I plan to return my nitro tomorrow before my 14 days is up. It's rooted with superoneclick. Should I bother trying to unroot? Would hate to brick it without a recovery rom available.
It won't brick you phone, I've done it several times already.
In my personal experience the clerks don't bother check the condition of the software on the phone, they turn it on (or not) and that's it.
And besides, if it's bricked, well, there is always a wall charger to blame
P.S.
What are you getting instead?
My mind isn't completely made up yet. I want to love the nitro but the occasional lag, poor scrolling, and battery life is what's ruining it for me. RAM manager has made a difference in app switching. I've been watching you guys closely hoping for proof of an unlocked bootloader as I'm sure another rom or hardware accelerated browsing in ics will make all the difference.
If i ditch it, ill probably just go back to my iPhone 4 for a couple months and see if the at&t version of the nexus gets LTE. I love this display, but don't know if I want to commit to the phone for 2 years. Will let you know what I decide.
Thank [email protected] Unroot worked without any problems. I decided to return it and wait and see what you all can find in the next few weeks. I played with the skyrocket and nitro side by side in the store.. what a difference. The skyrocket is buttery smooth. I would jump on it in a heart beat if there weren't those huge pixels staring me in the face . The HTC Vivid actually felt like a decent compromise if compromises had to be made. Nice qHD display and pretty smooth. I still believe the Nitro has the potential to be the top dog, but not in it's current state.
Keep up the good work. I'd love to see new software on the fantastic hardware.
The display on this is fantastic. I can feel your pain as it's not as smooth as the Skyrocket. I'm not a huge fan of the super amoled - especially compared to this. I have switched to the Zeam launcher and it has made a pretty nice difference. I'm hoping there will be an interim release by LG/AT&T to speed things up and fix some of the other minor bugs.
And most importantly hoping the dev successes continue and we can get some nice custom ROMs going (especially ICS).
I said this in the unbrick thread as well, but really I must emphasize my phone is much smoother with the Korean rom I flashed. I think I feel confident proclaiming that when ICS or hopefully CyanogenMod come to the Nitro HD, this device will be astounding. It's kind of crappy that our current stock rom is so sluggish, but there is good stuff just around the corner I think.
Don't you get 30 days to return?

what about bloatware? how much of it there? Maybe that's the reason it's smoother?

Yes, you have 30 days. Every Nitro owner who bought from Att should be able to return it since it came out this month.
[email protected],
I'd actually say there is at least as much, if not more bloatware. I really can't explain why, but navigating through menus and scrolling through apps just feels smoother. Now, I had never done a factory reset and reformatted my SD card until my fiasco, so it's possible that helped and that the Nitro rom might feel smoother when I get back to it.
Well, many people reported their phone feels smother after factory reset even if they didn't install anything prior that.

Are you kidding me, this phone is Soooo Much smoother after doing a hard reset, even with bloatware still on it. Even now the Atrix feel so much more sluggish compared to this phone. I dont understand wat people are complaining about this phone. Yes, there's many kinks on this phone that LG never took care of, but that's why we have XDA and the great minds in it, that is to improve the phones we have.
You know wat, Go ahead, go and change your phones to the GS II. And when the Nitro HD gets a significant improvement in the sense of ROMs or any other upgrades, all of you who left this phone behind can weep and regret your decisions
Compare an iPhone or skyrocket. There's a huge difference in smoothness vs the nitro.. especially with the web browser (even opera). Even rooted with ram manager and hard reset, it just doesn't compare. Saying there isn't a difference is like my friend's saying they don't see the big pixels in the s ii. Say what you want about iphones, but i think they have spoiled me in terms of user interaction.
All that said, I agree the phone has tremendous potential and will most likely outshine the s ii when all is said and done.. My guess is that some of the lag involves software rendering of the 1280x720. Scroll around and watch the nitro's CPU spike. Custom roms or ICS much resolve some of this which is why I'm going to wait it out a few more weeks or months too see what unfolds before committing to the device long term.
I have my GN for about 2 days. I'm coming from a Nexus S with ICS and, with the SAME Live Wallpapers the NS was more fluid and smoother than the GN.
WHY?????
More RAM, better procesor, HW acelerator, etc... yet the NS was smoother...
(SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH I'M FROM CHILE)
Someone have this problem??
Higher resolution too.
Live walls suck for wxga devices.
HTC Rezound is the same way.
It's probably mostly because ICS is new and not yet fully optimized.
Wait for ICS 4.1 or 4.2 and most of these problems should be gone.
4.0.3 livewalls are less laggy too.
I don't have any lag here... My Gnex have 4.0.1 and stay unrooted and bootloader locked.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
As many have stated, only one of the stock live wallpapers is completely optimized for ICS, that is phase beam. Any other is going to cause lag. Also, 4.0.3 is the smoothest version out right now which is why Google chose it for the base version. They are probably cleaning up all the bugs and will release it, or another version soon.

