So my ZL won't power up past the boot animation without an external power source.
When I do boot it up and unplug the USB cable, it works for about 30 seconds then it shuts down.
The phone seems to charge fine.
I've already wiped the phone and flashed stock ftf files but the problem persists.
I don't know what else to try, any suggestions?

That's kinda like last resort.
My bootloader is also unlocked so i would actually rather buy another phone than shell out a few hundred to fix it.
Recovery, fastboot, and flash mode work normally. Its just booting into the system.

I dont think Sony will take it under warranty because unlocking the Bootloader voids warranty...

Funny, mine is doing the EXACT same thing. I think mine overheated once this week, and now I can't boot without plugging it in, and if it doesn't stay plugged in, it will rebook when I launch an app.

Of course I have! lol, this isn't a ROM issue, it's a hardware issue. I have a locked bootloader, no custom kernel, which means no damage from ROMs.

I was commenting because it's likely we have the same problem, and since I've never heard of this particular problem in ANY OTHER android, it makes it a ZL problem. I was simply letting the OP know he's not alone, obviously we're both going to send them to Sony for replacement.
My ZL developed this issue today. the key difference is that I need it plugged into the charger to boot since it will not boot when it is plugged into my pc.
c6506, rooted once, locked bootloader, no custom roms installed.

I don't own a ZL, but i'm planning on buying one later this year(I hope!). Since there are several cases of this issue it would be a good idea if everyone who has it gives a bit of detail on phone usage, how long they've owned the phone, charging habits, etc.

I consider myself a very "light" user as I use the phone to check emails/send texts, and look up the odd thing that's blocked at work. While on the subway, I'll listen to music or watch the odd video that I've DL'd...very minimal gaming, though the last two games I DL'd were a couple of Mobage games - Transformers Legends and Monster Match which I would play pretty much all day when work is slow.
Nothing out of the ordinary with charging..phone gets to ~10%, I'll charge. There was the odd times I would charge the phone while playing those games, but again, nothing out of the ordinary
Just became another Victim of this issue two days ago.
were this all happened on 4.2.2 - 10.3.1.A.2.67?
I updated to 4.2.2 - 10.3.1.A.2.67 few days ago and then this happened.
anyone got his/her fixed already?

I have C6506, I have overheating and reboots. When it overheats a little it reboots automatically, sometimes even doesn't get to homescreen.
I've send a letter to sony, but about 4 days, no answer!
I rooted the phone, unlocked the bootloader, flashed stock firmware and nothing changed for a while, but then suddenly it rebooted.
And I locked bootloader, and full wiped all phone, all sd cards, but no luck. Even unrooted the phone, but the Overheating is still there. ;(
Some tips.Answer for Z1 is firmware downgrading, but is it for our ZL! ?

Well in the end I just sent it in for repairs. Sony are trying to fix issue, it's been over 10 days still not sorted. I think they are awaiting parts, will keep you posted.

I guess Sony makes it harder for them selves for making so much problems with these Battery's for ZL,Z,Z1 phones. So much clients are very sad and angry and probably they won't buy another Xperia phone ever again. This was an SHOCK FOR ME, that such a company (SONY) would be so lightminded about their phones.

Some say that these problems with inbuilt battery are because of the chargers.
The seller i bought from said that it could solve the problem by finsing the original usb cable and the charger.
The problem with me is that my adapter is for USA and I can't simply use in Latvia(Europe).
So try charging youre phone with original usb and adapter, that came with youre phone.
Somebody knows prices for fizing this problem if sony charges from me.?

