My kindle has been doing this thing where the battery will randomly jump from a healthy percentage to zero, displaying an exclamation mark, and then reboot, after which it will return to it's previous healthy percentage.
Does this mean the battery is dying? Or could it be a software issue? I've had it for about 18 months and I purchased it refurbished. Plus I use it a lot.
If it is in fact the battery, do I have any options as far as replacing it? I'm guessing it's no longer under warranty, especially since I rooted it and put a custom rom on it.
I suggest replacing it but, Kindle batteries only last a few months before they start pH*uck up.

I'll have to disagree with you on that. I have had my three Kindle Fires for close to two years now and I've never had an issue with the battery that wasn't brought on as a result of the ROM that was installed. Several other users have had the same issue in the past and it seems to be a bug found in some ROMs.
OP, I'd suggest you update your ROM or install a different one and see if the problem persists.

Ive had 4 Kindles, all with the same damn battery problem, which is annoying to me. But I don't know if I have had defective Kindles. All new and last a few 5-9 months.

Oh yeah, the charger is crap. It was poorly designed, doesn't seat very well and I've gone through four of them, I'm sure, because of this. The devices would "act" like it was a battery issue, but in the end it was just the chargers failing (I'm sure it causes serious wear on the mother board as well).
After purchasing the quick charger and black usb cable, I've never had an issue since.

ive been running calks roms ever since he released them for our phones and i have never had an issue... that being said, i flashed his latest 2.0.1a and was working fine up until yesterday... it seems that my menu button presses randomly for no aparent reason! i cleaned the screen to remove any smudges it may have and that doesnt help... do you guys think its the phone!? like i said the roms have been working fine! i even flashed it again just to check and no go...
Sounds like a problem with your phone unfortunately

also - search Calk's ROM thread for anyone else that might have the issue, a fix or replace suggestion.
Yep sounds like hardware, did it continue after a reboot? Sometimes a system reboot complete with a battery pull can fix little glitches like this.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Pull the battery a leave it for a few minutes, then put it back in and see if your problem goes away. It does sound like a hardware thing.
check out my post here

I've been getting the same thing and managed to catch my phone misbehaving on camera.
I am sure it's hardware as when the problem started for me i was on a stock room that I simply rooted. Thinking it may be something with the rom (like you) I flashed a whole new rom with a whole new kernel (blazer rom with the ek02). the problem persisted and thats the setup I was running when I shot the vid. yesterday I flashed the stock EL13 rom and kernel. same problem.
Let's compare notes and see if we can narrow down the list of causes.
1) it's not rom related.. but MAY be root related. thoughts?
2) I recently damaged my stock charging cable and started using a cable (samsung brand still) that I picked up from amazon... could that be the issue?
3) on the FIRST DAY when I bought my phone, i noticed that the screen goes haywire if I try to use it while its charging. this only happens on the stock charger. I was told by members of the board here that this was normal and dismissed it. could this actually mean that our phones were defective to begin with?
Lets here your thoughts.
btw. I'm having my device replaced on friday. if you have the equipment protection plan then it's free of charge.
As ironic as it is, i posted on this thread just to try and help and be it as it may my phone is now doing this now... its done it about 3 times and its annoying lol
Edit:I'm on blazer 2.0 with desperado and el13... but it did it on ek02 too so its not the modem

so far I'm thinking it's something to do with bluetooth, the headphone jack or third party cables.
anyone else using headphone or a tape adapter at the time this started for them? what about simultaneously while listening to bluetooth?

so is yours completely random or does it seem to happen only under certain conditions?
Got my new device last night. One difference ive noticed is that this one actually charges fully (battery shows 100%) even off of the charger. My previous device dropped to 99% as soon as i unplugged it.
The screen calibration still goes haywire if used while its charging.

I am using calks 2.5 with rogue kernel. my phone seems to have little lines moving up and down the screen. I just got this phone after turning in my other one because of hardware problems. just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this as well.
My girlfriends phone has been acting strange. Showing that it is charging when nothing is plugged in, beeping consistently, and instead of shutting down it reboots. We took it in to Sprint and they said it has minor water damage in the bottom half. No insurance so nothing they could do.
It seems like an easy fix if I can find the part. It would be the USB Flex Cable I believe and its only $10ish dollars on ebay.
The problem I'm having is that I cant find the USB Flex Cable for the sph-d710 just ones for the Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100.
I emailed the seller of
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=321003355943&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
this listing and he said "this should fit". I just want to be sure it is the same cable before I order it.
I cant find any tutorial so I'm just going to follow along with this
youtube.com/watch?v=aChzv3IzxsU
Video.
Any advice or tips on replacing the cable?
Is this the right cable for the job?
Thanks!

Was there any visible sign/ troubleshoot method to figure out it was the battery? Was the battery bulging and would spin?
Her battery is still flat so it doesnt seem like the lithium is leaking or anything.
Just trying to narrow things down before I spend money on a new battery.
Thanks for your quick reply
Edit: Also the water detecting sticker on the battery is still white so it doesnt appear to be water damaged.

You actually could get a battery cheaper off of Amazon than the eBay route your going. But I figured mine was the battery because I had a spare one to test with and as soon as I popped that one I realized it was the OEM battery and was failing with no physical signs other than performance and the fast discharge and random reboots. How old is her battery ?

