Cm10 is my favorite rom on the market and I feel its the fastest and smoothest thing you can get as well as adding some very functional features. With any other phone, I would without a doubt be doing everything in my power to install cm10. The note is in a different category however. The note 2 has added functionality in its touchwiz rom that allows for running multiple applications on the screen at the same tine, as well as s pen features such as taking a screen shot and then drawing right onto it.
For those of you that have installed cm10 or other non touchwiz rom, do you miss any of the touchwiz features?

but everyone is different the features that they miss still may not be enough to drop CM10 its light and fast and def has its advantages......
i personally on the note will only use TW based roms, i like the features added in it this time around.
I am curious about this. 4.2 has new features I'm excited about, so I'm curious how CM10.1 will turn out. I know the nightly is still fairly new, but I'd like to hear what people say about it, and I'm especially curious if it's possible to port (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term) over that Samsung's TouchWiz has, such as S Note and the ability to trigger it to open when the S Pen is removed.
I can never go back to a touchwiz ROM. I never use the s pen, never use multi window, and I despise the capacitive buttons since my palm always triggers them in landscape. The customizable navbar and spell check are my main reasons for using cm10

What phones are you referring to? The phone is pretty much the top of the line as far as hardware is concerned and if your locked into a carrier your options are even more limited.

There's the Droid DNA, the Spectrum II, the Optimus, even the Nexus 4 and S3. These are all 4.7+ high-resolution (720p or FullHD) devices that I consider competition with the Note II. The main draw and defining feature of the Note II is the S-Pen. If it wasn't for the S-Pen combined with the 5.5" display and Touchwiz software, I probably would not have considered it.

Nobody was telling anybody how they should like their phone. I was simply wondering why somebody would buy the Note II and not use (or even be interested in) it's defining feature.
To me, that's like buying a convertible and never putting the top down, or buying a Boss 302 Mustang and not tracking it. Just doesn't make sense to me.

I purchased the Note 2 for the screen size, 2GB of RAM, and Quad Core Exynos. The S-Pen is interesting but I almost never use it and didn't factor it in when making my purchase.

I agree. The S-pen comes in handy for certain things, especially notes, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would.
I had a Treo 750 (came with a stylus) some years ago, the beginning of smartphones. Just having the stylus made things easier. The stylus didn't make the phone it just complemented it IMO. Same with this one only its way advanced and almost part of the phone, again a great thing but not necessary.
I would like to see some type of CM10/TW Hybrid or something that will keep the "cool" features of TW and the S-pen. Maybe someday lol
The DROID dna has some nice hardware but the lack of an sd card slot is a huge turnoff for me. With games coming out being 2+gb its totally unacceptable to be stuck with only 16gb of storage. This also kills the nexus 4 for me. The spectrum 2 SoC sports a weaker gpu and has a smaller screen so that's no competition in my eyes. The Optimus G is competition and S4 with the Adreno 320 gpu seems to edge out the notes 2's SoC but I'm in favor the 5.5 screen and have not had the the best experience with LG phones. The note 2's battery life beats the Optimus G and the Note 2 takes better video if you care about that sort of thing. As far as pictures are concerned the LG has a higher mp rear camera but it doesn't seem to produce better quality images and the front facing camera on the LG is a lower mp camera. The Spen is a nice feature but I like having CM 10/ASOP so that I can have pdroid. If your not familiar with pdroid look it up as it is a great app.
I chose the Note II over the S III for the S-Pen. And, at the time, the multi-view. I want the big screen and big battery and the best performance. But I also want the TouchWiz features. Smart stay, smart alert, pop up play, multi-view, S beam, AllShare Cast, none of that will work on CM10, or AOKP (at least not at the performance TouchWiz will give). I wanted the best Android hardware, and (IMO) the best Android software. If I wanted AOKP more than I wanted TouchWiz I would have a nexus 4, or Galaxy nexus. After the One X I don't plan on buying another HTC device, and the Thrill turned me off LG. Samsung is the only Android OEM I trust for solid hardware and software support after the device ships.
I use the S-Pen just about every time I use my device. I thought after a while the novelty would wear off and I would stop using it. But, I find I enjoy it quite a bit. The only reason I rooted and flashed another ROM was to get multi view. As an added benefit I get to keep all the TouchWiz features I use constantly, and I get to resolve my only two complaints with TouchWiz: more icons on the stock launcher (and keep page buddy), and to choose and re-order the Notification toggles. I can think of many reasons to stay on TouchWiz, but I can't think of a single reason to go on an AOSP based ROM. For me, I don't plan on even trying CM10 or AOKP on this device, even though I couldn't stand running anything else on my One X or S II.

