Im looking at going from an alltel htc touch pro to a Droid Incredible.
It's my understanding, from the sales person, that
#1 I can't keep my old school alltel phone plan that was grandfathered in with the merger
#2 Id have to get a few things differently with my Verizon plan.
Here's a couple things that came up.... Under my alltel plan I was paying $30 for unlimited data, whether straight through the phone or tethered, or broadcasting wifi through an installed cab.
But now im going to have to pay at least one or maybe 2 monthly charges to tether, and my usage is metered and limited to a certian amount of transfer?
Here's the nuts and bolts of the old alltel plan on the touch pro. About 100/mo with 30 of that being the data plan with no limit on useage. Mycircle.. unlimited text, 500 anytime, free mobile to mobile
So what should I expect from "Verizon" if I try to buy a Droid Inc..?
Simple way to avoid tethering fees. Root your incredible, and install wireless tether. Verizon can't detect you're tethering or if they can, they don't whine about it.
Thanks!
I always wanted to try that before but instead paid the 30/mo instead. Fear I guess.
I pay $103 a month, 450 minutes and unlimited everything else, so your cost will be about the same.
When you get the incredible, root it, and install the application wireless tether as said. It is the same thing as the mobile hotspot, you just won't get charged by Verizon for using it to tether.

you can also use PdaNet or EasyTether is you want to to tether via USB..
I just hack my normal 3g tether...
Or you can go into epst and change the thingy from dun.VZW ect to vzw.
Look for the tut on here somewhere its what I do
Sent from my HTC Incredible
I pay $86 a month, 450 minutes and unlimited everything else thatis with a 20 dollar discount
I pay $45 a month for unlimited EVERYTHING at Cricket. Just buy a Dinc somewhere, and use the ROM here at XDA.
Well I pulled the trigger this afternoon and got the Inc.
I kept my old plan.
As she was ringing it up she said a notification popped up that said I would lose my 7pm-7am free calling. Shortly after she was able to add it back on the plan like it always was.
I was surprised with a $50-off during the check-out too! .. and without warning.
It was going to be 249.99+ 100 mail-in rebate+ tax. Ended up being 213 out the door, so I will only end up with 113 in the phone.
It keeps asking to install a system update. Do I keep selecting no and go ahead and root?
Now I just have to get these touch pro contacts into the inc??

You have to upgrade. Generally speaking, TMobile gives the first 12 hours of Android usage for free to "new" Android users to suck them in.
They do IMEI validation on their end periodically to make sure the phone you are using lines up with the plan you are on. Sucks, I know.
that's kinda weird. Before I bought the phone I talked with a Tmo rep and he said that if you already have a 3g plan but your device is 4g capable then it will just use 4g. I asked if it required a new sim though. He said no but gave me a new one because mine was a little beaten in from wear and tear. I suggest going in to a tmo store and asking if they can trouble shoot you if you're already paying for the standard "unlimited" data.
Ya already unlimited data and its cheaper then the 4g unlimited data so I don't want switch. I can't even 2g which sucks. Ill go talk to tmobile I hope I don't have to switch
I guess it really depends on which data plan you were on. I was "assuming" you were on something like the $10 Web2Go or another cheaper smartphone data plan - which are both technically "3G".
If you were already on an Android plan and then you shouldn't have to switch.
i talk to the rep i got him to keep my data plan the same price and switched over to android data plan i had an hd2 running android so i had to switch it. He said it takes 2 hours to kick in so im still waiting
well its been about five hours and all does is go to web2go and tell me i need to upgrade so im guessing im screwed and now its time fork up more money for 4g

It depends on which data plan you were on with the HD2.
I was on the HD2 with $10 Web2Go (which worked) and had to switch.
You can do what I did and buy a AT&T android phone and unlock it and use your T-mobile Sim and still get data but you might not get their full 3G (something about being on different frequencies) but you will still get there data.
I did that but umm vice versa lol.
Since T-Mobile does not keep track of AT&T's IMEI's they can't charge you for having a droid because they don't know. At least that's what i did with AT&T
So my T-Mobile account uses T-Zones for data, and it's only $5.99 a month unlimited on the grandfathered plan. I had an iPhone 4 unlocked to Tmo, and it worked great. I just bought a T-Mo Galaxy SII, and using the SIM in that phone gets me no data. Voice works great, but no data at all. When putting a different active SIM in the SII it gets data fine. And I'm using a brand new 4G SIM so I know that's not the issue.
The question is - how can I continue on my current plan and use the SII with T-zones for my data? Will a custom ROM work? Do they use EIN to determine if you need the Android data plan? I'm rooted but on stock right now. I really really want to keep my current data plan because it's unlimited and cheapo.
Anyone know the answer to this one? Thanks so much for any help you can provide.
They told me I had to upgrade from my 19.99 unlimted Internet plan to use 4G on my old HTC Sensation. I can only imagine what they woudl say if you inquired about the 5.99 plan on your SG2.
Contact 611 & please keep us posted on the outcome
It looks like you need to manually enter the APNs.

