USB OTG on the Glide ?

Just that, if anybody can try this out would, it would be awesome. You can follow the steps in this article:

I will make the test myself when I have the phone, but, I live in Argentina so, It'll take a while, I'll be making the payment trough PayPal probably next Monday, soo, that'll be 5 days for the package to be delivered to my courrier's office in Miami, next, another 3 business days for it to be delivered to my partner's house in Chile, and, with luck, another 2 or 3 days till my partner pick it up and bring it to Argentina for me XD

Thanks ! Sounds good to me, Device detected it's gonna be always no, if nothing it's plugged, so that's OK, and, if the Kernel claims support, I'm pretty sure it'll work, after all, this is "Kind" of a Galaxy SII device.

Are you saying that if this works we will be able to plug in a USB Key or an SDCARD via a dongle and upload files to and from our phone. Wow that would be crazy useful. Imagine plugging your friends android phone in USB mode and transferring some files to him.

This is exactly what made me open this thread XD

I have the OTG cable and it works great. I've tested it with a Flash Drive, Mouse, Keyboard, even showed a co-worker how I could charge his iPhone with my phone. Haha
I did the test for you and attached a screenshot of the results.

Wow! That is cool, how did the mouse work? Do you see a mouse in android? Did the keyboard work well? With the flash drive you get to see the files on it?

Yes, a mouse is displayed on the screen. It works great, right click acts like the back button, scroll click like the menu button, left click acts like your finger touching the screen (including drag, click and hold). The keyboard is similar with certain keys acting like the android buttons. Also, you can view and transfer files to and from your flash drive.
It works just like it does on the SGS2, tons of videos on YouTube. It's an awesome feature!

Wow I can't wait to try this.....Now, how would I use an MHL cable and a USB mouse and Keyboard.... Kind of would turn my phone into a PC if I could do that. Lets see a Micro USB to USB Hub. Plug into the hub the Peripherals then plug the MHL to a Micro USB to USB converter and away I go....Of course power the MHL. I don't think the MHL connector would like to go behind a USB hub though. In theory is this not what the docking station is doing in order to run the Ubuntu on android? OK not with this phone but on the one that they are demoing it on.

It's a lot simpler than that, just use this MHL cable:

Just plug it to your phone MicroUSB port, then plug a MiniHDMI Cable to the MiniHDMI port of the MHL cable, then plug that MiniHDMI cable to your Monitor/TV, on the other side, plug your phone's MicroUSB cable into the Female MicroUSB port of the MHL cable, and then plug that USB cable to a Hub, then just plug every other peripheral into the Hub, and of curse, if you're going to use an External Drive or something like that, remember to buy a 9V/12V AC Adapter for the USB Hub.

So your saying to plug the MHL adapter to the phone and to plug the Hub to the MHL device. I do not know if this will work as you need to Power the MHL adapter. Are you saying that powering the hub will power the hub and the MHL adapter? Have you tried this? I have the MHL adapter and I love the HDMI ability of my phone but I found I can not use to long a HDMI cable as it will not work since the HDMI cable is drawing power from the MHL adapter. 3 Feet works and 10 feet does not. I have not tested others in between yet. Oh and yes I do power the MHL adapter via another device (USB port to Power, or a Battery device to MicroUSB)

I have tried using the MHL and USB OTG cables at the same time and had no luck. Didn't attempt with any powered USB hubs.
What I have done is use the MHL adapter, and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard at the same time. Similar to video here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEb-DICYCgg.

Ok.
Received the cable.
It works.
ROM : Rogers (unklocked & rooted) + Cranium kernel.
USB key is mounted in usbstorage (/sda) and content of USB key is displayed (pdf, ...).
Mouse works as well.
Results posted on USB Host Diagnostics web site (using feature embeded in tool).

I bought a generic MHL cable online and couldn't get it to work; but got it working with two other phones. So apparently you do have to buy the special Captivate Glide cable. Can anyone verify this? I'd hate to pay extra for another cable that didn't work
What did you have to do to get your MHL Cable to work?
It does look like there are several different ones, so I'll try ordering another one...

