Hi, I posted this question in the general xda section, but no one has replied so I am hoping someone here can respond.

use a 3G roaming prl and download a TON of (legal) torrents. It might take 2 to 4 months, but they will drop you from service.

Or....you could be civil about it. Call care, and plead your case, nicely. They have been known to allow customers out of a contract without and etf so long as the equipment gets returned, ask them if they'll make exception for you and let you do that
EDIT: never mind, I read your original post. I do think it's unreasonable to expect to not have to return the phone and not pay an etf either. Regardless of the amount you paid for the phone, you did enter a contract, and sprint ate a lot of money up front when you signed that contract.
If you feel so strongly about it, though, just cancel and eat the etf cost, and you should more than make up for it by how much you can sell the phones on eBay.

I've been a Sprint customer for 10+ years and I've had almost zero complaints until these dang smart phones became the mainstream thing to have. Back when I had my Samsung Instinct the speeds were GOOD. For example, tethering was around 1.5mb all day long. By the time I got the EVO 4G though, things went down the toilet. Smart phones got super popular and Sprint simply couldn't handle it.
To top that off we got slapped in the face with a $10 dollar premium for 4G, oh excuse me "premium data" that doesn't even work for most of us. I have no 4G here and I' lucky to get 50kb's on 3G. I get 1.2mb on the Verizon PRL though.
I'd been using the 11115 PRL and toggling between Sprint and Verizon when I needed more speed but I've recently switched to the 00002 PRL in hopes of getting dropped. I shouldnt HAVE to toggle to Verizon to make my phone work.
I've complained to Sprint, they simply do not care. I bet they will start to care when I plug my phone in this weekend and pick some random Blue-ray sized files to torrent over 3G.
Can't wait to get over to AT&T or Verizon. I loved Sprint when it worked. I'd rather have a 5GB cap that works then unlimited that doesn't. Who cares about unlimited if you can't use it?
The plus side to having them boot me is I can keep my Epic Touch and resell it to help re-coop some of the money I feel I got scammed out of dealing with Sprint now that they don't seem to want to fix their network or compensate those of us who are/were loyal customers and are sick of this slow non-usable network.
Great...another thread for people to come in and post about how crappy Sprint's speed is and to teach people how to screw Sprint and the other millions of Sprint users that don't have problems (like me) by forcing your phone to roam and download tons of data.
amen sister.
I'm almost 1 year into my 2 year contract with sprint and I cannot wait until I can get out of it. I signed on because of unlimited data, which is great because I get 4g at work, but if I'm not at work or near one of the sp****ly placed 4g towers, I'm screwed.
*Edit* LOL it starred out "a" "r" "s" "e" in spar sely

do you have 4g wherever you go in your city?
My problem is that there are 6 4g towers placed around cincinnati and if you're not withing 1-2 miles of it, no 4g for you. Then, because we are a fairly dense market, the 3g speeds suck and the phone is almost useless.
Sprint does suck. Sprint has fallen so far behind the competition that i'm shocked that anybody ever renews a contract with them.
Yeah my service with sprint (virgin mobile) ain't great but hey I pay $25 a month for service. You just can't beat that!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
It I was paying $25 a month, I wouldn't ***** but I'm paying $108ish and I feel like I'm being kicked in the balls.
Being a 10+ year Sprint customer who has seen the service go down the drain, I have every right to complain because I know how it used to be before they decided to add all these new smart devices but not add new network to back them up.

Yeah, I have no plans of using the Verizon PRL and get kicked. I have been in touch with customer service and it is getting to the point where they might let me out without ETF. I did not know that they would request the phones to be returned so I am trying to decide 1) if that's reasonable, and 2) if it is, then if it would be cheaper to pay ETF instead.
Tell them to refund your $200.00 dollars and you will be glad to return it.
I would be annoyed if on top of paying for the crap service they also wanted the phone back.

Agreed as well. If you sign a contract, man-up and fulfill your side of the agreement.
I totally do NOT agree with that. If you sign a contract and the provider can't provide what has been promised, the contract should be void.