I've tried all the APNs out there for Tmo and none work. I'll call retentions tomorrow (I'm out of contract so they should take good care of me) and let you know what happens.
T-Zones is a grandfathered plan and it only works with phones that uses 2G, which are only the basic phones. The SGS2 requires the Android data plan/Smartphone data plan which if you call retention, they should offer you for 20$.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I got. 5GB plan for $20 and $10 off each month for two years. It's basically $2 more a month than I was paying before, I can live with that. 2 year contract required.
Thanks for all the help!
on a side note, tzone won't work with phones that have tmobile logo on them because tmo scan the
imei #, a phone id.
it should work with phones that have international versions..check sensation, o3d ( make sure tmo version because they also have att version with same model p920)
The only Android phone I ever go to work on $5 and $10 unlimited internet was my HD2 which wasn't technically an Android phone . Was pretty pissed when I had to switch to the EM+ $20 5GB plan.
Any phone thats not branded tmobile will work. I would never get rid of that plan. If you get the galaxy s2 from telus it will work fine. For some reason the htc tmobile mytouch slide will work also just popped my sim in one and it's been working for over a month and other android phones on tmobile stop working right away. Data is data that android plan stuff from tmobile is a scam if they dont have your imei listed in there logs the phone will work.
Yep.... It's IMEI locked and not according to some fallacies that some people threw out there (only works with 2g/3g, older phones). It WILL work with new smartphones just not ones purchased from T-mobile. The European Sensation works with T-zones. The Telus SGS2 will work with T-Zones. The upcoming Galaxy Nexus will work with T-zones (if bought elsewhere BUT t-mobile) Do your own research before listening to other people's advice.
Never get rid of that plan. It's truly 100% unlimited and unthrottled. If you got rid of it because of people here, i feel sorry for you man. If I were you, I would return the phone, get the T-zone option back and purchase the Telus SGS2. It's more expensive but worth it in the long run ($15 savings every month). Alternatively, just wait for the penta-band GSM HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus from ATT, Sprint and directly from google.

The only set back with keeping the tzone plan and with the phones that would work on the plan are the download speed. With this phone, I can get 10mb easy, but with my N1, using tzone, the max I ever got was 3mb (average of around 1.6-2.0). If you get a unsubsidized phone for say $500, you'll need 2 years or so just to break even (assuming you get the tmobile version for $200. you can get it for way less now).
The only good thing about tzones are the real unlimited usuage, but not many ppl uses 5gb every month. I know cause I was using the N1.

Not sure about the speeds.. but i don't know enough/read enough to see if they put you on a different speed profile. They talked a lot of T-zones on Howardforums and that's where i picked up the IMEI restriction. Probably a lot more info there if people want to check it out.
But the N1 vs. the GSG2 radios are way different. Perhaps it's just the phone. A fair comparison would be the telus vs. t-mo version. But i doubt anyone has both to compare.
Up to the OP, depends on his/her usage and what they're willing to pay.
from my understanding as far as speeds are concern, sg2 and htc amaze are the only fist ones that have 42mb data chipset build in. most other ones are either 14.4 or 21mb chip.

Yep. I got the telus sgs2x.... amazing. The highest I ever got was only 10mbps though. But that might change with tmobile getting free crap from AT&T .
The T-Mobile SGS2 is definitely IMEI locked on the APNs, as i've learned the hard way. There is also a number of other limitations being imposed that i've only come across on this handset:
Tethering - Instead of stock Android tethering, there is a tethering manager app that checks for tethering subscriptions and prevents data on the phone from working while tethering. Easily frozen or removed with titanium backup to work.
Wifi Calling - claims to need a new sim card, but according to rep requires a newer data plan (currently on one of the legacy plans). my plan seems to work with the g2 and it's wifi calling app, however i haven't looked for a work around yet
There were some other things i noticed that were software enforced on the handset, but didn't make notes as I went along
@fg I was told by customer service that I don't need to change my data plan. I was told I can keep my 200mb data plan but I would need to go to tmobile store to pick up a new sim card for free to enable wifi calling.
I currently use simple mobile $40 plan but I just saw this guy on walmart.com tmobile prepay plus you get tmobiles 4g up to 5 gb unthrottled for 30 bucks that totally beats paying 40 to get 3g and be cut off after 2-3 gb of data usage. Dont know if anyone has posted this before just figured I would put it out there for people because its a pretty damn good deal if you don't use many minutes