He is talking about OTG Cable, not MHL Cable, no one has confirm that the MHL Cable works with the Glide, only way to know for sure, it's buying an Original Captivate Glide MHL Cable, that most likely it's the same one that for all the Galaxy S II variants out there

I bought my MHL cable at Monoprice.com for cheap and it works great with a 3Foot HDMI cable and powering the MHL connector.
THe only reason we are talking about the MHL and USB cable is because you need both working to really use the phone on a screen with a USB mouse and keyboard. I ordered a cheap USB host to Microsub cable on ebay when it comes from China I will let you know if it works with and without the MHL.

Did they work together?

Works for me sort of...
My micro usb port is loose & i have to hold the phone & cable tightly together to get it to connect. Because of this i can no longer charge my phone directly & have to charge spare batteries separately & swap when they run down.
I can also confirm the hdmi out works too & i have a bluetooth mouse that connects nicely at the same time for remote control.
Wished they would have used a usb mini instead of micro, as the micros tend to fail after moderate use.

MHL with USB OTG?

Has anyone found a MHL cable that also includes a USB OTG port? Samsung reportedly changed from a 5-pin configuration to an 11-pin configuration to allow MHL with USB Host mode simultaneously. Perhaps for a future Desktop Mode?
Has anyone been able to find one of these cables?

Just wanted to update, I believe I found the type of connector that I was looking for, but it is missing HDMI and it is sold out. This essentially could give you PC type connectivity on the S3.

I think we still have a bit of a wait. What you found is essentially a USB OTG hub with some card readers built in. I seriously doubt this will pass through the pins for HDMI to work out of the usb port. We'll see something when this phone finally launches everywhere. It's not even out in the US officially yet

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see the article in the link in the OP. Man.. I might have to get me a GS3 now. I'm quite satisfied with the reasoning for a pin change. =)
Samsung sells 11 pin MHL adapters and USB female to Micro USB male adapters on their accessories page, but I'm not sure if you could piggy back the USB input into the charging port of the MHL cable. I don't see any all in one cables on their site, and the desktop dock is just micro usb/audio. I tried.. =(

Now, I do have a Galaxy Nexus, but the USB OTG works great with keyboards/usb/mice/hubs; however, I cannot get it to simultaneously work with my MHL adapter. I understand the GS3 has a different pin layout though for MHL - my phone works with my MHL adapter correctly, but I didn't think it would have any change on the USB OTG. I'll most likely be breaking these apart and start tinkering. My goal is to show people how much of a full desktop-like experience I can provide from my phone, since so many people somehow think a GNex or GS3 are inferior to tablets, just because they're smaller... lol
Good luck finding information out on some kind of MHL/USB OTG setup. I'm just trying to provide any information I can from how my situation works with MHL/OTG, since I'm currently on the quest to achieve this myself.

I'm not really sure why people think they NEED MHL and USB OTG simultaneously to get a "desktop-like experience". You can already accomplish this with just a plain MHL cable and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse as was demonstrated in the Connectivity Demo video on youtube.
Edit: Actually I just remembered about portable hard drives. If you want to hook up a mouse, keyboard AND hard drive I wonder if you can plug all three into a powered USB hub connected to a bluetooth dongle. Hmm...

I believe this is already capable. Everything I say here is purely speculative, but what I see is that Samsung moved to a 11-pin connector for MHL and the standard 5-pin is no longer functioning. To call it MHL, they probably have to use the same standards for data encoding... but they simply "moved" the pins.
I put "moved" in quotes because of the way in which a standard 4 pin USB cable works (or 5 pin for our case)... you have a +5V, Ground, Data + and Data - (one data to phone, one data from phone, carrying ALL data). Since our phones still sync via 5-pin cables, this means the 5 pins are still "hot" for data like all other phones. I am presuming, that for the 11-pin connector, Samsung simply added a few more data+ and data- connectors (much like having two or three USB ports on a normal computer) but consolidated the ground/5V reference. I could be wrong, but it would make sense.
Lets call the stock 5 pin data connectors (2 wires) USB1. This is where MHL is conventionally sent through and all sycing can be completed through, 5 pin cable or 11 pin cable. If samsung added two additional USB ports to the single connector, lets say MHL is now over USB2 (wires inaccessible to 5 pin connectors). This frees up bandwidth and COM ports on USB1 and USB3 to use for accessories like a USB hard drive and keyboard/mouse. On a 5 pin connector, however, only USB1 is accessible. The Samsung 11pin to 5pin MHL adapter simply moves the data+/- from USB2 to USB1 (standard 5 pin location), so with the adapter you are syncing/exporting video over USB2 on the phone with a standard 5pin cable.
My thinking is such: If you plug in the OEM 11pin MHL adapter, it will also have access to the standard 5pin USB1 connection. Since USB2 is used for MHL, you can then plug any OTG device into the micro USB connector on the MHL adapter to make use of it. The only problem here is power (or lack thereof). By plugging in a USB hub with a discrete power source, plugging this into the MHL adapter, and plugging in the USB device of choice into the HUB, you *SHOULD* be able to get simultaneous data and HDMI. This assumes they put the standard 5 pins to the connector on the side of the MHL adapter and only wired the HDMI to the USB2 area.
Alternatively, you *SHOULD* be able to plug the micro USB cable from the MHL adapter into a computer, and simultaneously be able to sync files while outputting HDMI video. It sort of just comes down to being able to provide power to the MHL adapter on the +5V pin while using the data pins to access the phone. As soon as I have my MHL I'll figure it out, but that could be a bit. If anybody has access to a pinout from a Samsung 11 pin micro USB that would be helpful too.
Again, just dreaming here. I don't know anything about this, but if I was the engineer at Samsung I would choose this over analog outputs like Apple used for their giant connector.

