USB OTG CABLE for a rooted Xperia Arc - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been not that active a couple of months. But recently caught a video on YouTube using this so called USB onthego cable on a Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
The actual device which I am about to switch to.
Man, I was facinated.
The thought of increasing the memory volume on a meagre device such as an Arc was incredible.
You don't have to stash your full HD movies or your 1K odd of music downloads in your PC nomore, just to make room on your 32GB so that the device don't lag further.
For now the Galaxy note 2 can wait.
Been hard at googling and reading all about USB OTG cables.Could not find a proper cable which is suitable for a rooted SE Xperia Arc LT15i on AOKP M1R3 custom rom with Fusion kernel ver5.5
In some it says you would have to mod it to mount into the USB slot and some says it works great.
Then again there's the USB OTG helper app which also says it might not work on some devices.
So,is there anyone here who use this cable on a rooted xperia arc.Would oblige to hear what your recommendations be.

I am not sure, if Fusion and JB ROMs actually have USB OTG support. Stock GB (most likely ICS aswell) do have this feature.
As for the cable, there is only one type, that can be used - female USB to male microUSB aka USB On-The-Go cable.

I've bought a cheap OTG cable at ebay (€ 0,99 inc transport) and it works perfectly (UHD 4.0 and Lupus v.16 - OTG should be enabled on lupus menu)
And you need to use USB OTG Helper (just download it from play store).

Alternative to dock for OTG and charging?

OK guys, about to order a livedock but wanted to quickly check if there was any other cables available to enable me to charge my phone while using the OTG function.. Seems the whole mobile community is looking for this.. Samsung galaxy S2 users are even worse off because they can't use Hdmi at the same time as OTG! I've looked all over but seems Sony Ericsson is the only company to have made a charge while using otg dock /cable any other ideas from you smart folk? Before I splash out on a livedock??

meh.. after quite a bit more googling I have come to the conclusion that the Livedock is infact the only way to charge the phone while using USB OTG.. I can't quite believe that there isn't simply a Y cable to do this.. (but I havn't been able to find one anywhere)
I have just ordered 2 livedocks from Ebay.. can never have too many right (well.. one for the tv and one for the bedroom)
The plan is to be able to have the phone plugged into the TV HDMI and a self powered USB hub (logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, Game controller + USB hard Drive\thumb drives for movies\music) and also charge the bad boy all at the same time the one next the bed is just for charging and perhaps a USB keyboard for those late night emails. (yea I could use Bluetooth, but these are still expensive and the extra hassle of pairing keyboards and mice to the phone is un-necesary when SE have given us good old fasioned OTG)
still interested if anyone finds out a different way.. I might pull one of mine apart and see if I can reverse engineere to make a simple Y split cable..

In the samsung galaxy s2 this is not an electrical but a software issue. As an experiment turn off your phone. Connect a usb Y cable to a power source and to the phone via the OTG adaptor. Hey presto, it charges the phone through the otg connector.if you now connect a usb device to the other connector on the Y the phone wiill not see it. Likewise if you connect the usb device and the power THEN connect the cable to the phone it will see the device but will not charge. Both variations with the same bit of dumb cable and the same devices on the same connectors. Something in the usb / charging control software must be blocking both otg and charging from working concurrently.

I heard also Xbox 360 wired remotes work as well
I have a chinese non-oem OTG cable and works fine with pretty much every USB devide I have (usb memories, keyboard, mouse). I havent tried game remotes or a printer.
Not as amazing as the adapter Samsung will be releasing whenever they can be bothered because it will use the full 11 pins and allow MHL and other accessories simultaneously, but like always they take so long releasing accessories people just get pissed off while they waiting.
Yes Micheal 100% acceptable. only advantage for OTG cable was they launched long back after few months from Galaxy SII. But same cable we are using it for Galaxy Note and Galaxy SIII. But we are really worried for Flip Cover launch for SIII. it took nearly 2 weeks time from SIII mobile launch.
There are plenty of local manufacturers releasing case and covers and even OTG cable. only this guy has the original samsung OTG cable in India shopsection.com/item/USB_Host_OTG_Cable_for_Samsung_Galaxy_S_3 for sale with offer price.