Ironically for me, I bought the Note 2 for the screen and hardware. I knew spen, multi window, and some other features for me would be gimmicks. The ironic part is, that although I rarely use them, for some reason that is why I'm staying on Tw instead of CM10. I rarely use the spen, but I love having those options. I just don't really see how the spen makes anything easier or more efficient. That being said, I love that stupid thing anyway. I considered Nexus 4 but liked removable battery and bigger screen much better.

I think raduque has a bit of a point. Some people, such as myself, like some of the features TW has associated with the S Pen. Some can care less, as many have you stated. For you guys who don't care about the S Pen features, CM10 the way it is now might work out for you. For those of us who do want some of the S Pen features, hopefully it's something as simple as copying some of the APKs containing those features and porting them over. (I wouldn't know the process yet. I haven't even rooted my phone as of yet.) I can personally care less about the TW launcher, itself, since I use and really like Go Launcher EX, but that said, I'd still like to be able to use the S Pen features, like S Notes, Air View, etc.
But then there's features that I'm not sure whether or not comes from TW that I like, such as Quick Glance, Direct Call, Smart Alert, Turn Over to Mute/Pause, Palm Swiping to Screenshot, Palm Touch to Mute/Pause, etc...

All these features are built into the core Touchwiz UX. They could be put in AOSP/AOKP, but so far nobody seems to be interested in coding in those features.
I use most of those features daily, and I'm always scribbling something down in Snote.
Not to mention I find the default Google-stock Android theme to be flat and boring.

I was in the same dilemma as well. If you don't mind the size, the Note 2 is the better choice. The Nexus 4 may get the faster updates but we're on xda anyway so pretty much any phone with a good community will get updates.
Personally, if I had a choice between those 2 phones, I would prefer the Note 2. I'm a bit biased because I've been with Samsung for so long and I don't trust any other brand other than them. LOL. But from an unbiased point, the Nexus 4 provides faster updates (as mentioned), the Krait processor, and it's Google. Note 2 has a bunch of useful features and now we have some very reputable and brilliant developers in our community which will jump start our development. There's even an Android 4.2 (WIP) coming for us!

Did you ask this same question in the Nexus 4 section? lol...It's gonna be hard to get an unbiased opinion when you ask a question like that in a section specifically for one of the phones
Having said that, I had the LG Optimus G, and aside from the LG skin (which wasn't TOO horrible) it was a good phone, but I still promptly exchanged it for a Note 2 and don't regret it one bit. I have never had good experiences with LG phones. The display was beautiful though.
I have a note 2 and my buddy has a nexus 4. I thought the nexus 4 screen looks way better then note 2 screen hands down in my opinion. The build quality and feel of nexus 4 is also much better. However no removable battery no lte, and no sd card support are major deal breakers. 16gb is just not enough with games and apps installed. At least if they made a 32gb version.

The nexus 4 has some attractive points. LTE maybe less of an issue if you in Canada. The screen is nice and it's a fast performer.
But for me the lack of MicroSD and non-removable is a no go for me. Not only is battery life on the Note 2 awesome, but I have a spare battery i can use if every needed. I also really like having the s pen and the 5.5" screen i greatly enjoy. The size of the note is not for everyone, I'm OK with it.
You have to decide how important each of these factors are to you. Once you do that I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice.
If note 2 was made by LG and nexus 4 by Samsung, I'd say go for nexus 4...
Personally I'm staying away from anything LG, I had enough gray hair with LG Nitro HD, thank you very much.

I need more time before trying LG again. The guy at the AT&T store tried to get me to buy the Optimus G when the Note was not in stock yet. The nexus might be okay if LG isn't responsible for the software.