for me at least i already have several keyboards and mice ... none are bluetooth.
I'm looking for the cheapest option available.

I'm just hoping someone releases a cable with 4 plugs:
Male MHL - To Phone Obviously
Female MicroUSB: To plug in charger
Female HDMI - To Display
Female USB - To USB Device
That's all I want... should cost less than $2 to make, just sell it for $20 and I'd be happy.

hi v8bait, are you able to get data thru the micro usb port at the side of the 11-pin mhl adapter? i was thinking of using the motorola lapdock with my s3 thru the mhl adaptor (other then a micro hdmi male connector, the lapdock also has a micro usb male connector that apparently send out power as well as push keyboard/trackpad data upstream) - if it works, we can have an inexpensive "clambook"

Just to recap,
Will this we possible:

In other words, the PC Experience with a keyboard and mouse.

I am also very interested in this exact thing. Using USB devices (multiple ones, e.g. plugging a powered USB hub into S III and then plugging them in) but also putting out S III video to HDMI.
However the other workaround is using AllShare Cast. In fact that is the route I'll likely go, because of the other unique advantages of AllShare Cast (i.e. using it for presentations to screens, etc.)
So: has anyone plugged a powered USB hub into S III and used multiple devices? Such as a keyboard and mouse?
I also want to use this S III more as a computer. the other perfect thing I wish I could buy would be a keyboard case, like the one available for iphone, so I can prop the S III up on a kickstand and use a real mini-QWERTY physical keyboard.

We're in the same boat; i want to use the s3 like a mini computer too. I think it'd be great for business travel, when i dont really need a laptop during the day but want something when i'm back in hotel room. I'd much rather use hotel TV instead of a laptop because that's what i am used to at home... pc hooked to TV.
I've been planning to use the allshare cast dongle too, but they dont seem to be available yet. I was thinking HDMI out with the allshare.. charging with the wireless charging kit and then keyboard and mouse with USB OTG. My logitech unifying receiver for keyboard/mouse works perfectly i just need the wireless charging and allshare dongle to be released.
For what it's worth I tried a powered USB hub and could not get it to work with the s3.

Wait so your saying you tried a (a) powered USB hub with a OTG cable connected to the phone or you tried a (b) powered USB hub connected with a OTG cable to the MHL adapter and then to the phone?
If it was (a) then there are some vids out there of ppl using powered USB hubs.

I'm puzzled that there aren't any more postings about this kind of stuff. I was expecting the GS3 to be easy to use as a "PC" replacement but it seems no one besides us few wanted to do that ? A simple cable should have done it but I'd even be willing to shell out 40-50$ for a decent dock that would do just that

You are not reading it right.
they want to use the MHL adapter, too.
As far as i can tell, the MHL adapter needs to be in the phone, not a hub. it is all dictated (the output being OTG, or MHL) by the impedance of what is plugged in. It is an either or situation.
Perhaps with a firmware update they MIGHT be able to run both signals and split it.. but i doubt it.

Motorola Atrix Lapdock and Galaxy S III

Has anyone connected their Galaxy S III up to a Motorola Atrix Lapdock?

