[Q] Push Gmail Delay and Random Reboots. Help? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi everyone,
I have a new issue for you guys and maybe you can help me. I cannot find any information on my push delay issue. I am wondering if it might be related to random reboots and whether I should return my device for another. Anyway I have a very large delay with gmail push notifications. My galaxy s3 instantly gets emails when they arrive, but my nexus 7 can take anywhere between 10mins to 30mins to get that same email. Same with marking it as read if I have seen it on my phone. It happens whether it is sleeping or screen on and wifi connected the whole time. I can be browsing the web and my push email will not come. Is anyone experiencing this issue with theirs? As I am typing this my nexus has still not seen an email that came in 15 minutes ago to my nexus - Last gmail sync was 20 minutes ago with screen on and off periodically.
I am updated to JSS15Q and am not ready to root the device yet. My SGS3 is on PA 3.99 and works flawlessly with push. On another note, I am getting random reboots during sleep or use - just like many other people as well who have returned their devices to get one that doesn't do it. It is very annoying - considering returning the device soon, but I've already installed a bunch of things on it.
Thanks for the help!
Edit, it has now been over 12 hours and Gmail has not synchronized. It shows yesterday afternoon as last time of sync, while the account itself shows synced in the morning. The only things that synced in the morning are calendar and app data. 12 hours later I have like 15 new emails on my phone and Asus transformer, but nothing on the nexus. All sync is on in Gmail and settings. Wifi was on the entire night and I was downloading something too overnight, which finished. I kept the screen on all night so the tablet couldn't sleep. No emails. Any ideas?

Regarding Gmail: did you try removing the account and setting it up again?

Thanks for the reply. It seems I have somehow sorted out the issues. For fixing gmail, I did a factory reset and just put everything back on as well as all of my gmail accounts. Seems to be working with push ever since! However, I still had random reboots. I seemed to notice that they happened mostly when I was using chrome beta, so I froze chrome beta and started using chrome. No reboots for 209 hours and 40 minutes now! Going strong although I shall *knock on wood*. So if anyone else has either of these issues I recommend trying to remove chrome beta as it fixed reboots for me and possibly also doing a factory reset - even battery life improved after that with same apps reinstalled.

[Q] Android mail eating battery! Please help!

This may have been addressed, but a search didn't reveal anything exactly like this. Please bear in mind that I'm an Android newbie!
I bought the Incredible 2 last Thursday. No rooting, nothing weird, still mostly stock. This morning it's running very slow, screen transitions jerky, etc. and even text based email takes minutes to open. I messed around in settings, and notice that Mail (com.htc.android.mail) is using 48% of my battery, more than twice what the screen is using! I force close, and the phone speeds right up, lag is gone, screen transitions smooth but, minutes later, Mail comes back on line and the phone goes to crap.
I've used more that 1/2 my battery in two hours. I notice that the uptime is 1 hr 58 minutes, and the awake time is 1 hr 44 minutes, so I assume that the mail app is also preventing the phone from sleeping.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!
This may sound obvious, but did you try resetting your phone? Turn fastboot off (settings > applications > click fastboot so it is unchecked) then kill mail, and before it has a chance to restart hold the power button, then shut down. The restart option might work, but for things like this I prefer a good old fashioned power down, power up. Anyways, power your phone back on by pushing the power button for two seconds or so. Then see how it goes. This is an error that I have not heard about, but a reset is a universal problem solver. If it doesn't work, tell us what kind of email accounts you have set up (pop, imap, exchange) and how many, and also the settings for checking the mail.
Hopefully the restart will fix it though.

