Cm10 is my favorite rom on the market and I feel its the fastest and smoothest thing you can get as well as adding some very functional features. With any other phone, I would without a doubt be doing everything in my power to install cm10. The note is in a different category however. The note 2 has added functionality in its touchwiz rom that allows for running multiple applications on the screen at the same tine, as well as s pen features such as taking a screen shot and then drawing right onto it.
For those of you that have installed cm10 or other non touchwiz rom, do you miss any of the touchwiz features?
Of course they do.........
but everyone is different the features that they miss still may not be enough to drop CM10 its light and fast and def has its advantages......
i personally on the note will only use TW based roms, i like the features added in it this time around.
I am curious about this. 4.2 has new features I'm excited about, so I'm curious how CM10.1 will turn out. I know the nightly is still fairly new, but I'd like to hear what people say about it, and I'm especially curious if it's possible to port (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term) over that Samsung's TouchWiz has, such as S Note and the ability to trigger it to open when the S Pen is removed.
I can never go back to a touchwiz ROM. I never use the s pen, never use multi window, and I despise the capacitive buttons since my palm always triggers them in landscape. The customizable navbar and spell check are my main reasons for using cm10

If you never use the S-Pen or multi-window, what was the reason you got the Note II versus other phablet-style devices?

What phones are you referring to? The phone is pretty much the top of the line as far as hardware is concerned and if your locked into a carrier your options are even more limited.

There's the Droid DNA, the Spectrum II, the Optimus, even the Nexus 4 and S3. These are all 4.7+ high-resolution (720p or FullHD) devices that I consider competition with the Note II. The main draw and defining feature of the Note II is the S-Pen. If it wasn't for the S-Pen combined with the 5.5" display and Touchwiz software, I probably would not have considered it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phablet
5.5 inch screen and the quad Samsung processors and very nice screen is some very good reasons to go to note 2 versus any of the other phones even if you don't use spen.

Nobody was telling anybody how they should like their phone. I was simply wondering why somebody would buy the Note II and not use (or even be interested in) it's defining feature.
To me, that's like buying a convertible and never putting the top down, or buying a Boss 302 Mustang and not tracking it. Just doesn't make sense to me.
PS: I fixed your spelling mistakes.

I purchased the Note 2 for the screen size, 2GB of RAM, and Quad Core Exynos. The S-Pen is interesting but I almost never use it and didn't factor it in when making my purchase.

I agree. The S-pen comes in handy for certain things, especially notes, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would.
I had a Treo 750 (came with a stylus) some years ago, the beginning of smartphones. Just having the stylus made things easier. The stylus didn't make the phone it just complemented it IMO. Same with this one only its way advanced and almost part of the phone, again a great thing but not necessary.
I would like to see some type of CM10/TW Hybrid or something that will keep the "cool" features of TW and the S-pen. Maybe someday lol
The DROID dna has some nice hardware but the lack of an sd card slot is a huge turnoff for me. With games coming out being 2+gb its totally unacceptable to be stuck with only 16gb of storage. This also kills the nexus 4 for me. The spectrum 2 SoC sports a weaker gpu and has a smaller screen so that's no competition in my eyes. The Optimus G is competition and S4 with the Adreno 320 gpu seems to edge out the notes 2's SoC but I'm in favor the 5.5 screen and have not had the the best experience with LG phones. The note 2's battery life beats the Optimus G and the Note 2 takes better video if you care about that sort of thing. As far as pictures are concerned the LG has a higher mp rear camera but it doesn't seem to produce better quality images and the front facing camera on the LG is a lower mp camera. The Spen is a nice feature but I like having CM 10/ASOP so that I can have pdroid. If your not familiar with pdroid look it up as it is a great app.
I chose the Note II over the S III for the S-Pen. And, at the time, the multi-view. I want the big screen and big battery and the best performance. But I also want the TouchWiz features. Smart stay, smart alert, pop up play, multi-view, S beam, AllShare Cast, none of that will work on CM10, or AOKP (at least not at the performance TouchWiz will give). I wanted the best Android hardware, and (IMO) the best Android software. If I wanted AOKP more than I wanted TouchWiz I would have a nexus 4, or Galaxy nexus. After the One X I don't plan on buying another HTC device, and the Thrill turned me off LG. Samsung is the only Android OEM I trust for solid hardware and software support after the device ships.
I use the S-Pen just about every time I use my device. I thought after a while the novelty would wear off and I would stop using it. But, I find I enjoy it quite a bit. The only reason I rooted and flashed another ROM was to get multi view. As an added benefit I get to keep all the TouchWiz features I use constantly, and I get to resolve my only two complaints with TouchWiz: more icons on the stock launcher (and keep page buddy), and to choose and re-order the Notification toggles. I can think of many reasons to stay on TouchWiz, but I can't think of a single reason to go on an AOSP based ROM. For me, I don't plan on even trying CM10 or AOKP on this device, even though I couldn't stand running anything else on my One X or S II.

