Stock random reboots - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello everyone. My wife has a newly purchased S4 from Tmobile. We rooted it right away and installed TWRP. Everything else is stock. Even kept the bloatware hanging around... She has had some random reboots from time to time not often but like 3-4 times since she has had the phone. Google searches turn up random bits of info so I thought I'd ask the experts here at good olé XDA. I've seen some advice to factory reset but wouldn't that lose root? Also some say it could be SD card related.. There is no common theme to it happening.. I guess we could return it. I was hoping to avoid that though... Any thoughts? Thanks for any help!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

Yes it will lose root but it's better than the phone rebooting itself alot so if it still does it then try to flash a rom and if it still does it it might be the phone then
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium

Factory reset won't actually loose root. Root stuff is stored in the system while factory resetting wipes the user's data. Factory reset through TWRP would be my first recommendation

So as far as I know simply rooting doesn't cause this issue... My gut says no but this is a new phone to me...

Simply rooting does not. Touching system stuff can so yeah simply rooting wouldn't cause that.

What did she recently install? if anything. Some apps will cause random reboots. And the answers here are correct, you will not lose root doing a factory reset.

Well thanks we may try that. She hasn't installed anything new really. She's not the techie I'm more likely to have RR than her.. Lol. We just rooted used TB to restore basic apps like Go Launcher and such. No system restored apps at all. We may try factory reset and then if that doesn't work we may return it... Thanks for the help.! Feeling the XDA love today...

And if you do decide to return it, clean it up, don't need no surprises at the att store oops my bad, scuse me, T-Mobile store. Sorry, forgot where I was at, and the wife beatin on me.
Btw, thanks for supplying us with your device info here, it aides in the help. Others just do not get it.

If I was you I would Odin back to stock.
Then gaining root again is only a tiny problem.
CF-Auto Root literally takes about 25 seconds to root.
Refer to this thread to odin back to stock.

Refer to this video to root again.

You're probably getting reboots because of the method you used to root.
I was getting tons of problems with my phone because the way I previously rooted the device.
I used this way and I get absolutely no more problems.
Now, after you root with the above method, you will have to install a custom recovery (I recommend TWRP).
Do that through goomanager.
(Search goomanager in app store, install, open, hit menu, then hit "install custom recovery.)
Hope this helps.
Damn, Eflip douche is on a roll today.

Thanks for the info. She appears to be on an MDL baseband. Would it work with that? I forget exactly which thread I used to root it.. I used Odin and some zip files with TWRP and it seems like we had to do something with the bootloader... This was a few weeks ago.
And a follow up question. How would the rooting method effect the stability of the device, Causing RR added such?

Ah yes the TWRP root method.
That's the faulty method that is causing problems.
Once you odin to stock by following the steps in the thread above, everything will be taken off the phone, it will absolutely work with that baseband, yes.
Use the CF Autoroot method in the video I posted above and follow the steps i explained about goomanager.
You will love being rooted with TWRP from goomanager. You will then be able to flash custom roms which will make the phone a lot speedier and more responsive. In most cases, better battery life also.
(I am on the Darthstalker rom and it is super fast!)

Well great thanks! I will do this. We will most likely not flash a custom rom for her purposes. If I root per the method above would it be necessary to install TWRP via Goo? If we're not going to be flashing mods and roms to her phone I'm not sure what we would use it for...

There are more than one dev who posted a rooted stock ROM so its hard to tell. When a new OTA comes out, a rooted stock ROM would be available soon after.
Thank you for all of the responses, I am enlightened. I am simply going to hold on this nandroid file and give the GB beta that is burning a hole in my pocket a try.

HELP.

My wife is going to be pissed if this does not get resolved.
I wanted to backup her phone. I already flashed Mr X's telus stock rom a week or so ago. I realized I hadn't done a nandroid backup so I though i'd install rom manager to quickly backup that rom. When I selected it it said clockworkmod recovery wasn't installed so I started the process to flash it (i thought it was strange). It went slow and I thought that I'd flash it again for good measure.
I selected the backup option expecting it to reboot into recovery and back up but nothing happens. I tried to pull the battery and boot into recovery but nothing but black, same with a regular pull and try to boot. I get the boot screen for a second and nothing but black. It will go into download mode.
My guess is it did not flash cwm successfully and this is the cause of problems. How can I fix this without having to wipe even if I can get recovery flashed properly? Can I flash cwm onto it from my pc and possiblly have it boot properly?? I would like to not have to set her phone up again and wipe her sms and things.
Thanks
Flash CWM from ODIN.

