Hey guys,
I have a takju GSM GNex running the most recent 6th August build of Paranoid Android. But these problems were there even on completely stock unrooted 4.2.2 and 4.3.
There are two things (or two symptoms of the same problem) that go wrong as far as I can tell:
1. Whenever I listen to any audio in any app (play music, youtube), the phone turns off after 5-10 minutes. The speaker 'pops' loudly and that's it. The screen's completely off and only way to turn it back on is to pull the battery and restart it.
2. Whenever I get a notification when the screen's off, the screen refuses to turn on when the power button is pressed. If I don't get a notification, it's all fine. It doesn't matter which app gives me that notification. The speaker doesn't 'pop' here.
In both cases, it's just the screen that doesn't come on. Since the notification light keeps blinking still so the phone itself doesn't turn off; it's just the screen.
The phone is not in warranty anymore and Samsung is asking $70 for repair. I would like to fix it on my own if it's possible.I realize it may be a hardware problem. But is there any way to pinpoint which part I would need to replace? If it's not a HW problem, is there any way to fix it through software? I've already completely wiped data, cache, dalvik cache once when I wiped to install Paranoid Android. The problem didn't reappear for probably half a day after the wipe and then it was back.
I have a new CM11 install on there and that is happening to me. It didn't happen right away but after a day of installing stuff, it started happening. Could be the Theme Manager, could be some app I installed? It's gotta be software.

I'm trying to diagnose a very odd issue that started this morning. I woke up and checked my phone and instead of getting the normal screen I just had a battery image showing 100%. I've never seen that charging image before today. I could not get to my phone screen so I rebooted the phone and now the screen will immediately power itself off after a second or two. I have been able to get it to the phone screen a couple of times, but if I touch the screen it powers off.
I am running Juggernaut 4.1 and have had no issues before today. I didn't install or update anything yesterday although I can't get to the phone to see if any auto updates have been completed.
I went into clockwork and I was able to navigate though and wiped both cache and dalvik hoping that would clear it up. After reboot it was the same behavior.
Before I spend my entire Sunday wiping and reloading my phone can anyone give insight into this problem? Most of my searches for screen issues have popped up the general display problems with the greys and blotches.
ETA:
Not sure why my brain didn't process this first, but I am actually able to unlock the phone (sometimes) with widget locker. If I tap the screen outside of the status bar then the screen powers off. I can interact with the status bar but I can't click the screen to get the phone into USB storage mode so I can't get anything copied off. I'm going to do a recovery backup and re-install Juggernaut to see if that clears it up before I start thinking hardware issues.
Not really to experienced with an issue like that, but perhaps before you fully wipe you could backup and restore the same backup. I had a application issue that I couldn't fix and even though the backup would be the same somehow it fixed it.
Sorry I couldn't offer you more.
As far as the battery showing up, I see the screen all the time when it's shut off charging.

Last night I updated to the latest ics update so I'm on 4.0.4. I've noticed it shuts off by itself occasionally. Even now at work, phone is laying flat and it shut off once. Also this morning driving to work phone was on my dash and it shut off. Both times phone was in sleep mode and I didn't know it shut off completely until I tried to turn screen on with volume keys or power button. I would then of course have to hold down power button to start phone up again. I haven't rooted or anything , I'm stock. I've tried tapping the back by the battery to see if something was loose but nothing happened.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced the same. Will this go away when I start rooting and romming ,or do I have defective hardware?
So no-one? So far I looked online and someone mentioned putting paper under battery to hold it tighter against contacts? I'm trying that but not sure if it's making battery hotter. I'll see if that works.
Also called Google just in case I have to go through the returning process which I hope not to go through this is what they emailed me for my issue.
" Greetings and salutations,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today. Many issues can be resolved by performing a hard reset by removing the battery or by factory data resetting your device, but first I'd like you to try removing the battery, wiping it clean with lint free cloth, as well as the prongs that connect to the battery itself. Try this a few times, if it does not work this should. Be sure to backup any personal files you may have on the device.
To factory data reset your device, touch the Settings icon from your ‘Home’ or ‘All Apps’ screen, then select ‘Backup & reset’ under ‘Personal.’
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device 2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode 3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option 4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode 5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button. 6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset. 7. Select Yes -- delete all user data. 8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.

