Verizon Edge Glitch? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

As you all know Verizon Edge is only for customers who have an upgrade available or new customers. Today while trying to upgrade one of my devices online ( note I don't have an upgrade available until next year), it let me buy the HTC One with the edge upgrade plan. I'm not sure if this is a glitch or if it's supposed to be that way. But I thought I would inform you guys.

I was doing the same thing as well as the OP...I was just experimenting trying to help my dad get the One. It let us get all the way thru till the end until we hit activate, (( we stopped because he wants to think about it first )) but I truly believe this works....
to answer ^ question, my dad is on Unlimited Data and it did NOT remove it or offer him Verizon Maxx.....so Idk what to think...

I already got a tracking number and everything so it looks like it does!

I can say that while I was at the store, the rep told me I would not lost my unlimited, grandfathered plan if I chose to use their Edge program. (Contrary to what everyone keeps saying...)

That's what I don't understand...I called corporate and they said that you HAVE to have an Upgrade available....
Oh well I guess as long as it works lmao

That's exactly what they told me too but apparently not when you do it online.

It did the same with me and I don't have an upgrade until next year. But I read somewhere in the pages of the process that it was with no contract. So I was wondering if they cancel your current contract and charge you the ETF (or not?) . You never now.

I wish there was a way that Edge could charge a credit card instead of the account for the monthly payments.
While I am an account manager and can do almost whatever I want, I am not the owner and do not "directly" pay the bills.

I'm on unlimited data still and I am not available for upgrade. I selected upgrade at full retail, then selected the $25 pay option. I tried this out and I was able get any phone under the EDGE pay plan. I chose to purchase with a plan and it allowed me to keep my unlimited data and current plan. It will add the $25 to your account every month and you will also have to pay the 1st payment and upgrade fee at check out. It was $58.22 for me due today. At the last second I decided to not finish the purchase.

You could just go with monthly deductions from the card.

I'm not eligible for an upgrade, was able to pay full retail for my phone over 24 payments (NOT EDGE) and keep unlimited data, as well as not re-up the contract for another two years (my original upgrade date stayed the same [sometime in 2014]). This is a pretty big hole, I'd imagine they'll be correcting this soon and making into something of an "early EDGE" upgrade as opposed to what it is now.

Are you sure you didn't get the Device Payment Plan. That is seperate from Edge and allows you to pay off a retail device over 12 months for $2 charge a month and lets you keep unlimited. Its been around for a few months.

I'm not sure what it was called but sounds about right, I know it wasn't Edge.
Still a pretty big hole though. Had they thought of it/seen this hole they could of called what they had given me a "courtesy" Edge upgrade - I still would have paid full price, then I would have lost unlimited data and been tied down for another two years.

Not really a hole. Its a plan they advertised that allowed you to keep unlimited. Its just a higher payment than the Edge plan. I assumed the Edge plan was going to replace this Payment Plan but for the time being they are keeping them separate.

That makes no sense. I'm not cancelling my line of service, so what exactly am I terminating? When it says you start a new contract, that's intended for new customers or customers with an upgrade. Because that's whom edge is intended for.

Yes it does. If you don't have an upgrade available you could be seen as breaching your service contract. I've seen similar things happen in my line of work. Its possible for sure don't think it isn't. These people aren't new customers they're existing ones who are changing their contracts over to edge without have a legal exit to their current contract.

It wouldn't hold up. The contract wasn't cancelled. These people who are doing it still have a line of service. You can't get charged an ETF without actually terminating a line.

Tierd data

Is that just for one line or if ypu have a family plan and get the 5g will it go for both lines
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
well seeing as how there is currently no shared data plan for family plans atm, it will probably be per line, not per family account.
The majority of people use 2gb of data so that's $30. Right now data cost 30$ so this won't affect the majority. Power users use more than 2 using anywhere from 5-10gb so these power users have to pay extra because Verizon loves money. I use 6gb and sometimes 8gb so ill worry about this when I grab my Droid Incredible 3

This tired plan really should be renamed to "lower caps and more money plans"..... I'm not entirely sure how on earth anyone could think this is good for the end users.
Wait ... can someone please tell me if I'm on a family plan with 3 Smart phones (my Inc2, and 2 Droid Charges) with the unlimited data, when we upgrade or renew our contract, do we get to keep our unlimited data? Or is it unclear to everyone at this moment?
If you renew your contract, you are no longer grandfathered as you are agreeing to new terms. If you have current data plans with no intention to change/renew in the near future, you are covered with unlimited data. If you buy your device at retail without renewing your contract, your contract should remain the same.
More than likely if you have an unlimited plan, you will eventually start being harassed by Verizon to renew, upgrade, or do something else that will cause contract changes on your part to switch you to a limited data plan.
I am a power user. I have used upwards to 8gb in a month on 3G. Capping at a max of $10 for an ungodly amount per month is unacceptable. This would be too easy to break on 4G and I think that is their intention.
Sprint is pretty proud of their unlimited plans. If Verizon doesn't see the light before it comes time for me to renew again, I may forego my discount and move to Sprint if Sprint continues down the path of unlimited.