You need MHL cable to connect HDMI to Tv and you can't connect over Mass Storage mode to Tv, Car etc because Samsung in their wisdom decided not to include it, and I know iPhone has things like blood pressure and heart rate monitors you can connect but never heard of it on Android, but it's possible to create a driver to connect pretty much anything with a USB port to Android.
Bought this otg cable for cheaper rate in local market, it worked for 2 months but i could not connect my Sony Pendrive 8GB. any application needed to upgrade on my Note to support 8gb? can your post me the link whr u purchased samsung otg cable, how long u hv been using it? is that original with warranty?

The first thing that you need to check is how your thumb drive is formatted. I haven't tried a thumb drive on my SIII yet but on Atrixs I've evaluated they could only interface with FAT thumb drives. NTFS wouldn't work. You should also try a different model of thumb drive, I don't know about the power requirements but it might just be too high.
USB On The Go cable awareness not upto the level. Samsung must advertise about their accessories too as like Nokia. OTG cable is really useful to access files instant. but i wonder why its only suitable for very few models and since Galaxy Y is also has update android firmware.
anybody tried OTG cable other than S III?

I think the external hard drives will only work if you use a usb port multiplier with a external power source. Dont quote me on that though!

I have actually try plugin my external hard drive with 2 headed USB cable, one connects to the USB OTG cable, one end connects to a USB port for power, and it still doesn't work.
It would be nice if it would work though.

USB OTG cable with charging - is that possible?

While researching ability to use USB DAC while charging the phone in the car I found this video. The guy clearly says that tablet is charging while accessing all those accessories via USB OTG. Similar cables are found on ebay, called "USB OTG with power".
The big question is: would the Galaxy S3 actually charge while using USB DAC at the same time? It should be possible, but I don't have the phone yet (still considering it), nor do I have the cable, nor a USB DAC In theory it should be the same with any accessory - can someone actually confirm either way, whether phone can or can't charge in USB OTG mode with similar cable? This video shows similar setup on Galaxy S (only it's normal OTG cable, USB hub, usb Y-cable and card reader) and it's definitely charging while mounting USB devices! Will S3 do the same?
I fear that upgrading from Galaxy S with voodoo control of Wolfson chip to north-American S3 with worse audio path might not suit me if there's no way to power the phone and use external DAC at the same time in the car... I hope there is a way... I appreciate any advice and opinions.
It's a first time I see such cable...All I read was people saying it's impossible in the first place. Well, hopefully in 2 weeks I'll be able answer your question

Looks like it's possible on some devices, but not with Galaxy and Nexus family... But it would be great if you can confirm that, so let me know if you can try it. Thanks.

Maybe the "Allshare hub" could do what your asking for?

Sonic, any luck with your friends phone? Really looking foward to your results :fingers-crossed:
Do you have part #s for the variable resistors in your samsung post or at least where you got them from? I would be willing to try some things out if I could find the right pieces. What I really want to get my hands on is the MHL adapter that was shown off with that spider laptop at IFA a couple weeks ago..
SUCCESS!!! I can confirm that this USB OTG cable (http://ebayitem.com/190710044655) DOES CHARGE MY GALAXY S3! I plugged in USB cardreader with SD card into the phone through this cable (it lit up and card is fully readable), then plugged USB cable end into PC and phone showed a charging icon! Moreover, after waiting for 5 min. with screen off (cardreader still glowing blue and working) battery has gone up from %72 to %75 (and while I was writing this, to 78%), so it is indeed charging! Yay! It probably won't get up in the car, where just phone alone is "not discharging" at best from the car adapter, but at least it should allow me to listen to music with quality DAC and use navigation without (or with minimal) discharging.
I have not tested it with USB DAC that I intend to use for my car (Behringer UCA222), because I have to go out and buy it. Hopefully it works. Anyway, this cable definitely works with simultaneously charging my north-american Samsung Galaxy S3 (from Bell Canada) while powering USB cardreader!
Somebody else has mentioned that another cable (http://ebayitem.com/120980364117) also worked in his Galaxy S2.
I bought Behringer UCA222 USB DAC and tested it in my car with the USB OTG cable with power that I mentioned. It works great! And the phone is indicating a charge. Sometimes when first playing music after plugging the device it sounds like fast forward for a few seconds (I guess clock rate mismatch or something similar), but after the presumably clock is locked it plays perfectly fine.