If I remember well, the Motorola lapdock uses a HDMI plug to connect with the Atrix.
GS3 doesn't have one, you should get a MHL/HDMI convertor. Don't know if it'll work as a native HDMI plug will do.
If someone have both, it could be intereting to see if that work

So I'm going to dust this thread off a bit because this is the project I'm looking to work on -
I've ordered an Atrix Lapdock for my Bionic (very simple mod to dock the bionic) but as my personal phone is an S3, I'd like to use the lapdock with it primarily while still having the option to dock the bionic while on the go (I carry both phones). (While I'm at it, I'll probably look to get an hdmi micro extension cable and usb-micro-male to usb-A-male extension and try and use the lapdock as the base station for the Samsung Slate 7 PC i barely use since the interface is so poor)
Here's what I've gathered by reading various threads.
Lapdock:
The Lapdock will work with any HDMI source as seen in other threads (ie connecting to a PS3 via hdmi female micro to hdmi male standard adapter, $4 part from dealextreme). Others have posted how they can use the lapdock as a self powered hdmi external monitor with their laptop (very cool usage btw considering it's size)
Droid Bionic:
easily docks to the Atrix version of the lapdock by simply rotating the hdmi/micro usb connectors 180degrees in their sockets since they're piped in with short cables.
Galaxy SIII / S3 (mine is the T999):
here's where it gets tricky.
As I've gathered about the 11pin micro usb port (on the S3 and shared by the Note 2):
the original 5 pin MHL standard was ditched in favor of the 11pin MHL type connection. this in theory would allow the use of hdmi output with simultaneous usb otg and charging capabilities.
reviewing this thread here: (showthread.php?t=1953061&page=2) one can see that an OTG cable was modded with a simple resistor to allow for charging - member triff (the OP) was able to get this going and noted the log he got when the cable was plugged in reported 'hdmi fail' which leans to failing to initiate an hdmi connection... later in the thread member MRBR7 alludes to having an hdd running to view while charging on the OTG cable - his post is a bit vague as to whether he did the mod on an OTG cable or an HDMI cable.... i'll have to follow up.
finally, the posts in this thread (first 12 pages are a quick read showthread.php?t=1741583&page=12) provide resistor values and some close ups of the boards for the 11 to 5 pin adapter as well as what I thought was a list of pins for the 5 pin MHL.
I'm really trying to be purposefully clear in this thread as to my findings because it seems there are too many vague threads out there regarding the functionality; simply missing a letter or punctuation in a thread can turn a sure thing into a vague post...
another avenue is the official samsung galaxy note 2 "smart dock" which has 3 usb ports, in additon to an hdmi output and charging input - since this is sold out in the US (and due to PAL vs NTSC Standard I am hesitant to order from germany) it'll be a while before I can personally buy and test one (unless i can find one locally somehow). this seems like the best bet for a dock which can be hacked or adapted to interface the s3 with the lapdock.
my ideal final outcome of this thread would be to have a small cable or interface box which i can plug into the s3 to enable hdmi output + usb otg + charging. that trifecta would connect via a single micro-usb to the device (11 pin) and have an output of a female usb (A or micro, either can be adapted) and either a male or female standard hdmi (again, both of which can be adapted). this cable could enable the phone to be used as an impromptu desktop, carputer, lapdock brain etc...