What exactly did they promise? They specifically do not promise any speed, ive looked.
I agree with u op. Sprint speeds have gotten a lot worse for me as well. My phone is not usable unless I'm on wifi. Its ridiculous. BUT u did sign a contract and you had two weeks to try it out. Hope it works out for u.

The attitude of well it sucks but i did sign a contact that specifically does NOT make any speed promised etc is exactly why we keep getting screwed.
Considering I'm paying $108 dollars a month, $10 of that being for "premium data", it should at least WORK. On my phone, its unusable off wi-fi. No joke, sites can take up to 2 and 3 minutes to load and that is IF it loads. Normally something times out.
That is a load of crap, hence why I'm currently forced roaming on Verizon.

If it is so bad that you cannot even use it, you need to call Sprint, and keep calling them until they either fix it or they let you out of your contract because they are not living up to their obligation to the contract. Coming on XDA and crying about it will get you nowhere. This is a development website, not a ***** fest site about the provider. Take this **** elsewhere.
I'm going to stop this before it goes any further. Sorry your speeds aren't up to par (mine aren't either), but you will need to find another way than discussing here. Contracts are contracts, no way around it. Just call and call until you get the answer you want. This will turn out to be a war and we do not need that here as we have enough of that already.

WE have been duped by Sprint people. Go to their website and you will notice the announcement of the iPhone 4Gs. You can even pre order it. This privilege was not given for the Samsung Galaxy S 2 ET4G.
Why...was this you say...it's obvious that Sprint knew it had made a deal to buy a **** load of IOS devices to secure this deal with Apple.so they didn't promote the galaxy ET4g. Now they have a big announcement tomorrow. They are going out of their way to let you pre order the iPhone as well.
Sad, and yes I feel they used us to get this deal, by canceling all perks, while giving us crappy service. My Photon has a red circle and no service, and I don't have a ET4G yet. Service has been terrible most of the summer all over NY and in mid town NYC.
If service was being interrupted to better service I may stick around, but not getting signal, failed messages, and paying for it and no credit with lies is unacceptable. Not being able to pre-order the phone I wanted because they made a deal with Crapple is also unforgivable. Price isn't the only thing that matters in a business relationship. It's I pay for service and expect to have it when I want it, not when you decide to give it.
Hell I was told by a customer service rep that I should be happy because I have had a lot of usage on my line. I then said yes that is true, but when I need my service to work it failed to deliver....I missed important calls. and meetings with people because of failed service.
People were telling me when they called the phone rang 3x's and hung up no message was able to be left. Others told me that they would get a network busy message please try again later. One rep verified this condition of calling me, and could not get through. The phone rang 3x's and the line just went dead when they called. I have been to tech centers, and have made many battery pulls, and software reboots, and finally I was told that there was a net work issue and they did not know when it would be cleared. Now when I call to talk about it they put me on hold no music and never come back to talk.
I just don't see it getting better, and when the next generation of phones IE Prime or what ever hits Verizon, and this is not cleared I am gone. When I feel I have to beg for service, or a credit for not receiving service after paying my bills for 15 years, and at one point having a $300 a month phone bills for business it's time to go.
My bill analysis shows that I average 240 msg a month, and average about 2g of data a month, and since I use my phone mostly for calls a Verizion 69.00 phone plan with 10 data, and 10.00 for data equals what I am paying now. So if this doesn't clear with the loss of perks I am outta here.lol
My service is better than ever...by far too. I never saw over 8Mbps download speed in Los Angeles on 4G and now....

Enjoy the larger bill on Verizon. It fast and rather reliable
Life is too short to complain on services you are not happy about. Great thing about America is that we have three major carriers
The sprint network can't compete with Verizon in "most" areas,
Can I have your phone when you leave? I've got a line with no phone....