Check the threads here a lot of people are having issues with the original battery. Seems they are all failing around the same time. But do a search on Amazon and read some reviews before buying a replacement battery but I personaly would recommended the 2 batteries plus wall charger for $20 its awesome you can use one battery while charging the other. Never have a dead phone again. Or just grab an OEM battery for about $5. Do you know any one that has a compatible battery to just test with?
One more thing you got this phone off of Craigslist is it rooted with a custom rom ?

Timing couldn't be better. After a few months of seemingly random reboots (which I attributed to software/radios), my GNex died today. Sitting on my desk charging (and nearly full battery at this point as I hadn't touched in a few hours), and I go to check my afternoon calendar but it won't turn on. Tried reboot with power+ volume, 3 fingered it for fastboot, pulled the battery, even swapped with a spare battery - nothing. Won't even go into ODIN download mode. The good timing? I bought this device 51 weeks ago - yes indeed I am getting a warranty replacement from Verizon to be here tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully it's a good one since will be CLNR. Odd thing is that there was no dying gasp, the phone wasn't hot (not even warm), and no indication of any melted or otherwise cooked parts under the battery cover. Strange.

Kinda off topic, but do you have insurance on the phone or does Verizon honor the manufactures warranty and deals with Samsung for you? I'm curious how the process works since I'm guessing you don't have insurance (like me) with the 51 weeks .

I don't pay for extra insurance, but Verizon honors the manufacturer warranty, seemingly without much question. The tech checked the purchase date on record and immediately arranged for a replacement device. I was on the phone all of 10 minutes to get things resolved.

They are real cool about it. Have you tried plugging it into a computer?
Mine did the exact same thing. Not even replacing the battery with a fresh one would work. I then plugged it in and the battery indicator came on. Then I got the dreaded OMAP4440 error in windows, but the phone booted right up and hasn't missed a beat yet

Tried plugging into PC without success. No lights, no battery charge indicator. Probably for the best. My wife's GNex is running smoothly, but about 6 months newer. Probably just had one of the early builds that was rushed due to the initial demand.

You don't realize how defective your phone was until you get a replacement. Previously had a hard time detecting NFC tags unless I hit the sweet spot on the phone perfectly; blamed the Otter box. Now I can pick up NFC tags in a flash. Bluetooth wasn't toggling reliably; blamed the toggle app. Now it works perfectly. Definitely had a bad phone from the start, and my CLNR was manufactured in July 2012 and certified in September; hardware version 10. Loving the Galaxy Nexus even more now!

rooted first gen. cant remember the exact rom used but i think it was an aokp flavor. anyway the battery died to the point that leaving it on the stock charger for days did nothing. so i read a whole lot on the forums and set everything up to do the usb shorting trick. did everything as instructed exept... i grabbed the charger and inserted it instead of the usb cable. nothing happened as you would expect. set everything up again and tried again several times. and nothing. screen and power button stay blank after shorting for up to 6 minutes. bricked? i think so but i figured i would run it by the experts before i sold the screen and other parts to my brother.
jtag maybe
im bumping this cause i havent found a solution and my brother said no to buying the parts. anyone have an idea of a possible jtag soultion? i saw where the riff box will cover the omap 4430 but i have never tried this before and im sure of any prerequisites for jtagging. anybody?
quick test: hold down power button for ten seconds, and plug it into the wall. anything happen? sorry, my expertise in the area you describe is zilch.

Negative.

You might be able to usbboot successfully if you replace the battery, but there's still a good chance that by using the wall charger instead of the USB cable during the short, you may have done permanent damage.
Thats what im starting to think... battery has been charged outside of the fire. Holds 4.0 volts so I dont think the battery has much to do with it. Id love to find someone with some jtag exp. I have none. All suggestions appreciated. And keep them coming if tou please. Thanks guys

Oh, well it's screwed then. Even without a bootloader or xloader, the CPU would sill be working. In your case, it's not doing anything through battery or USB power, so you may have done irreparable damage to the hardware.

I've had good luck with cheap eBay ones for $3-$5. (~$10 for 2 + external charger, shipped from China)
Originally bought a cheap 1800mAh for my Epic, but kept it around and am using in my E4GT (when the orinal battery "puffed" and wouldn't hold much of a charge) Recently added a "2200mAh" one and external charger. It's a tiny bit thicker than my 1800, but still fits under the stock cover. I havent noticed the "2200" giving any better battery life than the "1800" - both work well and I've had no problems.
This issue is happening to me too but seems to occur when I'm downloading something like an MMS or app, or even an image intensive webpage. The screen flashes to different brightness levels and then the battery would suddenly "drain" to zero, where the software tells me it's at zero, but with a little extra charge and a reboot, the power level will be where it was before shutting down.
And none of this occurs while plugged in so I'm reasonably sure it's an old battery, I'd just like some confirmation. What gave it away though? The flashing screen thing had preceded a loss of signal so at first (and for about a week or so) I thought that was what it was until I found this thread.

Thanks.
When I went to get a new battery, the guy pulled the battery out and spun it on the counter. If it spins, it's expanded, and indicative of being on its last leg or already dead. Of course, you could also palpate the battery and you will feel the bulge but the spin test is simpler, definitive, and more entertaining. Just posting in case someone else runs into this problem or a similar battery problem and come across this thread - try the battery spin test.