I'm not misinformed. If you upgrade using their upgrade option, you are also renewing your contract. Renewing your contract means new contract terms should your current contract no longer be available/valid. This means upgrading after the 7th would mean you lose unlimited data. This is why people are rushing to get their upgrades in, so they can be grandfathered in.

well the month to month is being abolished, that's a given. it was a marketing move to reel in more business. Once the contracts are established they were given quazy deals to move from month to month to contractual.

i just called into their corporate accounts customer service and asked all about the how to of upgrading my current min/data plan come the end of July.
the rep verbatim said "there is no change that would take affect to my account when upgrading either. She said if necessary they can actually help me by giving me some extra min's if infact i am running low on my current set to hold me over till my next billing cycle".
"but as far as upgrading there are no extra fee's nor changes in packages coming any time soon, that she is aware of".
"so when the time comes in July to simply call and make the upgrade and go ahead and do so".
I talked to some Verizon employees and they all told me that whenever I renew my contract/upgrade with Verizon, I'll still be grandfathered in with the unlimited data, I'll try asking a different store if people have heard different.
I just called last thursday, and I was asking about canceling. I was really thinking about going to another carrier, I was interested in getting a Nexus S. I wasn't eligible yet for an upgrade, but they gave me an early one which was great. But I was talking to the guy, and his argument to stay was unlimited data, I said that tiered data was going to happen for them as well. He said he nothing of this, hadn't heard anything at all.
So now this, but who knows maybe they leave their employess in the dark. And maybe they dont read up regularly on engadet and droid-life like I do.
But they really need to get the prices down a bit. Tmobile you can get 500mins, unlimited text and 5gb of data for 79.99, The same thing on verizon would now be like over $100 I could be a bit off, but this could hurt them in the future.

Had to happen eventually.
This. Is why I told my friends to switch to the double data promo a couple months ago. I am Jack's total lack of surprise.

Well I guess we need to wait for the exact info but there is some speculation that even someone on your family account changing phones could cause anyone on the same account to lose unlimited. My wife just recently downgraded from Android to iPhone (has had 2 HTC phones which both would not shut off the screen when she had it next to her face and she doesn't like the screen size of the LTE phones) who I guess now has a 3G unlimited plan down from a 4G plan she had when she was using my old Thunderbolt. While she doesn't use that much data and being forced into a tiered plan when she upgrades in 2 years won't be a big deal but I want to keep my unlimited even if it means buying phones off contract. The only thing that might make it ok is the $60 I pay now between both phones for data can be used for like a 10 or 20 gig bucket.
I will be pissed if they don't offer us AT LEAST the double data promo.

I think thats exactly the opposite of how its going to work, if you have a contract with them, you can make them honor it. If you do not have a contract with them, your screwed. Right now I am paying $50 for 10GB, if the "data share" thing comes through, I imagine they would charge you $10/each additional phone on your plan, you would be looking at around $60/10GB IF they are still offering the double data! That's a BIG if, you better call them right now. Normally $50 gets you 5GB.
It is what it is, these wireless companies are all the same. Personally I'm tired of the misinformation, online petitions and broken promises. When my contract is up and they try to move me or my 3G wife to another plan I'll let my wallet do the talking and go to the company that offers the best overall value.

The problem for me is VZW is the only carrier to actually have reception in my area, and everybody knows it, so they can charge whatever they want. I have a choice of paying VZW a super premium and always being able to use the device I am paying for, or paying a competitor and not having service.