I better root and try a Rom asap huh?
I'd say get a replacement for it while you still can.
yeah getting a replacement could be the wisest thing to do
altho if when you received it in 4.0.1 it wasnt randomly shutting then something might've gone wrong with the update so you can unlock your bootloader and flash some ROMs to see how that goes
I definitely want to try some roms before I replace it as I have some time under Samsung's waranty. I also want to gently pull the contacts out a bit with small pliers to see if it holds the battery better. I'll even clean the contacts.
Man I'm hoping it's software ...

Gently pull the contacts out? Wouldn't that void your warranty? I'd be careful with the hardware if I were you.
Unless your battery contacts on the phone are smashed/deformed, it is unlikely that the battery connection is being physical broken at the contacts. The battery fits fairly snug in the compartment and the contacts stay touching even when the battery is partially removed. Probably no benefit to placing a piece of paper in there. Also keep in mind your NFC is in the battery.
I am also using a "Yakju" device from Google Play. No similar issue on 4.0.4 stock or CM9. At least not this nightly build : )
I actually got the GSM nexus yesterday and I had the exact same problem. The phone powered itself off twice. Once right after I turned it on and again about two hours later. Both times it occurred when I was moving around with the phone.
I pulled the battery and popped it back in a few times and it hasn't happened since.

You guys are probably right. The battery does already feel snug in there.
As I'm reading through forums for my issue, I can't believe how many sgn users are experiencing the same thing I am, some even reboots. Alot of them think it's apps. Good chance I'll exchange for the another device with same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is why Google dropped the price.
Can't wait to get home and mess with this more. Hopefully I can make it go away.
I had this same problem when I first got mine with random reboots an powering off by itself, after about 2 weeks the problem went away, don't ask me how it seem to magically go away by itself maybe because battery needed time to settle in with the charging process.

I'm happy to report, knock on wood, that after I factory reset the phone the problem seems to have gone away. Last night I used the toolkit to unlock bootloader and root, and I flashed cm9 nightly and all is good so far. My only problem now is I dont know which rom to try next
I definitely want something with led customizations like cm9 has, thats just so old school reminds me of a blackberry .
Any suggestions, I guess I can also ask elsewhere.

I use light flow. It also lets me customize both LED and audio notification per app

I had light flow going when my phone would shut itself off. It doesnt include alot of the apps I use to customize so I'm not the biggest fan of it now. I think the cm9 led customizations is sufficient as it lets you add any of your apps regardless.
Aokp has more features and is most popular so you could try that. Then try paradigm rom. I done use light flow, I just have a few led colors from stock and its enough for me for now. Google voice green, handcent texts blue, and Gmail and calls white. All from the stock apps.
Black ice is good so far. So many different variations of aokp roms I guess, its hard to recommend the "best" one.
I have a perplexing problem with two phones that I have. The issues is, when the phones go to sleep (either by timing out while on battery or when I hit the power button on the phone to turn off the screen), the CDMA radio will shut off after a while and won't turn back on until I perform one of the following:
1. Reboot
2. Make a phone call
3. Send a text message
4. Switch in and out of airplane mode.
I know when it's off because I will suddenly get a flood of text messages when I perform any of the above tasks.
I thought originally this was something wrong with my phone (maybe too much flashing), so I got another Galaxy Nexus (Sprint). Unfortunately, it does the same thing. If I keep it on a charger and do not turn the screen off, everything works fine.
The phones are a Galaxy Nexus that works with Sprint. Since I don't know when it happens, I captured a logcat of the phone overnight after I turned the screen off. The next morning, I had to dial out to "wake" the phone.
I have factory reset the phone, flashed another rom (it seems to happen to anything that was based on CM), All these have happened multiple times trying to fix the issue. I have wiped dalvik and cache with no avail. Is there something I'm not trying?
I tried looking around to see if anyone else had this problem, but came up empty.
Perhaps someone had had this problem as well and can direct me to a fix.