When you ask such question in Note 2 forum, my feeling is that you are going to get some bias answer.
I have both phones, and I think both phone are top notch in their own way. Here's what I think:
Nexus 4
- Very solid build, the construction is as solid as iPhone. Feels great in hand.
- The display does produce some relatively accurate colour compare to my IPS displays. I do a lot of photo editing/viewing. On the other hand, the sAMOLED does throw the colour off a bit by over saturated (nature of AMOLED), with the "natural" profile on Note2, it does become closer to real colour. Pixel density on the N4 is also better, but it's not critical as the Note 2 display is pretty sharp with the sAMOLED HD.
- AOSP, AOSP, AOSP! If you aren't a fan of Touchwiz, this is what you should keep. Not just the updates, as they don't come everyday. It's the user experience. Samsung does add a lot of neat feature that many can't live without, but in my honest opinion, AOSP does provide a nice layout and great feature out the box. I am also not a huge fan of Samsung's oversized UI, either.
- Believe it or not, the on screen button is a very important "feature" of N4 - You now have a place to put your thumb when you hold the phone, especially when passing the phone to people to show them stuff...without accidentally touching any of the buttons. However, also because of the on screen button, you do lose some screen estate.
- Buttery smooth, yes, smoother than the "more powerful" Note 2
- The price - You are indeed getting a lot of phone for the price that you are paying.
- Battery is medicore, partially due to bugs of 4.2 I believe. Dead locks are draining the battery.
- Lack of SD card might be a deal breaker for you. It isn't for me.
- Camera sucks.
Note 2
- Huge display, this is probably the max that you can carry with the borderline portability. The display is beneficial for reading stuff, browsing, sharing contents with friends
- The battery is ridiculous. The size, with the power management of the software makes it unreal. I get average 2 hours of light/moderate usage per 10%, on LTE.
- Touchwiz - To use the full features of the Note2, you probably don't want AOSP. The S-Pen works well with touchwiz, and I find touchwiz works well with large displays due to the oversized UI elements
- Size - It's pocketable, but it's not extremely comfortable. Taking in and out, using it in public, talking on it looks very awkward. No matter how big your hands are, how big of a person you are, this IS larger than your average phone by a lot
- One hand usability - Samsung does have some one hand accessibility but in general, reaching for places around the screen is a struggle with one hand
- Great sound - Speaker, and headphone jack.
- Strong vibrator
- S Pen - Unless you have a use for it, it's a gimmick. It's fun to fool around with it, but the hype tends to die off quickly
- FAST charging. Nexus 4 is fast, but Note 2 is even faster consider it's massive battery. This is a very important feature to me.
- Impressive camera, but not that it's any/much better than that of SGS3
- Oh, if you don't have a 7" tablet yet, this should fill that gap a bit.
As it stands, Note 2 has some very attractive points to me, such as the large display for reading and the insane battery life that makes me not to worry about being close to a charger. However, I don't feel comfortable using it on a daily basis due to the size. WIth that said, I am using a Note 2 now as I gave my Nexus 4 (8GB) to my other half. I have a 16GB coming in a month, and I will re-evaluate it again by then.
These two phones are pretty much Android in it's best form in today's market, and they are not substitutable for each other due to the different nature of them. The phone war has evolved to beyond to the specs-war just like computing world. The "better specs" of Note 2 doesn't necessary determine whether the phone is better or not, and with that said, Nexus 4 specs is pretty impressive too. You need to pick your own base on your need

The Nexus 4 ultimately had too many drawbacks for me to consider it. The thermal throttling issues with the S4Pro processor, the non-swapable battery with less than stellar battery life, the limited storage without microSD expansion, the glass back prone to cracking, and no LTE. And now we find out that the Nexus 4 cannot support USB-OTG, so all those who bought one thinking they could move files over to an external drive are SOL. No USB keyboards/mice/Dualshock etc. Not a big deal if you have bluetooth peripherals, but I want to have as many options as possible. The Note II is a superhero in that regard...
I have the Note 2 and personally love it, but if you don't need the size, then nexus 4 is a much better option. I love the vanilla 4.2 JB and the screen is much crispier, any build quality is top notch [I have both phones]
If note 2 had a 1080 display then, I would so Note 2 hands down.
Get a quality BT headphone and you won't have to worry about how you look to other people...personally I really could give a rats behind how others think...but hey that's just me...
Nexus vs Note II...to me it all comes down to do you want the biggest best phone or a smaller phone that doesn't offer as much.
S-pen is there if you need it...and it's always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

- Yes, you can always bring a BT headset, but shouldn't you be able to hold a phone comfortably on your face instead of having to depend on a BT headset in order to not look silly? Also, how about the people that don't like bluetooth headset in general?

Caring about what other people think of you holding a phone to your face reeks of insecurity to me. "Looking Silly" is the last thing that would sway me from buying an excellent device.
Remember how small phones used to be ten years ago? It wasn't that long ago when people also thought 3.5" smartphones were huge.

What I said: "S Pen -Unless you have a use for it, it's a gimmick." - You do, so it's not a gimmick for you for sure. I know a few people that do have a use for it and I am impressed with how they make use of it for work purposes.
Which other point of my post is pure bias? I simply listed out the things I from with using both devices, I never said one is better for another for everyone. However Mac did say that "you are GOING to want one", "BUGS with 4.2", etc etc to just praise the Note 2. OP is trying to make a decision, and words like that aren't going to make his choice easier is it?

