Verizon GNex DEAD - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Timing couldn't be better. After a few months of seemingly random reboots (which I attributed to software/radios), my GNex died today. Sitting on my desk charging (and nearly full battery at this point as I hadn't touched in a few hours), and I go to check my afternoon calendar but it won't turn on. Tried reboot with power+ volume, 3 fingered it for fastboot, pulled the battery, even swapped with a spare battery - nothing. Won't even go into ODIN download mode. The good timing? I bought this device 51 weeks ago - yes indeed I am getting a warranty replacement from Verizon to be here tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully it's a good one since will be CLNR. Odd thing is that there was no dying gasp, the phone wasn't hot (not even warm), and no indication of any melted or otherwise cooked parts under the battery cover. Strange.

Kinda off topic, but do you have insurance on the phone or does Verizon honor the manufactures warranty and deals with Samsung for you? I'm curious how the process works since I'm guessing you don't have insurance (like me) with the 51 weeks .

I don't pay for extra insurance, but Verizon honors the manufacturer warranty, seemingly without much question. The tech checked the purchase date on record and immediately arranged for a replacement device. I was on the phone all of 10 minutes to get things resolved.

They are real cool about it. Have you tried plugging it into a computer?
Mine did the exact same thing. Not even replacing the battery with a fresh one would work. I then plugged it in and the battery indicator came on. Then I got the dreaded OMAP4440 error in windows, but the phone booted right up and hasn't missed a beat yet

Tried plugging into PC without success. No lights, no battery charge indicator. Probably for the best. My wife's GNex is running smoothly, but about 6 months newer. Probably just had one of the early builds that was rushed due to the initial demand.

You don't realize how defective your phone was until you get a replacement. Previously had a hard time detecting NFC tags unless I hit the sweet spot on the phone perfectly; blamed the Otter box. Now I can pick up NFC tags in a flash. Bluetooth wasn't toggling reliably; blamed the toggle app. Now it works perfectly. Definitely had a bad phone from the start, and my CLNR was manufactured in July 2012 and certified in September; hardware version 10. Loving the Galaxy Nexus even more now!

Car charging problem plus first random reboot

The phone has been absolutely rock solid since the day I bought it and I love it. Today however I was using Google Navigation with Bluetooth connected to a headset so I could hear navigation prompts and phone calls. The phone was plugged into a generic Motorola microUSB car charger that I've always used for tons of phones.
The sun was out and hitting the back of the phone so the battery app I had was reporting battery temp at 45 and above.
Anyway even though the phone shows the charging icon and says its charging it doesn't seem to receiving enough juice to charge the phone? The battery kept dropping and I can't tell if this was because the phone was so hot that it stopped charging the battery like my Incredible used to do or if I just need a more powerful car charger.
Then on my second leg of the trip the phone rebooted mid navigation. Started back up and has been working fine.
Anyone have any ideas or seen something similar?

Was listening to Bluetooth music and browsing a site and boom hard freeze and had to pull battery to get it to start. Only thing today is I installed nytimes. I'm going to try uninstalling it since I remember having issues with the app on G2X. Let's hope.

I've had random reboots, but I'm not at all sure what's causing them.
Also, the lockscreen will occasionally become unresponsive, but it seems to fix itself if I leave it for a while.
I guess we just have to hope for a fix in an upcoming patch.

Its common to run hot when using gps. Reboot was probably because battery too hot. Your phone did the right thing. Cool off period.

depending on the car charger & phone use, you'll get insufficient juice to keep the battery charging. i'm assuming your moto charger is a 'rapid charger', if not.. then i would suggest trying one out.
this one is pretty decent: Motorola P513 Rapid Car Charger
if that doesn't cut it then the next step would be to use a power inverter(what i use).. only down side is they are a bit bulky & can be noisey to.. but will ensure your phone gets charged up no matter what(gps use, torrent download, etc)
Thanks I ordered the Motorola charger. It was only 5 bucks on Amazon Prime. I hope that works otherwise its inverter time

