Why would the next Nexus 7 continue with the NAV Bar? (Soft back, home, recent apps)
I owned the Nexus for a while and couldn't stand them.
You get alot more room with other 7 inch tablets without Nav Bar. New 7" Galaxy Tab 3 as a great example.
Just wanted to get some thoughts.

I like navbar more then capacitive buttons but that's just me. On my previous phone I had capacitive buttons and on my current phone I have the navbar and its more customizable and I find it nicer even if it does reduce my usable screen area. Personal preference? But I get my Note 8 tomorrow and I'm gonna have to get used to the hardware buttons again lol

Yea, i did like the customization.
I love my Note 8. Just need more development. Although, the lack of development is encouraging me to just create a rom for my self and share of course.
I would prefer a capacitive HOME button on my Note 8. Just seems strange to have a mixture of physical and capacitive, but it's my favorite so far.
One reason is it makes the tablet a little easier to hold. I find people unfamiliar with the Note will repeatedly hit the capacitive buttons by mistake.
Nexus style is better suited as a general purpose solution, it's independant of the hardware and it can adapt to whatever is evolved. No one in hardware space will care.
Classic style like the Galaxy Note 8.0 has an advantage for situations where feel replaces sight. For example in a Breffo Spiderpodium mounted to my cars center dash: I'm just as likely to hit the home key as I am the next song control with the Nexus 7. On my Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy S3, they are in totally different positions.
When it comes to the issue of menu and search keys, it's mostly debatable and depends mostly on application software and ROM.

Hey everyone, I'm currently using a Note but been reading about the Nexus and am considering switching to a Nexus.
Can anyone help me out? Just need some answers.
1. Screen size- I'm aware that the on screen buttons of the Nexus kinda steal away some of the screen area most of the time. So if you consider that and compare it to the screen of the GS2 which has capacitive buttons, which has the larger screen? Or are they just equal?
2. Applications on ICS- At the moment, do the following apps work on the Nexus?
Google Maps, Evernote, Any.do, Shazam, Voice Talk (or Voice Actions, sometimes I get confused between the two), Dropbox, and Skype (with video calls)?
3. For those who previously owned a GS2 and are now on a Nexus, which of the two phones have better signal reception?
All the other questions I had were answered in the other threads, I just need help with the above.
Any help will be appreciated.

1. It's slightly taller than the GS II screen but overall feels mostly the same.
2. I can confirm all work (though haven't tried Shazam since I use Soundhound )
3. My Nexus has infinitely better signal than the HD2 I had but I can't say regarding the GS II since I never used one day to day. (GSM since I don't live in the states).
Thanks. Is Voice Actions better now in recognizing commands?

Voice actions is getting way more accurate. I haven't had it transcribe something incorrectly yet.
Excellent. I guess the biggest factor for me now is just how much larger the screen is than the GS2. Coming from a Note obviously the Nexus has smaller screen estate. But I hope it has a larger screen area than the GS2.
When exactly do the onscreen buttons disappear? Am I right in assuming that the Nexus and the GS2 have the same screen areas because of the onscreen buttons?

The buttons only disappear in some video players such as mx player and I think Netflix now as well as YouTube. The screen size is probably similar to an sII with the buttons.

I've got the Nexus here as well as a Note (not much used) and my iPhone. Oh, and of course I know the S2 a little bit.
1.) If you compare the pure screen size, the Nexus is quite a bit "higher". But if you consider the on-screen buttons, the screen is nearly equal in size. The buttons can fade out … but they are usually there. They can also "fade out", like in the camera or gallery app, but still use the screen space.
Keep in mind, the resolution on the Nexus is a bit higher.
2.) Google Maps – check, stock ICS. Evernote – check, but I'm new to Evernote and haven't tested everything. Any.do, no idea. Shazam – check, but I only use the song recognition. Voice Talk/Actions, no idea. Dropbox – check. Skype – starts up, I rarely use it at all, so no idea.
3.) I can only say I had no reception problems with my GSM Nexus yet.
I can confirm Any.do as working
Basically I'm a Galaxy Note user but recently won a Google's contest for high-school programmers called Googel Code-in for which I and 9 others with one of their guardians were invited to Mountain View and San Francisco CA to their HQ (Googleplex) for a free trip of 4 days. At the last day of the trip they basically handed out a Galaxy Nexus for free, so I've switched to the Nexus for now and am looking forward to flashing ROMs and kernels!
Wow hope you enjoyed the experience and congratulations on the new nexus .