I might have worded it wrong, but the fact that it's bigger than normal does draw attention. Yes, you can choose not to care about anyone thinks at all, but there are some actually "dont" want to draw that type of attention with a device. It is a fact that Note 2 is humongous, and that's ALSO it's selling point. Unless you have a need and can live with the size, otherwise you might want to look at other alternatives like SGS3 (which i have one sitting here also if you want comparison) that offers something in the middle.

I feel like my Note 1 was an experiment and they got the kinks worked out on the Note 2. I've played with the Note 2 at the store and liked it *most* of the time. Actually, Tmobile's demo seemed in better shape than AT&T's demo, but I have to stick to AT&T. I'm running Cm10 so I can have Android 4.1 and then load the 4.2 camera, clock, and keyboard.
If you're *lots* happier with your Note 2, I'd like to know why. Are the Samsung software upgrades (e.g. multiview) really useful or gimicky? I don't miss Samsung's snote now but still use a writing app (write) on my Note 1.
Also, I'm very weary of not getting those Android OS upgrades timely. Was almost thinking of going to Nexus 4 but would miss the stylus and screen size too much I think.

I would say if you dont use the SPEN like for everything its not worth it. I must say the screen on the NOTE 2 is better than the NOTE 1. But I am pretty anal about my screens. Speed wise Ive used my friends NOTE 1 thats MODDED also with custom roms. Not sure which one he is using but it was pretty fluid.
But this phone is one of the best phones Ive ever used. I get about a 22-24 hours without charging. I am a heavy user. Games, text, a sh**ton of emailing.
Dthere are many advantages over the note 1 Firstly being battery life. This monster has a real battery for the device size and use. Also the spen is so much more refined that you'll actually use it. The processor removes the need to mod and oc. All in all the note 2 is a far superior device.

Battery life isn't a big issue because I have two spare batteries for my Note 1, although it would be nice NOT to have to change batteries in a single day. My Note 1's back cover hardly stays on anymore because of taking it off to change batteries so often.
I like the form factor better on the Note 2. Seems like Samsung figured out that they could still have a large screen but make it narrower and taller than the Note 1.
I started playing with some floating apps on my Note 1. Makes me think multi-view would be useful on the Note 2. But multi-view only works with certain apps, right? Kind of limits its usefulness for sure. (And, yes, I know the Note 1 *might* get multi-view in an update, but I simply can't imagine it working anywhere near as well as it does on the better HW equipped Note 2).
What apps does multiview not work in? Thus far I've added every app that I've wanted on there.

Well those note 1 batteries won't fit the note 2 so you'd have to buy 2 more for the note 2,which you won't need.

I also came from the N1 and you are correct, the form factor of the N2 is nicer.
However, if you are a fan of Cm10 then that makes a switch questionable imho. Why? I happen to enjoy the s-pen apps, floating pop-up windows, and multi-windows etc that you loose using CM10
I rooted and am using one of the de-bloated stock based roms which allow me to add some other apps to multi-windows and tethering.
BUT, the nice thing about the N2 is you really don't need to root if you don't want to mess with it. The N2 runs solid and many preinstalled apps can be deactivated in the app manager.

Thanks. You hit on my very next questions about rooting/custom roms. I'd usually prefer not to root at all, but there are a couple of apps that I am a fan of that require root (like tasker and GMD gestures). And I'd definitely like tethering ability. Sounds like you have a setup that's exactly like I prefer. I've used custom ROMs but never used de-bloated stock based roms. Sounds exactly like what I would want on the N2 if I got it.
So are there stock based ROMs that include all the Samsung apps and spen features, e.g. snote, etc?

I currently have a GN2. S4 worth switching to? (Who has...pros/cons?) I have 20 days from TMO to make the choice, but input from experience would be quite helpful.
Reasons for possibly changing:

My only concern is the screen may feel too small, I know my TB, and iphone felt stupidly small after N2, But 5 Inches may not feel as lethargic as 4.3/4.

Ah cant be that good. I know the s4 launcher sucks im using it now. I hate it. But the phone is definetly not bad. Its good as thw note. But I use the note for so much more than just a phone. Its actually more important to me than my laptop.

I've had both (T-889, I9500 & M19) and kinda miss my note to be honest. If you find the real estate the most attractive on the Note 2, you will miss it on the GS4. Another thing I miss is the battery life on the Note 2, that thing could last me 2 days without a charge. Overall the the GS4 is a nice device (my personal unit is the i9500) and definitely has some advantages over the Note 2 (full hd, 13mp, newer gpu/cpu) but over all the Note 2 feels much more polished. The screen is more responsive, the UI has had the kinks of the CPU/GPU ironed out from the S3, and the S-Pen makes drawing super easy and fun. I'm sure the development will only help the pros of the GS4, but out of box experience was much better on the Note 2, it even had a more "premium feel". I'm gonna stick it out for a bit with the GS4, but may end up going back to my Note.