The Atrix Lapdock is internally nothing but an 1366x768 HDMI LCD monitor with (rather poor) speakers and an USB-Hub on which a keyboard/touchpad and two free USB-ports are connected to. The monitor and the USB-hub have to be simply attached to any device which supports HDMI-output and USB-OTG via (slightly uncommon) HDMI- and USB-OTG-plugs.
There is no software running on the Lapdock (it is actually completely dumb) and there is no need for any specific SW on the connected device (might be nice to have something like webtop running but it is not necessary).
The S3 works flawlessly with the keyboard/touchpad/USB-hub using a USB-OTG-Adapter and with the HDMI-monitor via an MHL/HDMI adapter cable. The tricky part is only to get both simultaneously and possibly even charge the S3 from the Lapdock. For that purpose I use as long as there is no combined MHL-HDMI/USB-OTG-adapter/dock available (as described in the thread and page already indicated above: showthread.php?t=1741583&page=12 ) the allshare cast dongle and a cheap OTG adapter. Well, I got the Lapdock for less than 70 Euros and I think that is really great value since it is very well build and versatile... the allshare cast dongle is a bit overpriced (currently it is about 55Euros here) for an adapter-replacement but if you need it for different use cases (I mainly have it for a small LED-beamer) it might be worth it.
You can charge the S3 from one of the USB-ports of the Lapdock using a micro-USB cable (as long as the dongle or any other device is connected to the Lapdocks HDMI-plug - that is what signals the Lapdock to power up), but you can not simultaneously use the MHL/USB-OTG then. So it is nice for watching movies from your S3 on the Lapdock-screen (btw. the sound works fine as well) while re-charging the S3 but for "office" work with kb/touchpad you have to replug the OTG-cable. Actually I'm quite impressed with the relatively low power consumption of the allshare cast connection - so that is not a real problem IMHO. There might be people out there to solder the right resistors into OTG-adapter cables to allow both...
One disadvantage is obviously that you have this "bulky" (it is actually lightweight but still bigger than a simple adapter) dongle on the Lapdock. The big advantage over a dock is that you can more or less freely move around the S3 while using this combination.

google 'bens outlet' (a 1saleaday company) and you can pick one up for as little as $50usd! assuming it actually ships out, but worth it for a spare monitor project at the very least... - and yes, not a hard setup at all - the first use in my mind would be just to have a full size screen on the go, however to have a cable capable of mhl/hdmi + usb otg + charging would turn the dock into a powerhouse android laptop using 4g internet etc... (it'll give the chromebook a run for it's money)

all very cool - I'm thinking of ordering the allshare dongle just to try this out until the smartdock gets back in stock to hack it apart .. I'll probably order an 11pin mhl in the meantime too. I have a 5pin mhl, not sure what I can do with it without the adapter (i'll probably bundle it with my galaxy nexus and sell it all)
@a32: on a side note, i broke down and bought a Note 2 yesterday haha, so I'll probably be continuing this project with the Note2, (tmo just happened to have some in stock haha) I'm putting my week old S3 up for sale soon, but this project is still on my radar!

Sorry to snap, but if you've been on enough forums, you begin to notice that comments like yours are just add to confusion when unsubstantiated.
Any phone without a 'web top' mode or apk would obviously not work similar to the webtop mode that Motorola intended, however it'll still work, perfectly in fact, because this connection project is akin to hooking up your phone to a tv or monitor and using a usb mouse and keyboard to control it, albeit it's portable, like the padphone.
If you have any ideas as to how one could hookup both mhl/hdmi and usb/otg with charging I'm all ears (the real breakthrough would easily be seeing a US version T999 or similar running with the Smart Dock for the Note 2
Another thought to throw out there is whether this finished product could look similar to the padphone concept: a pocket for the phone to slip into, docking connector inside, basically self contained
As for those extension cables posted, places like monoprice and dealextreme have much better prices and selection, granted I'm just going those links on my phone - i don't understand how those are considered 'adapters' when all they do is extend the port

You don't.
... that's what we posted already. The webtop SW on some Motorola devices starts a specific desktop and window-manager on your phone when connecting to the lapdock. It may facilitate the use of the apps on the phone via the Lapdock (resolution/size/... of apps in windows etc.) but you do not need it to work with the S3 on the Lapdock.

A bit off-topic: It is an ACER C20 I own for nearly 2 years now. Like this one:

It is out of stock anyway, but I could "partly" recommend it:
It has the size of a phone, a built-in battery and - most important - lots of inputs (mini HDMI (HDCP), D-Sub (24-pin Universal), Composite Video/Audio (2.5mm 4-pin mini jack), micro USB (Typ AB), micro SD Card (SDHC)) + Audio out & speaker. It plays media from internal storage/SD card but that internal media-player is crap. It is however extremely mobile and together with movie players on modern phones like the S3+cast-dongle - or any tablet with HDMI-out or a device with Composite A/V out (e.g. old Nokias) - a nice device e.g. to entertain kids on travel or showing pictures while visiting the grandparents or alike. On the other hand, it is not really bright at all (actually you have to be in a very, very dark room to use larger screen areas) and the battery lasts often only 1/2 hour (but you can charge it with 5V from USBs or use it while on the mains adapter).
It works really nice with the S3 + allshare cast dongle (that's what I bought the dongle for in the first place), has a descent image quality (848x480 pixel) and accepts up to 1080i HD over HDMI as input signal for downscaling but for the dongle the input is of course limited 720p. It does NOT work with the S3 using the cheap (chinese) USB-MHL/HDMI-adapter with the long red cables (somewhere discussed here as well) since that one provides 1080p30Hz (at least to my TV - on which it works) and the projector obviously can't sync to that.
Back to the topic: that cheap HDMI-adapter for S3 works not very well with the Atrix Lapdock; you get an image but it is vertically squeezed. Again: the Lapdock and the S3 + cast dongle go together extremely well.