When sprint cancelled premiere the writing was on the wall. It was on your august bill statement. In addition, sprint raised the admin fee by 50cents which invalidated every contract. Also on your bill statement.
Then sprint raised ETF from $200 to $350. Then they changed 30 day phone trials to 14 days. All this in september.
I am here on this board with an E4GT because of these changes - I had to get my final premiere upgrade prior to 10/2/2011. Otherwise I was fully planning on just waiting another month for nexus prime.
Now the E4GT has serious radio issues. Like OP, I had calls go to voicemail for hours at a time. Others have LOS, dropped calls, no signal bars, phone refuses to roam, etc.
Sprint's CEO said that 54% of sprint customer churn is due to not having an iphone. Thats a pretty hard fact to not pay attention to.
It is clear sprint is putting all eggs in one basket - the iphone basket. Sprint has lost money for 15 straight quarters. This will either save sprint or ruin sprint.
I've been with sprint 10 years now, and im no iphone fan. THe writing is on the wall: We'll let you keep your android devices and stay on our network, but we really don't care about you now. Of course I knew all this over a month ago and I was still willing to sign a 2 year contract in september for the Epic 4g touch. That was before all the LOS issues arose.
We'll see what the next 2 years brings. But the days of customer loyalty perks, retention plans, etc are clearly over.
I just switched from verizon to sprint, so I can give you a good preview of what to expect.
First of all, the service is top notch, and the lte speeds were incredible - I regularly got over 20 mbps in my area, many times close to 30. Of course, keep in mind that their lte service is fairly new, and at the time they only had 3 expensive phones that could use it, so that will likely change as more people upgrade and the network gets saturated.
So why did I leave this awesome service? Price. Everything across the board is way more expensive - service and phones. I paid $50 more for a Droid Charge than I did for my E4GT, and that phone isn't even in the same league. For our family plan with unlimited text, only 700 minutes, 2 data plans and 2 other phones, it was $230 a month. Our kids wanted smartphones too, but to add 2 more data plans would have put our bill up to $300. I'm not broke, but not rich either, and that cost is pretty hard to justify.
Also, keep in mind that all those policies Sprint just changed are the same policies Verizon has - 14 day return, $350 etf (even after being way overcharged on the phones up front), and no more New Every Two program.
The only carrier I've found with good pricing and great coverage (in my area) is Tmo, and I almost jumped to them, but no way in hell I want to risk being an att customer again.

Amen. I am tired of flipping on Roam Control and dealing on 1x every time I enter a building. What good is unlimited 3g if it is slow as molasses, and 4g which is spotty and hardly ever works indoors? At this point, I am off contract and if Prime comes to VZW and is not full of bloat I may be gone.

I missed getting calls with 4-5 bars in mid town Manhattan, and people told me the phone just rang 3 times and stopped ringing with no option to leave a voice mail. Others were told to "try back later network busy". This can only get worse if iPhone is coming. Hi there,
I noticed you'd said you used around 6gb for months...
How many months did you get away with this?
Also, did they NEVER send you a letter/call you telling you that you were roaming a lot?
You'd think they'd give you a heads up.
One other thought... Do you think you could call them and ask them to not terminate you? Basically say something like, oh i only roam while at home, can you send me an airave so that I don't roam at home (at the office i get great service), something like that?

12 months is a good amount of time.
Were you consistantly downloading around 6gb a month (on roam)?
I suspect if you just used this on your phone for normal activites (streaming pandora/web searches/google maps/nav etc...) that you'd probably be good to go.
I only ask because I have HORRIBLE service where I live and found the 01337 prl to be 1000x improvement as far as speed (60681- 10kb/s if lucky, 01337-mod 120 kb/s).
-RR
I'm surprised they don't look into where you're roaming and figure out why it's roaming so much.
if roaming because of PRL(They see great Sprint coverage where you roam) - warn you about it and charge ETF.
If roaming because of no sprint = cut service off as was done to OP.
What if you want to renew with them? Do they add you to some sort of black list?