The phone actually slid out of my hand once because it got so slippery.... like 4x actually. that glossy back body is a nightmare (I got a custom backing tho now)
Yeah, all the kinks should be ironed out with roms and OTAs over the coming months though. Battery life wise...Ive seen so many differences in screen on-time its insane in the thread in general. For example, I was going to go with the htc one...until I learned of its battery life (I stole a co-workers one and 1 hr 34min of screen ontime put phone at 65% battery - Thunderbolt moment, anyone?) I get 6HR or so of ontime with the N2 on Verizons LTE and since LTE drains faster...Im guessing I would get more out of the tmo n2? (Wild guess) - Sadly even though Florida is one of TMOs most covered states...I don't think my city got lte yet.

The S4 is like a baker walking by with a more delicious looking tiny cupcake when you just got a huge piece of cake. not only that but... I work at a themepark, and 3/5 people have white GS3 or N2.... It was insanity (Mostly GS3 Dominant, but I could tell there were plenty of N2 Tucked behind otterboxes due to the SPen slot cutout) the S4 At least would be a slight step away from that...
If you are used to the size of the Note 2, the only logical upgrades in the future would be to another Note (Note 3, Note 4, ...). Note 2 is still probably more productive for multitasking than the S4. You won't need features like Air Gestures or Smart Scroll (which probably can be added to N2 in the future). IR blaster is fun to use, but probably not a necessity. If you carry a tablet and a phone, the Note is probably more suited for you. If you just talk on your phone and like to browse a lot, not do any real work, the S4 is the perfect size phone. I've had both so I know. I like the feel of the S4, and the 5" screen doesn't make it tiny at all compared to the 5.5" N2.

I mostly use it for just texting, and IM+ Is -constantly- being used. The only issues with the N2 i had was use in daylight screen was impossible to see for me, and it got slightly awkward handling it with one hand. I also use the camera a LOT for taking product photos for etsy. I only used SPen to doodle random things and send it to whoever i was talking to when I felt it was suddenly more convenient then typing.
...I will also state, speaker mode in calls sucked really bad. I never liked calling on N2 much.

I can tell you right now the S4 is not that much better in daylight, compared to the HTC One which is brighter. It's almost impossible for me to see as well with full brightness. While I could handle the N2 size in one hand, I find the smaller form factor of the S4 to be much more comfortable, hence why I decided to get the S4. Plus, I find myself using the SPen less and less with the N2, so I was willing to let that go. If they made the S4 screen work with an SPen, that would have been great (I don't mind not having a holder).

I wish I could one-hand it...but I basically have teen sized hands (short) I never minded the size because of purse. In your opinion, is the S4 Worth the switch from a new-phone standpoint (not upgrade) I would never go HTC after thunderbolt...esp since S4 has a better headphone dac.

At this moment, probably not. I would at least wait and see what Google has in store software/hardware wise for Android, as Google I/O is next week.

The Note 2 is better at everything, screen, battery, and if you like aosp, there are a lot of those roms for you. The only thing we are missing from a nexus, as far as I can tell, is photoshpere. The devs for this phone are fantastic, so many roms to choose from. The size of the phone should not bother you. Oh yeah, the camera on the Note 2 blows away the Galaxy Nexus. I've had the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4, and the Note 2 when running an aosp rom is just as smooth as the Nexus 4, IMO.

Touchwiz is bearable on the gnote2 because most of the features are actually useful AND work. Great all around phone. Reception, form factor is great for its size, put your own launcher like nova to get the aosp launcher feel, volume is great on ear speaker and loudspeaker and the 720p screen is beautiful even when compared to 1080p. And the SD card slot and removable battery are bonus. Oh yeah, can't forget battery life. Battery just doesn't stop. Expect 6+ hours of screen time easily. Only the most demanding of games will put a hurt on it and even then it still does great. All that and you can get this phone for less than $550 currently and it should still hold nicely for at least another year and I wouldn't be surprised if it holds it down another 2. Don't forget to get a wireless receiver to put inside the battery compartment and a compatible wireless charger.

It's definitely worth upgrading. This phone is better in every respect - sure we only have Android 4.1 officially but unless you really need the multi user feature then you actually gain quite a bit from TouchWiz. The launcher itself blows but the rest is great - things like multi window and driving mode. I don't even run custom roms anymore it's that good - rooted stock is all you need on this bad boy.

I am what you would call a flashaholic. At the moment I'm running Hawkish rom with Perseus kernel. On the days I want aosp I either use Sentinel rom or ParanoidAndroid.