Thanks! My limited Android knowledge told me to try a restart, but I actually didn't know how on the Incredible 2!!
Anyway, the problem went away for a couple hours, then came back!
I use a POP server for my work email, and gmail for personal. I really don't understand this, as nothing has changed since yesterday, but the phone has slowed to a crawl!
Try a third party email app. I don't know of any offhand as I only use gmail on my phone. My gmail account checks my imap account on another host so it's all together, and I can distinguish which account is which on the emails through gmail tags.
Umm I think this will require a factory reset, because you can't uninstall stock mail nor freeze it without root
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
You can temp root, and freeze the stock mail app if that is the way you decide to go. Instructions found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068544. But that sounds more like something faulty with the software, because like I said, I have never heard of that happening before. I would take it back to Verizon, complain incessantly, and point out that you could have fixed it yourself if the phone had an unlocked bootloader
Do you have them set to check mail constantly, push, or are they on a delay? Can you use imap for work instead of pop? I have four accounts set up on mine, including an exchange, and three imap accounts. The fact that it just started happening leads me to believe something broke in the system, though. A factory reset and re-flash may indeed fix the problem. Also, do you have good 3g coverage most of the day? Check your time without signal under battery status in settings. Click on cell standby and it should give it to you. Or are you using wifi most of the day?
Sorry for the rambling questions, just writing stuff out as I think of it. Trying to narrow down what the problem could be.
Thanks, again.
I'm using the mail settings that the school requires, so can't change them. Currently set only to update when the app is opened.
I generally get good cellular reception at work, and I have wifi as well. I've been trying it with or without wifi today, with no changes. I'll try a reset and see if that helps.
I just mentioned trying another app because I don't see these problems and I do not have the stock mail app configured in any way.

I've had the Inc 1 and now the two. I've always turned off the (auto sync) this would require yyou to open your mail and manually refresh or of you use the sync all widget it works that was as well. Seems to save a ton of battery only drawback being you have to manually check it. Ie. No mail notifications. Just a thought maybe you want to give it a shot.
Thanks, everyone. Using a combination of all your advise, the problem is resolved. I factory reset the phone, then installed only my gmail account. This worked fine all of yesterday, so I finally got off my butt and learned how to use gmail to read and send my work email last night. That seems to be working well. I'm still getting email notifications, but gmail is only using 3% of my battery, as opposed to the 48% that Android mail was using.
Still don't know what caused the trouble, but I'm very pleased with the solution.
Thanks again!!
Email battery problem also on Nexus S
I have also the problem that the standard email is consuming the biggest part of the battery - mostly over 50%. I use an exchange account and a pop email, but both not synchronized automatically (manual sync interval), and I do not use them so often - max. one sync a day...
Anyone an idea how to improve this?

K-9 Mail
I had also the problem (as mentioned above) with the standard android email programm and a so related short battery life. Since I deleted all email configurations there and installed K-9 mail client instead, battery life improved a lot. Before I could use my phone about 2 days, now it lasts for around 5-6 days...

[Q] k9mail push (imap idle) inconsistent

I am having some weird issues with k9mail client with push mail not working consistently. Does anyone else have this problem?
Random times during the day, mails do not get pushed to me. I can't really discern a particular pattern of when it works and when it doesn't so I haven't been able to "reproduce" the problem at will. I've also turned on debugging and have been looking at the logs via aLogCat.
For Example
Let's say I start watching the logs at 1:00pm and this was the last time anything was logged by k9mail. Then I get an email to one of my accounts at 1:10pm (I found out via desktop mail client) but this mail does not get pushed to me so I don't get notified and k9mail is still not logging anything so there's no activity by the mail client.
1:25pm comes around, which is over the 24 minute imap idle refresh time configured but I still don't see any mails being pushed to me.
Sometimes the mail finally gets pushed, sometimes it doesn't get pushed for over an hour.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions?
I am currently confined to using k9mail because it allows me to reply to emails received at one account with another account without using gmail's "Send As" feature.
Thanks!

At the times you're expecting the mail to push through, is your phone on or idle? Do you notice any discernible difference between the two?