That's bit a OTT, it got hot but not Nuclear.
I'm finding the GN gets hot just from using it with games/browsing.
The hot spots are on the back at the top, next to camera

i'm having constant reboots. this happened to the first GNex i had. it eventually wouldn't come back on. i even waited a good 12hrs and tested it again and it still wouldn't come back on. returned it and now the people i returned it to are telling me that it's fully functional, and now i have a new one that's acting the same. i guess it's going to die too and then i'll have two lemons on my hand. thanks a lot, Google/Samsung.
I've just had my first two random reboots today. Phone updated with the volume fix ota yesterday morning.
It reboots and then gets stuck at the android updating screen.
Don't know if it is a coincidence that this has started after the bug fix.
This morning I look at my phone to see that it has not only rebooted but the default, first-time welcome message is waiting asking me to log on using my gmail account, etc.
In other words my phone got wiped over night and I don't know why. I did install some phone tracking apps yesterday but removed most of them except for PhoneLocator which I ended up paying for.
So I've spent a few hours restoring things the way they were and right before I got to work the phone did a reboot but fortunately did not do a factory reset as it did before.
I am kind of worried now, I really hope this will not happen again.
Any thoughts? Similar experiences?
I had this "problem" with my Desire. In car, connected to a charger than I know works. Phone not charging.
Basically, as mentioned, the battery will stop charging when it reaches a certain temperature. And the OP mentioned it was a hot day. Plus being on the other side of the glass amplifies the suns heat.
Also a "good" charger is specifically one that has an output of 1A. I and others have found that charger with an output of 850mA and less definitely won't cut it for GPS duties.
The reboots... may be heat. May be something else. Does it only happen when the phone is hot?

just so you know you are not alone - i'm having the same problem with the galaxy nexus i got yesterday. it was constantly rebooting, also showing the "upgrading Android" dialog at startup.
this continued after factory reset and no additional applications installed.
i returned it, waiting for one from the next batch.

Got my GN Thursday morning. Since then I've had 3 Reboots.
First was actually a full power off while streaming music via Subsonic, plugged into a car charger about 10 hours after getting the phone.
Second was after viewing some flash enabled websites, so not too surprised there (reboot).
Third was just after installing and setting up Google Wallet about 45 minutes ago (reboot).
Wow years of lurking and apparently that was my fist post.
GNex Reboots and Freezes
I am in the process of exchanging my GNex replaced by Samsing. Within 48 hours after getting it in the mail (no rooting or anything, just stock) I was getting random reboots, apps crashing, black screen (unable to wake) requiring battery oull. By the next day it was just continuous soft reboots (starting at the boot animation, not the "Google" screen).
Called Google who transferred me to Samsung who said they need to repair and not replace the device quoting 7-10 days. I called Google back and they said Samsung should have offered to replace the device and the Google rep called Samsung back and got them to replace the device (apparently there's a 14-day window that the device can be replaced).
It was a Friday morning and I was told someone from another Samsung department would contact me within one business day to arrange shipping the replacement and getting my credit card details for the advance replacement. On Monday I still hadn't heard from anyone so I tweeted at @samsungsupport with my ticket number saying i was still waiting and received a call within minutes from a Samsung rep arranging the shipping of the replacement. May be a coincidence, not sure.
At this point, I was quoted Wednesday for a total of 5 days without a phone, unless it takes longer. Unfortunately I only recently switched to a GSM carrier and don't have a spare SIM card phone so the delay is inconvenient. Hoping for a better experience with the replacement device and I wish there could have been a next-day replacement strategy for DOA units.

You need a minimum of 1 amp for the car charger, most chargers only provide 750 mA. Also check the charging method, some of the cheap chargers will not trigger AC mode (Will show as usb charging) and in those cases, you are only getting 500 mA, if this is the case, you might be able to trick things by shorting out the two data pins on the USB cable.
I picked up an iPad car charger, the older ones are 1 amp, the newer ones are 2.1 amps. Toss out the crappy proprietary cable and put in a standard micro usb. Plenty of juice for this thirsty phone.

Screen flickering and phone turning off? READ THIS!

If you're reading this, you're probably having a problem with your phone screen flickering rapidly for a few seconds, then the phone shutting off. Fear not though, this is not a result of a bad flash!
CHECK YOUR BATTERY!
Yes, that is right, your battery. Feel for any bulges, set it up on a countertop and look at it from the side, spin it on your counter, something.
If it is bulging, call Sprint or Samsung immediately, because your battery is defective, and you don't want it exploding in your pocket!
Now, the reason I'm posting this, is I've searched the internet thoroughly, and have not found one single bit of information on the screen flicker problem, but reading a bit up on batteries, I came up to this conclusion, and I was right, so I decided to alert my fellow XDA members. Stay safe guys.
Also: If your power button does not turn on your phone for one push, then you may have a problem with the power button;the power button or anything else not working, other than charging and screen flicker is not related and you may have a defective phone.
I'll update this later with how it went at the Sprint SAR Center, but I definitely need a new battery.
Edit 9/1/12: Had to send battery to Sammy since the Sprint corporate store wanted to charge me $45. Battery should get here in about 2 weeks. D:
Edit 9/2/12: I visited a Sprint store yesterday to try to get my phone checked out to see about the power button, and it's definitely broken. I had to talk them into replacing the phone rather than fixing it. I also got a white one, too.
Oh thank God, happens less than an hour after full charge, screen flickers, then LOS, then dies, if i reboot, it says battery fully discharged. Then as soon as i plug it in, it's fully charged again
EDIT: Took to Sprint, problem confirmed, spun the battery on the counter, replaced no questions asked

