The devs need to do two things : 1. to find a way to get the root privilege so 2. to turn off write-protection of the internal sd so flashing the CWM recovery image and custom roms is possible.
There used to be one or some kernel vulnerabilities to achieve these. They found some methods to get a root privilege and also forced the Linux kernel to load a kernel module to turn off write protection. Now these wouldn't work any more as the stock update fixed these security issues.
The scenario for iOS is the same too. IPad2 jailbreaking is nowhere to see either. It is a different issue, but the morale behind these is if the vendors don't support JB in iOS or rooting in Android , the future of JB or Rooting may be gloomy.
Though HTC announced its hboot unlocking, I still doubt if write-protection can be turned off. My next Android phone could be Nexus series, 'cos Google Phone was/is/will be always open, if Google doesn't change the policy.

OK so a bit of history...
I just sent back a galaxy note 2 n7100 to amazon (removed all trace of root)
Sent it back as I installed root and custom rom - managed to lose imei etc (didn't backup)
Even after the noble efforts of some kind forum members I could not save the phone
They have sent me a new note n7100.
I want to root it and back it up only. I can live with stock samsung rom
I don't even need cwm installed as the root is for a few certain apps and a cheeky overclock.
Is it safe enough to just root? Will I be able to unroot and update my stock rom?
Thanks
Dan
There are stickies everywhere with information on rooting. Only you will know when you are comfortable enough to root your phone. If you are not comfortable doing it, , don't. Read and study more until you are not longer afraid.

Yeah I have read stickies and such.
I was comfortable with rooting my galaxy s3 as I had no problems with it.

I just picked up the Note 2 yesterday and looking to do the same . I came from the vibrant which had no flash counter or normal rom check . From what I've read cf root is most likely what I'm going to use but I'm not very familiar with this flash counter stuff . I'm on the jump plan and plan on upgrading in 6 months and I don't want my upgrade to be rejected due to flash counter and so on . An help is much appreciated .

I kinda think you have to root for firewalls, avast anti theft, no ads, also directory bind and increased sound Volume.
The root is pretty simple and there are enough guides to get your counter reset and indeed lose the modified tag. It worked for me.
Dr ketan has a few real good guides. Don't be scared. I've rooted four of these and now I've a custom rom too.

Rooting is a piece of cake. It's finding a custom Rom that suites you which is the real problem. It's like a jungle out there for us noobs.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If the gains you perceive from rooting (custom ROMs, Tasker/Titanium, nandroids, etc) outweigh your risk-aversion to possibly losing your warranty or damaging your phone, then don't do it.
Having said that, if you follow all the instructions carefully and understand the process, you should have no issues. I've rooted the last half dozen phones/tablets and it's been smooth sailing.
After losing my IMEI it took me almost 3 weeks to find a solution to my uprooted device, now that I regained the IMEI back I rooted it for the first time, installed the triangle away and returned the status to normal the counter was already 0. I've also noticed that the OTA update is functioning properly.
Found the correct thread and files and I've successfully rooted and have the unlimited multi window mod .

.....luck is irrelevant.....
Not a single developer on this site. ..that I've been able to find. ..is advising users to flash roms not intended for their respective device. ..
Do you suppose that is luck as well ??
I submit that you have not pushed your device far enough (yet) with incompatible software to do any permanent damage. ..
But if you believe luck will carry you through then by all means. ..proceed. ..
I choose the years of experience our development team has provided. ..
And the code they rely on. ..
If Verizon devices and ATT devices were the same. ..or compatible. ..then our section would include them together. ..
I congratulate you for your bravery...but would advise those users reading this to think twice before attempting the installation of Verizon software on the ATT device. ..as you may not be so lucky. ...
I encourage the advancement of our devices. ..but I ultimately fail to find any possible benefit in what you are doing that outweighs the risks associated with your endeavors. ..
Please enlighten me...
In the meantime. ..I'll continue the use of approved software. ..as I'm not willing to waste $799.00 trying to beat proven science. ....
Best of luck to you. ..g

As long as you make sure you flash an att modem and kernel you will have no issues, actually the kernel would even work just dont ever flash the wrong modem or you will have a hard brick. Ive done this several times myself and have never had an issue. It was the same when I had my s3, you could flash any verizon or sprint rom as long as you flashed proper modem and kernel before rebooting. I used to love jelly beans on my s3, was the best rom I tried so I will be flashing this as soon as download is done :good:

It's true though, I've flashed many other Roms from different carriers..Not many people are even aware from those methods that it does work. Am not saying all of them, but the ones I have tried were successful.
Be careful posting such advice out in the wild ...as first time flashers may get confused as too which rom, radio, and kernel combinations are safe and which are not..
Thus we rely on our developers to package files specific to our devices ...and the safest methods to incorporate them...
I suggest that if your plan is to mix and match software's on this or any device ...it would be prudent to handle those conversations in the form of private massages ...until a proven method is posted ...
I've seen 5 device bricks this week ...and in 3 of those cases the user was confused as to whether or not the correct software and methods were used...
Threads holding names like "use Verizon software on ATT"...only serve to add confusion in the minds of our user base...
Bricks don't just happen ....they are created when users make mistakes by either not following directions ...or using incompatible software ...or a combination of the two ...(add confusion here )...
As stated above ....only some combinations will work ...not all...even when using the posted Verizon software....so if you truly want to protect your reputation and avoid sending folks down to brickville....then post which software combinations are safe only after confirmation from a defined and listed user base ...which will allow contact between users should problems arise ...
Right now it's only ..."this works ..so run it"...
So far...no one has posted here claiming that these methods bricked a device ....but the odds are stacking up every day that someone will ...
Please provide testing results with a clearly defined list of working software for users to draw from ...and how to install it properly...
And those users acting as testers should be included in the thread as well ....
And the most important statement of all should be the first line in the thread ...
"Use this software at your own risk"..!!!
I'm not trying to cause issues in your thread ...I'm simply trying to protect you ...and the many devices that your thread will influence...g

Edit: I'm running AT&T Stock UCAMH3 DeOdex but i'm using Saber Kernel 46- from Jedi Master 18 from Tmobile just flashed yesterday see screen my shot and it works fine too.
Man, a bunch of timid little girls... This is XDA. It was BUILT on peole doing things they weren't supposed to do & trying things new that nobody else would try. How do you think itsme developed all the tools that nearly every kitchen for the last decade has been based on was created? The site is XDA developers & until the iPhone & the influx of cheap smartphones, all the members were developers, serious hobbyists or lurkers. What anyone tries to do or decides not to do is up to them. You wouldn't spend $200,000.00 on timber & hardware to build your dream house if you have never swung a hammer in life, same applies here. It is common sense & people with it learn before they do or are willing to take risk & learn as they do. Heck, back in the day, I bought a lot of six Kaisers just to brick, so that I could work with Jocky on a way to revive bricks, i.e. FrankenKaiser...
In this particular instance, the device are essentially identical. That opens the door for a lot of cross compatibility. Manufacturers like Qualcomm are starting to produce chips (radio) that support numerous bands. Some of the latest have the ability to support as many as 23 different LTE bands. This is good for them, less revisions equal less production costs, & it is good for us as well, since it means more cross compatibility.
Really, Samsung lately has been making devices pretty compatible & unless you are messing with the boot or modem partition, it is pretty hard to make a brick.
Of course, the first thing anyone should ask themselves is WHY THEY ARE DOING THIS? & maybe watch this video:

Ok. Let me push you over the edge. I had never considered rooting a phone until I got the note 3. I decided to root so I could customise the pen widow ap. It has been the best thing that I have ever done with a phone. Yes the note 3 can be a little temperamental when attempting to flash ROMS but there is a lot of support and if you need help pm me and I will help to get you going. Going to put in a plug here for my ROM of choice. JEDI ROMS are good but I have not found a better setup so far than X-Note. Any questions about it and I will be glad to answer. Don't let other people's problems change your mind about rooting. This is a must root device.
Thanks mate, is that compatible with tmobile. I checked thread and it looks pretty sweet. I liked the air command themes. I got some questions, I'll pm you

Totally worth it man. Very easy to do as well. Not only the customizations mentioned above but also aosp roms and such are wonderful. W03 Slim is fantastic!
It's so easy to unroot the phone and go back to stock, so you might as well give it a shot and see how you like it. Unless you're completely incompetent then nothing too bad should come out of it. I personally like having my phone rooted without any custom ROMS. But that's just me, a lot of others would say different.
I am hoping to unlock SIM for a t-mobile phone / region unlock. I understand I can do that by rooting it. Can I root and leave it with stock firmware, and will I get OTA updates? Also, is it safe and easy to unroot. IF it's unrooted, will they know it was rooted (i.e. warranty void?)
Thanks
Rooting doesn't void warranty either. I was skeptical too. Rooted on 4.3 and loving it.

Waiting for my phone. Hopefully it's still on 4.3. So can someone confirm I understand everything all this correctly.
I can root with Root de vega (if still on older firmware) and it won't trigger anything to void warranty. I just want to use region unlock to try unlock the sim/region. After that...I can either unroot? or keep it root. IF I keep it root...but I want the latest firmware (not custom)...is that possible? I've seen video about flashing the firmware from Sammobile with Odin which brings it back to unroot stock...but what if I just want the newest stock firmware without unrooting? Do I need some other recovery and flash something else? Will putting in different recovery cuz the warranty tracker to trigger?

It is impossible to root without tripping KNOX. Rooting touches and modifies the Kernel. As long as the kernel is modified or even touched the KNOX flag gets tripped. So as long as Samsung uses KNOX their phones will never be able to be rooted or tampered with. This is the general purpose of KNOX in the first place. To assure corporate IT admin that the phone is safe and not compromised.
Great! What about the rooting stock? Any issues - things not working, lag, battery?
Would anyone be willing to talk about the ROM they've used as opposed to stock and why?

Rooting alone cause no change to your system other than giving you full super permission of all the files in the system. That is it. But that change to the file system is what trips KNOX. So other than a KNOX trip nothing on your system changes just due to root.