I'm just shocked they won't let us use it through the rest of our contract. Giving people only a few months using it and making them switch mid contract is beyond awful.
Looking for advice
So now I need some advice. According to these reports, specifically on techcrunch, "Shammo makes it sound like only customers who upgrade after the change takes place will have to pick a new data plan (for better or worse), and with any luck they’ll leave the lucky souls who have already locked their old data plans alone for now."
I bought a Gnex on verizon a few weeks after it came out. I'm currently on a family plan and I'm the only one who has a smartphone on the plan (3 total phones, mine's one of the "added" lines). Currently I'm on a "month to month" I guess is what it's called. My particular line's contract expired at the beginning of this month and I am currently just paying my same charges with unlimited data, but not bound into the 2 year agreement as far as I'm aware.
What I want to know is how to handle it from here on out, if there's a way to even handle it well. I would like to renew my contract and be able to keep my grandfathered unlimited data through this garbage, which means I need to act immediately before they put this crap into effect, assuming it won't go retro active. So with that being said, can I just simply call and get my contract renewed for 2 years and that be that? Is there even a way to do that? I just don't want to blow whatever extra time I have on my grandfathered unlimited data.
I realize that all the information isn't there, but how would you guys handle this if you were in my position? I don't want to screw myself, I use 8-12 gb of data a month so this is sort of important.

Paying off my note 2?

So in nov I signed up with tmobile and got the note and a gs3 for my wife. I plan on selling the note and getting the s4 in march. I call tmobile to pay it off and they tell me I have to pay both phones off? This isn't what the agent told me when I signed up. He knew I swap phones about every 6 months. So my question is why can't I pay the note off separate? My wife never upgrades her phone plus it would lower my bill per month down. Tmobile is ending the subsidiaries anyways so I don't see what the issue is? The reason I went gsm is to be able to put any phone on the carrier as I like, such as international versions.
Talk to a different rep. Cause that rep is an asshole
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Nope just spoke to customer relations and was told it cannot be done until tmobile ends the subsidiaries in a few months. No way in hell I'm paying $700+ for both phones. Basically the rep I signed up with flat out lied to me. If I would of known this I would of just bought my note full retail. Really ticked off right now.
$720 for both phones + $600 or so for the s4 is just too much for me.
3rd damn carrier that seems to lure their customers in with lies. Who would refuse me paying off a phone today? Basically I was told their systems cannot allow only one device to be payed off until may when they change their policies. This is really going to screw over a lot of people. I just don't get it.
Can anyone explain tmobiles logic in this? I'm baffled.
I've heard that since it was Even More Plus. The credit line is for everything combined, you can't separate them out. No idea if that's the truth, but they have been consistent in telling me that. If you were lied to, that really sucks and, IMO, they should try to do something for you. No idea what, but they could offer something.
Not much help, but at least confirming what they are telling you now anyway.

Yeah I have it in writing too from the original kiosk rep. I'm really ticked as I talk to this guy all the time when I'm at the mall. Tmobile is investigating what he told me and I've notified his manger. This really screws anyone who wants to get another phone anytime before may. I just don't understand the logic. Why would they care if I decide to pay the device off? Now I'm screwed if I wanted to get the s4 in a few weeks unless I add a 3rd line.
Now I can see why so many go prepaid. To avoid all of the carrier BS. This is worse then what I dealt with on both sprint and Verizon.
There has to be a loophole for this. Any ideas guys?
It does make sense that the credit extended is put into one loan. I'm sure it makes it easier on the accounting for them....... BUT...... If that guy told you something different, I would go straight to him and have him help you get this sorted out immediately. He's the one that gave you misinformation, I would make him spend time working to correct it also.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
yeah, this really makes no sense to me why they would require this just because the phone accounts are linked? Just to be sure though, I'm going to make sure I buy my phone and my wife's phone separately.
Im told its becuase both phones were purchased together but that was becuase thats the day i switched from verizon to tmobile. The rep knew i switch devices often and told me it wouldnt be an issue. I got an email from the manager that they are investigating. If any of you bought the phones together id check on this. Im glad they are ending the pay per month on the phones BS. From now on ill pay full price.
This happened to me too. Opened a tmo business account and bought an S3 and a cheap text phone for the wife. Financed $500 between the two, and was told I could pay them off seperately. The note 2 comes out, so I go to pay the balance of the S3. I was told the same, you have to pay both off because they where contracted at ths same time. But I still had enough available credit to finance the note 2, swap the sim from the S3 in to the note 2, put the S3 on Craigslist, it sold the next day for the $400 balance I had on the note 2. Walked in to tmo the very next day and paid the note 2 off.
This is just an idea, I don't know for sure if it will work, but when I bought
my Note and my wife's phone, they told me that is no penalty if I pay
the phone(s) in advance OR if I pay more per month to shorten the pay
period of 20 months.
So, I guess you can go into the store and tell them you want to pay, let's say
$300 in the account for the phones. That will lower your montly payment, just
like you payed yours out and not "mess" with they're account number.
It's worth a try anyway....
Wait. So I have a $2000 credit on my account for devices. There's like $700 available. Your saying they won't let me pay a partial payment towards that?