That led projector sounds pretty cool, I've waffle'd on buying one various times but can't say I've had a particular need other than for the fun of it hah

So I'm guessing you've tested this, but with the hdmi cable and the screen rotation turned on, the device still shows up in portrait? Unless I'm reading that wrong and you mean it's width wise video but looks like a 4:3 video on a 16:9 widescreen?
I wonder if that behavior is present with the official adapter...
So to return to the method of the allshare dongle, does it look like image 1 as i posted?
I recall you mentioned the dongle's hdmi signal is what triggers the docks micro usb port for kb/mouse control and charging, so for clarity i drew the wiring method up.
The next two wiring diagrams are what I'd expect to do as i finalize what the connection should/could look like...
I'm always in for feedback on streamlining the connections - the simple yet two part method will be just having the official smart dock, assuming it works with the s3, powered with one usb port, hdmi to hdmi mini and usb micro to the usb port, though maybe modify the output to delete charging power from the kb/m micro usb port...

Sorry, don't have much time and will have a look at your drawings later... The presence(!) of a device connected to the HDMI is detected by checking for a "Ground"-connection of one of the HDMI-pins (from googling I remember it to be HDMI-DDC/CEC) - that's what powers up the Lapdock (and activates the USB-Ports). No need for an already powered device on that HDMI port. The problem is however that there are many HDMI adapters/extension cables out there which do not pass that specific wire/connection and then the Lapdock will not react when using those. There is however no need to buy these overexpensive Motorola cable sets (those prices are unbelievable!)... my adapters & cables cost in total about 9 Euros.
+5V on the OTG-USB cable from the peripheral device (=Lapdock) to the host is not "liked" by most hosts (the S3 did not really react on it but it is probably not a good idea anyhow) so I cut the 5V red wire of the micro-USB(female)-to-micro-USB(male)-cable. On the latter you need something to signal the S3 the OTG mode (pin 4 grounded to 5). I do that quite stupidly using additional USB->OTG-adapters but you would have to take care of that in your MHL/OTC combi adapter with resistors etc. anyhow.
The "chinese" Adapter is vertically squeezed. The S3 goes into the correct HDMI-out mode including the (stock) homescreen to be usable in landscape mode - that is not a problem. Probably the 1080p30Hz mode is not well understood by the Lapdock and/or the adapter does not correctly "negotiate" the right resolution-/display ratio with the display or the quality of the sync signal from the adapter is really bad. That chinese adapter is not too bad for Full-HD TV sets but unusable for anything else. I did not try the official one. The Lapdock works however well with the dongle.

This info is much appreciated. I took the dive and ordered a lapdock from bensoutlet.com for $50 to play with. The regular one is $60 - but the keyboard that adds Hebrew letters was $10 cheaper. I figure the lettering doesn't hurt anything so I'd rather save the $10.
If anybody figures out how to simplify the connections, or perhaps someday enable MHL out + USB host with this thing - please post back.
Right now - I spent an additional $6 on dealextreme.com to get a microHDMI (female) to HDMI male adapter, and a micro usb female to male adapter so I can try to use the keyboard.
The result is going to be pretty cluttered, but I figure $50 is cheap for a portable, self powered HDMI monitor that could also power stuff from it's ports.