By any chance do you have insurance? I took it to Sprint, and they told me it was $45 since I had no insurance, so I kindly declined. ._.

This just started happening to me a few days ago, but my battery isnt swollen.
I just came to the general section to ask if this happened to anyone else. I just requested a replacement battery Sprint yesterday. Not only did I experience the screen flickering and constant shutdowns after about 1 hour, but my battery was bulging so bad that it barely fit in the phone. I hadn't thought about opening the phone to check the battery until the phone started smelling like it was burning.
Woke this morning to find my wife's phone untouchably hot after being plugged in all night and the battery is bulging. Sprint better replace this no questions asked.

Well, not exactly like that, but something similar. Anyways, I called Samsung, and they were nice about it, asked me to ship it in, and they pay everything, and also went ahead and ordered an OEM battery and charger from Amazon, but I'm screwed because they're both taking at the very least a week.

This is wild. I thought there was something deteriorating within my ROM over the past few weeks. It's been getting more sever. Just before typing this, my battery had died and now it will boot to the lock screen and freeze. I noticed things like the battery icon and service icon completely disappear and reappear. This is all new on type of the other issues described in this thread. I'll be calling Sprint first thing in the morning.

If you have any way of checking if the phone is also messed up, do, and if it is, you should go out and exchange the phone for $35. My power button is completely dead, which I thought was somehow related to the battery, but it wasn't. So every time I want to turn the phone on, I gotta pull the battery, and it starts up for me, since I guess the button is stuck. I got mine September 20th of last year, so my upgrade isn't till July, and I'd rather pay 35 dollars and use this thing till Monday, than to use it till July or even worse, not have a phone at all while Sammy figures out what to do with it. Plus, the guy at the store hooked me up with a white one.

Yep, took 4 days to get there, and 7 days just to look and a bulged battery and another 3 because they "want to make sure" is fu**ing frustrating lol. Even a pack of amputated monkeys can see the battery being defective ...
after updating to FH13 through Kies, whenever I have GPS on and may 3G data on my phone would do a quick restart to the 4G logo bootup. all this within 15 seconds. it is not the full restart where you see the Samsung Galaxy S2 in the beginning the and 4G logo animation.
this seems to happen only when my GPS is on and maybe 3G data, had occurrences with 3G only not 4G.

How many times has your Nexus been replaced? + rant

I got my first Nexus about a month ago. About 3 days ago the charging port kicked the bucket. I couldn't charge it at all. I called Verizon and got a warranty replacement. Cool. Came in about 5 hours ago. The very first thing I noticed upon powering up the replacement was that it had moderate/severe screen burn-ins. As well as random spots all over that don't match the color/tint of the rest of the screen.
So at this point I'm pretty much heated. My first nexus was a CPO (certified pre owned) as well. I got VZW to swap my Stratosphere for it.
Anyway... I figured I'd download a ROM to install until my next nexus comes in (#3) because I hate being on stock. I get a low battery warning so I plug it in. I notice IT'S DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AS MY LAST ONE. Any little bit of pressure or movement of the charger causes my phone to lose connection and stop charging..... I tried my original charger. I tried my brothers Droid 3 charger and even the brand new charger I bought when my first nexus started having issues. None of them work! So I tried all of those chargers on my brothers and dads phone and they work fine!! No amount of movement disrupts charging on their phones at all with any of my cables. I tried every combo of charging cable/phone as well as using different power outlets on different breakers. I couldn't believe I got a phone out of the box with the exact same problem I'm trying to return my original one for. This is ridiculous!!!
"Sir, all of our certified pre owned devices pass a 100-point inspection" *cough*BS*cough* If you actually put this phone through a 100 point inspection then somebody needs to get fired because it should have failed the moment he looked at the screen. It's that obvious. Unless they don't inspect the screen - at least when it's on (which makes no sense to me).
So I was wondering if you guys had similar experiences? I knew I was sending my replacement I just opened up back - literally seconds after I powered it on.
Anyways now that my rant is over, how many times have you had to get your nexus replaced before you got a good one?
That sounds like bad luck pal. My own GNex is a GSM one I got a couple of weeks ago pre-owned and it is running fine. It does seem a bit of a lottery regarding the build quality. Does the LTE version tend to have more issues than the GSM?