It seems I'm having issues with my 6506 ZL and I don't know if it's related to the Battery bug issue, and/or something else - so I've come to my brothers and sisters here to help :good:
1. The phone will not boot unless it's plugged in (either through USB or the wall charger) as once it hits the Sony logo (or animation) it will turn off.
2. Once I manage to get in, I'm able to use the phone with no issues
3. ..and when I unplug the phone again, if I leave it alone, I'm able to do basic things like use the unlock screen go to different homepages, and open the app drawer
4. If I select a widget, app, or go into settings, the phone turns off.
Since an update wasn't available via the PCC or SUS, I flashed the most recent firmware 10.3.1.A.0.244 myself, and it doesn't seem to help the issue so I'm led to believe it's a problem with the hardware itself - maybe a sensor or something that reads the battery as dead?
Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I can try doing, or am I SOL and need to send it to Sony repair (and potentially have to pay to fix it)? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the info - I'll keep that in mind for the future, now that I'm semi-comfortable flashing roms :/ Judging by the way he was grilling me, I don't think Sony would accept a modified phone anyway to repair.
But based on my issue, I'm lead to believe it's a hardware issue. Should I try flashing another rom to see if it improves (though I still need to figure out this business about kernels)
Update:
Sony is going to send me a coffin so I can ship my phone to them to get repaired. I have a feeling that they're going to ask for a proof of purchase, however, this phone was given to me as a gift, and the guy who gave it to me is only here 6 months out of the year...am I SOL? any kind soul out there have a bill I could "borrow"?
Sony Xperia ZL C6505 woes
I know this is a bit late (as the post is dated), but it is a hardware issue.
I had the exact same issue, and I managed to figure out the pattern to get past the "boot loop". I do believe it is a board issue, where there has to be some controller that lets the phone know when the battery is dead or not. And I'm 95% sure, its the heat generated by the phone that has ruined that component. Sony makes very excellent products (I've had a number of them- PSP, PS Vita, 2 Sony Vaio laptops), but sometimes when they make silly mistakes- like failing to properly dissipate heat from a handheld device running a quad-core processor. Never had any heat issues with the pSP or PS Vita, but definitely with the two VAIO laptops.
In this instance, I at first thought it was the phone battery, but i ran CPU-z utility on the phone, and it found the battery life to be good. I then took it to a place to change the battery (believing it was a false reading), but they confirmed the battery was good. The phone was experiencing a board issue.
So definitely no firmware flash or Android OS update is going to fix that. It may fix the issue in the future if it prevents some Android OS/Google system component from running the system hot. My phone is on Android OS 4.1.2, and when the battery level fell below 40%, it would start to get hot (roughly 65-70 Celsius); sometimes apps to help cool the phone would drop temperature to 42 Celsius.
So, me and a friend of mine tried to Root my brand new Zl ( model no. c6502 ) after that, whenever I try to turn it on (without a charger), the device vibrates, Sony logo appears and then shut off itself. With the wall charger, right after I plug the USB cord, the LED Notification turn on in the red color, Sony logo appears again and then resets, but with another thing, after reseting the device enters in some kind of boot-loop and it simply don't stop. After I had all this headache, I tried to use both Sony Update Service and PC Companion in order to restore the "original" rom, with no success by using SUS, but with PC Companion, although, by holding the OFF button until it vibrates 3 times and then try to turn it on by pressing Vol-Up + Power Button with the charger plugged in, I managed to make it boot. The only problem is, if I take the Charger cord out, the device simply shut down, recreating the whole problem again...
My ZL is currently without BLU ( BootLoader Unlocker ) along with the original Rom installed directly from the PC Companion.
I'm worried because it looks like some hardware issue or a problem with some kind of file that assist the device in it's boot...
Besides me, is there anyone that had the same problem as mine and know how to fix this issue? Can any of you guys help me, please?
Thank you so much for the attention

So...After struggling with my phone for what now...5 days, now i'm having the same problem from a guy that I say these past days. While out of the Wall Charger, Sony logo appears but it doesn't boot. With wall charger, it boots, Android starts and everything works just fine, until you take it off from the charger, working for like...2 seconds, it turns off...
I think that I'm almost fixing it XD
Is anyone having the same problem as mine? Anyone who actually made it work? Please, share with us how? xD
P.S.: I'm still trying to figure it out, but help is greatly appreciated
Anyone? D:
If flashing new rom can't help, I advise you to get a warranty. There is one guy here having that similar problem, he tried so many method to fix but to no avail. To save ur time just claim the warranty.
Ur problem seem to related with power source which related with battery.

Hey guys,
Looks like I have a very unique problem here with my Galaxy S4, M919. I've had the phone for about 2 months and it's worked flawlessly until yesterday. It just randomly stopped charging!
I've replaced the charging port already and also re-flashed ROM (aokp_jfltetmo_kitkat_nightly_2014-03-27).
I am unable to charge the phone, however it syncs perfectly with my PC. I've searched all day yesterday and all morning today for anyone with a similar problem but have yet to find anything.
You guys are my best and only hope now.
Please..anyone. I really need your help! I can't afford to purchase a new device.
If you require more information, let me know.
Thanks in advance for your time and help!
EDIT
I just ordered a Qi Wireless Charger from eBay. I'm hoping it'll allow me to charge the phone since it completely bypassed the charging port and is located on the mobo itself. Will update once it arrives and I test it out.
Still looking for answers to this problem though. So if anyone has any thoughts on what may have happened (and its solution), it would be greatly appreciated!
EDIT 2
Just received the Qi Wireless Charger.. It does not work either =(
I will be flashing back to stock again and try to charge the phone while it is off. This is the last thing I can try now. If it still doesn't work, I will be parting out my phone.
LCD $180
MoBo $120
Remaining parts can be discussed
Just message if interested!