Noob question, onscreen soft menu buttons takes parts of the 4.65" screen or are beside that?

If the app is coded properly, like YouTube, the buttons disappear during full screen usage. Typically for videos. There are also mods and roms that make it possible to hide them at will.

When you say hide... video takes that part of the screen?
Im using a tablet with onscreen buttons (ics), and on apps like youtube, onscreen buttons change to a small dot for every button, but video wont take that part of the screen.
I know there are apps for properly hide the onscreen buttons, but Im curious how it works on gnexus.

In YouTube and NetFlix's case, the navigation bar hides on fullscreen video.
I took a quick video for a demonstration rather than digging through YouTube for ages:

My apologies for the rather poor image quality and shakycam effect.
Thanks, that video cleared all my doubts It´s not that bad as I was thinking.
Since you people talking about softkeys, I use AOKP for the sake of the Navbar height editing ! I make it small. To get more of the screen!
I hope the next nexus has a bigger screen...I'm an x note user too...And I got used to it's big screen. The Gnex looks small to me now even after 3 weeks of use...But to be honest, it runs ICS much better than the note. Nor than my X S2, and S1. This is the best performing device I have ever had to date...

Technically, Nexus was designed for ICS and it's perhaps the first device I've used which has native ICS that doesn't suck (Note has one too, but it sucks due to TW). I haven't used HTC One series phones so can't say, but they seem pretty fast too.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a stylus that works on the GS3, which offers the hovering capabilities as on the new Note II? Is there some sort of hardware that the Note II has which the S3 does not have, to allow this feature? Or is this simply part of the new TW JB?
See video here:

you won't be getting that on the gs3, it's a special technology.

ever been to a website with drop down menus when you hover over them with your mouse? Notice those layouts dont quite work right on capacitive touchscreen devices? Its possible on the Note 2 because of its active digitizer.
Lack of active digitizers in modern tablets is one of my biggest complaints and a big reason why I'm hard pressed to move away for my old Motion tablets and even my ancient tc1100. That and the mobile os.... Can't wait for MS Surface Pro. Thing will be awesome with Fedora.
Hi all. Although I love my android phone, I bought an iPad mini retina when they came out. I figured Apple's tablet experience is still best due to lack of a tablet ecosystem within android. But..... I just bought a Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 in hopes of getting rid of my ipad. It seemed as though android had caught up in the tablet world..
So far... I like the aspect ration/screen, the SD card slot, the office suite, and the keyboard (numbers and arrow keys ftw) BUT
Apples tablet still responds better to touch. I constantly find myself clicking on things instead of scrolling within chrome with my galaxy.
Apples app ecosystem is still far ahead of android.... I love my android phone, but tablet apps are lacking.
Those damn buttons on the bottom of the galaxy.... Jesus. I am always accidentally clicking the back button.
Do I like the galaxy? Yes. Do I love it? No.... I think I may bring it back to best buy, but wanted others' thoughts. I really want an android tablet for the features I mentioned above, but I don't think it's there yet.

As far as the button problem, if you're rooted you can disable the capacitive buttons & add softkeys instead. That's what I've done. Way better.
I haven't had an issue with touch sensitivity so I can't comment on that.
Androids tablet ecosystem gets better every day but it'll probably still be awhile before it catches up to iOS.
I personally love mine, even moreso than the iPad Mini w/ Retina.

