Ok guys, so I saw somewhere around here, a while back I think that Sprint changed some of it's fine print in the contract...Soooo, no one flame me or anything, but does anyone have any info on this? Thinking of jumping ship to verizon. I have 4 lines right now and pay around $176 a month and all the lines are still under contract for a while. I'm not set on going to verizon, but would just like to get some ideas....Thanks for any input....yes...I'm thinking about getting the iphone
edit: I think I found something...This was just on my latest bill, I did some research and any change to the previous contract is a breach and you have 30 days to get out of your contract. Now, you can get out of your contract and still keep your service, just not be tied down to a fricken contract! Here is what was on my last bill:
Directory Assistance 411 Increase
Effective 3/1/11, the domestic Directory Assistance 411 base charge will increase to $1.99 per call.
Please let me know if I am wrong, but when I worked for Verizon this is the way it was for them too.
good thread, im interested in switching away from sprint too.

Thanks, I'm sure a few people are interested in getting out...Have you called Sprint about it yet? Sometimes they're really helpful to me and sometimes they straight up lie to my face and say they gave me a $50 credit and I'll call back a few days later to see where it is and they have "no idea" and then wont give it to me...I guess I was a little let down after this ****ty ass "announcement" they made tonight...I've been with 'em for 8 years and really don't want to switch, but it's starting to look like that.
Nothing will get you out of the ETF right now, Sprint has been really careful with their changes lately. The Premium Data fee, Sprint Premier, 411 charges - none of those are a change to your current contract. The only way out is if you roam too much and they kick you off the network.

Same here, some days I can't reach my wife if she's at home because the phone won't ring and my texts won't go through for a while. I tried to talk to Sprint about an Airave but they argued with me and said I'm in an "excellent coverage area" and told me no, even after contacting Executive Services. That was the last straw for me.
Change your PRL to a VZW PRL and start hitting them HARD for data. According to the terms of service, they can give you the boot for anything over 300 megs per month or more than 50% of all data as roaming data. If you're rooted on all the phones, do them all at the same time and then Sprint will want you all dead.

I was doing some reading on and i read that if sprint can't cover you in a place they don't offer service you can complain and they will waive the ETF, for example tell them you are being relocated to somewhere overseas where they don't offer any type of service, if they can't accomadte you they will let you out, i haven't tried this soooo i can't confirm

I called and got an Airave for free. What you have to do is set up a consistent series of calls with them. It took me three calls but I got it. Then again, I had a legitimate issue.
Essentially, call every time there is an issue. Write down the time it happens, what happened, and where you were. Call sprint and tell them what the issue is. They may transfer to you an "advanced" tech department. Or, they may tell you to come in to the store to have your phone checked out.
As we all know, it most likely isn't your phone because it is happening on multiple lines. Decline going to a store. Insist on speaking to the advanced tech department. Tell them your problem and they will do something on their end. Wait until that "resolves" (which usually it doesn't because the coverage is strong in that area). Then call back again and complain. Try to get transferred to retentions and see if you can get one.
yep
They would not let me out of the ETF but I was able to get a free airave myself. w00t! But I would still like to cancel and switch to BOOST mobile.
I posted about a week ago, and was told to just call and ask. I was told I have good coverage in my area(b.s) and that i use to much data to possibly complain about my service. Can anyone give me some tips, I get horrible coverage, I already received an airwave, which only works when i'm at home. I want to switch to verizon cause lte is in my area unlike wimax, but etf fees kill it having 3 lines.

They notate the account but that's not really relevant here.
If you can prove that your speeds have been terrible with screenshots, they can't really argue with that.

"if a change we make to the Agreement is material and has a material adverse affect on you, you may terminate each line of Service materially affected without incurring an Early Termination Fee only if you: (a) call us within 30 days after the effective date of the change; and (b) specifically advise us that you wish to cancel Services because of a material change to the Agreement that we have made. If you do not cancel Service within 30 days of the change, an Early Termination Fee will apply if you terminate Services before the end of any applicable Term Commitment."
If you were just switched from premier gold to silver like many people were, you might be able to use this clause to get out of your contract.

Although I am not currently interested in actually switching from Sprint [not really any companies with comparable rates nor a business philosophy that I could justify giving money to], they did extend a removal of any ETF fees to all my lines for this slow data issue, just in case.