Hey. Thanks for the reply.
I've already tried flashing a new kernel as well as ROM. I've tried all 4 ports on my PC. I forgot to mention that it also does not charge through any wall adapters. Any charging method that involves using a Micro USB cable does not work. The only response I can get is data sync when attached to my PC.

If you are with T-Mobile, I sure hope you have insurance or JUMP. As a T-Mobile employee, I can vouch that this problem is considered a hardware defect and would fall under an insurance plan. The only thing is though, you'd you have to return to full uprooted stock as an employee in your store will have to perform a physical and software diagnosis. Physical is easy as long as the phone has no cracked screen, no water damage and is YOUR phone. Software, they will plug it into our diagnosis tool where we'd be able to see if you've installed ROMs and such, which would void your warranty.

Yeah. I've gone to stock..still doesn't charge. Re-rooted and flashed aokp again and same thing.
I honestly have no idea what could cause this. I've never..and i really mean never dropped my phone, nor had any sort of shock or damage to it. No liquid/moisture anywhere around it. No dust. It doesn't make sense for it to be something physical.. it's still being picked up by my computer. I'm still able to flash and transfer files to/from the phone. It just is not charging.

Well, it's most likely a malfunction then my friend. A customer came into my store just the other day with his S5 he just purchased three days prior. The device was stuck on that S-View screen even when the S-View case was not covering the screen and even completely detached. We tried everything you can at a T-Mobile store. Even factory reset. Still, the problem persisted. It happens friend, hope you have insurance or JUMP

I don't have insurance..I'm going to wait to try out the wireless charger and take it from there. I might sell the phone to someone with the wireless charger. Will have to just wait and see lol.
Really appreciate your time and help!

Are you still having this issue?
I am having the same issue, but this only happens when installing a rom. You cannot just reflash the stock rom. If you still have to phone, I can give you a link on what to down load to set your phone back to defaults. Once you set it back to defaults you should be fine.
My issue:
I installed any custom rom and this Tmobile Phone will not charge at all!!!!
Complete set back to Tmobile Defaults charges perfectly.
I will try flashing a custom Kernel with battery management to see if this help.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up selling the phone to someone for a cheaper price. I tried to ODIN back to stock, however it didn't work. I'd still like to know why it would stop charging if a custom ROM was installed though.
Best of luck with your phone :good:

I found my issue, it first came by my root method. I was using a method that wasn't designed for my model. Then the issue was recovery, again wrong type for model. Finally I got everything to work and I lost lte. to fix that I just added the LTE profile and it works.
My Sony Xperia ZL is NOT booting up unless it has an external power supply. The phone vibrates, shows the SONY bootscreen, and then dies. Also, the phone runs perfectly until i disconnect it and it simply dies in the blink of an eye. I have an unlocked bootloader and was on CM10.2, flashed the stock ftf for 4.3, then 4.2, and yet nothing worked! My device is just around 8 months old and i doubt that my battery can be dead all of a sudden when it was giving decent backup until today!

I'd advice you to take it to the service center.

my bootloader is unlocked so the warranty will most probably be void. Also, since this is a sudden development, am hoping it's a software problem.

If you have taken a backup of your TA partition, then relock your bootloader before you go to the service center.
I'm pretty sure that your battery is dead.
Do you have a Trim Area backup? If so, restore it and then take it to service.

i have the same issue, tested with service menu and it said battery status is GOOD...
but whats the different between u and me is i didn't unlock the bootloader, but i used the phone more than 1 year and so the warranty is not valid anymore...

ITS YOUR BATTERY! TRUST ME!
I had the exact same issue. Just spring for a 30$ battery from eBay. Worked for me! I also brought an Xperia T back to life by replacing the battery ?. It would only show a blinking red light but wouldnt boot or charge. New battery fixed it. Sony DEFINITELY has some kinks to work out with their batteries. At the very least they need to go back to removable ones.

You can use it while charging but not while its off charge. If the sony center denies the problem with the battery, No one can help you. You need to check the battery. Hardware related issue. So none of us can help you out online. Please try to get your battery replaced. I think you can do that.