I'd like to do this too, especially for landscape, I keep hitting them with palm of hand when using the keyboard with thumbs, especially when stretching towards the middle of the keyboard.
How did you do it and is it easily disable-able?
I think I'm going to try rooting. I'll keep the thread going to post conclusion. Any other thoughts or opinions? I bought my super millionair boss' Christmas presents using my best buy card. I'm a elite plus member or someyhing because if it, with a 45 day return policy. I want too keep experimenting.
I'm actually testing out both the iPad mini retina and the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. The iPad mini wins for me in terms of battery life and performance. But that's about it. One thing I hate though is that if there is no tablet app, iphone apps look terrible on the screen. I like the fact that all apps on the tab use the full screen real estate. So using the Instagram App or the Best Buy app on the mini sucks. I'm also having issues with some of the tablet optimized apps just not working as well on the mini. For example the slingbox iPad app refuses to play in HD on my mini while the phone version of the app on my Tab plays perfectly.
The Tab screen looks so much better than the retina mini. I also like the size of the tab more. And of course the customization options are endless. And I think at this point in my life I prefer Android.
I'm also and elite member at best buy and have time to play around. But I think the mini is going back. As much as I love the battery life it's not enough to deter me. I could never choose the iPad mini over the tab. The only option is to keep both or keep the tab alone.

Anyone jumping on the Note 4 train later in the year? I am sure we can safely assume that the specs will be top of the line.
Probably SD 805
Might even be 4GB of RAM
I may but it will depend on the actual phone once it is released. The biggest deciding factor for me will be how locked down it is.
Antutu benchmarks revealed a 2K display, which is insanely good, I would wait and see how the phone first turns out to be. The display alone is a large upgrade also the newer TW shouldn't be as bloated and more stable + better looking. So probably.
The N3 is basically perfect in my eyes, so the N4 will have to be a pretty significant improvement for me to cash in my upgrade. If they take away the home button, that'll be a definite dealbreaker for sure.
Had the N2 and N3 and will more than likely get the N4.
I buy a phone now ~every six months or so, but no guarantee it will be the Note 4 unless it's the best phone at the time. I'm about due, so they better hurry up.

haha I was thinking the exact opposite - the only only thing I have disliked about the Note3 and GS3 coming from my 1st smartphone (LG g2x) was the hardware home button. I loved the clean 4-soft-key setup from my old LG.
If Samsung made a Note4 for me that was just a Note3 with all softkeys I'd buy it in a heartbeat :silly:
I will be JUMPing as soon as t-mobile lets me.
ya like hardware soft keys too, on screen and hardware keys are a no no
I've had every Note since the N7000/i717 (had both of those) and the N3 is end of the line for me. It's been good but Samsung hates developers and it'll take too long to get a solid device tree for non-TW roms.
Will probably be going with an iPhone or a new Nexus phone instead.
How dare you mention iPhone on xda ?

There are only a few things I can think of right now that I really hate about the Note 3, and the Home button (Samsung, it's not an iPhone, and even the iPhone does it better anyway!) has to be #1.
The idiotic "drip" noise that replaced actual dialing tones, and touch sounds (audible feedback) is probably second. I had fixed the touch sounds while rooted when I was on NB4, but I upgraded to NF1 without looking up how to retain root first and Towelroot no longer works, so now I'm stuck with just turning those sounds off. I have never found a fix for the dialing tones short of replacing the dialer with a 3rd party one.
I also don't like the S-Voice or My Magazine, since they take up a otherwise useful button and can't be disabled without root (and disabling My Magazine causes double tapping the home button to crash the TW launcher).
But even with all that said, I still hate the home button first and foremost.
Will probably get the Note 4 if it supports band 12. Will come in handy up here in the North East when they deploy 700 mhz.

I'm actually looking to see what Samsung does with the next generation of the Galaxy Mega 6.3. What stopped me from buying that was the low-end specs. I didn't even mind the 720p screen.
Now if Sammy can see it in their hearts to bump the specs so that it is responsive, then the next Mega will probably be my next phone.
I will get it if it comes with no Knox crap
I will... I like to be up to date with my gadgets besides note 3 is sooo last year ?
