Its gotta be boring for developers with the lack of att support right? Can we get a developers opinion on this? I imagine theres only so much a developer can do. It sucks I threw down 249.99 for a phone that's poorly supported by at&t..

It's hard when carriers have control over updates. Ports can only get you so far and since they're not designed for our device it's hard to get everything working 100%. I personally don't like ports and try to stick with what was released for our devices, but some ports turn out better than others. You'll see a lot more development on newer devices and a lot of aosp based development on older devices because aosp bypasses the carriers but can be finicky sometimes because of the closed source proprietary libraries that carriers use.

As AT&T has always been the last to get updates if at all, the best way to send a message about that is to stop using AT&T. I have a work phone and tablet on AT&T that have never been updated from Gingerbread or Honeycomb respectively, yet the manufacturer has the ICS updates on their site.
At&t is pretty bad but nothing is worse than Verizon. I was with them for a long time and att is much better imo. It may be different is this case but historically Verizon gets updates last. I am going back to prepaid or tmo when my contract up though. I love all the ROMs we have for the gs3, even if they are ports they all work pretty good to me. I truly appreciate all the developer support this device still gets.

Definitely appreciate the developers for doing all that they do for us. Couldn't ask for more.
I may be leaving AT&T behind as well. I was thinking of heading to Sprint next year when the contract ends, depending on if Sprint's LTE coverage has improved. I'd really like truly unlimited data for the same/cheaper price than AT&T gives for pretty sad amounts.
Hmmm just buy the nexus its only $300 retail. Those are always up to date

I honestly think we would get source pretty soon especially since Samsung is basically encouraging rooted Samsung devices. My reason behind this statement is because they hired Cyanogen and gave his Team free Galaxy S2 phones.

I've also had the Vibrant. Sammy took a while to release official updates for it, but they did leak a very large amount of roms and the dev community was excellent. The biggest draw back of the Vibrant for me was the GPS and lack of led flash. Other than that it was an excellent phone in its time.TRUST ME SAMMY WILL RELEASE THE SOURCE FOR THIS PHONE AND THE DEV COMMUNITY WILL BE EXCELLENT FOR THIS PHONE.

If they don't I will be getting at Nexus prime. I think they are waiting till the telus variant releases.
Samsung probably wants to but T-mobile might be telling them not to.
If the telus version gets source we can just use that I hope its basically the same phone with different branding.
I hope so

At&t GS2 already has source and its now rooted. That phone was released on October 2. So yeah 2-3 weeks tops we'll have source and be rooted. Hang in there!
To be honest this phone isn't my first choice I wish T-Mobile would of skipped the galaxy 2 and came out with a aws galaxy note. That probably would save gave T-Mobile millions of customers. Also gave me a reason to sell my galaxy tab 8.9 lol. Telus version comes the 19 all we can do is hope.
we'll definitely see the source
personally owning several Samsung phones, all of them having great support from both the community and from samsung
they could act faster if they had less devices on the market, but ... insanely enough they have like at least 6 version of every main line, that slows down their release process
just need patience
I think the mistake was realized with the vibrant. I believe they know and support what their customer base wants. They are a strong competative force and want to keep their customers happy. We will see frequent updates and root and massive mods.

I really think the vibrant thing was more tmobiles fault and not Samsung. I say this because there were so many leaked builds for gingerbread. If Samsung never intended to release the upgrade then why would they spend all that time making different builds. I see Samsung supporting this phone for a good while. This is their baby and that new prime is google's baby. The focus for Samsung will continue to be making touchwiz better.
Samsung has already flexed its muscles by dictating to the US carriers what the GS3 will look like and be named. Despite this, Sprint seems to be calling the shots with this Epic Touch ICS update right now by holding it back for the GS3 launch.
It is pretty clear (to me at least) that FF18 will be the OTA release for ICS. I think at this point Samsung should basically just give the finger to Sprint and "accidentally" leak the source for FF18 for the Epic Touch.
I mean really, what do they have to lose?
Its all about the Benjamins you know the motto.... If they leak the upgrade now you may or may not want to get the GS3 but if they hold off and the GS3 is your only way of getting ICS then hmmmmmmm...
Let the GS3 hit the streets for a week or two and they get their initial money and then they will probably give us our upgrade to ICS. You know how it is, just like record sales or movie sales the first week is usually the big one.
Bottom line I think its all about how to generate the most revenue out of this
You dont bite the hand that feeds you

Sprint is doing the same thing to the Evo 3D users too, hold off on the update & sell as many Evo LTE's & GS3's as possible, I don't like it either, but its business. I'm just hoping that Samsung will release source early like they did for Gingerbread on the Epic last November, we had source almost 3 weeks before Sprint pushed the update.
Sent from my CM9 powered E4GT using Tapatalk 2
Why would Sprint drop ICS on the S2 before the S3 with ICS hits the shelves? Thats the dumbest business move ever. Of course they are gonna wait a bit for the S3 to generate some cash then when they feel they have pulled enough subscribers, theyll give the older ones their treat. Yeah Sammy could screw Sprint over and leak the source but that would not make Mr. Hesse happy and Sammy doesnt wanna do that. Like edlivian said Sprint brings Sammy a decent piece of the pie. Why would they intentionally burn that bridge?