Ironically for me, I bought the Note 2 for the screen and hardware. I knew spen, multi window, and some other features for me would be gimmicks. The ironic part is, that although I rarely use them, for some reason that is why I'm staying on Tw instead of CM10. I rarely use the spen, but I love having those options. I just don't really see how the spen makes anything easier or more efficient. That being said, I love that stupid thing anyway. I considered Nexus 4 but liked removable battery and bigger screen much better.

I think raduque has a bit of a point. Some people, such as myself, like some of the features TW has associated with the S Pen. Some can care less, as many have you stated. For you guys who don't care about the S Pen features, CM10 the way it is now might work out for you. For those of us who do want some of the S Pen features, hopefully it's something as simple as copying some of the APKs containing those features and porting them over. (I wouldn't know the process yet. I haven't even rooted my phone as of yet.) I can personally care less about the TW launcher, itself, since I use and really like Go Launcher EX, but that said, I'd still like to be able to use the S Pen features, like S Notes, Air View, etc.
But then there's features that I'm not sure whether or not comes from TW that I like, such as Quick Glance, Direct Call, Smart Alert, Turn Over to Mute/Pause, Palm Swiping to Screenshot, Palm Touch to Mute/Pause, etc...

All these features are built into the core Touchwiz UX. They could be put in AOSP/AOKP, but so far nobody seems to be interested in coding in those features.
I use most of those features daily, and I'm always scribbling something down in Snote.
Not to mention I find the default Google-stock Android theme to be flat and boring.
I've had my Note II for almost three months now. I love it! It's quite the beast in terms of many things, mainly the gorgeous screen, the snappy performance, and the AMAZING battery life.
However, I've rarely used the S-Pen. I've mainly used it to show it off to my friends who (a) were curious about it; (b) wanted to try it; or (c) were going to buy a Note II themselves (or at least planning to). I've used it a few times to scribble quick notes here and there, but aside from that, the S-Pen is tucked in nice and safe inside my Note II probably 95% of the time.
So my question is: would you have purchased a Note II even without the S-Pen and its related features (S-Note, AirView, etc.)??
Discuss.
No i dont think i would've gotten the note 2 if it didnt have the spen I'd just buy the galaxy s3...
Idk how you don't use it.other than notes i love to doodle and use it for browsing
It's nice to have but by no means a deal maker for me, I just wanted a different phone to iPhone. iPhone 5 was nice, but not different enough to justify keeping it.
The S-pen is definitely a major reason for me getting the Note 2. I would have just went with a different phone otherwise, possibly the S3. There are always times where I wish I had a stylus, but the broad point ones never did it for me. This device will finally give me a stylus that does what I want, which is to have a fine tip and to react as if I were writing on a piece of paper. I may not use it all the time, but I'm sure it will get pulled out at least a few times a week.
I purchased the Note 2 because of the spen. I was using my ipad to write work notes ( I've been paperless for years) , and the note had completely replaced it and it offers me convenience and portability on top of that. I haven't touched my pc or ipad in over two months. My note 2 does it all!
My next (insert gadget here) will be the Note 3.

Take a look at GMD s-pen control on play store. With that you never need to touch your screen with fingers anymore. Been using it for few weeks now and it i a fantastic.

I love GMD spen gesture controlling app.
Samsung has made things in these phones that the finger touch will not work when spen is on screen. It's pretty much super and useful. But, I saw GMD gesture controlling app working while I'm writing in the screen with spen. It's an error. But here I'm not asking you to fix it. I appreciate it, because you could do it with your app. Now what I need is that, air view feature without spen. The Note series models (NOTE2, 10.1,8) uses the same features that xperia sola or today's release, s4 for the air view. So I think that Samsung had restricted finger air view feature for the promotion of spen, same as restricting finger touch while s pen in use. Since GMD gesture controlling app could remove the restriction of finger touch while spen in use, I hope that you could do this too(air view without spen). so I request you to try it. So can you?
I guess bumping up the touch sensitivity could do it.
But there are two problems:
1. I don't know if the sensitivity on our device can go that high.
2. There is no supported software. You won't get previews as the software on the Note 2 is build for Air View by the S Pen, and would not recognize Air View with a finger.
But, s4 has same technology..