Your drawing No 1 is what I use (see below). No 2 is how it should be indeed (but where is the "modded cable" coming from?). While No 3 will not help you since only the presence of a shortened HDMI-CEC pin (+ opening the display a bit) will power ALL the USB-ports including U1+U2 (that activity mode of the Lapdock is indicated by a small white LED next to the touchpad) - so there is no "pre-power" available. But (again) anything that provides that ground contact on the HDMI-plug will do the trick... I actually have one 90degree HDMI-adapter (don't know how to call it in English), which does exactly that and shortens those pin(s) and simulates to the Lapdock the presence of a device (I assume that is NOT on purpose but it works with a second, identical adapter as well). Don't take me wrong you do not need that one if you conect a device (any) directly to the microHDMI-to-HDMI adapter but it is needed when you use HDMI extension cables (etc.) that do not pass all wires to the HDMI device.
I attached some pics how I wire that thing. Pic 1: the micro HDMI plug on the Lapdock is turned by me by 180deg just to make a bit more room for the microHDMI(fem)toHDMI(male)-adapter. You may directly attach the dongle to it (it is relatively stable and easy to carry around - pic 2). That's what one could call "entertainment mode" since you may want to watch videos etc. this way. But than you have not enough space for the microUSB-cable for kb/mouse. That is what I use the 90deg-adapter for. This adapter alone signals already the Lapdock to power up (no other HDMI-cable or adapter I own does this). Back to pic 1: The microUSB(fem)-to-microUSB(male)-cable has the red 5V wire cut. The microUSB-to-USB + USB-microUSB-OTG(!) adapter is there only to signal the OTG-host mode for the S3. The stuff on the right are things you may use on the free USB-port.
That strange device with the mobile speaker attached to its headphone jack has to be explained: it is a (5 Euro) "USB sound card". That is a bit odd... the Lapdock has stereo speakers which are working well (but not great) and the audio-output via HDMI(cast) to the Lapdock works perfectly (sound is ok and in sync when watching videos & you can control volume etc. from the S3 or the Lapdock keyboard) but the allshare cast SW on the S3 does not allow you to plug in a headphone or connect a bluetooth audio-device to the S3 for output of the video(!)-sound. You can use headphones for mp3-player music while using an HDMI display etc. but when you switch on a video you have to remove headphones otherwise the allshare connection stops. There might be two reasons 1: HDCP, 2: there is a small lag in video display from the wireless transfer protocol and the audio stream is equally lagged on purpose to be well in sync with the video stream. You may want to bypass that artificial restriction because the Lapdock has NO headphone jack ... and you can by using such a "soundcard" which is fully supported by the S3 but the sound is then indeed a bit "in advance" of the video stream.
Less exotic devices you can attach are external disks/pen drives or even game controllers (all of them work)... Pic 3 shows you how I wire it for "productivity mode"

Thank you. 50$ ! When they are as cheap go and get some (or better get many)! The Lapdock is really, really useful and works with many devices.
I originally bought it for the Raspberry Pi but I use it as well with an Archos A80G9 android tablet (not so often since the tablet is big enough anyhow) which has seperated (mini)HDMI and USB-OTG connectors (as it should have been done for all mobile devices including the S3) and used it for my "old" Nokia N8 (miniHDMI as well). In that case USB-OTG does not work since the N8 does not support USB hubs but you can chrge it and watch movies on the Lapdock display with it (in the train ...). The RasPi is powered via the same cable that is used for kb/mouse. In that cable I did obviously not cut the 5V wire. The power the Lapdock provides this way is sufficient to operate the RasPi (+ wifi dongle) ... about 1A is needed for that. So it should be possible to use that power via that OTG microUSB port for the S3 as well ...

What abot the EDD-S20E dock won´t that work with the lapdock ???
Problem is the dock is useless for my next device in 2 - 3 Years....
The allshare cast dongle might stay usefull even with the next gen of android phones....

I'm not sure why you'd want one without the usb cable for power though, cuz if you're outputting your display to your TV then it's going to drain a lot of power.
Unless you only want to show say a picture, or a short video it might be okay, but if you want to output say a whole movie, you're going to want to provide your phone with power at some point.
I've recommended an mhl cable in the past. It might suit you if you're looking for a nice, compact cable with hdmi and usb (for power).
But if you're dead against one with a power cable then feel free to give your linked one a try and report your findings.

Yeah, but i got the impression it would draw power from the TV by itself. I may be wrong about that...its not that I'm dead against a cable that needs power, more that I'm thinking about portability and something to add a bit more value should I ever sell the Note. And admittedly for the last one a genuine OEM adapter would be the best option, but they are gorram expensive.
Considering I have to buy an HDMI cable for my laptop, I might try a generic adapter, see how that works, and then try this cable if I have the spare cash in the future.

