I bought a original Samsung USB OTG Cable for my Samsung Galaxy S3 from online store ( shopsection.com ) , can anyone post tips and tricks about it.
according to my testing, Most of all USB devices can access
1- Amazing cable, it works perfect in Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note
2- Connect pendrive 2GB, 4GB, 8Gb, 16GB and access files , documents, songs, movies instant from your S3
3- Like to draw anything without C-Pen stylus? connect USB mouse and draw anything u want as like in computer mouse cursor
4- feeling touch to type on touch screen? connect USB keyboard via OTG cable and start typing SMS and Emails.
5- Does your friends running out of battery ?, connect their mobile with their usb data cable to OTG cable and get charged
6- Also if your friend give access for "Mass storage" access his files from his mobile phone
7- want to take instant printout from your S 3, connect printer USB to OTG cable and give a shot
Article from other websites about OTG cable,
- Remote Access your mobile using Data modem
- support PS3 controller
also if anyone has more tips and tricks for this OTG cable, kindly post it. so thrilled to enjoy its benefits.
I heard also Xbox 360 wired remotes work as well
I have a chinese non-oem OTG cable and works fine with pretty much every USB devide I have (usb memories, keyboard, mouse). I havent tried game remotes or a printer.
Not as amazing as the adapter Samsung will be releasing whenever they can be bothered because it will use the full 11 pins and allow MHL and other accessories simultaneously, but like always they take so long releasing accessories people just get pissed off while they waiting.
Yes Micheal 100% acceptable. only advantage for OTG cable was they launched long back after few months from Galaxy SII. But same cable we are using it for Galaxy Note and Galaxy SIII. But we are really worried for Flip Cover launch for SIII. it took nearly 2 weeks time from SIII mobile launch.
There are plenty of local manufacturers releasing case and covers and even OTG cable. only this guy has the original samsung OTG cable in India shopsection.com/item/USB_Host_OTG_Cable_for_Samsung_Galaxy_S_3 for sale with offer price.

You need MHL cable to connect HDMI to Tv and you can't connect over Mass Storage mode to Tv, Car etc because Samsung in their wisdom decided not to include it, and I know iPhone has things like blood pressure and heart rate monitors you can connect but never heard of it on Android, but it's possible to create a driver to connect pretty much anything with a USB port to Android.
Bought this otg cable for cheaper rate in local market, it worked for 2 months but i could not connect my Sony Pendrive 8GB. any application needed to upgrade on my Note to support 8gb? can your post me the link whr u purchased samsung otg cable, how long u hv been using it? is that original with warranty?

The first thing that you need to check is how your thumb drive is formatted. I haven't tried a thumb drive on my SIII yet but on Atrixs I've evaluated they could only interface with FAT thumb drives. NTFS wouldn't work. You should also try a different model of thumb drive, I don't know about the power requirements but it might just be too high.
USB On The Go cable awareness not upto the level. Samsung must advertise about their accessories too as like Nokia. OTG cable is really useful to access files instant. but i wonder why its only suitable for very few models and since Galaxy Y is also has update android firmware.
anybody tried OTG cable other than S III?

I have actually try plugin my external hard drive with 2 headed USB cable, one connects to the USB OTG cable, one end connects to a USB port for power, and it still doesn't work.
It would be nice if it would work though.

Anyone know if it's possible to use MHL in conjunction with a microUSB to USB host adaptor to output to HDMI and access an external USB drive at the same time? That'd make the SGS2 an amazing portable media unit.
No, it is not posible. Its an either/or connection to the micro USB port.
Shame, because as you say that would really be a great thing. MHL consortium are considering a number of improvements to the 2.0 MHL spec, so in future devices this may be a possibility.
So MHL can't be used when I'll plug a USB-Hub?
No, sadly not.
It's a shame - for now I'd prefer micro USB & separate HDMI port so USB can be utilised as well as an external display.
As would I, and a lot of others I suspect.
But you've got 16 GB memory and can copy your stuff to the memory and watch it later via MHL on your Flat? So this is not a big problem, I think

Not that I'm aware of...
I bought one from Ebay and can't really do anything good with it. Display shows briefly for 3-4 seconds on TV then disappears again. Don't know why.....I hope it's not the device itself because I tested 2 phones, they were bought at the same time, but none of them would work correctly....
If by generic you mean a not samsung one or one not dedicated to the SGS2 then i actually use a one, from ebay or someting like that, everything works perfect you just cant forget to plug power to it, and about the not working one, it seems mine gets jammed by gsm signal (i.e. when receiving a call), so from time to time the image disappears in a blink of noise, maybe that is your problem too, try it in airplane mode.
Oh, I think I misread that question - I have actually used a generic one with my SGSII (a prototype from the MHL consortium) and it worked fine!