My friend has a Gnex, He definitely likes the ability to change screentone but didn't feel huge difference between the two screens, He is quite happy with the gaming performance where he said even games like vector would sometimes have framedrop on the gnex, But he is soooo annoyed that we don't have 4.2 yet, he knows it's not an important update but the feeling that he actually needs to "wait" for the update is really annoying him, that alone is making him consider the Nexus 4

Touchwiz hurts my eyes but at least you have the "choice", my advice to you is to go for it at least you can install CM and switch back to TW,Just don't get it new, the Note 3 is on the horizon get a cheap note 2 for now, good luck buddy

Touchwiz isn't so bad on gnote2. Put nova launcher to get rid of the eyesore on the home screens and the rest is OK.

Coming from a Galaxy Nexus I personally couldn't stand Touchwiz for long. However AOSP roms are pretty much stable by now and almost everything is working correctly. That said the Note 2 is one of the best phones I've ever owned so I highly suggest it or waiting for the Note 3

Have no fear my friend. Like I said, I came from a nexus 4 running Paranoid Android. My note 2 running PA ROM is just as smooth and has every feature that the nexus 4 has minus photosphere. The devs that are working with the note 2 will most likely keep working on new ROMs for at least another year or 2, probably longer. You will not be dissatisfied with either the Nexus 4 or a Note 2. My personal opinion would be get the Note 2.

Have come over to Note 2 from galaxy nexus..I really liked the gnex but couldn't stand the horrible camera and battery life.
I would say the better camera and brilliant battery life on the Note2 should be reason enough. Plus there is some great development work for Note 2 . So no fears. Using the Project AOSP v1.4 ROM by modstorm .. And this makes the Note2 almost perfect.:laugh:
i came over from the gnex too and the battery was terrible. The note 2 is pretty much better in everything. Only thing i preferred on the gnex was the position of the led notification
We may not be on the cutting edge when it comes to Android versions but we do gain several enhancements over stock. Better camera software, driving mode, voice control of apps, and multi window are my favourites. Smart stay and motion gestures seem more gimmicky to me although others my get value from them. Also I prefer having my toggles at the top of the notification window rather than in a separate box.
Oh then there is the micro sd slot, battery life, removable battery, and s-pen.
I don't miss my Nexus 4 one bit.

my impressions after 1-2 weeks with note2 (vs gnex):
better:
- samsung-only (proprietary) features
- battery life
- reading PDFs in landscape possible at last (fonts at least for me in gnex were too small)
- FM radio!!! (last phone from sammy that supports this? such moron assumption that everybody now has/will have limitless data plans)
- much nicer for watching videos
- supernice camera, actually anything better than camera in gnex is supernice
- micro sd
- spen (sam ROM only, yeah i know about apps for aosp...still)
- removable battery (the same actually, just want to stress the fact it is there)
worse:
- samsung-only (proprietary) features, i.e they will never-ever be available for AOSP ROM (BIG ONE for me, means I have to stay on samsung ROM) or suffer tons of features in AOSP simply not there
- btw. camera because of this somehow reported to work a lot better in samsung ROM than AOSP
- touchwiz is a bit painful to use after AOSP, miss the flexibility/configurability of cyanogen...
- shape/size of gnex is ideal for my hand, this one is a bit too much, not a big deal though and apparently getting used to (BUT i will never use armor case, makes it simply far too big)
- unstable WIFI (lots of disconnects) in 4.1.2 by samsung, some fixes available currently testing one to revert 4.1.1 wifi stack (rooted phone needed)
- a bit more gimmicky rooting/custom recovery - not a big deal
- not worse but dont like: handwriting seems to work only with samsung keyboard app? sort of eliminates slide-it,swype etc... need to find some workaround...
- pockets: yeah defo a challenge to fit in shirt's pocket, barely fits in trousers' pockets