I think you can make a partial payment, but your monthly bill stays the same until its all paid off

i was told flat out i cannot pay off just one device, it has to be all of them or none until they end the subsidies and change their systems in may. im waiting to hear back from the store manager.

the way tmobile does business is BS. never had this issue on sprint or verizon, i could swap phones when ever i wanted without penalties. knowing me the s4 will be announced and ill get impatient and just pay the $720 off and get the new phone lol. from now on ill always just buy my devices outright.
You could do what I did. Pay the deposit on the new phone and finance the rest, sell the old phone, then pay off the new phone.

i get what your saying but until these phones are payed off i wouldn't be able to activate the s4 or whatever phone on the current lines without penalty. id have to open a 3rd line. if i cannot get this resolved i guess ill just have to wait until they change their systems in late april or may.

that's when tmobile gets the s4, i was planning on buying the international version as it will ship much sooner than the US carriers will get it. plus from now on i won't finance phones from tmobile, ill buy them outright. if that's what you meant buy putting a deposit down.
it's my fault for believing the rep and not reading all of the fine print. the dude must be like a car salesman. says anything for a sale.

If that is the case, which I will call tomorrow and find out, me and tmobile are gonna have a huge problem. I upgrade very often. If I can't pay a portion of that off to free up space for a new device there's no point.

same here man, i upgrade very often. go ahead and call and i bet you get the same response i was given. once they end the subsidies and change the policies you will be able to pay just one device off. "take that with a grain of salt". to me this just doesn't make much business sense. if i finance two cars at the same time for lets say 2 years and decide to pay one of them off early i doubt anyone would be complaining getting their money early.
fix-this! said:

I thought the same but they confirmed it for the tmobile version as well "$168.99" can't go wrong
I did the math
Regular plan: $168.99 (upgrade) + $200.00 (switch over to value plan fee)
=$368.99 = win
Value plan: $150 + 24 x 20 a month = $629.99

Hey is that in stores only? 168.99 or 198.99? And did you originally have the classic plan? Why move to the new value plan? I have Classic 1000 so it's shared within my family. If you are on the individual plan, it makes sense.
---------- Post added at 06:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:33 PM ----------
Edit: Probably the no-contract deal with Value Plan. Even so, if you are the only line, and you move completely to the Value, I don't know how that's gonna work for future upgrades.

I do have a bit of warning for you, from Walmart's Terms of Purchase for S4/other smartphones:
Rate Plan Changes, Deactivations, or Cancellations After 14 Days
We are able to offer our customers amazing prices because we are an online retailer and because of our sales volume with the nation's most popular wireless carriers. Our business model is simple. We earn commissions from our carrier partners for activating and upgrading customers on their services. We use our commissions to offer an Instant Savings Discount (ISD) on our wireless devices, enabling us to sell them to you for very low prices or free. By accepting the ISD, you agree to keep your account in good standing and keep your wireless plan and features as activated for at least 180 days.
You agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, your carrier notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our 14-day Satisfaction Guarantee.
Please note some of the reasons your carrier may notify us of a deactivation include if:
You transfer this equipment to another line of service after it is activated
You change your rate plan to a lower monthly service rate than was specifically required at the point of purchase
You deactivate texting/data features that were specifically required at the point of purchase
The new line of service activated with your order is used to replace a pre-existing account
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This same rule applies for Amazon as well, and probably Costco/Dell/other websites. That is why I only buy from T-Mo or Best Buy, because I will only be signing a contract with T-Mo. Walmart/Amazon/etc has their own contract, for which you must adhere to when activating a new phone with them and taking that discount. They get commissions from it, so if you alter your plan like you're doing, you might be charged that penalty.
I don't know how strictly enforced this is, but just be careful you know all the terms.
Getting mine on the 8th for sure. I bought my s3 from walmart last year and I wasn't required to get a data plan which is great cuz I have android preferred data plan now.