I'm not interested in them releasing the OTA before the GS3 has its turn in the sun, guys, just source. Most people don't know what to do with source anyway so how can it hurt?
I might be mistaken on this but there is another legal aspect:
GPL was mentioned on another thread regarding the eMMC fix that stated it would violate GPL to release source if the official release did not match. Since no official confirmation has come from Sprint that FF18 is the OTA I don't think they can legally do it until that is given to them.
Oddly enough the i777 source hasn't dropped either so it also might be that they're holding back until a solution for the eMMC lockup is both in agreement, developed and passed to carriers. That is purely speculative though as follow-up inquires to OSRC, Mr. Sumrall and Samsung R&D have so far been unanswered.
I understand they want to make money but hasn't this phone not even been out a year yet? I don't know about everyone else but really, who the hell can upgrade to the gsIII or evo lte without going off contract and paying full price?? U guys make no sense. It's not time for our upgrade yet!

If u have bad service where u live well that just sucks. But as much as we hate to admit it Sprint really does have the best plans for the price I think. I get pretty decent service where I live. Never had wimax and definitely will never see lte but that's ok. I'm probably not alone on not seeing lte. Unlimited 3g is still nice though. I just don't see how people justify them not giving us source because of the gsIII. I don't know about u but I don't have 600 bucks to throw away when I haven't even had this phone for a year yet.

yeah im not sure why so many people are complaining. If u want the official ICS that badly go blow ur money on the GS3 a year after u bought the GS2. Otherwise you have to wait just like everyone else. Don't expect the newest technology to just be handed to u on a silver platter just cuz you own an earlier version of it. Sprint doesn't owe you a thing. No where in your contract with them does it state that they "owe" you and OS upgrade in x amount of time. They do OTA upgrades as a courtesy when it makes sense to them. They are in the business to take customers away from other carriers and keep their current ones mostly satisfied on the side. If that's not enough then thats the beauty of capitalism. Find another carrier and pay more. You can't have it all.

Well like I already said I'm happy with Sprint. They have good price for their plans which r Truly unlimited. And I'm running ics right now so it's all good. And from what some people with that device have said they aren't that impressed anyway.

Besides getting software releases first, why would anyone choose a Gnex over a s3? Development? Prolonged support? Hate for Touchwiz? Had plenty of development and support for my Captivate. Software can only do what the hardware can support. Why limit your capabilities? Less ram, only a 5MP camera, and slower processor. I waited 3+ months for s3 instead of getting a Gnex.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Honestly the only reason i can ever see anyone picking the gnex over the siii these days is for the dev support (Jb and other updates right away) and the attractive price it is offered for in the states if you buy from the play store. Otherwise theres nothing else.
Prolonged support? Galaxy S III will have it as well, the support is still in its infancy though
Hate for touchwiz? There's always Nova/Apex Launchers for that
Development? Whatever the Gnex gets, the GS3 will likely get it too at some point
Software updates first? Galaxy S III will always get the samething eventually, JB builds are progressively getting more stable
It's really short-term benefits vs. long-term gains. If you like the short-term benefits and the cheaper price tag, Galaxy Nexus is for you.
Another thing you might add is that I can easily get 16-20 hours out of my phone. It's a very solid built phone with fantastic support. I own the unlocked GSM model sold by Google. I just bought the S3 because it's so damn sexy. The GNex is nice, just not as slim and sexy as the S3.
IMO the GNex is the all-round best phone out. Some other phone are better in certain areas, but the GNex really does what it needs to very well.
I paid $100 for my s3 from ATT and I can easily get 20+ hours out of my battery.

If developer support wasn't as strong as it currently is on the s3 I would definitely be considering the gnex though.

You might want to ask this question in the GNEX forum. You're asking why choose a Nexus over an S3. But most of us have chosen an S3 over a GNEX which is why we are in this forum. I guarantee you'll hear a whole different range of answers over there. lol
But hoenstly, GNEX is last year's hardware and even then, even the SGS2 matched it in *some* harwdware specs. Other than updates and some really good dev support there really isn't much else. Perhaps this year's round of Nexus devices may look more promising
At the end of the day its all choice though.

