[Q] From Stock to Custom - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here is the phone I have:
My Current Phone: Sony Ericsson XPeria Play
Model: R800i
ROM: Stock GB 2.3.4 (at the moment)
Kernel: Stock 2.6.32.9-perf
Build: 4.0.2.A.0.58
It's un-branded phone that I got via eBay from a seller in Hong Kong.
I wasn't sure if the bootloader was locked or not so I followed the steps to unlock and got back that it was already unlocked.
I would like to install a custom ROM, but the 1st issue is that I can't install a custom recovery via X-Parts for some reason, I install the app, run it and click the install CWM and the app states that it installed OK but if I try to reboot to recovery via the app or via pressing any button on the phone while booting it just won't load the recovery. Any Ideas?
The only reason I want to install the custom recovery is to backup my current stock setup, but if there is a way to return to stock without need of a nandriod backup of the stock ROM then I can skip this part since I use Titanium Backup.
having said that, what would be the steps to follow to go from the Stock ROM I have to install a custom GB, ICS or JB ROM? (if there are any differences)

In case you want to return on your. 58 firmware, you can search for the .ftf of that firmware (just google it, or go under smokerman's roms and firmwares list under development section), download and flash it via flashtool, and your phone will be resetted to the original setup.
During this process, you will loose your data (so your apps and your apps' data), but if you have titanium backups, then you're good to go
Just search on the web if you dunno about flashtool yet

OK now I know how to go back...

Thanks CriGiu (also pressed the Thanks Button BTW) Now I know what to do if I want to return to the stock ROM... now what would be the steps to follow to go from Stock to Cutsom... would these be the correct steps?
1.- Flash a Custom FTF via Flashtool
2.- Flash a Custom Kernel via Fastboot
3.- Flash a Custom ROM via Custom Recovery
Is this correct or am I missing something?

Yup, and you should flash .79 firmware at the first step, in order to have some of the latest features, like the ability to have custom partitions layout (needed by kernels like Lupus Kernel by wedgess, or Turbo Kernel by Cosmic_Dan).
And another thing you should do is to wipe system and data via fastboot after you flashed the kernel, using:
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
This is needed if you wanna try kernels with custom partitions, or you'll be not able to boot into the rom, or the cwm itself

Remember those steps, it's alpha and omega in Play's flashing :silly:
You don't have to do all 5 step all the time, usually you'll flash ftf firmware file only once, you'll wipe system and data if you flash kernel with different partition layout, and most of the time step 5 is needed to flash custom roms
Just keep in mind that kernels can be only for certain type of roms (gb stock, ics stock, aosp, cm7, cm9 muiu type of roms)
Best way to know wich kernel to flash is to read ROM thread and see what recommended kernel is.

OK I have installed CM10 MaXeD but it reads "4. Install touchpad fix( GSM ONLY)" my phone is GSM but I can't locate this fix? anyone has a link to this fix?

[Q] How to install Doomlord's custom kernel

Hi
Today, ive taken a big step to root and unlock my bootloader of my xperia play
ive switched from an iphone, so i still a n00b at this. i rooted using superoneclick, and unlocked my bootloader using the test point method (DRM, Track ID still working)
I would love to install doomlords kernel because i heard about overclocking. ive read through logesman's super complication thread, and it was a big help. so how would i install it? i know vaguely how to use flashtool. ive read about some wifi/bt issues so is doomlords kernel safe? also what is cwm and what does it have to do with kernels etc?
You can flash doomlords kernel 2 ways. You can flash it from fastboot using the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img" or you can use flashtool. There is no issues with WiFi or BT, you need to flash the extra modules in dooms thread from recovery after flashing kernel. CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery) is a custom recovery you get embedded in doomlords kernel. Recovery is an enviroment where you can flash new roms or modify your existing rom, you can also take a backup of your device, perform data resets and mount various partitions.

thank you alot how would i get into recovery if something happened and also how would i make a backup?
To get into recovery, power off device, then power on and start tapping back button until device boots into recovery, there is also an app on the market called "xcharge" that will let you reboot straight into recovery. To make a backup, just go to the backup option in recovery

[Q] Updating stock ROM without wiping?

guys, I am have stock 4.0.2 rooted with CWM, is there a way to update stock rom (when stock 4.0.3 comes out) without wiping data?
I know I could do all kinds of MyBackupPro or Titanium Backup, but still it's quite a bit of hassle especially I can't keep anything in Internal Storage, anyone got an idea on this?
Easiest way would be to go ahead and flash the factory recovery back rather than clockworkmod. If you are on stock now and are wanting to get the 4.0.3 OTA when its pushed than you really don't need clockwork. If you flash the factory recovery back that we will be able to get the OTA and not worry about a data wipe. Flashing the factory recovery will not effect your current root at all so you stay rooted.