Suffering from lose usb port issue here =/ crazy how my almost 2 year old G2. Has taken falls, drops, tumbles, etc and is working flawlessly compared to my few month old gnex that I baby the hell out of. Only cosindering the next nexus is its htc manufactured.. my first samsung phone and I kinna regret it. Smh

I have no idea. Only ever been with Verizon. I just can't believe I tell them that my charge port died so they send me a replacement with a dead charge port. Plus a faulty screen. Double whammy lol. #3 is being over-nighted to me free of charge. I'll post back some more results about that one tomorrow. I wish I had a camera to take pictures of the screen of my replacement. I'd use my other nexus, but as I said I got it CPO which means I had to buy a battery seperate and only have 1.

Had my GSM Nexus for two months and haven't had any problems with it, but I've been worrying lately about mot USB port since so many is having problem with it.
Sprint Nexus since March, got a little burn in near the top of the screen, but haven't needed a replacement yet
No problems here. Received mine in January, bought one for the wife in June and all seems to be well.

I had the charging port issues with an older nexus.take a small jewellers screw driver and gently pry the small wafer tab you see a hair away from the wall its close to, that will fix it just be very gentle and pull the battery first. I had the same issues until I did that.

never. still on launch day nexus. Dropped it a few times... once into the toilet. Still great.

I tried that. It worked only as a temporary setup for my first one. Every suggestion on this forum has been tried and failed for me, sadly.

Bought mine begining of July, had issues charging sent it in and came back two weeks later with new port. Strangely before the repair it would charge to 100% and I usually could get around 3.5-4 hrs of screen time and 16+ hours before needing to charge, now with the new port only goes to 92% and screen time 2.5 hrs and about 12 hours sometimes less, haven't changed my usage, really wonder if they borked my battery somehow during the repair. Mine was manufactured march 2012.

Has your nexus gone bad? Suffered from a damaged speaker, fried CPU, broken screen or similar? Here's the thread to share your exprerience.
Personally I bought my Nexus, brand new on September/October 2012. Sometime on August 2013 a got caught up in an endless bootloop, even odin or similar tricks couldn't save the day so took it to the repair centre (Smartec Greece) and had it back after 4-5 hours with a new motherboard. Pretty fast- problem solved, didn't have to pay something, even though I never got to know which part actually gone bad.
That's about it. I also have replaced stock battery with a new one as the old one was draining faster than the speed of light, no matter what rom I was on.
So let me hear ya!!!!
The goddamn USB port issue, couldn't charge my phone, until I poked that little bugger in there to rise it up a little, created such a hassle

You were lucky, after a year and a half of use my USB finally took a sh*t completely. Luckily the insurance I use has no deductable so I had to fire up my old Incredible 2 for a few days while I waited for a replacement. I'm so glad we have nandroid. All I had to do is unlock the bootloader on my new device, put TWRP back on and restore my nandroid. No hassle really.

The same happened to me but I let the battery drain and then charge it for a bit to eneter recovery mode to restore from a back up. Why didnt you do that? I think your problem wasnt just a bootloop problem.
Powerbutton becoming faulty.

Trashed my charge port one morning getting out of bed with a bad hangover..Forgot my phone was plugged and snapped the port right off :crying: I just bought a new charge port flex from ebay for $10 and replaced it myself in about 20 mins

Last year my Nexus dropped into the sea, but luckily survived
My Nexus's battery was damaged so from phone service I got a new one in 2012.
Then My Galaxy Nexus got a screen burn-in ("ghost image") and in the phone service they changed a screen, but my Nexus got that screen burn-in again..
Everything have worked so fine and I never used any other kernels on my Nexus, than the stock ones by Google and CM's kernel and ofc. my modified CM kernel., I have tried some custom kernels, but I never liked any custom kernel. My Nexus has scratches on its cases but screen has always been clean and good. :3
I'm really happy, that my Nexus looks like a new one, but only that screen burn in is annoying
I am on handset number five; one blown earpiece, two cracked screens and the last one had the interface between the digitizer and the motherboard come loose. I was able to wedge some paper between the battery door and phone body to make it work until the replacement came in. Thankfully I got the phone when beat buy had them for free and ponied up for the service plan.