Yeah but let's keep in mind that when you're switching not only are you getting a new plan but you're also buying all new phones which can cost around $1000.
The total to cancel my 3 lines would be $420 and I could sell the phones for $900 obo. Which wouldn't leave enough to buy 3 thunderbolts, but they did give me a $50 discount for this month only.

Why don't you drive to a local Starbucks that's close enough with 4G/3G. Flash the Verizon prl and for like a week or two just sit in Starbucks and say you're doing a survey to test sprints 4G/3G and offer 8 people to connect to your evo. Each day you go just keep letting users connect to your 4G claiming you're a sprint Rep and watch your data sky rocket!!!!! Lol Then sprint will have no choice but to let you off since you'll be roaming on Verizons network. Get back at those a$$holes.

First of all, it's not across the board.
Some cities are having the problem, most are not.
Second of all, the 4g expansion is a matter of money issues.
The suggestion that Sprint is taking their time fixing these issues and taking their time expanding 4g because they want to is just ridiculous.
And by the way did you just suggest that doing the right thing is an elementary school quality?
How pathetic, man, seriously.

It is wrong to abuse something for the sake of abusing it.
Especially when sprint will and is required to waive the fees for this issue.
And I seriously hope that people that abuse in this matter are held to some sort of legal consequences.
And as far as your not needing to be told what's right and wrong...maybe if you KNEW what was right and wrong you wouldn't have to be told.

How many months did you get away with this?
Also, did they NEVER send you a letter/call you telling you that you were roaming a lot?
You'd think they'd give you a heads up.
One other thought... Do you think you could call them and ask them to not terminate you? Basically say something like, oh i only roam while at home, can you send me an airave so that I don't roam at home (at the office i get great service), something like that?

12 months is a good amount of time.
Were you consistantly downloading around 6gb a month (on roam)?
I suspect if you just used this on your phone for normal activites (streaming pandora/web searches/google maps/nav etc...) that you'd probably be good to go.
I only ask because I have HORRIBLE service where I live and found the 01337 prl to be 1000x improvement as far as speed (60681- 10kb/s if lucky, 01337-mod 120 kb/s).
-RR
I'm surprised they don't look into where you're roaming and figure out why it's roaming so much.
if roaming because of PRL(They see great Sprint coverage where you roam) - warn you about it and charge ETF.
If roaming because of no sprint = cut service off as was done to OP.
What if you want to renew with them? Do they add you to some sort of black list?
newalker91 said:
I don't understand why anyone is acting surprised. This is clearly outlined in your contract that if you use over 50% of your voice/data per month roaming that your account will be subject to termination. The fact that they allowed you to get away with it for a year while using far more data roaming than the average Sprint customer does on the native network is nothing short of amazing. The massive bill that you have racked them up in roaming charges from Verizon should be grounds for them to sue you, to be honest. Sprint can see your PRL, and forcibly changing your PRL to roam 100% of the time should be grounds for termination with ETF. This ruins things for the rest of us as the revenue that could have gone to expanding/improving our network is now being used to pay off the massive debt incurred by people abusing roaming privileges.

I don't think sprint gets a bill each month for X number of kilobytes people roam.
This is why they have signed roaming agreements... They pay a flat fee and users can then roam (no addl. cost to them).
Correct me if I'm wrong...
But I will say that it's unacceptable to run a speed test on Sprint, get only 10kb/s if lucky, flash a verizon prl and hit over 120kb/s and not feel like you're getting ripped off.
Every time I call sprint Data techs (they open a ticket and eventually tell me all towers are working correctly and there is no problem with the network)... Very disappointing.

Well if you want Verizon speeds, then you can go on Verizon IMO. While I love the fact that Sprint has low prices and I'd LOVE if they actually made them into decent speeds, jumping on a different PRL and getting terminated will just be worse int he long run since I don't want to pay for verizon service.
Wow, I honesty don't remember ever seeing anyone confirm that they were booted for excessive roaming. I never change PRLs and hardly ever roam but thanks for letting people know.

thank you for your presence here on XDA
i'd like to take a minute to mention 2 things.
1. in a contract that takes longer than ONE (1) minute to read, there is no such thing as "clearly stated" and I can't vouch for your colleagues encouraging people to read them. the contract gets highlighted in a couple places and it's a "sign here, here 'n here sur!"
2. there's a clause in federal law where if party B agrees to not do something under contract with party A, and party A does not enforce their contract within X time frame (never knew how long but would love to know), party A has then waived their right to file suit.

use a 3G roaming prl and download a TON of (legal) torrents. It might take 2 to 4 months, but they will drop you from service.