wow, thanks, so, I'm assuming I could use the same tool (GNex Toolkit) to flash back my factory recovery, right? besides, what if I did flash a custom kernel (like Jame Bond), do I need to flash back that too? or I could just leave it and the OTA would overwrite the kernel with stock kernel?
thanks!
You should be able to use that tool kit or you can just use fastboot and do the following after downloading the proper factory image from google and extracting the recover.img as for the kernel I don't believe it will effect the OTA at all.
- copy the recovery.img file to the directory that contains your fastboot utility
- start-up a terminal/command session
- put your phone into fastboot / bootloader mode
- type the following fastboot command to flash the stock recovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
OP, your internal storage doesn't get wiped when flashing a new ROM.. The virtual SD card is left untouched.
Also I'm pretty sure you lose root if you accept an OTA update.. but you can easily reroot.

um. I am not so sure it would be the case for Galaxy Nexus, data wipe before (like my GS2) just means user data, but for Galaxy Nexus, last time i tried it wipe my internal storage as well. when I'm using the GN toolkit to flash 4.0.2 image downloaded from Google, it wiped my data and storage, do you mean there is a way to flash Google image without wiping for GN ?

I asked if it was possible to update OTA when your phone is unlocked, and with CWM.. The answer is "yes" if you have stock recovery instead of CWM....

great, while knowledge never have enough, my next question is "How could I manually flash (instead of OTA) stock Google image (in case 4.0.x got out) without wiping my GN?" (assuming I am coming from earlier stock rom)

Xperia S wont load! HELP!

i decided to unlock my bootloader on my already rooted phone to try out some new JB roms. I installed Sspeed kernel and RecoverX which was fine then I followed the instruction to install the latest PACman rom by wiping all the caches and the system in recovery before flashing the rom. Problem is I accidentally left out the flashing and went straight to reboot phone. NOW THE PHONE WILL NOT GO PAST BOOTLOADER ANIMATION.
I tried using flashtool to flash stock rom. The phone is connected in fastboot mode but will not flash! PLEASE HELP!
Many thanks in advance!:fingers-crossed:

To flash stock rom you need to be in a flashmode, not fastboot.
Ive done that few times just install any kernel via fastboot, then you will be able to go to recovery its just that recovery is kept in system partition, so you wiped all the system and recovery flash any kernel that has recovery build in, and you will be good to go

Xperia Arc Stuck in Loading

Hey guys! Today I rooted my device, installed CWM and installed a ROM onto my Arc device today. It all went fine but when I rebooted after the install the device seems to be stuck at the "Sony" logo. I cant seem to boot it into CWM (tried it couple of times). I'm new to this so does anyone know what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance
Did you unlock the bootloader? Flashed the right kernel? Explain a bit what did you flash and how.

I'm kinda new to this and I just did what the guide told me to do , which is the following:
For Locked Bootloaders: Root your phone using this tutorial, than install CWM using this app
Place ROM on SD-Card
Back up user apps and data. (Various apps available, search Google Play. This is a popular one)
Power off phone.
Boot to CWM (Keep pressing the Volume Down key after the Sony logo appears)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Mounts and Storage --> Format /System
Advanced > Wipe Battery Stats
Install zip from SD card > Choose Xperia Ultimate HD
Follow on screen instructions on AROMA.
After Complete Installation untick "reboot" and select reboot in CWM
Give the phone a good full charge, and enjoy your brand new phone!
Okay I suppose you flashed this rom and installed it with aroma installer. And you can't boot into recovery mode when logo appears (by pressing vol down button?)
Argh I had the same problem when using different rom with aroma installer and I couldn't boot in recovery mode. The main problem was not getting into cwm so I had to flash the stock rom (ftf file) back on arc using flashtool and I rooted the phone and unlocked BL again. Then I restored the previous backed up rom.
Is there any particular reason to have locked BL? You can do it with flashtool.
I don't know what the problem would be since I don't have enough experience with aroma installers, I just know the basics of flashing, installing and I can solve problems on my own arc when I f*** up something but I'm a bit confused here so you better wait for someone who has more brains than I do.

I just want to put my standard rom on there atm, can you link me to something that tells me how to do that?
Ok, so here's thread with stock, custom roms, kernels etc. here find the stock rom and choose version (lt15i or lt18i depends on which phone you have and where you're from) and download the ftf file.
Then go to this link where you'll get direct instructions on how to flash. It's really not that complicated. Just open flashtool, choose flashmode and browse for the ftf file, then flash it.
Good luck.
If you wish us to help you, at least tell which ROM you installed.
For a locked bootloader, flash the original TFT through Flashtool.
Root.
Install CWM.
Reflash ROM.
If your bootloader is unlocked, just flash a kernel with CWM included.
Mount your SD Card.
Put the ROM on it.
Flash.
Hope I helped you !
Cheers.

[Q] CWM

I want to try flashing the carbon rom and CWM is required as mentioned in the instructions. After going through the threads, I have found out that only older firmwares can flash CWM. How do I install CWM for phones with 4.3?

1. Download flashtool
2. Download carbon rom, and open the zip file, extract the boot.img to your desktop
3. Turn off your phone, and hold vol up while plug the usb
4. Your phone supposed to be on fastboot mode (blue led)
5. Click on lightning icon, and then select fastboot mode... After that choose flash kernel via bootloader and then open boot.img
6. And you're done !
Before that, you need to unlock your bootloader