I don't understand why anyone is acting surprised. This is clearly outlined in your contract that if you use over 50% of your voice/data per month roaming that your account will be subject to termination. The fact that they allowed you to get away with it for a year while using far more data roaming than the average Sprint customer does on the native network is nothing short of amazing. The massive bill that you have racked them up in roaming charges from Verizon should be grounds for them to sue you, to be honest. Sprint can see your PRL, and forcibly changing your PRL to roam 100% of the time should be grounds for termination with ETF. This ruins things for the rest of us as the revenue that could have gone to expanding/improving our network is now being used to pay off the massive debt incurred by people abusing roaming privileges.

I don't think sprint gets a bill each month for X number of kilobytes people roam.
This is why they have signed roaming agreements... They pay a flat fee and users can then roam (no addl. cost to them).
Correct me if I'm wrong...
But I will say that it's unacceptable to run a speed test on Sprint, get only 10kb/s if lucky, flash a verizon prl and hit over 120kb/s and not feel like you're getting ripped off.
Every time I call sprint Data techs (they open a ticket and eventually tell me all towers are working correctly and there is no problem with the network)... Very disappointing.

Well if you want Verizon speeds, then you can go on Verizon IMO. While I love the fact that Sprint has low prices and I'd LOVE if they actually made them into decent speeds, jumping on a different PRL and getting terminated will just be worse int he long run since I don't want to pay for verizon service.
Wow, I honesty don't remember ever seeing anyone confirm that they were booted for excessive roaming. I never change PRLs and hardly ever roam but thanks for letting people know.

thank you for your presence here on XDA
i'd like to take a minute to mention 2 things.
1. in a contract that takes longer than ONE (1) minute to read, there is no such thing as "clearly stated" and I can't vouch for your colleagues encouraging people to read them. the contract gets highlighted in a couple places and it's a "sign here, here 'n here sur!"
2. there's a clause in federal law where if party B agrees to not do something under contract with party A, and party A does not enforce their contract within X time frame (never knew how long but would love to know), party A has then waived their right to file suit.

I don't use unlimited data anymore. Ever since I got a home wifi router, I use less than 200MB data a month.
I pay $75 a month for the cheapest, employer discounted plan with Sprint.
It seems like ATT would offer $40 (cheapest phone) + $20 (300MB data) - employer discount (I don't know how much). So, I'd be paying a much lower monthly charge with ATT.
Or so it seems. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Plus, I'll be getting One X (s4) just after it was released, enjoying a new gen phone.
Your thoughts?
Sounds like a no brainer.
Sent from the Delta Quadrant using XDA Premium App
Sounds like the smarter move to just go with ATT. You'd save a few bucks, which add up over time. I'd do it if you don't need/use the unlimited data.
I think it makes sense for you to switch if your cancellation with Sprint isn't too painful. If there are multiple phones on the account, multiply the cancellation fees.
Im a data holic but if you really dont use a lot of data then its a no brainer

I don't use unlimited data anymore. Ever since I got a home wifi router, I use less than 200MB data a month.
I pay $75 a month for the cheapest, employer discounted plan with Sprint.
It seems like ATT would offer $40 (cheapest phone) + $20 (300MB data) - employer discount (I don't know how much). So, I'd be paying a much lower monthly charge with ATT.
Or so it seems. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Plus, I'll be getting One X (s4) just after it was released, enjoying a new gen phone.

20 for 300mb of data? That's highway robbery. I hope you don't want to send or receive texts because that's another charge. ATT nickle and dime their customers to death. If you want cheap, and it's available, go with a prepay account or go with metropcs. From your explanation, it doesn't look like you're going to get insurance for your phone. You say you'll be getting a one x when you go there yet you don't want to use data on the network. What's the use of getting one of the top of the line phones with LTE when you want to only get the 300mb data per month option? To me, that doesn't make much sense. I'm assuming you have a e4gt now. Why don't you get a free basic phone from ATT and use your e4gt on wifi only? You can save another 20 bucks by not getting data on a free phone. I don't care what you do, that's your decision. Some people have left only to find out the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence.
Also how is call service? My friend gets all data no phone. And even data is comparable to everyone else.
When I had att my calls would drop in the same spots sprint calls would not even in between cities

I was with att for 8 years and refuse to go back. Customer service is horrible and I always had dropped calls. Plus they nickel and dime you for everything they can.