Thanks.
Twice this week my alarm didn't go off (luckily I set a backup today) because sometime throughout the night something happened. When I woke up the phone was frozen on the yellow Sprint Spark startup screen. I needed to pull the battery and everything started up fine. I updated to Lollipop about 2 weeks ago which is where I'm guessing the issues stem from.
Is there anything I should try other than restoring to factory and starting over? I'd prefer to not have to wipe everything from my phone but these issues are becoming problematic. I am not rooted.
Thanks.
You answered your own question. You need to try a factory reset. Problems happen when you upgrade to new software without wiping.

Dschachm is correct. Then if you root and install TWRP you can back it up with all of your apps and data. So if there is ever a problem again, just restore and done.
So I ended up doing a factory reset and while the phone certainly started running faster with better battery performance after the reset I'm still having this issue. I would say it occurs 2-3 times a week. It has only occurred overnight which is typically when I charge my phone so I'm pretty sure it is related to being left connected to the charger. The majority of the times I will wake up with a dim yellow Sprint screen and everything else frozen though occasionally the screen will be black with the led notification light red. In both situations the screen will not respond to any button pushes or holds and I need to pull the battery and then everything will start up fine.
Does anybody have any suggestions here on what I should do? I guess I can try and restore one more time and see but I don't really know why it would be different and it is certainly a pain to keep restoring the phone and losing all my settings. I definitely don't want to root now since I believe that voids the warranty and if I can't figure anything out with this I'll certainly be requesting a new phone from Sprint. Before I start dealing with Sprint though I thought I would check here first. Through all my searches on the internet I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this problem.
Thanks.
I've gotten the sprint yellow screen and nothing else.phone doesn't turn on? When I try turn it on after removing batteryou I get the android figure and phone turns off? How can I reboot or start the phone..?and can I save my contacts?
OK, I was with stock ROM, rooted only for use Samba File Share (I used this app for so many years on my old SII, I really like it) and was everything normal, until today, I opened the Facebook Messenger App, to send a message, and took a photo from my cat, then I received a Whatsapp message at the same time, I was aiming the camera, and the screen blinked for a sec, and the phone "freezes" - it was still showing the camera normal, but unresponsive to commands, I waited for 5 minutes, and then I forced reboot holding power + volume, and it restarted, the vib motor got stuck on, and Asus logo screen "booting" for many minutes, I waited until it restart it self again - this time everything loaded up normally - When I go to the main screen, I noticed that Messenger app was without Icon, with a SD card icon, like it was unloaded, I opened the Chrome for search, tried to reinstall the app, returned a error when installing, back to chrome, searching about it, and then the phone freezes again, crash Chrome, everything starts to crash, Google services, background services, everything, I was forced to restart - and then I got boot loop.
[email protected]%!, I tried to wipe cache, and nothing changed, so I did a wipe data, and the phone recovered fine (I think) still here installing apps, but now I'm worried. It was a random error, or maybe it will occur again? Could it be consequence from rooting? I'm on stock ROM, Lollipop 5.0 I think, could be a bug from this ROM?
Edit: I just checked, the phone still rooted even after wipe
Edit 2: I was thinking on a theory, I work with computer, repair etc, Ive seen this happening on notes.. I was thinking if the issue could be related to power problem. Like, the battery was 90% I think, but the screen was full bright, and I was using camera, and Messenger, and then I received a message on whatsapp, the screen blinked - maybe the power "failed" on the phone, and some process on background, on low level, got corrupted and it just got worse after phone processing it on background? Maybe? I dont know if it makes sense, maybe dont (?) haha