Or....you could be civil about it. Call care, and plead your case, nicely. They have been known to allow customers out of a contract without and etf so long as the equipment gets returned, ask them if they'll make exception for you and let you do that
EDIT: never mind, I read your original post. I do think it's unreasonable to expect to not have to return the phone and not pay an etf either. Regardless of the amount you paid for the phone, you did enter a contract, and sprint ate a lot of money up front when you signed that contract.
If you feel so strongly about it, though, just cancel and eat the etf cost, and you should more than make up for it by how much you can sell the phones on eBay.

I've been a Sprint customer for 10+ years and I've had almost zero complaints until these dang smart phones became the mainstream thing to have. Back when I had my Samsung Instinct the speeds were GOOD. For example, tethering was around 1.5mb all day long. By the time I got the EVO 4G though, things went down the toilet. Smart phones got super popular and Sprint simply couldn't handle it.
To top that off we got slapped in the face with a $10 dollar premium for 4G, oh excuse me "premium data" that doesn't even work for most of us. I have no 4G here and I' lucky to get 50kb's on 3G. I get 1.2mb on the Verizon PRL though.
I'd been using the 11115 PRL and toggling between Sprint and Verizon when I needed more speed but I've recently switched to the 00002 PRL in hopes of getting dropped. I shouldnt HAVE to toggle to Verizon to make my phone work.
I've complained to Sprint, they simply do not care. I bet they will start to care when I plug my phone in this weekend and pick some random Blue-ray sized files to torrent over 3G.
Can't wait to get over to AT&T or Verizon. I loved Sprint when it worked. I'd rather have a 5GB cap that works then unlimited that doesn't. Who cares about unlimited if you can't use it?
The plus side to having them boot me is I can keep my Epic Touch and resell it to help re-coop some of the money I feel I got scammed out of dealing with Sprint now that they don't seem to want to fix their network or compensate those of us who are/were loyal customers and are sick of this slow non-usable network.
Great...another thread for people to come in and post about how crappy Sprint's speed is and to teach people how to screw Sprint and the other millions of Sprint users that don't have problems (like me) by forcing your phone to roam and download tons of data.
amen sister.
I'm almost 1 year into my 2 year contract with sprint and I cannot wait until I can get out of it. I signed on because of unlimited data, which is great because I get 4g at work, but if I'm not at work or near one of the sp****ly placed 4g towers, I'm screwed.

do you have 4g wherever you go in your city?
My problem is that there are 6 4g towers placed around cincinnati and if you're not withing 1-2 miles of it, no 4g for you. Then, because we are a fairly dense market, the 3g speeds suck and the phone is almost useless.
Sprint does suck. Sprint has fallen so far behind the competition that i'm shocked that anybody ever renews a contract with them.
Yeah my service with sprint (virgin mobile) ain't great but hey I pay $25 a month for service. You just can't beat that!

It I was paying $25 a month, I wouldn't ***** but I'm paying $108ish and I feel like I'm being kicked in the balls.
Being a 10+ year Sprint customer who has seen the service go down the drain, I have every right to complain because I know how it used to be before they decided to add all these new smart devices but not add new network to back them up.

Yeah, I have no plans of using the Verizon PRL and get kicked. I have been in touch with customer service and it is getting to the point where they might let me out without ETF. I did not know that they would request the phones to be returned so I am trying to decide 1) if that's reasonable, and 2) if it is, then if it would be cheaper to pay ETF instead.
Tell them to refund your $200.00 dollars and you will be glad to return it.
I would be annoyed if on top of paying for the crap service they also wanted the phone back.

Great...another thread for people to come in and post about how crappy Sprint's speed is and to teach people how to screw Sprint and the other millions of Sprint users that don't have problems (like me) by forcing your phone to roam and download tons of data.

Agreed as well. If you sign a contract, man-up and fulfill your side of the agreement.
I totally do NOT agree with that. If you sign a contract and the provider can't provide what has been promised, the contract should be void.

