rooted first gen. cant remember the exact rom used but i think it was an aokp flavor. anyway the battery died to the point that leaving it on the stock charger for days did nothing. so i read a whole lot on the forums and set everything up to do the usb shorting trick. did everything as instructed exept... i grabbed the charger and inserted it instead of the usb cable. nothing happened as you would expect. set everything up again and tried again several times. and nothing. screen and power button stay blank after shorting for up to 6 minutes. bricked? i think so but i figured i would run it by the experts before i sold the screen and other parts to my brother.
jtag maybe
im bumping this cause i havent found a solution and my brother said no to buying the parts. anyone have an idea of a possible jtag soultion? i saw where the riff box will cover the omap 4430 but i have never tried this before and im sure of any prerequisites for jtagging. anybody?
quick test: hold down power button for ten seconds, and plug it into the wall. anything happen? sorry, my expertise in the area you describe is zilch.

When you plug it in, does the CPU get hot?
Negative.

You might be able to usbboot successfully if you replace the battery, but there's still a good chance that by using the wall charger instead of the USB cable during the short, you may have done permanent damage.
Thats what im starting to think... battery has been charged outside of the fire. Holds 4.0 volts so I dont think the battery has much to do with it. Id love to find someone with some jtag exp. I have none. All suggestions appreciated. And keep them coming if tou please. Thanks guys

Oh, well it's screwed then. Even without a bootloader or xloader, the CPU would sill be working. In your case, it's not doing anything through battery or USB power, so you may have done irreparable damage to the hardware.

In that case, keep trying to usbboot. Users rarely get it on the first shot, so keep working at it.

Sitting at the laundromat, watching a video that I downloaded thru the facebook app, all of a sudden the screen goes black. Thinking it went into sleep, I pressed the power, no response. I press and hold the power button, screen is still black, but this time it gives a haptic feedback. I press and hold again, it does the same thing. I removed the battery, waited a few secs, replaced the battery, and tried to power on, I still get the black screen and haptic feedback. Every time I press and hold the power button, screen remains black, no leds, with haptic feedbacks. I never dropped or water damaged the phone. Seems I may have received a defective unit. Production date on my box reads 09/28/2011. This phone is returning 1st thing in the morning!

This is what I discovered today......after the fiasco, I left my phone turned off while charging overnivht. Started my day off with a full 100% charge. I use bluetooth with my car stereo, and occasional talking. 2hrs into my day, I noticed that I still had a complete charge. Few hours more pass, still a complete charge after web browsing and everything else. I found this to be kinda odd considering my usage. I decided to reboot, and lo and behold, after reboot, my battery indicated less than 50% charge! With that being said, leads me to believe that actually my phone wasn't really bricked last night. More so, my battery gave the wrong readings, and while I'm watching videos, thinking that I have enough juice to do so, actually it didn't, which lead to the sudden shut off. I think my battery completely discharged without me knowing it.

Hello there folks. I've had my Desire Z for 2 years and it always worked great, it is rooted with S-OFF, HBOOT and all, I was running Andromadus Mimicry 1.5.0 ROM. It was working flawlessly as usual, but yesterday I picked it up and it was turned off, I figured it needed a charge so I connected it to the charger, but to my surprise I didn't get the usual orange led, as a matter of fact I got nothing. I waited a few minutes but still nothing. I tried to connect it to the PC but again, nothing. So far I tried different cables, different batteries, chargers, tried the car charger, but nothing seems to work. I tried using ADB to run a Fastboot command but that also didn't work, it hangs forever on <waiting for device>, and ADB doesn't detect it. It really seems absolutely dead. It doesn't show any sign of life, no light, no vibration, NOTHING. Has anyone ever seen something similar? What can be done to resurrect it? I didn't do anything different, it was all of the sudden. I appreciate any help, thank you!

Hey, thanks for the reply! While researching what could be the problem I came across this eMMC issue, I was hoping that wouldn't be the case, but unless someone else sheds a new light on the subject I guess that's probably it. I even looked for a new eMMC chip or Vision mainboard, but couldn't find them anywhere. I guess with the price of a brand new Desire Z at U$90 - 120 nowadays it wouldn't be worth it anyway, I might as well just buy another one, as a matter of fact I probably will, as I love this model so much, but I really wanted to save the one I already have, that way I would have a spare.
You can buy a new Desire Z and keep the old one as a restore device who knows maybe some day you gonna need a touchscreen or a LCD panel or both?
Just keep it

Yeah, I thought about that too, I'll probably need it sooner or later, I had to exchange the led flash once. Who knows, maybe the eMMC could be fixed with JTAG, but that RIFFBox is so expensive. If it weren't I would certainly get one as it's useful for all kinds of phones. Hey, thanks for the reply again, I really appreciate the input. I hope the thread goes on and people keep giving new ideas.
Chances are it isn't an emmc issue, as the emmc issue just stops the emmc from being written to, so the phone will show some signs of life.
It will be some sort of hardware issue though, seeing as it's not doing anything at all.