If you spend all your time in the launcher, you can save 1-2% battery. Id rather run a LWP.
IMO, if you use your phone for apps, you don't care what the wallpaper looks like, much less if its animated.
Not a solution but a compromise. /s
I never understand how someone could live with problems a Live Wallpaper presents.
I've commented in a couple other "lag" threads, and I find it utterly ridiculous--unacceptable, really--that the flagship Google phone can't run live wallpapers. Yeah, we use our phone for apps, etc., but the point is that lesser phones can do so without issue.
Frankly, it's shocking that people are so willing to accept it. If this were any other phone, people would be ragging on it up and down. Then again, I can also appreciate accepting trade-offs.
Still, to me this is not about how people use their phones or how they think others should use their phones. This is about some of the most fundamental aspects of a phone and its capabilities (at least to most consumers). I mean, when Android phones first started running live wallpapers, people were gushing over the coolness factor.
As I've said in previous posts, I love this phone in theory, and want to get it so badly, but the lagginess for a $300 flagship phone is tough to dismiss. Not to mention, by all accounts it got WORSE with 4.02!

Live walls have sucked hard ever since they first showed up. I guess like most, we enjoy using the phone and the extra glitz just isn't worth it. I certainly am not going to switch devices or OSes over a silly animated wallpaper that gets boring at 5 minutes.

This one doesn't lag in the least.
And they do get boring
I was stoked when live wallpapers first came on the scene, but they lost their cool factor real quick. Now the only live wallpapers I actually like are the ones with minimal animation (ie, phase beam, spectrum ICS) where you don't notice it's a live wall until you really stare.
No lag on this one: http://bit.ly/xjyfgd
Heya guys,
I've got the ever present upgrade itch that everyone here must know about......
I'm really looking into a good phone camera that has decent battery life as well since I can't always bring me DSLR with me around all the time.
How development and everything for the One X? Battery life? I'm looking specifically at the international version.
Thanks
Development is great. Some solid roms for this device within the first month. Can't imagine what it will be like in half a year or when there's an s-off exploit found. Obviously the phone has some great attraction for some of the features it carries and the design.
On ARHD rom right now I get about 18-22 hours of battery life moderate usage, light usage a couple of days, and heavy usage about 10 hours. I'm very satisfied with this phone. Some other people can drop there comments and let you know; also, there's an official reviews thread you should probably check out.

whats the screen time like when you use it heavily (as according to above 10hrs phone on but how long for screen?)
hmmm
any major bugs? I'd like to try sense out as the only HTC phone that I've used was my mum's Desire Z that I automatically flashed CM7 on back when she had it.
I've "heard" that there are some screen flickering issues and launcher reloading.....

I've had my One X for 1.5 weeks now and zero problems whatsoever I get about 12-13hrs from the battery with 3-4h screentime

Here's some info on battery life. It's better than the GN. But the GN has the option of extended and replacable batteries which the One X doesn't.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25725630&postcount=25
As for the camera, I don't think it's finished yet. There's been discussion about noise and compression. Some of the pics I've taken in iffy light haven't been that great. The h/w's there I think the s/w needs some tweaking. If you could live with the camera on the GN the One X will be a step up.

Watch reviews and videos about the s3 vs One x phones..then make your decision. I would say One X. Good phone solid great specs and if you are a gamer you will be happy with the Tegra 3 chip...Battery life is solid so far no complaints. Development i am sure it will pick up...So its down to you my friend

I'm definitely let down by the S3....its seems so similar in many ways to the GNexus that I wouldn't consider it as an "upgrade". I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to people without smartphones though.

The 10 hours probably around 5-6 hours of continuous screen display running videos, games, and other tasks. No sense issues at all except for it uses a lot more battery than pure ics. The screen flickering is unconfirmed as to what is the underlying issue (software or hardware) related. HTC is looking into the screen flickering right now, and launcher reloading I've never had.
I'd say wait 1 month.
QC issues iron over time. S-OFF is not ready as yet. The lack of such 'freedom' will be shocking to a GN user.
Custom ROMs for this device are excellent both in quality and quantity. This is a very popular handset, thus community support is very high.
Battery life is really good. Depending on screen usage you can get 1.5 days usage easy. Heavy usage will obviously reduce that by a lot.