What exactly did they promise? They specifically do not promise any speed, ive looked.
I agree with u op. Sprint speeds have gotten a lot worse for me as well. My phone is not usable unless I'm on wifi. Its ridiculous. BUT u did sign a contract and you had two weeks to try it out. Hope it works out for u.

The attitude of well it sucks but i did sign a contact that specifically does NOT make any speed promised etc is exactly why we keep getting screwed.
Considering I'm paying $108 dollars a month, $10 of that being for "premium data", it should at least WORK. On my phone, its unusable off wi-fi. No joke, sites can take up to 2 and 3 minutes to load and that is IF it loads. Normally something times out.
That is a load of crap, hence why I'm currently forced roaming on Verizon.

If it is so bad that you cannot even use it, you need to call Sprint, and keep calling them until they either fix it or they let you out of your contract because they are not living up to their obligation to the contract. Coming on XDA and crying about it will get you nowhere. This is a development website, not a ***** fest site about the provider. Take this **** elsewhere.
I'm going to stop this before it goes any further. Sorry your speeds aren't up to par (mine aren't either), but you will need to find another way than discussing here. Contracts are contracts, no way around it. Just call and call until you get the answer you want. This will turn out to be a war and we do not need that here as we have enough of that already.
Is there a way to force my sprint note 2 to roam on verizon or some other network? I am trying to piss off sprint so they cancel my contract  and avoid the $340 termination fee. I have unlimited plan so not worried about roaming costs.
Is there a PRL or some setting? I have already tweaked my roaming guard etc.
Thank You in advance!

Before the latest ota update you could force roam without root. Now the only way is to root and install a zip file. If your rooted let me know and I can give you site with directions.
Also just for your information sprint has a limit on how much data you can roam. It's a limit of 300mb. Even though on your account it says unlimited roaming your contract fine print says otherwise. They will not cut you off for going over once or twice but do it all the time and they will send you a warning letter.

Really? You signed the damn contract, grow a pair and honor it. Pay your ETF if you want out like a responsible adult. People that do this sh!t should be put in a database and barred from getting another cell phone from any provider. Technically what you want to do is a crime, it's called fraud, and it's a felony in most states. This sh!t is getting ridiculous.

Yeahh..Here's where you're wrong. Sprint knows that their signal can be weak, that's why they have the free domestic roaming plan included with contacts. Hence, it's not illegal. Instead of ranting, you should actually answer the question. I know this because when you're on trains, for instance, you can roam free of charge and it's not illegal. What this guy wants to do is make it roam instead of waiting for it to activate...really not that serious so relax. :good:

That's funny, because every ROM I release has a "roam only" mode built right into it. People who make a$$hole posts in forums without contributing anything useful should be put in a database and barred from making another post on any forum. Technically, what you posted is flat-out wrong and makes you look like a jerk. But hey, thanks for playing.
Roaming is illegal...right.
It's not his fault sprint has promised tons of network upgrades, yet I require an airrave just to get signal in my own house - in the middle of the biggest city in my state. Violating a TOS is a far cry from doing something illegal.
Yeah I agree with the guy above. Basically, what the jerk was trying to say is, if you literally ONLY roam, you'd get kicked off sprint and have to pay the ETF.. But if you roam when you have weak signal, that's another story. They do this because technically since the customers don't pay for roaming, they do; it's a pain if you just roam all the time, only roam when there is weak signal. How to go about doing this? I'm not 100 percent sure, but there are ROMS that can do so, just look around in the development section.
A 5 second google search will get you the answer to which you seek.
It's this line here "I am trying to piss off sprint so they cancel my contract and avoid the $340 termination fee."
Is the part that shouldn't be posted. XDA frowns on this kind of behavior.

Roaming isn't illegal, using it excessively to intentionally get kicked from sprint for excessive roaming is. it would be fraud because you are knowingly defrauding the company to break a contract. Your reading comprehension is a fail. I never said anything about roaming I was talking about people using it to break their contract so they don't have to pay an etf. Intentionally violating TOS to break a contract because you don't want to honor it is considered fraud which is illegal

I'm going to shut this one down as it is a sensitive subject and it's already going downhill. OP, use the search button please, plenty of answers to be found on the interwebz. Even on this site.