Just remember the AT&T One X has a locked down bootloader. I worked for AT&T as a Field Technician for several years. I had to constantly use my personal phone because of AT&T's awful network.
Look into T-Mobile if you really need to change. They should save you some money.
---------- Post added at 10:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:43 PM ----------
Also, I currently have a BB through AT&T for work and the signal is so spotty I just use Exchange on my E4GT. My boss has an iPhone that constantly drops calls.
As far as T-mo goes, I had them for 8 years in KC and dropped 2 calls the whole time. Maybe look at an unlocked GNex for 399 and go with one of their pre-paid plans.

In all honesty, every US carrier sucks. I've used and sold every major post-paid carrier except US Cellular (although I've yet to hear anything good about them).
AT&T doesn't need you, and they'll make sure you know that when coming to them with problems. Their coverage is shoddy, the network goes down frequently and their bills are loaded with unexplainable fees and charges.
Verizon has decent coverage but they suffer from network congestion. Their phones are priced way too high and they lack services for the price paid. They also look for any and every reason to charge you additional fees or kick you out with a termination fee.
T-Mobile has terrible coverage and an awful call/text network (need to send texts a dozen times to go through). Their prices are great and their customer service is okay. Decent selection of phones. Great choice for someone who doesn't text, use a lot of data or travel.
Sprint has pretty good coverage, but data speeds are pretty bad. Even corporate management makes jokes on a daily basis about it. They originally had fantastic plan pricing, but are slowly getting more and more like big red by adding on fees, tweaking discounts to rake in more cash and subtly changing the ToS to impose artificial limits on the term "unlimited". I firmly believe that the only reason Sprint's customer service was rated #1 is a 50/50 split between customer care lying to the customers and store reps guilt tripping customers into giving only perfect scores on surveys.
Seeing as Boost and Virgin will be picking up Sprint's WiMax network, I would see no reason to stay with Sprint were my service actually costing me anything. Funny that my phone is free yet I still catch myself thinking up ways to weasel out of my contract.

I've rarely done surveys. I block their phone number when they call too. I love when my gf is a smart ass towards them. Csr: Can you say I helped you resolve your issue today? Her: I don't know, I'll have to wait and see if it works now. I'll sometimes feel like being a troll and score them the lowest marks.
Sprint 3g in my area is some short not even 3g !

I suppose all the carriers are like that. In some places they have good or acceptable service, and other places its horrible.

More like....airwave robbery. YEEEEAAAAHHHH.
But seriously, if you aren't taking full advantage of the unlimited data and the competitors network in your area is better, I would definitely switch. Personally, my data speeds are so terrible I don't even bother using my phone off of Wifi. Yet my girlfriends AT&T SGS2 hauls ass pretty much everywhere she goes.

I said this all the time to my SAR, when he started being a **** about CSAT averages. It is easy to brag about it, when you are padding and stuffing the stats. It is such a snake oil salesman tactic, and I encouraged my customers to answer honestly. I will never beg for a five.