That is outstanding..gonna order one of these guys right now.
Here is a better link for all the ebay listings. Be aware of the differences, MicroUSB adapters would allow you to use your existing charge cable to plug into it while the standard USB would require you to be very close to the charger or have a USB A-A cable to attach to a power source.

The problem is that apparently not all of those cable work in terms of charging the phone. People say mostly that it doesn't work. The only guy mentioned success is with the cable I bought, but he then confirmed it with another, more convenient cable. I have the one that needs a USB extension cable to reach the charger, but it's about a buck on ebay, so no problem there. But not all cables work this way: most reportedly will allow you to power USB accessories but not charge the phone.
I found that this configuration works for charging while in USB HOST mode:
S3 -> standard otg cable -> Powered USB2.0 HUB -> devices (keyboard, usb dac, usb hdd...)
The only catch is that the hub must be powered before you plug in the phone or the phone will try to power the hub and will never enter charging mode. I'm using this setup in my car and it works perfectly. As long as I start the car before plugging the phone, we are good to go.
I only confirmed this works with AOKP JB builds. No idea about other roms/kernels. Hopefully this helps someone.

USB OTG Cable Doesn't Work Anymore

All the supported devices worked with my Note earlier. My USB storage, a pen drive formatted to FAT32 also mounted well. I had a good time exploring the Note as a cool mini PC connecting my keyboard and mouse until recently.
Now the OTG connector is ONLY detected with a notification saying "USB connector connected" but nothing happens after that. I am aware that power is available across the cable since my brother's Galaxy Ace starts charging and the LED symbol on my Razer mouse lights up but there is no activity on the Ace except charging and my mouse won't work.
I have tried USB Host Utilities and stickmount from d great developer but doesn't that doesn't help but increases my concern.
Has someone faced similar issues? Someone help please..

If not then you might need to carefully clean your data port.
Yup that works perfectly fine except for the usual Hardware ID missing error on the PC..

USB On The Go/ OTG not working, help.
I have a note n7000 on ICS 4.0 and am a first time android user, bought the phone a week back.
I tried using an 8gb flashdrive with an OTG cable. it didnt recognize the flashdrive at all, though it showed that a USB
cable has been connected.
Next i tried a 4gb flashdrive. It did recognize it but didnt show it in the "my files" list. notification says "usb storage is
empty or un-recognized format or such"
I installed the "USB host controller " app, that did'nt help. I tried to format the 4gb flashdrive in FAT32 with 1024 cluster
size and quick format mode, that didnt help either. I have attached the screenshots from the app.
i dont wish to loose warranty, and have never fiddled with drivers of android device before.
thanks a lot folks.

otg cable works on note 2....
hello friends,,when i bought note 2 almost two months ago i used same otg cable which i was using on galaxy s2 but after updating note 2 when i attached otg cable it just shows "usb connector connected" and doest not read the flash drive,,i searched a lot on the internet for solution but didn't found anything and then flashed many different roms to check out if there is any problem with the rom,,but same result..so today i bought a new otg cable superior than first one,,so i attached it and it works prefectly,,i have tested flash drive,,keyboard mouse all works smoothly..
So at last i concluded that there is difference in otg cables may be it is in the pins structure of the adapter of the cable,,some of the cables which works on the previous galaxy devices does not works on the current galaxy devices,,so when you choose a otg cable make it confirm it is the latest build which is compatible with your device..