But, s4 and note 2 shows same software features in air view. S4 is by hand and note2 by s pen. Also, the technology is same. What I guess is that Samsung would make it happen in next update. But I wish to get it early. The update will take2 months or so long. They will need s4 to click the ground.
Take a look at this thread

Edit: Most of the features announced for the S4 will not come to previous devices like Note I & II and the S3. Not officially anyway, because that would harm S4 sales.
So...don't count on official airview on the Note 2, ever.
Maybe Note 3!

But the software wouldn't know what to do with the finger hovering, devs will need to rewrite parts (if possible, I'm not sure) so the app would pop the text/image/anything else.

No it's not the truth. If companies fear such type of sale affection, apple wouldn't have provided the iOS6 update for previous iPhone models. The note 2 released with unique multi window feature and see currently the previous released s3 and note 1 got it. Also, if Samsung fears the affection for their super phone, then they wouldn't have released the galaxy grand. We should think things in the other way, if the update bring same features of s4 to note 2, n2 is going to be the best with unique spen features. It may affect the sales of s4, but it never affect the profit if Samsung. Whatever the model is, phone is of Samsung's.

The S3 does not have air view.
@OP
Note 2 is bigger and has double the RAM of the S3. Plus the S- Pen.
So they have no fear to also boost S3 a bit as well.
But the S3 and S4 do not have many differences in hardware with each other so Samsung has to make them a bit different also software wise as well as hardware wise because the hardware is not improved enough for an S3 owner to make the jump.
This is my thinking.

Hi guys, sorry if this has already been asked, but I have searched, and searched, and searched for the answer to no avail.....
Does the Note 8 run tablet apps or phone apps? - mainly interested in document editing for revision and general notes etc. that is, is the note 8 a big Note 2/3 or a little Note 10.1
Reason I'm asking is I'm trying to decide between 2014 10.1 and, to me, the more useful note 8 (portability is a big thing), I'm heavily invested in android phone apps and like the functionality but need a bit more productivity potential - Note 2 is just too small for my uses. The 10.1 2014 looks perfect for what I need - other than the size, if the note 8 is close, software wise, that would be the perfect device for me. Screen res doesn't really matter too much as I'm fairly happy with the low res ipad2 and both Are better!
I've got a Note 2 and use it in preference to my ipad 2 for note taking But I'm a bit fed up with the fact that in S-Note, when exported, the font has to be really big (so that you can read it on the note 2). Most of my reading is done on the ipad (size does matter sometimes) but that is all, so I tend to write on Note 2 and export for reading (revision) to an app called Notability (which I dearly wish would come to android). I think, correct me if I'm wrong, I'll be able to write smaller relative to the page on either the note 8 or 10.1, and hence exports will be better proportioned
Ultimately, I'm looking to dump the ipad for one device just having difficulty deciding which (and learn to give up notability and clash of clans lol)
Looking forward to the day that samsung release a program that allows you to properly sync s-note to PC as well - very surprised this hasn't happened yet!
Thanks for your time, if this IS a repeated question, direction to an answer. The question is are the apps tablet or phone, the rest is just a bit of background so you know why I'm asking, sorry if I waffle

The Note 8.0 with 3G or LTE can be used as a phone without any trouble, as long as you dont mind looking like a strange person with a 8 inch phone to your ear (or just use a headset ). It does not have a tablet UI, since the notificationbar comes down from the top, not the lower right corner.
As for the S-Note parts, i write in handwriting on the Note 8.0 and when i had the ported S-Note for my S3 i had no trouble reading the notes on that screen, even tho its smaller than the Note II with the same resolution.
I say dump the iPad for notes and such, and keep playing the games that are there, cuz there are some nice ones, like Clash of Clans

Yeah, at native size the s-note files are fine. Unfortunately most of my notes were originally in iPad Natability format - these can be exported as PDF but need to zoom to read - a right royal pain in the ... Good to know 8 has better result
Wasn't going to use 8 as a phone, got note II for that, but good to know it uses the phone apps - all I want really is a bigger note II as it works well for me. Time to squirrel away a little pennies (and persuade the better half she really wants an ipad 2 lol)