So I have an update for this; recently I bought one of the cables as above out of curiosity, and surprise surprise... It didn't work. When I connected the Note to the TV with it, it just flashed up 'USB connected' and then 'USB not connected' in the status bar. This is because of the obvious reason; that you need a conventional adapter with a USB-connection for external power. Also, the seller of this cable claimed that the TV in question needs to be MHL (not just HDMI) compatible for it to work. So essesntially you do in fact need a conventional Samsung (or generic copy) 5-pin HDMI adapter to get your Note's display on your TV.
I think that resolves the question. Oh, one more thing: you need a TW-based ROM for HDMI connection. Don't forget...

Are there currently any adapters that allow charging while also using a 3.5mm jack?
The Google store has this, but nobody can give me any information on what "Coming Soon" means.
Any ideas?

Moshi has them available for purchase now, but only on their web site and not through google.
Hopefully that means google will have them soon, I really want one to leave in my car but i dont know if i can justify the 45$ price tag.

I was researching for such a solution. In the XDA U11 forum, I saw this and ordered it, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0R1F1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You plug the provided 3.5mm adapter into it. It would be a bad portable solution, but might be good enough for a desk. I will report back on whether it works for the Pixel 2.

Yes please report back. As I understand those adapters need to have a DAC builtin, but if you are using oem dongle then perhaps it can communicate to phone through this adapter

I dont know if you looked at the product, but what he is doing is using the included USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that came with the phone, so that DAC would be there.

Spoke with manufacturer, they said it will work 100%
But I already gave away my P2, I decided to keep P1 for now until 8.1 release at least. I was excited about camera but I prefer P1 images they look better to my eyes

Looks promising, I would be using this in my car. It looks like it would be heavy but it also has an SD reader I don't know how listening to music via OTG is

It works completely! I tested a bunch of scenarios and am very happy. Only drawbacks so far are the thing is about half the size of the phone and the pigtail is about four inches.
Here is what works:
Rapid charging with a USB-C charger
Playing back music through the supplied USB-C audio adapter with and without charging attached
USB cable to an iPad (at least it connected and was recognized but I could not access pictures; I had the same issue with the data transfer adapter so I don't think this hub is at fault)
USB cable to a Canon camera
USB memory card reader
It would not read my micro SD card in the hub's slot initially but I got it to work.
Notes:
I did not test using the headset adapter with a wired microphone. I don't know if that is supported and don't have one.
You don't have to change the USB settings to get it to work. It just worked automatically.
The charging port is the one closest to the pigtail. The other port doesn't work for that purpose. The white lettering on silver case is hard to read so it is easy to miss which port is required for charging.
I didn't test it with HDMI because I cannot get the phone to work with the HDMI cable I purchased even when directly connected.

Hopefully we'll have a portables position under $45!
In the meantime I bought a Bluetooth receiver so in the car I can charge and use BT for audio to the car.
You could also buy a Bluetooth receiver and plug your earhones in it.

So the 4 inch pigtail goes into the phone, the PD charging port is connected to your Pixel wall charger, and the 3.5 USB c adapter connects to the data only USB C port?
Did you try to connect a keyboard, mouse, or USB Ethernet adapter to the USB A side? I am curious if those device work on the Pixel 2.

Correct; that is how I connected it. I tried an AnyKey security key that presents a USB keyboard interface and that worked as a keyboard. I don't have a mouse or ethernet adapter to try. I did also try a USB memory card adapter and that worked too.

FYI, this is response I got from Moshi rep, regarding the charge/play adapter.
While we do not know when exactly it will be available in Google's store, the same product is already available in our own web store - https://www.moshi.com/usb-c-digital-audio-adapter-with-charging
We are aware of that some users have been experiencing issues with this adapter, and we are already working together with Google on a solution for this. With that said, it appears that this only affects certain Pixel devices, as a clear majority of users (including our own product team and Google) haven't had any issues when testing multiple adapters on the Pixel devices in our office.
Although our team does not have a solution for the reported issues at this time, they are currently working with different software updates to see if this may resolve the issue. We are therefore not working on any hardware upgrades at the moment.

Same here. I would love to find anything that will let me listen to my music with my wired headphones and charge my pixel 2xl at the same time. Google created this situation for us when they removed the jack. You would think they would at least have one solution. So if you could send me a new link or post it here, that'd be great!