My sprint phones been roaming for months. I expected Sprint to boot me but they have not. I was hoping they would, the data simply doesn't work right for me. I've even tried leaving torrents running on Verizon 3G Roaming and still nothing.
I would love to stay with Sprint but we have only WiMax here in a small area which I'm outside of unless I go downtown and the 3G is a joke. A high speed test for me is 30kbps on a good day. Using Verizon's PRL, I got up to 800 which was better then nothing.
Sprint won't boot me because I'm a 12 year customer and my bills always paid on time. I have my account setup for an auto payment via my debt card and recently I noticed I was billed like $200+ a month in overage because I went over my 450minute plan, roaming. I had no idea they billed you minutes if you were roaming even when its cell to cell.
I called them up, complained about not knowing that and they credited me back ALL the overages for like 3~4 months and they got me on a unlimited everything plan. I even told them my phone roamed 24/7 and maybe I should just buy out my contact and find a new provider. The manager I spoke to said basically if I don't care about the roaming, they don't care and they were not going to let roaming be an issue for them to terminate my account and that sooner or later the service WOULD get better. Then he offered me another $200 dollar credit to stick with Sprint and wait it out.
I definitely can't complain about the customer service!
However, that does me no good when the data doesn't work. Webpages time out, steaming audio does NOT work off WiFi. What is the point of unlimited if it doesn't work?
I just picked up a ATT Galaxy S3 and the 3g data is insanely fast. The LTE is amazing too.
I was just going to keep both phones active and we what happens with Sprint this next year but carrying two phones sucks and I really only need my Sprint number.
I ported my Sprint number over to ATT today.
I know this causes my account to close. What can I do to avoid paying a full ETF fee? Do they pro-rate? I only have 9 or so months left on my contact. I will be happy to go back to Sprint if they work out there data issues at a later date when my ATT contract is up if they don't rape me over this ETF. Again I was a customer for 12 years and like 4~5 years ago everything was good, even with the data. All these smart phones came and things went down hill. I stuck around and renewed contracts because they kept promising it would get better. 2 and a half contracts later, it has NOT gotten better.
Has anyone had luck just explaining that to them? I'm hoping if I call them back up and say look, my phone was roaming 24/7, neither Sprints data or Verizon's roaming data was acceptable and I've been a loyal customer who is willing to come back if and when you guys fix the now network, if you dont screw me on my whole ETF.
For all the hassles I've had, I think they should waive it but I'm sure they won't
I just want feedback on what to expect and what I should do next. If they want to loose me forever over $250.00 dollars, whatever but I really liked Sprint until they got all these damn smartphones and their network couldn't handle it.
I'm curious to just ask, what happens if you don't pay the ETF?

Double post, sorry!
Yeah if I can't get them to work with me on the ETF, they are going to loose a customer for life. I'll pay the ETF fee and let them know I won't be back even after they fix there network speed issues. They might see it as they have already lost me since I've ported and I have an AT&T line of service now and they might think well, screw him, lets get that ETF money but I'm hoping when I call retention tonight after work when I have more time I can convince them to drop the ETF fee. They might not care though.
Given all the issues I've had with data, I think it would be fare for them to let me out of my ETF and I would definitely consider a return in two years if their network gets better.
My bills paid current, always on time, actually I'm negative -$40.00 right now. I've been a good customer. I rarely called to complain in 12 years. I never begged for credits, I've never threatened to leave. Hell, I wouldn't have left if the data worked. I could deal with not having 4G WiMax or LTE but the 3G was SO bad I was paying for something I couldn't use.
Did I mention how insanely fast AT&T's 3G and HSPA+ is? Oh and check this out so I had my first run in with AT&T's legacy 2G service today. 2G Edge they call it. The speeds tests were like 100 kbps BUT pages actually still loaded and things were browsable. I was shocked. Things just normally time out on Sprint's 3G and it's suppose to be faster then 2G Edge.
Anyway right now at this point, Sprint with Unlimited Data an AT&T with Tiered Data, I'd rather have AT&T now that I've seen how well it works. One neat thing is I keep getting these pop-ups all over the place that say "Welcome to AT&T Wifi Hotspot", then it jumps on some AT&T wireless Wifi and it doesn't take data. Seems they have them all over my city and where I work.
Congrats
If you want out of your contract pay your ETF, period. At 9 months it will be prorated but people like you trying to get out of contacts free and abusing roaming are why rates go up and perks get removed. Because of crap like this we're gonna end up losing unlimited data. You chose to enter into the contract, honor it. If you want out pay the ETF like everyone else or be patient and wait out the NV upgrades and drop AT&T during the buyers remorse period.