thanks, happy to hear...actually I just noticed note2 has also non-AOSP custom ROMs, which after gnex is kind of new category for me. What this seems to mean I will have the chance to get the combined samsung ROM + AOSP-type extra customization, one example seems Hawkish mentioned earlier on this thread -> sounds interesting, I will give it a try in next 1-2 weeks and can report here if you are interested?
Honestly not sure if anyone else feels this way so I'm curious what the rest of the At&t Note 4 community has to say...specifically on this...I mean two very important sensors got replaced for a fingerprint sensor and a heartbeat monitor that when you have a case on both are hard to use like it becomes pointless...which I think they are both too early in development to actually lose a humidity and temp sensor which alot of apps like to grab ahold of and becomes kind of important...the restriction is killer almost like I don't want it anymore honestly no root locked bootloader...can't do that for as long as I have been let alone alot longer...the camera has alot of gimmicks in it but does have a little better camera itself just think the software is horrible...I will say the pixel difference is there though and the screen is wonderful...it does have the lastest snapdragon which i like its the only reason why I still wanna hold it honestly...the battery is like a huge noticeable difference it decays alot faster then the three did and the phone does warm up alot more I think it has alot to do with the snapdragon the screen and the software layout like there is a lot of white when there doesn't need to be and the teal menu &!*# kills me I can't stand it there are alot of s5 layouts and even apps on here that they tried to hide but don't even work almost like they ported the s5 to the note 4 with minor changes it sucks ...but is that worth it over the note 3 I replaced it with I don't think it is....it think maybe a tmobile version of this phone would be worth replacing my at&t note 3 maybe thats a maybe its like they just through something together and sent it out because apple has a new i phone they need to compete with but it needs work i think it got put out to early...but this is definitely not worth it...just my opinion I'm curious what others feel...if it was a loss or a gain...

I am coming from the Note 3 and I am loving the 4. The screen is amazing, I find battery life even better that the 3. Definitely more responsive with the 805 Snapdragon. I have the Ringke Slim case which allows me to still use the heart monitor with no issues. I find the fingerprint sensor to be a nice option. I personally don't mind the teal settings menu since I just don't interact that much with the menu. I also really liked the Note 3
I always believed that somebody who own a Galaxy Note should wait at least two year period for upgraded.
Hardware jump is not as impressive as the Note 3 and quite frankly, Samsung is really becoming insistent that the better value of the device is it ecosystem and built-in app.
So any one who are still owning a Note 3, don't feel the rush to upgrading, you are fin at least until Note 5 has something better to offer.
2.5D glass makes the device a dream to use when swiping from the edges of the display.I went from the note 2 to the M7 to the Note 3 to the M8 to the Note 4 and I think it's worth it but I'm a early adopter/ enthusiast type of guy
Both phones are great and indeed very similar, but the Note 4 just kills it on camera which blows it out of the park.
Battery life for me has been better with Note 4 ever since I killed the bloatware (compared to N3).
Seriously though, the camera... It's not even about pixel count at all, it's the optical image stabilization and wider field of view... Incredibly more capable as a walk-around point 'n shoot. The glass seems to capture a sharper and wider image. This has nothing to do with pixel count. Numbers only tell you so much... Image quality tells you everything
IMO, it depends. My Note 3 running DynamicKat was pretty much just as fast as the Note 4, plus I had all the other benefits of being rooted. Honestly, I've been using the Note 4 since it came out but I find a reason I missed my Note 3 everyday......
EXCEPT! IMO, the "Quick Charge" is the biggest reason to get the Note 4. I'm no longer caring about my battery life. Seriously, I LOVE that feature.
I came from the note 3, and love the note 4. I will, however, return this one, and buy the t-mobile one. That way I can root.

Here's the Note 3 sensors...
Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, gesture, temperature, humidity
And the Note 4's...
Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, gesture, UV, heart rate, SpO2 (blood oxygen)
So UV, heart rate, and blood oxygen replaced temperature and humidity. I'd guess how "very important" the swap is depends on individual use cases. Out of curiosity, how did the loss of temperature and humidity sensors impact what you do with your phone?

It's the new "normal." Look what Google themselves is doing with 5.0. Two years ago I'd say about 75% of my circle of friends and associates rooted their phones. Today it's about 25%. Anyone connecting to a company network can't use a "tampered" phone. And it's not a physical restriction, it's the security document you sign that says using a tampered device to connect to the company network is an instant terminable offense. So T-Mobile doesn't lock their bootloaders (they don't do a lot of national account business either) but that's going to become the exception not the rule. I haven't been able to use a rooted device in over a year based on the networks I need to connect to.
The camera has alot of gimmicks in it but does have a little better camera itself just think the software is horrible...

You're pretty much alone in your opinion. You give up nothing from the Note 3 and gain a lot. And that's according to people on the forum and reviewers.