OK so I have a galaxy nexus and got it on launch back in november. I picked up a one x because I really liked the look of it, but so far I can't decide which phone to keep.
The One X is great because it’s lovely to hold, has a fantastic screen and a very decent camera. But the software lets it down – and that’s not some lazy complaint. I’ve owned the phone for two weeks. Whilst Sense 4.0 is a big improvement over previous versions, I still struggle to find any part of it where it’s better than stock ICS, except perhaps the lockscreen which allows multiple targets. But that functionality is common in custom ICS ROMs anyway.
Stock ICS is, I feel, about as good as Android could be at the moment. This makes having to put up with the unnecessary ‘embellishments’ and changes on the One X is frustrating. HTC’s launcher is also considerably laggier than the stock Android 4.0 launcher, and whilst installing Nova launcher helps, I’m not sure why HTC felt the need to use their own anyway.
I must say I totally agree with The Verge’s conclusion on the One X – with stock ICS, it could be the best Android phone ever. Until then… Im just not sure which phone to keep!

I'm in the same position, I'm really not sure which one to keep either - I suspect I will still be saying the same in two months time though!
HTC should have gone out on a limb and developed a dual boot - let the users decide whether they want to run sense or stock.

Yeah I've had the phone nearly a month and still can't decide! Argh
Someone's developing a CM9 port over at Modaco and it's getting close to finished (just a few bugs left to squash). So if it's good enough, I might just install it and sell the Nexus.

any other comments? battery, camera, screen etc? usability?
I've only used an older version for a few minutes, but on the surface everything works fine. It's mostly just odd bugs they're sorting out now. I'd link the thread, but things are a bit iffy between XDA and the developer at Modaco.
Either way, back on my GNex now and it feels like an old friend. Love this phone.
People that installed Jelly Bean, do you see any increase in perfomance?
Write your opinions.
Its not a performance gain. Its just as fast as before just not nearly as choppy. There is a video around here sums it up pretty well.

I do feel like it's snappier, but it's hard to say how much of it is just placebo for hearing about how much snappier it is. There's still some lag every now and then when bringing up the app drawer and such, but there's also graphical improvements that I think make up for everything (the "notification center" or whatever it's called is great).
Although there is Lag in odd spots, I notice neater and smoother transition effects more then anything else. The Keyboard also dissappears when returning to the home screen immediatly rather then lurking on the home screen like it did in ICS. Nothing Major or Revolutionary, but generally neater.
I can tell a major difference after flashing jb.
in old rom chrome is not rendering smoothly when you flip through horizontal tabs comparing to vertical ones. now the problem is completely gone.
From the off, the rom seems noticeably faster and smoother to me.
1. The new app transitions are fantastic. They fade in and out, which is quite slick.
2. The keyboard has ZERO lag, I didn't think it had any lag when I was running AOKP, but running the new JB rom, it's a lot faster again!
3. Home screen/App drawer transitions are a lot snappier. It is now on par with the transitions of an iPhone 4s (Compared with my friends earlier) No lag in the app drawer, even with all of my many apps installed.
4. Last but not least, scrolling long lists is buttery smooth for me Everything just seems so slick at the moment.
On a side note, some subtle changes, like when choosing default action, or long pressing on home screen look a lot nicer. The lock screen looks way cooler. And of course google now seems to be working great. (Aside from having to tell it to use English US, because its not fully functional in the UK)
Hope this helps anyone who was maybe sitting on the fence, I have been running AOKP since getting my nexus, Think is was build 11 or 12 I first had. I am now running Jelly-Belly by Team Inferno and have not even though about returning to AOKP. I will gladly return to AOKP when they release a stable JB update (which will likely be in August some time (JB Source to be released in mid July))
+1 to earlier posts. I can confirm, the "flow" thanks to "Project Butter" is very much appearant to the naked eye. I doubt there is an Android device out there that has a smoother UI than the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean right now. Love it.
EDIT: The smoothness of live wallpapers seems to have been greatly improved as well. A live wallpaper called "Fresh Leaves" lagged quite bad when using AOKP 4.0. Now, with Jelly Bean - no lag at all

Agreed, I also think it is definitely closer, if not on par with that of the iPhone and Windows 7 phones.
Definitely solid 60 fps in more areas. My ics setup is probably 45-50fps solid. I noticed less quirky transitions in jelly bean but a few other odd quirks. Still it is overall smoother than ics. And could use a little more polish.
...
I agree with what everyone has said. Its noticeably a little quicker but it wasn't like ICS was horrible. One thing no one has mentioned is that the delay when pulling up your recent apps is gone. Its now pretty much instant which makes multitasking better. I think everyone should try jb. I've been running stock rooted jb since Wednesday night and couldn't be happier.