Thank you very much for the info Nipqer. Is there a way I can tell what kind of hardware issue happened? It really doesn't show any signs of life, no lights, no vibration, no orange led while charging, nothing. Aside from that the phone looks brand new as it has always been well taken care of. Is there something I can do or try out? Thank you.
Did you try a new battery? Or an external charger? It is possible battery is fried or USB port is dead, a new battery and external charger could help figure that out.
Also you can try taking out the battery, plug into PC via USB while holding down both volume buttons, phone should vibrate a bunch

Yup, I got 2 extra batteries besides the stock one that came with it, one of them is a Mugen Power Battey and the other is another original just the same as the stock, tried many different chargers, 4 other wall chargers, different cables, car charger, etc. Doesn't seem to be the problem. Tried to do as you said about taking the battery out and plugging into the PC via USB, still nothing, not even holding both volume buttons down or any other buttons... Hell, I even tried holding ALL of them. Still no deal.

Well, I hate to point out the obvious, but apparently that is not the case.
Did you wear some type of non-conductive gloves when you were doing this? handling circuitry with bare hands is a big no no. It is very possible that you ruined the device simply by touching it.
Here is what I would do (not anything but troubleshooting to pin point a possible problem really):
Warranty the thing.
Good luck.

How do you know the replacement screen is not bad itself..
have you tried connecting it to the computer and getting into download mode or seeing if the phone is ACTUALLY Working..Also a bad or cheap lcd could have shorted something out if you are sure you did not do so replacing it..
Sorry for your luck but it sounds like you need another note 2 phone for some testing. or RMA THE LCD and try another .

I'll start by saying I don't have a whole lot of specifics on the issue as this isn't currently my phone. I'm looking to buy one and the seller said that one morning the phone would sporadically not respond to touch and by the end of the day wouldn't respond at all. She said that sometimes if she repeatedly locks and unlocks the phone it will work for a short time before becoming unresponsive again. She says there has been no water damage and she hasn't done any sort of software updates recently. She did say that a couple weeks before the issue started that it fell off her night stand but didn't seem to effect it at the time.
My question is has anyone run into this issue before? If so is it a software issue that could be remedied by doing a full wipe back to stock software? Or is it a hardware issue such as a bad digitizer or maybe something as simple as the digitizer cable coming loose?
I did some googling and the only thing I found about this issue was a result of flashing the wrong ROM to the s3. Any help would be appreciated.

Forgot to mention it but I pulled the back off and checked the ribbon cable. Removed and reseated it as well as made sure it wasn't corroded. Still a no go but on the bright side I found a nicely priced "blemished" screen on eBay so in a couple weeks I should be rocking the s3! And I'm glad to be in these forums. If blemished means lightly scuffed just use some glass cleaner on it in a small coat, buddy of mine did that with his iPhone looked brand new.
& yep lol, soo many choices for ROMs and kernels for this phone, gotta love it :good:
So I got bored and disassembled and cleaned the connections on the board as well as the connections on the back of the screen. After reassembling it I get response from the touch screen again although its as though there's a phantom finger making random movements on the screen.

Looks like you've got ghosts
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
So I guess it was just a bad digitizer. Just got my new one and got it swapped out and I'm good as new! Though if anyone else is looking to replace a screen and aren't too brave when it comes to taking a phone apart I would suggest getting a screen that has the frame already attached to it. Removing the screen from the frame and reattaching is a bit tricky.
So, I dropped my s3. The screen is still perfect and the back case didn't even come off. So it wasn't a big fall, about 3 feet.
But my phone doesn't turn on anymore.
I took out the battery and plugged it back in.. the phone auto boots for 3 secs then turn back off..no response after that, until I repeat the process. .
Any idea of what's wrong with my phone ??
Thank you!
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Free mobile app
First look very closely over the screen. Its possible for the digitizer to have cracked but not the glass I assume. But even the tiniest nick on the edge will stop the display from working. Also id open it up and make sure all the ribbon cables are still seated. Maybe one popped loose.

thanks doc. .. you helped me before and your advice worked in the past .. time to take it apart and see if anything got unplugged.
So,
The battery is unplugged. I hold down the home and volume down, and plug in the battery, the phone boots into Download mode for 2 seconds then shuts off. For that analysis my screen is plugged in. Correct?

Im really not sure tbh. It could very well be the impact broke something loose, or just plain damaged one of the internal components.

Took the phone apart.. its actually easy compared to other phones. I made sure all the ribbon cables aren't loose and they weren't.
Still experiencing the same problem.. phone boots as soon as plug in the battery, stays on for 3-5 secs then shuts off.
Also, the phone is auto booting without the the power button. I even removed the power button and the phone auto booted.
Any other ideas?