Maybe it's just this will be the third time I have gone through this. First with the behold 2, was promised to us that we would get froyo, which never happened. Second with vibrant, which was promised gingerbread, which also never happened. After that I went through nexus s, nexus s4g then galaxy nexus. Gnex was a bad daddy phone that still can hang with the newest. I was on the fence whether to get nexus 4(which my wife has) or the note. I decided that the screen and pen were more important to me then having newest software. I knew 100% what I was getting into. In the past I have complained to tmobile, signed petitions, complained to samsux, with null results. You may call me a corporate sheep, while I call myself an educated consumer.

one scenario would be once samsung releases the final build -- cyanogenmod gets ahold of it and and puts together a tmobile port for it -- and they start charging for roms maybe. they are in business now to make money and their stable roms tend to be just that.. i'd pay a reasonable amount for a stable rom with all the bells and whistles. I said CM since they went public as a corp- other modders have great roms too

Doubt cm will port an OEM ROM, and especially now that they are technically a OEM. Their goal is to sell the cm experience. Now that they are a corporate they are now for profit. Now no one knows exactly how they are going to acneive that goal. Ads, teaming up with an OEM like Google does with lg and has done with Samsung and HTC. Maybe they will have their own app store. Maybe charge for the installer. Who knows

Where did you hear of the leak? I haven't seen it yet
Why is the right door always locked?

Why is the right door always locked?

Yup... Which means ours should be soon:good:
I am probably moving on from this phone to either G2 or Nexus 5. From a developing standpoint it looks like I would be able to contribute a lot more to G2. However, I have been pretty busy lately and would love to be continuously updated with the latest android. What do you guys think?
G2 but that's just my two cents as I'm sure a lot of people will say Nexus 5.

What would the reasons be?

Bigger screen, I like the back button design, hardware that will keep up with other phones for quite a while.

Given LG's history of releasing a new flagship device every 6 months and quickly forgetting about their previous flagship phones when it comes to software updates, Nexus 5. (It'll feel newer longer.)
The Nexus 5 is GSM and CDMA compatible; higher resale value down the line.
While the Nexus 5 has a smaller battery, the built-in wireless charging capability (also featured on the Verizon LG G2) means occasional top-ups throughout the day are easy and convenient. While the wireless charging pads don't come with the Nexus 5, the price difference between it and the G2 mean you can afford at least two (one for work and one for home).
If you're considering a mobile provider that gives you a discount for not subsidizing a phone, the Nexus 5's retail price of $349/399 (16/32GB) versus the LG G2's ~$600 can save you a lot of money over the course of your carrier's contract.
TL;DR: Unless you need the 3000mAh battery, 5.2" screen, IR blaster, or moar megapixels... I'd advise the Nexus 5.

You'd be getting a sprint variant presumably right? The LS980 dev forums could use a little pick me up, roms are being built for multiple variants in one, and while thats cool and all, it would be nice to see LS980 specific roms/kernels. Since the N5 community is over saturated to be honest, another dev wouldn't matter much on the N5 seeing as everything over there has been built or is in the process. On the G2 however a new dev would be more appreciated seeing as there only a handful comparatively speaking of devs working on the sprint variant, hope this gives you some help on your decision!

I love being able to contribute by building ROMs, but I have been super busy with life and work. I am happy with my decision to get the optimus g, but with 4.4 ROMs and most ROMs in general being glitchy it really makes me want the nexus so I can be constantly updated without many issues. I agree that the nexus won't need anymore devs, but maybe that's not a bad thing for me. I already feel bad when I don't have enough time to get something out to you guys.

I'm thinking of going with the nexus 5, i orderered one from the playstore for my mothers x-mas present and it showed up yesterday. its fast and light as hell. I'm seriously thinking that not having a contract anymore and a cheaper phone bill would be nice.

Even if you don't have the time to bring something to the table now, It's still pleasing to know that at some point you'll have time, should you join us over on the LS980 that is. It's not the quantity of releases that matters most, it's the quality. And right now we don't have much of either for LS980.

I personally may be going with the Nexus 5. Until then, you'll be missed on this forum. (I'm assuming you'll stop deving for us if you get a new phone to focus on)

Tempting. Sprint is being stupid as usual about working with me to stay a customer. I might be switching to t mobile. I heard that their data speeds are good but voice service sucks. Can anyone comment on that? I have been having terrible service with sprint lately and no 4g where I live so t mobile might be a huge upgrade.

I'd think it fitting to do exactly and only what is right for you, and no one else.
As to voice + data services, these vary by region of the country. It took 2 years where I live for Sprint to go from selling 4G LTE phones and charging for them monthly to actually delivering on it. Now, I couldn't be happier with the data and voice quality (though voice has never been an issue where I reside).
T-Mobile may be great where you live, and based on what you've stated about wanting time for you and wanting a trouble-free update experience, go with the Nexus 5 and be done with it.
I wish you luck.

I appreciate all the opinions and thoughts. I ended up going with the nexus 5 on t mobile. I did the jump program so maybe in 6 months if I have the urge to contribute more I will try something different.