OnePlus 7 USB-C Dock Advice

I just received the phone and tried to use it with this dock with no results (the power led lights on and android P notifications shows the connection with a USB device, however it is not properly recognized).
I tried with an USB key, a mSD and with a HDMI cable attached. Any advice on alternative solutions? (both HW and SW).

Thanks for the tip Sir. I rewrote the sentences in a clearer way to make them easily understandable.
I was using a third party DASH cable originally for my OP3, with my OP7P and noticed it does the same thing as your dock. Side note the OP7P could not be recognized in fastboot with said third party DASH cable.
But the OEM cable works without fail ever time could be pin/or chip? configuration but I don't know enough about Warp/DASH/VOOC to say.

I made some further tests and these are the results:
- With the dock powered with a PD cable (so charging the phone as well) the video signal works as expected but no other devices are recognized (I tried a USB key, a keyboard and the usual microSD but none are visible)
- Using a simple USB-C to HDMI cable the video out works like a charm
I think the USB issue might be related to the drivers needed to identify the device (a similar situation happened to me on the Nexus 7 several years ago and I fixed it changing the kernel). For now I think I will have to find a different dock. The best one for my needs should have 2 USB, mSD slot, HDMI and Ethernet. Any tips?

One further update:
I used the same dock on the Mi A1 with Android P and it is properly recognized with both the mSD and the USB key attached. Obviously there is no HDMI out since the port is only a USB 2.0 one rather than a 3.1 like the OP7P.
At this point I think it might be related to drivers only, because the notification for an attached USB is there but it is not simply recognized (to be honest if i use the PD-USB while having the mSD inserted, the phone is charged but no popup for attached USB device is shown in that case).

Yeah I'm having the same issue, tried an HP dock and a Dell dock. Neither one supported USB. I don't understand why this is, never had this issue on older model Android phones. Must be the drivers.
FYI - The HP one displayed the picture on the monitor via HDMI, but wouldn't charge the phone. Dell one would charge, but wouldn't support the monitor. I have another model Dell dock that I'm going to try next week that I think will work better.
Another quick update.
All the test were performed with OTG on and with USB debug enabled and disabled to see if there are any differences in results(no differences for now)
Atzbee Dock
- HDMI Out working even without an external power source
- No USB drive/key detected
- Phone charging works
EC Technology Dock
- HDMI Out working even without an external power source
- No USB drive/key detected
- Phone charging works
So how can we escalate this to OnePlus? We should not be having these problems.
I made some further tests with several devices.
original OP OTG
Works with every device so far (not tested with Ethernet)
Vava 8 in 1 old & Vava 8 in 1 new
HDMI, USB flash, sd card and transflash work at the same time (even without an external power source).
I am finding problems in the connection of a keyboard or mouse that are never recognized (except for the original OTG cable)
Ethernet is never recognized.
To make sure before I buy one, the vava 8 in 1 hub works with usb flash drive while charging the phone?

Yes (on USB 3.0), however it is confirmed that is a limitation of the kernel, since flashing a different one seems to make everything work smoothly as reported here.

So it only works on a modified device? (unlocked bootloader, flash new kernel) stock does not work?

it works on USB .3.0 on hubs with stock kernel, but no keyboards or mouse (charging always worked for me). Modifying is needed to achieve the full functionality of the hub
You have to flash a custom kernel to get the USB type C keyboard and mouse working! Stock kernel does not work! Flash it and whalla! read my thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/help/otg-usb-hub-recognizing-mouse-keyboard-t3936188
I just want to report that this issue has been resolved with Android 10. The HP dock I was using now supports the keyboard and mouse. Display and charging also still works.
Well that's a huge bummer, I regret buying the tmo variant. I reported this and chatted with one of the people there about pd+otg issues. I am able to get usb hubs to work if plugged into a c-typeA(f) adapter. That of course means no PD or HDMI, so it's awesome that Android 10 includes that fix!
