Im looking at going from an alltel htc touch pro to a Droid Incredible.
It's my understanding, from the sales person, that
#1 I can't keep my old school alltel phone plan that was grandfathered in with the merger
#2 Id have to get a few things differently with my Verizon plan.
Here's a couple things that came up.... Under my alltel plan I was paying $30 for unlimited data, whether straight through the phone or tethered, or broadcasting wifi through an installed cab.
But now im going to have to pay at least one or maybe 2 monthly charges to tether, and my usage is metered and limited to a certian amount of transfer?
Here's the nuts and bolts of the old alltel plan on the touch pro. About 100/mo with 30 of that being the data plan with no limit on useage. Mycircle.. unlimited text, 500 anytime, free mobile to mobile
So what should I expect from "Verizon" if I try to buy a Droid Inc..?
Simple way to avoid tethering fees. Root your incredible, and install wireless tether. Verizon can't detect you're tethering or if they can, they don't whine about it.
Thanks!
I always wanted to try that before but instead paid the 30/mo instead. Fear I guess.
I pay $103 a month, 450 minutes and unlimited everything else, so your cost will be about the same.
When you get the incredible, root it, and install the application wireless tether as said. It is the same thing as the mobile hotspot, you just won't get charged by Verizon for using it to tether.

you can also use PdaNet or EasyTether is you want to to tether via USB..
I just hack my normal 3g tether...
Or you can go into epst and change the thingy from dun.VZW ect to vzw.

I pay $86 a month, 450 minutes and unlimited everything else thatis with a 20 dollar discount
I pay $45 a month for unlimited EVERYTHING at Cricket. Just buy a Dinc somewhere, and use the ROM here at XDA.
Well I pulled the trigger this afternoon and got the Inc.
I kept my old plan.
As she was ringing it up she said a notification popped up that said I would lose my 7pm-7am free calling. Shortly after she was able to add it back on the plan like it always was.
I was surprised with a $50-off during the check-out too! .. and without warning.
It was going to be 249.99+ 100 mail-in rebate+ tax. Ended up being 213 out the door, so I will only end up with 113 in the phone.
It keeps asking to install a system update. Do I keep selecting no and go ahead and root?
Now I just have to get these touch pro contacts into the inc??

i am thinking about getting the touch pro2 but i am thinking how i could do this without data
so if i sign up for the phone and get the data and then 10 days later say the phone got stolen and put the sim card in a old motorola razr and tell them is this my replacement will that work? or are they going to still make pay for data service
i had att in the past and i was able to do that with them i don't know how understanding or lenient the tm csr's are.
if you tell them that it was stolen then they will block your imei. just call them and say you dont want the data plan. or get it for a short amount of time. then say that you have a different phone
Well you can buy the phone outright without a data plan but that could get expensive. I would just get it and then cancel the data plan later.
I went with Tmobile: 39.99 for 300 min + myfaves, 24.99 unlimited net + 400 msgs = I'm using Google Voice with this thing which brings me to unlimited mins/msgs if I ever go over. The internet plan is totally worth it. And it is the cheapest one out there.

I thought the 24.99 plan no longer included msgs, was that grandfathered?
There is a unlimited msg + data for 34.99 together I know that but I never heard of the 24.99 internet coming with 400 messages. I guess it wouldn't matter for me because I use more then 400 messages a month.
there used to be a plan with messages but it was removed so u only have it if grandfathered in.

correct
they stopped that plan about 3 months ago
and to the OP, in regards of taking off the data plan later on, you cant do it. its a requirement in purchasing the phone and cannot be removed without an early termination fee. T-mobile can see what phone you are using, when was the last day you used it, and your IMEI, so reporting it stolen will not do you much good
??? you are getting an internet phone that costs $350 w/ a 2 year contract and can't afford $25 extra per month??? WHY bother? and please don't say to use the wifi, you can get a netbook for less and no contract. keep your razr.
25 dollars a month totals up to 1100 over the two year contract. MUCH more than the cost of the phone unlocked. And remember, some people DO have wifi most of the places that find themselves throughout their normal days. This means that should they happen to need 3G or EDGE or whatever cell connection is available to them, it behooves them more to pay the small fees for a momentary use than the monthly twenty-five dollars. Other people find themselves using internet wherever and whenever, thereby benefitting more from a data plan. But it's for different users and different routines/lifes. It is idiotic to judge someone just because they don't want to be forced into a data plan. Heck, there was an article in wmpowerusers or wmexperts from a guy who HAD a data plan, but HATED the fact that he was now obligated to get one. One of the points is why can't a user decide what is best for him or her? Why must they pay for things they might rarely or never use based on their personal habits? And if you HAVE to have that kind of plan, then why is the phone going for so much subsidized?
And as has been stated many times, the phone isn't just about internet, it will not magically stop working if you don't have internet access. It has MANY functions and I personally want it for the whole kitten caboodle (with the exception of 3G as it is currently not an option for me), not for just one function.