There is LAG.
Whoever says there is no lag, do not see properly, or are fanboys willing to not see or ignore those quirks.
I'm a HUGE Google fan, and I've been disappointed. This is 2012, and I genuinely believed that Android is better in almost EVERY way than iOS. But I disagree now.
I watched the io live, so much chest thumping, project butter n stuff - got me very excited. After installing it on my nexus, and experiencing it - I concur with most of the statements mentioned here.
Now it disappoints me because THERE IS LAG and the way Google boasted about butter, and the hackery that has gone into it to make it "appear" smoother - while the odd lag and jerks still exists as before, is a bit of a dampener.
The phone is noticeably smoother, the jerks are still present - if you have an eye to look at it, and considering Android top smartphones pack 1.5 times the power of an iOS or Windows phone - backed by Google, can still not solve this basic UI fluid problem - is disappointing.
I would prefer less chest thumping, and more action in dealing with this problem but after doing some heavy net searching - I've found this issue relates to the core of android, and makes it an inferior user experience to iOS and even Win P7 which runs on inferior hardware too

I have better than 20/20 vision and am hardly a fanboi. It's a significant boost in performance over ICS. Can't wait to see the AOSP ROMS, they shall be killer.
So keep looking, and you shall find.
Considering this is a Developer PREVIEW, I'd have to say it's amazing. There is most definitely a difference in smoothness when compared to ICS. There is slight lag, but nothing that hasn't been seen on competing OS.

Find proof in what I said earlier which you nitpicked
Observe your phone carefully - and you would find the same thing as what I wrote.
Now for your question here - yes, you are right, it is a good enough improvement over ICS.
The animations are faster, switching to messages and coming back - is much faster. App drawer, open close is faster - the screen "feels" more sensitive - it works with feather touches - and almost feels like the system is eager to make you feel how smooth it is.
All that works. ICS was smooth too. Granted this one is smoother.
Lag and jerks existed in ICS too, and they do in Jelly Bean as well. They have resorted to other ways of making the phone experience to appear smoother while the problem with lag - scrolling through screens, app drawers, switching from app back to home drawer, and then scrolling - the MAJOR components of lag, still exists.
and irritate. If you're fine with it, cool. Good for you. I expected better of Google. Given WP7 and iOS do a phenomenal job with inferior hardware. Even the iOS part doesnt hurt as much as the WP7 does.
I mean come on! MS making this better than Google? There's some serious questions to be asked on our love for android here.
I don't pay attention to the animations since I typically disable them, and they can indeed be "hacked" to appear smoother. I've always felt that animations are just wasted time. I think that this preview is a sign of good things to come, but also some bad things to come, i.e. the new wifi drivers STILL suck.
I can see your point however. I think it's the trade off we have to make to have such great customization vs the Iphone.

Its a leaked developers version, its not ready for primetime and was never meant to be. Once AOSP is updated I'm sure it will be sorted. However, it is a promising start IMO. Seems smoother (NOT lagfree) then stock ICS
Everything's amazing and nobody is happy.
You want to see some lag, try a Vibrant on stock Froyo. This stuff does not bother me in the least. It didn't bother me in ICS. JB is awesome. JMO.
Hi guys,
Anyone know the main advantages and updates for 4.4? I'm probably gonna wait for the OTA, but am curious.
Cheers

touch response
I have noticed touch response is more immediate. Most noticeable when typing or scrolling in chrome. It seems the screen responds immediately to touch input instead of that micro delay that Jellybean had. (Some may disagree about Jellybean) Even if it is minor, it does address that issue that some Apple fans have when trying android devices.
I for one am happy to see the improvement even though I never thought the issue was a major problem to begin with. But it does give you that "oneness with the screen" feel.
Likes/dislikes with update
I've been using a pretty well made RoM for Android 4.4, and I understand that it IS a rom and WILL have issues so I'll not mention the bugs.
So far in my experience the device is lightning fast, and really removes the old apple complaint of android being clunky. Though it's never felt slow to me, it certainly is a speed demon now. With the icons working and installed, the new folders, and new home layout the device really feels bright and homely. Yet you still maintain an ability to make it however you want it, I like this because it gives new users a bright take on Android. So speeds been addressed, and the (Sometimes!) dreary looking devices are addressed What else changed? A lot of little things, but the most important for me is definitely Google Now. For me, Google Now has always been a real flagship for android. A big feature than I really enjoy using, and now that its further integrated into the OS I feel that it will be easier for people to use, and will become much more popular.
All in all, I found that it was a great update.
I am noticing a huge improvement to the battery. I was getting about 17 hours on 4.3 but am getting over 30 hours on 4.4.