[App]Google Wallet Installer

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S3.
Requires ROOT, an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, and BUSYBOX!(A deodexed ROM is just recommended)
My newest project, RemoteFlash, was just released! Take a look and give it a try!
Wallet Installer Is Now Available For Free To All Supported Carrier Models On XDA! (Donations Appreciated)
My application, "Wallet Installer", will install Google Wallet on almost any US based Samsung Galaxy S3. It simply edits your build.prop and then places the correct modifications into your system. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which is pretty quick. Just select the appropriate Rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz, and then your carrier: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or US Cellular. I also added a restore option for your build.prop, so you can restore it after you setup Google Wallet. Hopefully this helps you out and makes the process easier!
Wallet Installer has been updated on the server side. The credit goes to Paul Obrien for the new version! To install it, simply reset Google Wallet, delete it, and then rerun Wallet Installer! Make sure to also have BusyBox installed/updated!
Please donate if my work helps you : )

It does. Backing up the current recovery is a very possible future update though. I just got the other carriers supported, so that wasn't my main concern at the time. You can simply flash back over it with whatever recovery you prefer.

That's the point of the restore build.prop option. As long as you have your cards already setup in wallet, you can restore it and your device will be registered as an S3, and Wallet will still work.

Its not hard to root or unroot, although its normal to hesitate on potentially bricking anything as expensive as the GNII.
Just remember, you only have to unroot if you have to take the phone back. 70 bucks on an otterbox has me covered for the occasional slip. As far as flashing concerns, theres generally a way to unbrick everything but lets say the modem (which apparently already has a fix) or system is corrupt, the stock roms and triangle away app are available for flashing and reseting counters respectively.

I've never went through for warranty for a phone I bought outright but for the last company (virgin mobile) when I went for the warranty, I just unrooted the phone and locked the bootloader and it was fine. I don't think they would go all out to check if you rooted the phone. I forgot if they could check or not, but most of the time (IMHO) they wont. Unless they really don't want you to fulfill the warranty.
Well im willing to root lol stock is slow and it lags -_- and I hear some echo. When im on the phone.
Is this rootable?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
That's rootable. I just re-rooted after the update to LL4 two days ago.
I bought my phone in November, which means it's still under warranty - I've rooted and unrooted and rerooted the phone about 3 times now just to make sure I've got the process down and nothing weird happens to it.
The way I rooted that worked for me was to root using CF auto root through ODIN. Then to unroot, I ran Triangle Away, then unrooted through SuperSU full unroot, and for good measure, I ODIN'd the T-mo stock firmware back on the phone. At the end of that process, I was factory reset back to a clean phone with 0 flash counter and status was normal.
So now I'm rocking an unlocked, rooted, stock rom phone, and I love it.

Okay...I wanna try #2...but I dont see any CWM or can I just download it from play store. The twrp...I like that one more since I would use it on my s2.

Option 2 doesn't load a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP). It just roots the phone, but you'll still have stock recovery. If you want a custom recovery, you'll need option 1.Or, flash the custom recovery separately after you do Option 2.
What about option num.3?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Option 3 only works if you're not on baseband LL4. Once you've updated to LL4, the exynos exploit was closed, so if you're still stock uprooted by LL4, then you'll need to do option 2.
If you're still on valk8, then yeah, you can use option 3.

OTA update the easy way

Can I just relock with Freegee accept ota and reroot? Or, is it more involved? After all the issues I've had on both of my phones, I don't want to have to LGPNST again.

You should be able to. As long as you don't have ANY mods at all. Apps should be fine.

No mods. Does the restore and backup button on Freegee take you to the stock bootloader and original locked state? Lots of trouble with TWRP on this phone. On the evo it worked perfect every time.

Yes. It should anyway. But if TWRP has been giving you issues, I'm not so sure I'd trust doing the ota. TWRP is our best recovery for now. You might want to update manually.

Yeah. I was noticing everyone doing the manual with radios etc. I guess I can always do LGPNST again. This phone is awesome and a pain in the ass at the same time

I'd love to know how this goes. I think I want to do the same thing. I'd rather just use freegee to re-lock it, then re-root after doing the JB update. However, if flashing the radios and then the stock rooted JB update is better then I'd do that. In fact I think that is the same steps as going with lifeless from ZV9 and if that is the case I may do that. Still, I'd love to know if this works while I try and figure out to go with Lifeless or Rooted Stock JB.

If you follow this, it should work. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35520144&postcount=1
The ota section. I just ran thru doing all of this, this morning. With and without Freegee. No issues.

I would think you do #2a first then accept update. Thank you for the first test run. As soon as I understand accepting update before relocking I'm going to give it a try.

OK. So....all zvb'd now?
Weird... It said zvb update, I installed it.. took about a minute and rebooted. Still on zv9 and now there are no updates available. Still rooted though. Getting tired of dealing with this phone.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Very strange. Well, there's still a few options.
1. See if Sprint will swap it out. :/
2. Manually push the update.
3. autoprime and Shelnutt2 just put out a zvb.bin. You can get it from the irc for now. And make sure to follow the directions in the last post of my guide. It had to be modified to get it unlocked.

Yeah this is phone has had its issues. I appreciate your help. Not sure why it's saying update not available now. I'll wait and decide how to move forward.

Here's what's happening... I was able to force the OTA by going to apps settings and choosing Google services from All clearing data then force close reboot setting updates lg software update. Accepted, process begins then red triangle and upon reboot, still on zv9. Just in case this helps us understand what's happening. Not eager to do anything with TWRP.