Uhm no. I've been streaming with WIFI through MHL no problem for MONTHS. Using the Original Samsung MHL connector of course.
I have to put mine in offline mode to be able to use the MHL adapter.....
As for USB-OTG no luck yet.....
On Amazon, Ebay, DealExtrem ... you will find adapters that can do 3 things at a time:
- output HDMI
- let phone work as usb host, so that you can plug kbd, mouse, and external HDD (second wifi card, wired ethernet ...); once you have the usb A plug, just pub a hub
- recharge the phone (what is not possible with the legacy short OTG cable).
+ read memory cards
Such devices are sold as MHL devices. Some MHL devices don't to all that.
Take care. MHLv2 is more complex than MHLv1.

Could you post a link as an example for such a device, that works properly (if you've tested, or you know it works) ?
Thank you
I can post links, but ... I have not tested any of those. And don't know any one personally who tested it.
Cable:
http://www.amazon.com/Juiced-Systems-MHL-Adapter-MicroSDHC/dp/B008CQKM2U
http://www.dx.com/p/5-in-1-micro-us...n-micro-usb-adapter-black-257780#.U8HYDNePul0
Monobloc:
http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Micro-USB-Ho..._MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item258600844e
I don't like the monobloc version; I fear it's too heavy, and may help breaking the phone plug.
There are all sorts of OTG and MHL cables. I have seen OTG dongles as short as 4cm (monobloc), with small cable (8cm: 4-8€), with long cable (1.5m .... should be 7 feet), pure HDMI (passive cable, no card reader, 8-12€), VGA (including very cheap HDMI to VGA converter, 20-30€ ... including sound output). In some case, you need to buy accessories (extra power supply, extra uUSB cable, extra HDMI cable). Also seen a very cute hybrid card reader: http://dx.com/p/285865 (I love this product design, and I love this URL syntax )
Don't forget that there can be mistakes in item description.
Here I have described how to build an external battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54036759&postcount=17
On previous phone, I just soldered additional battery to internal one; on my new phone, I will do something more complex, and more flexible.
Loosing power via OTG/MHL is not a fatality. Most phone have an other hidden power input:
généric, that uses the USB plug:
http://www.dx.com/p/reverse-qi-wire...arger-receiver-for-micro-usb-cellphone-312805
TRIPLE CHECK POLARITY; I took the wrong one; have to fold the cable.
So ... even if your OTG/MHL module takes power from your USB, and can not recharge your phone, the specific shell can charge your phone the other way So, you need to build an internal specific module:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK7PRJ4SiK0
S2 specific back shell, so called receiver:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2013-newest-wireless-charger-for-samsung-galaxy-s2/1266101036.html
http://www.exportprive.com/en/batte...reless-charger-set-for-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/QI-Wireless-Charger-for-Samsung-Galaxy_821969998.html?s=p
The SGS2 is not designed to accept wireless chargers, so, you have two options:
- solder and take the pins out (cf youtube) (do not solder coild to battery, or you could overcharge the batt, and burn your phone ... I mean, physically set fire)
- find an item that includes back shell + specific battery (exportprive)
Many recent phones have the internal connectors, so you just need to change the back-cover. In this case, the software will be able to know the charger is wireless (as opposed to AC, and USB; advanced battery tools will show those 3 possibilities). I believe the motherboard for my HTC One M8 is designed to have those pins, but I can't find the specific cover yet (maybe in a few months); only found it for M7.
In short, its not working for me.
I use the Samsung usb cable + female USB to micro USB adapter to connect to the ps3 controller.
Anyone had better luck?

If you're just taking the USB cable that came with the tablet, changing it's gender and plugging something into the end, it won't work. The tablet would need to have USB Host support which this tablet does not. I believe that the Samsung USB Adapter that converts directly from the Samsung Connector to USB Female will add USB Host support (USB OTG).
Here is the USB Adapter. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-1PL0BEGSTA

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Honeycomb 3.1 adds SOFTWARE support for USB Host funtionality. The device has to have HARDWARE support as well. This tablet does not. That is the reason that you need a special adapter that provides USB Host HARDWARE funtionality, such as the one I listed above.

Yes. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. The tablet DOES have USB Host capability, but it will only enable it when it sees a specific resistor on a particular pin in the dock connector.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155065 for more details.
To get USB Host, there are two approaches:
1) Make your own cable with the correct resistors
2) Purchase the Samsung USB Host adapter which is now available for around $20.
Note that there are some limitations:
1) Xbox360 controllers and PS3 controllers are not standard HID devices and require kernel support not present in stock kernels. Pershoot's kernel has the necessary modules.
2) PS3 controllers must be fully charged before trying to use them. If not they will try to charge their battery from the tab and cause an overcurrent trip, disabling the port until the USB dongle is disconnected.
Also, Samsung didn't mangle the Bluetooth stack like they do with their phones, so wiimotes work.
Not working for me
Not sure if there's a specific USB setting, but I bought the adapted and it works with Chainfire's DSLR Controller no problem. I plugged in the playstation 3 remote and had no luck, nor any detection of the device. Tried running an n64 emulator to try to map the keys, no luck there either.

Which kernel are you running? Did you read my notes in the post prior to yours at all?
So, if i get the official USB adapter my regular wireless keyboard (Logitech Wave) should work seamlessly. Right?
I've just been using the "SixAxis Controller" app from Dancing Pixel (you can find it on the Android Market) to connect my PS3 controller to my tablet over Bluetooth. It's worked great for me (note: I use yongzh's emulators)
Hope that helps with the PS3 issues...I don't really know much about the USB adapter as I don't use it.