Have mine for 2 years... only problem is an oled burn where the notification bar clock is... the green and red oleds have less brightens on lower brightenes levels... apart from that everything ok.

I'm past the 1.5 year mark with my gnex and the only issue I have so far happened when it fell from my recliner while connected to the charger. The micro-usb metal piece on the cable got bent from the impact and since then I get a weird buzz/rattle when the phone vibrates. Had to reduce the vibrator strength on fancy kernel to get rid of that specific annoyance.
This has been the case for about 8 months now and the phone is still charging fine. Why I don't know is if this is a symptom that will eventually lead to the dreaded no-charging issue that some have shared here.
Had to change whole charging strip. Gnex was showing frequent charging/discharging and battery would drain within an hour!

1.5 year old phone. Volume-up button doesn't work, and hasn't for some time. To increase volume, I have to press volume down and then move the slider up on-screen. No big deal. Also had the USB port break a couple of months ago and had to get it changed. Otherwise it runs fine. Still on stock 4.2 ROM, I keep the GPS switched off most the time, and also have all the lower-level Google sync stuff disabled (screw Google), and battery typically lasts a day and a half of average usage.
Had the Galaxy Nexus since release day and it served me well. It was fast and I only went through a few. Last October I got my Note 3 so I retired my G'Nex, but now I'm going to be using it as a MP3 Player that I can just leave in my car vs using my Phone all the time. Just looking for a Rom that turns it into the Android version of an IPOD touch.

Has anyone noticed any hardware defects with their models yet?
my raising volume button seems to get stuck pretty often, like maybe 30% of the time. That is, it fails to raise the device volume. The button to lower volume seems to work fine though
Wow, do I gave the only defect?... Does anyone know the replacement process / policy if I didn't purchase the sprint protection plan?
Haven't noticed a single thing - everything running absolutely perfect and definitely haven't had that volume issue.
I'm not sure what you do if you didn't get insurance but if it is an actual manufacturing defect I'm pretty sure you can go through Samsung themselves. (I've only ever used Asurion or Squaretrade myself never through the actual manufacturer)

My battery cover doesnt snap all the way on...REALLY annoying for my OCD...i need to try and call sprint and see if theyll let me swap just the back i dont want a whole new phone.
Also using the cable it came with i only get USB charging...using my old Note 2 cable i get AC charging...the actual charger works but the cable doesnt seem to. I must have gotten a crappy package. At least the phone itself seems fine lol

All of my hardware and software keys just stopped working minus the home button and volume up button. Becoming really frustrating especially since ive only had the phone for 6 hours.
Hiss in video recordings
I recorded some video last night with no problem. Today, I discovered a hiss in all new recordings. I restarted the phone to no avail. Will be exchanging the phone for a new one tomorrow.

Darn, that's slightly frustrating.. I was so excited and happy for this phone, even this lemon is so difficult to part with ;P
Beautiful device though, Samsung really hit it out of the park this time!
I am having an issue with my Wi-Fi. It will not stay connected. I have to reboot the phone just to get it to come on. Then when it comes on it will not stay on if I am not using the phone. Other than that it works fine.
If I charge the phone for an extended period of time, it will not wake. I have to perform a battery pull to restart it. I have tried with the quick charge settings on and off, and I have tried with the included Samsung charger and a Palm charger. I'll probably take it back to Sprint for a replacement.

I have a white model from Tmo and it's absolutely perfect so far. I would imagine that anyone of you having serious issues with your note 4 should bring it back to your carrier right away without delay. At least call them.

Just a reminder. Do a *#0*# test on your phone before walking out the door. That won't catch every defect, but it will catch quite a few.

Dialing *#0*# on ant Samsung phone puts the phone into self-test mode. You can test almost every sensor, button, and speaker on the phone. It's fantastic for testing the AMOLED screen too. The only thing I don't think it tests are the microphones.
My white one has a bum barometer sensor. It reports a value, but it's stuck at 29.870 in Hg. Doesn't budge at all from that value. Best buy is going to exchange or when they get more in stock. Other than that, no gap, no issues whatsoever.
Damn, I'm having a lot of trouble exchanging my phone.. All the sprint stores I've went to the past 3 days have all said they are out of stock..
Has anyone else exchanged their phone at sprint yet? Should have bought my phone f4om best buy :/ don't like dealing with sprint

Call Customer Service and have them send one via 2 day air. I just got my phone today in two days. The stores here are like yours; out of stock.