1. Yes the ETF is pro-rated, so should not be too much with 9 months left.
2. You got a phone for like $100-$200 on that contract right? Its worth $600 new. That's why ETFs exist.
3. Since you won't need that sprint phone anymore, sell it to cover the ETF. Boom, you are out of your contract and didn't lose much/anything.

Good advice here. Even using Sprint buyback program you get like $85 for E4GT.
ATT has its own service issues, glad its working for you though. Cell service quality can be extremely regional and I have switched carriers several times in the last 10 years after a move.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Even if you sell the phone for dirt cheap. As long as it covers ETF you should be good.

im trying to get out of contract cause sprint service sucks at my new address and also when i need it the most, around town, i just do not get any data even with full bars (signal). So im roaming on verizon, using about 2gb a day.
My question is, how long after i get booted from sprint can i start a new contract? Im comtemplating coming back to sprint cause im might move in the near future.

How do you force roam?

And they should have sent you a warning in the mail after about 500mb of roaming, hopefully they didn't find out the scheme lol.

If they boot you for excessive roaming its a 50/50 shot whether you get out without an etf. Just man up and pay it and cut your losses. Btw if you burn them they might not be so tempted to bring you back.

The whole reason for force roaming is not wanting to pay the etf. Its not fair to have to pay alot of money for a service ur not getting.. and I live in a city that has been one of the "test" cities for both wimax and LTE. So we got it first. But doesnt seem to do us any good if they say the antennas have been upgraded but the speeds do not reflect it.

It's not fair people like you are too cheap to honor your contract either. It's people who do sh!t like this thay cause prices for the rest of us to increase and perks to be taken away. Sprint has to make money or they can't stay in business. You signed the contract be an adult and honor it. Pay the ETF if you want out instead of finding a loophole to fraudulently break it. Hopefully sprint catches on to this soon and instead of dropping people etf free slap em with a collections debt after cutting em off and make em pay the etf AND roaming charges they racked up trying to get out.

I agree it is un fair to not pay the ETF. If you singed a contract you have to honor it. Sprint has always been fair to me when I was having problems before they updated to LTE and while they were updating they offered me to get out my contact free because they could see I was having real bad voice and everything. I told them nope ill deal with it so they gave me a 275$ credit my bill was 75 for 3 lines for 4 months and now I get 15+ download all day anf 1-5 up it great and im glad I waited out

There is no point in being booted on purpose to just come back later. If that's the case then just wait it out. If you really want to get it I would call them and tell them service really sucks and if they can compensate you. I waited out and now little by little Sprint is getting better and better. I just hit lte in my town and hopefully it will be announced officially.

I agree with the above.
Actually, it's what the OP purposes that has made it illegal to jailbreak/root phones, again, and try to bring them to another carrier. The carriers complained the government about how much money they loose because of it.
As for the OP issue, check your contract, but you might have some unlimited roaming; I forget if it's data or voice. On the same note, the bars you see, usually have little do with data; that's for voice. Thus, you go by the data connection icons--3g, 4g, etc. With that said, if it's really you may want to check out the Sprint coverage map. There is also another map that shows worked done and scheduled to done. I know for me, I get 3G and 4G around where I live. It's not everywhere. 4G speeds are no where near what I see other posts; I get in the 5 to 7mpbs down, and about 1mbps up on 4G, and around 1.5mpbs down, and .75mpbs up on 3g.
I would call Sprint and let them know your issue. It's possible they'll give you one of those 4G adapters that you can use at home with your internet. I'm not sure it's just for voice, or does data as well. I realize this may work because of lack of home internet.
Lastly, do you have the same issue inside buildings versus outside. If inside, it's possible that radio signal just can't penetrate the walls. Concrete is a notorious for this on the radio frequency that Sprint uses.