Ah yes, the voice of reason. Why would anyone not want a netbook that weighs ~2lbs, is approx 3-5x the size of the TP2, does not necessarily come with a touchscreen, for which they don't make a belt clip, but still has a resolution that isn't much better than a TP2, with even lower battery life (unless you separately order a nine cell battery that weighs almost as much as the netbook itself) and only slightly more portability than a regular laptop? I mean that's a perfectly reasonable TP2 alternative.
Does anyone actually remember when we used PDAs? Smartphones are not just internet phones. For those who use the internet on it, do you really need 24/7 uninterrupted access? If you do, can you even begin to imagine another consumer who might not have your exact needs/usage pattern, or for whom that kind of connectivity isn't worth an extra $300 a year (you can get the TMo version for ~$500 no commitment, meaning 2yr price only saves you $150 and extra data costs you an extra $600)? Can you imagine a consumer with more offline needs than online, one who is only out out of wifi range for minutes a day, and during those minutes, doesn't really care about data access?
Do what you need to do for yourself, but keep your self-righteous lectures to yourself when you don't have a fraking clue what you're talking about. Not everyone is exactly like you.
have you considered waiting til 9/3 for the release on sprint? much cheaper data plan, and im pretty sure the cdma phone has an audio jack, nice little bonus
letstalk.com
needless to say that you can get it for 199.99 with letstalk.com. and still have to have the same data plan as if you went with tmob directly.
so you save yourself the extra 150. which in 6months equals that same 150 for internet usage during your first 6months that is required to have until your obligation is over to have so you wont be penalized under letstalk.con restrictions. so you break out even. with the difference that you get the 6months of internet plan totaling the same if you paid their 350 price.
but i am hoping att will get it. waiting to see. in the meantime i will play with my new (older) BA and hopefuly the exec
by the time my contract is over and if att gets it i will stick with them for the reason of granfathered plans.
you could just buy it off craigslist for $350-$450, depending on your local market. no data required
Or you could just buy the phone at full price $550 which doesn't require Data.
i'm glad i got grandfathered in on my old 19.99 unlimited internet plan but alas no free mobile to mobile with my old myfaves plan
Newegg.com has the TMO TP2 for $199 w/ new 2 yr contract and does not appear to be requiring a data plan with the purchase.
S
There is another solution, but only if you have a family plan.
1.) Buy the phone using promo code "Windows Mobile" through T-Mobile (found HERE)
2.) Add an additional line and get the TP2 for the discounted price
3.) Add the data plan to keep T-Mobile's panties unknotted
4.) Keep the phone for 3 weeks
5.) Call back after day 21 and tell them you do not want the line anymore.
6.) Pay the early termination fee ($200).
7.) Keep the TP2.
The phone itself normally costs $349.99 with a 2 year contract. With the promo code, you get it for $149.99 + $200 term fee = $349.99. Of course, the additional data plan will be prorated for those 21 days of "usage" which comes out to be around $17, but in the end you still have the phone and you can dump any T-Mobile SIM right in.
This is the BEST solution if you are one of the fortunate few who still have the T-zones service... which WILL do 3G! I've tested it on my friend's SIM card who still has T-Zones. I just hope he doesn't get any extra charges lol.
hi guys
i got my service with t-mobile last week, and ordered the $9.99 unlimited
internet, first thing when i open
opera redirects me to m.web2go.com and says "Subscription Required" and the rest of the internet apps wont work.
the guy told me that this service only works with very basic phones like a
motorola razr v3..
but i got the service anyways, thinking that i may find trick that i can
cheat the system, well so far i havent found anything..
what i'm thinking is that i might have to change the firmware/hardware info
so the system would think i'm a basic phone not a smart phone and it would work.
i'm using the Energy "Leo" 21892 ROM, not unlocked sim phone.
--
i've heard that people with iphones cheat the system very easy
i know i'm not the only one with tp2 with tmobile trying to use their
$9.99 service.. hope we make clear a solution that would help
other users too.
i would apreciate any kind of help and might buy you a BEER hehe
Go into connection settings and edit the connection for T-Mobile Data.
And then change it to internet2.voicestream.com
I use it all the time. 3G.
wow, fast reply, how do i proceed to do that using
this ROM: Energy "Leo" 21892 ?
step by step, i just installed it
Alright.
Click on your settings folder.
and click connections
After that, click connections
And then it'll say T-Mobile Data.
Add
Set up
Manage.
Click on Manage, and then click on edit for T-Mobile Data and put in
internet2.voicestream.com
Let me know if I missed a step
wow it did work!!
now i have the following questions:
by doing this am i getting bandwith that a 3g for smartphone ( $29.99 ) gets?
is there any cheaper way to get a talk plan, i picked the 500 minutes/Month
and i dont think i'll ever be able to use all of them..
can i get the $9.99 with prepaid phone?
--
i used the app called wi-fi router, routes my data internet to my laptop via wi-fi that's amazing.. compared to the rip-off montly service to get your own mobile broadband card that goes up to 50 dollars a month with verizon/sprint/att
Since you have unlimited internet, just go ahead and get rid of talk plan and download Skype. You can have unlimted talk (US & Canada) for only $2.95 a month to landline and mobile phones. But if you also want a number of your chosing then you'll have to pay an extra $3 a month along with it. However, they do not have caller ID for unknown numbers (cost extra), unless they are already added to your contact list. Mobile Skype feature still needs to be worked on, but if your not interested then I hope you can find another way to get cheaper talk plan on tmobile itself.
I got two free TP2s from T-mobile with activation two months ago using the WMDeals special. Currently, I've got a 1500 minute plan with unlimited messaging, and two smartphone internet plans. Total is about $180 a month.