Yes, the phone is on but it doesn't seem to matter if it is on (screen on) or idle (screen off).
This would be the sequence of events:
1) The phone is on but screen off (idling)
2) I notice that I received an email through my desktop PC
3) Look at my phone, LED is not blinking so it has not been pushed the email
4) I turn the screen on and unlock it, still is not pushed
5) I opened up the k9mail app, still not pushed
At this point, I can turn the screen back off and eventually I would get notified but when this problem is occurring, it takes too long for the mail to get pushed to me and this problem really defeats the purpose of push mail.
Thanks for the reply!

Seems like you're not the only one with this issue. I would completely remove the application, wipe cache on the phone in recovery (power + volume up if not rooted), reinstall and set it back up. If that doesn't fix push, set it to poll every 5 minutes.

I've definitely seen reports of this issue. Really not sure if it's the OS, phone, or k9mail.
Here's a k9mail bug that was reported that I added onto with logs:
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3847
If anyone else is having the same issues, please add a comment so that it get some more attention.
Could this be the same issue described in detail here?
code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=4347
This issue has recently appeared on my phone as well. I had been using K9 for my work email for over a year on my Evo 4G without any problems. About two months ago I picked up a Samsung SG3 (Sprint) and installed K9 on there as well, with no problems whatsoever. All of a sudden around September 5th, I started noticing that I would get my desktop notifications before my phone would receive my emails, which I couldn't recall ever happening in the entire time I had been using K9. I had not make any network changes, system changes, or anything like that. It just stopped working as it normally did one day.
Long story short, I've been having the same issue as you described in the OP. I've tried installing and uninstalling multiple versions of K9 (4.119, 4.200, 4.201, 4.304, 4.306) with the same results.
My work email is hosted by GoDaddy (yes, they are terrible) and as you can expect, I tried getting some support from them and they said that everything was working as it should. I've also tried sending the K9 devs a few emails regarding the issue along with a bunch of catlogs, but not one of them has responded to me. Oh well, it was a great app when it was working.
Oh, and for what it's worth, I had tried setting up 3 different imap email accounts on K9, my work account hosted by GoDaddy, a Gmail account, and a Yahoo account. The Yahoo and Gmail ones pushed emails immediately, whereas the work one would only push at the "refresh idle connection" intervals.

Nexus 5X Gmail not syncing

Hi,
No matter what, gmail emails will not automatically be synced unless i manually refresh the gmail app. On my old Nexus 5 and any other android device I've used the gmail app will always send a push notification whenever i receive an email but that does not happen on my N5X. I have enabled all the sync settings etc, compared them with the N5 to see if i had any setting unticked etc but they are the same yet my new 5X doesn't sync.
Anyone know any solutions?

Working okay here. Doze mode can stop Gmail notifications, so if the phone is left for 30 minutes or so and isn't moved that might explain it. Generally the notifications then ping through when you turn on the phone, or they just arrive late at the next scheduled wake-up event that Doze controls.
It might just be a registration problem at Googles side with their cloud notification system, it may sort itself out, have you tried restarting the phone?
Are Hangout notifications coming through okay?
Regards
Phil
Check your settings in Gmail. I had checked do not notify me for every message at one point. But to check your situation unchecked that and am getting a good sync
I am experiencing this issue. Gmail just stopped syncing a week ago. It doesn't even check for new emails when I open Gmail app. Only Gmail has sync problem. Other apps including other Google apps don't have any problems. I'm on OnePlus One CM13 nightlies.
Thank god, I'm not alone. This has been happening for a week plus, for me. It's ridiculous. And only on my 5x. Tablet is fine.
I am not having any issues with syncing of Gmail. I am having an issue with getting notified from any inbox that's not my primary inbox (like social and promotions, etc...). When i open gmail and before it refreshes it says i have new emails. I have made sure I have my label Notifications set correctly. This started around December 24th.
Also just noticed this as well I have Light Manager installed and when i get a new email the light will blink informing me I received a new email, but there won't be any notification on the lock screen or in the notification bar. Hopefully Google gets this sorted out

Yeah, it's been flaky for me lately the last couple of weeks. I read on 9 to 5 google about a bug around the do not disturb feature, I wonder if this weirdness is related. I'll be fine for a while, then i'll go hours without syncing until I manually sync. Not sure what's going on.
I fixed the same problem by uninstalling greenify and rebooting.
There's a bug ticket on this:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=197805
Star or comment and maybe they'll take the hint.
Been happening to me now for quite some time, even before 6.0.1. Neither Gmail nor Inbox are auto-syncing.