This is a common Agreement that most 3rd party resellers (indirect) as they are referred to in the industry, have to protect themselves. Most companys follow through with them and do it. but then again, lots of people as a customer have their cards replaced or whatever in that time frame.
Using a pre paid card was a pain in the but for us. Then we would contact a debt collector agency to go after these people. Lots of times they were foreigners and there was no recourse since they would get up to 5 lines and leave the country.
It can really put an indirect company out of business in a hurry when that happens.
I just went to Walmart and they have them in stock, but they wouldn't price match T-Mobile, he said " they are basically 2 different phone because we have it on a contract and T-Mobile stores have them without one" and I couldn't upgrade my line because I'm on a value plan, with a 2 year contract. And they said that they couldn't switch me off, so I left with nothing

Why don't you just buy it with T-Mobile then? They really still offer the cheapest plan overall. I don't know if people are trying to circumvent the system or what, but that's what I did and I think I'm gonna stick with it. $200 (down payment, tax, shipping) and then $480 for 2 years. I know, people think $650 is way too much for a smartphone. But guess what? If you want the greatest and latest tech, be willing to pay for it instead of whining it's expensive. This is not directed at you, by the way, so don't take it the wrong way. I'm just seeing people here trying to find the cheapest deals, but the sneaky way. It's a $100-$150 savings at the most. If you want a deal, go to eBay, CL, or Swappa and buy used. If you want it new and sealed, get it from T-Mobile.
Edit: I don't know if you could upgrade using the EIP or not but if you wanted to pay full price, you could always open a new account, buy/pay full price for device, and cancel service immediately.

I went to T-Mobile first to buy it out right since the rep told me on Saturday that they will have them In today, but now he told me not till next week. So I took a chance and went to Walmart to see if they would have it. And they did, but for $699. I wanted them to price match since I only had enough cash on me for a $629 phone plus tax lol. Oh well I guess I'll just wait till next week and go to T-Mobile or just pay the extra $80+ and get it tomorrow. I just found it funny that Walmart had it and the corporate T-Mobile store didn't.

2.5gb of Hotspot for free

I called tmobile about a issue with my Phone.. and the lady offered me 4gb of Hotspot a month for 10 dollars.. I declined it, and then she said for being a "loyal customer" she can give me 2.5gb of Hotspot for the same price that I pay now with unlimited data.. so instead of me getting the half a gig of Hotspot data every month, I now get 2.5gigs.. and my bill stay the same..
I'm not sure if anyone else knew this or not.. so if not.. yall should call and see if you can get it also..

Hopefully thats not the case cause id like to get free hotspot as well until I get force migrated eventually. Unfortunately, im almost sure that's the case.

There is no contract with T-Mobile. The only time you're under "contract" is until your phone is paid off. If you already paid your phone off or brought it to them there's no "contract". It is their new plan and you have to sign up for it if you were an existing customer.

Not true. They offered me to switch to another classic plan. The ones with the 2.5gb, 4.5gb, 6.5g etc plans. No migration fee, came with hotspot, AND another 2 year commitment.
So YES, people can still sign contracts, I know, it doesn't make sense to me either.
They wanted to do the same thing to me when I got my Note 3, but I'm on the actually unlimited data plan and didn't want to give that up. I don't usually use too much data but when I need it I need it.

Not true, the only way you can still get a T-Mobile contract is if you opt into it as a small business customer, or if you go through an authorized dealer like Walmart, which I don't even think Walmart does. If you are in a contract when you upgrade, you are only required to finish out your existing contract. If you are paying your phone off with an EIP (Equipment Installment Plan) you are only required to pay off the existing balance of the phone (if applicable) if you decide to leave.
In store we use the 2.5gb of free hotspot as a selling point, you get it regardless provided you move to the Simple Choice (Post-Paid) plans from any of the older plans, and have either 2.5gb or fully UNL plan.

Wrong. You can still extend with a classic plan. No migration fee but another 2 year commitment.
When I was in the store getting my Note they checked my plan and the sales associate did mention that my current plan was still cheaper than what they were offering. I don't use that many minutes so I don't need the extra minutes. I was on the 2.5gb plan that throttles speeds after that and when my wife joined my plan we switched to the Unlimited high speed plan with 1000 shared minutes almost 2 years ago. So a similar current plan is $120 before taxes and fees for my wife and myself. Not bad in comparison to other providers but still not as good and the only benefit is extra minutes we won't use and 2.5gb of tether which I rarely use as it is. We pay right under $100 a month right now
Nope, Uh Uh, Nada

Show me something that says you're on a contract! You can't because there are no contracts!
So she wanted to you to pay an extra $10 for something everyone was getting free? LMAO!

T-Mobile still has fully unlimited plans. They are actually cheaper now, and come with 2.5GB of hotspot usage. If anyone here wants to know anything about the plans and what changes and what doesn't let me know. I work in a corporate retail location, so if anyone has any questions I would be more than happy to answer or find the answer.

Chiming in with the 3rd not true. You can get individual classic contract plans at Costco. No need for small business/corporate accounts.