I've just tried my N8s adaptor but no luck I'm afraid. It's connector to the phone is thicker and simply won't fit into the Note.
Nokia (at least the official cable) uses the "correct" Micro USB A for Hostmode.
You have to get Micro USB B for the Note.
(B cable fit in A but not otherwise)

Are you referring to those external hard drives that take power from the USB port?
What about those external hard drives that take on a separate power supply, those that are attached to a power socket? Anyone tried plugging in one of those to a Note?
ok I just buy one and it did work fine with sandisk 64gb.
so it's confirmed that it can read portable drives.
looking forward to owning one.
Guys,
I was wondering whether it´s possible to have a "connection chain" like this to the GNex ???
1.) Connect an OTG cable to the micro USB port of the GNex
2.) Plug a standard self-powered USB hub into the OTG cable
3.) Apply an USB-A to Micro-AB adapter and so connect the Samsung Micro-USB2HDMI adapter to the USB hub
4.) Connect a Logitech game pad
5.) Connect a USB stick, portable drive, ... you name it
What´s the purpose you´re sure about to ask ... Well, launch any emulator on the GNex, bring the video output to my 46 inch plasma and gamble old games with the game pad over the GNex.
Do you think, it´ll work? I don´t wanna spend all the money for all the adapters and stuff ending up in a mess.
Cheers
Christian

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0073EPXO4/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is what I'm using. Cheap & works great & is pretty thick, I feel like it'll last long.
I use this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YPYORM/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
purchased from seller: Atomic Market for around $10
It has the additional bonus of being able to accept power via its additional USB cable.
I find the Nexus 7 LTE 2013 does not need the additional power for typical USB thumb drives, but it might be needed for other devices like an external disk drive.
I find my Chromecast must have this cable powered in order to use a USB thumb drive to root and replace the android operating system.
You can save a few bucks for a cable that does not provide power if you want.
I also own this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(purchased from amazon seller: Digital Center(Ships From Hong Kong)
which only costs $1.49 with free shipping. It was $0.83 when I purchased it last year.
It works on the Nexus 7 LTE 2013 with USB thumb drives, but does NOT provide additional power for devices which may need it.
Can you confirm thath this otg power cable charges the nexus 7 2013 while still reading peripheral data from usb port?

I can only confirm that both OTG cables I own work on the Nexus 7 2013.
i am using one that came with my minix x5 and it works on all my android devices, but the connection is loose. i would be surprised if there was one that did not work as the cable itself is such a simple thing.
i would also like to know of a working powered option. i thought the powered cables only supply power to the accessory, not to charge the device itself.

Since you have the USB OTG cable with the additional cable for charging, would you mind testing it by:
1). Connecting a working USB device (mouse, HDD, etc.)
2). Connecting the USB power to the 2nd cable in the OTG cable
I am trying to use a BT keyboard and non-BT wireless mouse and charge the N7, but unfortunately, it drains the battery down heavily.
PS: I CANNOT use both BT keyboard and mouse AND have Wifi ON, as it interferes with the BT radio, making the keyboard and mouse lag heavily. I have created a thread on this also.
What thread is that?

I have connected a USB thumb drive. The thumb drive works with or without power attached, but it will not charge. I suppose it is built to provide the power to the attached USB device and not to the phone / tablet.
Regards
Howard
I just got a cable from monoprice and it works great.

Has anyone found an OTG cable that can be used to power a thumb drive and apply power to the Nexus 7? I'm trying to find one for when I'm traveling. I'd like to be able to watch movies and keep the device charging.

Perhaps a small powered USB hub will reduce the power drain on the N7?
Have a look at this.
Some ****ty spam prevention policies don't allow me posting an outside link.
(Seems I haven't posted "enough" to be considered "trustable"
So figure out the url below.

My y-connector from my n4 doesn't charge while using USB otg. The ability to do so is not written in the software. I'll try to locate the source and report. OTOH, the USB otg connectors from my GNex and N4 all work on my N5 and both old and new N7's.
EDIT: I just ran across this. I'm sure it's for the original N7. I wasn't even aware of it so obviously have not tested it. I did use ziddey's kernel on the N4. Still searching.
2nd EDIT: Available for N7 FLO/DEB 4.4.2. I'm running franco but will revert to stock then try this (as soon as I make a nandroid of my device).
3rd EDIT: That kernel does work to charge while on usb otg. It is a setting you choose to activate during the set-up. I just chose stock everything until I got to the power choices. I will say that although the install was successful, I came as close as I've ever come to thinking my device was bricked. After the install, the screen went black and I couldn't do anything. After about a 30 sec power button mash, everything booted back up. This video shows installation on the N5. Some choices are different on the N7 FHD. As I said above, I was NOT returned to TWRP after installation.
There is a note about altering a sys file for OTG peripherals. I only attached a flash drive and the usb_charge_mode was set to Y (I assume for yes). You may have to perform the edit if using a peripheral device.