Same problem, only with Inbox. I have to enter the app in order to get it to sync. Starred the bug @plwalsh88 has posted.
Hi guys,
I had the same issue back when I first got my Nexus 5X. I fixed it eventually by factory resting the device. Been great since, no issues. I suggest you guys try the same if you want a possible solution.
Cheers,
Nath
That's what I was thinking... Wonder what rom you guys are running because everything is fine on pure stock. Gmail and everything else syncs without problems.
You may want to go back to a nightly from before Xmas and see if that fixes it. Or read the change log to find out what changed.

I am pure stock. Haven't even rooted or anything. Just taken the two OTAs I've received since I bought the phone back in Oct, putting me on MMB29K now. Waiting to see if anything comes out of the bug ticket before factory resetting... Shouldn't have to do that on a pure stock, unmodified phone.

Me neither. But I'm just suggesting it in case you desperately need it fixed. Otherwise feel free to wait and see if Google bother to fix it.

I've had issues with Gmail for over a year and nothing fixed it, I had to use inbox to get any notifications since then. I did notice that I haven't had any inbox notifications in the past week, but my connection hasn't been stable until today so I didn't think about it.
with my nexus 7 close by, i noticed as well that my 5x wasn't syncing gmail properly while having the exact same settings. what seems to have done the in my case was deactivating the battery-optimization for gmail. i have had it like that for almost a week now. mails once again come throug without me entering the app and i have not noticed any difference in the apps energy consumption.
So a couple more comments on this. 1) I read somewhere I believe on the bug post, about turning off the doze feature for GMail might solve the problem. I tried that along with turning it off for Nine(I use that for work Exchange email) 2) I see the problem with Nine also, so it's not just GMail. I'm thinking maybe Doze and ActiveSync aren't playing nice together. I've turned off Doze for both the email applications as of yesterday morning and so far, no issues. Anecdotal unfortunately at this point as It's not a simple repeatable problem to know for sure yet if it's really fixed.
I'm having the same issue. It's definitely the Nexus 5X and not gmail as I have my Nexus 7 with me and it notifies me fine (in fact, that's how I know I have emails most of the time). Not sure what's going on, but it's really getting annoying. I'm desperate enough to try a factory data reset soon.