Set up exactly like my Note 3, I'm getting 25-35% better battery life on my Note 4. So are a lot of other people here.
The phone does warm up alot more I think it has alot to do with the snapdragon

When doing what? I haven't noticed any difference in heat output; at least the way I use my phone.
The screen and the software layout like there is a lot of white when there doesn't need to be and the teal menu &!*# kills me

I can't stand it there are alot of s5 layouts and even apps on here that they tried to hide but don't even work almost like they ported the s5 to the note 4 with minor changes it sucks

The Note 3's over a year old and so is its interface. The SGS5 is six months old and was Samsung's first effort to streamline and flatten TW and move to a more contemporary UX design and colors. The Note 4's s/w looks far more modern and has much better stock app integration than the Note 3's. I think you'll find it hard to find people that want to go back to a UX design that was already dated when the N3 launched. UI and UX design is also subjective.
Battery is better than GN3. It has to be some bloat were, if you have a poor battery life, an Index Service bug, for example. GN4 is substantially faster not only based on the CPU speed, but also on a faster memory controller. Definitely better and faster camera, brighter screen for outdoor use.
I got the Note 4, for me the upgrade was worth it including the other sensors. I would defiantly upgrade if you have the option through the Next program, if you're going to have to pay retail, not worth it.
I was rooted on my Note 3, but I have disabled all AT&T apps and have the exact same setup with Nova Prime on my Note 4. Hands down, this is a better device in terms of screen, camera, and for me most importantly BATTERY LIFE! My Note 3 was running stock rom with root because I have AT&T versions. The biggest eater of my battery life was Android Wear with my Moto 360. It literally sucked the life out of my Note 3 where it would only last barely a day - it was pretty bad. Also, I've owned every Note since the first one came out. I had a black Note 1 and people were shocked by how big it was when it first came out. I then got a white Note 2 (I truly loved this phone - it was rooted with the best rom = CLEANROM). The white Note 3 that replaced it was decent. Now, I'm back to all black with a Ringke Slim Black Soft Feel case. The battery life just doesn't seem to want to drop at all, lol. Even the stock pull down doesn't bother me as others have said. I still have it pretty customized using light manager and Textra, etc. I used Helium to restore all my app data perfectly. I highly recommend the Note 4. However, like others have noted, it's probably best to get the Tmobile version if you have the money and root it and use it on AT&T. The only reason I stuck with AT&T is because my friend has a hook up (I got my phone really early) and the amount just factors into my bill through the Next program so it's cheaper overall.
I was heading towards the Nexus 6 but with the debacle today I think I will go for the note 4. Your comments were very helpful.

I went from the Note 2 to the Note 4, and honestly, I would still call this an incremental upgrade. That's not a knock on the phone, merely an observation on the state of the technology in this category.
The screen is much better, but the speed increases are negligible, the software is not significantly improved, the stylus actually feels cheaper and a step back though I have not used it enough to make a call on functionality. I did not spend any time with the Note 3, but this is actually (IMO) less comfortable to hold vs the Note 2 due to the "squared" design.
I was skeptical of upgrading, but I had numerous hardware issues after two years with the Note 2 that really forced my hand into upgrading now. If you're OK with your Note 2 or 3, then pocket the cash or donate a portion to me and wait for the next big thing. Wow. That was not intentional.
I was thinking about passing note 4 cuz I had a Note 3 (rooted) . The screen is amazing and my battery is absurdly insane awesome on the note 4 . I'm a moderate user to heavy use and haven't got battery below 75 % . I'm impressed !

These are all things that I consider more than just marginal improvements over my Note 3. I honestly never thought I would be using touchwiz. I'm the guy that automatically goes and installs nova prime without batting an eye. I'm going two week strong on touchwiz and loving it. The spen integration is improved. I like the new wrinkles around being able to manipulate windows and apps in bubbles and such. I pledged for root because the one thing that I don't like on stock is the fact that I have no real control over how cluttered my notification area gets up top. Give me root with wanam exposed and I am one happy camper.
It may be gimmicky bit I like being able to gauge my stress level. I measured my stress level and my wife's at the same time one evening. We had both just gotten home from work. She was clearly stressed while I had what I thought was a low stress day. The measurement was on point. This phone is making me utilize s-health more than ever before and I like that. I run a lot and count calories so it comes in handy.
All things considered, rooted or not, this is one helluva piece of technology.

it's the rounded edges of the glass,yes
It is probably worth the upgrade but not until Note 4 has root. I couldn't give up my custom roms

Also coming from the Note 3... And I'm still on it.
Note 4 is in its box until the wifi issue is fixed. Any B, G, N network speed is horrible. AC Seems fine though but I travel a lot and AC is new and expensive, no where is going to have it so its unacceptable for me.
Its really not an upgrade, its like getting an iPhone 4 S from a 4 or a 5 S from a 5. Yeah the cameras are a bit better, but that's about it in all honesty. Hating Kit Kat.

Battery life for me has been better with Note 4 ever since I killed the bloatware (compared to N3).
Seriously though, the camera... It's not even about pixel count at all, it's the optical image stabilization and wider field of view... Incredibly more capable as a walk-around point 'n shoot. The glass seems to capture a sharper and wider image. This has nothing to do with pixel count. Numbers only tell you so much... Image quality tells you everything