I'd seriously thought about moving to that... but ended up doing something different.
what did u end up going with?
I use net10 with there tmobile sim... 4g is fast and unlimited calling and text... First month i used close to 5gb and my data was never throttled... I used the tmobile $30 plan but when i got throttled i could not deal with the slow speeds so i switched to net10
Only 100 minutes of talk for a whole month? Can't do. I use around 450. Not including nights and weekends

I have this plan on S3 After 5Gigs boom ''Up to 2G Speeds'' You won't be able to load a website, seriously, but when on HSPA+ I got as high as 18Mbit near tower
I switched to this from Sprint. You can also get it on T-Mobile's website - but not in stores.
Very happy. I looked at my average minutes per month and it was about 100 each month when including ones that didn't "count" toward my stated pool. Now I can pay a lower monthly fee and be able to not only do the calling I did before, but have a phone that does so much more than just make calls and text.
I get 4G in the city, only GPRS at work - although it's sometimes more reliable than our WIFI - so I'm not complaining (need to speed test it, it's slow but not unbearable).
When I was looking into it, one thing people mentioned was that you can use calls over data/wifi (VOIP etc) to make up for the 100 minute limit.
i've been using this plan($30 5gb unl txt 100 minutes) for over a year and i use skype for the voice calling(IIRC is a little under $3) for a total of about $33 and change a month. absolutely loving it. you can also just use just about any kind of voip but skype seems to be the most maintstream.
I actually used GooveIP on a loaner phone from a friend while I had no actual cell service - and on the SG3 before activating it.
Free and easy - you use Google Voice along with it as well, essentially making it a fully-featured phone just only able to function with a wifi connection. I know people that have gone "all the way" and dropped cell service for a wifi-only device, but I'm a bit too paranoid for that.

How would I change to this plan from the T-Mobile website?
I was entertaining this $30/mo 100/5GB plan, but have decided to go nearly all wifi. I only use the phone for checking voicemails, very rarely for calls, as I've tended towards Skype and GrooveIP for calls, but honestly I have nearly all my contacts using Heytell (voice 'walkie-talkie' uses data only) and they LOVE it...it's practically the only way we talk to one another anymore. I'll use my pay-as-you-go SIM with cheap minutes(Gold Membership already, my 1000+minutes are good for a year), for the rare cellphone call, and buy the Hotspot from Wallyworld, giving me 60 day data access (3.5GB) for $35...making my monthy cost around $20 month (approx. 17 data, 3 on SIM). Obviously, I'll use my wifi at home for music/Netflix, pretty much as I always have.

For the $30/mo plan, it's for new activations only - so you'd need to get a new SIM card and new account.

I don't think this is an an issue with Verizon. I believe this is the FoxFi VPN servers are down. This happened a few months ago, and the next day it started working again.
Hope you are right. Time will tell.
It's 8:36PM Pacific Time - 11/20/2015 - Foxfi not working on Verizon Galaxy s5. Did yours start working again?
Booo. I'd rather get beat in the face with a sack full of pissed off kittens than go without my foxfi....I was one of the retards that got a note 4...and bog5 is not my friend.
Do any of you know how to use FoxFi via USB mode or Bluetooth mode to connect PS3, granted that'll be a fix till we all figure out what the deal is.
Note 4, Verizon with Unlimited Data Fox Fi not working for me as of I think today (last time I ran it was a week ago). Bummed, bout to take a road trip with the kids for Thanksgiving and no wifi. What's going on?
I just tried to fire up FoxFi for the first time in a few days and I can't get it to work, either. Also on Verizon with an Unlimited Data Plan. Am I screwed?
Looking around the XDA community, it looks like Foxfi is no longer an option. Without root we are done with free wifi tethering for now. I hope Foxfi can come up with a work around. I am using usb tethering and Pdanet until someone beats this block.
Why is it just to much to pay the $30 for the hot spot? Thats a total of $79 a month for unlimited high speed data, check the cable and phone companies prices they are moving away from unlimited to tiered packages, comcast wants the same amount of money for 150 gigs a month, last month eac of my 5 lines used that apiece.
Foxfi just started working! Hope it continues.
Foxfi has been killed by our carrier Verizon. I believe I have found a work around and need testers. Currently I'm running foxfi on my Verizon OG5, none rooted with unlimited data Plan.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/foxfi-fixed-og5-rooted-verizon-note4-t3256610
Edit: I heard that foxfi is working again? please confirm!
FoxFi also started working for me, again, around last Wednesday or so. Been working fine ever since. I'm on the road and have been using it as my hotspot for tablet and laptop almost 24/7 since then. No problems.