Gmail not syncing properly since system update

Hey guys,
A few weeks ago my Verizon Samsung Note 4 received an OTA update - nothing major, I believe it just added some security patches and removed some bloatware. But since then, my gmail app has not been syncing properly.
The sync is definitely still ON, because it does sync sometimes but it's very sporadic. But it's not syncing as soon as emails come in, and often it will take a couple hours for new emails to show up (which I can see if I'm home near my computer). Some mornings I'll wake up and my emails from overnight will be there, and some mornings, nothing will have synced from overnight.
And as far as I can tell, there's nothing specific that finally prompts it to sync (in other words, turning my phone on, or simply opening gmail doesn't make it sync. It just seems to be totally random).
Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!!
Dude I though it was me.. I been having the same problem. Anyone else having this problem and figured it out?
Same
I got the 5.1.1 update 8 days ago and exact same issue. I've been through 3 factory resets both using previous backups and starting fresh. Also used troubleshooting fixes from other posts... clearing data, clearing cache, turn sync off/on, removed/added Google account, etc. Nothing so far
Same issue here...
Strange. I've also taken the update (actually, if memory serves, there were 2 updates within a couple of weeks) and aren't experiencing the problems you all are seeing. I know, that doesn't help you any.
Hmm, well it does help to hear from others that are having the same problem, so at least I'm not driving myself crazy trying things that won't fix it! Thanks for the replies.
And of course, if anyone has any solutions, I'd still love to hear from you too . . .
I know this also is not much help, but I've sent an email to the Dev but no reply yet...
Same here in note 3 and since updating gmail app my gear 2 no longer gets notications from gmail even when gmail DOES show up on phone notifications.
Leave it to Verizon to screw everything up after finally making some big progress with the first 5.1 update. That update fixed SO MANY issues I was having with the phone. I was ready to switch to a new one, but the update made me want to keep it. Then I wake up to see this latest 2nd update was installed without it asking me, and now I am having major issues with things like Gmail not syncing, but also answering a phone call is horrendously bugged. I will have to swipe the green answer button like 8 times before it actually picks up the freaking call. My wifi will randomly stop sending and receiving any packets and my signal will just drop out completely, airplane mode doesn't fix it and it requires a hard reset. Like holy hell Verizon, what the actual freak do you guys do to your phones...

Gmail Syncing

Is there anyone else having problems with Gmail not syncing? I have searched and saw issues with the Nexus 6p but it keeps happening on my 5x. Is there a known workaround for this?
-Thankx
I'm not having issues on my 5X, but I use Inbox instead of gmail. However, read the following article. There are issues being reported.

Gmail struggles to sync on my phone as well. I don't know of a way to fix it yet.

Same here. I don't get notified of new emails until I open the app. Haven't found a fix yet
Glad to see it's not just me. I've cleared data/uninstalled about 10 times and couldn't get it to work. Seems to sync fine on my Samsung Note 8.0
Maybe the Gmail update today fixed it. I actually just received 3 emails in a row without opening the app and manually syncing.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
disabling battery optimization for gmail can help with the problem, but even that doesn't get rid of it. however i as well noticed gmail notifications being more reliable with th update currently being rolled out.
I just sent a test email and i got it immediately. Maybe it's working...
Its been better for me today. Its still spotty though.
Mine is spotty also. I often miss gmail for hours so today I updated the gmail app. Now my gear 2 no longer gets gmail notifications! It gets the others but gmail is most important. Really pisses me off. I checked settings and gmail is still checked under gear notifications and gear still allowed under security and gmail notifications and sync still checked and working.
I just installed inbox and that is working perfectly. I have updated my Gmail and it still isn't working for me.
I am using an unread counter that only supports gmail (novalauncher/teslaunread), i read the email in Inbox but Gmail still thinks there is an unread mail HOURS later. Annoying.
Also spotty. The one that I tested worked fine, but a different account didn't update until many hours later.
Wow, glad it's not just me. Been driving me crazy today trying all sorts of things to fix this. Will keep an eye on this here for updates.
I have an LG G3.
No improvement here on my LG G3 running Marshmallow. Is this fixed for the rest of you?
My moto and sammy both still have the problem.
This has been a recognized issue for a couple months now. Google announced on 10-Feb that they were rolling out a fix server-side (i.e. not a system update or app update) that should be reached globally within a week. Since then, however, there has not been one single report of consistent Gmail/Inbox notifications. It's gotten quite ridiculous.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Did some more testing and found what's causing me the issue, but it's very strange.
I cleared data and cache in gmail and started fresh. Everything works fine. As soon as I change days to sync globally to more than the default 60 or if I got into manage labels and change the inbox specific sync to ALL (which is what I want, I only have about 70 messages in there), gmail stops syncing completely. If i go into accounts->gmail, the last sync time never updates again after I change the days to sync in gmail.
Anyone else want to test this?
My sync is only 30 days but I still have the problem

If I change to to something else and then back to 30, it doesn't fix it. Have you cleared gmail data and cache and confirmed it doesn't sync without touching any gmail settings?