I got that deal too and got 3 TP2s WITHOUT DATA OR TEXT plan. You really just need to know how to talk to the reps.
I did it again for someone else WITHOUT DATA, but had to get text.
Your chance realistically of lowering your data plan is SLIM, because they will ese you have a smart phone.
You have to pull some tricks to do that.. if you wish to know more, simply reply to this thread.

No longer working?
I tried this "internet2" thing a couple of months ago and it worked. I have since read some comments on the Net that it was no longer working. I just tried it again (even though I have the normal data plan and don't need it). I cannot connect to the internet with these settings.
I wonder if T-Mobile figured it out and cut out support? Maybe they can read forums...
does this apply to tmobile hd2?
I am using the 5.99 plan on my tp2. I just use epc.tmobile.com instead of the internet2. Still works. I was thinking of going to Sprint for the Evo but I was reading of the speeds possible with HSPA+ and I think I am just going to wait it out to get a phone possible of those speeds. I might get an HD2 from someone off of Craigslist just to hold me over.
Does anyone know how this is going to work? I'm an old G1 user, and it's come to my attention that T-Mobile USA has discontinued those talk+text+web data plans for $25 (or $35 for unlimited text). From what I see now, in order to get talk, text, and web, we'll be forced to pay the $30 for the web and $10 for unlimited text, with no other options. If I'm currently on a G1 data plan, can I just switch the device and keep my current plan? I'm guessing the answer is probably not...but I was wondering if you guys knew anything different.
I go the $25 web+400 txt.
And when i got my family plan they said they couldnt change that because if they did i would have to pay more for the web so they left that part alone. But on the switching from g1 to g2 idk if they will try to force an upgraded data on the line or not. I know if they try to do that to me i will raise hell. And they dont even have a 400 txt plan no more its only 1000, 1500 and unlim..
On their website, all I see is the "upgraded" $30 unlimited web. The only option for text is also the $10 unlimited text. I also have the $25 unlimited web+400 texts, and would like to keep that if I can. $40 per month is way too much to pay for what I had before.
I would just swap out my sim when the g2 comes and keep an eye on your bill. if they give you some bs about chaing your data plan, then fuse at them. Tell them you been with them for a long time and you want the rate you been getting. Even tell them your go to a different company. They will more or less change it back if they even change it.
Also its better to do this kinda stuff over tmobile.com so you have a recorded of what they said.
You will most likely have to update to the new $30 web and separate $10 text. Some accounts are able to keep the old data plan ($25 or $35), but most of the time you will have to switch to the current data plan or the order will not process.
It is possible that you will be able to stay on the old plan from the G1, and your best bet is to go in to the store or call customer care to order.

