports on the router. Support requests unanswered... the app is garbage, this camera does not work with other Android apps either, a wasted $60...

I'd say your best bet would be to look at getting an MHL adaptor and using HDMI.

Hello, I am considering buying this monitor: https://www.asus.com/Monitors/MB168BPlus/
Does anybody know whether it would work?
Thanks in advance

Hello,
I can confirm that the MB168B+ does work (very well) with the Z5P.
It is correct that the monitor will draw too much power to run direct from the Z5P; you can use a mains powered Hub as mentioned in the thread but you can also use a 'Power Bank' type rechargeable battery in conjunction with an OTG Host Adapter if you need freedom from a mains socket.
The inherent limitation is then simply the capacity of your batteries (you can't concurrently charge the phone while using the micro-USB OTG connection to the display).
Use the native Settings | Device Connection | USB Connectivity to find the ASUS MB168B+
You just need to install DisplayLink Desktop from the Play store (free App), follow the on-screen instructions and away you go.
The app is currently limited to 1 DisplayLink display, operating at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p).
One limitation is that the ASUS screen only seems to work in landscape orientation with Android. Brilliant for any App, Video, etc., displaying in landscape 16:9, but doesn't realise the full potential of also being able to give you a full Portrait image using the entire screen with it rotated through 90 degrees.
With the phone connected and home screen displayed, the mirrored image will be upright and centred on the screen.
If you go to an app which supports landscape mode, the ASUS display will follow the physical orientation of the phone to full HD landscape presentation.
The MB168B+ has a built-in Auto Rotate feature which can automatically senses its orientation and switches the display between landscape and portrait based on its position - it works when driven from Windows, but apparently not with the current Android flavoured DisplayLink Driver.. Undoubtedly possible, but one for some permutation of DisplayLink and ASUS to figure and add the functionality into the driver.
That would be particularly handy if you wanted to demonstrate the phone's Home Screen, Settings, etc. to an audience. But doesn't diminish the opportunity to display, for example, 1080p Video straight from the phone onto a decent size screen.
I will take some photos to illustrate the display in operation, running on battery power, and upload later this evening.... now added below:
PS. If you are thinking of buying the ASUS screen, there is a newer model - ASUS MB169B+ recently released with an IPS panel (rather than WLED/ TN) which should be visually a meaningful improvement
[TN has a high response rate and good for gaming, but suffers from colour distortion, especially at wider viewing angles; IPS gives much more accurate colour rendition and across wide viewing angles and is better for photography, video viewing and design].PPS. The stand the ASUS screen is on in the photos is a Belkin FlipBlade - personally I much prefer to the arrangement using the supplied carry sleeve for relatively static desktop use, although that works absolutely fine and is particularly handy if you only want to have the screen in its' case with you and no extra gubbins.
Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Just curious but what rom are you using for your phone to look like that? Sorry, I'm pretty new to this set up but your phone setup and music player looks awesome! I like those toggles as well. Can you show me how to make mine look something like that? :fingers-crossed:

Hello - thank you for the comments - I'm happy to try and illuminate a bit......
It's the stock ROM as supplied, seasoned with an assortment of apps and widgets.
As this is a bit off topic, I've added a new post with proper screenshots and details of the components in the 'Home Screen' thread instead.
Have a look there and by all means let me know if you've any further questions.
Best regards,
Kevin

Thanks very much for your helpful post, excellent.
I notice in the image you have a power bank (I'm assuming) - could you please share your experiences with powering the monitor from a power bank particularly how much screen time you manage to have, what the monitor brightness is set to and what capacity your power bank is.
Thanks!

Hello and thanks for the enquiry. I'm glad you found the original post helpful
Yes, it is a small power bank shown in the pictures. That one is Vinsic 5000 Ah model. It's almost identical in size to a slim 2.5" hard drive such as the Seagate Slim 2TB models and fits very neatly into a neoprene protective sleeve from Clas Ohlsson. I also have a much bigger Vinsic 20000 Ah power bank which gives 4x the capacity. That's also the maximum capacity allowed by IATA (in checked or carry-on baggage).
Since the previous post I've gone over to the newer Asus MB 169 B+ with the IPS display, but for the purposes of power it behaves the same as the MB 168 B+.
I will add some more images in the next few days, including the big Vinsic and more details about run time, etc.
Best regards,
Kevin
Im trying to get my Asus MB169B+ to work with my Samsung S7 Edge.
But after a while it once asked to open the connection with DisplayLink Presenter, and it did work (Also with powerbank as mentioned above).
But it never asks me again, and opening the DisplayLink Presenter doesnt help as well.
How can i connect my S7 Edge to my Asus MB169B+ ?
Thanks
Hi guys,
I am looking for a little external monitor to display QR codes to customers. So frame rate, lag, color or picture quality are non priorities. It could work like on a smart TV, by projecting the whole screen, or we could also write custom software to make it work. It can also be cable bound. And no, diy is out of the question, because I need 100+ of them.
Any tipps appreciated