It takes several months and lately they haven't been letting people out ETF free. They usually send a warning letter then if you don't stop they charge you for the roaming per mb or they drop you and charge you a non prorated ETF so you pay the full ETF. Occasionally if there's upgrades in your area they let you out free or they just let the roaming slide and do nothing at all. Its a 50/50 shot either you're out free or still on contract or you're out with a nice bill and a hit on your credit report when you don't pay it. The majority of posts I've seen lately are you get hit with a bill. Probably due to the Softbank merger and the money they are pouring into the network, they have to recoup their losses or they won't stay in business. Not to mention you signed a contract agreeing to pay your bill or ETF and it states right in the contract roaming data is capped at 300mb a month or the majority of data used, voice is 800min or majority of minutes used.

Where in the world are people getting the idea that you get out ETF free?
Not ONLY will they put a collections record against you if you don't pay the ETF (and they will charge you), they can per the contract charge you for the roaming.
I've been dealing with slow data speeds in my market for almost 3 years now. I'm talking 300kbps 3G if I'm LUCKY! MAX I've seen is 700 and that's at 4AM on a Tuesday.
It's STILL the best deal in town for a truly unlimited plan. Verizon, ATT blow donkey balls with the ****ty 5GB cap or whatever it is. Then you've got T-Mobile trying to pass off HSPA+ as 4G...
I'm sorry, I use more data than that. Not all the time, and not alot more, but I average 5-8 a month... No tethering as my Note2 is my computer now. I'm on wifi ALOT, but still enjoy mobile streaming, and that just eats up bandwidth.
Either deal with it, or sell your phone and use the profit to pay the ETF like a grown up. Burning up Verizon's bandwidth is going to do nothing but add to a statistic for reasons why carriers either A) won't allow roaming or B) be the cause for some BS legislation making rooting a freaking criminal offense.

Because for the last few years instead of dealing with the whiny people who want to roam their way out of the contract sprint just terminated them with no penalties. Now however sprint's balls are finally starting to drop and they ARE charging at least the ETF and sometimes the ETF and roaming charges. Other times they just slap a charge on your bill for all the roaming and leave you contract bound. The roaming loophole has gotten a few out and then they post about it so every cheapskate that doesn't want to pay or wait but wants out has done it. Sprint's finally getting sick of it but they still aren't consistent enough to nail everyone. I think they should put the persons ssn# in a database and bar them from any telecommunications contracts and stiff em with prepaid only. Or have some kind of special plans for people who show a flag for weaseling out of the contract and block them from ever roaming so they're stuck not being able to rack up a bunch of charges for the carrier cuz they don't wanna hold up their end of the agreement. In my line of work you pull **** like this and we charge you with felony fraud and put your ass in jail for doing shady **** to breach your contract.

Maybe you should pay your etf and switch providers. You had 14days to cancel your contract free when you signed up that's more than enough time to figure out sprint doesn't work at your house. Or call and request an airrave.
I like to break stuff!
If your going to be coming back eventually anyway. Call and have your acct put on seasonal standby. Costs 8 $ a month but your acct will be in tact when ya come back. As for ETFs, good luck. The only exception to waiving it for now is. If your a Nextel user and they migrate you to cdma and you don't have any coverage. And by coverage I mean, no Sprint towers around. They use the coverage map to determine coverage not user experience. OR You recently moved to an area with no Sprint coverage, again no coverage per the coverage map.
The roaming situation does not work anymore due to contracts with other carriers for use of network. I can't tell you the last time I seen someone get booted due to roaming. Hell 90% of North Dakota is Off Network and we have several thousand subscribers up there.

Well I moved 2 months after getting onto Sprint. I got a good signal at my previous home but don't get a single bar at my new home.
I'm damn sure not paying 400 dollars to get out of the contract when I could stay on Verizon's PRL and wait until 4g hits.
If it ever does.
At this rate we won't get it until next year.
$90 bucks a month for data that barely works.
$90 bucks a month on a plan I thought was gonna cost $70, because that's what I signed up for.
Frankly, Sprint sucks.
Simple as that.
Seriously Sprint needs to step up their game...