Interesting, wonder what other "tablet format" apps work on 8 (without root)
I'm not an expert but I think the Note 8 works fine as both phone and tablet.
I will get a phone SIM in a few days and see how it works. I have had a data only and this is fine.
Notifications coming from top keeps the eco system right with our phones. Actually I like it better on the top.
Whatever programs that I used on my ThinkPad Tablet seem to work fine on the Note.
I do email, read (Kindle), movies and have just installed Documents to Go which is my big productivity suite.
The OCR is very good and much faster for me that "typing" on the tablet.
I think the Note 8 is a winner though 32/64 GB RAM should have been stock.
I'm assuming you live in the US. There are different versions of the Note 8, some have built in telephony. The N5100 is basically an 8 inch smartphone. Its not carrier supported but works on T-mobile and ATT HSPA network. The SCH i467 is sold by ATT and works on their LTE network. It has the telephony capabilities removed, phone calling can only be done using VoIP. There are other models of the Note 8, but these two are the best choices for the US.

Galaxy Note 8.0 Xposed Build JDQ39.N5120XXCMG7 / Baseband N5120XXBMD9 / Kernel CivZ-SpherEngine-Rev1.2 on Telstra LTE
Because the Note 8 has the button in portrait mode apps seem to display more like a phone.
I had the same question recently, and this is what I've discovered.
Android basically has 3 types of interfaces.
There is the phone interface, the small tablet interface, and the full tablet interface.
If you look at the Nexus 4, 7, and 10, you can see the differences. The Nexus 7 interface is kind of a blend between the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10. There are some features and programs that look like the phone interface, and other features and programs that use the full tablet interface.
As an 8 inch tablet, the Galaxy Note 8.0 uses the "small tablet" interface that the Nexus 7 does.
My Note 8 is starting to get old, and I would love to upgrade it to higher resolution and more storage, but keeping it about the same size. Until now I haven't found any possible replacements with an active pen, but this might be one:

Do any of you have any opinions on this as a possible replacements? It's a different pen technology so that concerns me, but it if works as well with Lecture Notes it should be good enough. If it has more offset or more lag, it would drive me nuts. I know ROMs are unlikely, but since I use it as a BYOD work device I can't root it anyway, so thar shouldn't matter. We're not getting updates on our device either so no difference if this one doesn't either.
What do you think? Worth buying or should I wait?

Thanks, but those won't work for me since I'm looking to continue to use an active pen and Lecture Notes. The Nvidia pen has a rubber tip, it doesn't look good for writing in very small print which is 99% of what I need it for, otherwise that might be an option. Windows tablets are not an option for me as my company won't allow them on our BYOD plan (yet). So the only option I've found so far is this HP tablet, but I'm not sure about that one either so I'm looking to see what people think about it, especially if people notice potential issues with it.

Wait for the upgraded note 8.
Never go with windows 8.1 8 inch tablet, it have terrible scaling and reading through is a pain in the arse with high resolution. Android still the one with best scaling.
Another option is HP's Pro Slate 8, though i dont know about battery life with that resolution & availability+price unless u living in the us.
I am in the US and considering the HP tablet, but would wait for an upgraded Note 8 if there was a sign of Samsung actually continuing it. It's been over two years since our tablet was released so I'm losing faith that it will have a successor. Are there any rumors of a nww Note 8?

HP Pro Slate 8 might seem to be a very good choice if you couldnt wait for note 8 successor. High end spec, high resolution display & that HP duet pen technology. Still, not sure if it's using wacom or n-trig digitizer or proprietory one. Im worried if some app doesnt support pressure registration through its digitizer. But nonetheless seem pretty good enough