Thanks for the info. Now to "upgrade" and get a decent price (150-200), that requires signing a new 2 year contract. In this case, will I still be able to keep the current plan?
I know that if you have about six months of perfect on-time payments that that you can call loyalty and get a $20 per month unlimited data. Its called pref android unlimited web req. on my bill.

I'm obviously no expert since I started this thread, but my guess is that the $20 dollar plan you're talking about does not include text (you'll have to pay $10 more for unlimited text, there is no other option). The $25 dollar android plan should include 400 texts, I'm assuming that's the old G1 data plan (which I currently have on my G1).

Dont know if anyone has posted this before just figured I would put it out there for people because its a pretty damn good deal if you don't use many minutes

I have this plan on S3 After 5Gigs boom ''Up to 2G Speeds'' You won't be able to load a website, seriously, but when on HSPA+ I got as high as 18Mbit near tower
I switched to this from Sprint. You can also get it on T-Mobile's website - but not in stores.
Very happy. I looked at my average minutes per month and it was about 100 each month when including ones that didn't "count" toward my stated pool. Now I can pay a lower monthly fee and be able to not only do the calling I did before, but have a phone that does so much more than just make calls and text.
I get 4G in the city, only GPRS at work - although it's sometimes more reliable than our WIFI - so I'm not complaining (need to speed test it, it's slow but not unbearable).
When I was looking into it, one thing people mentioned was that you can use calls over data/wifi (VOIP etc) to make up for the 100 minute limit.
i've been using this plan($30 5gb unl txt 100 minutes) for over a year and i use skype for the voice calling(IIRC is a little under $3) for a total of about $33 and change a month. absolutely loving it. you can also just use just about any kind of voip but skype seems to be the most maintstream.
I actually used GooveIP on a loaner phone from a friend while I had no actual cell service - and on the SG3 before activating it.
Free and easy - you use Google Voice along with it as well, essentially making it a fully-featured phone just only able to function with a wifi connection. I know people that have gone "all the way" and dropped cell service for a wifi-only device, but I'm a bit too paranoid for that.

How would I change to this plan from the T-Mobile website?
I was entertaining this $30/mo 100/5GB plan, but have decided to go nearly all wifi. I only use the phone for checking voicemails, very rarely for calls, as I've tended towards Skype and GrooveIP for calls, but honestly I have nearly all my contacts using Heytell (voice 'walkie-talkie' uses data only) and they LOVE it...it's practically the only way we talk to one another anymore. I'll use my pay-as-you-go SIM with cheap minutes(Gold Membership already, my 1000+minutes are good for a year), for the rare cellphone call, and buy the Hotspot from Wallyworld, giving me 60 day data access (3.5GB) for $35...making my monthy cost around $20 month (approx. 17 data, 3 on SIM). Obviously, I'll use my wifi at home for music/Netflix, pretty much as I always have.

I'm on the $60 per month plan. I would change to the $30 but I don't want to get a new number, too much of a hassle n I'm pretty sure I need more than 100 minutes a month

You can port your number over, and additional minutes are only 10 cents, just keep a tenner in your account balance in case you go over.

How would I change to this plan from the T-Mobile website?

For the $30/mo plan, it's for new activations only - so you'd need to get a new SIM card and new account.

You can also port your number to Google Voice - thus, no matter what your number through the carrier changes to, you can ALWAYS have the same number with freedom to change whenever you want.

My Galaxy SIII is AT&T branded however it's on Straight Talk. I have it on their $45 a month 'unlimited' everything plan. The reason I say 'unlimited' is because well right now I'm down in Destin, Florida on a week long vacation. And it was a 12 hour ride from Tennessee. So I decided to do wifi tethering the whole way down with my laptop. I mean, 12 hour car ride. What else am I going to do?
I believe it's also worth mentioning that I'm on CyanogenMod 10 which is how I'm able to enable the built in wifi tethering.
I didn't use more than 300 MB. But they've limited me to 2G data. They might as well put me on a dialup connection, at least it would be faster and more reliable.
Now T Mobile has a cheaper pre paid plan. $30 a month for unlimited text and data, 100 minutes of talk time. Which is fine because I almost never use my phone for talking on.
The only thing is I need to have my phone unlocked to use their SIM cards.
Wouldn't this one work?

Yea but I think I might need to restore my stock rom.
Good thing I kept a backup of it.
IDK.
Nothing to lose in trying, especially since you can revert back..