Hi,
Please try Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact SGP 621 LTE model (this is one of the models that has SIM capability)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...oliid=I29M436THUKIIJ&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_ttl
RAM:3GB
Display: 8 inch FHD
16 GB inbuilt memory with microSD card slot
Snapdragon 801 Adreno 330
Bluetooth v4.0
WIFI
4G LTE
Camera - 8 MP and 2 MP
Battery 4500
NFC
Nano - Sim
OS - Kitkat (it came with kitkat for me)
Build Quality - Amazing and it is thin but still feels great in your hands.
Stylus - doesn't come with stylus like Note 8.0 but ....
1) Display is pretty nice.
2) Sound quality is good. (after rooting viper4android works great)
3) It is much lighter than Note 8.0 and you can feel the difference when you use the tablet.
4) Bluetooth and WIFI are fast and stable.
5) Camera is decent, good for a tablet.
6) it has ps4 remote play which allows you to connect to your playstation using wifi something similar to Nvidia Shield does.
7) Battery life is brilliant (outstanding results even without using power saving mode)
Android lollipop works great on Sony Z3TC. It is extremely smooth.I use my tablet daily and I can tell you that it won't give you any headaches or problems. So you are rest assured that you wont find any lag. 3GB of RAM along with Android Lollipop 5.0.2 is really a great combination on this tablet. Currently I am using rooted android 5.0.2 on mine. And I am using 64GB microSD card. I think it might support even more.
I understand you want stylus. Even I was looking for tablets with stylus that has all around capabilities like Note 8.0 which is a champion and unique device. But I wasn't convinced with the tablets available until I found Sony Xperia Z3TC. Other than stylus Sony xperia Z3TC does everything else brilliantly.
I don't have Nano sim nor I have access to 4G LTE but from other user reviews it is evident that there are many satisfied customers who reported good 4G/LTE performance.
My Note 8.0 is more than 2 years old ( bought it in June 2013) and till today it is still gives me around 9 hours of SOT in 4 days on an average. My Sony Xperia Z3TC is giving me between 9.5 to 11 of SOT on one single charge in 5/6 days without using power saving mode. Both tablets are absolutely brilliant.Samsung got it right with Note 8.0 and Sony with Z3TC.You can get any where between 9.5 to 11 hours of SOT in 4 to 8 days .You can check in Sony xperia z3 tablet compact section on XDA almost every member will report similar or better results. Some guys are even getting 6 and half hours of SOT at 50%. It is an excellent device for video playback and music.I love both the tablets.
Here is the link to my post where I have attached some screenshots of the battery life of my Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
And regarding stylus I feel we can try to get a stylus separately because this tablet is too good to be ignored.
I would highly recommend Sony xperia Z3TC to anyone who is looking for an excellent tablet successor to our beloved Note 8.0. So please have a look at the link I mentioned above. You won't be disappointed. Sony xperia Z3TC has 5/5 rating on amazon and even with the critics.
It is worth a look especially with a price tag of 489$ from a branded company like Sony.
Cheers!
It's looking like there will not be a next generation Note 8. We'll be forced to choose between a mid range tablet with an S pen (Tab A Plus) or a high end tablet without a stylus (S2).
My N5100, is wearing out (as my primary phone, it's been dropped a few too many times). But I haven't seen the international Tab A 8.0 S Pen variant with LTE for sale yet. I hope it's released soon!
OMG! This device fans can't seem to move one.
I'm also waiting for it's successor.. The S-pen is amazing
Well, I can't find a good replacement too, so I decided my Note 8 will stay with me some more time: I have just changed the battery and now it's ready for 2 more years of hard work

My battery is dying and I was curious where you got the battery from (which site). I've cracked the case before so I'm assuming that it's a pretty easy install. Thanks!

It has a terrible screen resolution.
In the 2 years I've owned an N5100, I've grown dependent on the S Pen. I have not been looking forward to replacing it, but I knew it would be necessary so I bought the Tab A Plus (stylus + cellular radio). It just arrived, so I'm still in the process of setting it up and making comparisons between the two. Physically they're almost identical in size, though the A is thinner than the 8. Stylistically, the A is made out of plastic, but its looks mimic the iPad. The screen is decent (but the A and 8 don't hold a candle to current hi res tablets). The S Pen pulls some tricks from the current Note phones that were never brought to the 8. Based on my experience so far, I'd say it's a suitable replacement for those that must have a stylus.

Overall, I still like the Tab A. There are some things which can't be changed. The screen's aspect ratio is different and a few of my apps don't look good. S-Pen input is not precise as the Note- its fine for writing but won't generate the fine art that was able to be produced on the Note. The camera is not as good wrt no voice commands and colors are not as true. The headphone jack is now on the bottom (why?!?).
There are a few annoyances related to Lollipop and/or how it integrates with Touchwiz. The ability for the app drawer to list items alphabetically is gone. I fixed this by installing Apex launcher. There's now a high volume warning popup (common on many devices, but the Note didn't have it). The Samsung dialer apk does something weird which launches two keypads. Even worse, it requires double tapping during a phone call. From what I've read online, this isn't an issue on all Samsung devices (it may not even be an issue on all Tab A), but it is on mine. Fixing this will require root, which I haven't done yet.
On the positive side, S-Note is more flexible. I really like air control, particularly action memo. Battery life is good and the battery manager app has two power saving modes. The thinner bezels make the Tab A look sleek and modern, although my thumbs occasionally make inadvertent inputs.
